regularly host doctors who are undergoing their specialist GP training. Prior to starting the GP Specialist Training Programme a doctor will usually have worked in a number of different hospital departments gaining skills, knowledge and experience. The GP training programme takes 3 years and during the first two years of this a GP trainee will undertake placements in a number of different medical specialties including a six month placement in a GP surgery. The final year of the training programme takes place in a different practice where the trainee (or Registrar as they are known) will use the knowledge and experience they have already have to gain the particular skills of a GP. We are very pleased to introduce our new cohort of trainee GPs, Dr John Foreman, Dr Gabriella Bentley & Dr. Alice Maidwell-Smith.

Winchester Councillors Report

The Cost of Living

We are already seeing the effect of increases in the cost of almost everything, and this will not improve in the short term. Energy costs will increase dramatically as temperatures fall when we move into autumn. Poorer households can end up paying a huge percentage of their income on heating and lighting. (The definition of fuel poverty is when the household is spending more than 10% of their income on energy.) The number of such households is becoming larger.

There are people living in our towns and villages that will have to choose between eating and heating this year. Being in receipt of any benefit will open the doors to further support, so check if you are eligible, it doesn't take long and you may be happily surprised, https://www.gov.uk/benefitscalculators

We know that many of those that are hard up may not have access to online help. The Citizens Advice Bureau provide help and advice 0808 278 7861

Insulate Your Home

Grants for Fully funded home insulation are available. If your household income is less than 30k pa or you receive any means tested benefit, and you live in a house with an EPC rating E/F/G, please consider applying. Keeping warm is essential to your health. Older people’s physiology makes them less able to maintain their correct body temperature. Check your EPC rating at https://www.gov.uk/find-energy-certificate Check if you are eligible at https://www. warmerhomes.org.uk/eligibility

Public Loos, Inconvenient

Regrettably the Ladies Loos in the Alresford public toilets will be out of commission for some more weeks. Drains below the floor need to be taken up and replaced. This involves breaking into the tiled and concreted floor, neither a quick nor easy task.

We are also investing to improve the standards of the public toilets run by WCC, in both the short and long term. Discussions are going on with the external contractor, responsible for cleaning and minor maintenance in regard to the quality of their work. For longer term improvements, The British Association of Public Conveniences has completed an assessment of all eleven of the facilities belonging to WCC and will be providing a report very soon. The WCC Estates Team is commissioning full condition surveys of the buildings of all eleven facilities for underlying problems. These are located in the market towns as well as in the city. From these two studies an improvement programme and costs will be produced. Our aging population as well as visitors deserve good modern conveniences.

Make it Rain!

This is Magic! By writing this article in mid-August, asking you to save as much water as possible, and encouraging you keep us, our animals and wildlife safe by not using BBQs or lighting bonfires, when so many plants are tinder dry, we may ensure significant rain by the end of August. Rain dancing would help as well, could our creative arts sector help?

No idling

It is extraordinary how frequently one sees car drivers sitting with their engines running whilst parked up. Even more get into their cars, start the engine, fiddle with the satnav/ mobile phone and then buckle their seat belts and finally after five minutes pull away. Petrol is close to £2 a litre! Add those five minutes of idling up and how many litres have you burned off in a year for absolutely no purpose? Worth thinking about as you burn money and pump out a poison gas into your environment!
