What MWR means to me Our resolve at MWR is to improve your morale, look out for your welfare and give you ways to recreate. Each month, we’re looking at what this means to people who participate in MWR activities and events.
KAWEKA STONEY works for the Outdoor Recreation program as a recreation assistant. He specializes in leading outdoor photography and multi-day trips and treks.

Throughout my 22 years in the military, I utilized the many different programs offered by MWR, from checking out books in the library to catching a movie in the post theater. I always enjoyed the fact that there was something to do no matter where I was stationed. After my retirement from the Army, I started my new job as a recreation assistant with the Outdoor Recreation program at JBLM. This is truly a fantastic job because we get to take the military community on amazing trips throughout the Pacific Northwest, but also, we're able to provide specialized coping outlets to Service members. One such program that Outdoor Recreation is the proponent for is Warrior Adventure Quest, an Army training tool designed to introduce activities that serve as alternates to aberrant behaviors often associated with accidents involving recently redeployed Soldiers. WAQ combines a high-adventure activity, such as rafting or rock climbing, with a leader-led after-action debrief to help Service members move on after deployments. In addition, Outdoor Recreation provides recreational program support for at-risk Service members in the Armed Forces Substance Abuse Program and briefings on recreational activities for Service members in the Traumatic Brain Injury program. At the heart of what MWR means to me is a series of programs and support for military members, Families, retirees and civilians that not only provide relaxation and recreation but also resiliency.

Experience Armed Forces Day By Patti Jeffrey eats of hilariously screaming youngsters rotate through the air at dizzying speeds on carnival rides. Savory smells of sizzling, juicy burgers, hot dogs and other favorites lure customers to line up at fair-food trailers. Kids smile and pose for their parents’ and friends’ photos in front of imposing military vehicles while waiting for their turn to climb aboard. The variety of sights, sounds and smells tugs at our emotions at the annual Armed Forces Day at JBLM — being celebrated Saturday, May 19 at McChord Field. Military buffs look forward to learning about wartime artifacts, reveling in camaraderie, sharing stories and teaching their youngsters about living history. Families gather to entertain their youngsters, visit with friends, enjoy the day and celebrate their place in the military community. Veterans of wars and conflicts visit to reminisce, honor their comrades and perhaps share parts of their stories, still fresh in their minds. All are there to honor our Service members who continue to carry on the legacy and promise of our hard-won freedoms.

“Armed Forces Day is a unique opportunity for our Service members, Families and the local community to celebrate who we are and what we do. It’s a great time to come out, have fun and see the equipment and aircraft that JBLM deploys around the world.” – Lt. Col. M. Ben McKenzie, Commander, 627th Force Support Squadron; Deputy Director, DPFR & DFMWR
What is Armed Forces Day? Back in 1949, the separate branches of our military were unified under one entity — the newly established Department of Defense. A single-day observance of all five military branches was announced by the Secretary of Defense. We celebrate Armed Forces Day to thank our military members for their service to our country. In an excerpt from the Presidential Proclamation of Feb. 27, 1950, President Harry S. Truman stated: “Armed Forces Day, Saturday, May 20, 1950, marks the first combined demonstration by America’s defense team of its progress, under the National Security Act, towards the goal of readiness for any eventuality. It is the first parade of preparedness by the unified forces of our land, sea and air defense.” It’s still true today.
JBLM continues annual tradition with a new location Armed Forces Day is a chance to showcase military history and the current mission of JBLM, while reaching out to both educate and entertain the surrounding communities. JBLM hosts its celebration yearly, drawing approximately 20,000 participants from around the region. This year will mark the first time Armed Forces Day is being held at McChord Field. An official Volksmarch ushers in the day, starting at 9 a.m. and continuing throughout the day. Two routes, a 5K and a 10K, take you around McChord Airfield, Holiday Park and the fishing pond. With the change in locale comes more variety in static displays. Participants will be able to tour C-17s, a C-130, AH-64 Apache and UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters, the historic military air museum aircraft at Heritage Hill, Strkyers, an M777 Howitzer and other military medical, tactical, combat engineering, ordnance disposal and rocket launcher vehicles and displays. “Armed Forces Day is a unique opportunity for our Service members, Families and the local community to celebrate who we are and what we do. Climb aboard for whitewater rafting season By Alisha Bator nter the season of whitewater — the season in Washington that brings boat fanatics from near and far, adjusting their frames, organizing new dry bags and prepping for our rivers to surge. The snow has been melting and is starting its course through the mountains, continuing to carve powerful, winding shapes into the landscape. Boaters have been watching the water levels and readying themselves for the months of charging through the rapid walls and surfing the waves pouring through the rocky river beds.

