Is there ever a good time to bathe the dog? Claws clenched, soap suds scattered, threats thundered and suddenly your beloved pride and joy turns from the weight of a miniature dachshund to the lumbering load of a Great Dane. And yet the arrival of guests is always a harbinger of bad tidings - for furry-coated, four-footed friends, that is, with an inbuilt dislike of any body of water that doesn’t resemble a muddy puddle.
It begins with a whisper, a mere baby’s breath upon the wind. The unsuspecting canine is stretched out blissfully unaware of the endless hoovering, cleaning, dusting and its own contribution to the general aroma that is tolerable for family though evidently insufferable for guests, distinguished or otherwise.
But an atmosphere is brewing. Maybe it's the anticipation before the battle, or perhaps it's the slightly too cheerful tone with which the dog’s name is called. The family is poised, one at every exit point, bent double, hands on knees and faces fixed with an expression that would wilt even the most hardened Sunday side rugby player. The canine is cornered.
The hound knows when it is being hunted. Escape is impossible but suddenly the gap under the sofa provides the perfect sanctuary. The battle lines have been drawn; mongrel against mortal.
There is a certain kind of indignity that all dog owners are exposed to with downright alarming regularity. Bath time is no exception. Scuba diving under one’s sofa to retrieve the family pet is not what anyone signed up for and such skills were certainly never mentioned at the adoption agency. Nutritional facts and figures must be able to be quoted backwards and high visibility dog collars must be purchased and yet the willingness to stand out in the rain to allow for a canine comfort break, to fill every jacket and coat pocket with scented small bags and to perfect one’s ability to throw sticks perfectly was never discussed.
Green eyes glint dangerously under the sofa and a low growl omits from the void. Pound coins are pocketed favourably and crumbs are pushed aside. Slowly one hand is extended and with it a bribe - a handful of salty dog chews, as pungent as the aroma due to be addressed. The canine is not stupid and yet a moment’s distraction is all the advantage an experienced dog owner needs. A vice-like grip is swiftly tightened around the dog’s collar. Slowly the extradition process begins.
Cheers like those for a sporting hero shooting the winning goal erupt in the household. The battle has been won but the war is far from over. Mutinous curses and threats are projected from the captured pup. The indignity has
switched from hunter to hunted. Perhaps there is such a thing as retribution.
Each step towards the bathtub becomes increasingly difficult as the hound lowers its centre of gravity and weighs heavier, fidgeting restlessly in your arms. If the dog had any doubt as to its impending fate then the instruments of torture laid out in the bathroom were enough to convince her that any chance of clemency was well and truly without real foundation. Instruments of torture in the form of the fluffiest towel the family owned, the most expensive dog shampoo the pet shop could sell and more than a handful of dog treats.
But to the family dog, stripped of all hope and ready to descend into despair, there was but one solution. Howl! Perhaps it was a final farewell to all the dogs in the neighbourhood, perhaps it was a tribute to Sydney Carton, ‘A far far wetter thing I…’
The moment had arrived. One paw, two paws, three paws and a tail and before too long, you have a wet dog and a death warrant on your hands, all in the name of sweetening the aroma for the guests. By this time, both dog and assigned dog washer are unified in the mutual dislike of said guests and the disruption they have caused, albeit unwittingly. Do curtains really need washing for afternoon tea guests? Does the dog really need a claw inspection complete with a shampoo and set?
Hope can be a cruel mistress. There is a moment of misplaced triumph when the drone of the shower is silenced and the flow of water abruptly stops. The hound looks heartened, forgetful of the next stage of this journey into hell. The drying process. To towel dry and risk unbelievable frizz or to painstakingly use the hair dryer on a constant cool shot? The options are limited but so is the time before the guests arrive. A quick towel dry and a gentle blast with the dryer it is then.
Finally, not before time, the dog is released from its watery prison and allowed to have a mad half hour, skidding into every family member to give an excited greeting and to showcase the flowy locks of newly washed fur. Life is good for the four-footed member of the family. For the rest of the household, the troubles are far from over. Time to count the casualties.
A quick glance out the window reveals the figures of the early guests arriving up the path. Could peace not last for even a moment? Panicked shouts from the kitchen answer otherwise ‘Quick! Get the paper towels! That damned dog!’ Maybe the mongrel won the war after all.
Written by Mica BaleHappy Kitchens have a unique approach when it comes to kitchens and custom spaces in the home. We use excellent quality materials which are fitted by exshipwright joiners, who used to fit the woodwork on Super Yachts. That in itself is unique in our industry but then add in the fact that we are bespoke, but don’t charge the inflated prices that your highend high street showrooms do, gives us the recipe for your perfect home solution. This is why we are one of the highest rated home improvement companies on HOUZZ, beating all the top names you might recognise when walking down your high street.
We have never had less than a 5 star
review and have won the HOUZZ best of service award every year since it has been running. The staff at HOUZZ reference us to other companies as to how customer service should be done. Many of our customers have used us 2 or 3 times due to moving house or tackling other projects in their existing houses.
We do not have a template for design and take a fresh approach with every customer. It is important to take all the best ideas a customer has, then bring in the experience we have to offer, and often our ideas will be completely different to any other companies as we are innovative and bespoke. We often hear that customers have had designs and quotes that all look the same, are boring and
un-exciting, yet expensive. This is because most high street ‘kitchen designers’ are just salespeople with no idea on how a kitchen works.
So whether you need an amazing Kitchen, Utility, Bedroom, coffee bar with custom pod storage, Office, Media wall or Living Room storage we can help. The design visits are free of charge, and we can quote on the same day. Also Ben loves design, so often at no extra charge, he will help you choose paint colours, light fittings, Bar stools, artwork and can even recommend great pots and pans.

