The Sidewinder Big Band to the Alton Maltings Cardiac Rehab are delighted to announce the return of the 16-piece Sidewinder Big Band who have been performing together for the last 10 years and have performed across the South-East of England, including a Christmas concert for Cardiac Rehab in 2019, which got people in the mood! Much of their repertoire comes from the American Song Book but they perform a wide variety of music ranging from the traditional big band sounds of Count Basie, Buddy Rich, Glenn Miller and Duke Ellington to the more contemporary sounds of bands like Earth, Wind and Fire and the Average White Band. Tickets are priced at £15pp which includes a glass of wine. All proceeds from the evening will help Cardiac Rehab and you are guaranteed a night out to remember. Tickets are also available for the Rehab Guest Lecture, this year featuring esteemed physicist and broadcaster Professor Jim Al-Khalili. COMMUNITY / PROPERTY Alresford Rotary - Christmas Shoeboxes As has been the case for many years Alresford Rotary invites everyone to participate in the Wessex Rotary Shoebox Scheme and bring joy to disadvantaged children in Albania, Montenegro, Romania and the Philippines. Compared with previous years, fewer boxes were contributed because of the global pandemic. Those that were sent did not leave the UK until the new year. Although the boxes arrived late, it would have been of little concern to many of the recipients who had never before received any present. Alresford Rotary is supported by many local schools, Churches Together in Alresford, and other organizations such as the Women's Institute and Mother's Union. Individuals or representatives of local groups interested in becoming involved can contact James Pinniger (wjrp@hotmail.co.uk / 738788), who can provide as many copies of the relevant leaflet as you need. Please adhere to the detailed "do's and don'ts" specified in the scheme leaflet. Alresford Rotary carefully inspects all boxes collected and removes any "contraband" items before the boxes are delivered to a central collection center. Whenever items are removed, we strive to find them a good home, but we prefer that there are none! In summary, all items must be new or "as good as new" and for educational, health, and hygiene purposes. Please DO NOT include battery-powered items, war-related items, large clothing or shoes, books of a religious, racial, or political nature, food, liquids, sweets, medicines, large toys, or sharp objects. Boxes MUST NOT exceed 12” x 7” x 6” / 30 x 18 x 15 cm. Please specify whether your box is for a boy or a girl, as well as their age (1-3, 4-7, 8-11, or 12-15). To facilitate Customs inspection, boxes should be wrapped in wrapping paper and the lid wrapped separately from the main body of the box. The contents of each box must not be individually wrapped. A donation towards the cost of transport and administration is requested in respect of each box contributed. For many years the requested donation has been £1 but this year to offset increased costs £1.50 is requested. Boxes need to be ready by the second week of November. Remember Remember the Fifth of November! - All being well, what we modestly consider to be the best mid Hampshire’s firework display and bonfire night, will return with a bang after a years absence on Friday 5th November. The display will be preceded by the traditional torchlit procession down West Street from 7pm. Not to be missed! New Alresford Town Council Streets Ahead There are many people to thank for their efforts over lockdown, and one group locally that deserves special thanks are the street co-ordinators and helpline team who made up the nonmedical support network in Alresford. They leapt into action due to the urgency of the situation to ensure a clear support route for everyone in need of help in our town. We were overwhelmed by the response and in no time, there were street co-ordinators for all 110 streets. They in turn contacted everyone in their street sharing their contact details and acted as a conduit by matching requests to offers of help. In total there were some 200 volunteers in the network, along with many times those numbers in neighbours, friends and family helping out. The Alresford community spirit is alive and well with WhatsApp groups started due to Lockdown still operating bringing an already caring community even closer. On behalf of New Alresford Town Council, Alresford PIGS, Alresford Rotary and Churches Together congratulations to you and many thanks for the time you put into it and for your kindness and generosity in helping your community. The pandemic is still working itself out, and there is practical help available via

The Lower meeting room is located on the ground floor of Alresford Recreation Centre and is readily accessible with café facilities and plenty of parking on site. Parking at Arlebury Park We are pleased that the sporting events at Arlebury Park are so popular, the accompanying car parking mayhem is not welcome though. Please park within the allocated parking bays. Do not park in front of the gate by Alresford Recreation Centre as access may be needed for an ambulance in the event of an injury. There is additional parking at Perin's and Station Road. Winchester Parking Enforcement will be visiting during future events. Thank you for your cooperation Vandalism There have been reports of

vandalism in playgrounds across the district and sadly our parks have suffered too. In Arlebury Park, the little wooden boat in the play area was set fire to and in Sun Hill Rec, the little wooden train was tipped over. Both items have been taped off together with "Out of Use" signage whilst we assess the damage.

