SPRING CLEAN find a fresh new home with PRADO The evenings are lighter – and the housing market brighter.

We’re not sure why everyone gets the moving bug in spring – but it’s our busiest time here at PRADO. And we LOVE it. The garden is blooming, there’s coffee on the deck and a basketful of properties to handle. In the Prado household we say, bring on the spring! Now really is the perfect time to get your house on the market. Blossom sets any home off nicely, and there are plenty of inquisitive fresh buyers, looking for a new nest. It’s also the best time for browsing if you’re planning to buy – and getting the right help and advice – that’ll be us then!

Friendly, personable, honest and open. Most proactive of all agents within our chain – which may have fallen through without his efforts. Helpful on local advice even after sale had gone through. Thanks Philip! Claire, Alresford

Hampshire Mum Culinary Aftermath

W

hen you plan a new kitchen there are so many things to stress over. Apart from where to find the right kind of cabinetry, colour and style, there’s a myriad of important decisions to be made about surfaces, worktops and white goods. Then there is the most important thing of all – the layout - that golden triangle of prep, cook and wash. Fortunately, at Chez Pagan space is at a premium and I can rustle up a roux while turning on the hot tap. My working triangle is about as isosceles as you can get. If only I was Vishnu I could stand in the centre and reach everything all at once, such is the compactness of my bijou kitchen. Yet despite being limited to two arms and one pair of hands, I seem to be the only Pagan able work the logistics of the kitchen. I mustn’t be harsh though, (no I really mustn’t),The Husband has become somewhat of a dab hand in the culinary department. Paella is his signature dish along with the aptly named Jerk Chicken- only kidding – and last weekend he produced a lamb tagine for ten! Yes, I am truly blessed as the menopause has left me in fear of large-scale catering, something I used to take in my stride. Stars I and II have also become creative in the kitchen. Star II is famed for profiteroles and his ability to gut fish and (rather worryingly) gain enjoyment from it. His artistry in cake making is renowned despite the practice of eating half the mixture prior to baking. “Didn’t rise very well Mum.” Well, not surprised as he only had half the quantity of mixture. Star I has taken gastronomy by storm, cooking up all manner of exotica for Lovely Girlfriend to dine on. Steaks sizzle away while salads are lovingly prepared with stones popped from avocados with a flourish. So what’s the problem, I hear you ask? Easy, it’s called Culinary Aftermath!

10

Yes, I am genuinely delighted that The Husband and Stars are mastering all things culinary, but the dark side of their new-found expertise eludes them, that of cleaning down the kitchen. Now to be fair,The Husband has improved no end and is now constantly berating the kids for the monumental mess they leave in their wake. Stars I and II seem to have adopted the Disney approach to cleandown: the kitchen utensils, (and they do seem to use every one I possess) will levitate across the kitchen and into the dishwasher, probably accompanied by classical music much like Sorcerer’s Apprentice. Mind you, that scene didn’t turn out too well, so they probably feel their decision to “just leave it” is the right one. As I said, there are many decisions to be made in kitchen design, so why then when I had a myriad of choices did I go for shiny? Trust me, it is not the sensible option when living with three male chefs and one Pagan Pup- not that he cooks but he shakes. But all is not lost; who is there to ensure the culinary aftermath is sorted? Why it’s dear old (very old) Cinders aka Sandra. Yes, rest assured I’ll be there wiping various splats off the doors and mirror tiles.Whose idea was that?! Re-polishing and liberally spraying the disinfectant cleaning product, reloading the dishwasher as it didn’t clean the first time round, taking the precariously balanced china from the cupboards and stacking it in a way so as not to injure anyone. Then finally throwing out all the bits and bobs left on the floor. Voila! The Pagan cooking hub back to its gleaming best! “Mum, is it ok if I cook for the guys on Saturday night?” Note to self: get the jet washer out of the shed.

Drove Farm Old Alresford

A

nother Spring in the Arle valley. The blackthorn has nearly finished flowering, and the hawthorn is just coming into leaf. A kingfisher dives, a flash of exquisite iridescent blue. How blessed we are to be able to work in this ancient landscape, formed by the power of nature for millions of years and shaped by humans for millennia. As landscape architects, we approach each project with respect for the layers of history created for centuries before the canvas becomes ours to work with. Each landscape shelters within its folds memories of those who went before us, and invariably, marks have been left by those who inhabited it. Some of these marks are visible, others we discover through our research, or through conversations with local people who have known the landscape for longer than we have, and some memories never quite reveal themselves in full, and we can only detect a hint of their presence. The landscape around Drove Farm has considerable timedepth and a long association with people who settled in the vicinity of the river during the Neolitic, Bronze and Iron age. There is evidence of multiple and successive historic settlements, Celtic and Saxon on the valley sides, and Roman settlement on Fobdown just above Drove Lane. So for centuries, the landscape at Drove Lane has seen successive human interventions, and new layers have been added continually to old frameworks. One such example

is the ancient earth boundary bank which runs south of the public footpath. This earth bank is many centuries old. We found the oldest written reference in a Saxon charter in the British Library

Image courtesy of the British Library /Imagination Design Ltd.