Our customers will often use us again, and recommend us to Family and Friends. The quote from the review above was from a customer who has chosen us twice, and their parents also have a Happy Kitchen, and two of the parents' friends.
“HappyKitchens.WOWWOW WOW.Thankyousomuchforgiving usthewowfactorweaskedfor.”
The McAdams – June 21
The biggest compliment we get from our customers is always around our attention to detail and often bringing something completely different to the table. If you are still unsure after reading this, go and read some of our reviews on our Happy Kitchens Houzz profile, and do a search of kitchen companies on there by review rating, we are always close to the top of the list.
Out-of-the-box thinking, bespoke design features, and friendly staff with excellent attention to detail are just a few of the reasons you should call us today. If that isn’t enough please do remember that the design visit is free of charge, so you have nothing to lose.

We are all looking forward to spending time with family and friends to celebrate the coronation of King Charles on Saturday 6th May. There will be events galore going on in individual streets and neighbourhoods over the bank holiday weekend, presenting an opportunity to come together as a community to have some fun.
Following a busy run up to the Coronation weekend, the hard-working team at Hellards are looking forward to some time off to join in the festivities. Once the celebrations are over and the bunting has been put away, we’ll be back at work doing what we do best – selling and letting homes in this beautiful part of Hampshire.
If you are considering a move this year and would like some advice from one of our friendly team, please feel free to pop in for a chat. We may even be able to offer you a slice of cake with your cup of tea!
The alarming headlines and figures over house price growth do not necessarily accurately reflect the levels of activity that we and other agents are seeing in our area.
There are good enquiries and increasing buyer confidence, and despite the Bank of England raising the rates some of the large lenders have lowered them.
If buyers and sellers can tune out the negative noise and keep in mind that purchasing a house is a long-term investment with the
inevitable short-term fluctuations, then they will likely benefit from an expected upward trend over the next five to ten years. Whilst a proactive, pragmatic and patient approach is required in the current market, an experienced estate agent will navigate it to ensure the very best outcome for you!

As we say goodbye to the Snowdrop gardens, and a very successful ’Snowdrop Festival’ we now prepare for the newly emerging Spring flowers in our gardens, and the plethora of gardens to choose from to visit, in Hampshire, during the coming months.
Nationwide the National Garden Scheme have over 3,500 gardens opening their garden gates to the general public. Here in Hampshire we have eighty-nine gardens listed, with around twenty others who are part of the Village Group openings, the likes of Amport & Monxton, Crawley, Froyle, Headley (NEW) , Romsey and Stockbridge. These gardens are great value for money, with one payment covering several gardens. We are really pleased to welcome Headley Gardens (GU35 8PW) for 2023, and hope they have a very successful year. Every visit by the general public to one of our gardens, equates to more funds raised for our very deserving beneficiaries. To view all our beneficiaries visit ngs. org.uk and check out Beneficiaries.

Educating boys and girls from 6 months to Sixth Form
St Swithun’s is a school that places a large focus on its mental health and wellbeing provisions, and this was recently honoured when the school celebrated achieving the School Mental Health Award.
This award delivered by the Carnegie Centre of Excellence for Mental Health in Schools, was the highest level, gold standard, and was in recognition for the school’s outstanding mental health and wellbeing provision.
The school provides a wide range of initiatives to enhance the wellbeing of pupils and staff, with a key element of the support for pupils being the bespoke and unique Positive Education programme which focuses on feeling good, doing good and functioning well. Led by clinical psychologist, Dr. O’Connor, alongside Mr Graham Yates (pastoral deputy head) it is an evidence-based approach to wellbeing, character development and enhancing academic achievement that not only seeks to alleviate and prevent mental health challenges but builds the resilience and
mental toughness the pupils need to be the best they can be. All pupils have access to a bespoke student wellbeing website created and updated by the school and a wellbeing hub, an online portal with a range of resources and advice available to support pupils, parents, and staff.
The Positive Education programme also incorporates a five-week course for parents which helps strengthen the link between school and home and supports parents in helping their children to thrive. Other elements of wellbeing are routinely shared through parent talks, the parent portal, and The Wellbeing Hub.
A key element of achieving the Gold Award is the degree to which good practice is shared in the wider community to support others. Dr O’Connor and Mr Yates have presented the wellbeing programme at national teacher conferences, to members of the NHS and to over 20 Prep school headteachers last year, as well as publishing articles in the national arena.
St Swithun’s deputy head pastoral, Graham Yates said: “Offering outstanding pastoral care to our pupils is at the heart of what we do at St Swithun’s. We aim to create an
environment in which all girls can flourish, whatever their unique tapestry of strengths and interests.”
“Students and staff know that there is a co-ordinated and effective support system in place alongside a commitment to pupil safety with a strong safeguarding culture.”
St Swithuns’s head, Jane Gandee added: “It is a huge credit to everyone involved in the school that we have received this award. The wellbeing of our pupils is our primary concern, and we believe that girls who are happy, healthy, and resilient are much more likely to achieve their goals and aspirations.”
The award was established in 2017 by the Carnegie Centre of Excellence for Mental Health in Schools – part of Leeds Beckett University – and social enterprise Minds Ahead.

