Y

ou’re into the summer months and want to enjoy more outdoor fun with the kiddos than just taking them to spray parks and playgrounds. You’re on a limited budget, but wish you could have a mini-getaway that’s also great fun for your youngsters. Why not take them on a wilderness adventure that they’ll never forget! Leave behind the TV, electronic games and everyday distractions for a completely natural outdoor experience in the beautiful Pacific Northwest.

Getting started on your nature experience Get started by deciding what you want to do — for instance, take a day hike, camp somewhere close overnight or go on a car tour with short nature stop-nwalks in the mountains or at the ocean. You’ll want to talk about your expectations for your outing — will trails or campsites be kid-friendly? Will you allow them to take their electronic games for entertainment on a campout? Or will you want to “rough it” overnight with tent camping, board games and active outdoor games?

18

Joint Base Lewis-McChord Focus July 2017

If it will be your first experience in the wilderness with your youngsters, the best way to introduce them is to start small and let them get comfortable on wilderness trails or camping overnight.

Day hike locations are plentiful The list for easy kid-friendly day hikes is endless for this region, but some noteworthy hikes are just outside JBLM. For instance, the Nisqually Wildlife Refuge has an amazing boardwalk and level nature paths for people of any ability to explore the tidal basin. Priest Point State Park offers forested trails that lead to beach-combing fun in the South Puget Sound. Point Defiance Park in North Tacoma is sprinkled with forested trails, beachfront walks and scenic vistas overlooking the Narrows. Other nearby hikes include Millersylvania State Park’s Deep Lake, Capitol State Forest’s Porter Falls and Tolmie State Park, a saltwater shoreline park. If you want to venture further out, find easy mountain forest trails around the region at wta.org/go-outside/kids. Also locate hikes by region at parks. state.wa.us. The regional maps show all the parks in that region, and clicking on a specific park gives you all the details.

Camping overnight’s a blast Even if you don’t own any tents, sleeping bags or camp gear for camping overnight, there’s no need to buy equipment — rent your supplies from Outdoor Recreation! The Northwest Adventure Center and Adventures Unlimited can supply you with everything you need for your campsite. Visit the Community Update page at JBLMmwr.com under Outdoor Recreation rentals for lists or call either location for advice. Since most campsites are heavily reserved on summer weekends, try reserving a spot midweek. If it’s your first time out, look into camping overnight at the NAC’s tent campsites at Lewis North or at Holiday Park’s campsites at McChord Field.

Traveling to your nature spot You’ll need permits for most sites, but having an interagency federal pass or a Discover Pass should cover most state and national park areas. All active duty military members can snag a free annual pass to national parks (an $80 value!).

Get your pass at any national park or wildlife refuge that charges an entrance fee by showing your military ID. Each Family member will also be able to obtain their own pass even if the Service member is deployed or if they are traveling separately.

common for adventurous kids outdoors. Establish rules for your children when you’re hiking so no one gets lost (see comments below) and remember trail etiquette (leave no trash or waste behind, let other hikers pass and don’t take anything from the woods).

Most of all, have fun and enjoy bonding closer as a Family on your outdoor adventures! Thanks to outdoor recreation specialists Kaweka Stoney and Brad Hinton and to our Facebook contributors for sharing their expertise and experiences.

Also remember that if you’re traveling anywhere by ferry, reservations are a must during summer months.

Keep everyone safe! Prepare not only for the weather, but for the worst kind of weather — just in case a quick weather shift appears and you need a rain flap over your tent and tarp over your campsite, rain gear and extra warm clothes. Always dress in layers on a hike and bring extra food and water, sun protection, a map and compass (or GPS receiver), flashlight, multiuse tool and duct tape for quick repairs to a shoe, torn backpack or torn clothing. Include a waterproof tarp for emergency shelter in a downpour. Also bring a first aid kit on your hike — scrapes, cuts, bites and rashes are

What experienced parents recommend (source: fb.com/JBLMFamilyMWR) Loop trails rated for kids are the most fun for everyone. By the time the kids get tired, you’re already past the halfway point, so you might as well keep going! We also enjoy trails that have a fun rest spot to eat lunch — the summit of a mountain or a fun waterfall or beach can be unforgettable. They need to stay where they can look back and see us. If they can’t see us, they need to stop and wait. They need to stop when we call their name. And they need to stay on the trail. Family camping can be great if you are prepared to stay warm enough — the Northwest nights get cold no matter how hot the days are! Good sleeping bags and warm sleeping clothes are a must. –Piper M.

Never let your children out of your sight. –Amanda W. Bring water and layer! –Mindy F. M. Get them their own stuff to carry, a water bottle with snacks that are just for them. (I carry a little extra for them in my bag because mine eat/drink a lot). Interact with games, stories, songs or just talk. We usually make a list of things we might see while out and cross them off if we do. My kids also have pocket book guides for plants, insects and animals. Plan to take your time and enjoy the trip. Stop when they find something interesting — or when you do. Explain to each other why and encourage them in what they like about the trail or to finish what they’ve started. –Pamela S.