From this manuscript, a grant by King Ine to Winchester Cathedral of Land at Alresford, dated 701 (more than 1300 years old) it is evident that in Saxon times, the Arle was considered the headwater of the Itchen, which was then called the Icene, a name of Celtic origin (the majority of rivers in England were named by the Celts). The trees on these banks are of much more recent origin. The trees (lime and chestnut) planted some 150-200 years ago, formed part of a much more recent boundary associated with New Place (now Arlebury Park). Under new ownership of the stretch of the river Arle between Drove Lane and The Dean, and associated land

As landscape architects we influenced the choice of natural materials for the new house that was recently completed. The flint and stone came from the very geology that underpins the riverine landscape – flints, picked from the meadows, and limestone, from an ancient Cretaceous rock formation at much greater depth with outcrops on the Hampshire/Dorset border. Insofar the landscape is concerned, we worked with Natural England, the Wildlife Trust and the Environment Agency. The first phase of landscape restoration focused on the riverine landscape, consisting of the river, a Site of Special Scientific Interest, carrier stream, ponds and meadows. The sheetpile weirs which compartmentalised the river were removed so the river once again flows uninhibited, allowing fish and other animals to move freely. Connectivity between the carrier stream and the river was re-established as a result of which the carrier stream is once again a nursery for young fish and invertebrates. The ponds, very degraded as previously part of a commercial fish farming operation, were de-silted, with thousands of cubic meters of silt removed, and are now largely free of algae. All industrial, concrete remnants of the fish farm were removed. A wet meadow was created alongside the river to replace the lost water meadow landscape, and the upper meadows are restored to traditional species rich hay meadows, once so characteristic for the river valley, but in decline in many places. It is a joy to see that cowslips once again grace the fields in Spring, and when the meadows are in full flower later in the Summer, they are heaving with bumblebees, butterflies and other invertebrates. This in turn attracts bats and other animals who feed on the insects. The field boundary along Drove Lane was re-planted with hawthorn hedgerows, which encloses the field to the north, but the southern boundary which borders the public footpath was left open. This field was planted with wild grasses characteristic of traditional hay meadows. As this field was over enriched with phosphates associated with the watercress bed gravels that were dumped on this field for years, wild flowers, which do not thrive under these soil conditions, will be introduced once the phosphate levels have dropped. Poppies, pioneers of recently disturbed soils, colonised the meadows in their thousands already in the first year. Sheep graze this meadow in the aftermath of hay production, a pastoral sight which has been welcomed by many users of the public footpath.

The Christmas tree plantation was felled early this year. It was abandoned as a productive site, and the sale of Christmas trees ceased many years ago. Hundreds of trees had already fallen in high winds, and Southern Electric was forced to clear a large section below the power lines to avoid the risk of interruption of power supply to the northwest of the town. By definition, biodiversity potential of single species commercial crops is very low, so the plantation had little if any value to wildlife. The coniferous trees were also very incongruous with the traditional river valley landscape, which typically consists of small meadows enclosed by hedgerows.

north of the river, we were asked to assess the history of the landscape before considering proposed new interventions.

The Christmas trees have been removed, and the field is now being re-graded. The excess chalk from the excavation for the new house, now completed, will be spread in thin layers on the chalk subsoil, before the topsoil (a finite resource) is dressed over this again. The meadow will then be seeded with traditional hay meadow grasses, and wildflowers. This year alone, more than a thousand large hawthorns have been planted to form new hedgerows, and further new field boundary trees will be planted to recreate some of the ancient boundaries which have disappeared over time. Some of the felled Christmas trees have been recycled to improve the surface of much widened public footpaths. In the process, all barbed wire along the footpaths has been removed, which will provide a safer and more pleasant experience. We all know this landscape is very precious to many users of the public footpaths around Alresford (Old and New), who have followed the works with interest, sometimes trepidation. However, works are now near completion and a clearer picture has emerged, which has led to greater understanding. Many of the new layers added to this landscape acknowledge and honour the past. At the same time they are an important investment in the future, and will hopefully create valued future memories for the generations that will follow. LAWN MOWING MADE EASY – OR AT LEAST A LITTLE EASIER!

