Our pretty town comes into its own at this time of year, with hanging baskets of summer blooms, ducks splashing happily on the river, and The Fulling Mill looking suitably gorgeous.
Being a bit off the beaten track, Alresford has retained much of its character, making it a very special place to live. As people who live here already know, once you discover its charm for yourself, few other places will match up to it. Last year Alresford was voted one of the best places to live by The Sunday Times, and since then we are seeing more and more people enquiring about moving here.
A valuation of your home is the first place to start when you are considering moving. Please speak to one of our friendly team on 01962 736333. to arrange a free market appraisal.

The importance of using a professional estate agent when selling your property
Surprisingly there is currently no requirement for estate agents to be qualified, and pretty much anyone can offer advice on what is most peoples’ largest asset! There have been many cases over the years of clients being misadvised, leading to them losing money, with little chance of recourse on the agents involved.
The government is looking at addressing this issue, with the ROPA (Regulation of Property Agents) working party looking at improving industry standards by the introduction of qualifications, which are destined to become mandatory over the coming years. The requirement for people in the property industry to be qualified will undoubtedly lead to a better experience for home sellers and buyers, with fewer problems along the way and swifter transaction times.
Hellards is owned and run by Gordon Thoday, who has 20 years’ experience of estate agency, and is a member of Propertymark, the leading industry body in the UK. Gordon comments: “We want to be prepared well in advance of the forthcoming ROPA recommendations, and are busy training our sales and lettings teams now to be the best in their field. This focus on training and qualifications will ensure our clients get advice they can rely on, that is given with their best interests in mind at all times”.
Here’s what a client had to say about them:

YOUR MARKET LEADING LETTINGS & ESTATE AGENTS
Last month, we had the privilege of sponsoring the Alresford Watercress Festival, a highly successful local event that attracted a large number of attendees and was impeccably organised, as always! Charters has been a key sponsor since we opened our doors on West Street. We take great pride in our involvement in this wonderful community and look forward to supporting more events in the months ahead, with hopes for sunny skies accompanying us!
May was also a busy month in the office, with the team continuing to experience the strong start to the year, as the property market continues to display resilience. This trend is expected to continue gaining momentum in the upcoming months, and we are also hopeful for the sun to keep on shining!
If you are thinking about letting or selling your home, please talk to our market leading lettings and sales teams.
VERY HELPFUL AND FRIENDLY
This was my first move and the crew at Charters made it comfortable for me. From start to completion everything was explained clearly. All involved were very helpful and friendly and made a huge difference to the process.

Winchester Councillors May Report
Three City Councillors
Following the local elections on 2nd May 2024, Clare Pinniger has been elected as the third City Councillor for the ward of Alresford and the Itchen Valley. It obviously helps with the work load to have a third councillor, not least as Russell has been elected to serve as the 825th Mayor of Winchester and has a range of other duties to carry out in the district.
On-going Campaigns
We will continue to fight existing campaigns: for the Alresford tip, roads and potholes, the provision of other local services, including health and public transport. The issue of the quality (and quantity) of water in our wonderful chalk streams. We shall push for faster upgrading of the WCC waste water treatment plants.
Sun Lane Development
We will continue to monitor the Sun Lane development and hold the developers to planning and other agreements.
Hampshire County Council Decisions
As readers will be aware, there are limits to decisions that can be made close to elections; now that they are over, we await news from HCC on items that will seriously affect the ward: the Alresford tip, the 67 and 240 bus services, and the path between Bishop’s Sutton and Alresford. HCC continues to have severe financial problems. The leader Robert Humby is stepping down citing, ‘Ihavehelpeddrawthenational spotlighttotheplightoflocalgovernmentandraisegreaterawareness oftheneedforafairerfundingmodelforoursector.Yetthedeep-rooted changethatlocalgovernmentsodesperatelyneedsisstillsuchalong wayoff.’
Clare’s work on the New Alresford Town Trust
Clare is a trustee of the New Alresford Town Trust; more regular routes for the community bus (run by volunteers) are under discussion, though of course, they will not be able to replace the current 67 and 240 routes.

