ave a craving for new adventure but don’t know where to start? Let the experts at the Outdoor Recreation Program help find you new ways to explore the world both near and far!
In the past few years, the ODR program has intentionally pushed the limits to new horizons on outdoor exploration and fun for just about every age, skill level and interest. The program planners keep their ears open to customer input for new trips, which keeps the program both relevant and current for the JBLM community. They even plan custom trips for groups within the customer’s budget. “If a group wants to plan a trip with us, we can find the best and least expensive ways to make it totally enjoyable,” says Kaweka Stoney, program guide. Within the past year or two, the program has begun to offer international travel for mountain climbing, photography, skiing, outdoor yoga and adventure in other countries. The ODR staff takes care of all the logistics for the trips and helps each participant know how to prepare for their international adventure. “We offer lower prices for these trips than what you’d find elsewhere,” Photos: MWR & ODR staff

says Kaweka. “We take our own equipment and make folks aware of the option of military flights, which are a lot less expensive than commercial flights.”
Specialty trips introduce beginners to outdoor activities If you haven’t been exposed to a particular type of outdoor activity, such as rock climbing, scuba diving or kayaking, the ODR staff can teach you the basics and help you step up to the next level, if you wish. “Bella Donna” trips designed just for women allow new friendships to develop in a relaxing and therapeutic atmosphere, such as backcountry skiing, outdoor yoga, paddleboarding and river adventures. Take up rock climbing or alpine climbing with the experts, who will work with you to gradually improve your skill level all the way to the summit. Try your hand at fishing on a lake at JBLM. Get fishing tips from the folks at the Northwest Adventure Center or Russell Landing Marina while you rent gear and watercraft. Learn how to hunt at JBLM. The next hunter safety courses at the Recreational Shotgun Shooting Complex meet daily May 15–19 and June 12–16. Classes fill fast — register for a May class at https:// www.register-ed.com/events/view/96049.
Get up-close and personal encounters on the waters of Puget Sound with kayaking and scuba. Kayak trips are wildly popular during the warm months and are planned with beginners in mind. Each trip takes advantage of the tides so you can easily paddle to popular spots around the local waters. Scuba classes begin in an indoor pool to familiarize you with equipment and help you become comfortable learning and performing tasks underwater. Only when you master the tasks you learn in the pool will you be introduced to open water. After you pass skills tests on open water, you’ll be guided on an underwater tour that will introduce you to all the beautiful wildlife that exists below. Learn how to ride an ATV with the ATV RiderCourse™, a program designed by the ATV Safety Institute. The course provides a fast-paced, half-day handson training session which includes ride inspection, starting and stopping, quick turns, hill riding and more. You’ll also learn about protective gear, local regulations, places to ride and environmental concerns. The Adventures section starting on page 16 offers even more ideas for new experiences. For trip information, call the Northwest Adventure Center at 253-967-6263.
Customer comments about ODR trips Customers regularly leave comments on the Interactive Customer Evaluation website run by the DOD at ice.disa.mil. Here are several recent comments: “The new mountaineering program is incredible. The new staff is overflowing with useful information and their ability to answer even the most naive questions in such a respectable way is evidence of their professionalism.” “I took the Basic Mountaineering Course… Safety and education are clearly very important to John and the rest of the staff.” “I have always wanted to learn to kayak. The [basic kayaking course] was very well run… They were supportive and encouraging for all the students and did an excellent job of teaching us basic skills! “My wife and I both recently participated in the four-day San Juan kayak trip… We both had a phenomenal time and were extremely impressed by our guide’s competence, knowledge and expertise. It was quite obvious that every aspect of the trip was meticulously planned and considered.”