Alresford Surgery News Before Entering The Surgery Today

You need to be wearing a face covering/mask before entering the building, even if collecting a prescription. To ensure there are as few patients in the building as possible, • Do not attend more than 5 minutes before your appointment time. • You should attend the surgery alone, unless you need an essential carer or parent/guardian to accompany you.

Adult Flu Clinics

Initial text invites will be going out to patients shortly to book in for their annual flu vaccines. These messages will give details of how to book for your flu vaccine, our preferred method is via Patient Access or the NHS APP. Due to current issues with self-isolating & our services being unprecedentedly busy, using the online booking system will mean less time waiting on the phone and clear our main lines for more urgent calls and, so we request all patients use this system, where possible. If you are unable to use the automated system, then please ensure that you call after 2PM to book your appointment. Those eligible for NHS influenza vaccination in 2021 to 2022 are: • Those aged 6 months to under 50 years in clinical risk groups. • Pregnant women • Those aged 50 years and over • Those in long-stay residential care homes • Carers • Close contacts of immunocompromised individuals • Frontline health and social care staff We have weekday flu clinics scheduled throughout September & October, with the addition of the following Saturday clinics; *Saturday 25th September and *Saturday 9th October Please make sure you wear a face covering when you come for your flu jab. Please make sure you wear a short sleeved shirt or top and that your outer clothing can be easily removed. We will need to access the very top of your arm in order to administer the vaccine and anything you can do to make that easier would be very much appreciated. Please note at the time of going to press we have just heard of a national flu vaccine delivery issue, which is delaying some deliveries by up to 2 weeks, if you do not hear from us please assume your vaccination is going ahead.

We will also be contacting parents whose children are aged 2-3 or aged 4-17 and have a condition which puts them at greater risk if they get flu. Children in years R-7 will be vaccinated in school by

Welcome to out new GP trainees

As many of you will know, we are a training practice which means we regularly host doctors who are undergoing their specialist GP training. Prior to starting the GP Specialist Training Programme a doctor will usually have worked in a number of different hospital departments gaining skills, knowledge and experience. The GP training programme takes 3 years and during the first two years of this a GP trainee will undertake placements in a number of different medical specialties including a six month placement in a GP surgery. The final year of the training programme takes place in a different practice where the trainee (or Registrar as they are known) will use the knowledge and experience they have already have to gain the particular skills of a GP. We are very pleased to introduce our new cohort of trainee GPs, Dr Zane Koetser & Dr Ghayth Sandouka.

If you have had COVID over the last few months and have been given a pulse oximeter by the surgery please could you return it (if you haven't already done so). If you have one please just pop it in a bag or an envelope and drop it into reception or into the letter box on the front of the surgery. Many thanks for your help!

There is currently an international shortage of blood bottles used for taking samples and clinicians working in GP practices, hospitals, community and mental health trusts and ambulance trusts have been asked to suspend non-essential blood tests. Clinicians and managers in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight are working together to be more efficient. We will ensure we don't waste blood bottles and that we don't duplicate tests which have already been done. We are being thoughtful about which tests are ordered and prioritising those tests which will have an immediate impact on the diagnosis or treatment. Godolphin School At Godolphin we place a huge emphasis on reading, and more specifically reading for pleasure, if students enjoy reading then they are relaxing while broadening their minds and learning empathy. With more and more parents worrying about excessive screen time it becomes increasingly important to promote an alternative which has been proved time and time again to have great health benefits. Thankfully, it is not difficult at the moment with such a fabulously diverse range of zany and hugely imaginative authors writing for the young. It is a good time to be a reader, and this has been obvious at the literary festivals we have hosted here at Godolphin since 2015. The positive response from the many hundreds of students who have attended our festivals, from primaries and secondaries across Salisbury, have proved how popular children’s authors have become with their readers. The extraordinary enthusiasm showed for authors such as Lucy Worsley, Lauren St John and Robin Stevens proves the young think authors are pretty cool.

