What MWR means to me Our resolve at MWR is to improve your morale, look out for your welfare and give you ways to recreate. Each month, we’re looking at what this means to people who participate in MWR activities and events.

JENNIFER HELM is the Recreation Delivery System program manager. She oversees all Community Recreation Division events to ensure MWR is providing our JBLM community outstanding and exciting events.

4

In 2011, I was a young private stationed at JBLM as a member of the 42nd MP BDE, 571st MP CO. I remember being anxious, nervous and excited for unit exercises and possibilities of deployment. Like many here at JBLM, I soon grew tired of the everyday PT-motorpool-training-gym routine and turned to MWR for excitement in the Better Opportunities for Single Service members program. While serving as the BOSS rep in 571st MP CO, I learned more about MWR. I knew my unit would benefit from the trips and rentals offered by the Northwest Adventure Center. Within the first month, single Service members were now getting out, getting active and truly experiencing the great Pacific Northwest. Seeing the change it had made in the morale of my unit, I grew very passionate about the program. I became the BOSS president in 2013. It is truly one of the most rewarding positions you can hold in your military career (check out our current BOSS program at fb.com/ BOSSJBLM and read more on page 9). Following my ETS in 2016, I was hired as the JBLM race coordinator. I’ve seen what MWR can do for the well-being and morale of Service members and Families. I’ve seen a Soldier overcome fear of rapid waters by taking a raft down a 10-foot waterfall with the Outdoor Recreation program, a Soldier who came to me feeling alone and discouraged and is now surrounded by friends at the Warrior Zone and a cancer survivor who completed her first sprint-triathlon while MWR employees and Service members ran beside her in the final stretch. I’m now the Recreation Delivery System program manager, where I work alongside MWR employees from all facilities across JBLM. These individuals truly dedicate their lives to this installation and its military community members. In my experience here, these civilians love what they do because they love whom they do it for. What is MWR to me? MWR is the support system for Service members and their Families 365 days a year!

Here are some tips from the staff for getting the best for less: • If you’re a military Family planning a Disney vacation, buy special 2018 Disney Military Salute tickets good through Wednesday, Dec. 19. Also reserve your specially priced Disneyland Resort room (for active duty and retired U.S. military personnel). • Instead of purchasing Disney packages, buy individual tickets for hotels, car rentals and airfare with military discounts. You’ll save more money and get more of what you want. Talk to the staff first if you need help. • Even though some customers can squeeze in a last-minute vacation, look into next year’s cruises early and reserve your holiday cruises now before the cruise lines are totally booked. • Would you like to explore Mount Rainier or Olympic National Park? If you’re an active duty military Family or active volunteer, take advantage of “America the Beautiful” free yearly passes to national parks wherever you travel (an $80 value!). Get your pass

at any national park or wildlife refuge that charges an entrance fee by showing your military ID. Veterans, seniors and those with disabilities can get discounts on passes. Check out store.usgs.gov/pass. • Ask the staff how to save money on outings that you may be planning. They’ll point you toward money-saving websites, such as Military Merits (militarymerits.com) or the Armed Forces Vacation Club (afvclub.com). • Visit multiple attractions for one low price with Go Cards and Explorer passes on your vacation. LTS offers discount passes to sites in Oahu, Hawaii; San Francisco, Hollywood, San Diego and Los Angeles Calif.; Las Vegas, Nev.; Orlando and Miami, Fla.; San Antonio, Texas; and New York, N.Y. • Buy your theme-park passes first at LTS before you go on your summer vacation. You’ll get the very best discounts for military Families. For current package deals, visit JBLMmwr.com/leisure_travel and click on your area of interest. • Want to stay at the ocean? Book a rental at Pacific Beach, a Navy-owned resort that has fantastic discounts for DOD and military personnel. Visit navylifepnw.com and look under Pacific Beach. Inquires can be directed to pacbeach@navylifepnw.com. • Waves of Honor permits U.S. active duty military, Reserve and National Guard to one complimentary admission, plus up to three direct dependents per year to SeaWorld, Busch Gardens, Adventure Island, Water Country USA or Sesame Place. Offers vary throughout the year. • Everyone with a DOD ID can snag discounts with Disneyland base and park hopper tickets, Six Flags Magic Mountain, Universal Studios and the USS Midway in San Diego or the USS Iowa in Los Angeles. Other California attractions include Legoland, dining cruises, Sea World and the San Diego Zoo. LTS is located at 2272 Liggett Ave. and is open Tuesdays from 10 a.m. –4 p.m. and Wednesdays–Saturdays from 11 a.m.–6 p.m.