Jackie’s County Corner
The city council elections are over and a new municipal year has begun. At election time, all councils are in the ‘Pre- Election Period’, previously called ‘purdah’. This lasts about five weeks before Polling Day in which no major decisions may be taken- but background work had continued at HCC.
The good news is that the County Councillor Grant scheme is open for applications from the 1st June .You can go onto hants.gov.uk and search ‘county councillor grant scheme’ or use this link. https://www.hants. gov.uk/community/grants/grants-list/county-councillor
The website advises you to contact me about any application you’d like to make. Please do this: there may be a more appropriate grant -maybe with more funds available!
You may have seen me out in your community, talking to people at their own doorstep. This is an important part of our work, and hearing opinions and concerns not only about the Council, but Police, Health and Water services for example, is a key part of my work as your councillor and the opposition spokesperson for Children at Hampshire County Council.
So, it was shocking to hear two statistics recently. Every community needs new social homes and it is our responsibility as a society to meet those needs. A home does not need to be owned to be secure. Continuing to press for home ownership as the ultimate prize- or investment -is a myth to be busted.
• 145,000 children are in temporary accommodation across the UK. This is because the only homes that are available are either too expensive or not in the right place. We can only imagine the trauma if moving to temporary accommodation means you have to leave your school, your friends and maybe puts your parents out of a job they cannot now reach.
• The second statistic was the 30,000 women per year are experiencing traumatic births. It is quoted that 60% of NHS malpractice claims are for this reason.
As the Hampshire Hospital Foundation Trust is planning its new services within the new hospital configuration, this is a huge concern. I welcome the work at national level to address this, and can only hope that it will bring about rapid improvements to a Maternity system which is so understaffed here and across the UK.
The last statistic is the number of children who are not of a healthy weight. We must find ways to allow children to be active day to day, to be able to cycle safely with parents and walk to school rather than being driven. Now meetings have restarted, I will be working with HCC to ensure their recently approved Transport Plan, LTP4, will work for all residents and business in the Itchen Valley Division.
Next month, I will be tackling the continuing problem of broadband ‘notspots’. If this still affects you, please let me know.

Alresford Bowling Club News
We have had a great start to the season with matches against local clubs commencing on 8 May. Let’s hope our success can continue! We host our first home match on 22 May when our wonderful tea volunteers will provide a tasty tea for us all to enjoy after the game. A full programme of internal competitions and tournaments has been arranged and the race is on to win those much coveted trophies at the end of the season and have your name put on the boards within the clubhouse. Not quite in lights but equally as rewarding!
Final preparations are being made for the bowling holiday to Torquay in July, where two matches have been arranged to play against local clubs there. Arrangements for the Bingo Night are underway and will take place on 29 June.
anywhere near the jack (the smaller ball), tactics come into play. Should you aim for your opponent’s bowls to knock them out of the way, or fire at the head to cut the numbers against you down or just try and draw to the jack? Decisions, decisions! There is so much more to the game than you first think and it is what makes the game so fascinating, and sometimes frustrating, but always good fun! According to an article in The Economist, in the 14th century lawn bowling was so popular that it kept soldiers from their archery practice. Henry VIII was one of several monarchs to ban it, at least for the lower classes, but a keen bowler himself, Henry continued to play.

Asian Hornets
I wrote an article on these pests a few years ago. It would seem that the problem is not going away, and as gardeners we should be very aware of this invasive species and the harm the can do to our wildlife, and what we should do if we come across one. Asian Hornets Are Destructive to Honey Bees with a single one being able to destroy 60 of our native bees a day. The number of confirmed nests has increased significantly over the last few years, especial in Kent and the Southern Counties. To read the full report on this please click on the link. https://ngs.org.uk/seen-an-asian-hornet-report-it/
The more people who are aware of this problem the better chance we have of at least decreasing the numbers. Doing nothing should not be an option. To this end, please pass this information on to all your and family and friends. An Asian Hornet can be identified by its very distinct markings – they’re a similar size to a European Hornet, which is two or three times the size of a common wasp, and are black with distinct yellow lower leg. Visit our Website to report sightings.

