Why not your car loan? If you think buying a locally raised rump roast makes a difference, imagine how a bigger purchase, like a local car loan, supports the community. Right now, Harborstone Credit Union has barn loads of money to lend to people who not only want to drive a new car but drive the local economy too. Who could possibly have a beef with that?

Take control of

Financial Readiness counselors can help you get off the financial roller coaster and get you confidently steering yourself to retirement. By Ryki Carlson, JBLM Financial Counselor
F
inancial procrastination costs money. Each day you
ASK THE MONEY EXPERTS
delay in taking control of your finances, you could be costing yourself hundreds, or even thousands, of dollars. Although we learn from a young age that patience is a virtue, this isn’t true with finances. Most people view financial procrastination as caution or convenience. However, this outlook could prevent you from reaching financial security. Here are several ways you pay by not taking control of your
28
personal finances: • Putting off your bills even for a few days can cause missed or late payments. These small delays can lead to lower credit scores and higher interest rates and fees. • Waiting to build an emergency fund can lead to disaster. Being unprepared when a financial emergency arises adds not only financial stress but
emotional stress to your life. • Not setting clear goals prevents you from reaching them. Goals help you design a path to succeed financially and emotionally. Everyone should have both short-term and long-term goals. • Failing to communicate with your spouse about financial matters can lead to arguments and stress.
Q: How do I start contributing to my Thrift Savings Plan? Where does the money go?
A:
To start contributing to your TSP account, either download the TSP-U-1 form from tsp.gov or log on to your MyPay account and select “Thrift Savings Plan.” Complete either the paper form or the electronic version to show what percentage of basic pay, incentive pay, special pay or bonus pay you’d like to contribute. (You may also choose the dollar amount that will be deducted from your pay each pay period.) The paper form needs to be submitted to your pay department; if you use the electronic form on MyPay, you submit electronically. Be sure your mailing address is up to date when you open your TSP account. Soon after your account is open, you’ll receive three mailings: a welcome letter, your account number and personal identification number. These mailings will come separately to ensure security. Once you receive your account number and PIN, you’ll need to decide where to invest your contribution. Do this through tsp.gov or call the ThriftLine at 1-TSP-YOU-FRST. If you don’t make a selection for contribution allocations, the funds will be invested in the G Fund (government bonds). Changing your contribution allocation changes all future deposits, not the money you’ve already invested. To move money that’s already in the account, you’ll need to complete an interfund transfer at the website listed above.