We host festivals to bring authors to their readers and to promote the thought that reading is something we value. We run events for all ages and this year we have young children from primary schools listening to Tracey Corderoy talk about her picture books, as well as Onjali Q Rauf speak about The Boy at the Back of the Class to older children. Local secondary schools will come in to hear MA Bennett talk about her popular teen series S.T.A.G.S. utumn arrives with a flurry of leaves and the hint of a chill. Done picking the blackberries, we’ll wait for the sloes to be frosted, before we introduce them to the gin that waits for them too. In orchards, apples no longer aloft languish in long grass beneath rapidly balding boughs. On warmer days in slanting sunlight, sleepy wasps buzz about their bruised, browning flesh. The nights draw in, suddenly it seems. We retreat into our home, close the doors and pull together the curtains. We shut out the gathering gloom and allay all thoughts of oncoming winter. And Halloween comes, when it’s said the veils that separate the world of the living from that of the dead become thin and porous. Traditionally, we’d light candles to guide our departed loved ones back to us and set them a place at the table. Turnips and pumpkins would be carved into grotesque faces to ward off evil - and offerings of food were left on the doorstep to placate malevolent spirits. It was and still is, a time for feasting, dressing up in costumes, games and storytelling. And these might be my Halloween tales to tell. I last heard this first one many years ago; the teller is no longer with us, so sadly I can’t ask them to tell it to me afresh. I believe it took place in the ’70s and this is how I remember it… Parked up one night outside Beaulieu Abbey Domus, a woman sits in the car and waits for her husband. He’s there after-hours on some business and she’s come along for the ride. Sat there alone in the darkness, I suspect that time trickles by slowly for her. By and by her husband returns to the car, together with a staff member who apologises for keeping him so long. She says it’s alright, that she’s been listening to the recording of the monks singing, like they do. Must have been playing from somewhere inside the ruins, for the tourists she supposes..? Excellent, logical explanation in theory, but apparently anything visitor-related had long since been

switched off for the day. The chanting of the Monks that she thought she’d heard? Whatever it was, it was no recording. Postscript: And it seems she hasn’t been the only one to hear the chants - others have reported similar experiences. Here is another tale, one such as might be shared of a Halloween night, autumnal gusts rattling the letter box and rain thrashing wetly at the windows. This one is mine. It was a Saturday morning and I had some tasks to finish off at the office. I didn’t usually work weekends and I wasn’t planning on being there long, so my husband came with me. We were going on from there once I was done – shopping I think. Sat at my desk, I saw a movement to my left at the far end of the open-plan space. We were alone in the building and the doors were locked, so assuming it was my beloved with that promised cup of coffee, I looked up expectantly. A tall, slim figure wearing what I’d describe as a beige boiler suit was just disappearing around the corner and out of my field of vision. He most definitely was not my shorter, stockier, jeans-clad husband. Startled, confused, I sat for a moment then got up from my desk, just as my husband came rushing out of the kitchen towards me. “I’ve just seen some bloke walk past. I think he’s gone into the loos.” He exclaimed, looking as startled and confused as I felt. “I saw him too. Wearing overalls?” He nodded “Yes, biscuit-coloured.” We both went and searched the toilets, which were located down a dead-end corridor. Although we can’t explain why, neither of us were the least bit surprised that no-one was there. I should mention here that the office was located in a brick-walled Nissen hut. It was situated on the periphery of an airfield; both RAF and USAAF squadrons had used it as a base during WW2. And the beige overalls? Can’t be sure of course, but they looked very much like a flying suit.

Holey Moley – Let’s look at the importance of aeration We mostly look at our lawns from above, judging their health by the appearance of their leaves. Let’s take a moment to consider what’s going on beneath the surface and the importance of the soil structure in the health of your lawn. When it comes to an iceberg, we all know that there’s much more going on under the surface of the sea than there is above. Your lawn isn’t dissimilar. Within the soil, a network of roots not only anchors the plant, but also acts as it’s access to essential nutrients and moisture. Without a healthy, fully functional and well-developed root system your grass plant is never going to thrive.

Mind the gaps

Believe it or not, roots don’t actually grow in soil. Roots grow in the gaps within the soil, working their way deep into the ground through the network of tiny crack between the minerals and organic matter that makes up what we call soil. In order for soil to be healthy it should comprise of 25% air, 25% water, 45% minerals – that’s what you get when large rocks are broken down over time. And let’s not forget the remaining 5% which is humus. Not the chickpea dip, humus is the organic matter created when animals and plants decompose and it’s the essential food source for life within the soil. As soil forms from the action of weather on rocks, plants begin to grow in it. These plants mature then die and new ones grow in their place. The leaves and roots of the dead plants are added to the soil. In addition, animals eat plants and other animals and their waste and, when they die, their bodies are added to the soil. Bacteria, fungi, worms and other creatures that live in the soil break down plant litter and the animal waste or remains and these then become the organic matter which help create healthy soil.