'Probably mid Hampshire’s Quiz of the Year' lived up to its 'modest' billing, selling out with more than six weeks to go before it took place on 31st March and in the wonderful surroundings of Itchen Abbas and Avington Village Hall, all present made good use of the bar, enjoyed lasagne from Soles Butchers and generously supported the evening’s raffle, hoping to win one of the five prizes, each worth at least £50. In addition to a hamper of food and drink prepared by Becky Smith of the Arlebury Café, raffle prizes were kindly donated by Nony Kerr-Smiley, an independent freelance estate agent (supporting Alresford businesses Suzie Watson, the Toy Box and Wild Bunch), and IVC - 'Cars chosen with care'.
The quiz questions were testing with “Ferrets Forever” coming through on the rails by playing their Joker (for double points) in the final round to amass a total of 72 points out of 90 and defeat Abraca-Tabrah by 2 points. A separate Table Top quiz was won by the Downers. “A good time was had by all” and most importantly more than £1600 was raised for Rotary’s support of the humanitarian relief endeavours in Ukraine.
This year’s road race will start at 10.00 a.m. at Arlebury Park on Sunday 18th June. The main event will be preceded by a children’s fun run for those aged up to 11 years old. At this time of year, we begin to venture out into our gardens more often and become aware of how our lawns have coped over the winter months. We see plenty of lawn issues, lets take a look at what can be done.
Healthy soil needs air spaces within it. Roots don’t grow in the soil; they grow in the gaps within. Gradually, over time, through regular use of your garden your lawn is likely to become compacted. Areas where your lawn is walked on more often are likely to show signs of poor grass growth and more often than not, this is due to the compaction below the surface. You’ll see this more often close to washing lines, the entrance to gates or where you have to walk over the lawn to access another area in your garden. It may be tempting to scatter grass seed on the surface, but unless the compaction issue is addressed, that new seed is going to struggle to establish as there is no space in the soil for its roots.
Compromised root development means the grass has limited access to moisture and nutrition, meaning compromised grass growth. In addition, the roots are responsible for a gaseous exchange with the atmosphere, without which your grass will be less healthy and more susceptible to disease and pest issues. If you want a lawn to be proud of, deal with the compaction in your lawn. Aeration of the lawn, at least annually, should make up part of your lawn care plan.
Since Covid lock-down, there are many more lawn owners that are now also dog owners. That increase in dog ownership has seen an increase of dog related lawn damage. The most common of which is scorching, and bare patches caused by dog urine. Urine is high in nitrogen. Used correctly, nitrogen is an essential lawn nutrient and good for your grass. As anyone who has spilt lawn fertiliser on their grass will know, a concentration of nitrogen will kill grass. And this is what we are seeing with dog urine burns. The high concentration of nitrogen burns the grass and then the lower concentration around the edge creates a halo of lush growth – great for drawing attention to the unsightly burn!
The best way to deal with this is prevention. If you can train your dog to pee elsewhere then that’s ideal. If not, try flushing the area with water after your pet has relieved itself. This isn’t always practical,
and you may need to adopt strategies to repair these bare areas. Raking, spiking, and seeding is a good way forward. Another great tip is to grow some small plant pots of soil and grass seed. When the burns appear, you can dig out the area, using an empty plant pot as a template and then pop the new grass in to fill the gap.
There are two main groups of insects that cause lawn issues – leather jackets and chafer grubs. Both live in the soil, both eat the grass plant, both cause major, unsightly damage. The pesticide used to control these insects has been withdrawn and therefore we are seeing increased numbers. Turf growers are struggling to supply pest-free turf and we see major problems in lawns that have been recently re-laid. To avoid this problem, if you are thinking of replacing your lawn, it’s far better to establish it from seed than to bring in new turf and possibly bring in lawn destroying insects too. Check with a lawncare professional if you suspect insect damage issues and they will be able to advise the best way forward.
All living things need the right nutrition to remain healthy. Your lawn is no different. Without the correct seasonal nutrition, grass growth may be weak and the plants more susceptible to pests and diseases. In addition, regular weed and moss control will ensure your lawn looks its best all year long. Many lawn owners, who choose to apply their own lawn treatments, soon realise that shop-bought products are often not as effective as they would like. In addition, they tend to be expensive and don’t come in pack sizes to fit the size of your lawn – resulting in a shed full of part used boxes of ineffective products. It’s important not to under or over-dose a lawn, so the right applicator should be used, and that applicator should be calibrated too. Many people realise that the convenience and value offered by professional lawn treatments far outweighs shop bought alternatives and guarantees a beautiful lawn you can be proud of all year.