How often is lawn mowing doing more harm that you might think?

L

awn mowing is one of those garden tasks that many people think they can do themselves. Some get it right and do a wonderful job; others are regularly getting it wrong. Perhaps you’d be surprised to learn how much harm you can do to your lawn by not getting the

basics right.

the height again in the dry hot weeks of summer when the longer grass will protect the soil from drying out and capture more dew overnight to water the lawn. Then, lowering again with the lush growth that comes in autumn. Finally you want to be going into winter with longer grass, better able to survive the bad weather. Humans are by nature creatures of habit. Think about your day and the things you do regularly, the same way each time. We get ready for bed in the same order or drive to work the same route. It makes things easier for us as we don’t have to think about the mundane stuff. We just do it. Most people are the same with their lawn mowing. Rarely do they vary their approach or direction of mow. They start at point A and finish at point B. As you mow your lawn the weight of the mower and the forward motion pushes the grass leaves in the direction you are mowing. Over time the grass begins to lean over this way making it harder to get a clean cut.Varying the direction of mow helps to promote healthy grass growth and makes for a more attractive lawn. It also reduces the chance of ruts forming from the wheels of the mower pressing into the turf repeatedly. Now to look at mowing frequency; let’s face it, we are all busy people. Most of us work hard all week and often hard on the weekend too. Speak to those lucky enough to be retired and they usually tell you they’ve never been busier. When we are busy or tired there is a tendency not to get everything done on time. The problem with mowing is that the grass just keeps on growing. Miss a mow and it’s longer than ever.

By now you might be wondering; just what it is that you need to know before mowing your lawn? When it comes to lawn mowing there are really three main considerations; height, direction of cut and frequency. Let’s look at each of them in turn. Mowing height is a fine balance between keeping the grass tidy and looking superb, along with allowing the grass to have enough leaf to photosynthesise and remain healthy. Plants use the green pigment in their leaves, along with sunlight, to synthesise nutrients from carbon dioxide and water. Remove too much leaf and you are reducing the ability of the grass plants in your lawn to create food. Weakening the grasses and allowing diseases to take hold. The grass dies back leaving bare patches where weed seeds and moss spores can settle, germinate and spoil the appearance of your lawn. By all means mow your lawn short, but don’t do it suddenly. Only ever reduce the mowing height gradually over time. If you want to mow short then ensure growing conditions are right. Warm but not too hot. Moist, but not too much rain, and of course adequate fertiliser. Speak to a lawn care professional to ensure your lawn is receiving the treatments it needs to keep it healthy before you reduce its chances of it feeding itself. Ideally you should be varying the cut height throughout the growing season. Starting high as grass growth slowly begins in spring. Lowering as the growing season warms up and growth is more vigorous. Raising

16

As the grass plants grow taller the stems of the plants extended into your cutting area. When you do finally catch up you are inevitably taking off too much leaf. Cutting into the stem of the grass plant shocks the plant. Making it less able to recover from the mow and more susceptible to diseases and die-back. Plus the lawn looks scalped and untidy. Mowing can feel like a never-ending job and grass growth can be unforgiving. Lawn care professionals have access to growth suppressants. Applied to your lawn they reduce growing height and encourage more compact, dense growth. They also encourage root growth, creating a more drought tolerant lawn. Speak to a lawn care professional to find out more. Mowing is a Marmite kind of job; those that love it really love it and those that don’t thoroughly hate it. After all, if you work hard all week, or if you are at a stage in life where hard work is behind you, then maybe there is something else you’d rather be doing than mowing the lawn. Create some you-time and leave your lawn care to the professionals. You might be surprised by how affordable a professional lawn care plan is and I’m certain you’ll be impressed by the professional results. Star of the Show is Good Design

I

t’s that time of year again – the Chelsea Flower Show. In all its glory, this annual event provides us with a feast of inspiring garden designs cleverly depicting how skill and imagination will bring to life that stretch of land outside your kitchen or sitting room door. It is true that many of the designs we see at Chelsea are not practical or suitable for our own mere mortal of a garden, however, every design is inspiring and on our return home we long to find that little something that will make our own outdoor space special too. Garden Design has never been more popular, yet most of us still universally believe it is ‘something anyone can do’. In some ways, it is true. Many gardens are quite breathtakingly beautiful where a designer has not set foot inside the garden gate. Mostly, these gardens have evolved over time and sit very happily cheek by jowl within whatever environment they have grown up in. This is fine for those who are happy to potter and let the years, toil and ultimate experience take care of how their gardens will look a couple of decades later. The rest of humanity needs a helping – or a designer’s hand! – to obtain quickly and effortlessly a captivating garden. This is because most of us lead very busy lives and we want someone else to create for us what we don’t have time for ourselves. Also, great garden design truly enhances the exterior of