Life’s essentials

All living things need three essentials to survive. Whether you’re an elephant or an earthworm, unless you have water, air and food you’re not going to survive for very long. Restrict any of these three essentials and that living thing is going to suffer and struggle to be healthy. Your grass plants are no different and neither are the microbes within the soil that are critical to the health of your lawn.

Compaction – it’s a hard life

Now you have a bit of background about what your lawn soil is made up of and what makes it healthy, let’s talk about the importance of air gaps within your soil. Our lawns get a lot of foot traffic. We are out there barbecuing, kicking a ball around, playing with the dog or pegging out the laundry. Over time this foot traffic can compact the soil beneath your

lawn, gradually reducing the air gaps which are essential to life. Less air means fewer insects that break down dead plant material. It also means less microbial activity and this is a major issue. These beneficial microbes create a relationship with the plant roots, they make important nutrients available to the plant and they produce growth hormones and help protect the plant from pests, parasites and diseases. Fewer microbes means that the balance of nature is being upset – don’t upset Mother Nature!

Feeling gassy

Air gaps within the soil are also essential for the health of the plant. Without air your grass would die. Plants don’t just breathe through their leaves, for roots to be healthy they too must breathe. Roots take in oxygen through tiny hairs within the gaps in the soil, they use this oxygen and then expel carbon dioxide. If the plant roots have limited access to air gaps within the soil then this gaseous exchange is compromised and the plant will be weakened, making it less vigorous and more susceptible to attack from pests and disease.

Loosen up man

So, you may we wonder what we can do to help nature along and create a healthier environment for all this subterranean activity. The answer is aeration. What’s aeration I hear you ask. Let me explain; aeration is the mechanical introduction of air spaces within your lawn soil to provide the essential balance needed to support soil life and healthy roots. In its most simple form, you could do this with a garden fork. Stamp the fork into the ground, rock it back and forth, remove and repeat - over the whole lawn area. Trust me, this is really hard work and there are better ways to work up a sweat. Lawn care professionals use a petrol-powered machine specifically designed for the task. It’s still hard work but its far more effective than a garden fork. The aerator is fitted with a metal tine that is driven deep into the ground to create a hole. If a hollow tine is used it pulls out a small plug of soil which is deposited on the surface of the lawn and soon breaks down. The surrounding soil now has the space to ‘relax’ into the hole, creating cracks and gaps within the soil and more air spaces essential to life. These newly created holes also allow dead plant matter into the soil where it can decompose and be broken down by insects and beneficial microbes, therefore creating a heathier soil environment.

Root pruning

The sharp edge of a hollow tine cuts into the soil and also cuts through the roots of the grass plants. When these roots re-grow, they do so in a more fibrous way and this gives them a greater surface area. More roots mean more access to food, water and air – the essentials for a healthy plant. Aeration is by far the most beneficial mechanical process for any lawn and should ideally happen at least once a year.

Drainage issues

Finally, compaction issues are often responsible for water-logging. When the air gaps become filled with water instead of air, they prevent the roots from accessing the essential air needed for life. The lack of air in the soil also impacts the life of beneficial bacteria and promotes the life of damaging bacteria which reproduce in anaerobic environments. This virtual ‘soil death’ will result in actual grass plant death. Regular aeration relieves compaction which can reduce waterlogging. Now with more memory, 64MB for the entry level model and a sharper display with a new camera, it is very much the go to tablet. The Hampshire Fair

The Winchester 10km Road Race started back in 1983 at a 10-mile distance. The race adopted the popular 10km format in the late 1980s. The 2021 edition of The Winchester 10km Road Race will be held on Sunday 31st October 2021 (we have had to move the date later in the year due to COVID-19).

The Hampshire Fair is one of the leading shopping events of the year, taking place in the stunning location of The Grange near Alresford on Wednesday 6th October 2021. We look forward to welcoming you all to this year’s fair where we will take all precautions to ensure a friendly and Covid-safe experience. Over 60 wonderful stallholders, handpicked by our discerning committee, will offer a diverse and high-quality shopping experience for our visitors. There will be a wonderful café offering lunch and refreshments - a great place to meet up with your friends.

