What MWR means to me Our resolve at MWR is to improve your morale, look out for your welfare and give you ways to recreate. Each month, we’re looking at what this means to people who participate in MWR activities and events.

PATTI JEFFREY is the editor of Focus magazine and has been a member of the MWR Marketing team for 19 years.

A new year brings new resolutions, and MWR is here to help us reach our goals if we want to become healthier and more fit this year. MWR means different things to different people, and I like the emphasis on bettering our well-being. Did you know that 41 percent of the those at JBLM think that being overweight is a top physical health concern and that 43 percent believe that a poor diet is also a health concern?* At the same time, 83 percent feel they’re somewhat or very physically fit and only 17 percent admit they aren’t fit. Yet, 31 percent believe that a lack of fitness causes injuries that are a concern for our community. The January Focus issue emphasizes the opportunities you have within MWR facilities to make — and keep making — healthy choices whenever you go out to eat, play and exercise. Since 42 percent of you think that one of JBLM’s top strengths is accessible sports and recreational activities, we encourage you to take advantage of as many of them as possible. Take a look at the 2019 sports calendar on page 22, and all the free aerobics classes available at JBLM on page 23. Find active outdoor recreation trips on page 27. Also learn about healthy dining options on page 5 and how to keep your New Year’s resolutions on page 34. When I think of the Morale, Welfare and Recreation aspects of our organization, we seem to have come a long way in keeping you informed of what’s available to you through this magazine, social media (fb.com/JBLMmwr), our website (JBLMmwr.com), electronic readerboards, LCD display ads and our displays in every MWR facility. If you miss an opportunity to have fun while exercising, playing a sport, running in a race, eating a healthy meal or learning about how to improve your health, know that there’s always another opportunity around the corner each month with MWR. *Survey compiled January 2018 from the I Corps R-2 Team, based on 2,773 responses from active duty personnel, DOD civilians and contractors at JBLM.

New class for one homeschooler Homeschool mom Hailey Lorati talks about her son Noah’s experience with art classes at the Arts & Crafts Center. “Our local elementary school didn’t offer an art class, so I knew right away that when we decided to do learning from home that I wanted to incorporate various avenues of the arts. When MWR responded back about the Arts & Crafts Center at McChord Field being open to homeschoolers, I was very excited. At first, our son, Noah, didn’t share this enthusiastic attitude about art. We decided to go ahead and set up a meet-and-greet with Ms. Debbie from the center. During our tour, I saw a spark in Noah’s eyes as she talked about letting him explore all of the amazing things the center has to offer. Ms. Debbie has been a significant mentor and teacher over the past few months. She cares deeply about Noah. Her teaching method of not forcing art onto him and letting him explore whatever it is that is artistically speaking to him during his weekly visits is working exceptionally well. Our younger children are also benefiting from the center and gaining early exposure to the world of art. I’m so thankful for what Ms. Debbie and the Arts & Crafts Center has done for our homeschooling journey.

Hailey Lorati

Noah has more to look forward to soon, as he will be one of Ms. Debbie’s students in this month’s structured art program for homeschoolers.”

Learn to climb for a lifetime By Brittany Catanzaro, guest contributor o you enjoy the outdoors but want a sense of accomplishment and a challenge during your adventures? Have you looked at the surrounding mountains and wanted to climb them but don’t know where to start? Take a basic alpine climbing course on base through the Outdoor Recreation program! We’re lucky to live in a state with one of the most beautiful and best mountain ranges climbers can explore. Alpine climbing has gained popularity over the last few years due to the spectacular views and challenges that climbers seek. Alpine climbing uses climbing techniques to reach a summit that involves ice, rocks or rock walls and glaciated areas. By taking this course through ODR, you’ll learn the skills to climb mountains for a lifetime. Climbing is a dangerous sport, but this course will teach you the correct way to summit mountains. Not only will you learn the techniques of alpine climbing, you’ll also make friends along the way.

