Hands up who is feeling more than a little exhausted?
Whether it’s hot summer nights chasing away even the merest whisper of a good night’s rest, a heavy work schedule or just the regular activities of the week taking their toll, many people are recognising the need for a summer reset.
For many of us, the longer days and extra sunlight provide a welcome boost to our overall health and wellbeing but in reality, with the busy lives everybody leads, life in the summer can be busier than ever and can provide conflicting challenges.
With the unpredictability of the British summertime, it is easy to fall into the trap of not wasting the sunlight, whether that is to do necessary outdoor chores such as gardening or indeed to seize the opportunity to have some social time. And then there’s the endless debate of needing more sunlight whilst also being careful not to sizzle ourselves like a sausage on the barbecue!
As a twenty-something, our generation seems to have leapt onto the wellness and self care train. In reality, though, seasons can derail our usual go-to routines of self nourishment. It’s perhaps harder to curl up with a book and a hot chocolate in summer when the feeling of your own hair at the back of your neck makes you determined to shave it all off.
Over the course of the remaining warmer months, I have set myself some challenges in the name of heightening my feelings of wellness and giving myself a rather needed energy boost. With this in mind, my first challenge was to purchase a wearable activity tracker. Yes, I officially have joined the cult!
In all honesty, I am not entirely sure if wearing an expensive gadget on my arm will really do much in the grand scheme but as Britain can be a guilt-motivation nation, perhaps my spending out on said gadget would encourage its use in my day to day life. Perhaps…
And so began negotiating the rabbit warren of online purchase review hunting. It has always been an awe-inspiring discussion in our household that men and women of centuries gone past possessed the mental capacity to successfully navigate the high seas to far flung lands and discover new countries and cultures. And yet if you were to put them in front of a computer
and a string of product reviews and I don’t doubt that their mental prowess would plunge into the chaos that their 21st century descendants suffer.
“What do you think of this one?” I said, shifting position in the chair. It had been a long session trawling through endless products.
“This one what?” Said brother mine. Wordlessly I pointed to the screen. He shrugged, “It’s alright.” I had figured this much out myself, owing to the shortlisted items now being presented to the rest of the family.
“What do the reviews say?”
“Mixed,” I responded truthfully. “Some people complained that the company wouldn’t refund them after their dog chewed through the strap, others wanted to know why a waterproof wearable didn’t survive a drop in the loo. This one says it hasn’t got a side button. Do you think I should get one with a side button?”
A half-hearted discussion ensued. A side button was not a really relevant aspect but before you know it, you suddenly find yourself so severely influenced by the fountain of wisdom that pours from the anonymous reviews that you are now on a quest to find a wearable activity tracker complete with side button, long battery life, removable strap, functional app and with the capacity to make you a cup of tea in the morning - all in the colour Cornish Sea Azure blue.
“Well what about this one?” I shook my head, “It’s too big I’m afraid.” Another product was suggested, again, I shook my head, “Too small unfortunately.”
“What are you - Goldilocks?” Brother mine exploded. “You strap it to your arm, look at it at irregular intervals to see if it’s counting the steps you haven’t taken and then forget to charge it! Just get any old one.”
He might have had a point. Not that I would admit that under the unwritten sibling code, subsection three, paragraph five. In the end, a purchase was successfully completed and a few days later a package arrived. The first challenge of my summer wellness project was complete, next came the acid test.

FEATURE
Bespoke Kitchens & Furniture
Happy Kitchens have a unique approach when it comes to kitchens and custom spaces in the home. We use excellent quality materials which are fitted by exshipwright joiners, who used to fit the woodwork on Super Yachts. That in itself is unique in our industry but then add in the fact that we are bespoke, but don’t charge the inflated prices that your highend high street showrooms do, gives us the recipe for your perfect home solution. This is why we are one of the highest rated home improvement companies on HOUZZ, beating all the top names you might recognise when walking down your high street.
We have never had less than a 5 star
review and have won the HOUZZ best of service award every year since it has been running. The staff at HOUZZ reference us to other companies as to how customer service should be done. Many of our customers have used us 2 or 3 times due to moving house or tackling other projects in their existing houses.
We do not have a template for design and take a fresh approach with every customer. It is important to take all the best ideas a customer has, then bring in the experience we have to offer, and often our ideas will be completely different to any other companies as we are innovative and bespoke. We often hear that customers have had designs and quotes that all look the same, are boring and
unexciting, yet expensive. This is because most high street ‘kitchen designers’ are just salespeople with no idea on how a kitchen works.
6
Bespoke sizing - Media walls, boot rooms, custom offices, installed by ex shipwright joiners with exceptional attention to detail
So whether you need an amazing Kitchen, Utility, Bedroom, coffee bar with custom pod storage, Office, Media wall or Living Room storage we can help. The design visits are free of charge, and we can quote on the same day. Also Ben loves design, so often at no extra charge, he will help you choose paint colours, light fittings, bar stools, artwork and can even recommend great pots and pans.