This was set up in 2015 supported by the Alresford PIGS and a number of other community groups. Eight Automatic External Defibrillator machines were purchased and installed in cabinets locked via a keypad around Alresford and Old Alresford. These are now located at the Community Centre, The ARC, Stratton Bates Fields, Mitford Road, the Infant School, Linnetts Road, the Bowls Club and Old Alresford Green. There are also additional independent units located at Long Barn, Signal House, Perins School, The Golf Club and Hartog Dental Practice.
The readiness of the units and battery status are checked every month by volunteers. This information is then forwarded to the Community HeartBeat Trust, who support the scheme and have registered the machines with the Ambulance service. This provides the ambulance service with a regular update on a machine's status and ensures that a member of the public is sent to a publicly accessible and available machine.
These units have already been deployed on a number of occasions with success. No previous training is needed to operate these units which give active audio and visual guidance.
The most important thing to do in the event of collapse or suspected heart attack is to call 999.
This will enable the emergency services to ….
1. Activate an ambulance to your location.
2. Give you support over the phone.
3. Tell you where the nearest in-service AED is located and provide the access code for that machine.
The ambulance service will give you the keypad access code: unlock the cabinet and obtain the AED, plus the associated bag of equipment, like scissors etc.
It is important that you do not leave the patient - so send someone to collect the AED. But only after calling 999 to get support and the correct code (only released if you are with the patient).
This defibrillator scheme is run by volunteers… if you are interested in helping with AED checks or fundraising then please contact Peter Stokes on 07775 434 980.
We are pleased to announce that at the end of May a new mini timber trail will be installed at Arlebury Park playground, following consultation on
two designs with residents of the town. This will replace the current timber trail that is now past its best. At the same time rubber matting will be installed around the eight pieces of equipment at the outdoor gym.
New turfing and re-seeding work will take place at Stratton Bates Recreation Ground towards the end of the April. For a short period, the mound will be closed to allow the turf to take.
Unfortunately, the mini A frame climber at Sun Hill Recreation Ground has had to be removed due to rotting.

Residents in Hampshire can nominate a good cause to receive £1,000 as part of Benefact Group’s Movement for Good Awards. Now in its fifth year, the Movement for Good Awards will once again see more than £1million gifted to charities up and down the UK and Ireland.
Since the awards began, people in Hampshire have submitted over 55,100 nominations and 70 Hampshire based charities have benefited from valuable donations. While the pandemic and the current economic climate has had an adverse effect on cash donations, the amount of people choosing to volunteer their time for a good cause is rising1. From today, Hampshire residents can give a minute to nominate a charity online at www.movementforgood.com.
The Movement for Goods Awards has gifted over £4million to charities in the UK and Ireland since the initiative started. Winners will be drawn at random and the more times a charity is nominated the more chance it has of being selected. 150 winning charities will be announced from 1 June,
Easter weekend was busy in Broad Street! The French Market returned on Easter Sunday, and enjoyed the best weather of the Easter weekend, with sun shining on a variety of fabulous French foods. Easter Monday brought more challenging weather, but the Museum and Norman Bridge Open Days still had more than 200 visitors in just a couple of hours.
If you weren’t able to visit in April, you have two more chances in May, as our Open Day season has now begun. Both will be open from 12 noon on the Bank Holidays on 1st May and 29th May.
The Museum has a fascinating local Victorian horse-drawn Fire Engine, with brilliantly polished brass - along with all sorts of historic items from the Town, such as dolls and toys made in the town by Alresford Crafts, local archeological finds, postcards and pictures. It's April 1940 and Jocasta, Daphne and Dotty, will have to move from their school in idyllic Little Inkling, Sussex, to Buckinghamshire, where they will take refuge from the war. Lessons are suspended and they have two weeks left to have some fun and say goodbye to their friends. It’s a

Mark Hews, Group Chief Executive at Benefact Group, says: “We are immensely proud to be supporting many hundreds of charities through our Movement for Good Awards for the fifth year running. We know that £1,000 can make a huge difference so we’re asking that people give a minute of their time to nominate a cause they care about to receive an award. Owned by a charity ourselves, charitable giving is at the heart of what we do and all of our available profits go to good causes. With financial strain continuing to impact many households the Movement for Good Awards represents a great way for people to continue to support causes close to their hearts, without worrying about an additional cost. Any charity can win no matter how large or small and even with just one nomination. So find a minute, jump online and nominate – because that small amount of time is invaluable for charities.”
Benefact Group has donated almost £200million to charitable causes since 2014 and has just been recognised as the third biggest corporate giver in the UK2. The organisation aims to reach £250million in donations by 2025.

out of sight under the Soke – but on Open Days can be accessed through a private garden, thanks to the kindness of the owner. Both are local landmarks really worth a visit, so do come along. Entry is free, but of course donations gratefully received.
The Eel House will also be open on May 1st and May 29th, weather permitting. This unique building on the river (between Arlebury Park and Drove Lane) shows how Eels were caught for 150 years till the 1970s. You’ve probably walked past it dozens of times, so be sure to come and see inside.
And to make May 1st a truly buzzing day in Alresford, the Brocante Market will be back in Broad Street, from 9.30am to 3.30pm. Antique and vintage items, craft and homewares, always something interesting and different to pick up.
Finally, we are always keen to hear from local craftspeople and businesses who’d like to take a stall at our Thursday morning market in Broad Street. We’re friendly, welcoming and flexible. You can come every week or occasionally. If you are interested, please email clerk@towntrust.org.uk
disaster for Daphne. All she wants is to be kissed before she’s seventeen, but now she’s got to move away, she may never see Gerald again! The girls decide to make one last raid on the old witch Miss Popplewell’s strawberry patch. But an intruder gets in first. Who is he? Is it the gypsies, a burglar, a foreign agent, even an escaped convict? The entire village goes into a panic. But they’re British! They must stick together.
In the meantime, will the girls get the strawberries? Will their kindly headmistress, Miss Tricklebank, confine them to their dorms? Will Daphne be kissed before she’s seventeen? You will have to be there to find out. The play is woven with poignancy and gently unearths buried things from Miss Popplewell’s past.

