The importance of a qualified agent Legislation moves quickly within lettings, and so it is important to keep up with the plethora of changes. In order to remain ‘in the know’ agents can join ARLA Propertymark. To become a Member, the agent must complete the Level 3 exam, which demonstrates their knowledge and competence. At Hellards, we are delighted that both our Property Managers have recently passed their exams and are now full members of ARLA. Our Accounts Manager is currently studying to complete her exams. In the future, the Government are looking to ensure that all agents working in the Private Rental Sector are fully qualified. This will mean an end to the rogue agents that sadly give the industry a bad name. For Landlords, the importance of using a qualified agent cannot be stressed enough. With more legislation on the horizon, as outlined

in the Government’s recent White Paper entitled “A fairer private rented sector”, it would be easy for a landlord to become unstuck. From October, there are further amendments to legislation surrounding smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. “Would you like some?” Himself asked. Like an iridescent caterpillar, a blue moustache curled around his top lip. She looked dubious. The smoothie that he was so obviously enjoying was an unnatural shade of Prussian blue and she’d read somewhere that there was no truly blue food. “I might – depends what’s in it..” “Banana, apple, ginger, pear … umm..” He looked at the glass of blue-green gloop as if seeking inspiration, “Oh yes, oats and yoghurt.” “But why is it blue?” “Knew there was something else – blue spirulina powder.” He took another appreciative slurp. “Want some?” As she was steering away from dairy, regretfully she declined. “Can’t. Yoghurt. Although it’s a wonderful colour. Reminds me of one of those expensive paints that come in fancy tins with uber tasteful labels; names like Dragonfly Nasal Hairs and Eau de Workhouse. They’d probably call that something like ‘Lascivious Lobster.” At some point in their shared history they’d toyed with the idea of painting their dining room ‘Din-Dins’ or something similar. Seemed appropriate. Until Himself had looked at the sample on the wall and declared “looks like dried blood,” which had somewhat killed it for her; she’d shuddered and reached for the old faithful - magnolia... “Anyway, what’s wrong with yoghurt?” Himself took another gulp of ‘Lascivious Lobster’ and smacked his lips. “I’m seeing if dairy is why I occasionally blow up like a monsoon frog. Apparently,” she prepared to impart some of her research, “lots of people experience a reduced ability to absorb lactose after infancy. Leads to bloating, diarrhoea and farting.” “That’s attractive,” Himself chuckled and continued to consume his bizarre looking drink. “Although,” she hastened to add “I can neither deny nor confirm that I’m experiencing the whole spectrum of symptoms. I wouldn’t want to dispel any vestiges of mystery in our marriage.” “Does this mean,” he fixed her with a quizzical look over the top of the glass, “that you’ll have to declare this as well as the gluten thing when we go out to eat?” She understood his concern. At their last trip to a carvery she’d been asked if she had any allergies. “Well, a bit of a gluten

intolerance, that’s all. Not serious,” she’d assured airily, anticipating the simple and low key receipt of the usual allergen sheet. But nothing so simple and low key.. When they reached the head of the queue, despite her protestations, the chef proceeded to cheerfully clean down his workstation and replace all of the utensils in the self-service veg section. It was a notable demonstration of duty of care. It was thorough. It was vigorous. It took quite a while... “The locals are getting restless,” whispered Himself, barely containing his amusement at her stricken expression. And her flustered “I’m terribly sorry,” to the people lined up behind her fell on deaf and hungry ears. There were frowns from the queue. Mortified, she quickly dished up her veg with the new serving spoons and scuttled back to their table, now very much aware that it was in the middle of the restaurant. “We can run, but we can’t hide,” Himself commented chirpily as he tucked into his dinner. She wondered if they’d best eat fast and slope off, but then noticed another couple arriving. Duly approached by staff they were asked, “Any allergies?” “Well we’re not very good with gluten…” came the answer. “Oh crikey,” Himself muttered happily. It was a lot busier by the time this new couple reached the front of the long queue. And the locals were looking even hungrier as the chef once more went through his good-natured, comprehensive and lengthy cleaning process. This time there were quiet mutterings in addition to the grumpy looks. The couple quickly served up their veg with the clean spoons and, revealing an impressive turn of speed, scuttled off to their table. Himself finished his meal and they left. “Woe-betide anyone who gets between a Brit and their roast dinner,” he laughingly observed. Some weeks later, they went to a pizza restaurant for their date night. As they confirmed their reservation, the helpful waiter uttered those fateful words.. “Any allergies?” As Himself started with “Well..” her reaction was immediate and almost a shout, “NO THANK YOU.” And then more quietly, “just a copy of the allergen menu please.” At Himself’s questioning look she smiled sheepishly and said, “after all that fuss I caused before, that, my darling, is my new ‘Allergic reaction’.”

