2025’s a tree-mendous year to get fit and connect with nature

Every 1 Jan many of us set getting fit and losing weight as our top New Year intentions. We tell ourselves that this is the year we are going to become a better version of ourselves. The gym is often seen as the route to this new body, and the siren call of enticing January membership discounts is too good to resit. However, few of us last the distance, and even by February the number of regular gym users starts to fall away.

Another way to get fit, possibly lose weight (though no promises there I’m afraid), build resilience to bugs by spending time outdoors, meet new people and learn about the local countryside is to join some Rural Strides walks in 2025. Many of them are even free.

Rural Strides is not your usual walking group. Run by qualified walk leader and local ‘knowledge forager’ Malinka van der Gaauw, Malinka describes her walks more as ‘netwalking’ than plain old walking. With no defined membership, she says that Rural Strides walks attract “an entirely random selection of lovely people from all around the area, as well as from further afield. Everyone is simply interested in discovering new places and meeting new people”.

The main ‘new place’ that Malinka hopes people will discover is what she calls the Western Weald. This is the geologically varied and heavily wooded area between Petworth, West Sussex and the outskirts of Alton in Hampshire. This section of countryside was almost left out of the South Downs National Park because it wasn’t chalk. However, thanks to a vociferous group of local campaigners and support from celebrities like Ben Fogle and Bill Bryson it squeezed into the Park at the eleventh hour.

However, while the Western Weald landscape has been protected, its historic name has fallen from use. Using both normal walks through the area’s beautiful countryside as well as informative ones, Malinka is on a mission to resurrect this name and reconnect people to the Western Weald’s unique heritage and landscape.

As the Western Weald’s USP (Unique Selling Proposition) is trees, Malinka has declared 2025 a ‘tree-mendous’ year for walking by making them the theme of her walks this year. While not every walk will be about trees, she said that “we will generally be walking, learning and growing together as we explore the beauty and

importance of trees in the Western Weald”. Some tree walks already on the Rural Strides website are Feeling Firbulous, Walking with Giants and Dead to Yew, while some new, intriguing, walk and talk titles include The Wildwood, Rooted In History and Fuel The Fire.

Whether you're a seasoned nature lover or a curious beginner, these walks offer a unique opportunity to both immerse yourself in the wonders of the natural world and get fit. So, why not make your intention for 2025 stepping outside and rooting yourself in the beauty and wisdom of trees!

For more information see: www.ruralstrides.co.uk or sign up to the monthly newsletter to hear about new walks first.

Thank you, Alresford!

All of us in the Alresford Pigs Association just want to say a big thank you to everyone who have supported us during 2024. The past year saw us providing support to individuals, and local community groups such as the RDA, Sun Hill Recreation Ground and the local branch of the Winchester Food Bank. None of this would have been possible without the wonderful generosity of the people and traders of Alresford and the surrounding villages. We were once again able to make a food delivery to the food bank just before Christmas which hopefully will have helped to make Christmas just a little happier for those in need.

We are all looking forward to the events that are planned for this coming year, especially the Duck Race in June, and hope that many of you will be able to come and support us, not just for the Duck Race, but in all our events during the year. Please do remember that we are here to help within the community, so if you need our help, or know of someone who does, then please call or email us.

Wishing you all a happy and peaceful 2025.

Renters Rights Bill

2025 will see the introduction of the Renters’ Rights Bill. Whilst the Bill is still being debated in Parliament, it is widely expected to be implemented by the Summer of 2025. Current landlords will be affected by the changes and may need to take action. We are here to help!

The Bill will mark the demise of the fixed term tenancy agreement with a reform to periodic tenancies (including existing agreements). Landlords will not be able to give notice within the first 12 months of the commencement of a tenancy and there will be a change in notice periods. Rent increases will need to be evidence based, bidding above the advertised rent will be illegal, and all landlords will have to sign up with a regulatory body and register each rental property on a central data base – yet to be assigned.

The Section 21, used to gain vacant possession, will be replaced by an amended Section 8 and, whilst the finer points of the legislation are yet to be agreed, the reality of the new Bill is that there will be a change from a discretionary to a more fact-based system.

To best manage the transfer our experienced team will work closely with our Landlords. We will advise wherever possible that a fully managed service (fees currently tax deductible) is implemented as regular management visits, regulatory compliance and comprehensive record keeping will be essential in ensuring that significant penalties are not incurred.

The next step in your child’s education

When looking at schools, most parents will want their child to be happy, to learn well and leave as a rounded individual.

A school’s A*s and 9s academic results may tell you what children achieved but not necessarily how they achieved them nor the quality of education the school exercised in getting them to that point. So, it’s worth looking to see if a school shows significant improvement in children’s baseline expectation, where the quality of teaching supports and challenges a child to go beyond

expectation, the school adds demonstrable value to those children and the grade they achieve is a direct consequence.

With regards the well-roundedness, look for the evidence of where attitudes and attributes are promoted and developed, how they feed into careers education and data from co-curricular activities form children’s character and skill.

We take the view that you don’t have to choose between getting the grades and being a well-rounded, happy person. We scaffold a set of skills and develop quality of character, the better to form ‘navigators’ equipped with a compass that guides their journey.

The terrain our children will cross through life will vary, the map of their progress they set out with will see them driven off course and onto new courses as the tide and choices of life change. But their compass will always direct their journey and afford them a point of reference in a changing world.