Buckingham Palace is pleased to announce further details on the ceremonial, celebratory and community events that will take place over the Coronation Weekend between Saturday 6th and Monday 8th May 2023.
The Coronation of His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Queen Consort will take place at Westminster Abbey on Saturday 6th May, 2023. The Service will be conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury. As previously announced, the Service will reflect the Monarch’s role today and look towards the future, while being rooted in longstanding traditions and pageantry.
Across the Coronation Weekend, there will be further opportunities for people to come together in celebration of the historic occasion. On Sunday, 7th May 2023, a special Coronation Concert will be staged and broadcast live at Windsor Castle by the BBC and BBC Studios, with several thousand pairs of tickets to be made available via public ballot.
The Coronation Big Lunch, at which neighbours and communities are invited to share food and fun together, will take place across the country on the same date. On Monday, 8th May 2023, members of the public will be invited to take part in The Big Help Out, which will encourage people to try volunteering for themselves and join the work being undertaken to support their local areas.
Their Majesties The King and The Queen Consort hope the Coronation Weekend will provide an opportunity to spend time and celebrate with friends, families and communities across the United Kingdom, the Realms and the Commonwealth. Their Majesties are looking forward to marking the occasion with the public throughout 2023.
Saturday 6th May 2023
The Coronation Service at Westminster Abbey
The Coronation Service will take place on the morning of Saturday, 6th May 2023 at Westminster Abbey. The Coronation is a solemn religious service, as well as an occasion for celebration and pageantry.
Their Majesties The King and The Queen Consort will arrive at Westminster Abbey in procession from Buckingham Palace, known as ‘The King’s Procession’.
After the Service, Their Majesties will return to Buckingham Palace in a larger ceremonial procession, known as ‘The Coronation Procession’. Their Majesties will be joined in this procession by other Members of the Royal Family. At Buckingham Palace, The King and The Queen Consort, accompanied by Members of the Royal Family, will appear on the balcony to conclude the day’s ceremonial events.
Sunday 7th May 2023
The Coronation Concert at Windsor Castle
On Sunday, 7th May 2023, a special Coronation Concert will take place at Windsor Castle. Produced, staged and broadcast live by the BBC and BBC Studios, the Coronation Concert will bring global music icons and contemporary stars together in celebration of the historic occasion. Attended by a public audience including volunteers from The King and The Queen Consort’s many charity affiliations, the concert will see a world-class orchestra play interpretations of musical favourites fronted by some of the world’s biggest entertainers, alongside performers from the world of dance. The performances will be supported by staging and effects located on the Castle’s
East Lawn and will also feature a selection of spoken word sequences delivered by stars of stage and screen.
Through a national ballot held by the BBC, several thousand members of the public will be selected to receive a pair of free tickets for the Coronation Concert at Windsor Castle.
Alongside the stars of the concert, the show will also see an exclusive appearance from The Coronation Choir. This diverse group will be created from the nation’s keenest community choirs and amateur singers from across the United Kingdom, such as Refugee choirs, NHS choirs, LGBTQ+ singing groups and deaf signing choirs. A new documentary exploring the formation of The Coronation Choir will tell the stories of the people representing the many faces and voices of the country. The Coronation Choir will appear alongside The Virtual Choir, made up of singers from across the Commonwealth, for a special performance on the night.
The centrepiece of the Coronation Concert, ‘Lighting up the Nation’, will see the country join together in celebration as iconic locations across the United Kingdom are lit up using projections, lasers, drone displays and illuminations.
The Coronation Concert will be produced by BBC Studios, broadcast live on BBC One, BBC iPlayer, BBC Radio 2 and BBC Sounds.
Neighbours and communities across the United Kingdom are invited to share food and fun together at Coronation Big Lunches on Sunday 7th May 2023, in a nationwide act of celebration and friendship. From a cup of tea with a neighbour to a street party, a Coronation Big Lunch brings the celebrations to your neighbourhood and is a great way to get to know your community a little better.
The Coronation Big Lunch will be overseen and organised by the Big Lunch team at the Eden Project. The Big Lunch is an idea from the Eden Project, made possible by The National Lottery, that brings millions of people together annually to boost community spirit, reduce loneliness and support charities and good causes. Her Majesty The Queen Consort has been Patron of the Big Lunch since 2013.
Thousands of events are expected to take place in every corner of the United Kingdom this May as people take to their streets, gardens, parks and community spaces to join the Coronation celebrations and mark this historic occasion.
Free downloadable resources will also be made available online by the Big Lunch team at CoronationBigLunch.com, to help people and communities start their Coronation Big Lunch planning.
Monday 8th May 2023
The Big Help Out
Will be held on Monday, 8th May 2023 and is being organised by The Together Coalition and a wide range of partners such as The Scouts, the Royal Voluntary Service and faith groups from across the United Kingdom. The Big Help Out will highlight the positive impact volunteering has on communities across the nation.
In tribute to His Majesty The King's public service, The Big Help Out will encourage people to try volunteering for themselves and join the work being undertaken to support their local areas. The aim of The Big Help Out is to use volunteering to bring communities together and create a lasting volunteering legacy from the Coronation Weekend.
So many people complain about dreadful potholes everywhere. I am worried that the public aren’t looking ahead now when they drive but look down at the road to swerve round the next deep hole in the roadway. Flooded roads means that holes are often unseen until your tyre bursts. Residents are having to pay out for a new tyre or wheel but unfortunately in most cases, HCC refuses to accept their claims for compensation.
Hampshire received £5.954m of the £200m Government budget announcement and has informed county councillors how this will be spent. They will continue to tackle them as they do now. But I know that many of you (like me) are frustrated by the ‘one complaint, one patch’ method, when you can see holes not mended in the same vicinity in one visit.
HCC say the primary objective of the programme will be to deploy more smaller patching teams that can focus on fixing potholes and other localised defects across the road network. HCC will utilise the existing ‘Dragon Patchers’ and other established repair techniques. The Director estimates that the extra money should enable HCC to repair up to 40,000 more potholes.
Please continue to report highway issues online at https://www.hants.gov.uk/transport/roadmaintenance
Once logged, you can review the status of reported issues. If you are struggling with this system, just email your complaint noting the site, preferably with a picture and/or a what3words location if in rural areas to roads@hants.gov.uk and copy to me. Thank you.
I recently joined a ‘funding fayre‘, sponsored by WCC, to see if there are any tips to help you and groups in your area. It was really useful, and if you need general funding advice, Community First is an excellent place to start. www.cfirst.org.uk County Councillor Grants start again in June: contact me for details.
Although the £2 fee (running until 30th June) has been popular, the bus services in Winchester district are changing with some bus cuts too. The new timetable is on the Stagecoach website, but changes are as extensive as the weblink, so I’ve created a tinyurl which works too: https://tinyurl.com/ BusChangesApril23. Use of buses has declined since Covid, and recovery is slow- driver shortages contribute to this. These cuts and changes will be hard for students and keyworkers who rely on buses. No route in my division has been eliminated, but please contact me if anyone in your family is experiencing difficulties. I continue to campaign for a better early/ late offer for all communities along the 86 route.
The current HCC school transport policy adversely affects children starting at rural schools with long journeys as the free school transport offer is not provided for children before the term after they are 5 (unless they are entitled to Free School Meals). If you are worried about getting your child to school please contact me without delay. I want to ensure that all parents are confident that transport arrangements are in place for September.
Cllr Nick Adams-King has again refused to meet with local councillors on this matter, until the recent accident investigation is received. This is very disappointing. We have secured the principle of works when the M3 junction 9 work is being done, but this is subject to funding and only likely by 2027! Like you, I want to HCC to install earlier, simple and effective changes now.