Head to the water with JBLM Go on a wild whitewater adventure with expert guides By Patti Jeffrey
While scuba dives are a tourist attraction in the tropics, they’re also a main part of Pacific Northwest culture. Puget Sound waters are rated among the best for dives in the United States. If you’re intrigued to see what’s below, you have exclusive access to a unique scuba dive school right here at JBLM. Consistently receiving a five-star rating from the Professional Association of Diving Instructors, the Northwest Adventure Center is the only scuba dive center that belongs to the Department of Defense. Read more about the PADI philosophy at right. Classes cost about a third of what the rest of the region has to offer in scuba dive training, and the dive center only takes ID cardholders as students. Scuba classes are so popular at the dive center that they typically fill up months in advance; more than 400 students a year are certified.
Waiting to exhale? In the beginner-level course, scuba instructors teach classroom basics to students, then let the students get used to scuba equipment in an indoor pool. “The impulse is to hold your breath when you submerge for the first time,” says Israel Ortiz, scuba program manager. “We help you overcome that urge and teach you to relax and get used to breathing easily underwater.” After students complete the week-long evening classes, they are introduced to the Puget Sound on four dives over a

weekend. In the 10- to 20-foot dives, an instructor takes the students to see underwater life, such as bottom fish, eels, starfish, sea anemones, octopi and harbor seals. “They get really excited to be out in the Puget Sound,” Ortiz says. Once students pass dive certification, they can take their certification anywhere in the world throughout their lives. Certified students also have the opportunity to participate in weekly social dives, boat dives or dive trips. One bit of advice from Ortiz: If you find that you like regular diving — twice a month or more — try to take the rescue diving course to be more confident when diving in different scuba groups.
PADI divers carry the most respected and sought after scuba diving credentials in the world. No matter where you choose to dive, your PADI certification card will be recognized and accepted. Education: Under the guidance of your professional PADI Instructor, you gain confidence while mastering important safety concepts and skills. PADI Instructors are trained and held to diving’s highest standards, backed up by a solid, proactive quality management system. Performance-Based Learning: You progress at your own pace as you demonstrate mastery of specific performance requirements. Educational Materials: Credentialed instructional designers use state-of-the-art technology and learning theories to create PADI materials with you, the student diver, in mind. Independent study materials, available in a variety of media allow you to learn in a way that works for you. Educational Standards: All PADI programs, from entry-level through instructor training, fall under strict educational standards monitored worldwide for consistency and quality. Continuing Diver Education: The fun and enjoyment of being a confident scuba diver is fueled by continuing to improve your scuba skills. Each PADI course builds on the previous one, teaching you skills and techniques when you’re ready to learn them. PADI specialty courses let you explore specific dive interests. Professional-level courses let you live the scuba diving lifestyle by becoming a divemaster or scuba instructor. College Credit and Vocational Training: You may be able to earn college credit for certain PADI courses, or receive vocational training recognition toward national certificates.
Who can take courses? DOD ID cardholders ages 15 and older can sign up for classes. A maximum of eight students are allowed for each course. Basic open-water classes cost $240, including a book and rental gear. Other classes include deep-water diving (more than 60 ft.), rescue, advanced, navigation, refresher and courses that train students to become master divers and instructors. Divers who wish to hunt underwater (for ling cod or shellfish, for example) need a fishing and/or shellfish license along with their certification. Meet Big Al at Soldiers Field House
Alan Johnson, also known as “Big Al,” is dubbed the smiling face of Soldiers Field House, coming to work with a pep in his step and a smile on his face every day. Serving the JBLM community for more than 30 years, he’s an instrumental part of the Family & MWR team. Al started his career at the MWR Recycling Center in 1986. “Working on the installation is the best,” states Johnson. “I love working with the Soldiers, talking to the retirees and making everyone proud of the work I do.” The enthusiasm Al had when he first stepped on the job hasn’t changed over the decades. He’s known as a team player who’s quick to roll up his sleeves and lend a helping hand. “Big Al is an instrumental asset to our facility,” states Gregory Hopper, Soldiers Field House Assistant Manager. “Beyond the work he performs around the facility, he brings a smile to everyone’s face with his happy demeanor and great attitude.” It’s rare to find someone who loves their job as much as Al, and he plans on working for Family & MWR for many years to come. “Being able to work on JBLM and coming to work every day is the best feeling,” says Johnson. Next time you’re at Soldiers Field House, look for the smiling face and say hello to Big Al.