18

our homes and can add not only value to our properties, it can also greatly increase the chances of a quicker sale. Furthermore, most of us want a garden with the minimum of maintenance and to achieve the balance between something that is attractive and requires little attention, needs skilful planning. Today, great garden design needs to depict a lifestyle that reflects stylish 21st century living where the trend for expanding our living areas beyond the four walls of our homes, comes complete with outdoor kitchens, fireplaces, elaborate lighting and all weather garden sofas. Garden design has come a long way since Chelsea first opened its doors over a hundred years ago when it was primarily a flower show and the show gardens were the poor cousin. Perhaps it will one day go full circle and in the meantime, if you want a truly stunning lifestyle garden, you need the talented eye of a good designer.

STUDENTS AND VETERANS WORK TOGETHER TO CREATE RHS CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW GARDEN

S

Working with plants and flowers or simply experiencing a beautiful green space can improve health and wellbeing, aid rehabilitation, reduce depression, anxiety and stress-related symptoms while also helping to improve self-esteem, confidence and mood. Gardening can positively impact a local community by bringing people together. Elements of The Force for Good garden will be re-homed following RHS Chelsea 2018, will be donated to community groups helping more people to learn, grow and heal through gardening. Lucy Thorpe, Horticultural Therapist at Help for Heroes said: “We are delighted that Sparsholt College students chose to focus on the recovery journey of wounded, injured and sick service personnel and veterans. We have seen first-hand how horticulture and nature courses have empowered Veterans. In some cases, this has led to those we support achieving a City and Guilds qualification and going onto study further RHS courses at Sparsholt college.”

Sparsholt and Help for Heroes Team for RHS Chelsea Flower Show

parsholt College and the charity Help for Heroes have announced their partnership for RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2018. Their garden, The Force for Good, will tell the powerful story of the role horticulture plays in the recovery and ongoing support of injured British Armed Forces personnel and their families. Individual stories are told through the three elements of the garden as the team of college and former-military gardeners inform visitors of the journey from injury or illness through to recovery and beyond. The Force for Good garden is a demonstration of how horticulture has given these individuals a second chance at life and how everyone can benefit from its therapeutic benefits. Sparsholt College’s Horticulture students are working collaboratively with their Help for Heroes counterparts to design and create The Force for Good, a garden of three different sections. The students were inspired by conversations at the Help for Heroes Recovery Centre, Tedworth House in Wiltshire where those being supported by the charity take part in gardening activities. The positioning and grouping of plants in the ‘Surviving’ section of the garden will show the disorientation, conflicting emotions and mental state of those being supported by Help for Heroes before they enter any recovery programme. As they progress through their journey to ‘Stability’, the garden will portray a number of horticultural activities undertaken at the four Recovery Centres nationwide with a focus on crop production and horticulture skills. The third and final section of the garden ‘Support’ will show how planting and landscaping, including a still pool and seating, can create an area promoting recovery and ongoing support. The stage when an individual becomes an active member of their community again, and can make a positive impact in society once more. The garden will engage all of its visitors’ senses, using relevant sound tracks in each section. White noise will help convey chaos and confusion, natural sounds will give a sense of nature and the outdoors and a symphonic piece of music, composed especially for Help for Heroes, will provide the backdrop to peace, calm and relaxation. Sparsholt College’s lecturer, horticulture and garden design expert Chris Bird is leading the student team: “RHS Chelsea Flower Show is the most famous show of its kind and whether you are an experienced, high-profile designer or just getting started in a horticulture career, it is an incredible, career-enhancing experience. We are very proud to be working alongside Help for Heroes to share the powerful stories of those the charity supports, whilst showcasing the therapeutic and restorative benefits gardening has for health and wellbeing.”

Community FRENCH MARKET 2018

N

ew Alresford Town Trust kicked off the Easter weekend with a very successful French Market being held in Broad Street on Easter Saturday. The event was attended by roughly many thousands of people. It was a very welcome sight to see Broad Street so full of people enjoying the variety of stalls. The fresh bakery stall, cheese and cooked meats stalls had constant queuing and the baker struggled to keep up with demand. As well as a variety of other stalls there was a Vintage Music stand which entertained the crowds. The event was organised by Trustee Pam Stevens together with Muriel Charles the Manager of France at Home, and Paddy Walshe was extremely helpful in putting the cones and barriers out to accommodate the stalls. All the stallholders had a good and profitable day and Muriel said “they would love to come back next year as they find the people of Alresford and visitors to the Town very friendly and accommodating”. The shopkeepers in the Town especially Tesco Express with their early morning deliveries, were all very helpful and welcomed the extra people in the Town. The weather stayed dry for most of the time, despite how wet it was on Good Friday. The Easter weekend then continued with the Eel House having its first Open Day on Easter Sunday.

