Why not your car loan? If you think buying a locally raised rump roast makes a difference, imagine how a bigger purchase, like a local car loan, supports the community. Right now, Harborstone Credit Union has barn loads of money to lend to people who not only want to drive a new car but drive the local economy too. Who could possibly have a beef with that?

this winter or want to learn winter survival skills to be prepared and safe on your ski trip or drive across the pass, check out the New Year’s Eve winter camping trip — you’ll have fun and receive a crash course in Winter Survival 101.
The Northwest Adventure Center is offering this trip as a fun way to ring in the New Year. You’ll head up to Mount Rainier Saturday, Dec. 31 and camp in a winter wonderland. See page 22 for the cost and age requirements. On the camping trip, you’ll get

smartly with ODR hands-on experience and valuable knowledge from outdoor recreation experts. Campers will learn winter safety tips and navigation skills, and put them into action right away. You’ll also learn about avalanche conditions, how to safely choose your destination and the importance of always letting someone know where you’re going. The staffers at the NAC will provide information on reliable sources for weather and avalanche conditions. While gear and food are provided for the trip, you’ll learn what you need to survive in the cold winter weather and the proper techniques for packing gear, equipment and food. You’ll need lots of food to keep your energy up in the cold. Snow activities can be strenuous, so make sure you stay hydrated as well. Additional educational topics on the trip include Winter Camping 101, Hypothermia 101, Winter Water 101, Snow Shelters 101 and Leave No Trace Camping 101.

Dress for success When it comes to outdoor adventures in the snow, cotton is not your best bet. Whether you’re playing in the snow with your kids, heading to the slopes with your buddies or going on an overnight winter camping trip, dress smart in layers with an outer layer of waterproof clothing. Follow these few quick tips to get winter-weather smart. Start with a pair of wool socks and slip on a pair of waterproof boots. Dress in layers — wear wool, polypro, thermax or other mid-weight long underwear (again, no cotton). Add a pair of wool or fleece pants that are roomy enough for layering, topped off with a pair of wind or waterproof pants. For your upper body, select two comfortable layers such as a light wool shirt and wool sweater or long underwear top and pile sweater. These layers serve as insulation and should be covered with a winter shell. Make sure to cover extremities — wear mittens or gloves with liners — and your head with a wool hat, scarf or neck gaiter. Always bring extra clothing. For camping trips, bring a sleeping bag, sleeping pad and a silk or fleece liner. The Northwest Adventure Center will provide a complete packing list and instruction for packing before the Winter Survival 101 trip. Stay tuned to the FOCUS or visit JBLMmwr.com for upcoming sessions of Winter Survival 101.

Reach financial security — no penny pinching required!
By Ryki Carlson, JBLM Financial Counselor

ASK THE MONEY EXPERTS
s 2011 comes to an end, it’s time to evaluate our goals. One goal at the top of the list is financial security. It’s important to understand that gaining financial security centers around a simple time-tested formula: spend less than you make! Taking steps to achieve financial success will provide you control and security. Invest time in training; the more you understand about finances the better decisions you will make. Consider visiting some educational sites such as saveandinvest.org, mymoney.gov, bankrate. com or ultimatemoneyskills.com. If you prefer to attend classes or one-on-one budget counseling, give Army Community Service a call at 253-967-7166 to schedule an appointment. A financial counselor can ensure your goals and your budget are aligned for you to reach financial success. Spending less than you make begins with creating goals and a valid budget — one that truly shows your income and expenses. Carefully review

Analyze your spending habits and get tips on creating and sticking to a budget with the Financial Readiness Office. Financial counseling is available at special weekend sessions Saturdays, Dec. 3 and Jan. 7, 10 a.m.–2 p.m. and by appointment. A schedule of money-wise classes is at JBLMmwr.com.
your bank statements and bills to see the real picture. Technology can help you through this stage. Most banking institutions offer tools to track and categorize your spending. Remember that taking the first step is always the hardest and offers the greatest rewards.
Q: How can I avoid bank fees?
A:
Learn the specifics of your checking account. There are three major fees: account maintenance, ATM and overdraft. If you have an account with maintenance fees, ask your financial institution if you qualify for free checking. This may be as simple as setting up direct deposit or maintaining a specific balance. If your financial institution doesn’t offer free checking, consider moving to a credit union or a community bank. To reduce ATM fees, try to stay within your financial institution’s network or visit moneypass.com to find ATMs without a surcharge. Reducing overdraft fees, also known as nonsufficient fund charges, can be avoided by turning off, or opting out of, overdraft protection. This will help you avoid fees, but require you to live within your means.
The next step requires evaluating how you spend. Taking a close look at your spending offers the opportunity to reduce expenses. For example, your food budget can be reduced by limiting the number of trips to the grocery store, shopping with a list or using coupons. Consider why you shop or spend money. Is it for emotional reasons or is it out of necessity? Understanding the reasons behind your spending will help you adjust your spending. Now commit to making changes that will help you succeed financially. Tracking your progress will help monitor your success. Ensure you celebrate the small successes along the way to reinforce your efforts. Investing time and effort in your finances will go a long way in providing peace of mind and security.