This compass captures the Embley pupil profile; the qualities that will underpin a good authentic life and one well lived. It

guides children to be open minded, risk takers and to be compassionate. They form the capacity to collaborate, lead and create; confident in their knowledge and ability to adapt; and thoughtfully solving problems without abandoning their principles.

At Embley our grade profile puts us in the top 5% of schools nationally, our pupil profile creates that authentic compass that allows children to direct their journey and live their best lives.

This fabulous amount is an astonishing £1.1million MORE than the NGS raised in 2023. Of course that means we really have have to pull out all the stops in 2025 to try to surpass this figure. As always the lion's share (£2.550,000) goes to our main six nursing and health charities - some the Countries bast loved - The Queen’s Nursing Institute: Marie Curie: Macmillan Cancer Support: Hospice UK: Carers Trust and Parkinson’s UK:

This year we have added a very significant beneficiary to our list. The John King Brain Tumour Foundation. John King was an extremely popular chef with an international reputation. In 2015 John was diagnosed with a glioblastoma brain tumour, and sadly passed away in November 2016. John was treated at the Atkinson Morley Wing of St George’s Hospital in London. During John’s treatment he and his wife - Laura - discovered a roof garden (part of the Atkinson Morley Wing) which badly needed some serious attention, so with the blessing of the hospital and along with some friends they set about restoring the garden- and so The John King Brain Tumour Foundation came into being. Now along with maintaining the garden the Foundation raises thousands of pounds for neurological equipment for the hospital. I think we can be sure that the £50,000 donation will be put to good use. https://www. johnkingbraintumourfoundation.co.uk/about

And so - to the serious business of Garden Visiting. As always we kick off the Season with our Snowdrop and Spring bulbs gardens.

Six financial resolutions for 2

The new year is a great time to review your finances and make sure everything is running smoothly. With inflation at a high and taxes on the rise, the changes you make today could have a big impact on the health of yourfinances in 20 and beyond.

1.Assess your savings

If you already have sufficient cash savings, you may want to consider investing in the stock market for your longterm savings objectives. While volatile, history shows that equities tend to perform better than cash over the long term.

2.Revisit your financial goals

Consider what you would like to achieve over the short, medium, and long term. Adjust the amount you are saving and where you are saving accordingly.

3.Check your pension is on track

Understanding how much money you’ve saved up in all your pension pots will help you work out whether you’re on track to achieve your retirement ambitions.

4.Make the most of your tax allowances

Using your ISA, capital gains tax and dividend allowances each tax year could help you grow your money more tax efficiently, maximising the value to you and your family.

5.Review your protection

Having the right protection is crucial to ensure you and your family’s finances hold up in the event of unexpected illness or death.

6.Get some financial advice

Understanding where to invest, how much you need to save for retirement and what to do to secure your family’s financial future can be really difficult on your own.

We live and work local to you. We would be delighted to help you and your family achieve financial clarity and stability.

January can seem like the darkest month of the year. If you’re struggling, Samaritans are promoting “Brew Monday” on the 20th January to raise awareness of the support they offer. It’s Cervical Cancer Prevention Week

From 21st Jan to 28th Jan. The campaign aims to bring attention to those whose lives have been impacted by cervical cancer, to find solutions, and to remember those we have lost.

In the UK, around 3,200 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer every year, with over 800 losing their lives.

For some of us, cancer is personal. Whether you have been diagnosed before or know someone who has, it can be comforting to remember that people do care, and campaigns like this one exist to work

towards a day when cervical cancer becomes a thing of the past.

The UK has the tools to get there. We have a wide-reaching HPV vaccination programme, and highly effective cervical screening and colposcopy services. Innovations in these programmes mean we are preventing more cases than ever before, and we have the mental health support to match the treatment with charities like Macmillan leading the way.

Healthier Together

It can be extremely stressful when your child is unwell. We know that there is a huge amount of information available at your fingertips, but finding something that provides clear and accurate information is not always easy!

The resources on the Healthier Together website have been developed in partnership between parents and healthcare professionals from across Dorset, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. You'll find clear information on common childhood illnesses, including advice on what 'red-flag' signs to look out for, where to seek help if required, what you should do to keep your child comfortable and how long your child's symptoms are likely to last.

https://what0-18.nhs.uk/ they also have a whole section on Covid, Strep A & Scarlet Fever.

Not attending your appointment

Please remember if you cannot attend your

appointment, please contact us to cancel it ASAP please. You can reply to your text message appointment reminder with ‘CANCEL’ or call in. Your appointment could be offered to another patient who urgently needs advice.

RSV Vaccination

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is an enveloped RNA virus, in the same family as the human parainfluenza viruses and mumps and measles viruses. RSV is one of the common viruses that cause coughs and colds in winter. RSV is transmitted by large droplets and by secretions from contact with an infected person.

All eligible patients will be sent a text invitation or will receive a telephone call to invite them to a clinic for this vaccination in January/February.

Mr Mac - January News

It is quite possible that you might have had a “Sign in with Passkey” option when visiting certain websites recently. A passkey is a more secure alternative to passwords for signing in to online accounts. It allows a user to sign in to apps and websites using the same process they use to unlock their device, Face ID, fingerprint or PIN. It offers an extra level of security as there are no passwords to steal. All of this is backed by the FIDO Alliance whose members include: Apple, Amazon, American Express, Google, Microsoft and PayPal, to name just a few. So, the next time you are offered this option you can proceed with confidence. Apple’s new Password app also has passkey management built in stored in its iCloud keychain. Please contact me directly if you would like any further information.