Congrats to JBLM youth Nyah Hall for earning title of ‘Washington Military Youth of the Year!’ Nyah Hall, member of the Hillside Youth Center and Clover Park High School sophomore, won the title of 2017–2018 Washington State Military Youth of the Year! This summer, she’ll compete to become the Pacific Region Military Youth of the Year with military youth from installations across the Pacific region. “Nyah’s made us all so proud!” says Joycelyn Key from Hillside Youth Center. “She did an incredible job representing JBLM at the Washington state competition, and I have no doubt she will do the same at the regional level.” The Youth of the Year title is a prestigious honor presented in recognition of leadership, service, academic excellence and dedication to a healthy lifestyle. The program honors awe-inspiring young people on the path to great futures and encourages youth to lead, succeed and inspire. “I’m honored to represent Joint Base Lewis-McChord as Washington State’s Military Youth of the Year,” says Nyah, daughter to an active duty Air Force father at McChord Field CYS trainer mother. “My Boys and Girls Club of America-affiliated youth center has been a safe haven for me and other military youth. It’s shaped me into the flamboyant, responsible and confident young women that I am today. My life has been greatly impacted by the wonderful programs offered at Hillside Youth Center such as Smart Girls, Keystone, Money Matters, Power Hour and Career Launch. I know that I have the skills necessary to have a successful life.” Before being awarded the title, Nyah spent two days in Seattle participating in exciting activities, getting to know her fellow Washington state YOYs and preparing for the competition. She also traveled to Olympia to meet Governor Jay Inslee and other legislative officials in Olympia, met Bobby Wagner at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center and went to the Space Needle for speech practice. Nyah and the other youth candidates for Washington Youth of the Year met the judges — representatives from Google, Qualcomm, KeyBank, local business professionals and BGCA alumni — before giving speeches and completing four 15-minute interviews. After being judged on essays, speech performance, interviews and overall quality of their application, Nyah was announced as the Washington State’s Military Youth of the Year! “From the first day I met Nyah five years ago, I knew there was something special about her,” Joycelyn says. “She just radiates positivity and has a charming personality and a very infectious laugh. She’s always helpful, acts as a role model for her peers and is an all-around amazing youth. It’s been such a joy watching Nyah transform from a shy, giggly girl to a confident, poised young woman.” We’re extremely proud of Nyah’s accomplishments and can’t wait for her to represent JBLM and Washington’s other military installations at regionals! About Boys & Girls Clubs in Washington The Boys & Girls Clubs of Washington exist to inspire and enable all young people to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens. It focuses on five core program areas: character and leadership development, education and career development, health and life skills, the arts and sports/fitness/recreation. Currently, more than 75,000 Washington state youth in grades K–12 are served through annual membership and more than 63,000 youth through community outreach. There are programs currently offered at 144 separate locations, including Clubhouses, native lands, public housing, schools and community centers.

Resiliency tip of the month TEND TO YOUR RELATIONSHIP — We’ve made it through the April showers, and now it’s time for the first rays of sunshine and those lovely May flowers! Did you know, that just like a flower garden, relationships need rain, sunshine and attention, too? One way to spread some “sunshine” is to let your spouse know that you appreciate the love, care and uniqueness they bring to your garden. Try leaving little notes of affection or thanks for your spouse to find around the house or car: “You make me so happy.” “What a GREAT dad you are!” “You’re my best friend,” “I miss you when I’m away.” At the FOCUS program, we have a ton of ideas of how to show love, gratitude and support for each other in a fun and engaging atmosphere. Don’t just get by, get stronger! Give FOCUS a call for more information. FOCUS is located at 2013B N. 3rd St. (at Pendleton Avenue) in Room 331.
