Jahorina

Jahorina is the mountain range to the southeast of Sarajevo. Its ideal geographical position guarantees more or less three to four months of good ski snow. Its highest peak reaches 1,910 metres. The ski lifts climb to 1,894 metres with fabulous views towards Sarajevo. The slopes of Jahorina are covered with tall pines as far as some 1,500 metres. From there the mountain side is relatively bare with some thick patches of klek – juniper tree, a high-altitude pine that does not grow higher than 2 metres. Jahorina is one of the most visited mountains in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and with its highest peak Ogorjelica at 1916

metres above the sea level, it is widely known by its nature, specific climate and various possibilities of winter sports, especially those for skiers. Jahorina became well-known in the world of skiing during the Sarajevo Winter Olympics in 1984, when it hosted the world’s best skiers. But during and after the war, the Jahorina ski resort partly decayed and stagnated. However, in recent years, this ski centre has been developed again becoming one of the best ski resorts in the region, with the highest and longest cable car tracks. With all that it offers to skiers, Jahorina has become a synonym for entertainment in the cold winter days, but also in the rest of the year.

Trebević

Trebević is much more to Sarajevans than simply an excursion destination, since entire city neighborhoods occupy the mountain’s northern slopes. Sarajevo and Trebević’s “embrace” is a unique example of how the urban fabric of one city is woven into its natural surroundings. The deep and shady forests of Trebević attracts visitors during the summer and, in winter, it allows one to escape the city for some fresh mountain air that is all of ten minutes away from the center of town. Laced with numerous mountain streams, Trebević is home to several hundred

different plant species, many of which are endemic, not to mention the many kinds of animal species. On a sunny day, a gorgeous view of Sarajevo, as well as the surrounding mountains, can be enjoyed from one of Trebević’s peaks, the highest of which is 1,629 meters. There are many marked mountain trails for those who love mountaineering, and Trebević is gaining in popularity as a destination for mountain bike enthusiasts. The partially renovated bobsled course attracts not only sledders, but also adrenaline addicts.

Bjelašnica

Bjelašnica is, after Jahorina, the second Olympics mountain, located close to Sarajevo In addition, Bjelašnica is the highest ski center in Bosnia and Herzegovina (the highest peak of Bosnia and Herzegovina is a mountain Nebula 2386 m above the sea level). Bjelašnica is located in the central part of Bosnia and Herzegovina, to the south-west, at a distance of only 25 km from Sarajevo. Next to it there is the Igman mountain, where most of the contests of the XIVth Winter Olympic Games in alpine and Nordic events and jumps took place. Winter weather on Bjelašnica lasts from

November to May. Special attractions are high snow drifts that can reach up to several metres. Winter is especially interesting offering a landscape of mountains covered in a snow blanket, like a white desert washed in sunshine beyond which extends nothing but the skyline. At the highest point at 2067 meters above the sea level, a weather station was built in 1894. This is the highest permanently inhabited place in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The peak with the Observatory was named Bjelašnica after the white stone and snow that lasts here until the month of August.

Vlašić

With its 1943 metres high peak Paljenik, Mount Vlasic is equally distant from the Adriatic Sea and the large inland cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Serbia. Even a hundred miles of forest roads, the river Ugar and its tributaries Ilomska Kobiljska and other rivers, endless meadows, all this is an inevitable challenge for hikers during the summer months. Snow on the mountain lasts five months providing a paradise for every skier. Legend says that the nomadic Vlachs, descendants of the ancient Romans and the ancient peoples of the Illyrians and Thracians, brought here the trademark of Mount Vlasic - Vlasic cheese.

Vlasic cheese is one of the best sheep cheeses preserved in brine. Originally made from fresh sheep and,cow milk, and then ripening two to three months. Improving the recipe for making this cheese, the Vlachs have handed it over to the shepherds from the surrounding mountains. Today Vlasic cheese is well-known throughout BiH, becoming thus its original and traditional product. In addition to Vlasic cheese, there are two trademarks of Mount Vlasic - dog and sheep-dog. Sheepdogs tornjaks have existed in this area for more than a thousand years, during which period they have defended sheep during grazing. Another trademark is Pramenka, Bosnia’s native breed of sheep.