National Garden Scheme Hampshire The Community Gardens awards were announced a few weeks ago. For 2022 the National Garden Scheme donated £189,617 supplying funding for 75 Community Projects across England and Wales. Danny Clarke – aka The Black Gardener – and new National Garden Scheme Ambassador added: “It’s great to see this funding going to the heart of so many community projects. Lawn Watering and Drought Management Lawns need water. Let’s understand the water requirements of your lawn and how wetting agents and drought management products work.

Why do I need to be concerned about moisture levels in my lawn? In times of extended drought, grass reduces the water it supplies to the leaf. It stores water in the roots to keep itself alive. The leaf will turn brown, appearing dead. The plant may be dead, you won’t know for sure until moisture returns to the root zone. If a grass plant had other issues to deal with, such as grub damage, that has reduced its root mass, it may well die in a period of drought as it doesn’t have enough root to retain moisture needed to survive. Drought conditions often result in more lawn weeds and less beneficial soil biology. Some grasses tolerate drought better than others. Failure to provide water when your lawn needs it could result in more issues with weed grasses such as Poa Annua (annual meadow grass) which are better adapted to take advantage of poor conditions. Certain weeds thrive in drought conditions. Not watering your lawn could be making your lawn weed issues worse. As grasses die back, this creates space in your lawn for new weed seeds to settle, ready for germination later. In addition, a number of weed types thrive in drought conditions. One such weed is yarrow. Difficult to control once established in your lawn, yarrow is very challenging to irradicate. Healthy soil biology is essential for a healthy lawn. When moisture levels drop, so does the population of beneficial soil microbes, responsible for breaking down organic matter, excreting nutrients into the soil which benefits your lawn grasses. This breakdown of organic matter also reduces surface thatch. How do wetting agents benefit my lawn?

Not everyone can water or wants to water their lawn. There was a time when all we could do for lawns in times of drought was add water or wait for rain to return. If soil has dried out too much, then often that water struggles to be absorbed into the soil. This is when soil has become hydrophobic and repels moisture. Soil in this condition also struggles to hold on to water and it quickly drains through the soil out of the grass root-zone.

A more modern approach to moisture management involves applications of wetting agents. This technology was developed for golf courses and has now found its way into modern, professional lawncare.

What is a wetting agent and how does it work? A wetting agent is a specialised molecule which is used to reduce the surface tension of water. Surface tension is what forms water into a droplet. The fact that water has a high surface tension can be an issue when we want water to penetrate a surface or spread throughout another material – such as soil. Wetting agents help water penetrate into soil and then hold water in the root zone for longer, reducing water wastage and making any water far more effective for plants. Wetting agents and moisture retaining products can drastically reduce the quantity of water you need to maintain a healthy lawn through periods of drought. Typically, wetting agents come in a liquid form and are applied to your lawn using a sprayer. Some manufacturers supply wetting agents in granular form where the liquid has been applied to a carrier which can then be applied using a spreader. In this format the inert carrier would break down following application, releasing the wetting agent into the soil when water is applied, or it rains. Will wetting agents reduce the cost of watering my lawn? The amount of water you need to apply to your lawn can be significantly reduced through the use of wetting agents. In addition, the time it takes for your lawn to become stressed in a period of drought can be extended and therefore you can start watering later or you may even find that the rain has returned before you need to begin to water. Do wetting agents work if there is no rain? Wetting agents are there to make water more effective for your lawn. Applied in a period of drought they will sit patiently on the surface of the soil waiting for rain to return. When it does, they spring into action, aiding the penetration of that rain into the soil, spreading it laterally and holding it in the root zone for longer. In this way they make even the smallest amount of rainfall more effective. Our rivers are not only beautiful, they provide restorative space for us all and vital habitats for wildlife

What do we see? • A 99.5 % decline in eels in the Arle since the 1960s. • Silt and algal growth – which stops the eggs of all sorts of species taking up the necessary oxygen, and reduces the oxygen available for those that do hatch. • A decline in both species and quantity of wildlife in our rivers -very apparent to those that have lived here a while. • A marked difference in aquatic life above and below settlements without mains drainage. • Sewage, chemicals and pesticides - none of us want this stuff in our local waterways! Winchester City Council has resolved take a far closer interest in what goes into our rivers, and ask agencies to explain what is being done. But we all need to do what we can to help. So, here’s some ideas on how you can make a difference and help clean up our local rivers.