Apple’s security for iPhones and iPads is widely regarded as one of the most robust in the industry. However, no system is entirely invulnerable. For instance, if your device is stolen and Advanced Data Protection has not been activated, you may risk losing access to your data, as highlighted in an article in the Daily Telegraph in December. Activating this feature adds an extra layer of encryption to safeguard your information. If you need guidance or support with setting up Advanced Data Protection or managing any other aspect of Apple security, feel free to reach out to me using the contact details below. Protecting your data is crucial in today’s digital landscape, and I’m here to help ensure your devices remain secure. This is our first issue for 2025, and I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a happy, healthy, and bug-free year ahead!

Mayor of Winchester celebrates Bluebird Care’s 20th anniversary

Bluebird Care Winchester, Eastleigh & Romsey was delighted to be joined by the Mayor of Winchester, Cllr Russell Gordon-Smith, as the company celebrated their 20th birthday.

The Mayor joined Bluebird Care staff and customers as they marked the significant milestone with an afternoon tea and fun social activities.

During the event, the Mayor gave a speech commemorating Bluebird Care for their longstanding commitment to supporting people in their own homes. He highlighted the positive impact they have had on the local community, emphasising the importance of their compassionate and professional care services.

Guide dog puppies Titch and Kyla have spent the summer settling into their new homes in Hampshire

They left the Guide Dogs’ National Centre in Leamington Spa a few months ago and travelled to the region to live with their volunteer puppy raisers, where they’ll stay and train for around 12 months.

Puppy Raisers look after puppies for their first year until they start their guide dog training, teaching them basic commands and introducing them to different social environments, with essential costs covered, including food and vet bills. The sight loss charity is now wanting to expand its puppy raising scheme and is appealing for volunteers in the Meon Valley, so that more pups can go on to become life-changing guide dogs.

Georgina Wingham, a puppy development advisor for Guide Dogs said: “Titch and Kyla are among our latest recruits to join our puppy raising scheme in Hampshire. Titch, a yellow Labrador cross golden retriever, is living with Puppy Raisers Alan and Jacqui Falder and is their 2nd pup, while Kyla, a black Labrador cross golden retriever, is with first-time Puppy Raisers Catherine, Robert and Charlee and has settled in really well with

Bluebird Care – rated as outstanding by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) – supports hundreds of individuals across Winchester, Alresford, Eastleigh, and Romsey. Their bespoke services range from companionship and personal care to specialised dementia care and live-in support, ensuring people can maintain their independence whatever their requirements.

Mayor of Winchester, Cllr Russell Gordon-Smith, said: “Congratulations to Bluebird Care for two decades of service. I was delighted to be invited to their anniversary event and hearing about all the people they have supported over the years. I wish them lots of luck in their fundraising efforts too, with Alzheimer’s Society being named as their charity of the year.”

Norman Murphy, Managing Director of Bluebird Care Winchester, Eastleigh & Romsey, said: “We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us in celebrating this milestone anniversary. We're incredibly proud of the work we do, and as Bluebird Care enters its third decade, we're more determined than ever to support our local community. Our customers and staff mean the world to us, so it was wonderful to have so many sharing this special moment.”

The day was also an opportunity to raise awareness and funds for Bluebird Care’s charity of the year, the Alzheimer’s Society, where their fundraising total currently stands at over £42,000.

their pet dog Martha. “Both puppies are in loving homes, but we need more local volunteers who’d be happy to help us.

“Being a Puppy Raiser is a long-term commitment but it’s exciting and very rewarding. There’s nothing quite like the feeling you get when the puppy you’ve looked after becomes a qualified guide dog.

“Ideally, we need people who are mostly at home and can spend time with the puppy to develop and socialise them. This involves things like taking the puppy to different environments such as cafes, shops, on public transport, and other places a guide dog owner might go to.

“It’s not always easy but you won’t be doing it alone. We’ll provide all the training and support you need, so you’ll be well equipped to care for your puppy when they arrive.”

Alan & Jacki said “You will really enjoy it, especially seeing them grow and achieving their potential and being part of the journey to changing someone who has sight loss’s life. The milestones come quickly”. All being well, Titch & Kyla will qualify as working guide dogs at around two years of age.

If you’d like to find out more about becoming a Puppy Raiser for Guide Dogs in Hampshire, please do get in touch. With your support, we can help train more life-changing guide dogs for people in the UK living with sight loss.

Yes, You SHOULD Feel Good (About Your Vagina)

Those of us who have issues down there know the impact our vagina can have on our quality of life.

But we should ALL feel good about our vaginas.

Ultra Femme 360 is the painless radio frequency treatment that promotes the body’s own natural collagen production to restore and tighten the vaginal area.

From puberty, childbirth, menopause, and all the fun stuff in between, our vaginas go through a lot, and we rarely give them the care they need.

Our vaginal area is just as prone to damage and ageing as the rest of our body. Distressing problems with vaginal laxity, stress incontinence or reduced tissue quality are all experienced by most women at some point in their life.