Our customers will often use us again, and recommend us to family and friends. The quote from the review above was from a customer who has chosen us twice, and their parents also have a Happy Kitchen, and two of the parents' friends.
“HappyKitchens.WOWWOW WOW.Thankyousomuchforgiving usthewowfactorweaskedfor.”
The McAdams – June 21
The biggest compliment we get from our customers is always around our attention to detail and often bringing something completely different to the table. If you are still unsure after reading this, go and read some of our reviews on our Happy Kitchens Houzz profile, and do a search of kitchen companies on there by review rating, we are always close to the top of the list.
Out-of-the-box thinking, bespoke design features, and friendly staff with excellent attention to detail are just a few of the reasons you should call us today. If that isn’t enough please do remember that the design visit is free of charge, so you have nothing to lose.

A
The outlook for housing locally
The heady days of a couple of years ago are behind us, and prices are now cooling to pre-pandemic levels. Whilst prices will inevitably drop over the coming months, the outlook remains positive in this part of Hampshire for those willing to take a medium to long term view. At some stage things will settle down and the market will re-gain traction, as confidence returns.
The SO24 property market has in the past proven to be more resiliant than many other areas, with prices being supported by inward movement of people from affluent areas such as London and Surrey. The appeal of the Alresford and Winchester area will only grow stronger, as more and more people look to move here for the quality of life that is on offer
in this pretty and well-connected part of the world. If you are thinking of moving, with prices coming down, the 'loss' on your own property can be made up by buying at a lower figure, helping to mitigate the effect of falling prices. It could, of course, be the perfect time to snap up a bargain! Although mortgage rates are currently at their highest for 15 years, they are expected to settle down to more manageable levels next year, which will help to stabilise the market.
If you would like guidance on the local property market, contact our experienced sales team, who will be happy to offer expert advice suited to your individual needs.

Exhibition
West Downs Gallery
University of Winchester
17th Aug - 27th Sept 2023
Alresford Kitemaker John Browning is having an exhibition of his creative work at the West Downs Gallery.
He makes kites using natural materials - collected from the wild (or from other people’s gardens!) Leaves are cooked in alkaline solution, washed, laid out in the desired shape and then dried under pressure. This process is magical; the leaves meld to form a sheet. No glue is necessary.
For some kites John uses paper which he makes himself. All sorts of fibrous things can be used to make paper - inner bark from Willow and Lime trees, Phormium and Cordyline leaves, Flax, Hemp and even the leaves from the tops of Pineapples! For threads, Flax, Hemp or even Nettle fibre is used. John grows the plants, processes the fibres and spins them into thread. Bamboo is light and strong and perfect for making the kite frames. Split from large poles, the bamboo is shaved and formed to the desired size and shape.
The light and delicate structures are conceived and made as works of Art but of course, in order to be called kites, they must fly. They only come out when the wind is gentle and kind! During the creative process, everything must fit: design, materials and construction. And, during the whole process, it has to be kept in mind that it must be a kite - and a kite must fly.

