What MWR means to me Our resolve at MWR is to improve your morale, look out for your welfare and give you ways to recreate. Each month, we’re looking at what this means to people who participate in MWR activities and events.

SIRI McHUGO is a customer service representative at Leisure Travel Services.

2

To me, MWR means support, compassion, empathy and affordability. As an active duty Air Force spouse of over 19 years, MWR has helped our family tremendously. Both of my children have been blessed with many affordable, and often free, youth programs. We’ve also attended many special events here at JBLM. During my husband’s numerous deployments, we received such great services, including free child care hours through Child & Youth Services. That alone helps relieve some of the stressors that come with deployments. I’ve been employed with JBLM MWR since October 2015. I started in the fitness centers and eventually landed a permanent position with Leisure Travel Services. I’ve learned so much and am enjoying my experience as an MWR employee. I love assisting our customers and seeing them leave our office happy and excited for their vacations. MWR programs have played such an important role in the military community and their Families. Not only am I proud to be an MWR employee but also the recipient of their services as well. To the military Families out there who might not know about the services and programs that MWR has to offer, please take advantage of these great opportunities while you have the chance!

Rock climbing, your style 24

Joint Base Lewis-McChord Focus August 2019

By Brittany Catanzaro f you’ve been climbing at indoor rock climbing gyms and want to take it to the next level, transition to climbing outdoors with an experienced guide through the Outdoor Recreation program! Climbing trips are a great option for beginners, with opportunities to learn the basics of the sport. I joined one of the trips and, even though I lacked experience with climbing, I still had a blast while the instructor guided me and encouraged me to climb. I had so much fun climbing outside with an awesome group of people I’d just met. The day before our rock-climbing trip, we met as a group at Adventures Unlimited to understand the fundamentals of sport climbing with an emphasis on how to properly belay. We also met our wonderful instructor, Berndt Bittlingmaier, who has been climbing for 20 years and has the knowledge and experience to instruct people to climb. I also met the others going on the trip; we all had good laughs and were excited to go climbing the next day.

I

During the meeting, we each received quality climbing gear to use on our trip — harness, helmet, two pairs of climbing shoes, carabiners, gloves, ropes and assisted breaking devices — all essential equipment for sport climbing outdoors. The next morning, we met at Adventures Unlimited and rode in ODR’s van (transportation for these trips is included in the cost). We headed to Mount Erie, located south of Anacortes. Mount Erie is a spectacular sport-climbing location with gorgeous views of the Puget Sound and the Olympic mountains, one of the most stunning views from rock-climbing walls in Washington. It features three main climbing walls: Powerline Wall, The Snag Buttress and Summit Wall. We had perfect, warm weather with beautiful partly cloudy skies, a cool breeze and clear views of the lakes and islands. We started the trip at the summit of Mount Erie on top of Summit Wall. While looking down at the stunning views, we all stared in awe at vast views of the surrounding lakes, islands and Puget Sound. After Berndt set up the anchors and tossed the ropes down Summit Wall, we hiked and scrambled down a rocky path to get to the base of the wall. It was a short scramble but so fun using all your limbs to climb down as we followed each other like ducks in a line. Once we arrived at the base of Summit Wall, we were all eager to start climbing. Each of us scanned the giant wall, determining which route would be the best to climb. While taking turns, we set up belays and performed safety checks, and some of the group began climbing. The rest

of us cheered them on. We were all having a great time, enjoying the camaraderie. While climbing the routes, I found you can choose your adventure by determining how high you feel comfortable climbing to, and the type of route and speed, from easy to difficult. After we were satisfied with climbing Summit Wall, Berndt showed us the way to Powerline Wall. On the way to Powerline Wall, we had some more fun scrambling the rocky path. We were having a truly fun time as we climbed up and down rocky paths to make our way there. Soon, we were at the top of Powerline Wall where Berndt set up the anchors for us to start climbing. We all headed down to the base of the wall and each took turns climbing up a few different routes that Berndt had set up for us. We also had a great time laughing and talking with each other. We spent a few hours at Powerline until we were all satisfied with our climbs and decided it was time to end the trip and head home. Important takeaways from the trip: 1. Learn the techniques to climb without a guide and feel confident with the techniques. 2. While climbing, develop trust with yourself, partners and gear, which are important in order to build confidence while climbing. This was definitely a successful trip and I would love to do it again! By Antoinette Walker, JBLM School Liaison Officer hether you’re ready to send the kids back to school or tearing up just thinking about the day your kindergartner begins their academic career, your job is to help guide your kids to success and prep them so they’re excited for the start of school. Advance preparation will help your children have happier beginnings and positive anticipation to the school year. Here are ways to be prepared and increase the excitement and anticipation for the start of the upcoming school year: • Purchase supplies. Your school should provide you with a list of supplies each student will need to have or contribute to the classroom at the beginning of the year. Incorporate your children in this shopping trip, and let them make the choices for their school supplies. • Find a new backpack and lunch box. Picking out a new backpack and lunch box for the school year is exciting and something kids look forward to each year. Giving them a choice in picking out new items is fun but also gives them something to look forward to using on the first day of school and during the year. • Get bedtimes and wake-up times back on track. Two weeks before school starts, begin setting bedtimes incrementally earlier. Start by putting your kids to bed 15 minutes early for several nights, increase it to 30 minutes and so on, until your kids are back to typical school night bedtimes several

days before the start of school. In the mornings, begin setting the alarms in order to get your kids back in the habit of waking up with enough time to get dressed, eat breakfast and get out the door in time for school. • Create a dedicated homework station. Set up a homework station in your house where your kids can drop their backpacks, grab a snack and do homework once they get home. Having a dedicated space where you can help and assist is best. Try to limit distractions such as placing a homework station near toys or windows that overlook the neighborhood where kids may be playing and can easily distract from finishing homework in a reasonable amount of time. • Make a lunch plan. Meal plan for school

lunches by asking your children’s food preferences. If your child plans to have a hot lunch a few days a week and take their lunch box on the other days, consider looking over the menu for the month and letting them pick out the days they’ll eat hot lunch. • Dream up a last-ditch bucket list. The end of summer and start of school can easily sneak up on you before you get all your bucket list items checked off. Make a “last week of fun” list to cross off a handful of lastminute trips, adventures, outings, special treats and time with friends. (See inspirational ideas on right page.) When your kids feel like they’re wrapping up summer and they’ve finished it on a high note, they’ll feel ready to start school.

Madigan’s Best

Over the last 15 years, residents graduating from Madigan Army Medical Center’s general surgery residency program have passed the exam for board certification on their first attempt at a nation-topping rate of 97.6 percent. “If you get an 89 percentile in the nation, you’re in the bottom quarter of Madigan in our annual in-training exam. That’s unheard of in any program. In any other program, you get an 89 percentile in the nation, you are doing very well,” Lt. Col. (Dr.) Vance Sohn, the residency program director and chief of general surgery.