D “The best part of climbing is doing it together.” Scott Schissel, ODR’s lead mountaineering guide and instructor

Equipping you for a lifetime

Scott Schissel

If you’re interested in alpine climbing and want to climb Washington’s most recognizable giants, your first thought might be to hire an expensive private guide who will hold your hand the entire way. Afterward, you may feel ready to climb on your own, but you don’t realize the work that private guides put in, nor do you learn the proper skills.

Continued on next page.

With ODR’s alpine climbing course, you’ll first learn the proper skills so you can climb safely and continue to climb for the rest of your life. Climbing summits can be an epic experience, but there are important matters to consider. Summiting mountains can be a dangerous sport — you may encounter falling rocks, crevasse falls, whiteouts, severe exhaustion and more. ODR’s alpine climbing course focuses on certain techniques and skills needed to safely climb rocky and icy summits in the Pacific Northwest and worldwide. The course is organized like a college course that includes lectures, reading, studying and practicing on your own, field trips, tests and a final exam at the end. You’ll go on an overnight weekend field trip to practice your newfound skills and techniques. All lectures and trips are mandatory in order to graduate. If you need to, you can organize with the instructor to attend a make-up lecture if space is available. Course topics include: • Roped glacier travel. • Use of crampons and ice axe. • Crevasse rescue. • Snow anchors. • Climbing knots. • Belaying and repelling. • Snow camping skills. • Prusiking (ascending a rope). • Wilderness navigation (an additional course). You’ll also get help finding the proper gear and be included on group emails about future international alpine climbing trips. The basic alpine climbing course is less expensive than hiring other types of mountain-climbing guides and teaches you to climb safely and be prepared to get out there and summit mountains. If this alpine climbing course is right for you, sign up at JBLMmwrRegistration.com.

Scott Schissel

Meet Scott Schissel As the lead mountaineering climbing leader and instructor for the ODR program, Scott Schissel hopes to train and lead the next generation of climbers to the summits of their dreams. Scott says, “Everyone should experience the highs and lows of climbing. You tend to learn quite a bit about yourself when the weather and conditions battle you back and make you turn around.” Scott’s extensive training and experience in mountaineering includes: • Summiting peaks around the world, including Nepal. • Outfitting new and experienced outdoor enthusiasts. • Helping others to see the great outdoors for what it is as a National Park Ranger at Yellowstone, Mount Rainier and North Cascades National Parks. • Mountaineers Club instructor and leader in mountaineering, rock climbing, snowshoeing, trail running and backpacking. Scott strives to maintain his physical and mental strength and philosophy of “not climbing a mountain of your lifetime but a lifetime of climbing.”

EAP tip of the month How to keep your New Year’s resolutions Have you considered making a list of things you want to change in the new year? You know, those resolutions centered on improving health, changing diet, finding love or creating wellness in general. In addition to the post-holiday slump, not being able to keep your resolutions by February, March or even late January may increase your anxiety. When your holiday decorations are packed up and stored away, the frustration of an unused gym membership or other reminders of failed resolutions can make the later winter months feel hopeless. Want to improve the odds of keeping your New Year’s resolutions? It’s important to remember that the new year isn’t meant to serve as a complete change of yourself but as an opportunity to assess and calibrate a few changes to improve your overall wellness. It’s a time for folks to reflect on their past year’s behavior and promise to make positive lifestyle changes. To learn how to make more realistic progress, you’re welcome to stop by to see the Employee Assistance Program team at 2008B N. 3rd St. (at Pendleton Avenue), Room B114 at Lewis Main or call 253-732-2214. All of our EAP coordinators wish you a prosperous and productive new year!

