Family during snow fun Robert Wade Conrad, Kaweka Stoney, John Dorman and Brad Hinton gave valuable information that everyone can benefit from this winter.

Q: How should parents dress their children for extended outdoor snow play? A: The main thing to remember is to dress in layers. As kids warm up (and they warm up quickly), you can take off a layer without risk of getting too cold. Every layer of clothing should be made of a synthetic material (such as polyester), wool or silk.

Q: Why not wear cotton? A: Sweat is your worst enemy when playing outdoors. Cotton holds in moisture that can only evaporate when exposed to air. That’s why cotton cools you in the summer. On the other hand, synthetic fabrics wick moisture away from the skin and keep skin more insulated from the cold.

Q: So, how should you wear these layers? A: First, dress in long johns and a long T-shirt made of anything but cotton — that’s important. Then, wear synthetic-material fleece pants and tops — that’s the insulating mid-layer. The top layer should be a wind-and-water-resistant shell, like what you’d wear for rain.

Q: What about heads, hands and feet? A: Layer two pairs of synthetic socks. Many parents buy rubber boots that their kids wear for rain, but if they wear them for snow, make sure their feet stay dry since the boots don’t allow moisture to escape. When the kids are done playing outside, take off the rubber boots to allow their feet to dry. If you can afford it, it’s better to buy snow-insulated water-resistant hiking boots. Wool mittens or gloves are fine for hands and wool caps for heads. Gators or tubes are great for wearing around the neck and head, and you can even pull them up over your lower face if the wind gets cold. If it’s sunny and you’re outside in the snow, your child can get super sunburned. Be certain to use sunscreen under their nose, on their cheeks, on and behind their ears and above their eyelids since the reflection from the snow is where the sunburn mostly happens.

Q: How long can kids safely stay outside in snow? A: It depends on your child. Parents really do need to look out for and check on their children for signs of hypothermia. A child who’s really having fun building a snowman or sledding won’t tell you they need to come inside, even if they feel cold. Check to see if they’re shivering, their hands, feet and abdomen are cold, their lips are blue or if they’re lethargic or confused.

Q: What about driving in the snow and what to bring in your car? A: If you’re going to a national, state or snow park, you’re required to bring chains in your vehicle through March 31, even if it’s four-wheel drive. If you don’t, then you won’t be allowed into the park. Learn how to put on your chains before you head out,

and don’t wait until you’re stuck to put on your chains! Also, always go with a full tank of gas. Conditions in the mountains change quickly — you might be stuck in a traffic accident, while the road needs clearing or when an avalanche has suddenly closed a major road. Bring cash. If you need to gas up, some gas stations in small towns may not be set up to accept credit or debit cards. If you get stuck and need a tow truck, some independent local operators might only accept cash. Always bring the 10 winter essentials with you, including a shovel and flashlight, a down or mylar blanket and highenergy food and water. You can keep the 10 essentials in a backpack and bring them with you wherever you go in the snow. The Washington Trails Association has a list of 10 essentials in its Winter Safety Tips at wta.org/hiking-info/basics/ winter-safety-tips.

Q: How else should you prepare your vehicle for winter driving?

A: Have it winterized at one of our MWR Auto Centers. The staff can teach you how to change your fluids and oil for winter conditions when you make an appointment at the McChord Field Auto Center. For more information on winterizing your vehicle, call the Lewis Main shop at 253-967-3728 or the McChord Field shop at 253-982-7226.

Q:

Anything else we should know before heading out for fun in the snow?

A: You’ll need an access pass or snow park pass for many public-access snow destinations. Check about getting a free active duty or disabled all-access pass at store.usgs.gov/pass/military.html and www. nps.gov/findapark/passes.htm. If you need snow gear, boots or jackets, you can rent clothing from Adventures Unlimited (253-982-2206) and gear from the NAC (253-967-8282). JBLMmwr.com

hose who have watched “Field of Dreams,” and even those who haven’t, know that “If you build it, they will come.” At Joint Base Lewis-McChord, the number of fields had decreased for the better half of the past decade as more base housing, hangars and other buildings were constructed in support of installation growth. This led to a decreased number of opportunities for recreation. A change in that trend came Oct. 30 with the grand opening of the Lewis North Athletic Complex, a $14-million project that is expected to bring more opportunities for intramural leagues, tournaments and other events for JBLM Service members, their Families and other

members of the installation community. Within the 25-acre space between 32nd Division Drive and H Street — just a few blocks away from the Warrior Zone and Wilson Sports and Fitness Center — there are now four synthetic turf softball fields, two outdoor basketball courts and two multipurpose fields that can be used for