The Alresford Surgery Newsletter
Travelling abroad
Immunisations and advice are available through our Travel Service. It is important to make this initial appointment as early as possible - we will be unable to offer travel appointments to anyone travelling with less than (12 weeks) prior to their departure date as in some cases a second appointment will be required with the practice nurse to complete a course of vaccinations. Some vaccines have to be ordered as they are not a stock vaccine. Your second appointment needs to be at least 2 weeks before you travel to allow the vaccines to work.
There is still no guarantee we will be able to accommodate your travel request as we have limited capacity, even if you do give us a minimum of 12 weeks notice. You may need to need to book an appointment at a private travel clinic such as the Winchester travel clinic. For more information, please visit our website; https://alresfordsurgery. co.uk/clinics-and-resources/
Radiology department – Royal Hampshire County Hospital
Work will start on Friday 14th July on the much needed refurbishment of the department starting with the installation of new digital X-ray equipment to our X-ray rooms. The new equipment and environment will very much improve the patient experience as the Department modernises and improve the efficiency of the service. However, they will have limited capacity in the department while the constructing team and engineers are on site. This phase of the work should take ten weeks and be completed by the 18th September.
During this time, community sites will be used as much as possible to maintain the GP patients X-ray service so, please do consider accepting appointments in Andover War Memorial Hospital and Alton Community Hospital as much as possible. Capacity will be extended at these sites, with Radiographers adapting their working hours to support during this time.
The GP walk in chest X-ray service at RHCH will remain, but patients may experience longer waiting times than usual. Patients are welcome to attend BNHH if they prefer. Radiology will continue to update the community as work progresses and thank you for your support during this time.
Alresford Rotary News
Making a real difference locally and internationally
The Rotary year July 22 to June 23 has been a busy and successful year for Alresford Rotary. We judge success by our various fundraisers, the great causes we supported and the number of new social events that all helped us grow our reputation locally and led to growing membership. Let’s look back and see what we achieved.
Which Rotary events contribute to most of our fundraising?
The Alresford Bonfire, Fireworks and Torchlit Parade remains our largest fundraiser. A lovely evening’s weather helped boost attendance to several thousand happy local visitors. The fundraising continued with the Rotary Annual Christmas tree sale on Broad Street and our sell out, ‘Probably Mid-Hampshire’s Quiz of the Year’. The Alresford 10K Run again proved popular although the hot weather was a bit much for some. These, plus several small fundraisers across the year helped boost our charity coffers.
Where does our fundraising money go?
The good news is that 100% goes to good causes in the form of local or international charities. None goes to fund our club operations.
Where have we donated our funds this last year?
On the international side, we have made use of our global Rotary family (the worlds largest volunteer organisation with 1.4 million members globally). Rotary is well positioned locally in both Ukraine and Turkey/ Syria to assess the real needs and we channelled our funds to where it’s needed most. Through this we provided shelter for the homeless and support to those displaced.
Which local charities have benefitted this last year?
We have supported several local charities. Local to Alresford we supported new tools for the Men’s Shed and supplies for the food bank in Alresford run by Winchester Basics Bank. We also funded lunches for the Alresford Lunch Club for the Senior Citizens and supported new coaching sessions for children in Alresford run by Winchester Youth Counselling. We also supported the Watercress Way by funding new benches.
Rotary is a broad supporter of Wessex Heartbeat, that provides visitor support and research funding for the Cardiac Unit at Southampton Hospital. Alresford Rotary this year pledged support for updating Wessex House infrastructure.
The 10K Run proceeds went this year to Hampshire and IoW Air Ambulance, a vital service for the area. In addition, we have made smaller donations including to Sun Hill School Eco-Accreditation, Perins School and the Alresford Scouts.
We would like to thank all individuals and organisations that have supported Rotary events this past year. Without your support we would not have been able to make such a real difference to those charities mentioned above. If you would like to find out more about volunteering at a Rotary event or becoming a member to benefit also socially, please contact us.
Christmas Shoeboxes!
Last year Rotary Wessex was able to send some 20,000 shoeboxes of Christmas gifts to disadvantaged and displaced children in Eastern Europe with more than 300 originating from the Alresford area. This year boxes will be sent to Moldova, Montenegro, Poland, Romania and Ukraine. Further details will follow in September but if you or your organisation wish to be involved over the summer the scheme leaflet and boxes of the prescribed size are available NOW – please contact wjrp@ hotmail.co.uk 01962 738788

The Itchen Valley ChoirFormerly the Itchen Valley Choral Society, formerly the Easton and Martyr Choral Society…
Festival. This choir was formed in 1922 from the Easton Church choir and first met for choir practice in Easton School, now a private house but then the local school next to the church in Church Lane. It is uncertain why or when the choir moved its base to the old hall in Itchen Abbas (also now a private house) but they flourished there for many years until the new hall was built and opened in 2000.
the Spring and Summer terms we prepare for our part in singing with other local choirs at the Hampshire Choral Festival. In 2024 we will be joining forces with other choirs in Romsey Abbey to sing Mozart, Handel and a new piece by Derek Beck, a former conductor of the Itchen Valley Choir.
If you are visiting the Itchen Abbas and Avington Village Hall, pause a moment, turn left when you go through the front door and hanging on the wall along the corridor you will see a large frame containing photographs of the original Easton and Martyr Worthy Choral Society in 1923 when they sung at what was then the Winchester and County Music
National Garden SchemeHampshire
In June the President of the National Garden Scheme, Dame Mary Berry joined guests at a garden party at cancer support centre - Maggie’s in Oxford to celebrate the next stage in the two charities’ partnership. The National Garden Scheme is aiming to raise £1 million over 10 years to support people with cancer on top of the £420,000 that the gardening charity has already donated to Maggie’s.
The event was hosted in the garden of Maggie’s Oxford, which was designed by Pip Morrison, and has recently received funding from the National Garden Scheme for updates and improvements.
Since 2018, the National Garden Scheme has donated £420,000 to Maggie’s through our Gardens and Health funding programme. This generous support has enabled Maggie’s to create beautiful gardens at its centres in Leeds, Southampton and Oxford, and improve gardens at Maggie’s Newcastle, and Maggie’s Cheltenham. The ongoing 10-year partnership will help the charity with the upkeep of current centre gardens and provide new gardens at upcoming centres, including Northampton. By visiting our stunning gardens, you too can
The hall provides a light and airy space for choir practices, using the excellent upright piano donated some years ago in memory of Sheila Edmonds, whose family ran the agricultural business on the land where the new hall now stands. Sheila, with her sister Jane, were the custodians of the old hall and sang for many years in the choir.
The 100 year-long tradition of choral singing in the valley is continued to this day by the Itchen Valley Choir under the baton of Jane Bryant. We organise a fun Concert in December to get ready for Christmas and in
help us to support Maggie's and all our other charities.