The Ultra Femme 360 treatment provides total vaginal rejuvenation in one quick and painless treatment that lasts just eight minutes*.

What is Ultra Femme 360?

Ultra Femme 360 is a non-surgical solution for restoring the internal and external vaginal area. As the applicator is guided in and around the vagina, the radio frequency activates our own body’s natural collagen and elastin production, which tightens the vaginal canal and surrounding skin. The low levels of heat from the treatment also encourages blood flow to the area, further boosting the effects.

Feel good…

Who can benefit from Ultra Femme 360?

This is a safe and gentle treatment that is suitable for most women. If you have experienced vaginal changes since childbirth or menopause or have functional issues including stress incontinence or reduced sexual enjoyment, Ultra Femme 360 can tighten, restore, and rejuvenate your vagina for increased confidence and personal wellbeing.

Does the treatment hurt?

We understand that this kind of treatment can feel daunting. However, we aim to make you feel comfortable and relaxed throughout the treatment, which is entirely painless and lasts only 8 minutes. There is no downtime, and you can return to your normal daily activities immediately afterwards. *Recommended one treatment per week for three weeks for the best results.

We are one of the first clinics in the country to offer this treatment and look forward to welcoming you at The Face & Skin Clinic.

Book your treatment today. We should all feel good about our vaginas.

Sausage & Spinach Pasta Bake

INGREDIENTS

• 6 good-quality pork sausages (about 400g), skinned

• 680g jar passata with garlic and herbs

• 1 tbsp oregano, chopped (or 1 tsp dried)

• 500g pack pasta shapes

• 400g pack spinach

• 2 x 350g tubs ready-made cheese sauce (use a full-fat one if freezing)

• Freshly grated nutmeg

• 100g parmesan, grated

• 1 egg, beaten, to glaze

METHOD

Heat a large frying pan and brown the sausages, using a wooden spoon to break up the meat. Pour off any fat from the pan, stir in the passata, bring to the boil, then add the oregano and season. Simmer for 10 mins.

Cook the pasta for 2 mins less than the pack says, reserve some cooking water, then drain, cool under cold water and drain again. Meanwhile, pour a kettle of boiling water over the spinach in a colander to wilt, then squeeze out all the water. Mix the pasta with the cheese sauce and some of the reserved water, to loosen. Season.

In a large dish, add the meat sauce, then the spinach, some nutmeg and seasoning. Next, add a third of the Parmesan, the cheesy pasta, more nutmeg and finally the rest of the cheese. Wrap and freeze. Defrost at room temperature for about 8 hrs. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Bake for 40-45 mins, until the dish is piping hot and golden.

CPRE Hampshire 2024 Countryside Awards Winners Announced

On Tuesday, 10th December 2024, the CPRE Hampshire Countryside Awards ceremony was held at Kings Somborne Village Hall Recreation Ground, celebrating the remarkable individuals and organisations that help the Hampshire countryside to thrive. At the award ceremony, over 50 people gathered to honour countryside projects address pressing issues such as climate change, highlight nature’s restorative benefits on health and wellbeing, celebrate our protected landscapes, and promote community projects at the grassroots level.

Margaret Paren, Chair of CPRE Hampshire, welcomed all the guests and congratulated all the winners and finalists for their exceptional work and commitment to the enhancement and protection of the Hampshire countryside. The Earl of Malmesbury, president of CPRE Hampshire, presented the four finalists with their award certificates at this year's prestigious award ceremony:

The Hampshire Grassroots Action Award sponsored by Vitacress Winner: Alton in Bloom Community Grow Club

• A multigenerational community group that enriches the town, environment, and wildlife while teaching families to grow their own food and flowers. It’s more than gardening; it’s about growing together as a community.

• Speaking of the project, judges commented: “We were very impressed by the extraordinary range of projects which bring such a broad section of the local community together.”

The Hampshire Projects in Protected Landscapes Award sponsored by Terrafirma Winner: Blacknest Fields Nature Recovery

• This project is transforming an 8-acre site near Blacknest into a flourishing wildlife haven. Exciting efforts include planting new hedges, cultivating a community orchard, and creating habitats for pollinators and other wildlife.

• Speaking of the project, judges commented: “Excellent project, which promotes wide community engagement, will transform habitat to the benefit of local flora and fauna and have a lasting impact on biodiversity.”

The Hampshire Climate Action Award sponsored by Hastoe Housing Winner: Future Energy Landscape Workshops, Energise South Downs

• During the workshops led by Energise South Downs, communities explore how they might deploy renewable energy technologies to meet local energy needs. During the workshops, participants identify areas that are key community assets and map grid infrastructure that already exists in the area, whilst discussing potential areas for renewables, including rooftop solar.

• Climate Action Award Sponsor, Hastoe Housing told us: “The climate crisis needs solutions at a local level and central to this is helping people understand the types of renewable energy available and their impact. Equally important is finding and agreeing on suitable sites. The importance of these workshops cannot be overstated.”

The Hampshire Countryside Health & Wellbeing Award Winner: Walk and Talk Therapies by Winchester Youth Counselling

• Walk and Talk Therapy uses the natural environment to help engage young people who may find it hard to access therapy in the traditional indoor, closed environment. Conducted in a local Nature Reserve

instead of a counselling room, these sessions are found to decrease feelings of anxiety or stress as some people find it easier to talk when on the move outside.