Weed Control
Garden weed control can be challenging, let’s understand why
When I first began studying plant science I remember a tutor asking me; ‘Kenyon, when is a daffodil a weed’? The answer it seemed was simpler than I knew at the time. Weeds can be described as any plant growing in an area where it is not wanted. If that daffodil is in your rose-bed it might be considered a weed. If your lawn grass is in your flower-bed it most certainly is a weed. You must hold a suitable qualification as a paid professional applying pesticides to control weeds. If you ask your regular gardener to do it, and she doesn’t hold a licence, then you are both breaking the law. The general code of practice covering the use of pesticides states that you should attempt other forms of control before you start to use pesticides to control a weed issue.
Weeds can be relatively small, like clover, or large like thistles. They are typically fast growing and spread rapidly, impacting on plant growth in and around them. Weeds are characterised as narrow leafed, like grasses, broad-leafed, like dandelions or woody, like brambles. Large weeds can often be removed by hand, but removing smaller weeds from your lawn may require an effective pesticide.
Pesticides used for treating weeds are often called herbicides. There are two types of herbicides; selective herbicides control only certain types of weeds, typically either broad-leafed or grass-like weeds. Non-selective herbicides control and kill all plant types with which they come into contact. The application of a broad-leaf herbicide will affect and control the growth of broad-leaf plants. As such, this herbicide can usually be applied to existing lawns, but will control only broad-leaf weeds. A grass herbicide controls the growth of grass type plants. Grass herbicides can safely be applied to flower beds and will have no impact on broadleaf plants, but will control and impact grasses.
How weed killers work
Everything we use in your garden is safe for everything that uses your garden – bees too! Some weed killers work by disrupting the fine balance of biochemical processes that occur within the plant. Often causing uncontrolled growth, twisting, thickening, elongation, and eventually death. The weed literally grows itself to death. Others target photosynthesis, the process where plants produce energy from sunlight. Blocking photosynthesis is only part of the story. When photosynthesis is blocked, highly toxic oxygen and other compounds form within the plant. These compounds rapidly destroy cell membranes, causing the weed to die.
Many selective herbicides target enzymes within plant cells. Enzymes allow complex chemical reactions to occur. When herbicide targets an enzyme it disrupts the sequence of complex chemical reactions, producing highly toxic compounds in the plant and killing
the weed. So why don’t selective herbicides kill the useful plants we are trying to grow? The main reason is because the useful plants are able to metabolise (break down) the herbicide more rapidly than the weeds, allowing them to survive.
When to use weed killers
Herbicides are most effective on actively growing plants, as the active ingredient is carried by the sap of the plant. The faster the plant is growing, the quicker the solution will be moved through the plant. Application during less active growth periods are also effective, however the results will take longer.
How to use
Weed plants fall into different families. Much like sprouts and cabbage are different plants but within the same group of plants, some weeds are in the same family group and some in different groups. Certain plant groups are susceptible to certain herbicides that other groups might not be affected by. Identifying what weed you need to kill, understanding which plant group it is in and what pesticide needs to be used to treat that specific group is the key to weed killing success. All herbicides have application rates. Much like medication you take at home has a recommended dose. Exceed the dose and you may cause issues, take too little and there may be no effect. Getting the dose right isn’t just about how much you pour out of the bottle, it’s also about how much water you add to the mix and how much of the mix is applied to the weed.
Is one application enough?
If you select the correct herbicide for the weed you aim to kill, use the correct dose rate and apply at the right time then often one application is enough. However, some weed varieties are more resilient than others. Some have thick leaf coatings or hairs that reduce the contact of the droplets of pesticide that have been sprayed on the weeds. Some weeds are persistent and are not controlled after only one application and several, consecutive applications are recommended. Applications may be necessary throughout the growing season and should continue until the weeds have been successfully controlled. Failing to do so may increase the weed’s resistance to the type of pesticide used – much like the risks of not finishing a course of antibiotics. Often additives can be used along with the pesticide to increase the efficacy of the chemicals present.
Remember, weeds are fast growing and quick to set and disperse seed. These seeds germinate to form new weeds, so regular herbicide applications are essential. It’s relatively complex, which is why you need to study for an exam to carry a licence to use pesticides. All the products we use in the garden are safe for pets and wildlife. For effective lawn weed control speak to a lawn care professional.