Best Sales and Most Visitors At Art Show
Alresford Art Society organisers are over the moon as their 2023 exhibition notched up nearly 900 visitors and artwork sales of £3,500. With exhibits in watercolour, oil, acrylic, pastel, collage and mixed media, as well as sculpture and wire, there was something for everyone. Hundreds of visitors took part in the People’s Choice competition, voting for their favourite exhibit, with Jeannie Pakenham scooping the prize for the second year running with her watercolour painting Owl on a Post. The exhibition was sponsored for the sixth year by Hellards estate agents and opened by contemporary artist Paul Treasure who said he was blown away by the quality and diversity of the paintings. After travelling the world, Paul now lives in Ropley and specialises in painting our famous chalk streams in oil. “Paint what you love and what inspires you,” he said, “and you can’t go wrong.”
Other exhibition winners were both Best Watercolour and Best Floral - The First Blossom by Clifford D’Souza, Best Oil - The River at Alresford by Penny Claisse; Best Acrylic - Dell Quay by Richard Cox, Best Mixed Media - Fly Away by Emma Barker, Best 3D - Fox by Jen Boardman with The Best New Exhibitor to this year’s exhibition - Woodpecker by Fiona Scott Morton.

Choosing the right grass for your garden
Which lawn grass is best?
How is your lawn looking? If it’s not great, then understanding the reasons behind that is important to its improvement. Perhaps it could have more to do with the grass type than how the grass is cared for. Most people assume grass is just grass and give little thought to the different species of grasses, or indeed the varieties of grass within the species.
Why is lawn grass type important?
Different grass types have different characteristics. These influence the suitability of one grass over another in the setting for which it is being used. If you have ever been on a golf course and noticed how short the grass is cut on the greens and tees, this is far shorter than most grass in a domestic lawn should be cut. That’s because the grass of the golf green has been selected for its ability to tolerate short mowing. Grass on a football pitch is not mown as short but needs to recover quickly from destructive boots with studs. Maybe it seems obvious that different grass types need to be used in these two different examples. So why not in your lawn?
Choosing lawn grass types
Things have moved forward massively in seed breeding and improvement of lawn grass varieties. Suppliers run trials to develop grass with certain key attributes. Grass that is deeper rooted, drought or disease resistant, greener, quicker to germinate, more tolerant of acid or alkaline soils, harder wearing… the list goes on and on. The reason they invest in this is that there are many different applications for how amenity grass is used and the environment in which it is grown. The grass seed they supply needs to perform well in those environments. If you live on the Isle of Wight, you are likely to need different lawn grass varieties than if you live on the Isle of Man.
What grass seed should I use?
Understanding how you use your lawns, how you want them to look, and what environment you are growing them in, influences what species should be chosen for your specific requirements. Some people love to mow their lawn and are dedicated to the task, wanting neat lines and a short leaf. Bent grasses and fescues are suited to this. Others may want a hard-wearing lawn that children and the dog can tear around on. Dwarf rye grasses can work well in these environments but are less tolerant of short mowing and don’t reproduce to fill the gaps in the lawn – meaning you need to consider annual over-seeding. Maybe smooth stalk meadow grass would be better, or a creeping red fescue or brown top bent… the list goes on.
Should I over-seed my lawn?
How did your lawn come to exist? Maybe you inherited it when you moved to your home. Perhaps you had it laid from turf, or sown from seeds bought without consideration of the points raised above. Is your lawn ideally suited to the growing conditions in your garden and how you want to use it? If not, it can be adjusted to provide you with a better-looking lawn that you can enjoy all year round? That is the beauty of over-seeding a lawn. You don’t have to make do with the grass plants that the turf grower found easiest or quickest to grow and sell. Or a lawn grown from cheaper seed by a housing developer. We can introduce new grasses that are better suited to you and your family.
Should I seed or turf my lawn?
Turfing is instant, like laying a carpet or buying a suit off the peg. Who is to say how well that turf is going to cope with the specific conditions in your garden. A bespoke suit is likely to fit you and your needs better. A bespoke lawn can be created exactly to fit you, your garden and how you want to use it. Lawns grown from seed always establish better than those grown from turf as the grass varieties in the chosen seed mix will be better suited to the growing conditions. This may all sound relatively complicated. If lawncare was easy, we wouldn’t be in business. The great news is that your existing lawn can be altered significantly with professional overseeding. If you think you deserve a better lawn then get in touch with a lawncare professional.

