Adult Peer Pressure
Is it just me or do we have more buzzing creatures in our lives than ever before? Busy bees and wasps awaken too early from their hibernating slumber and crossly moan like a teenager awoken from their pit. Flies breed in their multitudes and have no qualms about flashing their filthy landing gear all over the kitchen table and summer salads. Yes, even the friendly neighbourhood drone man whose grandchildren purchased him an expensive model has the audacity to buzz around you just as you’ve settled outside for a read in the sunshine.
But there is one distant humming that has the power to reduce grown adults to tears and have even the best of us cursing our lot in life - the persistent drone of next door’s lawn mower. Yes, the realities of dealing with adult peer pressure are very real indeed.
The morning had been spent in a manic melee, endless errands to run, knocks at the door, and each member of the family tripping over themselves to get everything sorted so that a lazy afternoon could be justifiably enjoyed.
Finally, noon made its presence known and, as if by magic, a peaceful slumber descended. Fresh coffee and the fancy mugs were scooped up from the French dresser, the naughty biscuits baked yesterday with thick chocolate chunks were placed lovingly on a floral plate Great-grandmother used to own. Sinking into a sun-baked garden chair, allowing the gentle lull of idle chit chat to swirl around you, yes life was good.
Until it all began. At first, the mere suggestion of the torture that was about to begin could easily be passed off. The gentle noise of small wheels grinding against paving slabs and eventually sinking into the lawn might just as well have been a child's bike or indeed a dutiful parent sorting out the recycling bin. I looked around at my family. Why shatter their peace? I might be mistaken. Please let me be mistaken.
And then the slithering sound of uncoiling wires. Maybe it was a hose pipe? Perhaps next door were breeding adders. But no, the unmistakable language the colour of blue that lightly floated over the hedge as the cord became tangled confirmed the wildest of nightmares. Next door was preparing to cut their grass. The cads!
I hastily offer another biscuit around, in the hope that sweetened circles of triple chocolate biscuits would provide enough of a distraction to put paid to any sudden movements in the form of getting up and unearthing our own rusty beast.
Whoosh! The drone of a lawnmower must be a peculiarly British sound that works as well as any alarm. The dregs of barista-inspired-on-a-specialdeal-at-the-supermarket coffee that had been settled quite comfortably at the bottom of father's cup suddenly found its life's destiny hastily rewritten as it flew through the air and landed on the grandmother's gifted rose bush. It might as well have been acid.
We all froze, rooted to the spot, keen not to make a sudden movement in case it transpires that this be assumed as a weakening, an acceptance of fate and a motion of suggestion. Nevertheless, despite our statuesque station, the committee was approached.
"Oughtn't we to cut the grass too?" And there we have it, adult peer pressure. Never mind smoking or drinking something you shouldn't, you know you have arrived as a fully-fledged, stressed-out adult when the mere whisper of next door's lawn mower has you rushing to your garage and ripping out your own machine from its happy slumber.
"No, it's fine, it can last a few more days at least." Sound casual - maybe that'll work.
"We can't, it's going to rain.”
“Great Aunt Ada is coming around tomorrow.” Now Great Aunt Ada could not see past the end of her nose, always complained about the cold and never stepped foot outside the door even in summer unless she was hugging a miniature log burner and likely couldn’t care less as to whether our back lawn was an inch or two over its allotted height. “Think of the bees!” My brother proclaimed; I’d never been so glad to have a sibling. It was a good argument, a great one in fact. A pause ensued, perhaps the battle had been won. False hope can be a cruel mistress.
“It’s no good, we’ve got to get it done.” Groans and more than a few curses ensued as the peace that had been long awaited was shattered. Our ancient lawnmower was taken from its dust cloth and dutifully dragged up and down in wonky lines. But at long last it was completed and done for another week, finally time to relax. Until the drone of the other next door begins…oh not, that’s not a hedge cutter is it?

We left them to fit the kitchen while we went away and they did a fantastic job. They even did unplanned kindnesses like changing a broken garage door lock free of charge. We keep finding little unexpected touches that delight us. We will use them again for other jobs in the house in the future. When you find people like this, you don’t want to let them go. Time to enjoy the garden…
The Renters (Reform) Bill
The Renters (Reform) Bill was introduced to Parliament on 17th May 2023, and sets out the government's plans to reform the private rented sector. The Bill still needs to pass through parliament before becoming law, and we are still waiting to find out what the final changes will be.
The main proposals include the removal of Section 21 Notice. This will mean that landlords will only be able to ask a tenant to vacate under certain circumstances, such as if the property is being sold, or if the landlord wishes to move back in. The Bill also looks to remove 'fixed term' tenancies and move all Assured Shorthold Tenancies onto a single system
of periodic tenancies. This means that tenancies will be month by month with no specified end date.
Tenants will also be given more rights to keep pets and landlords will not be able to unreasonably withhold consent. These are just a few of the headline changes being proposed. If you would like to find out more, contact our experienced Lettings Team, who will will be only too happy to offer more detailed advice.

