Expect good things from MWR this year! The road ahead of us is wide open with expectations of good things to come with the New Year. We can help you get a good start on that road with the many services and resources we provide for everyone at JBLM. For starters, if you’re among the many of us who want better health, take a look at ideas for eating lighter (page 6) and ways to maintain or increase fitness levels (pages 12–13). Why not challenge yourself to learn something fun and new this year? We have suggestions for a variety of interests in the feature article on pages 18–21. Part of your challenge might be to travel to Europe, South America, Thailand or somewhere you’ve always wanted to explore. Find first-hand tips on how to make international travel easier on pages 14–15. Another road you might take is to join others to explore our region, which can be incredibly beautiful in winter. Turn to page 17 for Outdoor Recreation Program trips. Your Family is part of your journey, and you can include them in new experiences with Child & Youth Services (pages 22–23) and the many events at your JBLM libraries (pages 32–33). Armed Forces Community Service/DFPR provides you and your Family opportunities to build the kind of life you want. For instance, in this issue, you’ll learn how you can kick-start a new career with educational opportunities, set and achieve concrete goals for your Family and use specific techniques that sustain changes you want to make for a healthier lifestyle. Plus, you’ll get ample help and instruction along the way (see pages 26–31). We hope we can help you find the good life you strive for both here at JBLM and wherever this year leads you. In turn, we appreciate your input to help us improve our services. Take a few minutes to share your suggestions with us at ice.disa.mil.

The world is a diverse, colorful, musical, talented and extraordinary place that I’m grateful to be able to witness. Now, how can we all get out there and be a part of this masterpiece? Say you’ve been looking at photos for months, admiring the midnight sun in Norway and pinning must-see ancient remnants in Guatemala. Yet, something always seems to hold you back from getting that ticket and going after your dreams. There are many obstacles when it comes to traveling, typically revolving around time and money. Then, once you’ve finally taken the big leap, the warnings come flooding in. We’ve all heard them, usually being concerns of a certain destination. The truth couldn’t be further from these notions — in fact, I believe that everyone should take the opportunity to travel, whether it’s by yourself, with friends, Family or on an organized tour. Leaving your comfort zone in any sense holds remarkable transformational effects, but when it comes to traveling abroad, the benefits are far too many to

Planning is everything I don’t mean that you need to have every single thing set in stone before you even set out. Most of the time, the most sensational moments come when you maintain flexibility and allow yourself to chase whatever opportunities present themselves to you each day. To plan means to educate yourself on where you’re going, and it’s so important to have a knowledge of some below-thesurface cultural qualities. with tools that work

See what AFCS/DFPR can equip you with to navigate the new year with success

AFCS & DFPR form new team As a joint base, JBLM leads the way with many initiatives and offers new opportunities. We continue to see ways to streamline and improve services for our Service members, DOD civilians, retirees and their Families. Most recently, we’re excited to announce the merger of Armed Forces Community Service and the Directorate of Human Resources into the new Directorate of Personnel and Family Readiness. For those of you newer to JBLM, AFCS has been around for a few years, but was created by combining the former Army Community Service and Airman & Family Readiness Center programs and services, including Army Emergency Relief, Air Force Aid Society, Employment and Financial Readiness Programs and EFMP. DHR has also been around for years and houses many programs and services you might recognize, such as in- and out-processing, DEERS/ID cards, Retirement Services, Education Services and Servicemember for Life–Transition Assistance Services. There is no immediate change in services — you’ll find most programs and services in the same location (whether it be Waller Hall, HAWK Transition Center, Stone Ed, AFCS-McChord and several other buildings). Over the coming year, we hope to streamline services to make accessing

them easier and offer diverse services in more locations. We appreciate your patience as we update signs and rebrand our locations — your feedback is welcome at any of our programs at ice.disa.mil. If you need assistance or are trying to locate a program or service, call 253-967-7166.

Kick-start your education & career this year with ACES! JBLM’s Armed Forces Continuing Education System is here to support your education and professional progression! Stone Education Center, located at 6242 Colorado Ave. at Lewis Main, houses local and national university and college branches with an array of degree and certificate programs. Other services include advising, adult basic math and reading skills courses, professional testing and a large student computer lab. Make an appointment or register at stone_ed.checkappointments.com for services and workshops that include: • In-processing (for those new to JBLM). • Educational advising (for assistance with course planning, changes in college/degree programs, financial aid, general assistance and more). • Transition education services (for those leaving the military). • Career Skills Programs (employment training). • GoArmyEd Portal 101 class. ACES can also help you navigate the world of tuition assistance, VA education benefits, scholarships and financial aid. Continued on next page.

EFMP Families can register for a free one-to-one 45-minute IEP/504 clinic (offered by DPFR and PAVE) Thursday, Feb. 8, hosted by CYS School Support Services at JBLM CARES. Families will have an opportunity to send their documents and concerns ahead for advocates to review and make best use of time in working through current concerns or planning for the next aging-up transition (i.e., preparing for high school or post-secondary education as it relates to IEP/504).