1. Cut back on the water you use from the tap and toilet!! Every drop of tap water used comes from local chalk aquifers - the more we use, the less there is in the aquifer to feed our rivers. Purifying water to drinking standards uses a lot of energy, so using less helps reduce your carbon footprint as well. Actions range from easy to challenging. ‘Shower not bath’ is well known if you want to reduce water consumption but why not set a timer for 5 minutes and/or use an aerator or low-flow shower: power showers increase the volume of water used.

Toilets account for over 35% of all the water used in the home. 2. Change your cleaning habits

Many of you are on ‘private arrangements’ rather than mains drainage but all of us can make simple changes to cleaning regimes to prevent chemicals contaminating our aquifers and rivers. The suggestions below apply especially to those with septic tanks and following them will save money on pump outs as well as benefit water quality but they are also important for those of us on mains drainage. Most obvious of all, use fewer cleaning products - they all have an impact. A lot of grime can be removed with a hot damp cloth. Use toilet fresheners, mild detergents, fabric conditioners and washing powders/liquids in moderation. These can adversely impact the natural bacteriological balance in the septic tank. Use bleach and disinfectants VERY SPARINGLY - bleaches kill friendly bacteria. Use non-biological and less aggressive cleaning products. There are many environmental ranges and even a biodegradable bleach. Look for labelling which shows that products are septic tank

don't dispose of white spirit, varnish, paint thinners, motor oils, petrol, etc down the drain - they will ruin your tank, and will seriously pollute groundwater don’t wash paint brushes in the sink or put brush cleaning liquids into the drains - collect these liquids and dispose of them safely at our local tip; or move to nonsolvent based paints - better for the air you breathe as well don’t connect rainwater drainage pipes from roofs or drains to the septic tank.

3. Garden for water conservation

Rather more fun is to be had in the garden - by engineering levels you can reduce run off - the silt impacts water quality - and retain more water for your plants, as well as providing possible boggy bits, for interest and diversity. You are all, of course, using water butts where you can - not on seedlings though, there’s a risk of fungal disease. To reduce run off and increase retention, grow plants that use less water, and increase permeability - no hard surfacing. Grass is very overrated - it’s good for playing on, and livestock, but a lawn takes a lot of love, effort and chemicals which again will end up in the aquifer.

Alresford Show A Tichborne Park, Alresford

lifetime of visiting the Alresford Agricultural Show has taught me that there are two ways to enjoy a day out at Hampshire’s – and possibly England’s – finest farming show. The first is to enjoy an all action day: turn up at the stunning Tichborne Park on the first Saturday in September and go flat out, hell-for-leather, and do as much as you can. Enjoy a session on the climbing wall, cuddle a beagle, and cheer on the Pony Club relays and Dog Scurry competitions. You can eat and drink your way round the many refreshment stands – perfect for a refuel before you head out for a boogie to the music, brought to you this year once again by the superb Alresford Uke Jam and their friends. And when (and ONLY when) your food has gone down a bit, round things off with a 99 flake on the way out.

The second way to enjoy the Show is more sedate: yes, you arrive early at Tichborne Park, but you stroll in a more leisurely fashion round the ground. You drop in on a stand, shake a few hands, have a cup of something, exchange a friendly insult or two (or ten), and move on to the next one, shaking more hands on the way. Drool over the farm machinery that the dealers

have brought – at huge effort and expense from far and wide. Enjoy the fantastic range of farm produce on show: the livestock (both mundane and exotic), and the arable produce. There’s food and drink to suit a slow day, too, with cheeses, honey, breads and charcuteries, and a huge range of wines and exotic spirits to match. Hampshire Open Studios

Hampshire Open Studios is an annual art trail where the visiting public can meet artists in their homes, studios and galleries free of charge – 20th – 29th August 2022.

