Little Apple Toyota Honda
Meredith Storm Family and MWR Marketing Little Apple Toyota Honda was purchased in 1996 by Tom and Barbara Holcombe. The Holcombe family cares about their community and it shows in their community outreach and support of several organizations in the area, including Flint Hills Bread Basket, Boys and Girls Club, and Fort Riley Family and MWR. The heart of Little Apple Toyota Honda is exactly that: heart. The dealership not only sponsors Family and MWR, but several of their staff are prior service members and love Fort Riley, the Soldiers and their families. Little Apple has been a Family and MWR sponsor since 2008, and you may have seen them and their vehicles at Family and MWR events ranging from the Summer Carnival and Fall Apple Days to the annual Easter Egg Hunt. The dealership is also a supporter of the Fort Riley Post Library. “Little Apple supports Fort Riley’s service members and families because they are the backbone of our country, protecting freedom and democracy,” Holcombe said. “We want to show our appreciation.” If you are ever in Manhattan, stop by and say thank you to Little Apple Toyota Honda – they would love to hear from you!

Heather Wilburn Family and MWR Marketing Golf pros are used to seeing green ... but not in the way they will during the 1st Infantry Division Pro-Am Tournament, set for June 26-27 at Custer Hill Golf Course. “The pro-am will give golf professionals a chance to experience a day in the life of a Soldier on day one, and then hit the course on day two to play a round with our troops,” explained David Crawley, PGA golf professional and manager at Custer Hill Golf Course. “It’s a great opportunity for the pros to learn about what it’s like to serve our nation, and a great chance for our Soldiers to learn from and play with the pros.” The experience will begin June 26, as the pros arrive at Fort Riley, tour the installation and experience first-hand
what it’s like to train and live as a Soldier, Crawley said. That evening, at 6 p.m., the golf course will host a pairing party and clinic, where Soldiers and golf professionals will be sorted into two-person teams and the Soldiers can benefit from a little professional advice. The next day, the tournament tees off at 10 a.m. “We’re very excited that we’re able to offer this unique experience to both our Soldiers and the golf pros in the region,” Crawley added. Registration costs $50 for amateurs and can be completed at Custer Hill Golf Course. Professional registration will be conducted through the Midwest Section PGA. Custer Hill Golf Course is located at 5202 Normandy Drive. For more information, call (785) 784-6000 or visit rileymwr.com/golf.

It’s a great deal, all around.” And even though bowling is definitely an indoor sport – Can you say air conditioning? – kids can stay fit and active while bowling. One hour of bowling can burn up to 240 calories and helps improve cardiovascular health. Bowling can also help youth (and adults!) develop handeye coordination, and strength and muscle tone. It’s a great addition to any fitness routine ... and it’s fun! 101 Days of Bowling is sponsored by USAA and Armed Forces Bank. Custer Hill Bowling Center is located at 7485 Normandy Drive. Pool passes offer savings on summer fun Megan Rutledge Family and MWR Marketing Summer heat got you down? Well, flip that frown around, throw on your bathing suit and head to the pool this summer! Families can save big bucks by purchasing a pool pass through Fort Riley Aquatics. User fees were implemented May 24 for recreational swimming at all Fort Riley Family and MWR pools. Pool passes offer patrons a way to save on the daily usage fees and represent a great value, said Hedy Noveroske, Fort Riley Family and MWR aquatics program manager. The decision to charge user fees at the pools was a tough one, she noted – but in the end, the nominal fees charged for usage will help keep the pools open. “With government reimbursement getting cut shorter and shorter, the
funding to support these programs is not there as it used to be,” Noveroske explained. “The income to offset the expenses to operate these facilities – generated through the user fees – will help ensure these programs are not eliminated.” Users can pay daily fees, or purchase passes in three- or six-month increments, or buy a whole year. There are options for both individual and family passes. Passes may be purchased at Eyster Pool, located at 6940 Warren Road. Eyster Pool will be closed June 2-August 1 for renovations, but the aquatics office will remain open for pass purchases and swim lesson registrations. During the renovations, all lap swimming, instructional classes, physical therapy and physical training will be conducted at Long Pool. For more information, call (785) 2399441 or visit rileymwr.com.

Training teaches Families how to ‘bounce back’ heather Wilburn Family and MWR Marketing Army families face adversity every day, tackling everything from permanentchange-of-station moves to deployments and beyond. These stressors can sometimes pile up – that’s why it’s important for families to learn to “bounce back.” That’s where Resilience Training comes in. The course, offered through Army Community Service, is a component of the Comprehensive Soldier and Family Fitness Program, and aims to enhance families’ mental and emotional strength. “Resilience Training focuses on the five dimensions of strength: emotional, social, spiritual, family and physical,” said Becky Willis, a resilience training instructor with ACS. “A basic understanding of resilience provides a rationale for the skills the participants will learn.”
30 • The Guide • Summer 2014
Students will come away from the course with an increased understanding of selfawareness, self-regulation, optimism, mental agility, strength of character and connection, she said. “Each of the skills that are included in the course build resilience by targeting one or more of these competencies,” Willis explained. “The goal is to educate spouses on how to slow down their thinking and pinpoint reasons for exaggerated responses to events, and provide tools to keep them calm and focused.” The next Resilience Training will take place from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. August 18-21 at ACS. Advance registration is highly recommended; free child care is available with advance registration only. Army Community Service is located at 7264 Normandy Drive. For more information, call (785) 239-9435.

heather Wilburn Family and MWR Marketing Once a week, the lights in the SKIESUnlimited dance studio are turned down low. Small lamps provide a warm glow, and the gentle sounds of relaxing music float through the air. If you think this sounds like the beginning of a yoga session, you’re partly right. Volunteer as a Youth Sports coach or referee
Heather Wilburn Family and MWR Marketing Character counts ... and every season, children around the world learn and grow by participating in team sports like volleyball, soccer and cheerleading. If you’re interested in helping children develop character and confidence, consider volunteering as a coach or referee for Child, Youth and School Services. “Volunteering as a Youth Sports coach or referee is a great way to give back to the community and make a difference in the lives of our children,” said Rosalind Wesley, a CYSS Administrator at Fort Riley. “It allows us to help our children and youth develop many skills that will make them successful as they grow, like discipline, persistence and teamwork.” There are tangible benefits to volunteering, as well: All volunteers receive one