Be tick aware!
Watch out there are ticks about! It's the perfect conditions for these mini beasts. Here's a helpful reminder of some simple 'tick tips' if you're out walking. These tiny insects, which can transmit bacteria such as Lyme disease, can be found throughout the year but are most active between spring and autumn. They are typically found in woodland, grassland, moorland or heathland but are also found in urban parks and gardens. When out walking, remember to keep to footpaths, avoiding long grass
‘Tick tips’ for walkers include:
O Wear appropriate clothing (a longsleeve shirt and trousers tucked into your socks)
O Use an insect repellent
O Wear light coloured fabrics that may help you spot a tick on your clothes
O Inspect your skin for ticks, particularly at the end of the day, including your head, neck and skin folds (armpits, groin and waistband)
O Check your children’s head and neck areas, including their scalp (skin on top of their head)
O Check that pets do not bring ticks into your home in their fur. If you do get bitten by a tick, removing it quickly and correctly can help to reduce any potential risk. The only safe way to remove a tick is to use a pair of finetipped tweezers, or an easy-to-use device which can be purchased from pharmacies or vets.
Then:
O Grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible. Pull upwards slowly and firmly, as mouthparts left in the skin can cause a local infection
O Once removed, apply antiseptic to the bite area and keep an eye on it for several weeks for any changes
O Contact your GP if you begin to feel unwell or develop a circular red skin rash, often described as a bull’s-eye rash, and remember to tell them that you were bitten by a tick
See NHS Choices for more information on signs, symptoms and treatments for Lyme disease. https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/ lyme-disease/
The Community Pharmacist Consultation Service (CPCS) NHS England and NHS Improvement have developed a new service called The Community Pharmacist Consultation Service (CPCS).
The service is helping to alleviate pressure on GP appointments and emergency departments, in addition to harnessing the skills and medicines knowledge of pharmacists.
If you phone us with a minor condition, you may be referred to the local Pharmacy for a face to face consultation with the Pharmacist.
Our reception team will listen to your symptoms, assess if you are suitable from a list of criteria and then refer you to a community pharmacy, where you can go along for a face to face consultation with the Pharmacist.
Some of the things that form part of the scheme are:
• Bites and stings
• Colds
• Congestion
• Ear and eye problems
• Gastric and Bowel issues including indigestion and constipation
• Hayfever
• Pain or swelling
• Skin problems such as eczema, warts, verruca’s and athletes foot
• Mouth and throat problems
Once the Pharmacist has assessed you, they will recommend a suitable treatment. Should the Pharmacist not be able to help you or your ailment needs to be escalated or referred to an alternative service, the pharmacist can then arrange this.
Have you had your NHS Health Check?
The NHS Health Check is a check-up for adults in England aged 40 to 74. It can help spot early signs of stroke, kidney disease, heart disease, type 2 diabetes or dementia.
An NHS Health Check is repeated every 5 years between the ages of 40 to 74 years, but the checks were paused during the Covid pandemic.
Our patient care coordinator is working through a mighty list of eligible patients, but if you think you should have been offered an NHS Health check & haven’t, then please do get in contact with us to book in for one.
Retirement of Dr. Jane Stebbing
Dr. Jane Stebbing will be retiring at the end of June. Jane joined the Surgery as a trainee in 1987 & in 1990 became a Partner at the practice. Jane enjoyed a career break from the practice after the arrival of her second son but then re-joined us part time as a salaried GP after this. Jane has been a massive part of our clinical team here at the surgery over the last 30 plus years!
We are going to miss her dreadfully, as her patients will too but wish her all the best with what retirement holds for her.

