Building strong minds, strong bodies at JBLM In the military, your physical strength is very important, but that’s not the only part of your life that needs focus. With the Comprehensive Service Member and Family Fitness Program, you can ensure you are strong and resilient by focusing on the five dimensions of strength: emotional, social, spiritual, Family and physical well-being. The program isn’t just here at JBLM, but we’ve highlighted the programs and services available to you here in each of the five dimensions. From financial readiness and deployment support and whether you’re moving to a new installation or on to a second career, you’ll find the resources you need listed in our special Strong Minds Strong Bodies section beginning on page 16. This issue has more great information — find quality ways to spend time with your young ones while their older siblings are at school (page 12), sports information (page 14 for youth; 26 for adult fitness) and special event information — like the Texas Hold ‘Em and the Fall Flea Market — beginning on page 6. After you’ve visited one of our facilities or attended a special event, take a few minutes to share your thoughts with me at http://ice.disa.mil. Sincerely, William E. f you’ve enjoyed a made-to-order coffee drink from Battle Bean at Lewis Main or Lewis North, or from Café Lancelatte at McChord Field — then you know you’ve experienced a unique roast. What is Battle Bean and what makes it so different? The beans are freshly roasted right here at Joint Base Lewis-McChord for a smooth, light flavor. The process takes place in the Warrior Zone’s Battle Bean coffee shop and roastery.
Fresh roast means fresh flavor Curtis Black, Battle Bean’s “roast master” for more than 11 years, is a guy who thrives on coffee. He has succeeded in developing a roast quite different from the other coffees sold on base. He describes it as a smooth, light roast rather than dark, oily or bitter. He says, “Roasting coffee beans is more of an art than a science. I can tell how long to roast them by the smell, the temperature and the looks. Once you get the beans the way you want, it’s easy to duplicate.” Under his watchful eye, every batch of Battle Bean is evenly roasted for the smoothest flavor in a state-ofthe-art roaster using infrared heat.
Buy Battle Bean merchandise online Did you know that you can buy freshly roasted Battle Bean coffee beans online and have them shipped directly to you? Now you can enjoy the unique Battle Bean flavors anywhere you go! Also order your choice of Battle Bean logo commuter mugs, tumblers and thermoses, plus a Battle Bean stuffed toy and Warrior Zone Zap energy drink. Visit JBLMmwr.com/coffee_battlebean to order your choice of merchandise.
Back-to-School Special Receive a free small latte with proof of college registration! Good at Battle Bean shops at AFC Arena, Stone Education Center and the Warrior Zone. No cash value. One offer per customer. Expires Sept. 30, 2012. JBLMmwr.com

JBLM Arts & Crafts Centers merge

f you’ve been to the Lewis Main Arts & Crafts Center lately, you probably know that both JBLM Arts & Crafts Centers are going through changes. During September, the Lewis Main center is moving most of its staff and equipment to the McChord Arts & Crafts Center due to a change in building use. The McChord Arts & Crafts Center’s current hours of operation will change starting Oct. 1 to coincide with Lewis’ current hours. The combined center will be open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m. at 1121 Barnes Blvd. at McChord Field. The woodshop at McChord has closed to make room for an expanded frame shop that allows do-it-yourself patrons to rent ample space while the staff works on custom orders. A new storefront at Lewis Main is being planned to allow Lewis patrons to place and pick up some types of custom orders, such as unit awards and plaques. “The Lewis Arts & Crafts Center is remaining open until our move,” says Gloria Rodgers, Arts & Crafts Centers director. “We apologize ahead of time for the inconvenience to our customers and are willing to work with you to get your orders finished without interruption in services to you.” For more information, call the Lewis Arts & Crafts Center at 253-967-5001 or the McChord Arts & Crafts Center at 253-982-6726.