EEL HOUSE OPEN DAY 1ST APRIL 2018

T

he first Open Day of the 2018 season proved a remarkable success, despite the wintry conditions. Visitors were able to see the newly erected Donors Board containing 92 names and highlighting the efforts of the late David Goodman. Dorothy Hamilton organised the roster of 6 volunteers who together with stalwarts David Woods and Paddy Walshe, got the Eel House opened starting with visitors from Southampton at 11.00 a.m. There was a constant flow of visitors locally as well as far afield as Solihull and elsewhere, who were first enchanted by the quaint notice boards, by Ellie the resident eel, and by the Eel House built in the 1820’s and refurbished over the last 10 years. There were 151 visitors during the day who donated £138 towards further work on the building. The next Open Day is on 20th May. New volunteers are always welcome as are all visitors – contact Dorothy on (01962) 734619 or E.Mail dorothy.wales1@btinternet.com. Entrance is free but donations are welcome.

OFFICIAL OPENING OF ALRESFORD MEN’S SHED

H

ampshire County Councillor Jackie Porter officially opened the Alresford Men’s Shed, the area’s first “WI for chaps”. Pictured here with (L to R) Peter Tudor, Graham Smith & Brian Durham.

Cutting the ribbon among the benches and lathes of the Men’s Shed’s temporary home in The Dean, Alresford, Cllr Porter applauded the hard work that has gone into building Alresford’s new not-for-profit meeting place and workshop for men. Speaking to the packed room of Men’s Shed members and supporters, Cllr Porter said: “The whole community will benefit from this practical new facility, it’s an invaluable space especially for men to meet like-minded chaps for a cuppa and a chance to bond over their woodworking, hobbies and DIY repairs.” Having received its start-up funding from Hampshire County Council and Alresford Pigs only late last year, charity champion Cllr Porter praised chairman Brian Durham, fundraising trustee Graham Smith, and the five other trustees responsible for getting the Men’s Shed registered as a charity and up and running so quickly. Alresford Rotary member Peter Tudor was on hand to present a cheque for £500 to Graham Smith for the Shed Funds, adding to the generous financial support received from The Alresford Pigs, HCC, WCC, Coop, and Alresford Ladies Group as well as discounts and materials from local companies. The Shed works closely with the Alresford Pigs Association and have a link in Shed Trustee Nick Denbow who is training “Shedders” to maintain the mobility scooters and other mobility aids that the Pigs recycle to Alresford residents who need them. The Alresford Men’s Shed is open Monday and Tuesday afternoons, and all-day Thursdays. So the next time that you are passing the Shed at one of these times, call in to see what we do –whether you are interested in the prospect of joining or contemplating bringing a job to us - you will get a warm welcome and maybe even a cuppa. Membership works out around £1 per week. If you are interested contact Ralph Pointer 01962 734833 or alresfordmensshed@gmail.com

Wellbeing ALRESFORD SURGERY NEWS

Bank Holiday Closures

We have a number of Bank Holiday closures in May. We will be closed on Monday 7th May & Monday 28th May. Outside surgery hours urgent medical care is provided by Care UK. The service is available by telephoning 111 or 01962 718697 if 111 is not available from where you are calling. NHS 111 is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It can provide medical advice and details of the best local service that can provide care. A team of fully trained call advisers, supported by nurses, assess patients’ symptoms and put them directly in touch with the people who can help; for example, an out of hours doctor, a district nurse or an emergency dentist — or it may be something as simple as a 24 hour chemist. NHS 111 can also send an ambulance, without delay, if required. The Southampton, Hampshire and Portsmouth NHS 111 service is provided by the South Central Ambulance Service, with a call handling center based in Hampshire.

When should you use it?

You should use the NHS 111 service if you urgently need medical help or advice but it's not a life-threatening situation. Call 111 if: • You need medical help fast but it's not a 999 emergency • You think you need to go to A&E or need another NHS urgent care service • You don't know who to call or you don't have a GP to call • You need health information or reassurance about what to do next

Dementia Awareness Week 21st-27th May

At present many sufferers remain undiagnosed until a late stage which means that they and their families and carers can miss out on appropriate care. Timely diagnosis should help people plan their lives better and access available treatment and support.