St Swithun’s School: Celebrating a Milestone Year and TES Awards Recognition
St Swithun’s School has continued to mark their 140th anniversary with a prestigious award nomination. The school has been shortlisted for the TES Awards 2024 in the Best Use of Technology category. This recognition highlights their innovative work with Jane Portas OBE, providing comprehensive financial education to sixth-form students.
Over the last year, the Sixth Form, led by head of sixth form Nick Fyfe, participated in the development of an innovative, online financial education platform, to provide young people with a comprehensive financial life and fairness education.
St Swithun’s is passionate about developing strong, independent women with the confidence to take risks in the real world. The platform helps to equip students with
the financial capability to enable them to secure their financial wellbeing.
This exciting news comes as the school’s 140th anniversary celebrations continued with a grand 140th birthday lunch on 3 May, followed by the school dance and singing with the Prep School in Harvey Hall. Themed ‘Through the Ages, 18842024’, students and staff donned costumes representing different eras from their rich history.
Adding to the fun, a 140th Anniversary House Photo Competition encouraged students to recreate scenes from the photographic archives. These activities not only celebrated their past but also inspired a sense of community and school spirit.
Reflecting on the success of the occasion, Headmistress Jane Gandee, remarked, “The entire day reminded us of why we are proud to be at St Swithun’s as our school
community celebrated our rich heritage and our pioneering and philanthropic ethos. It was heartening to see students and staff alike embrace the fancy-dress theme and immerse themselves in the festivities. We look forward to continuing our anniversary celebrations and creating many more memories in the years to come.”

D. Barker & Son Celebrate 20 Years In Business!
Long established Alresford Jewellers
D. Barker & Son is celebrating 20 years in business. Owners Damon and Liz Barker have fond memories of opening the door to their shop in West Street that first sunny morning on 1st June 2004.
‘Back then’ says Damon ‘the world really was a different place. We specialised in antique silver and jewellery and I distinctly remember our first customers bought a pair of Georgian silver candlesticks. We no longer deal in such things but I am glad to say that those first customers still come and see us regularly and, like so many of our regular visitors, they have become much valued and treasured friends.’
Much has changed. The internet has had a huge effect on retail generally but as Liz says ‘our website shows much of what we stock here but we are still very traditional. We are lucky to keep some very beautiful things and
there is no substitute for seeing these with your own eyes – no matter how good your website, you can never quite catch the true beauty of nature’s wonders. And of course, specialist knowledge and expertise coupled with good customer service matter just as they always have, so in a way, not much has changed at all!
From tiny acorns mighty oaks do grow. Nowadays, with respected Gemmologist and Diamond Grader Damon always on hand to give advice, D. Barker & Son is regarded as one of the leading fine jewellers in the region with an unrivalled collection of quality diamond and coloured gemstone jewellery including many exotic gemstones & wonders sourced from across the globe including varieties not stocked anywhere else. ‘We often say that you really can see the World in on our windows’ adds Liz.
Damon says ‘It has been said by many before, I know, but Alresford really is a very special place. It is still very much an oasis in a desert of retail mediocrity – a wonderful mix of independently owned shops, each one run by passionate and respected specialists. That really is something to treasure. We’re immensely proud to have been part of this wonderful community for so long and we look forward to being a fixture here for many years to come.’
As their birthday gift to you, for every £100 spent throughout June, D. Barker & Son will gift you a £20 voucher to be spent against a future purchase.

Woods Mortgages Independent Mortgage Advice
Following 22 years working for a local IFA firm in Alton, Jonny Woods has realised his longheld passion, setting up his own Independent Mortgage Advice business, Woods Mortgages Ltd, in Alresford. A long-term resident of Alresford, Jonny is now enjoying working in the town he loves.
Jonny explains that we all know how hard it can be for first time buyers to get onto the housing market and demonstrate the income they need but, did you know that, there is a product that can allow up to 6 different incomes to be used for the mortgage income assessment! In addition, 4 of these people, while helping to make the mortgage affordable, do not need to go on to the property deeds which can save paying higher stamp duty costs. These helpers are usually close family members but some lenders will even allow non family help!
These can be interest only or capital repayment and if you do not want any monthly payment, there is equity release. Product options can include pre agreed draw down reserves allowing the no fuss draw down of funds as and when you need them and making voluntary payments to stop the debt increasing.
Jonny explains that Woods Mortgages takes the time needed to explore their clients’ needs and circumstances before conducting a thorough search of the mortgage market to find the best solution. By the end of the process, Woods Mortgages is confident that their clients feel empowered, understanding the choices they made, and happy that they have a good value mortgage. Jonny goes on to say that not everyone wants mortgage advice and that it is possible to stumble upon the best product available, but if you do not know the market, mortgage features and lender requirements, it is not likely.
What Jonny finds interesting about the mortgage market is that it is dynamic, responding to challenging economic conditions. And the areas that have undergone the greatest product development are mortgages for First Time Buyers and Later Life Lending. Both areas can feel daunting for clients but both have exciting products that can give clients great outcomes.
Advice has never been more important and more and more meetings involve not just the potential buyers, but their wider family, wanting to explore how to give the next generation a leg up.
When children go to university, these same products can help buy the student a house giving them good accommodation, saving them rent and allowing them to let out a room. And these same products can help when couples separate, allowing families to help their loved one to keep their home and reducing the disruption on any children.
At the other end, we are living longer and more people want to use the money tied up within their home. It might be for home improvements, toping up income to make life more comfortable, holidays or to make gifts to loved ones when they really need the help. Meetings sometimes involve wider family groups, working together and helping each other to fully explore their options.
Now, some standard mortgages can go into your mid 80s and beyond.
Woods Mortgages can help with most mortgage situations including house purchase, remortgage and buy to let. The process is the same. Finding the best solution by brining time, skill and expert product knowledge to a problem. And, because Woods Mortgages provides an initial review free of charge, you can find out if they think they can help you without paying anything.