Kupres

Kupres is located in the southwestern part of Bosnia and Herzegovina, on a plateau area of 622 km2 and at an altitude of about 1200 metres. The name Kupres was first officially mentioned in the deed of gift of King Stjepan Tomašević, a Bosnian king, on 18 September 1461. Kupres has an excellent geographical position, due to water routes passing through Kupres towards many towns in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as to neighboring Croatia and Central European countries. Kupres is about 120 km away from Split, Mostar and Banja Luka. When arriving in Kupres from any direction you feel as “climbing” and then you find before you a large valley surrounded by hills and mountains ranges. Kupres peculiarities are reflected in its geographical location, relief, altitude, climate, exceptionally rich flora and fauna, rich cultural and historical heritage and people of wide and open hearts.

Continental and Mediterranean climates intersect in Kupres. Winters are harsh, with heavy snow, many would say as in Siberia. Due to the abundance of snow, its slopes and and olive groves, Kupres is recognized as a top tourist destination in winter. While in most other places in the spring vegetation awakes, Kupres is, as if asleep, still hibernating. And, then warm Mediterranean sunshine washes Kupres and vegetation suddenly awakes offering a wealth of diverse flowers, which is an attractive phenomenon. Summers are warm and sunny. But even during the greatest summer heat there is always a gentle breeze in Kupres. Especially beautiful are the chilly evenings when you enjoy strolling across Kupres landscapes, and when you go to sleep, covering yourself with a blanket. Autumns in Kupres can be extremely enjoyable and beautiful, without fog and with plenty of sunshine. Old Kupres people call such autumns they Miholjsko ljeto (Indian summer).

Blidinje Nature Park

The open and barren valley leading into the park is a result of the two past glacial periods. The melting glaciers from Cvrsnica created this massive valley between Cvrsnica and Vran mountains. Blidinje Lake is the direct result of a glacial retreat located at 1,184 m in the valley below. This retreat for ice, water and debris did not, however, manage to stop a wide range of life forms from prospering here. Accompanying some of the rocky and seemingly lifeless slopes are thick forests of pine, including the endemic white-bark pine at Masna Luka called Pinus leuco dermis. Three types of wild thyme and dozens of wild

flowers cover the valley and mountain sides in the spring and summer. The 3-5 km wide valley, situated at an elevation of 1,1501,300 m, is well-known for medieval stecci (standing tombstones). It is not clear how long human settlements have existed here but a research began when Blidinje received recently its status as a Nature Park. Traces of Illyrian tombs and Roman roads indicate that life existed in Blidinje at least 2,500 years ago. The large necropolis at Dugo Polje indicates that the tribes of Slavs that settling down here in the 7th century AD made this area their home. The park is set in long sweeping valleys.

National Park Sutjeska

Sutjeska is one of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s oldest parks. It is famous for the Partisan victory over the Germans in WW II and there are large stone monuments commemorating the event. The park itself is 17,500 hectares of magnificent and untouched wilderness. It hosts one of the last two remaining primeval forests in Europe, called Perucica. Beech trees tower over 60 metres high and endemic black pines stem from the rocky faces that protect the ancient forest. Skakavac waterfall can be seen from the look-out point – this seventy five metre plus waterfall

is dwarfed by the massive blanket of green trees that cover the valley. The Sutjeska River has carved a stunning valley through the middle of the park and divides Zelengora (Green Peaks) Mountain from Maglic and Volujak Mountains. Bosnia and Herzegovina’s highest peak, Maglic at over 2,386m, is located in the park, directly on the border with Montenegro. It presents a challenging climb for even experienced hikers. Zelengora Mountain is great for hiking and walking and there are several newly renovated mountain huts on the mountain. Bear and wolf sightings are common.

All this is just an introduction to the story about the importance of an 800 m long and only 1,60 m high tunnel that connected the occupied and free Sarajevo territory. Upon arrival at the museum, you’ll pass through 20 m of the original tunnel and see the movie about the war in Sarajevo upon which the guide will explain the role of the tunnel during the siege, its construction, use method and will happily answer all your questions. On the way back to the town, let’s talk about Sarajevo and its future.
