Why not your car loan? If you think buying a locally raised rump roast makes a difference, imagine how a bigger purchase, like a local car loan, supports the community. Right now, Harborstone Credit Union has barn loads of money to lend to people who not only want to drive a new car but drive the local economy too. Who could possibly have a beef with that?

on’t

be caught in the cold when it comes to vehicle safety this winter. The seasoned experts at your Auto Centers at Lewis Main and McChord are ready to help you get your vehicle in good shape for cold weather. At the McChord Auto Center, Andy Duenas and Thomas Graves are more than willing to answer any of your questions. This month, they’re sharing how you can winterize your vehicle and be prepared for winter travel. It’s critical to check your fluids no matter what season it is. Make sure your vehicle has adequate antifreeze, even if it’s not being used. Your engine block is in danger of freezing and cracking (an expensive repair) without antifreeze to protect it. Use all-season oil, which won’t get thick in colder temperatures. Most new cars use 5W/20 or 5W/30. Check to see if your windshield washer is formulated for winter temperatures. Even window-washing solutions have some antifreeze to prevent your windshield from icing up. Remember to check your transmission and brake fluid levels before you go on any trip. Check your wiper blades to see if they are proper for winter use. Some blades can freeze and become rigid rather than remain flexible. Make certain your tire pressure is adjusted for cold weather. Tire pressures are naturally higher in warm tempera-

tures and lower in cold temperatures. Underinflated tires wear out more quickly. Also check your spare tire for proper air pressure and ensure that you have a jack and tools needed to change the tire in case of a flat. Speaking of tires, buy good all-season tires that wear well in both summer and winter. Get your battery and battery cables serviced. You wouldn’t want to get stuck somewhere in freezing weather for any length of time. Carry an organizer in your vehicle with these essentials: de-icing fluid, quart of oil, quart of transmission fluid, jug of 50/50 mix of antifreeze, bottle of brake fluid, flares, paper towels, portable air pump and a blanket. If you ever need help, you’ll have the supplies on hand to quickly get your vehicle back on the road.

Need somewhere warm and dry to winterize your car? Rent a stall at one of your Auto Centers! For a small fee, you can rent bays and lifts that vary according to function at each location. For instance, you can reserve a driveon lift for changing oil easily, arm lifts for changing and rotating tires and rotary lifts for better access. Each stall has its own tool bay. For more information or a reservation, call the Lewis Main Auto Center

at 253-967-3728 or the McChord Auto Center at 253-982-7226.

Learn how to perform car care Changing your own oil and fluids and lubing your vehicle saves you a lot of money — learn how at your Auto Centers. The McChord Auto Center even has Lube and Oil Change and Car Check-Up classes; just call to make an appointment! Now that your vehicle is prepped for winter, arm yourself with the driving tips on page 21.

Get a FREE 16-point inspection and oil change Is your spouse deployed and you’re wondering when to get an oil change, lube or fluid refill on your vehicle? Make an appointment with the McChord Field Auto Center for a free 16-point inspection. All you need is a copy of your spouses’ orders when you arrive for your appointment. For a free oil change, make an appointment with the Lewis Main Auto Center. You’ll need to provide your own oil and oil filter. For your free inspection, call 253-982-7226 to make an appointment Wednesday through Saturday. For a free oil change, call 253-967-3728 for an appointment Wednesday through Sunday.

Bring in your new windshield wiper blades and we’ll install them for FREE during November. JBLMmwr.com

Turn your than By Kimberly Rowe

T

he holidays are a time of joy and happiness, spent with friends and family. As this year’s holiday season approaches, we often reflect on our lives and count our blessings. A Thanksgiving tradition in my family — and I’m sure many of yours — is to share what we’re thankful for each year. As we sit around the table, we list the reasons why we’re so blessed — family, friends, health, happiness. Even as life throws us curve balls (cancer, deployments, daily stresses), there are still so many reasons to be thankful. I’m challenging myself and everyone in my family this year to something new: find a reason you’re thankful and share it with others in the community. Turn your thanks into giving. You may be one of the many people

16

Give back to the community in which we all live and work. Volunteer your time and talents. who already finds time in your busy schedule to volunteer during the holidays (and the rest of the year). JBLM couldn’t run the quality programs and services available without the help of generous volunteers from the community who donate thousands of hours each year to make a difference. In 2010 alone, volunteers contributed 145,457 hours at JBLM organizations. The 2011 total is more than 63,000 and growing daily. Volunteers make a better tomorrow today! Learn and develop new skills, network with other professionals and create opportunities for yourself while making a difference in your com-

munity. JBLM has a host of volunteer organizations offering many exciting opportunities. See the box at right for a list of some of the JBLM organizations in need of volunteers. To learn more about volunteering and find out about organizations in need of volunteers, call the Volunteer Corps Program manager at 253-967-2324. Located in the Family Resource Center, Bldg. 9496 at Lewis Main, the volunteer program manager will assist you in finding a place to share your time and talent. The manager also tracks volunteers, monthly hours and hosts the annual base-wide recognition ceremony.