Tax-efficient gifts and the seven-year rule
Gifting money to your loved ones could make a big difference to their financial security. It could also be more effective for inheritance tax (IHT) planning purposes to gift money while you’re still alive than to pass it on when you die.
Understanding how lifetime gifts are taxed is crucial. The rules can be complex, and you could end up passing on a smaller legacy than you intended.
Tax-efficient gifts
Some gifts are fully exempt from IHT, such as gifts between spouses or civil partners, and to charities and political parties.
Other gifts may also be exempt including:
• Annual exemption of up to £3,000 each tax year
• Weddings/civil partnerships – gifts up to £5,000 for a child, £2,500 for a grandchild, £1,000 for others
• Gifts from regular income
• Small gifts of up to £250 per person per tax year
• Gifts may include personal items (such as jewellery), property, or some shares.
Your annual exemption
You can gift up to £3,000 per tax year without it impacting on your estate’s value. This £3,000 can go to one person or be split between several people.
Any unused annual exemption can be carried forward. For example, if you used £2,000 in the last tax year, you could carry forward £1,000 to the current tax year.
Potentially exempt transfers and the sevenyear rule
For larger gifts, for example paying your grandchild’s university tuition or helping them onto the property ladder, you must survive for at least seven years for it to be tax free.
These potentially exempt transfers may reduce your IHT ‘nil-rate band’ – this is the amount you can pass on to your beneficiaries tax-free (currently £325,000). So, if you gave your child £200,000 and died within seven years, you would only be able to pass on £125,000 of your estate tax free after your death.
If you gave away more than £325,000 in the seven years before you died, anyone who received a gift above this threshold would also have to pay IHT. The rate of tax depends on the number of years between the date of the gift and your death (ranging from 8-40%)
If gifting £500,000 and dying two years later, for example, the recipient would pay £70,000 in IHT (40% of £175,000).
It’s important to keep a record of any gifts you make. This will help your estate’s executor work out what gifts you made in the seven years before you died.
Next steps
Rules around lifetime gifting are complex and it’s important to seek expert advice. A financial adviser can help you pass on your wealth efficiently, taking into account your unique needs.
We live and work local to you. We would be delighted to help you and your family achieve financial clarity and stability.

A New Era of Sound Advancements in
Hearing Aid Technology
In the ever-evolving landscape of healthcare technology, perhaps no area has seen more dramatic progress in recent years than the field of hearing aids. Thanks to advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and innovative engineering, modern hearing aids are not just amplifiers, but sophisticated devices that adapt to the complexities of everyday life.
One of the most significant developments in hearing aid technology is the integration of AI. AI algorithms continually assess various listening situations and make real-time adaptations to optimize sound quality. This means that wearers can seamlessly transition from quiet conversations to bustling city streets without missing a beat.
Furthermore, the introduction of a small chip inside the hearing aid, boasting ten times more memory than its predecessors, has revolutionized the user experience. These miniature marvels now contain sensors that detect head and body movements, allowing the microphones to function more efficiently. Imagine walking through a crowded market, and your hearing aids intuitively adjust to focus on the conversation you're having, filtering out distracting background noise.
But perhaps the most remarkable leap forward is the incorporation of "brain technology" into hearing aids. This groundbreaking approach mimics the brain's natural processes, enabling the hearing aid to process sound in noisy environments much like our own auditory system would. By leveraging AI to emulate the brain's ability to discern speech from noise, these devices provide wearers with unparalleled clarity and comprehension, even in challenging acoustic environments.
At Alresford Hearing Studio, we are dedicated to staying at the forefront of these technological advancements. By partnering with leading manufacturers and investing in ongoing training for our staff, we ensure that our patients have access to the latest innovations in hearing aid technology.
But behind every technological breakthrough, there are real people whose lives are being positively impacted. Take, for example, one of our patients who graciously shared his story. ‘Insert both Patient Reviews if possible in here’.
As we look to the future, the possibilities are truly exciting. With AI continuing to drive innovation in the field of hearing aids, we can expect even greater advancements in the years to come. From enhanced speech recognition to personalized soundscapes tailored to individual preferences, the future of hearing aid technology promises to be nothing short of revolutionary.
In conclusion, the advancements in hearing aid technology represent a new era of sound— one where individuals with hearing loss can experience the world with clarity, confidence, and connection. At Alresford Hearing Studio, we are proud to be part of this journey, empowering our patients to rediscover the joy of hearing.
As a local independent family run hearing centre, The Alresford hearing studio boast state of the art equipment in order to fit industry leading technology. If you feel you would benefit from exploring the options available please call our friendly reception team on 01962 790749 to book your Full Hearing Assessment.