A letter from a new member
the following week and it was suggested I came along to a roll up where all members would be playing friendly matches against each other.
I saw an advert for Alresford Bowling Club in the Forum Magazines and was invited to go along and try it out. Feeling apprehensive (a rabbit in headlights comes to mind!) I was relieved to find that only two club members were there to show me the ropes without anyone else witnessing my lack of skills or knowledge of the game. They were friendly, funny, encouraging and put me at ease straightaway. The time flew past, it was great fun and enjoyable. I had a further session
I immediately felt welcomed by members who were encouraging, patient and shared their knowledge of the rules and game generously. To my surprise I even got near to the jack (the ball) at times. Once a member, at just £2 on a Tuesday and Thursday morning, you have a game, a cup of tea and a biscuit. What a bargain! There is a mixture of abilities and most of us are retired. There are some great characters with interesting stories and I usually do not stop smiling from when I arrive to when I leave. As long as your footwear is flat and wouldn’t mark the green you can wear what you like. However, for competitions the club do like you to wear white top and grey trousers, shorts or skirts. There are some spare bowls in the store cupboard which you can use and other equipment can be purchased from the club.
Having now joined, I was encouraged to play in friendly matches against other teams who
are always very affable. On one occasion the opposing team gave me some tips once they knew I was a beginner. I did question whether they were teaching me correctly and not trying to win the game by giving me misinformation! There is usually a very welcome tea following matches too.
The club runs social events which have included a trip to The Mayflower Theatre, Southampton and an end of season presentation dinner. I somehow (pure fluke!) managed to obtain the runner up novice trophy much to my surprise after a final against a very worthy winner.
The committee are open to suggestions making this a very inclusive club with amazing volunteers. It’s a lovely way to spend a morning being out in the beautiful grounds whilst keeping fit. I have met new friends, learnt new skills, which for me is still very much ongoing!

Weed Control
When I first began studying plant science I remember a tutor asking me; ‘Kenyon, when is a daffodil a weed’? The answer it seemed was simpler than I knew at the time. Weeds can be described as any plant growing in an area where it is not wanted. If that daffodil is in your rose-bed it might be considered a weed. If your lawn grass is in your flower-bed it most certainly is a weed. You must hold a suitable qualification as a paid professional applying pesticides to control weeds. If you ask your regular gardener to do it, and she doesn’t hold a licence, then you are both breaking the law. The general code of practice covering the use of pesticides states that you should attempt other forms of control before you start to use pesticides to control a weed issue.
Weeds can be relatively small, like clover, or large like thistles. They are typically fast growing and spread rapidly, impacting on plant growth in and around them. Weeds are characterised as narrow leafed, like grasses, broad-leafed, like dandelions or woody, like brambles. Large weeds can often be removed by hand, but removing smaller weeds from your lawn may require an effective pesticide.
Pesticides used for treating weeds are often called herbicides. There are two types of herbicides; selective herbicides control only certain types of weeds, typically either broad-leafed or grass-like weeds. Non-selective herbicides control and kill all plant types with which they come into contact. The application of a broad-leaf herbicide will affect and control the growth of broad-leaf plants. As such, this herbicide can usually be applied to existing lawns, but will control only broad-leaf weeds. A grass herbicide controls the growth of grass type plants. Grass herbicides can safely be applied to flower beds and will have no impact on broadleaf plants, but will control and impact grasses.
How weed killers work
Everything we use in your garden is safe for everything that uses your garden – bees too! Some weed killers work by disrupting the fine balance of biochemical processes that occur within the plant. Often causing uncontrolled growth, twisting, thickening, elongation, and eventually death. The weed literally grows itself to death. Others target photosynthesis, the process where plants produce energy from sunlight. Blocking photosynthesis is only part of the story. When photosynthesis is blocked, highly toxic oxygen and other compounds form within the plant. These compounds rapidly destroy cell membranes, causing the weed to die.
Many selective herbicides target enzymes within plant cells. Enzymes allow complex chemical reactions to occur. When herbicide targets an enzyme it disrupts the sequence of complex chemical reactions, producing highly toxic compounds in the plant and killing
the weed. So why don’t selective herbicides kill the useful plants we are trying to grow? The main reason is because the useful plants are able to metabolise (break down) the herbicide more rapidly than the weeds, allowing them to survive.
When to use weed killers
Herbicides are most effective on actively growing plants, as the active ingredient is carried by the sap of the plant. The faster the plant is growing, the quicker the solution will be moved through the plant. Application during less active growth periods are also effective, however the results will take longer.
How to use
Weed plants fall into different families. Much like sprouts and cabbage are different plants but within the same group of plants, some weeds are in the same family group and some in different groups. Certain plant groups are susceptible to certain herbicides that other groups might not be affected by. Identifying what weed you need to kill, understanding which plant group it is in and what pesticide needs to be used to treat that specific group is the key to weed killing success. All herbicides have application rates. Much like medication you take at home has a recommended dose. Exceed the dose and you may cause issues, take too little and there may be no effect. Getting the dose right isn’t just about how much you pour out of the bottle, it’s also about how much water you add to the mix and how much of the mix is applied to the weed.
Is one application enough?
If you select the correct herbicide for the weed you aim to kill, use the correct dose rate and apply at the right time then often one application is enough. However, some weed varieties are more resilient than others. Some have thick leaf coatings or hairs that reduce the contact of the droplets of pesticide that have been sprayed on the weeds. Some weeds are persistent and are not controlled after only one application and several, consecutive applications are recommended. Applications may be necessary throughout the growing season and should continue until the weeds have been successfully controlled. Failing to do so may increase the weed’s resistance to the type of pesticide used – much like the risks of not finishing a course of antibiotics. Often additives can be used along with the pesticide to increase the efficacy of the chemicals present.
Remember, weeds are fast growing and quick to set and disperse seed. These seeds germinate to form new weeds, so regular herbicide applications are essential. It’s relatively complex, which is why you need to study for an exam to carry a licence to use pesticides. All the products we use in the garden are safe for pets and wildlife. For effective lawn weed control speak to a lawn care professional.