Many thanks to those individuals and organisations that contacted us with offers of help with the Memorial Park. You have provided the Evidence of community involvement which is vital to funding. It seems sad that a site of such great potential has been neglected for so long. Success will only happen if expertise and enthusiasm from the town and outside organisations can be usefully channelled.
Such an opportunity for collective working to make something the town can be proud of and to bring delight to many. Russell will be working with the Town Council, as owners of the site, to bring these plans forward.
The editorial comment said: ‘The Hampshire Chronicle can seldom have reported in in recent years such progress on so many public projects in one issue……. This is welcome news that the crippling Icy paralysis of recent years in Winchester is finally melting away. Cities need to grow or else they decline.’ This referred to new council housing in Micheldever, a new doctors surgery in Upper Brook Street, demolition at Friarsgate followed by an archaeology project, initial studies for Bushfield Camp and further work on Station Approach.
And in the week of March 23rd the Chronicle headline read ‘Joy as scheme is finally underway’. The reference was to the Central Winchester Regeneration and the appointment of a very skilled and multi-talented development partner. The scheme has been welcomed by many other stakeholder groups, such as the City of
Winchester Trust. We are confident that the development partner appointed will bring forward the changes to meet the needs of all parties. We anticipate kingfishers and white clawed crayfish in the middle of Winchester, as well as happy residents, bus users and traders.
The most recent news is that Hampshire County Council are not satisfied with the reasons for rejecting the Whitehill Lane route and have serious concerns for the option of using New Farm Road and Tichborne Down. There is an urgency to reaching a decision, as the earthmoving has to be carried out in dry conditions. At this rate it will be winter before we can get on, - and that would mean more traffic movements!
We are still looking for the route that causes the minimum disruption to as few people as possible, for the shortest possible time.
Unsurprisingly, this will cost more than envisaged when designed in 2008, we are supportive of more developer money being spent on this project, but the current design from HCC leaves much to be desired.
Our Fly Tipping officer attended a Parish Council meeting in Itchen Abbas to explain the processes and hindrances, which was well received. There have been several successful prosecutions, and more are in the pipeline. If you witness fly tipping, please contact the Council at once – witness statements are the best evidence to obtain successful prosecutions.
Or well before if you have a postal vote! There is a bitter and cruel war being fought out in Ukraine which is all about
democracy. The Ukrainians want to be able to vote in their leaders and also vote them out. Your ability to choose your leaders is a hard won right, not allowed to many in this world. Your parents and grand parents fought to obtain democracy for you!
In Alresford your vote counts! Don’t waste your vote please, and remember your VOTER ID.
A great event in the life of the nation. Make the most of it, they don’t happen very often!