DPGARDEN DESIGN
A garden should add real value to your home if done properly, in the same way an extension or well designed interior can do so too. It is therefore a great investment. You also want to enjoy this outside ‘room’ of your house to the maximum, otherwise it is simply wasted space.
At DP Garden Design we will take the surrounding area, style of our clients home, scale, materials and planting into consideration to design an outdoor space you will treasure large or small.

• Looking again at the Pharmacy availability as the situation is worsening with community pharmacies closing. This is resulting in even more limited access for those without a car, long queues and medicines shortages. I have asked for the Winchester district pharmacies assessment (compiled by Hampshire’s Public Health team) to be updated to reflect the current position.
If either of these matters affect you, please feel free to contact me.
Did you complete the South Western Railway public consultation on station change proposals?
Especially if you need assistance or use a train occasionally, I’d still be interested to hear your opinions about ticket offices. I am sure we will examine the proposals in detail at HCC as part of the public transport offer and I’d like to represent your views.
Two new services for 60+
I hope you are enjoying the summer – but as I write, there seems to be no shortage of water as the rain continues to pour! Water butts fill quickly on days like this, and I’d like to find some volunteers who could help others install water butts in their gardens. If you are interested, please let me know.
I hope that you manged to complete the County Council’s Budget consultation, but if not, here’s your chance to have your say on another topic. This month, I invite you to join in the consultation for a redesign for the Cart and Horses junction, drawn up by HCC as part of the submission for M3 Junction 9. Please note, this design is not funded, so capital funding must be agreed before it could go ahead. Following detailed assessment of suggestions from the public, small changes have been agreed which hopefully will be done by the time you read this, but this consultation is for a complete redesign to join onto a new junction in 2027. There is a public exhibition on 5th Sept (3-7.30pm) at Winchester Rugby Club. The online link is: https://www.hants.gov.uk/News/202307 10CartHorsesJuncSurvey Response deadline 17th Sept 2023.
Water treatment: of great interest at City and County levels, there is new legislation for owners of ‘private water treatment plants’ which include small developments and individual properties. This applies from October 2023. You can see the detail on my website or use this short link www. tinyurl.com/private-watertreatment2023
Flash flooding continues to be a problem as heavy rain falls over a short period. Please report all flood matters on hants.gov.uk for speedy maintenance. Thank you.
Road, footway and countryside complaints, flooding, overhanging trees etc must be reported online at hants.gov.uk to start any action. I’m afraid the old days of calling up the highways officer have gone and all matters which might require resources start with a reference number. If you don’t receive a satisfactory reply from your complaint, please let me know with the reference number. Many thanks.

New Alresford Neighbourhood Plan
A huge thank you to all the residents who took the time to come along to the Community Engagement Day on 29th June and on 10th July at Alresford Recreation Centre to give their views on the Neighbourhood Plan. It is very much appreciated. Your opinion on the emerging plan is especially important.
The Plan’s aim is to protect New Alresford’s identity and sense of place as a vibrant, small market town. This can be achieved by setting out policies for the town to ensure our community gets the right type of development and planning decisions passed in the future, whilst protecting assets – green or built – which are important to the community and enhance our quality of life.
All New Alresford residents - it is not too late if you were unable to come. please send your comments on the emerging plan which can be found on the neighbourhood plan tab on the council website under ‘latest news’ or directly to: committeeclerk@newalresford-tc.gov.uk by 31st July 2023.
We want to know what you believe is important to your town. Whether it be to save a favourite view, Local Green Space or to nominate a building for the Heritage List, all your opinions will be taken into consideration.
Improvements to The River Path
The Council has been advised that the river path will be resurfaced by Hampshire County Council on the section between The Dean and the Memorial Gardens in mid/late August. Hampshire County Council will be locating a compound at the bottom of Arlebury Park.
Many of you walk this beautiful path but watch out for closure signs during this period of re-surfacing. The closure will be advertised by HCC signage when they have accurate dates and duration for the work.