Alresford Surgery News
We’ve upgraded our telephone system
In our most recent patient survey, the common theme of discontent has been our telephone system at the surgery. Well, we have listened and we successfully upgraded our system in May. The new system means that patients are now told where they are in the call queue and also have the option of a ‘call back’ should they not be in a position to stay in the queue. We are really hopeful that this will improve the experience for our patients contacting the surgery.
Be tick aware!
Watch out there are ticks about! It's the perfect conditions for these mini beasts. Here's a helpful reminder of some simple 'tick tips' if you're out walking. These tiny insects, which can transmit bacteria such as Lyme disease, can be found throughout the year but are most active between spring and autumn. They are typically found in woodland, grassland, moorland or heathland but are also found in urban parks and gardens. When out walking, remember to keep to footpaths, avoiding long grass
‘Tick tips’ for walkers include:
∙ Wear appropriate clothing (a long-sleeve shirt and trousers tucked into your socks);
∙ Use an insect repellent;
∙ Wear light coloured fabrics that may help you spot a tick on your clothes;
∙ Inspect your skin for ticks, particularly at the end of the day, including your head, neck and skin folds (armpits, groin and waistband)
∙ Check your children’s head and neck areas, including their scalp (skin on top of their head)
∙ Check that pets do not bring ticks into your home in their fur.
∙ If you do get bitten by a tick, removing it quickly and correctly can help to reduce any potential risk. The only safe way to remove a tick is to use a pair of fine-tipped tweezers, or an easy-to-use device which can be purchased from pharmacies or vets.
∙ Then grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible. Pull upwards slowly and firmly, as mouthparts left in the skin can cause a local infection
∙ Once removed, apply antiseptic to the bite area and keep an eye on it for several weeks for any changes
∙ Contact your GP if you begin to feel unwell or develop a circular red skin rash, often described as a bull’s-eye rash, and remember to tell them that you were bitten by a tick.
∙ See NHS Choices for more information on signs, symptoms and treatments for Lyme disease. https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/lymedisease/
Have you had your NHS Health Check?
The NHS Health Check is a check-up for adults in England aged 40 to 74. It can help spot early signs of stroke, kidney disease, heart disease, type 2 diabetes or dementia. An NHS Health Check is repeated every 5 years between the ages of 40 to 74 years, but the checks were paused during the Covid pandemic. Our patient care coordinator is