FOCUS tip of the month Get tips on goal-setting for your Family Happy New Year! Have you thought about your goals for 2019? Sometimes it can be helpful to set a larger goal, break it down into smaller steps and set deadlines along the way to evaluate your progress toward the goal so that you feel the success of accomplishment! The FOCUS program helps Families set goals and break them down into smaller steps that can be achieved — don’t just get by, get stronger! Come see us! AER Campaign is coming soon Consider helping other Service members by giving Mark your calendars for the 2019 Army Emergency Relief Campaign! Army leadership is raising awareness of the benefits of the financial assistance program and giving Service members the opportunity to donate. JBLM is hosting the 2019 AER Campaign Kickoff Friday, Feb. 22. The campaign runs from Friday, March 1 to Wednesday, May 15. The Armywide campaign raises funds for AER, a private nonprofit organization that provides emergency financial relief to active and retired Service members and their Families in times of need. In 2017, JBLM AER raised $302,108.84 in donations and assisted 1,599 Service members and their Families stationed here with valid emergency situations with $2.2 million. Army leaders have noted that the number of Service members donating to AER has declined 40 percent. In light of that decrease, leaders are urging commands to re-emphasize their fundraising efforts. Stacey Gilbert, JBLM AER officer and accredited financial counselor with JBLM’s Directorate of Personnel & Family Readiness, says it’s important for Service members to be aware of the program and to consider donating. The donations go directly into helping Service members and their Families during their valid financial hardship. JBLM’s goal is to get 100-percent solicitation. To accomplish this goal, our focus is on educating the JBLM community on AER campaign donations and 100 percent contact and awareness. For more information about AER, Service members can contact their local AER officer or visit aerhq.org. To make a donation to AER, visit aerhq.org/donate.

Raising awareness for women’s health Are you aware of health services available to female veterans?

D

id you know that female veterans face greater health-related challenges after military service compared to their male counterparts? Health challenges include chronic pain, obesity, musculoskeletal issues, depression and suicide. Often, female veterans don’t understand what women’s health services are available to help them address their health-related challenges. Additionally, fewer female veterans seek services and support from the Department of Veterans Affairs and often do not connect with the VA until an average of 2.7 years post-military service or until mental or physical health issues have manifested.

Addressing negative trends To address the negative trends in health outcomes for the female veteran population, VA’s Women’s Health Services has partnered with the Air Force Women’s Initiative Team to develop the VA Women’s Health Transition Pilot Training. This program, which began implementing training sessions at Air Force bases in July 2018, intends to address the health needs of transitioning servicewomen. For example, the health transition pilot training aims to provide servicewomen with a deeper understanding of women’s health services available to them within the VA health care system and the VA health care enrollment process for continuation of health care services. The VA is piloting the health transition training at seven bases with Air Force personnel, including Travis AFB, Calif.; MacDill AFB, Fla.; Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio; Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.; Joint Base Andrews,

36

Joint Base Lewis-McChord Focus January 2019

Md., and the Pentagon, Washington, D.C., until late spring 2019. The health transition pilot training discusses the major points along the women veterans’ transition journey (see figure below), focusing on how to enroll in and access health care services at the VA. This interactive, high-energy course is led by a woman veteran and covers: • The transformed culture of VA for both male and female patients. • A range of women’s health and mental healthcare services. • Eligibility for enrollment in VA health care. • Expectations for women to proactively seek health care services post-separation. • Transition assistance. • Logistical details, such as facility structure, locations and points of contact. The afternoon session of the training includes a presentation by local VA Medical Center staff to provide specific information about local services and facilities to help participants understand how the VA could best meet their health care needs. Participants have enjoyed the trainings, including learning new information about VA

“Every female should come experience this class in order to get a full view of the VA services and support available to female veterans.” Recent participant

culture and services and having a forum to ask women-specific health questions. One participant says, “I would recommend this course because this is a great, open environment to ask questions and get gender-specific information. I invited other women [to register for the course today] but they couldn’t attend. I will now highly recommend/insist that they attend the next offering.”

Sign up for JBLM sessions At JBLM, upcoming sessions for transitioning servicewomen to take the VA Women’s

Health Transition Pilot Training are Wednesdays, Jan. 9, Feb. 6, March 6 and April 10. All sessions will take place at the Family Resource Center at 4274 Idaho Ave., Lewis Main from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. To sign up, visit JBLM-women-transition. eventbrite.com or call 253-967-7166 or 253-477-4744.