Mister Mac
You can gain access to a large collection of leading newspapers and numerous magazines from Apple News + for a monthly subscription fee of £9.99. By registering through Apple's website at apple.com/uk/apple-news/, you'll even enjoy the added benefit of a free one-month trial. Consider this: If you're currently subscribed to the UK Times and Sunday Times Newspapers digital editions, both of which are included with Apple News + , you're shelling out a minimum of £26 each month. By cancelling that subscription and opting for Apple's service instead, you'll not only save a significant amount of money but also gain access to a broader range of publications.
I have been using Apple's iPhones for many years, but frequently I encounter enquiries from people seeking affordable alternatives. Thankfully, I have found an excellent solution for those on a tighter budget. Allow me to introduce you to the Motorola g13, an exceptional option priced at just £150, conveniently available through retailers such as John Lewis or Amazon. Whether you require a user-friendly phone for an elderly relative or a child's initial device, rest assured that the Motorola g13 will exceed your expectations without breaking the bank.
If you're in the market for a keyboard upgrade for your Apple iMac, specifically one with a numeric keypad, but find the £130 price tag a bit steep, I recommend considering the Cherry KW 9100 Slim for Mac. This wireless keyboard not only offers the convenience of a numeric keypad but also provides the ability to connect to two devices simultaneously. What's even better is that it comes at an affordable price point of around £55, making it an exceptional alternative to consider.
That is all for this month. If you need my assistance or advice please contact me on 07392 552 592 Andy – Mr Mac

Businesses give nature a helping hand as South Downs ‘Park Protectors’
Anew scheme is giving corporations a significant opportunity to get involved with nature recovery and staff volunteering in the great outdoors.
The South Downs Protector scheme launched in June and invited corporate partners to support the South Downs National Park for a year with a £10,000 contribution.
The donations help fund the National Park’s ambition to create 13,000 hectares – or an area almost twice the size of Southampton –of new habitat where plants and animals can thrive. The ReNature initiative is tackling biodiversity loss by creating significant new areas of woodland, hedgerow, wildflower meadow, and wetlands over the next decade.
Businesses that signed up to the scheme received volunteering days in the incredible landscape of the National Park, a ranger talk, as well as corporate getaway opportunity at the breathtaking Seven Sisters Country Park.
They also received a one-year subscription to the Green South Downs Sustainability Certification Program, which focuses on helping businesses reach sustainability goals.
As the scheme launched, two businesses were already on-board – Brightonbased firms Clarity Environmental and Groundsure.
James Winkworth, Head of Charity at the South Downs National Park Trust, the official charity for the National Park, said:
“We’re really excited to launch the Park Protector initiative and are looking for corporate partners right across the UK.
“Businesses are a ‘force for good’ and vital to the future of this treasured landscape. As Britain’s youngest National Park we’ve achieved a lot in 13 years, but there’s so much more we can do to make this an even better place and protect it for future generations. The truth is that this is a fragile landscape in the busiest part of the UK and it needs a lot of support. Businesses can make such a significant impact by becoming a Park Protector, helping in the fight against biodiversity loss and climate change, while also demonstrating ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) commitments and creating a meaningful legacy.
“This is also a wonderful opportunity for colleagues to be able to get their hands dirty, and their feet muddy, and get involved in some hands-on conservation work!”
David Honcoop, Managing Director of Clarity Environmental, said: “We are delighted to be supporting the South Downs National Park Trust and their new Protector scheme. Through Clarity Cares, the caritative extension of our business, we are already involved with national level environmental organisations, it was therefore very important to us to support a local and ambitious initiative like the Renature scheme.
“This partnership allows us to not only support the local environment but also actively contribute to the preservation and restoration of the very landscape that surrounds us. We are very proud to support the South Downs National Trust both financially and through volunteering days.”
Ceri Sansom, Consultancy Director for Groundsure, said, “Groundsure specialises in environmental intelligence, including highlighting climate change risks to property when it’s sold, so when we were looking for an organisation to support we wanted to make sure that it matches our ethos. The South Downs Protector scheme works for us because its aim is to improve the local environment through renaturing and will allow us to contribute both with funds and hands on support through volunteer days. We find volunteer days are a great way to help the local community and environment as well as build our teams.”