BE PART OF THE SOLUTION! Dear Madigan Patients, We understand your frustration with current wait times at the Madigan Outpatient Pharmacy, and we sincerely thank you for your patience and understanding as we continue our transition to MHS GENSIS. To help move the prescription filling process along, there are several things you can do to help! 1. Please have your military ID card ready before coming to the window. Every second counts! 2. Know the medication names that you're receiving. This helps us identify which prescriptions we are filling faster, especially for those who may have multiple medications on file. 3. Please put away cell phones when you are at the window. We need your full attention because we may ask questions for your safety. 4. Don't pull multiple tickets and leave! We call every single ticket, and wait for that patient to show at the window. When patients don't show, that's added time to the wait for others. Again, your patience in our implementation of MHS GENESIS has been valuable.

Joint Base Lewis-McChord Focus March 2018

Use helpful resources for yourself & your Family Get free help with Family support & transitions Use New Parent Support Program The New Parent Support Program was designed to help expecting military Families (or those with children ages 4 and younger) adjust to parenthood and thrive as healthy Families — no matter where the service may take them. Being a parent can be difficult. The stressors of military life, such as frequent moves to unfamiliar locations, separation from extended Family and friends and frequent deployments, can make normal parenting problems feel overwhelming. If you feel like stress is affecting how you parent or if you just feel like you need extra support, we’re here to provide that support. The NPSP has a team of licensed social workers and community health nurses who have extensive knowledge and experience in child development and parenting. The NPSP program provides home visits (up to a 50-mile radius of JBLM), parenting classes (child care coupons available) and supervised play groups. The NPSP office is located at 2013A N. 3rd St. between Pendleton and Liggett avenues at Lewis Main. Office hours are 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m. weekdays. To enroll in the NPSP, call the Family Advocacy Program information line at 253-967-5901.

Prepare for your deployment with JBLM Military Resource Expos Help prepare you and your Family for the military mission with JBLM Mission Resource Expos, a one-stop shop for all of your deployment and military resources. There are several upcoming dates in March and April – contact your unit representative for a date and time slot. Units must coordinate attendance by calling 253-967-8430. The expos include a commander and agency briefings — Tricare, Red Cross, JAG, on- and off-base housing, OPSEC, DPFR and more. Free child care is available and resource tables are on-site. Call 253-967-8430 for more information.

of their accomplishments to the organization or community and why the nominated individual volunteer or Family should be recognized as Volunteer or Family of the Year. Nominations will be reviewed by a panel independently and selections will be announced at the annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon and Awards Ceremony from 11:30 a.m.–1 p.m Thursday, May 10 at the Club at McChord Field. Nominations must be accompanied with a completed nomination form and may be hand-carried to the Family Resource Center, 4274 Idaho Ave. at Lewis Main or emailed to the Installation Volunteer Corps program manager no later than 4:30 p.m. Monday, March 19. FOCUS Tip of the Month Handling transitions well It’s March and soon we’ll transition from winter to spring! Military Families experience many transitions, and it can be stressful. Sitting down as a Family and talking about things that will be the same, things that will be different and things you hope will be better can be a great activity to come together and prepare for any transition. The FOCUS program works with Families to prepare for all kinds of changes, including deployment, homecomings and PCS. FOCUS is at 2013A N. 3rd St., Room 331 (between Pendleton and Liggett avenues) at Lewis Main. Families can contact FOCUS directly to gather more information and sign up for the program. For more information, call 253-966-6390 or email us at JBLM@focusproject.org.

EAP Tip of the Month ‘People First’ tips for Disabilities Awareness Month

How do we engage with and support colleagues who are quietly dealing with hidden disabilities?