ith over 290 venues open this year we are bigger than ever! In the ten days leading up to bank holiday Monday 29th August, visitors can get the opportunity to meet the makers direct and learn more about the work. Our colour catalogue is out from mid July in local stockists or view all the listings online – if you are not sure where to start some mini-trails have been suggested for each area around the county. Visitors can also enter a prize draw to win £100 towards artwork from your favourite Hampshire Open Studios artist. There are a wide variety of venues to see along with every type of art and craft on offer in the region, including painting, sculpture, ceramics, glass, furniture, jewellery and many more. Entry is free and to find your nearest venue check the website or look out for the pink direction arrows that will guide you to the artists’ doors. Some local highlights include the 12 venues you can visit throughout the city of Winchester. Including artist Clare Goodman who is an impressionist artist taking inspiration from light and colour in her landscape paintings. Also at this venue,

new for this year, is Hayward Guitars Workshop showing hand-built instruments. In the city centre you’ll get a warm welcome at riverside studio of artist Deborah Porter in Durngate Terrace. Showing large paintings, small encaustic work and prints for sale, Deborah’s work is abstract expressionistic and gestural. You can also find out more about workshops into art journaling for wellbeing. Heading north to Kingsworthy one of three venues here is artist Emma Lowres with expressive oil paintings of landscapes, seascapes of the countryside and coast of Hampshire and beyond. (Emma is our cover artist for 2022). Nearby is Strange TimesQuest an artist collective set up in January 2020 and continues to provide a positive distraction in these uncertain times. Thirty-six artists complete monthly creative Quests ‘alone, together’ networking just by e-mail. In Martyr Worthy you can visit illustrator Jonathan Chapman who is showing figurative paintings and illustrations of colourful landscapes and cityscapes inspired by Winchester and popular destinations from around the world. At the Light Room in Alresford you can see two exhibitions during Hampshire Open Studios, firstly Salisbury Art Scene (20th – 23rd) followed by Four Contemporary Alresford Artists (25th - 29th August) Gill Grant, Melanie Bliss, Penny Metcalfe and Tobie Jennings. They are exhibiting expressive art inspired by nature, landscape and still-life, working in paint, collage and ceramic.

The Light Room Gallery to stage Botanical Art & Culture Exhibition in Alresford

ick McMillen was at his gigantic drawing board by the window, dabbing intricate charcoal detail onto a harrowing ash hedgerow, when we met in his Hampshire studio some years ago. He was my client. I was there, eager to photograph him and his effervescent wife, Molly, both hard at work — a beautifully introverted artist and craftsman and a celebrated willow weaver and fibre artist.

For Mollie, her creative expression is about the reciprocity of caring for the Earth. “This exhibition is an artistic response to what we have been doing for almost two decades,” she said. Sixteen years ago, in a moody forest not far from Alresford, she first laid eyes on her future husband, Nick. They met on a course about living in harmony with the land. Having known them for years, I can affirm that this talented duo lives this way with integrity and sincerity.

I marvelled at Nick’s exquisite and painstakingly detailed botanical illustrations and at Mollie’s lampshades and baskets, woven from sustainably harvested, local plant fibres, bark and willow. I loved learning about their art. We discovered that we shared a twisted sense of humour and a deep respect for nature – which is how this trinity of artists and upcoming exhibition of fine art were born.

Mollie’s hand-harvested materials are sensitively drawn from the land in her local area in Hampshire. Her year is punctuated by the tree bark harvest in spring, plant fibres in mid-summer and the willow harvest in winter. She nurtures relationships with community members and the environment; her intention being to improve the land, garden or hedgerows while producing beautiful woven pieces from what might have become compost or ash.

“We pass by things all the time,” Nick told me when talking about his lichen and seedpod art works. He literally draws from the land and his botanical illustrations honour his subject matter through his hyper-attention to detail. “I want to preserve those moments of open-mouthed astonishment that exist in nature,” he said as I viewed a drawing of a chestnut tree in decline, breaking itself apart with its own weight and age. Our exhibition is a gentle invitation for people to be curious about nature. Sir David Attenborough said that “no one will protect what they don’t care about, and no one will care about what they have never experienced.” With this in mind, when you drop into the Lightroom in Alresford to see the exhibition, you can experience art fostered from a place of inquisitiveness and deep respect. If it sparks interest or encourages you to notice something new, that would be the greatest compliment.

At the exhibition, you’ll see my work too. I’m Heather Chuter, a fine-art photographer and portrait maker. I have a keen interest in connecting with people. My love of fellow artists and the interesting lives they lead fuels a lot of my work. Many hours spent observing other artists compelled me to turn my lens to create my own interpretations of the communication and spirituality playfully existing between the living natural world and the elements. I created etherial landscapes, brimming with life and energy using double exposures, found objects in the environment and digital layering.

