Editor’s note: We’d like to offer a special note of thanks to Bill Harvey, director of MWR. He’s retiring after 44 years of continuous service to this organization. Not only has he seen a great many changes in the directorate through joint basing, he has embraced and promoted the idea of welcoming and serving all Service members, their Families and civilians working and living at JBLM as part of this joint community. What MWR means to me Our resolve at MWR is to improve your morale, look out for your welfare and give you ways to recreate. Each month, we’re looking at what this means to people who participate in MWR activities and events.
BILLY WOMBLE is an intramural sports and races coordinator with JBLM’s Sports, Fitness & Aquatics program.

MWR means many things to me. MWR has helped me travel the country and meet thousands of new people. Throughout my career, I’ve learned many valuable lessons, made many friends and helped thousands of customers and Service members. MWR means Family. I’ve watched Families and children grow up through our programs and have made lifelong friends. MWR not only boosts morale but provides ways to become more active in the community. MWR gives a chance to give back to the community every day, to make customers happy and have a great experience while they’re serving our country. MWR means service — service to the men and women who serve our country and make sacrifices every day. Service to their Families and a chance to give back to my country and help people. The chance to help people daily is one of my favorite things I get to do in MWR. It feels good to see people leave our facilities happy. MWR provides so many services to Service members and their Families and it’s constantly adapting to the changing world around us. It’s a great outlet for people to relax and enjoy the benefits and services that MWR can provide. MWR offers services from sports and fitness, libraries, outdoor recreation opportunities and so much more. I love what we have to offer and being a part of that daily. MWR is a great place to work. Even when not at work, MWR provides resources and activities for me and my Family to enjoy and use. To me, MWR is more than a career, it’s a commitment and lifelong passion to serve and help others, and for that opportunity, I’m grateful.

Water Conservation at JBLM As Joint Base Lewis-McChord and surrounding communities continue to grow, the demand for water increases, along with the need for conservation. To ensure a sustainable supply exists for present and future training needs at JBLM, here’s a quick guide.
Residential: 10 minutes a day per irrigation location/zone or sprinkler head Level 1: Houses with even numbers water on even days; houses with odd numbers water on odd days.
General landscape and turfnonpride areas: 10 minutes a day per irrigation location/zone or sprinkler head Level 1: Water every third day (optimum)
Level 2: Even house numbers water Wednesdays and Saturdays; odd house numbers water Thursdays and Sundays.
Level 2: Water every fourth day (deficit)
Level 3: Outside water use is not allowed.
Pride areas: Sports fields, golf courses and parade fields have specific guidance based on the turf type, irrigation system and intensity of use.
Level 3: Water every seventh day (survival)
Effective irrigation is to apply the correct amount of water at the correct time to optimize uptake by the root system. Conservation measures were developed using regional local weather station evapotranspiration data that provides a scientific basis for healthy growth.

By Brittany Catanzaro ant to take a trip through the Outdoor Recreation program for a stress-free day trip adventure? ODR provides transportation to and from Port Angeles for a round-trip walk-on ferry ride to Victoria, B.C., several times a year (the ferry ride is included in the trip cost). I took the spring trip with a friend and rode the spacious and comfortable ferry from Port Angeles to Victoria, B.C., crossing the Strait of Juan de Fuca. I made sure to grab a tourist map of Victoria before getting off the ferry.
W
Once in Canada, we were free to explore on our own, no tour needed. We were allotted six hours of time to explore, which ended up being the perfect amount of time. Victoria is a beautiful, fun and unique adventure. Everything is walking distance from the ferry. Exploring on our own made our time in Victoria more exciting and a perfect adventure. We arrived at 10 a.m. and were excited to make the best of our trip. There’s so much to see and do in Victoria, but we had the opportunity to see everything on our list. Continued on next page.

At our first stop, my friend and I visited the Huntingdon Manor Hotel with a Victorian tea house located along the Waterfront Trail. (Locals love their tea, and it’s extremely popular in the area.) The manor is beautiful and worth a stop to take a picture. Definitely add tea tasting to your to-do list while visiting! Next, we continued along the waterfront trail to the charming Fisherman’s Wharf. You can enjoy different types of food — seafood, Mexican, ice cream and more! Be sure to walk around the colorful and unique boathouses. Fisherman’s Wharf is a beautiful area that has picturesque views of the harbor. We finished the Waterfront Trail by taking in the gorgeous sea views while passing by the lush parks. After strolling along the waterfront trail, we moved onto Douglas Street/Trans-Canada Highway, where the city is booming with shops and dining. We stopped by St. Andrews Presbyterian Church and City Hall to gaze at the magnificent architecture. Next, we walked onto Chinatown with many