The Army Corps of Engineers began construction in August

flag football, soccer and rugby. Excitement was in the air among JBLM command, members of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation staff and about 20 softball and football teams ready to play in inaugural tournaments shortly after the ceremonial ribbon cutting. “It’s like when we opened the Warrior Zone (in 2012) and there was that wow factor,” said Richard Randall, chief of the Family and MWR Community Recreation Division. “That reaction is what we wanted. We

2014 to build the fields that also feature a concession area as the central point for the softball fields and rest areas. The new outdoor sports complex makes it possible to grow the interest in recreational and intramural sports — a big part of the JBLM culture. “To make us competitive with the local complexes is great,” said Ron Hussung, the sergeant major for JBLM Family and MWR [at the time of the complex opening]. “You hear about the (Regional Athletic Center) and we lacked the same capabilities. After tonight, we are going to be the standard bearers.”

& fitness programs factor’ JBLM now has the capability to play despite the rain that is common in this part of the Pacific Northwest. With synthetic turf replacing the dirt infields in softball, the likelihood of games being rained out will decrease greatly. This allows JBLM recreation staff to schedule softball leagues in winter months and also possibly offer more leagues throughout the year. The addition of the new sports complex will make 2016 a big year for intramural sports. Aaron Jones, director of JBLM’s Sports, Fitness and Aquatics, announced there will be multiple leagues in addition to the current intramural offerings — including open leagues that would allow retirees and even civilians to play on the installation. “Civilians and retirees make this community,” Jones said. “It is our job to provide opportunities for them to recreate.” Reprinted with permission.

spouse transition course

Get the tools & knowledge you need for life after JBLM Each new year brings the opportunity for life changes, and for many Service members that means preparing to transition out of the military. Whether you’re retiring or your service is being cut short, it can be a stressful and difficult time. This transition may also be difficult for spouses, often the rock of military Families. To help you through this transition, take advantage of the AFCS Spouse Transition Course designed to ease you into the civilian phase of life. This year we’ve reduced the length of the course and changed the format to ensure the most relevant and effective use of your time. The goal is to set you up with all the tools and knowledge you’ll need to manage your benefits, finances and employment in your new civilian lifestyle. The course is three days long and includes an in-depth look at VA benefits, complete financial planning, strategic goal-setting techniques, a Tricare overview, a general and federal résumé course and a great class on how to search for and find the right employment. Although this course is designed for the transitioning spouse, everyone is welcome to attend and gain all this empowering information. Our next course is Jan. 25–27, 9 a.m.–2 p.m. at McChord Field’s AFCS Employment Readiness building, 551 Barnes Blvd. Child care is provided, and there is a one-hour lunch. To register, visit JBLMafcs.checkappointments.com (under Classes & Activities, Employment) or call 253-982-WORK for more information. Continued on page 27. JBLMmwr.com

Quick tips to manage Seasonal Affective Disorder

n the great Pacific Northwest, it’s common to experience perpetual gray skies for a majority of the year. As the temperatures drop and the nights become longer, some may experience a case of the winter blues or even Seasonal Affective Disorder, a depression brought on by winter. For Families with young children, these factors may force kids indoors. Finding ways to battle the winter blues while trying to keep the children entertained can sometimes prove to be a daunting and stressful task. Here are some suggestions for keeping our loved ones active, healthy and happy during the gloomy days: • Remember routines. With the winter weather zapping everyone’s energy, it’s easy to succumb to laziness, messiness or even chaos; but routines continue to provide your Family with stability and predictability. By sticking to daily routines, you continue to maintain the expectation that household chores will continue to be done on a daily basis so there will be no need to quarrel over it later. • Limit screen time. While snow days may tempt us into watching our favorite shows all day, you still want to encourage other activities that will keep your loved ones mentally and physically fit. Encourage other areas of play, such as puppet shows, going on scavenger hunts, building forts, creating art projects, playing games (board games, hide-and-go-seek) or even bundling up and going for a walk in nature. • Encourage enthusiasm. You can keep the winter blues at

26

Joint Base Lewis-McChord Focus • January 2016

bay by making your home environment happy and fun. Bitter weather and earlier nights take away many of our children’s favorite outdoor activities, which can result in a lot of frustration for little ones. No matter how unpleasant it gets outside, you can help keep your Family healthy and happy by encouraging indoor activities and finding ways to keep everyone (including yourself) happy and upbeat. Unsure if you or a Family member is experiencing the blues or SAD? As winter begins, look for shifts in behaviors and moods that seem to be consistent with the changing seasons. Changes in mood, activity level or eating and sleeping habits can all indicate the onset of SAD. If you aren’t sure if you or your child is struggling with the winter blues or SAD, schedule an appointment with your doctor. If you’re pregnant or have at least one child ages 3 or younger, contact the New Parent Support Program at JBLM.