It’s  time  to get  muddy! Take to the trails and conquer the hills at JBLM’s Off-Road Vehicle Park. By Kimberly Rowe

Last month, I was invited to spend a few hours on an ATV with the Outdoor Recreation Program. The thrill of blazing down the trails with my coworkers was awesome. We completed a certification course, which taught everything from getting familiar with the ATV to basic maneuvers. Then we hit the trails at the ORV Park. After a trip or two around the park, I shifted out of second gear, which tops out at 21 mph, and gained a little confidence. I channeled my tough side to make my husband proud. When it was time to park the ATV for the afternoon, I wanted to keep riding. Next time, maybe I’ll shift into fourth.

B

lazing down the trails on an ATV is awesome! Before you go out to the Off-Road Vehicle Park on the outskirts of Lewis Main, consider taking a safety introduction course. While it’s not required, it’s very informative and prepares you to face the obstacles you’ll find in the ORV Park or other locations you may ride. Show up to class prepared: wear long sleeves, long pants, boots (must cover and support your ankle) and gloves. If you have your own DOT-certified helmet, feel free to bring it to the course. The course is a mixture of classroom learning (a covered area at the practice

course) and hands-on training that’ll get you prepared and confident to hit the great outdoors on four fast wheels. In the course, you’ll start by getting familiar with the ATV you’ll be riding. For example, there are two buttons for shifting and three brakes. It’s a four-step process to start: turn the key, flip the ignition switch, ensure the ATV is in neutral and push the ignition button to start. You’ll learn about TREAD and SIPDE, how to make safe turns, maneuver over obstacles and traverse hills. You’ll make U-turns, sudden stops and sharp turns with the guidance of a certified instructor. “I would definitely recommend the

course to anyone who is interested in ATVing, at any skill level. The instructors were experienced, patient and provided great feedback. This was truly an incredible experience!” said Kimmy Grant. At the completion of the training in the classroom and on the instructional course, you’ll be treated to a trail ride that’s sure to leave you wanting to return to the ORV Park. Plus, you’ll have earned your certification card from the ATV Safety Institute. The ORV Park is located outside the Scout’s Out Gate at Lewis Main. All visitors must have a park pass and are required to sign in with the Northwest

Joint Base Lewis-McChord Focus • November 2011

Directions to the JBLM ORV Park The park is located about a mile outside of Scouts Out gate on 2nd Division Range Rd. The gravel parking lot on the left is a staging area for the park. The Scout Outs gate is open only on Saturday & Sunday, but the ORV can be accessed through East Gate Rd. From East Gate, make the first right and follow the road to a fork. Stay right and continue until the staging area comes up on right.

Adventure Center, Bldg. 8050 NCO Beach Rd. at Lewis North, 253-967-6263, before visiting. It’s for the safety of the riders and it could save you a trip; the park is only open when there’s no activity on the nearby ranges, so call before you go to ensure it’s open. Passes for ATV and dirt bike owners to use the park are just $15 for a day or $75 for a year — a great option for savings if you plan to visit the park more than five times a year. After watching a mandatory safety video, riders will receive their ORV passes. At the ORV Park, only ATVs and dirt bikes are permitted. No vehicles are al-

lowed. Don’t risk it; leave your Jeep or truck in the staging area and head out on an ATV or dirt bike. Need a ride? ATVs are available for rent at the Skeet Range, located near the ORV Park in Bldg. 3969. Rental includes ATV with gas, helmet and optional coveralls. Riders are responsible for all other safety equipment and must comply with park rules. For availability, call 253-967-7056. If you want to explore the great outdoors from the seat of your ATV, check with the NAC for options or search online. Remember to get permission before you ride on private property. Before you

head out of state to ride, be sure to check local laws. Oregon has different laws than Washington, for example, and you want to ensure you’re riding safely and legally no matter where you go. Quick tips for beginning riders: • Ride within your abilities. • Don’t be afraid to stand up. Leaning forward can help you guide your ATV safely to the top of a hill (moving your center of gravity backward helps when going down hills). • Leave a map or location details with a friend before you go riding — and never ride alone. Feelin’ good

Have your cake   without gaining weight!

With all the events you’ll be attending, extra calories can add up when holiday celebrations revolve around food. With a few tips from a registered dietician at JBLM, you can eat healthy this holiday season. By Anna Betancourt, M.S.

