As of Feb. 1, we welcome you to JBLM. You’ll be seeing these four letters around a lot. It stands for Joint Base Lewis-McChord. Joint basing is a decision that comes down from the Department of Defense and is seen as an opportunity for our installations to become more efficient, and in doing so, improve services to you, the MWR customer. As with all change, it will take some time to get used to. For instance, Fort Lewis main post will now be known as JBLM Main, North Fort will be known as JBLM North and McChord will be JBLM McChord Field. There will be changes to signage and Web sites to ref lect JBLM. We look forward to coming together as a team to better serve you, the Army-Air Force family. MWR appreciates your patronage. Sincerely,

William E. Harvey

February 2010 2010

Improve physical fitness: reduce your stress level and improve your morale Fort Lewis Sports, Fitness and Aquatics Branch is here to help you – family members, civilian employees and military members – get in shape. Jensen Family Health and Fitness Center boasts a full calendar of instructional classes, and McVeigh Sports and Fitness Center has some of the best weightlifting equipment in the area. That’s just the beginning – there are four other sports and fitness centers and three swimming pools on post where you can work at meeting your fitness goals. Civilians get time off to get fit Just like the Army’s focus on maintaining physical fitness among its Soldiers, the Fort Lewis Civilian Fitness Program will help improve fitness, morale, minimize health risks and help relieve stress. This is a one-time opportunity in a civilian employee’s career to initiate a physical fitness program. Three hours a week of administrative leave will be approved through your

supervisor to start this program. The program is six months in duration. This is an ongoing program and you can start the program any time during the year (January through November). To enroll in the program, you need to complete the Civilian Fitness Program Packet posted on the Fort Lewis Web site https://ft.lewis.army.mil/. Please read and complete all the documents in the packet. Pre- and post-fitness assessments are required to be in the program, along with some health education classes. Fitness assessments are conducted at Jensen Family Health and Fitness Center, Building 2022 on Liggett Ave. You may schedule your appointment by calling 253-967-5122.

Pack up the car & take to the road With another long weekend ahead, it’s a great time to plan a getaway. A little time planning your trip can save you money. Here are some tips: Budget your trip Ensure you calculate the cost of gas, tolls and ferry costs (both ways) as well as any overnight lodging costs. Packing a cooler for drinks and snacks along the way can save money. To help you calculate the cost of gas, visit costtodrive.com. Maps Get an updated map or road atlas, and check out Washington’s Department of Transportation site at wsdot.wa.gov for information on statewide travel information. Check with your insurance agent regarding roadside assistance on your policy. Crossing the border If you are crossing into Canada or Mexico you will need proper documentation. For details, check out http://travel.state.gov. Ensure your ride is ready for travel Check fluid levels, tire pressure, belts

and your emergency kit (minimally, your kit should include jumper cables, flashlight, reflective triangle or flares, wet wipes or paper towels and a first-aid kit). Take extra bottled water and food in case you get detained longer than expected. Keep your tank full as you go along; once it reaches one-quarter full, get gas as soon as possible. Keys Keep an extra key for your car in your pocket to help in the event you lock your keys in the car. There may be no one to help you if you are out of cell range. Cell phone Your cell phone battery should be fully charged and your hands-free unit hooked up before you pull away. Ensure you take your car charger if you have one. Remember that 911 only works in the states. Also, know if your plan will charge you roaming fees for the area you are visiting. Spec. Phil Bourillion rescued a 6-week-old puppy near his base in Afghanistan. With the help of a Facebook page – “Bring Oso Home” – he’s raising funds in the hopes she can make the trip to the U.S.

Feedback

Lewis-McChord MWR’s

The Army’s motto is “Leave no man behind.” But what about man’s best friend? Everybody loves an underdog. That’s why Lewis-McChord MWR is rooting for Oso the pup to make it home to Washington. Currently, Oso is on a base in Northern Afghanistan awaiting a trip home to the U.S. Her dad is Spec. Phil Bourrillion, a member of the 5-2 Stryker Brigade on a year-long deployment to Afghanistan. He rescued the orphaned 6-week-old puppy from a trash burn pit near his forward operating base in the Afghan mountains. He took her in, shared his meals with her, built her a dog house and made her part of his pack. “She makes my days go by faster because I know I have to get up and start my day by caring for her, in addition to doing my job on base. Thinking of her makes the time go by and reminds me of my dogs at home.” “Having Oso around the FOB is like having a piece of home for us,” explains Bourrillion. “She is playful and loving to all the Soldiers and gives us something positive to think about.” Even coming up with the name Oso was a team effort. “Oso means bear in Spanish and she looked like a bear cub to us, so we all agreed that named suited her well and had a nice ring to it.”

Upon Bourrillion’s redeployment, he would like nothing more than to have Oso make the journey home with him, where she belongs. Before that can happen she must have her vaccinations and procure safe travel to the U.S. The Bourrillion’s are working with organizations that rescue dogs of war. If you would like to learn more about their efforts, visit her Facebook Group page named: Bring Oso Home from Afghanistan or http:// bringosohome.chipin.com/ to find out how you can help. – Kate Mullinax, Lewis-McChord MWR Facebook moderator Become a Lewis-McChord MWR friend today Become our Facebook friend and you’ll receive up-to-date notices on discounts, giveaways and upcoming events.
