Camp Lewis turns 100, plus more summer fun coming your way

We hope you enjoy the limited edition Centennial artwork cover by Lewis Army Museum historian Alan Archambault. The Centennial Celebration is Friday, Aug. 18, and the entire JBLM community is invited! Join us at Lewis Main for day-in-thelife activities, historical information, food and fun. Find event details and a map at JBLM100.com and find out how you can be a part of celebrating 100 years of JBLM! Other summer fun with MWR includes a Family golf special offered at both JBLM courses. It’s a great way to introduce your children to the game they can enjoy for their lifetimes. Turn to page 29 for details. Plus, find information on arts and crafts programs (and take advantage of the coupons on page 13), learn about becoming a member at the Club at McChord Field and stop by Warrior Zone and Sam Adams for entertainment — bingo, karaoke and open mic events — and a bite to eat. The School Support Services office has tips to help ease your Family into the backto-school routine. From slowly working toward a reasonable schoolnight bedtime to school supply shopping, turn to page 26 to read how to make the transition a smooth one. “Meet” your School Support Service staffers on page 28 and learn what they can do for school-age Families. Enjoy the last weeks of summer break and we hope to see you at our facilities. Share your feedback with us at http://ice.disa.mil. William E. Harvey Director, Family & MWR at JBLM

Prices and payment Costs vary according to the number of participants, trip duration, mileage, tickets and other fees (the larger the group, the less each person pays). Full payment is required seven days prior to trip departure. The NAC accepts cash, checks and credit cards. If you cancel a trip outside 48 hours before trip departure, we’ll refund the cost unless actual expenses have been made. A $10 processing fee is applied

Move over summer! A new school year is starting Back to school with School Support Services JBLM School Support Services

Parents

In the blink of an eye the beginning of a new school year is upon us. For some students, it can be an exciting time as they reconnect with their friends after summer vacation. For others, it’s another new year in a new school and meeting new friends. The School Support Services office has a few tips to share to help parents and children transition back to school and promote a year full of successful school experiences.

• Gather all necessary documents. If you

Elementary school • Move bedtime back a half-hour each week a month before school starts until you reach the desired bedtime for your child. • Talk to your child about expectations for the school year. • Organize your child’s school supplies and backpack one week before school starts. • Help your child pick out clothes for school. • Keep talk about school positive and point out the good things about going to school.

Middle & high school • Go shopping together to get school supplies. • Talk to your child about after-school activities he/she would like to participate in and make necessary arrangements. • Address any concerns your child may have about going back to school. • Focus on the parts of school that your child enjoys. Remind your child of different extra-curricular activities to be involved in during the school year. • Ensure your child has a designed space for homework.

are enrolling in the district for the first time, be sure to have your child’s shot record, last report card from previous school, verification of housing address and, for kindergarten students only, their birth certificate. • Have at least two emergency contacts that you can provide the school. You will want to ensure that your emergency contact will be willing accept the responsibility before you list them. As a tip, if they have school-age children, you can offer to be their emergency contact as well. Remember to keep your contacts updated throughout the year. • Attend the schools open house, tour the school and meet your child’s teacher. This may help ease any fears and tears on the first day of school. • Inform your child’s teacher on any Family situations that may affect their learning. It could be an upcoming PCS, deployment or change in household such as divorce or separation. Ask the teacher to alert you if they notice any changes in your child’s behavior in the classroom. • Stay positive and smile! When schools, parents and students work together, school can be an opportunity for tremendous development. Students who feel comfortable in their new environment are able to learn and grow effectively. If you’re new to JBLM and enrolling your child into school or have questions on regarding your child’s education, reach out to the School Support Services office. Call 253-967-7195 or email at usarmy.jblm. imcom.list.dfmwr-cys-schools-liaison@mail.mil. “Meet” the School Support Services office on the next page. JBLMmwr.com

Child Supervision Guidelines

Is your child old enough to stay home alone? All parents eventually face the decision to leave their child home alone for the first time. Whether they’re just running to the store for a few minutes or working during after-school hours, parents need to be sure their children have the skills and maturity to handle the situation safely. Being trusted to stay home alone can be a positive experience for a child who is mature and well-prepared. It can boost the child’s confidence and promote independence and responsibility. However, children face real risks when left unsupervised. Those risks, as well as a child’s comfort level and ability to deal with challenges, must be considered. Parents can visit childwelfare.gov/pubPDFs/homealone.pdf for a simple factsheet that provides tips to help parents and caregivers when making this important

decision. For Families residing on base at JBLM, leaving a young child unsupervised may be considered neglect, especially if doing so places the child in danger. Use the Guidelines for Leaving Kids Home Alone at fb.com/JBLMafcs for guidance. If you’re concerned about a child who appears to be neglected or inadequately supervised, contact the local child protective services agency at 1-866-ENDHARM or JBLM Police at 253-967-3107. EAP Tip of the Month Physical and emotional safety during the summer season As we enjoy the bright and warmer summer days, we’re reminded that physical and emotional health is paramount. The 101 Critical Days of Summer began Memorial Day weekend and ends after Labor Day. So, it’s time for us to brush up on summer safety tips for ourselves, Family, kids and pets! Physical Safety: Be mindful to remain well-hydrated, regularly access cooling centers. Take precautions against sunburn and heatstroke, and practice safe barbecuing, swimming safety and safe boat operation. And, of course, for those who choose to work out, please take regular breaks. Emotional Safety: As the seasons change, change is also an inevitable part of life. There will be fun activities, vacations, PCS moves and pleasant events. For those unexpected changes that are wonderful, we celebrate. For those unplanned, unpleasant events that may occur, we support one another. Keep in mind that your Employee Assistance Program team is an available resource for processing thoughts, problem-solving and providing support resources. Feel free to stop by to see the EAP Team at Lewis Main, 2008B N. 3rd St. (at Pendleton Avenue), Room 114 or at call 253-732-2214.