Winchester Heritage Open Days

ow in its seventh year, Winchester Heritage Open Days (HODs) is shaping up to be another fantastic festival packed with tours, behind the scenes, and engaging talks. Heritage Open Days is all about opening doors, exploring local heritage and culture, and connecting with the community.

The Trust is thrilled too to have support again this year from our lead sponsor Winchester College, who will be offering guided tours including visits to the Fellows’ Library and Treasury again. Additionally, we are grateful to Winchester BID, our media partner Hampshire Chronicle, to the heritage sites and individuals putting on events, and to our volunteers. HODs couldn’t happen without them!

This year’s festival takes place 9th-18th September 2022 with events not just in Winchester, but in the surrounding areas too (including Aldershot, Alresford, Alton, Bishop’s Waltham, Hursley, Romsey, Whitchurch and more). And the best part? Every event is FREE to attend. The theme for this year’s festival is "Astounding Inventions", celebrating innovation, pioneers and creativity. Code breaking and brickmaking, weaving in the Roman world and railway engineering; these are just some of the Astounding Inventions topics to be explored. Join Aldershot Military Museum for their series of talks on Rushmoor’s Remarkable Innovations and view the Alexander Observatory. Discover the life of Hampshire born inventor, engineer and campaigner for women’s suffrage, Hertha Ayrton Marks with a performance by Pedlars & Petticoats at the Winchester City Museum. Visit IBM Hursley Park, home to decades of innovation, or take a tour of Farnborough Centrifuge. Whether your interests are medieval or modern, in the everyday experience of people throughout history, technological advances, or courtly clashes, there is an event for you to enjoy. Alresford Rotary News

Successful 10K Run

400 runners turned out on a perfect day for running at the final Hampshire Road Race League race of the season, the Alresford Rotary 10k. The course followed the usual route through the market town, past the famous watercress beds and out into the countryside beyond. It’s a tough course with plenty of hills, but all the runners proved up for the challenge. The men’s race was won by for the second year in a row by Phil Berntsen in 33 minutes and 32 seconds, closely followed by Sebastian Hoenig in 33:51.

supported by local businesses: Prospect Fencing funded the race numbers, The Watercress Company provided 500 bags of local watercress, Becky Shotton Driving Instructor sponsored the medals, Chocolate Craft provided the chocolate medals for the children’s races and boxes of chocolates for the adult races, The Arlebury Cafe baked 500 special cookies and made up hampers of local goodies for the age category winners, Fyffes supplied the bananas, Charters Estate Agents allowed the use of their sign boards for the kilometre markers, Hair Art helped out with the art work and signage, and The Bottom Line Accounting contributed towards the prizes for the age category winners. Thomas Miller designed the logo for the race. The event was marshalled by volunteers from Alresford Rotary and additional help at the field was provided by enthusiastic students from Perins school. Everyone gave their time for free and all profits will be used for local and international good causes, including providing medical supplies to Ukraine, part of a global effort by Rotary International.

The women’s race was won by Victoria Gill in 36:56 with Tamsin Anderson second in 37:52. All of the results are available at eventchiptiming.com Three children’s races preceded the main event, with children between 2 and 11 running different distances around the park. The winners received specially made chocolate medals from Chocolate Craft in Alresford, and everyone got a special medal for finishing. The race was the 15th annual event organised by Alresford Rotary and

The race organisers made new efforts this year to reduce waste and improve sustainability. All of the prizes were from local sources and the race medals were wooden and made from sustainable wood. Water was in containers and recyclable cups with no single use plastic. Competitors were encouraged to car share, walk or take public transport. Next year’s race will again be on the third Sunday in June (Fathers’ Day), June 18th.

Eel House Open Day

On July 17th an eager group of Rotarians ran the open day at this unique local

attraction. It proved a popular way for local residents and visitors to get a glimpse into the amazing life cycle of the eel. Eels start and end their life in the Sargasso Sea near Bermuda but find their way up the Arle river to Alresford where they spend most of their life. The recent renovation (part funded by Rotary Donations and organised by the Town Trust) has brought the 1822 built Eel House back into splendid working order. Don’t miss one of next year’s open days.