O
nce the doors open at the parent and child play centers, the rooms come alive with greetings and giggles, dress-up and block-building, and quiet conversations among parents in happily relaxed settings. The two free play centers at JBLM are a great alternative to staying at home with youngsters up to age 5. Raindrops & Rainbows at Lewis North is open weekdays and Saturdays, except for a break at lunchtime. “Parents have an opportunity to get support when they come here,” says Blanca Segovia, staff member. “We have new-parent support and parentto-parent classes that meet here, too. It’s a really great alternative to preschool for developing a child’s learning and socialization skills.” Parents find play activities centered on various themes in every part of the building, such as “cooking,” science, drama, construction, animal kingdom, library and computer learning games, water and sand tubs, art, exercise and specialized classes in infant massage and music with dance. Outside, a fenced-in playground is available for energetic toddlers. CYS Services registration is encouraged but not required at Raindrops & Rainbows.
The center is located at 8197 American Lake Blvd. Call 253-966-4802 for more information. The Escape Zone at McChord Field is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 9 a.m.–noon. Two large playrooms accommodate a number of activities in every corner or at juniorsize tables. Outside, within a spacious courtyard, a huge playground awaits. The entire area is padded with a soft fall zone and partially covered for outdoor play even on rainy days. Parents can spend one-on-one quiet time in a private room off the entrance if their baby or young child needs a break. “We’ve accommodated more than 1,500 customers since January,” says Jennifer Wood, volunteer staffer at the Escape Zone. “They love it here so much that some parents come every day. It’s fulfilling its purpose — to be a place where spouses and children of deployed and active duty Families can come to meet and interact with each other.” The Escape Zone is located at 841 Fairway Rd. From the McChord Main gate, turn right onto Fairway Road and keep straight as you cross Lincoln Boulevard until the road ends at the building. For more details, call 253-982-8590 or 253-982-2695.
On our JBLM Family & MWR Facebook page, we asked parents the reasons they take their youngsters to either Raindrops & Rainbows or the Escape Zone. Heidi F. says, “We go to Raindrops & Rainbows because it rains nine months of the year and it’s an indoor play area with new-to-them toys. Plus, it’s free.” Yarii O. writes, “It’s free, my kid gets bored and I go crazy with a bored kid at home [grin].” Carolyn F. says, “It’s free!” Simone C. states, “I take my baby girl because she loves playing with other kids but doesn’t have siblings — yet. Plus, she loves the music and exercise room.” Dana G. states, “It’s a free, safe, healthy and diverse age-appropriate place for children to learn through play, especially when most of the time we have poor and rainy weather. I love that I have a bunch of things to do with my child that I could not afford. Thank you, for I’ve never had this at any other duty station and we have been in the military for 20 years.” Brittany A. notes, “I take my 2-yearold girl and 4-year-old boy and they love it! I go because it’s so close to my son’s school. I’ll take my daughter to play about an hour or so before he gets out, so it’s convenient and free and a lot of fun!” Sue S. says, “I take my younger ones during school because it’s great for the younger ones and because there’s nothing else for the little ones to do…” Katrina S. writes, “We go to get out of the house and meet other parents. Can’t beat free! Especially since its always rainy here, lol.” Chris O. says, “It’s free, safe and my kids just plain love it!”

The Army trains its Soldiers to be effective leaders, to be part of a team and to be the best they can be. ACAP helps ensure those values carry over into their next career. The transition begins 24 months prior to retirement or 18 months for ETS/separation. It’s highly encouraged to begin with a financial assessment with the ACS Financial Readiness Program (it’s required for all E-6 and below). The 10-point checklist to be completed during duty hours is: • Financial assessment as mentioned above • Pre-separation briefing • Completion of DD 2648 • Initial ACAP counseling session 18

It’s also helpful to reach out to the school staffers who will be working closely with your child. JBLM CrossFit: a great fit for everyone
D
By Kimberly Rowe
on’t know what a burpee, Samson Stretch or a punch jerk is? Find out with CrossFit — a strength and conditioning program to get you looking at fitness in a new way. Used by many military units, martial artists and professional athletes, CrossFit is “designed for universal scalability, making it the perfect application for any committed individual regardless of experience,” according to CrossFit.com. “We’ve used our

same routines for elderly individuals with heart disease and cage fighters one month out from televised bouts. We scale load and intensity; we don’t change programs.” Daily workouts are posted online and you can work out on your own or at a CrossFit location — join McVeigh Sports and Fitness Center and challenge yourself today. JBLM CrossFit at McVeigh is a sanctioned site and is open to patrons during gym hours. If you don’t want
to work out on your own, check out the one-hour classes Monday through Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and Saturdays at 10 a.m. (Monday and Wednesday for intermediate to advanced; Tuesday and Thursday for beginners to intermediate). There’s also a class at noon each Tuesday and Thursday, so you can squeeze in your CrossFit routine during your lunchtime. Certified instructors teach the classes and cover CrossFit fundamentals, body mechanics and walk athletes through