The race will feature a 1 lap route which is a mix of urban and countryside starting outside the historic Winchester Guildhall in the Broadway. This year features a revised start with the race leaving the Broadway via the exit next to King Alfred's statue. The route heads up St George's Street before going out towards the village of Kingsworthy. The return leg passes through the village of Headbourne Worthy and back towards Winchester before finishing at The North Walls Recreation Centre. An event for all and this year falls on 31st October - why not enter our Halloween Fancy Dress Competition?! Prizes for the best dressed! What time does the run start? The run will start at 8.30am so please make sure you are ready and on the start line in plenty of time. Why does it start so early? When the race first started in 1983 the start time was 2pm. This was the same for our neighbours at Eastleigh 10km. Back then you could hear a pin drop in the High St. Fast forward to 2021 and Sunday is possibly the busiest day of the week in the High St. We are incredibly lucky that Winchester City Council has allowed the event to grow to one of the largest 10km runs in Hampshire. With extra runners comes extra responsibility. Winchester has a rather unique road system which does not work well with road closures. To keep disruption to local residents and business owners to a minimum, an earlier start ensures we keep most people happy. With less traffic on the road at 8.30am it makes it a safer event for all concerned. Where is the race start? Winchester Guildhall, 168 High St, Winchester, Hampshire SO23 9BA

The Autumn Hampshire Art Show The Autumn Hampshire Art Show Our annual autumn show promises to be more remarkable and dynamic than ever as Nadia Waterfield Fine Art exhibits some captivating new ‘finds’. Curried Pumpkin Soup Don't waste your pumpkins this Halloween. Make a delicious pumpkin Soup, packed with goodness of pumpkin, carrot and apple flavoured with whole spices and a dash of curry powder. Soups are the best comfort meal for this time of the year. Preparation: 15 minutes, Cook time: 20 minutes Servings: 4 bowls Ingredients

1 onion, chopped 1 medium sized pumpkin, peeled, deseeded and cubed 2 carrots, peeled and chopped 1 apple, peeled and cut into cubes 4 - 5 garlic cloves, chopped Salt and black pepper as per taste 2 tbsp olive oil 1 litre vegetable stock 1/4 tsp Curry Powder

Whole Spices (to be removed after cooking) 1 bay leaf 1 star anise 2 - 3 inch cinnamon stick

Method

In a saucepan heat some olive oil over medium heat. Add whole spices and saute until aroma is released. Add onion and garlic, saute until translucent but not brown. Now add carrot, saute for 4 - 5 minutes followed by pumpkin and apple. Season with salt and pepper, as per taste. Mix nicely. Add curry powder and hot vegetable stock. Bring the soup to rapid boil once and then reduce the flame to low. Let it simmer over medium heat until liquid is reduced to half and vegetables are tender. Remove whole spices from the soup. Puree the soup to smooth consistency in blender. While serving finish with tsp of cream, olive oil, sprinkle melon seeds and chili flakes on top. Serve hot with a little fresh cream stirred in and a sprinkle of chilli flakes if you like a bit more spice!

is the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness, with cool morning breezes, birds twittering in the skies, golden leaves, and crimson sunsets. It’s not hard to see why autumn has inspired some of our greatest literary figures, from Keats to Shakespeare. As we say the long goodbye to summer and enjoy the last of its comforting warmth, September and October are some of the best months of the year to experience the stunning beauty of the South Downs National Park.

It’s also a great time of the year to enjoy taking photographs in the National Park, which stretches for almost 100 miles from Winchester to Eastbourne and includes some of the UK’s most picturesque hills, valleys, rivers, streams and forests.

Woodland walks – There’s nothing quite like a forest adventure with the sound of trilling birds and crunchy autumn leaves underfoot. Did you know that almost a quarter of the National Park is covered by glorious treescape, with more woodland than any other National Park in England and Wales? The South Downs is blessed with some very tranquil woodlands, often with openings in the trees offering majestic views of the chalky hills. Why not try Alice Holt, Queen Elizabeth Country Park, Slindon or Friston? A walk and pub fare – Who could fail to be charmed by a crisp autumn walk, followed by a steaming supper by a log fire at a wood-beamed inn? The National Park has some fantastic eateries and a bit of online research (CAMRA is a good place to start) and booking ahead are all it takes to round off your day-out with something really special.