• Speaking of the project, judges commented: “A wonderfully innovative way to provide mental health support to young people and their carers by taking them away from the normal indoor environment and out into nature.”

In addition, Litter Pickers of the New Forest were highly commended for their efforts to keep the countryside clean and promoting the message to ‘leave no footprint other than your own’.

Each of these remarkable projects contributes significantly to the Hampshire countryside, making it a better place for everyone to live, work, and enjoy. The Hampshire Choice Award , voted for by the Hampshire public, was proudly presented to Blacknest Fields Nature Recovery Project, recognising their outstanding contribution to nature recovery in the South Downs National Park.

Sarah Womersley from the Blacknest Field group spoke on behalf of the group. ‘We are delighted to receive this award, it recognises all the huge community effort that has gone into the project. Blacknest Fields is such a special place and has brought the community together to care for it for future generations.

The CPRE Hampshire Countryside Awards continue to highlight and honour the dedication and achievements of individuals and groups working tirelessly to protect and enhance our cherished countryside.

Fire Training

In November, staff at Alresford Recreation Centre took part in fire training where they learned how to use fire extinguishers and understand their

specific purposes. Fire training in public spaces across the UK plays a key role in keeping people safe and managing risks. The law, under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, requires building owners and employers to take responsibility for fire safety, which includes making sure staff are properly trained.

This training usually covers spotting fire hazards, knowing how to evacuate safely, and using fire safety equipment like extinguishers and alarms. Public spaces such as shopping centres, schools, hospitals, and transport hubs focus on fire training to help staff and visitors act quickly and calmly in emergencies, reducing the chances of harm or injury.

Hanging Baskets 2025

For many years New Alresford Town Council have organised a subsidised hanging basket scheme for the town centre. This provides residents and businesses with a hanging basket, as well as barrier troughs and ‘up the pole’ planters around the town. In 2024 we experimented with not offering a watering service, however this was unfortunately not successful. As such we will be reverting back to offering a full watering service this year. The charge for this will be £40 (plus vat) per basket, which is the same as the price in 2023. The price will be the same for businesses and residents.

If you live or have a business in the centre of town, please look out for the hanging basket information and leaflet in the New Year.

Incredible Umbellifers

As we move through the colder months of the year, a hidden world of nature is revealed to us. Leaves and flowers fall away, exposing the structures beneath. Along the banks of our chalk streams, we can see strange shapes that were once cloaked in clouds of small white flowers: the dry remains of plants known as umbellifers.

The umbellifer family is very large and contains many poisonous species, but also edible ones like carrot, celery, parsnip, fennel, cumin, dill, and coriander. If you’re thinking that its name sounds rather like “umbrella”, then you’re spot on: the two words share a common root in the Latin word for “shade” or “shadow”. The family name itself comes from umbels – flower clusters that radiate out from the main stem.

In most umbellifer species, these flowers are white and bloom through the spring and summer. They usually decline as the weather grows colder, leaving dried out stems behind. But even in wintertime, umbellifers are of great value to wildlife: they provide cover when vegetation is sparse, and some insects take shelter inside their hollow stems. Let’s look at some of the river-loving members of this floral family!

If you’re familiar with Hampshire’s history, you’ll no doubt know that watercress grows

in our chalk streams. But if you find some in the wild, it could be growing alongside our first umbellifer. Fool’s watercress is a creeping perennial that loves stream margins and wet ditches, although it can also be found in wetlands. Unlike watercress – which is actually in the cabbage family – it smells like carrot when crushed.

Another similar-looking plant is lesser waterparsnip, which grows on damp ground or in the shallow edges of clear, flowing water. Because it spreads through stems that run over the ground, called “stolons”, it can play a key role in reducing riverbank erosion. One way to identify it is by looking for a pale ring at the points where leaves branch off from the stem. True to its name, crushing it releases the scent of parsnip.

Our riverbanks are also home to hemlock water-dropwort (Oenanthe crocata) – not to be confused with the more famous hemlock (Conium maculatum), which also grows near water. Its close relative, river water-dropwort (Oenanthe fluviatilis), is more specialised; it likes clean, lowland rivers with plenty of calcium. This makes our chalk streams fantastic habitats for this species, if they’re in a healthy condition.

Since many of the umbellifers look alike, some caution is needed around them. Several species are highly toxic if eaten, and some have sap that can cause skin irritation. Giant hogweed

in particular can cause painful photosensitive blisters after only brief contact; this invasive species can reach a towering 5m when fully grown, but is harder to differentiate in its younger stages. If in doubt, it’s best to admire from a distance.

Winchester City Council Budget 2025-2026

At this time of year, we are preoccupied with budget matters. Part of the income of the council comes from grants from central government, we are promised that the amount, (the settlement) will be set for a number of years, so that the council will have a known income for that period. We are promised a multi-year settlement for 2026 onwards, which would make financial planning a good deal more productive. However, we have been promised three-year financial settlements, annually for the last fourteen years, so there is an element of disbelief.

Why is this relevant? Councils have to manage some financial items, council housing is a particular example, for a long time. Loans for new housing may run for thirty years, if a council knows they have balanced books for at least three years they can plan more efficiently. It also appears that we may get slightly more than we were expecting in some areas, but we won’t know for certain until just before Christmas, so some cause for optimism!