Rushing waters call for adventures Rivers are powerful forces of nature that one must never underestimate. They are the blood of the earth, coursing through its veins to nourish and heal. Many humans are innately drawn to the water, feeling a sense of place in the world when they are near it. Now, try to be on it — navigating through the currents, steering your boat and charging over the massive water features that are colliding with the rocks beneath you. To boat a river is to feel both in control and out of it at the same time, for the water will never stop moving and has the final say — we just have to make smart choices to enjoy the incredible playground it provides. This area boasts hundreds of glacial-fed rivers that kayakers, paddleboarders and rafters chase year-round, but as it starts to change into the summer season, the water will continue to rise, and the rapids will go from small and technical to towering and fast. That’s where we come in! As a group of adrenaline junkies, we scour the world to find adventures that fuel our fire — and then we bring them to you.
Where to find your river adventure Try your hand at our beloved Wenatchee River that winds you on a playful and diverse route through the Washington apple orchards and rolling hills at the edge of the Cascades, or maybe the gentle terrain of the Nisqually on some paddleboards. Then there are the mighty Skykomish and
White Salmon rivers, complete with waterfalls, giant boulders, trenched-out walls and lush, green landscapes for some of our bigger thrillseekers. Finally, spend five days exploring the massive canyon of the Owyhee River in Oregon. This trip will have you camping on sandy shores at the base of 300-foot walls, cooking meals while the sun sets over the sparkling water and waking up to it warming up your tent after it has made its slow crawl down the valley. These are experiences you won’t want to miss! For a descriptive list and costs of our whitewater rafting trips and the five-day Owyhee River rafting trip, visit JBLMmwrRegistration.com. FOCUS Youth
JBLM’s youth programs contribute to bright futures By Charissa Lizama illside Youth Center/Teen Zone is proud to present Katie Wilton as the Boys & Girls Clubs of Washington State's Military Youth of the Year award winner. Katie says, “The opportunities and experiences my club has provided me are invaluable. It is a fact that I would not be who I am today if I had never discovered my youth center. Attending my youth center has opened my eyes to the smaller things in life, and taught me to appreciate all the opportunities I have been provided in life and the people I have met.” Katie received a $5,000 scholarship, along with a laptop computer. She's now going on to the regional-level competition. Charissa Lizama, Hillside Youth Center/Teen Zone assistant director, says, “I'm ecstatic about Katie winning — it was a great experience for her. I have to say that to hear each youth’s story makes me feel proud of them and honored to be part of this BGCA Youth of the Year event.”

How Youth of the Year is chosen The Youth of the Year program is designed to promote and recognize service to the club and community, academic performance and contributions to Family. Military youth at JBLM can work toward applying for Military Youth of the Year. Youth in grades 6–12 must be a member for at least one year at Hillside Youth Center/Teen Zone, affiliated with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America. (Parents can sign up their youth for free at Parent Central Services or at Hillside.) Hillside structures programs that involve leadership clubs, Career Launch, SMART Girls, Passport to Manhood, fine arts and many more fun activities. Qualifying youth need to be involved in club programs and activities that provide them with peer-to-peer social and leadership skills. For more information on youth programs and activities or how to join, call Hillside at 253-967-4441.

FOCUS Tip of the Month Manage your superpowers Named after the Greek fertility goddess, Maia, May is the month to honor and celebrate the joys and challenges of motherhood. However, motherhood (and parenting) isn’t all May flowers — sometimes moms need new strategies to manage their superpowers at the end of the day. At the FOCUS program, we teach moms (and dads, too!) fun and useful skills to energize the heart and to make time for muchneeded self-care. FOCUS is at 2013B N. 3rd St. (at Pendleton Avenue), Room 331. For more information, call 253-966-6390 or email JBLM@focusproject. org. Also visit focusproject.org or fb.com/FOCUSresiliencytraining.

EAP Tip of the Month Wellness & increased physical activity Did you know that regular physical activity increases your chances of living a longer, healthier life? It also reduces your stress, risk for high blood pressure, heart disease and some types of cancer. Yet, most people don’t get the recommended amount of physical activity. During National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, let’s consider moving toward action. The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recommend that adults: • Aim for two hours and 30 minutes of moderate aerobic activity each week. Moderate activity includes walking fast, dancing, swimming and raking leaves. • Do muscle-strengthening activities — like lifting weights or using exercise bands — at
least two days a week. • Physical activity is for everyone. No matter what shape you’re in, you can find activities that work for you and your individual needs. The JBLM Army Wellness Center is at 2022 Liggett Ave. (at Division) and is a free resource available to DOD ID card holders. Skilled staff help individuals build and sustain good health. Some of the services offered are: • Health assessment review. • Physical fitness. • Healthy nutrition. • Stress management. • General wellness education. To learn more about this topic or seek support, stop by to see the EAP Team at 2008B N. 3rd (at Pendleton Avenue), Room 114 or call 253-732-2214.

Joint library programs StoryWalk at the Library Join Book Patch and McChord libraries as we celebrate Strong B.A.N.D.S. (details on page 22) with StoryWalk®. StoryWalk combines two of our favorite activities — reading and taking a walk. Each StoryWalk will begin outside each library. Simply follow along the trail reading the pages of some of our favorite books at each stop along the way.