What is dementia and what can I do to prevent dementia?

Dementia is more than a poor memory. For example, it is normal to forget why we have gone upstairs, or to have to search out brains for a name sometimes. Dementia is a collection of difficulties that also includes the ability to manage our affairs and to plan things to an extent that interferes with daily functioning. It is caused by the brain being damaged by diseases such as Alzheimer’s or by a series of strokes. Some new cases of dementia can be prevented by tackling “vascular” risk factors, such as blood pressure and cholesterol. Looking after your heart is also good for your brain! Not smoking, avoiding excessive alcohol, keeping weight down, exercising, keeping mentally active and maintaining social interactions are all worthwhile.

Welcome to our new Medical Secretary

A warm welcome to our new Medical Secretary, Justine who joined the team in March.

Travel abroad – Please allow up to 2 months before departure for vaccinations

If you are travelling abroad and think you may need advice and vaccinations from us you must complete a questionnaire (available from reception or from our website) and make an appointment with a nurse. We have become aware that patients are often leaving it too late to seek this help, some vaccinations need a course spread over a few weeks so please make apply in good time – up to 2 months before departure. HEALTHY LIVING AND YOUR HEARING

D • • •

enise and Fiona are the local Age Concern Hampshire ‘Village Agent’ volunteers for Alresford. Their role is to help older people in their local community to find information and services such as:

Getting out and about: finding transport for shopping, organised trips, medical appointments and local activities Around the Home: finding reputable trades people to help in the house and garden Money Matters: your entitlement to claim benefits grants and loans

It is well known that our diet and lifestyle habits have a big impact on our general health. But many people forget these factors are also crucial to maintaining healthy hearing, especially as you grow older. Thankfully taking care of your hearing is easier than you might think and it’s never too late to start. Here are a few important principles to follow. Watch your weight: Studies have found that people with higher body mass index (BMI) and larger waistline measurements are more likely to have hearing problems than those who are slim. Get active: Taking regular exercise will help lower your risk of hearing loss. But becoming more active doesn’t necessarily mean hitting the gym or taking up a new sport. Experts advice at least two and half hours each week of moderately intense exercise, which can include walking, swimming, cycling, aerobics or dancing. Reduce your risk of diabetes: Hearing loss is twice as common in adults with diabetes. Experts believe that uncontrolled diabetes damages the tiny nerves and blood vessels of the inner ear, leading to hearing loss. Type 2 diabetes is almost entirely in your own hands, so reduce your risk, by losing weight and exercising now. Kick the habit: A new study has shown that smokers have a 15% higher risk of hearing loss than non-smokers. So it’s important that you quit or reduce your smoking and reduce passive exposure to tobacco smoke. Switch the fats: Switching from saturates to monosaturates and polysaturates will help keep your arteries healthy, which could help improve blood flow to the ears and cut your risk of hearing loss. Saturated fats are found in fatty meats, full fat dairy products and cakes and biscuits. You’ll find monosaturates in olive oil, avocados, seeds and nuts, while polyunsaturates can be found in oil-rich fish and pure vegetable oil. Follow a GI diet: Research has shown that diets high in sugar and high GI carbohydrates could detrimentally impact hearing in the long term. So cut down on added sugars, and replace refined carbs such as white bread with wholegrain varieties that contain more fibre and release energy more slowly. You can call Denise or Fiona on 07969 376023 if you’d like any more information, or help with getting a hearing test in your area. Or, if they are unavailable call Age Concern Hampshire on 0800 328 7154 or email villageagent@ageconcernhampshire.org.uk

Butterfly revival dashed by wet, gloomy weather BUTTERFLY CONSERVATION AND UNITED KINGDOM BUTTERFLY MONITORING SCHEME

