HOW TO

GREEN your holiday

• After the holidays, bring your tree (real or artificial) to the JBLM Recycling Centers. Please remove all tinsel, lights and flocking. Bring in your lights, too — just make sure they’re off the tree. • Are you deep frying a turkey? Take your used cooking oil to the Lewis Main or McChord Field Recycling Centers. • Use LED lights to decorate. They use 80–90% less energy and last so much longer! • Reusable bags aren’t just for groceries — bring them with you for your holiday gift shopping. • Check out local farmers markets for your holiday dinner ingredients. • Buy from local, small businesses as much as possible, keeping money in your local community. • Use fabric to wrap your presents. You can use it year after year, saving money and paper! The Lewis Main Recycling Center will be closed Nov. 1-4 due to fall cleanup. Please use the McChord Field Recycling Center during this time. Win prizes with Recycling Trivia Tuesdays During the month of November, win prizes every Tuesday by answering recycling trivia questions on the Sustainable JBLM Facebook page. Wrong answers have a chance at winning, too!

Trees for Troops: Delivering the spirit of Christmas to military Families — one Christmas tree at a time. Trees for Troops is coming back to JBLM this holiday season! Stay tuned to JBLMmwr.com and fb.com/JBLMmwr for details.

What is Trees for Troops? For many years, Christmas tree growers have been providing free trees for charitable purposes. In the 1990s, some organized efforts started through which trees were given to National Guard units and other military personnel who were deployed in peacekeeping efforts in Kosovo and other regions of the world. In 2005, the National Christmas Tree Association developed the Christmas SPIRIT Foundation as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization to advance the spirit of Christmas year-round. The foundation quickly developed plans for a national Trees for Troops program to unify the individual programs of tree growers andNovember state Christmas tree associations. The Grow! program is for parents with children ages 5–8 and teaches parenting skills to strengthen your connection with your child and empower you with more skills to help him grow healthy and happy! Learn: • Techniques for disciplining calmly and in a way that strengthens your relationship with your child. • Tactics for establishing routines and rules that can provide structure and safety and also make managing your home easier (i.e., bedtime rituals, screen time limits, school engagement, Family meals and household responsibilities). • Strategies for reducing the stress that all busy parents experience. • Techniques for teaching your child coping skills. • Ways to communicate with your child that motivate desirable behaviors and build competency and confidence. • Strategies for enhancing healthy feeding, eating and physical activity habits. Classes run five weeks, and there is no cost to attend. Childcare is included. If you missed the registration cut-off for the Nov. 15 class series, join us for the next session, which starts Tuesday, Jan. 3 (1–2:30 p.m.).