Services are free for active duty Service members and their Families. Currently, AER has teamed up with the Army Criminal Investigation Command, Federal Bureau of Investigation and other prevention organizations to investigate the scam and identify the culprits. In the meantime, AER headquarters developed a plan to reduce the incidents of these fraudulent checks. AER clients who receive a check are informed to cash or deposit valid AER checks at their banking institution. Those who deposit the check through mobile apps will have a 24-hour hold. This period allows time for AER to validate the check. Once checks are authenticated, they will clear as normal. AER officers have alternative processes to follow for emergency leave cases. If you stay vigilant, you don’t have to be a victim. The tips below are ways to keep from being fooled by scam artists: • AER does not ask Soldiers, retirees or their Families for a login and password for their online banking

buyer beware!

What you need to know to avoid this check scam A new scam involving the use of fraudulent checks and mobile deposit apps to gain access to bank accounts of Service members and their Families has surfaced, according to a memo recently released by Army Emergency Relief. AER headquarters in Arlington, Va., recently reported that a check scam has compromised users’ bank account information. It also said that the scam specifically targets Soldiers, retirees and military Family members. According to AER, scammers forge counterfeit AER checks and offer Soldiers opportunities to “earn some easy money.” When affected parties provide scammers with their bank account information, scammers deposit the fraudulent checks in different banks through mobile depositing apps. Incidents of forgery and illicit bank access have occurred since early December 2016 and have affected various banks.

sites. If anyone asks you for this information because they need help depositing funds from an AER assistance application, do not share it and contact your local authorities immediately. • Never give your bank account information to anyone promising to help you earn easy money or who tells you they need your help cashing a check because they’re out of the country, too busy, etc. Scam artists are obtaining other people’s banking information and withdrawing funds from their accounts. • Be careful about accepting checks — even cashier’s checks — from people you don’t know. Call the bank listed on the check to make sure the check is genuine and never use the funds before the check clears. • Never accept a check for more than you’re due with the request to send the overpayment to a third party. Beware of “easy money” scams, and always safeguard your personal banking

practice mindfulness

Tip of the month from Employee Assistance Program To stay in the present, one must practice mindfulness. The benefits of awareness with acceptance may help you manage many negative factors that can impact your health, emotional well-being and relationships. The practice of awareness with acceptance is a form of mindfulness that focuses and guides you to embrace, learn and release experiences in the present. In the words of Elsa from the movie Frozen, “Let it go.” Let go with purpose and resolution. These are a few of the benefits of practicing awareness with acceptances: • Ability to act consciously instead of reacting to people and events. • Ability to redirect negative thoughts and emphasize positive ones. • Behaving positively instead of creating obstacles/drama. • Enjoying positive interpersonal relationships. • Being your best self. Exercising mindfulness can start you on a path of reducing stress, increasing healthier interpersonal relationships and creating a positive outlook in general. Should you wish to speak with someone about decreasing stress and increasing mindfulness, please stop by to see the Employee Assistance Program at Lewis Main, 2008B N. 3rd St., room 114. JBLM Child supervision guidelines When is your child old enough to stay home alone?

Build personal and professional skills with free AFFTB workshops If you’re new to the military lifestyle, AFCS Armed Forces Family Team Building has classes to help you adapt to, understand and enjoy your new lifestyle. If you’ve been in for a while, AFFTB classes can help you improve your personal skills, learn how to support your spouse’s leadership role or to enhance your leadership skills. Tell us what you need, when you want it and where, and we’ll provide the training. AFFTB is located inside the Family Resource Center at 4274 Idaho Ave. at 9th Division at Lewis Main. If you’d like to learn more, stop by today or call 253-967-2832. Visit JBLMafcs. checkappointments.com to register for classes.

Make time for YOU resiliency tip of the month

Keep your cool and take time for you Let the summer celebrations begin! The warm weather of July is upon us, which often means a busy schedule of Family gatherings, barbecues and celebrations. Sometimes, a busy schedule can be overwhelming. We can lose our cool, causing those fun times to become frustrating ones! One way to keep your cool during a busy schedule is to take time for yourself — even just a few minutes can make a difference. Schedule a 10-minute break (or however long you can spare) to take a walk, read a book, stretch and take a deep breath. The Families OverComing Under Stress office — known as FOCUS — teaches a variety of useful skills that can help you recharge your batteries and maintain your cool. Don’t just get by, get stronger! FOCUS is located at 2013B N. 3rd St. (at Pendleton Avenue) in Room 331. For details, call 253-966-6390, email JBLM@focusproject.org or visit FocusProject.org and fb.com/FOCUSresiliencytraining.