Wessex Rotary Shoebox Scheme Make an early start to preparing Christmas shoeboxes of gifts for disadvantaged and displaced children in eastern Europe. Local schools who supported the scheme last year are being contacted but it is not just a scheme for schools. New Alresford Town Council Outdoor Gym

Last month, we were delighted to see the opening of our new outdoor gym, located on the upper part of Arlebury Park. A new surface has been installed on the Petanque pitch at Arlebury Park. This is a lovely facility which is used all year round by a local group but is open to all. Boule games have an exceptionally long history dating back to the Middle

Community Infrastructure Levy -CIL

Anti-Social behaviour The council is still experiencing anti-social behaviour in the Recreation Grounds. If you see anyone defacing public or private property or leaving litter that could be damaging for other users, please let us know so that the Police can be updated. Ash dieback

This levy allows local planning authorities to raise funds from developers who are undertaking new building projects in their area. The funds go towards infrastructure that is needed to support growth. This year there were twelve community bids submitted to WCC, the value of which exceeded the CIL funding available. Of the twelve bids, seven were recommended for CIL funding. I am pleased to write that New Alresford was successful and will be recommended for the allocation of funding to Cabinet in September. It is hoped that with this funding NATC will be able to provide additional new allotments in the future.

This is a fungal disease affecting the common ash tree (Fraxinus excelsior) and other Fraxinus species. It is caused by a fungus called Hymenoscyphus fraxineus which is native to eastern Asia. Unfortunately, there are affected trees within the Parish.

A survey has been booked to inspect twenty-four trees that have been identified as being diseased in the public open spaces, that might be in need of attention. The disease causes leaf loss and crown dieback and is usually fatal in younger trees whereas mortality in older trees is more often associated with the combined impact of root pathogens such as the honey fungus (Armillaria mellea). Add the lemon juice and zest and whisk well. Pour the lemon cream mixture into six serving glasses. Refrigerate for three hours before serving. Serve with a shortbread biscuit or macaroon. Ciao Jane

Age UK shop in Alresford calls for more people to join the 2022 Challenge as the appeal hits halfway mark Age UK’s 2022 Challenge, which is raising vital funds to support older people, has reached its halfway mark and is on track to meet its target after seeing unprecedented levels of donations to its Charity shops. However, with the weather warming up, the Age UK shop in Alresford is issuing a plea to the local community to have a clear out of their winter wardrobes and continue donating their unwanted items so that its shelves will be fully stocked for the Autumn,. The 2022 Challenge aims to help Age UK’s charity shops receive 2.2 million bags of donations by the end of the year. The Charity is turning every bag into more support for older people, with items sold on to be loved again and funds raised going towards services such as Age UK’s Advice Line and its Telephone Friendship Services.

Six months after launching the 2022 Challenge, Age UK has received over 1.1million bags of donations from across the UK, but the challenge isn’t over - the Age UK shop in Alresford is urging people to continue supporting the appeal. Shop Manager at the Age UK shop in Alresford said; “We are so grateful to the generous community of Alresford for the amount and variety of donations we have received since Age UK’s 2022 Challenge launched. It’s great that we’re on track at this halfway mark, but we don’t lose momentum and that’s why we are asking people to continue to bring us their good-quality, unwanted items. “With the summer now upon us and many of us putting away our winter wardrobes, there has never been a better time to have a clear out and bag up the items you no longer need. And thanks also to the Town Council for its additional contribution. As with so many things, Covid caused a major hiatus in our activities but the cinema is now back and fundraising continues.

Work to restore the face of the town clock on the tower at St John’s has been completed, and very splendid it looks. These photos rather speak for themselves! In the centre of the dial is shown the year 1811, when the clock was installed by the Bailiff and Burgesses (effectively, the Town Council of the day), thanks to money raised by public appeal. Now, over two hundred years later, in 2022, the Friends of St John’s have funded the latest restoration and refurbishment of the clock face.

It’s so unhealthy - both physically and mentally” Val Anne Lee, poet and author, has lived in and around New Alresford for fifteen years. Her popular and much-loved children’s books ‘On the Banks of Hatchet Pond’ and ‘Podge goes Splodge at Hatchet Pond’ feature Podge, an ugly old frog who wishes he could fly, and Dizzy a beautiful little dragonfly who flits around Hatchet Pond in the New Forest. Humour figures largely in most of Val’s work although she says “To be honest, I didn’t have much to laugh about in those early days but my crazy sense of humour kept me sane”. Dedicated ‘For Cat Lovers Everywhere’ this crazy adventure story features a once-scrawny tatty-eared farm cat who by chance taps a boring old stone and gains magical powers, becoming totally humanised and taking his young owner and her family and friends on amazing and hair-raising adventures which vastly improve many lives.....even those of two nasty young village bullies! Many of Val’s words touch on current topics...for example she speaks boldly for the ‘Gingers’ of this world in her description of their “lovely richlycoloured hair which shines in the sunlight like burnished gold”, Val says her mother and two of her sister were auburn-haired - hence these words. The book also has its young characters enjoying the outdoor life....swinging on ropes dangling over rivers, collecting conkers, daring to skate on frozen ponds and borrowing a metal