Buying second-hand doesn’t make you less of a parent
Jo aka Slummy Single Mummy shares her love for pre-loved and helps launch the Sudocrem Great British Pre-Loved Awards.
I was young when my first daughter, Bee, was born and money was tight. I had to be clever and made a lot of things myself, including a hand-painted border of every single Mr Men character to go around her cot. While some people might feel like they need to spend hundreds of pounds on all the latest baby “essentials,” I loved shopping second-hand, finding bargains in charity shops and going through bags of hand-me-down clothes.
trust like a basic body and hair wash, soothing Sudocrem antiseptic healing cream for nappy rash, eczema and sore skin or the new Sudocrem Naturals Nappy Cream made with 96% naturally derived ingredients.
A tub of Sudocrem antiseptic healing cream really does go a long way. I remember using it on Bee when she was little and it seemed to last forever! Bee uses it now for Joey - a big tub at home and a handy My Little Sudocrem (£2.99) to pop into his changing bag for outings and for nursery. Sudocrem has been trusted by generations since 1931 and our family is clearly proof of that!
When
you’re done, pass it on
Unless you’re planning another baby immediately, there’s no point filling up your loft with baby stuff so share the love and pass things on. Gift to friends and family as hand-me-downs or sell online or at nearlynew sales to raise some money for your next pre-loved bargain.
It’s been 27 years now since I painted that Mr Men border but I’ve not given up loving homemade and second-hand. Just recently I found Joey a Fisher Price stove in a charity shop just like the one I had when I was his age. It brought back so many happy memories and I’m sure it will make a lot more - proof that there’s a lot of love in pre-loved!
Here are a few lessons I learnt as a parent: Buying second-hand doesn’t make you less of a parent
The love you have for your baby isn’t defined by what you spend on them. It’s about the quality time you spend with them, the values you teach them and the love you show them in your words and actions every day.
You can pay £1,000 on a brand new travel system or £10 on a pushchair at a car boot sale (which is what I did - bargain!) and it says nothing about you as a parent. Fact.
Pre-loved clothes are a no-brainer
There are two inescapable facts about babies - they grow quickly and they are messy - both of which mean it’s pointless spending money on new clothes. I was lucky that Bee had two uncles just a year older than her. She wore a lot of blue dungarees and jumpers with tractors on them and couldn’t have cared less. Save your money instead for coffee and cake with new parenting friends (trust me, it’s a much better investment).
Keep it simple
Forget the bathroom full of creams and potions. Your baby isn’t going to be checking the labels on their toiletries - they’ll be happy if they’re clean and comfy. Stick to the simple, multipurpose products that you
To celebrate all things pre-loved, Sudocrem is launching the Great British Pre-Loved Awards on Monday 5th June to coincide with World Environment Day. There are six categories to choose from including best charity or vintage shop and best pre-loved online. Entries will be judged by an expert panel of pre-loved champions including Great British Sewing Bee finalist Brogan Sommerville and BBC Interiors Design Masters finalist, Jack Kinsey.
All entries will go into a prize draw to win a £1,000 Airbnb voucher. Happy Days!