CrossFit exercises teach muscles to work together rather than isolating them to work independently. It’s scalable, which allows you to adapt the Workout of the Day to your fitness level. Athlete or non-athlete, old or young, if you have an injury or are overweight or weak, CrossFit can work for you, says Susan Jackson, JBLM CrossFit instructor. See class times below and try it out for yourself or work out any time McVeigh Sports and Fitness Center is open.
the Workout of the Day. Not sure if CrossFit is the right fit for you? It is, says Susan Jackson, JBLM CrossFit instructor and sports/fitness specialist and trainer. “CrossFit is good for runners. It’s great for all athletes,” she says. She also says lots of moms and non-athletes come to JBLM CrossFit. CrossFit is usually an intense 15–30 minute workout that, through muscle confusion, burns calories fast. “It works on strength, power, balance, accuracy, endurance, speed, stamina, flexibility, agility and coordination,” Jackson says. The results are outstanding, Jackson
says, with most people who attend at least three times a week noticing results — less fat, more lean muscle, increased endurance — within 30 days. If you want to get started, don’t be intimidated. There’s a short orientation at the start of the beginner’s class. Bring water and a towel and sign up on the class sign-in sheet. After the instructor teaches you body mechanics, you’ll go through the WOD. Give it a try for a month and see if you’re happy with the results. Jackson says that in addition to the physical changes and improved endurance, you’ll also feel better overall.
The JBLM Half-Marathon and 5k Fun Run is Saturday, Sept. 15. Race up to 13.1 miles through training areas — on a clear day, you can see Mount Rainier from the route. Near the finish line, tie a yellow ribbon on a tree in remembrance and appreciation of the sacrifices our military makes. The Triple Threat Triathlon 20th Anniversary Series wrapped up last month with nearly 300 crossing the finish line. For registration, results and photos, visit JBLMmwr.com/races. JBLMmwr.com

Turn your homebuying dreams into reality Editor’s note: Look for the final installment of the three-part investment series in the October issue. By Mary Cron, JBLM Financial Readiness Program
I
n past years, the “American Dream” has been synonymous with owning a home. For most, it’s been a status symbol of achieving the financial spot to finally be able to settle down and provide for your Family. For some, owning a home helps develop a sense of community and belonging and a feeling of achievement. For others, it meant that money wasn’t “thrown away” on rent. Recently, for some, owning a home took on a nightmarish quality, due in part to bad lending practices. Taking back personal responsibility and returning to financial basics can help you stay financially solvent while still pursuing the American dream. What are the financial basics? Determine if owning a home is right for you. For those of us in the military, we know that PCSing every
28
few years is almost a given. When you move, what will become of the home? If you decide to sell, will you be able to sell high enough to pay off the existing mortgage and expenses due to the sale? If you can’t sell it, is renting an option? How much will you need in reserve if you can’t sell or rent right away? Can you manage your new expenses while trying to maintain the old mortgage? Know your net worth. Making a list of your assets and liabilities gives you a better picture of where you are financially in order to become solvent. Review and revise your net worth statement at least once a year. Know your budget. Understanding where and how your money is spent enables you to make better choices when considering a home purchase. Knowing your budget will also help you calculate how much house you can afford. Owning a home isn’t just about obtaining a loan and making payments; it’s also about paying property taxes and homeowner’s insurance, maintenance and
repairs and selling costs when the time arrives. Do you have an emergency fund calculated into your budget? Know your credit score. Rates are driven by what a lender sees as your risk factor. If your credit score is up to par, you may get the best rates available. Even a fraction of a percent on a mortgage can mean the difference between saving or spending hundreds of dollars. To better equip you in the decisionmaking process when considering a large financial purchase, call Army Community Service at 253-967-1453 or the Airman & Family Readiness Center at 253-982-2695 to schedule an appointment with a financial counselor or register for an upcoming class. You may also meet with ACS Financial Readiness Program counselors at the HSO HopeNow event Wednesday, Sept. 26, 9 a.m.–4 p.m. at the McChord Club and Community Center. They’ll assist with credit report reviews, budgeting and money management. The event also provides military homeowners an opportunity to review refinance options and more. For details, call Financial Readiness or Housing Services at 253-967-5165.