Formed by a happy accident of weather and geology, our chalk streams show nature at its most magnificent. But look into the water near an old house, footpath, or footbridge and you may also see human additions: fragments of blueand-white Victorian pottery, the edge of a stoneware beer bottle, or a shard of aqua glass from the 19th century.
Jane Eastman, who lives near the Upper Test, is dedicated to rediscovering these lost treasures. For several years now, she has been ‘streamlarking’ – wading in chalk streams and plucking pieces of history from their gravelly beds. The result is an incredible range of finds, each made more fascinating when her research reveals their origins.
There are coffin-shaped poison bottles, sometimes with contents remaining. There are the bowls of broken clay pipes – the cigarette butts of their day. There are imperfectly made ink bottles – testaments
to a time of rapidly increasing literacy. Then there are precious metals: an 18-carat gold wristwatch and a folding fruit knife in sterling silver.
After some careful cleaning, Jane posts her finds on a dedicated Instagram account called @myordinarytreasure, along with their stories. This act of sharing has given thousands of people a window into Hampshire’s history, and highlighted how our chalk streams have shaped – and been shaped by – human lives over the centuries. But for Jane, the search itself has equal value. “It’s a privilege to enjoy the local landscape from this unique perspective; to be immersed in a river that’s thriving and teeming with life,” she says. “Without a doubt, it is this experience of being in the beautiful chalk stream environment which I take home as the ultimate ‘treasure’.”
If you’d like to have a go at streamlarking, remember to get permission from the landowner when on private land. Stick to
shallow water and don’t go out alone; chalk streams can be deeper and faster than they look. Always use the ‘Check, Clean, Dry’ process for your clothes and equipment, to avoid spreading diseases and invasive species.
You can read more about Jane’s work, and her fantastic finds, at www.hiwwt.org.uk/ winterbournes/tales. If you’re a landowner with a stretch of chalk stream, and are interested in Jane streamlarking there, please contact us at winterbournes@hiwwt.org.uk. Our scheme is supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

• 12 oz. large prawns, head-on and shell-on (shelled prawns can be used if you prefer)
• 2 1/2 cups shrimp stock (preferred) or canned chicken stock
• 1 stalk lemongrass cut into 3-inch strips, pounded with a cleaver
• 3 slices galangal (available whole or as a paste in supermarkets)
• 6 kaffir fresh lime leaves (alternatively use dried available in most supermarkets)
• 6 bird's eyes chilies pounded
• 6 fresh oyster mushrooms cut into pieces
• 2 tablespoons nam prik pao Thai roasted chili paste (readily available online)
• 3 teaspoons fish sauce (available in most supermarkets)
• 3 1/2 tablespoons lime juice
• Coriander leaves for garnishing
Peel the shell and head off the prawns, keep the tails on. Save the shell and prawn head. De-vein the prawns and set aside. For those who prefer their prawns prepared, uncooked shelled prawns are readily available in most supermarkets.
In a pot, bring 3 cups of water to boil. Add the prawn head and shell to make prawn stock. Boil until the water turns slightly orange in color. Press the prawns heads with a spatula to extract the juice from the heads. Simmer and let the stock reduce to 2 1/2 cups. Drain the prawn stock and discard the prawn heads and shells.
Turn the heat to high and add the lemongrass, galangal, kaffir lime leaves, bird's eye chilies, mushroom, nam prik pao to the prawn stock. Bring it to boil.
Add in the prawns and fish sauce. Lastly, add the lime juice (if you add lime juice too early, the soup might turn bitter). Boil until the prawns are cooked, dish out, and garnish with cilantro leaves.
Serve immediately.

The grant has been awarded as part of the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities’ Local Authority Housing Fund which is designed to ensure humanitarian schemes offering sanctuary via a safe and legal entry route to those fleeing conflict have safe, longer-term accommodation.
The fund is in place so that areas that have generously welcomed substantial numbers of Ukrainian refugees are not disadvantaged by the increased pressures on the existing housing and homelessness systems.
For Winchester, the grant will be used to provide a total of 17 additional homes by purchasing and converting houses that are currently operating as houses of multiple occupation (HMOs) on our estates back into individual family homes. These additional homes are over and above the 1000 new homes the council has already committed to provide between 2020 and 2030 and will be used to help prevent homelessness for those seeking refuge from conflict in our district.

Rediscovering the ceramic collection at the Allen Gallery in Alton Hampshire Cultural Trust (HCT), a local charity which operates 24 museums, galleries and arts centres across the County, is taking a closer look at the stories behind their museum collections at the Allen Gallery. HCT is undertaking a major research project to expand and re-claim information about the nationally and internationally significant collection of ceramics hosted at the Gallery. Volunteers have been recruited to work alongside staff to research and conserve objects, as well as to come up with new ways to showcase the collection items, and share their stories with visitors and online audiences. This activity is part of a year-long project, Rediscovering the Allen Gallery, to unearth the untold stories of the collections, develop more volunteer opportunities and forge new and develop existing relationships with community groups and local partners. The long-term goal of the project is a capital works redevelopment of the building. Funding for the first year of the project has been received from National Lottery Heritage Fund.
The aim of the community research programme is to improve museum records by creating an up-to-date inventory of items and photographing them. The research will focus on social and previously underrepresented histories to develop themes for the objects’ interpretation and display in the Gallery. The team will showcase objects with significant stories throughout the process and share them in venue, via the trust’s digital publication Culture On Call and on the HCT collections website.

