GAIT ANALYSIS CLINIC
Become a better, faster runner By Christina Kurty, JBLM Sports Specialist
A Sports Specialist and Certified Kinesio Tape Practitioner, Kurty has been working at JBLM since December 2008. Her fascination with biomechanics started when she researched her own foot and knee pain, and she’s specialized in the foot and ankle for nearly 10 years. Kurty works at Lewis Main’s Jensen Family Health & Fitness Center at the Gait Analysis Clinic.
G
Gait is described as a “particular way or manner of moving on foot.” In the military, the way and manner you move at home station, in the field or in a combat zone affects your ability to maintain your physical readiness. Working with military, dependents, retirees and DoD civilians for more than 20 years, Teresa Bruder, RN, PhD, Director of the Health Promotion and Wellness Service, has created and managed programs to maintain and increase readiness and to decrease injuries sustained by service members— injuries potentially making them non-deployable. Some of these programs include the Gait Analysis Clinic, which opened in 2008, and the Microfit Clinic at Jensen Family Health and Fitness Center. Service members, dependents and ID card holders experiencing difficulty running or passing the Army Physical Fitness Test or those who have repeatedly experienced injuries resulting from physical training are encouraged to visit the Gait Analysis Clinic. The main focus is health education instruction, hands-on training, videotaping an individual’s run/walk and then retraining them to run or walk

How does the process work? • If a medical clearance is needed prior to a gait analysis, a client will obtain a medical release from either their physician, physical therapist, podiatrist or sports physician. • The client receives a shoe and postural assessment, and then a gait analysis is conducted. • Once the gait analysis is completed, videos are reviewed with the client. Discrepancies or deficiencies are noted and individual education and instruction is given with physical fitness suggestions to improve gait, APFT time and avoid future injuries. If you would like to schedule an appointment for a gait analysis, call 253-732-6145.

Enjoy a holiday feast for less
Spend & stress less to enjoy this festive time of year
A
By Ryki Carlson, JBLM Financial Counselor
As the holidays quickly approach, it’s more important than ever to budget the expenses that go along with the holidays. This time of year, the added costs of a huge meal for your family and friends can be intimidating. Although we want to entertain our family and friends, we need to ensure that we can feed our household for the remaining days of the month. When discussing your monthly budget with your spouse, talk about the upcoming holiday meals. Incorporating the extra food expense into your monthly budget will help avoid financial stress later. In planning your holiday meal, take the time to figure out how many people are coming to dinner. If finances are tight, consider providing the main course while asking everyone to bring a side dish. This gives everyone a chance to contribute and share their favorite holiday recipe. Just ensure you get a list from everyone so you don’t have five dishes of green bean casserole. Once you figure out how many guests are coming, consult a perfect portion calculator to help you purchase the right amount of meat. If you are looking for a turkey calculator visit butterball.com and for other meats check out recipetips.com. Since the main course is usually the most expensive, it is important to accurately assess how much you will need. If you make some of the side dishes, consider using fresh fruits and vegetables in season, since these are the most economical. Fall fruits and
26
vegetables include acorn and butternut squash, apples, broccoli, oranges, parsnips, pears, pomegranates, carrots, celery, potatoes and sweet potatoes. Look through your favorite cookbook or search online for simple holiday recipes. The standard rule is the fewer ingredients listed on the recipe, the less costly the dish. It is important not to purchase specialty items for a recipe that you will only use once. Remember that holiday meals are a time to enjoy with your family and friends. With a little planning it can also be financially stress-free.