‘Free’ Septic tank replacements

There has been a distinct lack of movement on this since Winchester finalised the monitoring charge. I have spoken to one local supplier who is confident that they will be able to offer new installations free of charge to the householder. At present they are considering whether to finance this upfront, on the basis that they will bear the risk should the market

in phosphate credits collapse, or to tie the installation to credits they already have a market for, tied to a specific development. The latter would be much lower risk for the installer, but will delay free upgrades. They are particularly keen to hear from those on shared systems – a higher yield than for one installation; and those close to water courses-, but on sound ground

Your Parish Councillors work hard throughout the year to make where you live a better place, we attend all meeting if we can and know how much they do, both in and outside of meetings. Do thank them the next time you see your parish councillors.

Looking out for our neighbours this winter

As the nights get longer and the air colder, it’s important this winter for us to look out for our friends, family and neighbours. The storms have been challenging for communities across the area with many of us experiencing power cuts and blocked roads. I’ve been in frequent contact with the power companies and County Council to get assurances they are doing everything they can to get power back online and roads cleared after disruptions.

Winter is also the toughest time for homeless people and the charities that support them like Emmaus and the Winchester Beacon. I recently visited Trinity Winchester who are working with StreetVet to support the

Could you join the 1 Million minutes campaign?

Home-Start Winchester and Districts is supporting Good Morning Britain’s 1 Million Minutes campaign, which runs throughout December, to help those experiencing loneliness. The campaign is asking members of the public to pledge their time to charities looking for volunteers.

Home-Start Winchester is a local charity that helps families with young children through their challenging times. Families struggling with isolation, loneliness, and many other issues, receive the support of a volunteer who

Thanks to their campaigning, the County Council scrapped its plans to cut homelessness services and the City Council worked hard trying to ensure no child in Winchester had to spend Christmas in a B&B.

In Parliament, the big focus has been on the Assisted Dying Bill. I’ve heard from many of you on this important question and it’s truly been inspiring to see the civility with which this issue has been debated from all sides. It was a difficult decision but ultimately I voted for the bill to progress. It can now be scrutinised and debated further before a final decision is made.

While activity in Westminster lessened over the festive period, I continued my work across Winchester and the Meon Valley listening to the concerns of local people and businesses. I met with the River Trust on a walk along the Itchen to discuss the problems they’re having with Southern Water and sewage dumping. I promised them I’d continue my fight in Parliament to hold them accountable and get our waterways cleaned up. Just before Christmas, I paid a visit to our posties at Royal Mail Winchester who were hard at work helping to deliver the festivities. We really couldn’t celebrate the season the same way without them, so they have my thanks!

After a whirlwind few months, it was nice to be able to spend this Christmas with my partner, Emma, and going on many walks along the River Itchen with our two lovely dogs – Frank and Moose.

I hope everyone enjoyed their Christmas and I wish everyone a successful New Year. My team and I, are back in action and ready to help, so if there are any issues or concerns you have, get in touch at danny.chambers.mp@ parliament.uk

will spend time in a family’s home helping them in the ways they need. Last year Home-Start supported more families than ever – but the charity needs more volunteers if they are going to be able to support all the families looking for help in the Winchester area.

“We recruit and train local volunteers, who have parenting experience,” said Service Manager Liz Stannard. “Once trained to Home-Start standards and confidently equipped, each volunteer is carefully matched with a family. Our volunteers visit the family at home for a couple of hours every week, for six to 12 months, or as long as is needed.”

“It has never been more important for us to talk about feeling lonely, especially following Home-Start UK’s recent survey carried out by YouGov, which highlights the scale of isolation felt by parents and carers during critical stages of their children’s development and identifies an urgent need for addressing loneliness for families across the country,” said Liz.

Almost 1-in-5 (18%) of parents surveyed say they rarely or never have meaningful contact with another adult outside their household, showing the extent of isolation experienced by many families, with over 4-in-5 reporting they have experienced feelings of isolation.

If you would like to pledge your time to support Home-Start Winchester and Districts, the next volunteer training course starts on the 30th January 2025 for five consecutive weeks (excluding half term) 9.30am – 2.30pm at The Carroll Centre in Stanmore. Jackie's County Corner

Happy New Year!

Thank you to everyone who helped provide so much joy at every Christmas event in December-: there was so much going on in every village! This is Lin and Mandy who are two of our sterling volunteers. Thank you!

Hampshire County Council’s Leaders are putting a brave face on life, but in truth, the County’s finances are in real trouble. HCC’s Medium Term Financial Strategy (MTFS) was agreed at the County Council at the end of November. It was not a decision about the Council Tax levy, but a factual financial statement to inform council tax decision making by February 2025.

During the period of austerity, central Government funding to local authorities fell by nearly 50%. The challenge now is for the HCC Cabinet to decide how to balance the books before it sets council tax for 25/26 in mid-February. You can more about the County’s budget on https:// www.hants.gov.uk/aboutthecouncil/ budgetspendingandperformance/

New Alresford Town Trust
- Looking after the trees in the Avenue and Broad Street

This is one of the Town Trust’s main responsibilities. In the Avenue and Broad Street we have over 160 mature trees, many of them over 150 years old, which need regular maintenance. A full survey of all trees was carried out in 2024, which set out a programme of works for the next three years, to ensure all trees are safe and in the best condition possible.

budgetandcounciltax and watch the council meeting live (or recorded) on www.hants.gov. uk

The financial picture is complicated, but dire. 1% on council tax raises approx. £8m. The County needs to raise an annual revenue of around £120m more than it does at present, ie: 15% council tax rise. To do this, they’d have to call a referendum as it is over 5%. The cost of a referendum is approx. £650K, adding to the burden. This financial difficulty, built up over the last decade, puts our services that we trust and expect at risk.