Walkies puts a spring in their step
TakeTen Chesil Theatre new writing festival wins support from award-winning writer and director Jessica Swayle
Chesil Theatre Winchester’s new writing festival TakeTen has received the backing of writer, director and film maker Jessica Swayle, best known to theatregoers for her Olivier Award-winning comedy Nell Gwynn, which starred Gemma Arterton as the eponymous heroine.
Home-Start Winchester’s annual Dog Walk raised a whopping £870 as keen walkers with, and without, dogs took to the Hampshire countryside around the idyllic village of Kilmeston.
The countryside was looking at its best as two walks of different lengths departed, the longest just over three miles and, in no time, walkers were welcomed back to Kilmeston Village Hall to mugs of hot soup, a plentiful ploughman’s and chocolate fudge brownies. The walks began in glorious spring sunshine and luckily everyone was back tucking into lunch before the obligatory downpour.
Sponsor Dan Bliss of Gay Dog Boarding kennels joined the walk with his Lurcher Cody and fellow doggie chums included tiny Yorkshire Terrier Barry who kept up with the best of them. “We are very happy to support such a great charity as Home-Start and know how much work they do in the community with local families,” said Dan. “This is our sixth year of sponsorship and we just keep coming back for more home-made soup.”
Home-Start Winchester Trustee and Fundraising Events Chairman Chrissie Barlow thanked all the helpers, paying special thanks to walk sponsors Gay Dog Boarding Kennels for their continued support. “This is always such a fun day and we’ve have never had to cancel a walk yet because of the weather - although dog owners are a tough breed and never seem phased by the conditions.
“The funds raised today will go towards supporting our six family groups, five in Winchester and one in Eastleigh.”
Ropley’s Coronation Flower Festival brings in the visitors!
Jessica’s endorsement of Chesil Theatre’s commitment to encouraging aspiring writers follows previous sponsorship for the festival from Sir Ian McKellen and Sir Kenneth Branagh. Recognising that writing can sometimes be joyful but at other times tough, Jessica’s personal message to Chesil Theatre and all the entrants to TakeTen includes:
“Kudos to every one of you who’s had the courage to pick up a pen (or open a word document) and write because it is no easy task. To construct a scenario, a world, people from dust and make them whole, make them speak, takes time and commitment.
And yet the rewards can be glorious. There is little that makes me feel more alive than sitting quietly in the back of the theatre and hearing an audience laugh or gasp when an actor breathes life into a character who, not long ago, was a mere kernel of an idea in my head. To create, to imagine and to share is a wonderful thing. And it’s a great privilege.”
With this year’s theme ‘Snakes and Ladders’, Chesil Theatre’s TakeTen encourages writers to enter the competition for plays lasting just 10 minutes. The deadline for submissions is Friday 2nd June 2023. The top ten plays will then be chosen by an independent panel of professional theatre practitioners and given their première in February 2024.
Details of the TakeTen Chesil Theatre New Writing Festival are available from www.chesiltheatre.org.uk including the entry criteria and submission form.
From the first night preview with fizz and canapés, enjoyed by over 100 guests, to closing on the Monday Bank Holiday, St Peter’s was full of visitors from the village and surrounding areas. The twenty-nine displays were themed to depict the countries of the United Kingdom, Coronation regalia, Royal residences, the King’s interests, and the Commonwealth. The arrangements were designed by local residents, organisations and gardening clubs – all of whom tackled the massive job of transforming the new community space in St Peter’s into a spectacular floral tribute.
The Festival also included a Coronation Celebration Service on Sunday 7th May attended by 220 adults and children. The congregation were led in celebration by the vicar, Rev Clare Welham, with Bishop David of Basingstoke and featured the Ropley Coronation Choir singing the new anthem “The mountains shall bring peace” as part of the nationwide ‘Sing for the King’ as well as a choir from Ropley CE Primary School.
Visitors to the Flower Festival in St Peter’s Church Ropley over the Coronation weekend were treated to a feast of floral displays linked to King Charles III’s many interests. Well over £5,000 was raised towards the Churchyard Lighting and Pathways Appeal.
The weekend was a particularly fitting end to Rev Clare’s tenure in Ropley since 2017. For most of this time, Rev Clare has been responsible for leading the refurbishment of St Peter’s after a fire in 2014 which has now resulted in the magnificent community space that housed the weekend’s Coronation Flower Festival.