Winchester Councillors August Report
Cart and Horses junction at Kings Worthy
There was a useful meeting with HCC highways officers last week who explained the two options for improving the junction in the long term. A lucid explanation of each was given, one is for two light controlled junctions and the other of two roundabouts, (not mini roundabouts). Traffic forecast suggest that once junction 9 is completed the flow on the B3047 will decline, but that of the A33 will increase. A consultation process on the long-term options may be found at https://www.hants.gov.uk/transport/ transportschemes/cart-and-horses-junctionimprovements
Short term measures are being discussed to improve the safety, but the more structural changes, will have to wait until, and if the junction 9 improvements go ahead. If only the work had started some years ago, we would not be where we are now!
Water Quality
quality of discharged waste water that we would wish. However, the degree of attenuation by chalk and vegetation as the water filters down through to the aquifer and river will certainly improve matters. If there are fissures in the chalk water can run more directly to the river and avoid this natural filtration process. There are suspicions that this may be causing a problem at Ovington. Hydrology is of the essence.
Excess Phosphates and Planning
As a result of the excess nutrients problem, as described above, and critically that of phosphate, the approval of planning applications which will increase the flow of domestic waste water have been put on hold. This sort of application includes new residential properties, sub-divisions of large houses and changes of use to residential. This legislation has been put in place by the Government to avoid further long term damage to our rivers. Feasible mitigation/reduction methods are being worked on. The phosphate problem only applies to the water catchment area of the River Itchen, which includes all of the Alresford and Itchen Valley ward, but not all of the District.
Dog Fouling
Jackie and Margot recently enjoyed a fact finding trip to the Appledown Lane Water Treatment Plant. Our party included water engineers, a biologist and a river keeper so the questions were wide ranging. Southern Water were informative hosts.
A factor in the decline of river life is the high level of nutrients in the water. In simple terms – if the invertebrates can’t thrive due to eutrophication, we won’t have any Kingfishers. We asked about the installation of a phosphate stripper during the water treatment process at the Alresford works.
The answer is that a phosphate stripper may be installed, but the investigatory report will not be published before 2027 at the earliest. Even with phosphate stripping in place, not enough phosphate will be removed to reach the ‘good’
We seem to have repeat offenders. WCC officers may be take action for a single incident and officers will proceed if they feel that evidence is sufficient for prosecution. However, they would probably give the dog owner an option to pay a fixed penalty charge on the first offence. In order to take action our Animal Welfare officers need witness statements as below:-
1. The witness’s details (including name and address).
2. The time and date of the offence.
3. A description of the dog.
4. A description of the owner (if they are visible).
5. Whether they know who the owner is and/or where he lives and, if so, how they know that.
6. The exact location where they saw the dog foul and how far away, they were when they saw it, plus the visibility (weather conditions etc) at the time.
7. How long they waited to be sure the owner did not clean it up.
8. They could include photos of the dog mess, dog and/or owner but should not put themselves at risk to do this. Photos are not
necessary if the descriptions in the witness statement are sufficient. You can include anything that you feel is relevant.
Insect Numbers in Decline
The topic of the declining number of pollinating insects has been mentioned on these pages before in an attempt to persuade people of the seriousness of the problem and the deleterious effect it can and will have on us humans. Most of us have come to recognise the financial cost of mismanaging our rivers. We need to recognise the same mismanagement across our natural environment. It is worth looking at the Natural Capital Hampshire report at https:// hantswightlnp.wordpress.com/projects/
The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Local Nature Partnership (LNP) was established in 2012 and it brings together a wide range of partners in public, private and voluntary sectors across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. The LNP exists to maximise the benefits to be gained from protecting and enhancing the unique natural assets of the area for people, wildlife and businesses. The value of pollinating insects is calculated on pages 28 and 29 of the report.

When you are next in the car, try this process:
1. Sort out your phone messages.
2. Sort out your sat nav.
3. Do up your seatbelt.
4. Start the engine and then drive away. This saves you burning fuel by starting the engine and then doing 1-3. Might save a few insects too!