Chinese restaurants to choose from, plus cute Chinese artisan shops. Hidden in Chinatown is Town Fan Tan Alley — a fun street with music and Chinese decorations hanging above and all over. It’s a quaint, narrow alley with adorable artisan shops. Walking down the alley decorated in Chinese decor made us feel like we entered a new country within the city. After exploring Chinatown, we headed to Market Square and Old Town for more shopping. We found a few unique and adorable shops, like the stationery store filled with cards, paper, pens and more. We ate at a cute French pastry shop called La Roux Patisserie. The atmosphere was charming and it was lovely to relax while enjoying tea and delicious pastries. We decided to make our way to the Fairmont Empress Hotel, a gorgeous hotel that resembles a castle. We strolled around inside and were in awe of the sophisticated decor. Czech Republic was my favorite. You have the choice for high tea at the Empress, where you can enjoy tea and pastries in the sophisticated lobby lounge, which has an amazing view of the harbor. You must reserve at least a few hours in advance. We ended our trip by walking around the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia before heading back to the ferry. These gorgeous parliament buildings overlook Inner Harbour. You can take a free guided tour of the buildings that lasts 30–45 minutes. Also visit the parliament dining room and gift shop, open to the public. Other places you can visit either within walking distance or by bus: • The world-famous Butchart Gardens. • Graigdarroch Castle. • Victoria Conservatory of Music. • Beacon Hill Park. • Whale tours at Fisherman’s Wharf. • Unity Wall and Breakwater Walk. • Royal BC Museum’s IMAX Theater. The next scheduled trips to Victoria take advantage of fall colors Saturdays, Sept. 21 and Oct. 19. Register at JBLMmwrRegistration.com or email JBLMadventuretrips@gmail.com for more information.

EAP tip of the quarter Empty nester, anyone? Summer is here and, for some employees, it’s the beginning of a new Family adventure that includes seeing an only child or last child move away from home, whether to college, the military or other employment. New beginnings can be exciting times, but parents might also be experiencing some mixed emotions. If you’re one of the many parents who are faced with seeing a child off into the world, you may be struggling with the empty nest phenomenon, according to Dr. Jessica Sosso, Family Medicine, Mayo Clinic Health System. Seeing this new chapter of life as a new beginning or adventure can help parents prepare for a new normal both at home and at work. Dr. Sosso and experts in the human sciences field offer some the following tips for a successful adjustment: 1. Acknowledge the impact of the event. Your Family and relationship with your child is changing — self-care and tending to your own feelings will help you support your young adult toward independence. 2. Consider taking time to rekindle your relationship with your partner. Perhaps life has been busy with multiple commitments while raising a Family. Rediscovering your partner or rekindling interests provides a new
46
Joint Base Lewis-McChord Focus July 2019
opportunity to reconnect. 3. Take care of yourself. If you’ve been neglecting health, establish a routine for exercise, rest and a healthy diet. 4. Seek support. Reach out to a friend or loved one for support by sharing your feelings. If you find that you’re feeling depressed, consult with your health care provider or the Employee Assistance Program. 5. Stay positive. Consider the new adventures that await you and your adult child. As you celebrate this accomplishment, consider the extra time you’ll have to devote to your relationships and personal interests. 6. Embrace technology. Have a discussion with your child about what will work best to stay in touch as they establish healthy boundaries. To learn more about this topic and many more, please stop by to see Employee Assistance Program team members located at 2008B N. 3rd (at Pendleton Avenue), Room 114 at Lewis Main or call 253-732-2214. For crisis resources: • If you’re in crisis or experiencing difficult or suicidal thoughts, call the National Suicide Hotline at 1-800-273 TALK (8255). • Text option: The National Crisis Line text at 741-741 will connect individuals to a free, trained crisis counselor.
Attend ‘CLEP-a-Thon’ Take all the tests you want for college credit Stone Education Center is offering a twoday test site for earning college credits at its “CLEP-a-Thon” Fridays, Aug. 16 and 23 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. • For CLEP: Go to clep.collegeboard.org and create an account. Once you’ve created and logged into your account, you may schedule an exam. There’s no fee for exams if you are active duty military. Please make sure to note in your profile that you are Dantes funded. Once you’ve completed registering for your test, you’ll print out your CLEP ticket (or you may show it on your phone when you come in to test). If you don’t have your CLEP ticket, you won’t be able to be tested! • For DSST: You must have two forms of picture identification (CAC, driver’s license or DEERs ID). If you’ve taken a DSST previously, please bring your username and password to your session. If you’re new to taking a DSST exam, you’ll create a profile and account in the testing center when you come to take your exam.