With almost two months left of the National Park’s annual photo competition, people are being encouraged to capture the serenity of this special season in the South Downs.

Here are three ideas for autumn days-out in the National Park, combined with snapping some awesome shots on your camera or mobile phone:

The theme for this year’s competition is “Nature Makes Me Happy” and judges are looking for uplifting images that capture the beauty of the natural world – whether that be landscape, wildlife, rivers and coastline, woodland, a piece of history, or people enjoying the National Park. The broad theme could also cover those “happy places” in the South Downs that replenish the soul. The top prize for the adult category will be £250, with a runnerup prize of £150, third prize of £100 and fourth prize of £50 The youth competition returns this year for budding young photographers – with categories 10 years and under and 11 to 17. There will be a prize of a family pass to Marwell Zoo for the 10 years and under category, while the prize for 11 to 17 category will be a family pass for a Forest Segway outdoor adventure ride at Go Ape. I’ve included two pictures this month: The picture of the ‘yellow brick road’ is not of The Watercress Way, but a section of the new cycle path from Worthy Down south towards to the Water Treatment site off the Andover road. It’s a fantastic surface, and the section that is done is a credit to Hampshire County Council who have constructed it, but unfortunately, it doesn’t reach all the way to Winchester yet. I am continuing to press for this route to be completed and I’d welcome your views. I’ve been trying to get the Millennium path mended for several years, and a recent sighting (and photo) of ducks swimming in the puddles on the path seemed to chime with Hampshire County Council! I’m delighted that they have now agreed a budget for this work. It’s a sensitive site ecologically, so the County Council will be working with the Winterbournes project and others to upgrade the path, hopefully before someone falls in the river. They have also agreed a budget to upgrade the path to Bishop’s Sutton: hooray!

Supporting our Businesses Self Employed and Business Covid-19 grant help - From Monday 6 September, businesses and organisations who continue to be impacted by COVID-19 are being urged to act now and apply for the additional grant scheme. The new COVID-19 Business Challenges (CBC) one-off grant to compensate organisations and businesses based in our district, for loss of income during the six week period from 1 July to 16 August 2021.

The County Council is preparing the budget for 2022-23 and it inevitably includes cuts. I’m pleased to see that the proposal to cut the school crossing patrols budget has gone: if we want children to walk to school, they must be helped to cross busy roads safely. There are a number of Consultations this Autumn: the proposal for the County Deal (similar to the Mayoral deal) will go out in early October. I’ll give notice of others as they arrive. There’s still no news of the New Hospital Consultation, but it was a huge pleasure to visit the Winchester Hospice on its open weekend. Huge thanks to every one of the fundraisers, NHS staff and Trustees. It will support residents as inpatients and whilst using their Hospice at Home service. Please continue to support them now the building is up and running- they need £1/2 million per year. You can donate online- or maybe run an event? Girls only sixth form: outdated notion or catalyst for success? ‘It’s not the real world’ and ‘girls won’t cope when they go to university if they haven’t been to school with boys’ are the frequent reactions I hear to the idea of an all-girls sixth form. Having worked in all-girls’ schools for over twenty years, I can assure you that both my own experience and scientific research prove that these views are far from the truth. In fact, being in an all-girls learning environment gives young women the best possible chance of flourishing in the world beyond school. Let’s first consider the real world. In spite of some significant steps towards equality, girls and young women are under greater pressure than ever to conform to social stereotypes. From gender reveal parties where the unborn child is greeted with gendered paraphernalia such as pink or blue balloons, to clichés about not liking competition or having neat handwriting, young women continue to be channelled towards, and judged against, outdated notions of the female ideal. Humans are undeniably social creatures who like to fit in. The effect of stereotypes, therefore, is that many young people end up feeling they have to conform. At school this means girls avoiding so-called ‘male’ subjects, activities which are ‘non-feminine’ and roles which might lead to them being criticised as ‘bossy’ or ‘shrill’. Even as young as six, many children have internalised stereotypes such as that maths is for boys. Depressing as that is, the plasticity of our brains means that there is always time to help our pupils escape the constraints of gender stereotyping. In girls-only sixth forms, young women have the space and encouragement to test and develop their own interests. Research shows the success of this model in many areas such as developing greater levels of self-confidence and facilitating the study of STEM subjects. In fact, girls educated in single-sex school are just as self-confident as boys educated in boys’ schools and significantly more likely to study subjects such as physics than girls in co-educational schools. In addition, girls in single-sex schools are more inclined to carry on playing sport until 18 benefitting from the resulting positive effects on physical and mental health. Indeed, a Bristol University study found that single-sex schools encourage “improved self-esteem, psychological and social wellbeing in adolescent girls”. Moreover, every pupil leadership role is occupied by a young woman who is starting to learn about the positive impact that she can have on the world around her. As a 2018 article pointed out, in a girls’ school, girls are intentionally “equipped with the knowledge and skills required to overcome social and cultural gender biases and in doing so actively break the stereotypical norms that define women in society.”