detector to dig for treasure and more.. At the time of writing, CHARLEY has yet to be released - having been kept in lockdown for the duration of Covid. However, subject to on-going negotiation with Anthony Oxley the owner of New Alresford’s prestigious bookshop Laurence Oxley’s, CHARLEY is soon to be launched.. In addition to her published and so-farunpublished portfolio of more than a dozen children’s stories, Val also writes for adults... mostly humorous poems based on everyday ‘gripes’. She says “My family think I’m slightly eccentric because I have a poem for every occasion and can give a recitation from memory ‘at the drop of a hat’.....such titles as ‘Stinky Old Billy’ the old goat once in her reluctant ownership with other animals - horses, bantams, pigs, fluffy white rabbits which often escaped their hutches to breed with the wild ones in the fields beyond. In addition, when left to singly support her family of three kids, an added responsibility was the young calf which had been left tied to a plum tree! Apple Watch and Apple Pay In 2021 Apple sold a staggering 46 million Apple Watches. The year they introduced the watch in 2015, they sold just over 8 million. So, an impressive sales increase in 7 years. It has changed quite a bit since the first model with many useful features especially the fitness and health apps. It is now an important member of the Apple family of products. Before a recent trip away, I decided to add Apple Pay to my watch, the current Series 7. I am glad that I did as it has proved to be a secure and convenient way to pay for anything that you would use a card for. It is almost exactly the same as using it on the iPhone and you will need to use the iPhone to set up Apple Pay on the watch as they work in tandem. To do this open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone, tap on My Watch, then tap Wallet & Apple Pay; if you have cards on your other Apple devices tap Add next to the card you would like to add and then enter the card’s CVV. Once installed you do not need to even have the iPhone with you as the cards are registered inside the app on the watch. COMMUNITY Jackie’s County Corner for August I have received several complaints right across the division about cancelled bus services which leave residents stranded, and so I have raised this with Stagecoach and HCC. It seems that they will only announce cancellations on Twitter, which is completely unsatisfactory. The County Council has recorded their disappointment that that they were not successful in receiving any Bus Back Better funding. The original BBB fund was announced as £3bn, then cut back to just £1.4bn, resulting in only 31 of 79 bids being successful. Add to this, the pressure on commercial services at present: Covid, shortage of passengers and shortage of drivers are playing their part in this. This puts considerable pressure on the County’s transport discretionary funding which includes a taxi run-bus services, CANGO, community bus grants and support for smaller link buses such as the 95 and the 240. However, good news: HCC received a flood aid grant of over £0.74m, which included Phase 1 of the Outer Winchester scheme. HCC claimed an additional sum of £0.243

Every year, around 55,000 women and 370 men in the UK have their lives turned upside down by a breast cancer diagnosis. In 2007 I experienced this first hand when I was told I had the disease. Nearly five years after I finished treatment I was diagnosed with secondary (metastatic) breast cancer which had spread to my liver. Secondary breast cancer can be treated but cannot be cured. I’ve worked with the charity Breast Cancer Now for a long time because they’ve been with me right from the start. That’s why

A new County Executive (Cabinet) has just been formed, and so I am afraid the pressure to get this right for all residents both in Kings Barton and across the north of Winchester has started anew with correspondence and a conversation with the new Exec Member, Cllr Heron. Over £400,000 donated as ReNature Festival kicks into action

ore than £400,000 has been raised so far to help find new spaces for nature in the South Downs National Park.