Drivers complain about potholes, but many of us especially worry for the provision of education and support for children and adults with special needs. Families get into difficulties for all sorts of reasons, and if the services aren’t available, it’s too easy to fall between the cracks, and sink rather than swim to safety. For me, this must be a priority.

As your Councillor, I feel very frustrated that the Council embarks on so many consultations including the Cart and Horses junction, and the cycling and walking strategy, when consultations cost so much, money is very short, but nothing changes. I have asked our MP to pursue the matter of M3 Junction 9 and the C&H junction in parliament.

Flooding

Ditches are the best way to direct water away from homes. Please don’t forget that if there is a ditch between your property and the road,

From the end of January, C&D Trees will be undertaking the necessary works, so you will see them around the Avenue and Broad Street dealing with deadwood and cutting back excess growth over roofs, footpaths and roads. We thank C&D Trees for their excellent quality work and their care for Alresford’s wonderful trees.

you are responsible for keeping it clear. You can see more detail on www.hants.gov.uk ‘search riparian responsibilities’ . Following the storms in December, please keep this Flood warning number handy, and sign up for alerts: www.gov.uk/sign-up-for-flood-warnings or Phone: 0345 988 1188.

Many of you have applied for a County Councillor grant in 24/25. As I hoped, the main beneficiaries this year have provided for green initiatives and young people in our communities. Grants have included ‘new experience inclusive trips’ for schoolchildren, young musicians and Guides, improved lighting for a theatre group, support for Home Start and Mencap projects, and an all-day free music festival.

Other projects include a solar shade for a village store and an innovative Prom Dress lending scheme hosted by Unit 12.

There is an ongoing County review of this Grant offer for 25/26. In view of the financial state of HCC, it is likely to be stopped or reduced. As I still have some money left in the pot- requests from groups not in this list are welcome! Deadline 23rd Feb- contact me first to check criteria to avoid disappointment.

Hampshire Farmers Markets have been running in Alresford Station car park since June 2023, and have built up a loyal customer base with

their monthly markets. All stallholders are local producers and rural businesses, offering a

range of foods, drinks, plants and crafts. From February, the market will be moving to a new location in Broad Street, and a new date –the third Sunday of every month. We believe that Broad Street will be more convenient for local residents and visitors, using the usual ‘market area’ outside the Horse & Groom and Tesco, and will bring more shoppers into the town centre.

Hampshire Farmers Markets regular stallholders include New Forest Smokery and Trout; Beres Bakes; Jakes Pies & Sauces; Honey Bee Happy; Fernlea Plants, and many others. The first market will be on Sunday 16th February, from 10am to 2pm.

South Downs announces inspiring initiative to help 75 schools

Seventy-five years ago National Parks were created as special places where people and nature could come together, bringing hope and joy to a nation scarred by war.

Now, 75 years on and to celebrate their recent anniversary, the South Downs National Park is helping 75 schools to add beautiful wildlife havens to their school grounds.

Schools across the National Park and surrounding areas will be able to apply for grants of up to £1,000.

The “ReNature Grants” can be used for a myriad of purposes, such as planting a wildflower meadow, planting trees, digging a pond, building a bee hotel, installing bird boxes or creating an allotment. The initiative ties in with the National Park’s ongoing ReNature campaign, which is fighting against biodiversity loss by creating scores of new wildlife havens across the region.

It comes after the National Park launched a new immersive film trail along the South Downs Way earlier this year to mark the 75th birthday. The “Your National Park” trail

celebrates the local heroes of the South Downs and explores their intimate connections with the amazing landscape.

Siôn McGeever, Chief Executive of the South Downs National Park Authority, said: “Seventy five years on since their creation, National Parks continue to welcome, inspire and reinvigorate people of all ages, while becoming hubs for the nation’s nature and climate ambitions.

“It’s wonderful to be announcing this new funding to support schools and young people as we mark this milestone for National Parks.

“Young people need access to nature more than ever before, not only because they are the future custodians of our planet, but also because outdoor learning brings so many benefits to their

health and wellbeing. Ultimately, we want nature to be everywhere for everyone and this new scheme is another step towards that goal.

“Young people can play such an important role in helping biodiversity bounce back and I’m excited to see the new wildlife havens that are created by this inspiring initiative.”

Half of the funding is being provided by the National Park Authority and the other half by the South Downs National Park Trust, the official charity of the National Park.

Applications can be received until 1 July and are on a first-served basis.

2025 – Broadlands Riding for the Disabled celebrates their 70th Anniversary Year!

2024 was a great year for Broadlands! We welcomed lots of new participants, their families and carers, to enjoy and benefit from the fabulous environment we share. We also welcomed lots of new supporters and friends to the many social and fund-raising events we have hosted. Several talks were held throughout the year; all of which were extremely well supported. The Cheerful Charlie talk sold out in record time. We held a Quiz Night, a wine-tasting evening, a trip to Liphook Equine Hospital, and our new Tea at Three Event all of which proved very popular. Our Open Morning attracted more visitors than ever before.