Alresford Town F.C.: One Club, Many Goals.
This season, the senior side competing in Wessex League One after relegation last term. As disappointing as this was, the new committee sees this as the perfect time to regroup, restructure, and reinforce the ambitions whilst staying within club values.
Part of the rebuild was finding the right personal to lead from the front line. In searching, the club came across a young management team who separated themselves from the other candidates right away.
You’ll find the youth teams playing in some of the following leagues: Eastleigh and District Mini League, Southampton and District Tyro League, City of Southampton Youth League, and Hampshire Girls Youth League.
As the community club develops, youth players, coaches, and managers will have opportunities for development and coaching education. Pathways from youth to senior football is also an aspect the new club is focused on developing.
2023 has already been one of the most eventful years in club existence. However, for the remainder of the year, the club and individuals involved are only looking forwards.
Starting in August, Alresford Town F.C. will operate as one community club with all sides from men’s senior to boys and girls youth teams flying under one banner.
“Creating one club which support football for everyone in Alresford and surrounding villages was always a main goal when we took over in 2020” said Chairman Craig Scriven. “Over the past year, both ATFC and ATYFC representatives have worked hard to establish this.”
The merger creates many benefits for both senior team and the youth of Alresford regarding football. A master plan is in the works to offer pathways and extended opportunities for the club players.
Markets and Events
“Nathan and Connor had everything we were looking for in our manager search” Lauren Young states. “They are the complete package of dedication, focus, hardworking, successful, and understand how to create a club culture.”
The senior squad season kick’s off in August with league and FA Vase games. The first home game of the season at Arlebury Park is Saturday 2nd September. Midweek games kick off Tuesday nights at 7:45 PM, with Saturday games scheduled at 3:00 PM. Head down to Arlebury Park to support the team.
We also have a team of match day volunteers who help during match times. If you’d like to be involved, then get in touch with Lauren on social media.
The youth side regularly sees over 250 boys and girls representing the club. Over the years, the teams have been successful at various age groups developing a reputation of playing football the right way, whilst teaching the children to play with respect.
Thank you to all our sponsors from the Alresford community and surrounding areas. You have been instrumental in sustaining the club and we appreciate your continued support.
As you can see, Alresford Town is one club with many goals which are already in motion. Come support the Magpies this season; to learn more about both the youth and senior side, visit here: www.alresfordtownfc.com
One of NATT’s responsibilities is the markets in Broad Street. Being a Market Town is central to New Alresford’s existence – in fact, the town was originally created in the 12th century in order to provide a location for a market (and to generate market tolls for the Bishop of Winchester). The market is what makes us a town, and not a village!
The Thursday morning market runs every week from 8am to 1pm, and as well as the very popular fruit, veg, bread, olives, and clothes, we have
some great local craftspeople bringing handmade items that are brilliant quality and great value for money, such as silver jewellery, hair accessories, wax melts, hand-knitted toys, woven baskets and much more. And some local businesses take a stall occasionally to meet new customers and share information.
And for the summer, we’re delighted to welcome a local family making ‘Acey Pops’ – homemade lemonade, raising money for charity in memory of their friend, Ace. Beau and Olive have been squeezing hundreds of lemons themselves, and in their first week sold out in less than 3 hours!
If you’re around on a Thursday morning in the summer holidays, do come and support them.
If you’re interested in taking a stall at the market, email clerk@towntrust.org.uk Typically a space for a 3 metre gazebo costs £15 for one week, and we aim to be friendly and flexible, making space for occasional stalls that keep the market
interesting and give small local businesses a chance to share their wares.
Looking ahead, there are two larger markets planned for the autumn
The Brocante Market on Sunday September 24th, occupies both sides of Broad Street with vintage and antiques, bric a brac and craft items – always a fantastic selection of beautiful things for your home and garden.
Thursday October 12th sees the annual Michaelmas Funfair. This hugely popular event, which has evolved from centuries of sheep fairs into a Victorian Pleasure Fair and now a modern Funfair, will see the whole of Broad Street closed, with traffic diversions, from 11am on Weds 11th October till 7am on Friday 13th October. More information will be sent directly to the residents and businesses affected nearer the time.

Going Batty
As dusk falls over a Hampshire chalk stream, those looking skyward may see strange shadows flit into view.
Charismatic and enigmatic in equal measure, bats are some of the UK’s most fascinating animals. Our county’s chalk streams – each humming with insect life – make it an attractive place for these winged wonders.
Many different bat species frequent our waterways, from the high-flying noctule to the diminutive soprano pipistrelle. The Daubenton’s bat is even called the “water bat” for its love of ponds, lakes, and rivers. When the sun goes down, this aerial expert can be seen swooping close to the water in search of a tasty meal.
Every bat species has its favourite food, but all feast on various types of insects. Chalk stream residents like mayflies and caddisflies are on the menu, as are mosquitoes, moths, and beetles. The tiny size of their prey means that bats spend a lot of time hunting – the common pipistrelle can eat 3,000 insects in one night!
While their abundant insect life makes them great places for feeding, our chalk streams have more to offer. Bankside trees supply temporary shelter, while bridges provide potential roosting spaces. Female bats roost together in the summer, when they have their babies, and all bats hibernate in roosts during the winter.
Sadly, like many wildlife species, the UK’s bats are struggling to thrive. Loss of habitat, shrinking insect populations, disease, and pollution have caused their numbers to decline in recent years. Luckily there are local volunteers, like those of Hampshire Bat Group, who are supporting these amazing animals.
Among the group’s many projects is the installation of 65 bat boxes in the Alresford and Overton areas. The project, which received two Watercress and Winterbournes Community Grants, aims to provide roosting spaces near the River Alre and Upper Test. The boxes will be checked twice a year for signs of use.
If you’d like to support our local bats, there are many ways to help. You could hang a bat
box on a tree or a wall of your home. You could also turn your garden into a bat haven – try adding a pond, reducing artificial light, and planting night-scented flowers. The Bat Conservation Trust website has lots of good advice.
Do you have an idea for a chalk stream project? You could receive up to £5,000 to make your vision a reality, with a Watercress and Winterbournes Community Grant. For more details, visit www.hiwwt.org.uk/ winterbournes/communitygrants. Our work is supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