Citizens Advice Winchester District
Lesley
Rose,
Advice Services Manager
for Citizens Advice Winchester District gives advice on what to do if you’re not happy with work completed by a tradesperson.
I’ve just had my bathroom retiled, but I’m not happy with the work.
At first, things seemed to be going well, but then the tradesperson left to do another job and I had to chase them. They did eventually come back and finish the job, but the work was pretty rough around the edges. They also left all the old tiles and plaster for me to dispose of, which I wasn’t expecting. I’ve now got the invoice, but I don’t think the price reflects the work done or the service I got. Can I challenge this?
Mr Mac
It’s always frustrating when you run into problems with home improvements.
You mention that the job looked “rough round the edges”, if this is to a degree you could consider the job unfinished or unsafe, you should be able to get the tiler to come back to fix it. You could also suggest removing the old tiles might be considered part of the job.
If the tiler considers the work complete, it’s worth knowing you’re protected by the Consumer Rights Act 2015, which says the tiler should have completed the work with ‘reasonable care and skill’. If they haven’t done this, they’ve broken the law. The Act means you’re legally entitled to ask the tiler to fix the problem (if they provided the tiles as well as the service) or get money refunded (if they just provided the service and you bought the tiles). They should fix the problem or refund you in a reasonable amount of time, without causing too much inconvenience. As you’ve received the invoice for the work but not paid yet, now would be a good time to ask them to fix the issue or you can negotiate a lower price for the work.
Let the tiler know you understand what you’re entitled to. Speak to them in person, or contact
I am often asked for advice about Wi-Fi range extenders. While BT routers offer the option to enhance coverage with their halo discs, there is another excellent choice if you possess a different router brand and require a better signal in rooms with poor reception or in outdoor spaces like the garden or patio. The TP-Link AX3000 is worth considering. It has received a recommendation from PC Pro magazine, and it offers great value at just £55 from Amazon. Notably, it incorporates the latest Wi-Fi 6 technology, which significantly improves the range of the wireless signal.
them in writing/over email, there are template letters on the Citizens Advice website, either way make sure you have a written copy of anything agreed. Before you contact them, it’s a good idea to take photographs to use as evidence of the problem. Make notes about what happened, including dates and times. You should also gather any paperwork and receipts - was there any prior written agreement about who would dispose of the old tiles? Was the final cost in line with estimates or quotes given to you at the outset of the work? If not, there is advice on the Citizens Advice website about steps you can take.
If you’re struggling to come to an agreement with the tiler, there are other steps you can take to solve your problem, these include using ‘alternative dispute resolution’, which is a way of solving disagreements without going to court. There are full details about how to do this on the Citizens Advice website.
If you’d like to speak to an adviser from Citizens Advice Winchester District you can call them for free on 0808 278 7861 (open Monday to Friday, 10am-4pm).
Apple iPhone and iPad keyboards do not have a native option for a keyboard with numbers at the top. However, there is a third-party keyboard available from Microsoft called SwiftKey that does have this feature. SwiftKey is a popular keyboard app known for its accuracy and predictive typing features. It also has several other features, such as emoji support, swipe typing, and autocorrect. If you are frustrated by the lack of a number row on the Apple keyboard, you may want to give SwiftKey a try. I have it on my iPhone and iPad and I find it to be a good alternative. A free version is available from the App Store.

New Alresford Town Trust Ropley Primary School welcomed to Alresford Eel House
from New Alresford Town Trust, the children have been looking for signs of heritage and past land use along the Arle in Alresford, spotting a variety of wildlife in and on the river, taking a closer look at chalk to understand how it keeps our rivers looking so crystal clear, and learning geography fieldwork skills.
In the words of the children (who have written beautifully illustrated thank you letters) ‘Thank you for taking us to the River Arle. I had the best day ever!’
As well our public Open Day on May 1st, NATT have been delighted to support visits from local schoolchildren to our unique and fascinating Eel House during May.
Pupils from Ropley Primary School have been discovering more about their local chalk stream, the River Arle. Supported by staff and volunteers from the Watercress and Winterbournes Landscape Partnership Scheme and volunteers
Jackie's County Corner for May
The highlight of the sessions has been a visit to the Eel House, which was opened specially to show the children how Eels were trapped and caught for over 150 years on the Arle. Volunteers had pre-dipped for invertebrates and fish for them to identify, and some of these were taken into school after the visit so the children could look at them more closely in the classroom.

How will your children get to school in September?
Watercress and Winterbournes is a Landscape Partnership Scheme protecting, enhancing and celebrating the seven chalk streams that make up the headwaters of the Rivers Test and Itchen. The scheme is supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and brings together 16 partners, including Wessex Rivers Trust who host the education programme. The education programme is available to schools and groups within the scheme area and aims to teach young people about chalk stream history and cultural heritage, chalk stream wildlife and the pressures our chalk streams are under. For further details, please contact Tracy Standish, Education Officer, via tracy@wessexrt.org.uk
The next public Open Days are on Sunday June 18th, and include the Eel House, the Museum and the Norman Bridge. Come and see for yourself!