2025 is likely to be even more exciting as we celebrate our 70th Anniversary Year

Frank and Flora Welch bought Broadlands in 1946. Flora was a keen equestrian and had great interest, particularly after the polio epidemic in the early 1950’s, in the role of riding as a form of rehabilitation. In 1955 she held her first group of riders from Woodlarks in Farnham, a care home and activity centre for people with a range of disabilities. They were the first group to ride regularly at Broadlands. In 1964 Broadlands became one of the original members of the Advisory Council of Riding for the Disabled, the forerunner of the RDA. Sadly in 1975, Flora Welch died and her daughter Suzanne took over the running of Broadlands and is still involved today. The Group currently has up to 60 participants weekly who come and enjoy being with the ponies along with 70 regular volunteers. Broadlands continues to go from strength to strength. We now offer hippotherapy and equine therapy in addition to riding.

We currently have 10 ponies, specially selected for their calm, caring nature. Two of our ponies are over 23 years old and, with the average retirement age for a pony being 25, we are mindful that we will need to add new ponies to our team and train them to RDA compliant standards.

Our aim, therefore, for our Anniversary Year, in addition to securing the £120,000 funding required to cover our normal annual operating costs, is to raise an additional £30,000 to purchase, equip and train three new ponies to RDA compliant standards. Our first fund-raising event as part of our celebrations is our Online Auction of Promises which will be launched at the end of January. We have some amazing lots including some unique experiences and a weeks holiday in Cornwall! Anyone can bid for the items. Please keep your eye on our website where a QR code and link will be available. There is something for everyone!

Our biggest celebration will be on 20th June when we are holding a Platinum Party which we hope will be the party of the year! Live music, a magician and a casino will all be part of the fun! Again, keep your eye on our website for more information: www.broadlandsgrouprda.org.uk

Alresford Rotary People of Action in mid Hampshire

Many thanks to the great support the local community gave Alresford Rotary on the morning of 7th December when despite the best disruptive efforts of Storm Darragh more than 170 locally sourced and competitively priced Christmas trees were sold in a little over three hours enabling Alresford Rotary to raise more than £2000 for good causes.

“Probably Mid Hampshire’s Quiz of the Year 2025”…

Will take place at Itchen Abbas village hall on Friday 11th April 2025 aiming for a prompt 7.15 p.m. start. Tables of up to 6, £15 per player to include a hot supper. Box office opens on 1st January – pinnilegal@gmail. com / 01962 738788 – book early to avoid disappointment. Always a sell out!

10k Road Race and Children’s Fun Runs – HELP urgently wanted! Delivery of a successful event brings enormous reward and satisfaction and is one of the many reasons why Alresford Rotary continues to manage a series of major events through the year. In addition to the 10k, Rotary organises the bonfire and fireworks, selling Christmas trees in

Broad Street and the annual quiz in spring amongst many other contributions to the community. The group raises in excess of £20,000 each year that is distributed to local, national and international good causes.

Since 2008 one of Alresford Rotary’s major community and fund raising events has been the 10k road race and children’s fun runs normally held on Fathers Day (15th June 2025) In the 17 years since then we’ve had the same project manager in charge of the event. The time has come for this race organiser to step away from leading the event and so we’re looking to the local community for a replacement (possibly on a shared basis). The ideal person will have a mix of project management, people management and running experience. It makes a real difference to the success of the event having someone at the helm who is familiar with how running events unfold. Our original organiser was a keen runner before starting the 10k organisation and has built in the notion of incorporating new ideas each year, drawing on the experience of other runs, in an effort to continually improve the Alresford 10k and keep it relevant over the years.

Originally set up as a community running event, designed to give local runners the opportunity to take part in an organised licensed event, the 10k has grown in popularity over the years and is now part of the Hampshire Road Race League. There is a limit of 500 entrants each year to manage the impact on parking in the town and the disruption to traffic through the town as the runners leave Arlebury Park and run up West Street and down Broad Street. Entries regularly reach the 500 limit in the weeks before the event ensuring that the event not only delivers a high quality experience for the runners but also makes a small profit that, in recent years, has been donated to the Hampshire and IOW Air Ambulance.

The race organisation starts in January each year with the preparation of the necessary

paperwork and application for the UK Athletics race license. Entries, using an online system, open in March. Between January and early June the effort is around a couple of hours a week to keep on top of the organisation and manage the link to the HRRL. In June the time commitment increases a little with finalisation of the arrangements, organisation of the volunteers and management of the race day details. The total time commitment is about 60 hours spread over 6 months. As expected for an established event, the details of what’s needed are well documented and any incoming organiser will be well supported by both the current organisers and Rotary as a whole.

Alresford Rotary provide the organisational backbone of the event and the bulk of the marshals on the day. We also have the support of other regular volunteers, local businesses (Prospect Fencing, The Watercress Company, Chocolate Craft and others over the years) and Perins and Sun Hill Schools. The Scouts and the Brownies manage the water point on the route and are always praised for their energy and enthusiasm. Organisation of the event requires coordination of these supporters to ensure that everything needed on the day is in the right place at the right time.

If you think you might alone or with others have the right skills and are interested in helping Rotary to continue to deliver this successful event, do please get in touch as soon as possible!