38

Approximately 56.7 million people (19 percent of the U.S. population) reported a disability in 2010, according to a broad definition of disabilities report released by the U.S. Census Bureau. During March, Disabilities Awareness Month, we have an opportunity to promote respect for people with disabilities and increase awareness of the challenges that may be faced by individuals and their Families on a regular basis. In the workplace, disabilities can be visible or hidden. How each one is managed and supported can be challenging in general. Visible disabilities can be seen by employees and management. However, what happens with disabilities that cannot be seen? In many cases, individuals with hidden disabilities may be managing by taking medications, having adaptable work schedules or having periods of prolong absences from work. Some examples of hidden disabilities are epilepsy, ADHD, bipolar disorders, arthritis, fibromyalgia and lupus. As we spend the majority of our waking hours in the workplace, how do we engage with and support colleagues who are quietly dealing with these conditions or who may be afraid of labels or stereotypes if identified as disabled? The Illinois Department of Human Services highlights several ways to reframe questions and engage in “People First” interactions: • Focus on people first. Use language that reflects respect. Remember that individuals with disabilities are people first. Consider the golden rule — treat individuals the way they would like to be treated. • Always ask before giving assistance. Not unlike any other interaction in our lives, it’s important to communicate. Consider asking if assistance is needed before assuming it is. • Think before you speak. Avoid labels that may be offensive. Consider using people first language when writing or speaking about disability. An example of language to avoid would be “midget” when referring to a person of short stature or “psycho” when referring to someone who may have a mental or psychiatric disability.

Joint Base Lewis-McChord Focus March 2018

The reality is that no one can predict if and when a condition may develop that can impair our abilities. Resources and support awareness can make our workplaces more accepting and productive. To learn more about this topic, stop by to see the JBLM Employee Assistance Program team 2013A N. 3rd St., room 114 (between Pendleton and Liggett avenues) at Lewis Main or call 253-732-2214. How do we engage with and support colleagues who are quietly dealing with hidden disabilities?

Remember to vote by absentee ballot It's a midterm election year, and that means 435 seats in Congress — plus state and local positions — are up for grabs. Military members, their Families and American citizens abroad (#AmCits) can vote in the upcoming primaries by requesting an absentee ballot at http://FVAP.gov. Pay close attention to state deadlines to ensure your vote counts! Service members, eligible Family members and overseas citizens may use the Federal Post Card Application to register and request an absentee ballot. The form is accepted by all states and territories. Complete, sign and send the FPCA to your election office. If you’re not currently registered, your FPCA needs to be postmarked by Monday, March 26. If you’re currently registered, your FPCA ballot request must be received by Friday, April 13. If you need assistance, call the JBLM Installation Voting Assistance Office at 253-477-4540 or the visit the office at Waller Hall, 2140 Liggett Ave. at Lewis Main. Office hours are 8:30 a.m.–noon and 12:30–4 p.m.

More than likely you take the time to plan Family vacations that include researching the airfare, hotel and things to do.

40

Joint Base Lewis-McChord Focus March 2018

Why wouldn’t you do the same with someone you are about to trust with major financial decisions or even your life’s earnings?

By Janine C. Dorsey, AFC®, Personal Financial Readiness Specialist riends and Family are amazing, right? We love and respect them so much that when they offer advice, we automatically listen. Of course, that’s relatively harmless when we’re discussing the best places to eat or where to get our hair cut. Now, if your friends or Family are professionally certified, then great! But, nine times out of 10 you may hear, “Aunt Mable heard from her neighbor, whose son works at a bank and he says we should all buy Bitcoin now!” Acting on inaccurate advice could cause you serious financial issues and irreparable consequences. Financial advice should never be taken lightly. Before speaking with someone about your finances, do your homework. More than likely, you take the time to plan Family vacations that include researching the airfare, hotel and things to do. Why wouldn’t you do the same with someone you’re about to trust with major financial decisions or even your life’s earnings? The first step is to decide what type of professional financial assistance you need. There are planners, accountants, investment advisers and more. Online verification sites can provide you with qualifications and certifications, depending upon the type of financial advice that you’re seeking. The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority provides a broker check and the Security Exchange Commission can provide the same information regarding registered investment advisors. Once you select a professional, remember that you should never feel pressured to continue if you aren’t comfortable. They should always be professional, courteous and answer all of your questions. If you aren’t satisfied at any point, you have the right to leave and choose a better fit for your needs. Still unsure? Feel free to reach out to contact the JBLM Financial Readiness Program at 253-967-1453 today!