Please don’t forget that both Hampshire and Winchester Councils have asked Citizens Advice to help distribute Household Support packages money to those who need help too. The County diverts some of this money to the Community Pantries in the County (there is one at Unit 12, Wnnall) to enable any resident to obtain £15 worth of food for just £5.
You can self-refer to a food bank too. At this point, I’d also like to thank our pantry and food bank volunteers who make all this possible. Contact Citizens Advice by phone, in person or online.
Social tariffs
Social tariffs for utilities are special discounted deals available to certain low-income customers. Many people are not aware that this applies to Broadband too. They're generally cheaper than standard broadband tariffs, starting at just £12 a month. They also usually aren't subject to price rises or exit fees.
Whether you're eligible depends on your broadband provider. Some offer social tariffs to
Will your child need school transport organised by or subsidised by the local authority? If you are worried about the cost of travel for your children between yr R and yr 13, please get in touch with the School Transport team at HCC as early as you can, even if you are not yet sure where your child is going to school or college.
The cost of SEND transport for yrs 12 and 13 is rising in September by a massive 27% to reflect the increased costs of the service, so you may want consider appealing for your family. The School Transport team are there all through the summer but receive up to 600 calls a day!! So, it’s best to get in touch as soon as possible. Details are on the www.hants.gov.uk website.
Volunteer to help next time?
As memories of May fades, can I say again, ‘thank you’ to the organisers, helpers of the Coronation Street parties and big lunches? Whether a Royalist or not, if you enjoyed meeting up with your neighbours, please think how you can do the same again- maybe this year, maybe next.
Could you help organise your local event? The next ‘Big Lunch’ will be in May 2024!

Frequently Asked Questions
Here’s a selection of frequently asked questions especially for you sceptics (you know who you are).
The Carpet Care People
1. When you say ‘carpet’ what do you mean? We mean average size areas, say 10x12ft ish. But we don’t quibble if the areas are a little larger - it’s all done on fairness really. 2. Do you move furniture? Our pricing policy reflects the time it takes to clean working around furniture, rather than moving it. That said, we are for example, happy to move your three piece suite backwards and forwards cleaning under it and replacing it back into position. What we don’t price into the job at these discount prices is moving large pieces of furniture like bookcases, sideboards or wardrobes. Similarly we are not insured to move electrical items, in particular flat-screen tvs. Again we apply common sense and fairness to the situation and inevitable we do end up moving some furniture around, even at these discount prices. 3.
Are there any ‘hidden’ extra costs? The prices quoted above are fully-inclusive and are the actual prices you will pay.

Save Water This Summer
With rivers running low and another dry summer predicted, many of us have water on our minds. As the weather warms, we could easily see a return to drought conditions, with consequences for both people and wildlife. But while hosepipe bans may leave our gardens less green, our local chalk streams would be in serious danger.
Hidden beneath Hampshire is a vast layer of chalk bedrock. Riddled with tiny holes, this chalk soaks up rain like a giant sponge, making it an excellent water-storing ‘aquifer’. When it can hold no more, its contents seep back out at the surface – it is these humble springs that are the sources of our beautiful chalk streams.
When it re-emerges on the surface, the water has gained many special qualities. Its passage through the aquifer has left it filtered and mineralised, and it has an unusually constant flow. It is also a cool 11°C regardless of the season, making it abundant in dissolved oxygen. In combination, these attributes are hugely valuable for wildlife.
Unsurprisingly, however, there is also value for Hampshire’s human population. We draw most of our water directly from the aquifer by boring holes into the bedrock; a process called ‘abstraction’. When there is too little to go around, chalk stream species like the brown trout and white-clawed crayfish can face stranding and suffocation.
Water is drawn from the aquifer to meet our demand, so we all have the power to lessen the pressure on our chalk streams. Simple measures like taking shorter showers, or keeping a jug in the fridge instead of running the tap for a cold drink, can really add up. It’s also worth checking for leaks, which can waste gallons of water per year.
If you’re a keen gardener, laying down mulch and digging in compost will help your soil to capture rain. You could also install a water butt or create a small rain garden. When you add new plants, look for drought-tolerant species. Finally, water your garden deeply but infrequently – this will encourage your plants to grow deep root systems.
To boost your efforts, why not see if you’re eligible for a free home visit from Southern Water? You can get expert advice, leak detection, and water-saving devices – all for free. Anji in Andover said of her visit, “I had gadgets in my taps, a new shower head, and a water butt installed for free. I'm very careful about my water usage, so was pleased to be able to save more.”
Depending on your location, having one of these home visits could even give you the chance to win £500 off your water bill. You can learn more water saving tips, and find out about our special prize draw, at www.hiwwt.org.uk/saveeverydrop