Exactly one year on from the launch of the ReNature campaign and the fundraising tally continues to rise for the inspiring initiative, which is looking to create an extra 13,000 hectares of habitat where plants and animals can thrive. Following a “Call for Nature Sites” plea to landowners and community groups last autumn, 59 projects are now being progressed with a view to creating new wildlife habitat. They include entire farms, fields, road verges and old quarries, covering thousands of hectares. Meanwhile, this month an exciting ReNature festival will take place from 16 to 24 July with the aim of encouraging people to do simple things to help nature thrive, such as picking up litter, creating a wild space in your garden or helping to survey wildlife. Activities will include a microvolunteering beach clean at Seven Sisters, a heathland discovery day and bookable guided walks, as well as a range of inspiring online videos. As part of the festival, a selection of community groups, including those serving young people and those who may never have accessed the National Park, are being sent ReNature packs, crammed with nature-based goodies and activities. The public are also being invited to take three “pledges” and share images on social media for the chance to win a day-out at a wildlife venue (Marwell Zoo, RSPB Pulborough Brooks and Arundel Wetland Centre) in the National Park. They will be invited to: Experience nature – share an image of you in the natural world, whether it be the National Park, your local park, or garden! Care for nature – share an image of you looking after nature, such as planting wildflowers or picking up litter. Share the caring for nature message with others (by sharing your images on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram and using hashtag #ReNature) Andrew Lee, Director of Countryside Policy and Management for the South Downs National Park, said: “It’s been a hugely encouraging start to the ReNature campaign and I’d like to

thank each and every farmer, estate, community group and business that has pledged to support it. I think it underlines just how much people cherish nature. “It’s still very early stages, but we’re working with a diverse range of projects that will eventually create new areas for nature in the National Park. It’s a very exciting notion that within ten years new areas could be teeming with wildlife and increasing the biodiversity of the region. None of this nature recovery work would be possible without the farmers and estates that make up a very significant portion of the National Park – and these land managers will continue to play a pivotal role as we move forward. I’d like to thank all those who have been involved so far for their enthusiasm for the project and look forward to forging new links in the years to come. “There’s obviously a lot more work to do and much more fundraising to be done, but we’re determined to help reverse biodiversity loss. Nature can thrive anywhere given the right support and we can all work together to make a real difference.” The South Downs National Park currently has 25 per cent of the land managed specifically for nature, such as nature reserves, woods, heaths, ponds and flower-rich road verges. The additional 13,000 hectares would bring this to 33 per cent of land managed for nature – going beyond current UN-backed conservation targets of “30 per cent by 2030” (30 for 30). The National Park Authority also wants to go one step further – ensuring that the remaining 67 per cent of the National Park is nature-friendly by 2030. The South Downs National Park Trust, the official charity for the National Park, has been leading on the fundraising and has an ambitious target of raising £100m over the next decade to help nature recovery. Joshua Esan, Engagement and Events Officer for the National Park, said: “We hope everyone can get involved in our festival this month. Each day will focus on a different habitat of the National Park, such as woodland, coast or chalk grassland, and there’ll be lots of interesting things to see, do and learn about. EDUCATION Adam King, Headmaster Elect at Prince’s Mead School The Governors are delighted to welcome Adam King as the Headmaster of Prince’s Mead School from September 2022. In September 2021, it was announced that Peter Thacker was stepping down to become Headmaster of Bishopsgate School after 4 years of outstanding leadership at Prince’s Mead. After 13 years of Headship at Thorngrove School, Highbury, Adam is relocating to Winchester to lead this vibrant and adventurous Prep School & Nursery. He was previously House Master at Giggleswick School in the Yorkshire Dales and St Faith’s School in Cambridge.

In his spare time, Adam enjoys running (he has run a couple of London marathons and a few half-marathons), walking and cooking. Although his playing days are over, he supports Bath Rugby Club and enjoys watching them at the Recreation Round in Bath. Adam loves the theatre, whether it’s regional or West End and also enjoys going to the ballet at Covent Garden and Sadler’s Wells. Adam and his family are very much looking forward to moving down to Winchester and making the most of living in such a beautiful city, as well as the surrounding countryside. We are delighted to have made an exceptional appointment for our new Head at Prince’s Mead School. Adam extends a warm welcome to every new family that will be joining Prince’s Mead in the coming year. Prince’s Mead is a thriving independent preparatory day school for 300 boys and girls set in a beautiful site in Winchester, Hampshire. The school is a forward-thinking yet traditional school with a strong family ethos and an excellent reputation. Housed in an impressive Grade II Georgian building, with spectacular panoramic views over the Itchen Valley, the School offers an imaginative, allround education.

In 2004, he took up the post of Deputy Head at Thorngrove and was appointed as its Head, five years later. He has been Headmaster at Thorngrove School, in Highclere, ever since. As well his day job, he is also a Compliance and Educational Quality Inspector for ISI, on the Academic Committee for the Independent Schools Examinations Board and the Secretary of the Independent Association of Preparatory Schools District 10 Committee. He finds these additional roles interesting, fulfilling and enjoyable and feels that in many ways they support his role as a Head by giving

him fresh ideas and challenging him to be the best person (and Head) that he can be.