BIRDS
Feed all year round - Clean feeders regularly and use wild bird food, suet or mealworms. You can also help by leaving out fresh water, providing a bird bath and installing a nest box.
• Spring to help them feed their young
• Summer because dry ground makes it harder to find food
• Autumn as birds are moulting and preparing their bodies for winter
• Winter to help them survive the colder months Be cat aware
• Keep food & water away from places where cats can hide
• If you have a cat, consider a bell
• Nest boxes must have a sloping roof so a cat can’t sit on it.
BEES, BUTTERFLIES & OTHER INSECTS
Creating an insect-friendly garden benefits not only butterflies and bees, but also other pollinators and the overall ecosystem
• Grow pollen and nectar rich flowers in the garden, containers or window boxes
• Designate a wild flower area or grow them in a container
• Grow plants that support caterpillars too – nettles are good for some types
• Provide fresh water in a shallow dish with stones for butterflies & insects to land on
• Place a large flat stone where butterflies can rest and sunbathe
• Install a bug hotel and/or a hotel for solitary bees
• Avoid pesticides, opt for natural methods such as companion planting or nemotodes
There are many websites to guide you on which plants to grow and how to make hotels
HEDGEHOGS
Hedgehogs are in serious decline so here are some ways to help them
• Leave out fresh water. If feeding, give them tinned dog or cat food, not bread and milk
• Leave a pile of logs, branches and leaves in a secluded spot where they can overwinter
• Create a home where they can hibernate and raise their hoglets (see internet for ideas)
• Hedgehogs travel up to 2km a night, so create gaps of 13 cm under gates and fences
• Hedgehogs easily fall into things, so cover holes, drains and swimming pools at night
• Keep shed doors closed at night
• If you have a pond, create a sloped edge to help them climb out if they fall in
• They hide in the undergrowth, so check under hedges before mowing and bonfires before lighting
• Don’t leave netting or wire lying about as they can easily get entangled
• Avoid poisoning them with weed killers, slug pellets and pesticides

Godolphin Students triumph at Ten Tors Challenge 2024
In a blaze of youthful determination and camaraderie, Godolphin students set the stage on fire at this year's Ten Tors Challenge, held in May 2024, an event boasting over 2400 participants.
Eager to embrace the challenge, Godolphin fielded an impressive seven teams, setting a new standard of participation in the competition. Among them, four teams embarked on the 35-mile journey, while three others embarked on the even more ambitious 45-mile route.
Excitement was in the air as Friday evening descended upon Okehampton Battle Camp. Godolphin's base camp was buzzing as students forged bonds of friendship amidst the backdrop of military solidarity. The scene was set for an epic adventure.
As dawn broke on Saturday morning, Godolphin's camp came alive with the stirring sounds of "Chariots of Fire" and the tantalising aroma of sizzling bacon! The resounding boom of Royal Artillery guns at 0700 signalled the start of the challenge, igniting a blaze of determination within Godolphin's intrepid students.
Throughout the demanding trek, parents and staff remained on edge, tracking the progress of the Godolphin teams with bated breath. Each milestone conquered elicited waves of relief and pride among supporters, a testament to the unwavering commitment and resilience of every participant.
New Timeline Display for Sun Hill Junior School
Sun Hill Junior School in Alresford has a magnificent 20m long timeline panel of historical events and people from the stone age to the present day, thanks to the Alresford Historical & Literary Society, and New Alresford Town Trust. As well as the global and national topics such as Egyptians, Romans, Tudors and the World Wars, it includes events from the local area, such as the foundation of New Alresford by Bishop de Lucy (1199), the Battle of Cheriton (1644), the Great Fires of Alresford (1689 & 1736), the arrival of the railway in Alresford (1865) – and of course the opening of Sun Hill Junior School itself in 1973.
The display has been paid for by the Arthur Stowell Fund, which is jointly administered by Alresford Historical & Literary Society and New Alresford Town Trust. Arthur Stowell was a history teacher and author who settled in Alresford and created a fund ”dedicated to the encouragement of the study of history by local pupils.” Since then, the fund has been built up from the profits of AHLS publications and books authored by Brian Rothwell, Brian Tippett and Glenn Gilbertson.
The atmosphere reached its peak as staff, parents and families gathered to witness the triumphant arrival of the Godolphin teams. With hearts pounding and spirits soaring, cheers echoed across the hills as each team crested the final ascent, crossing the finish line in a blaze of glory. Reflecting on the triumph, Godolphin Head Jenny Price expressed her heartfelt congratulations to all the students. "Their unwavering stamina and support for one another epitomises the true spirit of Godolphin. We are immensely proud of their remarkable achievement and grateful to our dedicated staff whose guidance and encouragement made it all possible."
The timeline was designed in consultation with the school and pupils, to make sure it covers the key curriculum topics and also featured people and events that students would be interested in and enjoy. So as well as kings, empires and battles, it includes significant events such as Tim Peake joining the International Space Station (2015), the invention of the internet by Tim Berners-Lee (1990), the launch of the Titanic from Southampton (1912) – and even the COVID-19 pandemic.
At the opening ceremony, in front of a group of lively and enthusiastic pupils, Glenn Gilbertson, Chairman of AHLS, told the story of Arthur Stowell, and expressed the hope that the display would be helpful and a source of inspiration for years to come.
Thanks were given by Headteacher Sue Griffiths on behalf of the school.