Where does your water go?
The average UK resident uses around 150 litres of water a day. As of 2020, we were the 10th highest water users in Europe. Yet research has shown that most people hugely underestimate their daily usage.
150 litres for a 10-minute power shower
1,000 litres for one hour’s use of a hose or sprinkler
400 litres
wasted by a leaky loo per day
6,000 litres wasted by a dripping tap per year

CPRE Hampshire launched their 2023 Countryside Awards, supported by Hampshire County Council, at the charity's recent Annual General Meeting. Designed to celebrate the beautiful, diverse and thriving local countryside, the awards are back after a brief hiatus due to Covid. With the last awards taking place in 2019, the charity is delighted to once again have the opportunity to recognise and acknowledge those who help cherish, support and sustain our vital rural environment. The Awards are made up of four categories. The Landscape Award, sponsored by Hastoe Housing, is for any initiative, large or small, that utilises or protects countryside features whilst enhancing our green spaces. Examples could include repurposing derelict land, community gardens or managing public spaces for biodiversity.
The Sustainable Communities Award, sponsored by Newbury Building Society, is for any development, scheme or project that actively works to implement a sustainable approach. Examples could include projects such as development of buildings, infrastructure, facilities or landscape in rural or urban areas.
The Grassroots Award is for anyone acting on a countryside issue that is relevant to their immediate or local area. For example, this could include conservation projects, work on recycling or anti-litter initiatives.
The Environmental Education Award is for projects, schemes or initiatives that connect people to the countryside through teaching and learning. This could include projects such as work with schools or young people, educational initiatives, career incentive schemes or new research.
As well as the four award categories, the winners and runners up will automatically be entered into The Hampshire Choice Award. For further information on the awards and how to enter, please visit www.cprehampshire.org.uk

Southampton choir makes their London debut
Southampton Philharmonic Choir and Southampton University Philharmonic Choir are delighted to have been invited to perform with The Hanover Band at St John’s Smith Square on Sunday 4 June 2023 for a programme of music by Mozart.
The Hanover Band, one of Britain’s finest period instrument orchestras, was formed in London in 1980, and has an international reputation for the excellence of its performances and recordings of 18th and 19th century music alongside a commitment to the education of young players and developing new audiences. The two organisations have worked together on a number of projects since 2008, when they joined forces for a performance of Handel’s rarely heard Theodora. Despite the disparity in the number of members (the choir has some 130 singers at full strength), performing with a period orchestra provides a much more intimate atmosphere for concert goers, which will be further enhanced in the beautiful baroque setting of St John’s Smith Square.

thermoplastics, which are naturally produced by microorganisms for energy storage. They are already produced commercially but their feasibility is limited due to high production costs. This is the result of challenges in purification, high cost of the raw resources, and low production yield.
five A Levels each - conducting dozens of biochemical experiments. Eren said: “We have the opportunity to come into the lab, outside of lesson time, and pursue our own practical projects. All the barriers are taken down when you’re at Winchester College and it’s like working in a proper research institute.”
A team of Winchester College pupils has won US$25,000 as runners-up in an international sustainability competition. In an online awards ceremony on 24 April, the Earth Foundation announced that the three pupils – Maks, Eren and Alistaircompeting under the team name ‘Bactoplastics’, placed in the top four out of 1290 teams worldwide.
The Earth Prize is an annual, global competition for teenage students, run by Geneva-based The Earth Foundation, that rewards the ideas and projects with the most potential to tackle environmental issues. In this year’s competition, there were entrants from 116 countries and territories around the world.
Working out of the school’s Biology department, Team Bactoplastics is producing a complete protocol for industrial production of biodegradable plastics, polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), from food waste using genetically engineered bacteria. PHAs are fully biodegradable
A-Level pupil Maks explained: "We have designed a novel, cost-effective method for their production, which addresses the primary challenges in contemporary industrial PHA production. Our plastic substitutes most petroleum-based plastics for packaging and has potential to reduce plastic waste production by 67% in the UK. Our product would reduce pressure on landfills due to its 7-week degradation time, while repurposing up to 1.5 million tonnes of food waste annually.”
The pupils spend 20 hours per week in the laboratory – on top of revising for
The pupils have also secured a partnership with University College London to continue their work in their labs over the summer months. The team will be investing their prize money back into the project to try and ensure it can evolve to have a real-world impact.