The collections include an impressive and varied selection of pottery, porcelain and tiles dating from 1250 to the present day. The ceramics on display at the Allen Gallery form part of a much larger collection cared for by Hampshire Cultural Trust, and stored in Winchester, which is also being researched as part of this project.
Hampshire Cultural Trust will soon be launching an appeal to raise funds to realise the second phase of the project: a refurbishment of the Allen Gallery which will showcase the ceramics collection, create a dedicated community space and make a significant contribution to the culture, economy and life of Alton.

You might want to consider this handy device if you are working from home. It is the Yealink MP50. It will connect with your mobile phone via Bluetooth and let you use the handset to dial or answer calls. It also connects to your Mac or Windows PC and lets you make calls using your computer. I have been using it now for nearly a month and have to say that this is one of the most useful devices I have bought in a long time. It is available from Amazon for £118.90
If you have been enjoying The Mandalorian on Disney Plus you might find this an interesting distraction. Available from lego. com directly or other resellers. I saw it on Amazon for 20% off recently. Great fun to build as are so many of their products no matter what age you are.
Once again, I return to the thorny subject of internet security. It has long been said that Apple’s Mac devices are not as vulnerable as machines running Microsoft’s Windows, who knows for sure. There are only a few Mac users I know that do have Anti-Virus software installed. I see it far more often on Windows machines although Windows own security software does a pretty good job of keeping them virus free but if you are unsure, you can now install Bitdefender for no payment. It has just been rated by Which as the best free antivirus software out there. It is not clear if it is free for Macs, it says free download on their website, that usually means free to download but pay to use! I should add that I would be inclined to advise Mac users to consider installing some protection.

Residents still raising issues over the Garden waste bins collections
I am still being contacted by residents who are experiencing ongoing issues with their brown garden waste collections. This refers to the issues of payments by Direct Debit. It still appears that Biffa are not collecting them when they should. When residents have called to raise issues, they have been told that it may take up to three weeks to get a new bin sticker with collection dates sent to them. I have been assisting in ensuring that no more bins are
missed but this is just another example of the issues with this service.
Elderly and vulnerable still at risk over Issues with out of hours help
Recently I was asked to assist a resident by concerned relatives and neighbours of a vulnerable resident. As it was a weekend, this highlighted that housing was outsourced to a company in Blackpool who could not assist with the issue. The other Housing out of hours number also could not help as they didn’t cover the issue and there was no cover for this issue at a weekend. Whilst they are trying to assist with something this highlights the fact that the out of hours service is not fit for purpose and is very concerning.
Damaged bins and replacement policy issues raised by residents. Winchester City Council Again, residents are still contacting me with
ongoing issues. This is just another example of the lack of fare wear and tear policy for the bins. This is something I have been highlighting and will continue to do so. It's unfair that residents who have looked after their bins for 20 years should be expected to buy new ones. Nothing lasts for ever and this should be factored into the policy.
Please continue to report problems of potholes and drainage issues
I am delighted to see more residents reporting more potholes. As Hampshire County Council have received more funding to help with these issues it important that we report as many as we can. The more we report the more that will get fixed. Drainage issues have also been an issue and I am pleaseto see these being addressed as well. (www.hampshirecountycouncil.com )
Volunteers from across the Winchester area are joining forces to tackle the problem of litter left strewn across roadsides, lanes, and public spaces.
Over ten villages in Winchester district now work in cooperation with The Litter Partnership, which was founded by Tom Bristowe several years ago after he moved to Upham and was shocked by the amount of litter by the roadside.
Supported by Winchester City Council’s street scene contractor, idverde, and countryside charity CPRE, the partnership also works with a growing number of other organisations, including the University of Winchester, Corhampton Golf Club, the Army Training Regiment, VolkerFitzpatrick, Southern Water and local scout groups.
Every week teams of volunteers collect dozens of bags of rubbish from across the area.
One group is even collecting cans across the district and trading in the metal to raise money for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance.
Explaining how the partnership started, Tom (pictured left above) said: “After moving to the countryside, I was just astonished and shocked by the rubbish that people chucked out of their car windows and on to the sides of roads.
“Once you have your eye in, you can’t stop seeing the litter and you see it all the time everywhere.
“One Sunday morning I thought I would go out and start clearing it up and picked up a couple of bags of rubbish. It became quite addictive as it’s very satisfying.
“I litter-picked a few times and thought there was no way I could tackle the problem alone.
So I thought I would try to encourage as many people as possible to help out, which is when The Litter Partnership was born.
“Apart from litter-picking regularly with a local group, my role is as a convener of people. I’ve found myself at the centre of an increasing large web of individuals who recognise the litter problem and want to do something about it. I help give them routes to do that.”
Tom is now looking at a long-term solution to the litter issue and is working with behaviour change experts with a view to launching a major social media campaign in South Hampshire.