The holidays are the best of times — reuniting with family, traveling and generally changing daily routines and behaviors. We look forward to favorite foods and traditional cakes, pies and desserts, and our regular eating pattern and meal routines are interrupted. There are many invitations and celebrations involving food, and if you haven’t compensated with extra exercise and physical activity, the result from the extra holiday treats is weight gain. This holiday season, be prepared to enjoy all the activities and family events without dreading the scale at the end of it all. Here are some simple strategies to prepare meals and desserts by reducing fats, sugars and overall calories. Traditional holiday dishes made

healthy The start of the holiday season is Thanksgiving. You can still make your traditional Thanksgiving dinner — with a few adjustments, the dishes can be made lower in calories and more nutritious. Desserts can be prepared with less sugar, and/or less butter or oil, without changing its integrity, flavor or appearance. There are lower sugar and lower fat versions of many

and eat it, too … desserts like cheesecake and pumpkin pie. Pay attention to the recipe and what amounts of sugar it requires. When putting final touches on cake, try a fruit sauce such as blueberries in place of a frosting which is made with sugar and fat. For gravy, prepare a broth the day before with onions, garlic and carrots and the browned turkey neck. Add fresh dill and a sprig of sage, then refrigerate it and skim the fat when you’re ready to make gravy. It’ll be a tasty broth and when you reduce the amount of pan drippings, you have a lower-fat version. If you like premade gravy look for a low fat option. Include more color on your plate Add red fruits and vegetables to your plate for an instant vitamin boost. Dice cooked beets and dried cranberries and add them to the stuffing. This dramatically increases the vitamin A and fiber content. Sweet potatoes are another excellent source of Vitamin A, and they can be baked, or boiled and served with a little brown sugar and sprinkled cinnamon, instead of marshmallows and a stick of butter. Be creative with vegetables. For example, a grilled vegetable medley looks pretty and provides vitamins, minerals, fiber and color to your plate. Vegetable dips are always a favorite, In place of ranch dressing, create a healthier version with low-fat yogurt blended with an herb mix.

Replace this for that When recipes require cheeses and white sauces, use low-fat cheeses and dairy products, which can be an excellent substitute without altering the flavor. Quick tips to help keep the holiday weight gain away On the day of the celebration, eat something early in the day such as fruits and wholegrain crackers, in order avoid feeling too hungry when you sit down to the big meal. To avoid excessive caloric intake, learn to recognize when you’ve eaten enough. You won’t insult the host or hostess if you don’t have seconds, but a good compliment goes a long way. Don’t forget that cocktails pack a caloric punch. Choose the smallest wine glass and use a strategy of sampling and spacing your drinks, which will have you consuming fewer calories and feeling clearheaded. Exercising and physical activity will improve your chances of not gaining weight; the holiday season is a time to be more conscientious about your workout. Invite everyone for a walk after dinner, and make it a good time to catch up. For more information and additional help with healthy eating options, call 253-982-0531. Volunteering benefits are priceless By Ryki Carlson, JBLM Financial Counselor

W

ith the current economy, many people are looking for work or changing careers. Volunteering offers a great opportunity to acquire new skills and training without additional costs. If you’re considering a job change, take time to volunteer in a position similar to your new career choice. Many people volunteer in response to a natural disaster or to help those less fortunate. Although volunteers aren’t paid, giving back to the community offers its own rewards: • Volunteering looks good on college applications — colleges like to see students who demonstrate an investment in both an organization and a community.

ASK THE MONEY EXPERTS

• Volunteering gives recent high school and college graduates — who may have little or no job experience — opportunities to develop occupational and people skills. The experience, skills and work performed give

you additional tools to add to your résumé or scholarship packages. • Additionally, it gives insight to fields of interest while making friends and business contacts. This exposure can help focus goals and opens opportunities as well. Regardless of your motivation to volunteer, these opportunities can help you reach your goals. There are many online databases available. To find the fit that’s right for you, search volunteer opportunities or call the Installation Volunteer Coordinator at 253-967-2324 to find a way to volunteer your time and talents at JBLM. Turn back to page 16 for ideas for volunteering during the holidays. The ACS Financial Readiness Office at Waller Hall (Lewis Main) is offering financial counseling on Saturdays, Nov. 5, Dec. 3 and Jan. 7, 10 a.m.–2 p.m. For more information and a schedule of upcoming free seminars, visit JBLMmwr.com.

Q: Why should I buy renter’s insurance?

A:

Renter’s insurance is something every renter should include in their budget. Whether you live in the barracks, an apartment or a rental home, it’ll protect you from losses such as theft and fire. Premiums are usually inexpensive for the vast amount of coverage provided. Policies will help you replace the items that are damaged or stolen, as well as cover medical expenses if someone’s hurt inside your residence. It’s important to get the correct coverage and to have an inventory of all of your items. Experts recommend making a list of items including values and serial numbers. Photograph or videotape each room, ensuring all items of value are clearly visible. When making major purchases, keep receipts and store documentation in a fireproof box, on a digital file with online access or in a safety deposit box. This will ensure your proof of valuables is accessible in the event of a fire or natural disaster. Having renter’s insurance doesn’t just cover your belongings — it provides you additional financial security.