T

wo declining butterflies suffered their worst year on record in 2017 after hopes of a butterfly revival were dashed by a chilly snap in spring and a gloomy, wet summer, a study has revealed. Grayling and Grizzled Skipper recorded their lowest numbers since records began as difficult weather conditions caused problems for some of the UK’s species. There had been hopes that UK butterflies would bounce back after the summer of 2016, the fourth worst on record. And although butterfly numbers last year were up on 2016, they were still way below average with 2017 being the seventh worst year on record, the annual UK Butterfly Monitoring Scheme (UKBMS) led by Butterfly Conservation, the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (CEH), British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) and Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) revealed. Grizzled Skipper and Grayling had their worst year on record for the second year running. Grizzled Skipper was down 9% compared to 2016 and the population has now more than halved since the 1970s. Grayling declined by 6% compared to 2016; its numbers have shrunk by 63% over the last decade. The threatened Dingy Skipper saw numbers fall by 22% compared to 2016 and the rare Marsh Fritillary experienced a decline of 12% over the same period. But it wasn’t just rare species that struggled – the Large White one of the UK’s most well-known and widespread butterflies - saw its numbers tumble by 19%.This common butterfly is now also in a state of long-term decline. There had been hopes for a good butterfly year as many spring species emerged earlier than usual following a warm start to 2017. Butterflies need warm, dry weather during their flight periods in order to feed and mate. But a cold snap at the end of April saw other spring species such as the Grizzled Skipper and Duke of Burgundy struggle. The second half of the summer was cloudier and wetter than average which caused further problems for species already struggling from a combination of habitat loss and climate change. The other two common white butterflies also had a poor year. Small White was down 16% and Green-veined White down 2%. But many species did enjoy a better year than 2016.The widespread Red Admiral was up 78% compared to 2016 and Comma numbers rose by 91% compared to 2016. Both species are increasing over the long term. The warm start to the year helped some spring butterflies such as the threatened Pearl-bordered Fritillary whose numbers rose by 57% compared to 2016.This is a species that has also benefitted from targeted conservation work.

28

The rare White Admiral bounced back following a terrible 2016 with an annual increase of 157%. Small Copper was up 28% compared to 2016 after a series of poor years and had its best year on record in Northern Ireland. Professor Tom Brereton, Associate Director of Monitoring at Butterfly Conservation, said: “There is little comfort in these results for the UK’s hard-pressed butterflies. “2017 was the seventh worst in the 42-year series and makes it five below average years in a row. On the positive side, there is much good conservation work happening across the country, which will aid any recovery should we get a helping hand with the weather.” Dr Marc Botham, Butterfly Ecologist at the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology, said: “The weather can have a serious impact on individual species’ numbers each year as results from counts in 2017 show. “However, populations can and do bounce back providing suitable habitat is available, and it is the long-terms trends, particularly the declines of a number of common and widespread species, which are of great concern.” Sarah Harris, Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) National Organiser at the British Trust for Ornithology, said: “Huge thanks to the hundreds of volunteers who persevered with their butterfly counts and contributed to this valuable dataset. As well as year-to-year changes, the latest results highlight the longer-term differences in fortunes between species, such as the decline in Large White and increases in Red Admirals. We hope the butterflies - and the volunteers - have a much better season this year." Anna Robinson, Monitoring Ecologist at JNCC said: “It is really important to have long-term studies such as the UKBMS to help us understand changes in species populations, and how we can target action to help reverse declines. “Whilst we can’t control short-term weather impacts, we can take action to address other factors such as the habitat loss and degradation that are thought to have contributed to long-term negative impacts. In the midst of many negative trends, it is encouraging to see the increase in Pearl-bordered Fritillary numbers as this species has benefitted from targeted conservation work.” The UKBMS has run since 1976 and involves thousands of volunteers collecting data through the summer. Last year a record 2,693 sites were monitored across the UK. The scheme is organised and funded by Butterfly Conservation, the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology, the British Trust for Ornithology and the Joint Nature Conservation Committee.

SWIFTS. WHY WE SHOULD CARE?

ISSU E 1 39 | M AY

LOOKING AFTER WINNALL MOORS, WINCHESTER

S

wifts are arriving now and will be with us for just a few months this summer bringing spectacular action, drama and excitement to our skies. These amazing birds have shared our buildings ever since the Romans came to Britain. They still breed in our eaves, gables and even holes in walls but these traditional nesting places are declining as modern and renovated buildings usually exclude Swifts. In consequence Swifts have declined by about 50% since 1990.

W

innall Moors nature reserve offers a peaceful contrast to the nearby city centre. The reedbeds, streams and meadows alongside the River Itchen are important for a host of wildlife including wetland plants, breeding birds, water voles and dragonflies. Large areas were established as water meadows in the 17th century. Shallow channels were dug and laboriously maintained to flood the meadows in winter so that sheep could graze on an early crop of grass. Some brick structures used to control the flow of water can still be found. The Moors had a key role to play during the floods of February 2014. As seen in the photo, much of the site was used to hold back water which would otherwise have been running through the streets and properties of Winchester. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust manage the site, with help from various voluntary groups. Hampshire Conservation Volunteers have been working here when required for many years, maintaining fences to control grazing and cutting back fast-growing shrubs and trees, such as willow. Extra gates were installed at the Durngate entrance to ensure that the cattle do not escape into the city centre. On our next visit, Hampshire Conservation Volunteers will be fencing in the more remote, and normally out-of-bounds, northern part of the reserve. We will be there on Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th May, meeting at 10am in the car park in Hillier Way near the rugby club. Any help would be welcome, tools are provided, just wear old clothes and bring lunch. If you would like to come along, contact Alan Thurbon for more details on 023 9232 5570 or see our website at www.hcv.org.uk 30