This brings us to the second question about to what extent an allgirls sixth form prepares young women for university. At St Swithun’s around 25% of our leavers go on to study STEM-related subjects at top universities in the UK and overseas and will enter careers that still tend to be male-dominated. Our pupils have many opportunities outside the classroom to interact with young people from a range of other schools in drama and music productions such as our celebrated St Swithun’s Live rock concert, at competitions such as national debating challenges or Model United Nations and at social events. They are perfectly placed to enjoy good relationships with all kinds of people when they leave our sixth form having developed a quiet self-confidence and a genuine interest in others. A recent poll of our leavers from the past two decades revealed overwhelmingly that they formed healthy and happy relationships with male students precisely because they approached them as equals.

New Alresford Town Trust News The Eel House

Since opening in 2008, the Eel House has displayed a number of detailed information boards on its public open days. While very informative, these have lacked one essential part - a graphic design of the lifecycle of the eel. This is the extraordinary story of the 5,000 mile “round trip” of eels from their European homes, to mate in the Sargasso Sea from where their eggs and larvae are taken by the Gulf Stream back to Europe. This lack has now been remedied by a beautifully designed and printed picture of this amazing journey by Stephen Harte and generously donated by him to the Eel House.

Visitors to the Bridge - 308, Museum - 242 and Eel House - 203 A total of 753 (amazing similar in total) Donations: Bridge £90, Museum £83 and Eel House £111 Total £284 plus gift aid of £359 So the 2 days produced Visitors 1505 and total donations including gift aid £729 which will go to the Museum and Eel house upkeep. The Trustees themselves were fully involved as was David Woods (stalwart) of the Eel House, City/County Councillors plus around 20 volunteers in total. There was never a dull moment with interesting observations and helpful comments . As chair of NATT I have been involved in most of the open days,starting with the Eel House in 2008 and extending to the other 2 sites over the last few years.,This was one of the best! Open day at the Eel House, Norman Bridge & Museum

What a magnificence day and performance by the hard working volunteers at the Town Trust's 3 sites namely The Eel house,Norman Bridge and Museum. The advance publicity provided by Nicky Gotlieb helped provide a very good turnout of interesting and lovely people who all enjoyed the sites and were pleased to meet the volunteers. The Museum was the star attraction this time and many remarked on the many changes and additions since its opening a couple of years ago. The first open day figures were: Visitors to the Bridge - 287, Museum - 271 and Eel house - 194 A total of 752 Donations: Bridge £36, Museum £163 and Eel house £97 Total £296 plus gift Aid of £370 The 30/8/21 bank holiday results were:

the town. The area is defined as the land on each side of the road from Pound Hill to Drove Lane. Regular checks and maintenance works are made on the trees, bulb planting is organised, and the grass cut. Broad Street: The collection of all dues and revenues from Broad Street, including its annual fair, the weekly Thursday and monthly Sunday markets; in addition, there are occasional Continental markets. They are also responsible for the upkeep of the trees along the Street, and permission is given for road closures during the annual Watercress Festival, third Sunday in May, and the October fair which this year is on Thursday 14 October. The Old Fire Station: As landlord of the 1881 building, its upkeep is the responsibility of the trustees. It currently houses Andrew Lawes' picture framing business and the Alresford Museum. The Eel House: As part of the team that worked to save the partially collapsed building which sits astride the River Alre, the Trust agreed to act as the umbrella organisation under which various bodies support the Eel House. The Trust now lease the building and maintain it. The Minibus: The service was first started about 45 years ago to take the elderly and disabled shopping, to appointments, sometimes on day trips. The Alresford Museum: Operates under the umbrella of the Town Trust with the objective to provide and maintain a museum for the town. The Museum has taken over the old garage part of the Old Fire Station to provide a small exhibition area with the centrepiece being the old Tichborne Park Steamer Fire Engine.
