Q&A with Seattle Seahawk Jermaine Kearse

CYS Services staff

Jermaine Kearse 15 to 1: Jermaine Kearse Foundation hosted more than 100 JBLM military youth and Gold Star youth for a weeklong camp at Auburn’s Junior Achievement last month. JA of Washington is part of the world’s largest organization dedicated to giving young people the knowledge and skills they need to own their economic success, plan for their future and make smart academic and economic choices. Last year, the 15 to 1: Jermaine Kearse Foundation bused JBLM school-age youth to JA World for an afternoon of learning. This year, the program expanded, providing a week of learning and fun for JBLM CYSS school-age youth and Gold Star youth. JBLM Child, Youth & School Services 5th grader Madison sat down with the star wide receiver for a question-and-answer period. Why is this camp important to you? This camp is important because kids learn about finances that can prepare them for their futures and Families. How has being part of the Seahawks changed your life? It’s given me a platform so I could do things like 15 to 1. How do you persevere through hard things? By not giving up and continuing to work hard. Don’t give up. What are the biggest hurdles you’ve faced to get where you are now as an athlete? I didn’t get drafted.

What are your plans after your career in professional football? I’m still figuring that out. Do you have any game-day rituals or superstitions? I always eat a chocolate hot fudge sundae. How long have you played football? I’ve played football since 7th grade; started playing professionally in 2012. Who did you look up to when you were younger? Kobe Bryant. Did you play any sports other than football? Basketball.

Join the movement in helping others in your community

It’s not too early to start thinking about a “Make a Difference Day” project. Make a Difference Day is the most encompassing national day of helping others. Held annually on the fourth Saturday in October, millions of Americans are rallied into a single day of action to help change the world. Share your community spirit at JBLM by getting your unit, organization and/or co-workers involved in the celebration Oct. 22. Everyone can participate! Find a need in your community and use the power of Make a Difference Day to mobilize your Family, neighbors or entire community into a day of action. For more information, call the JBLM Installation Volunteer Corps Program Manager at 253-967-2324.

resiliency tip of the month

Learning to solve a problem in a snap August can be popular for PCSing, taking trips and going on vacations. All of these involve planning and problemsolving. Making lists of things to do and setting schedules to be able to accomplish these tasks can be very helpful during stressful times. The staff at the Families OverComing Under Stress office can teach you problem-solving in a snap! It’s one of the great tools you can add to your toolbox while training with FOCUS! FOCUS is located at 2013B N. 3rd St. (at Pendleton Avenue) in Room 331. For more information, call 253-966-6390 or email JBLM@focusproject.org.