Fantastic facts about Swifts • The UK's Swifts have one of the longest migration journeys in the World, 22,000 kilometres (14,000 miles) every year. They fly to and from Equatorial and Southern Africa spending much of the winter in Mozambique and the Congo. When you see them in spring they have just completed this epic journey. How sad if they arrive and can find no suitable nest sites. • Except for adults while rearing their single brood, they spend all their time on the wing, never landing. • They feed on flying insects all collected on the wing and may fly considerable distances to find food for their young. What you can do to help • The website www.swift-conservation.org includes useful sections particularly: How to make your home a Swifts home, Helping Swifts in your Community and What to do if Swifts are threatened by building work. It is really important to request that building work plans include provision for Swifts. Parish and other Councils can play a key role here. • There is now a Hampshire Swift Group www.hampshireswifts.co.uk with a Facebook page so it is easy to get involved. The main aims are recording where swifts are breeding, safeguarding these sites and helping to create or influence the creation of new nesting sites. • The web site www.actionforswifts.blogspot.co.uk is a great source of information and inspiration too. • The most important action is to CARE! Swifts are fun! Swifts enhance our lives with their dramatic flight and exciting calls! They also eat billions of harmful insects every single day. Please help Swifts. The Nature festival being held at Selborne provides a walk to observe Swifts with Tim Norriss on Sunday evening 27th May( pre booking necessary) and activities and information on the Hampshire Swifts stall on Monday 28th May, plus a talk by Tim Norriss that day too. A thoroughly enjoyable day out, this nationally acclaimed FREE food festival draws together the local community & food lovers from far and wide for a day of food and fun for all. The entire centre of New Alresford in Hampshire becomes a huge street festival, with Hampshire Farmers' Market and others creating a large food market showcasing the very best local producers. If you're interested in arts, crafts, jewellery and clothing, items for house and garden, you'll find them and much else besides in the large festival market. Music and dance are central to the festival, so find time to enjoy performances by the bands, Morris dancers and local school children. One of the main highlights of the festival is the street cavalcade at 10.30am with jazz musicians, Morris dancers and local school children accompanying the Watercress King and Queen who sit atop a horse and cart. Entertainment is provided by the many musicians and performers and there are activities for children of all ages mainly in East Street. The World Watercress Eating Championships continue by popular demand, and look out for our new Street Entertainers. Car Parking & Road Closures We work very closely with the brilliant local groups who volunteer on the day to help guide visitors to our Car Parks. We politely ask that you use these Car Parks to ensure the event works well for all visitors. This is a Free Festival and the modest parking fees go towards supporting all those local volunteer groups that support the town across the year. Thank you.

T

ISSUE 139 | M AY

he Curtis Museum has been lucky enough to receive the fossil remains of a large ammonite dating from about 93 million years ago. It was found in January 2018 by contractors digging a trench for a new water main. Ammonites are rarely seen in the Lower Chalk, although William Curtis, one of the founders of the Museum, found a number in the chalk quarries around Alton in the 19th Century.

This specimen, measuring approx. 7 x 16 inches, is yet to be identified. Ammonites of this sort are similar to the modern Nautilis; however some species have almost straight shells. The fossil was donated to the Museum by Alton Town Council, and is on display upstairs. There is an interesting article on Cretaceous Alton in Alton Papers No. 8, on sale in the Museum. An extract follows“Going back about 90 to 100 million years, the Alton area would have been very different and is thought to have formed the bed of a warm shallow sea. It was during this period, the Upper Cretaceous, that the creatures which swam within this sea, or burrowed into or crawled around on the seabed, left their accumulated remains, eventually forming the chalk we see today. The Upper Chalk is a characteristically white soft bedrock, while the Middle and Lower Chalk tend to be more greyish.” (Michael C Parkin, Cretaceous Alton in Alton Papers No. 8, 2004)

HAMPSHIRE PEOPLE

The Forum talks with Liz Earle MBE 44

L

iz commenced her career as a Health and Beauty Editor for Woman’s Journal magazine, during which time she was encouraged to write the first of her books on wellbeing and nutrition – Vital Oils.

A television debut followed, covering health and beauty for ITV’s This Morning program. This led to her own show, Liz Earle Lifestyle, which ran for three series. In 2015 Liz returned to This Morning and she now has a regular ‘Inside Out Beauty’ slot. It encapsulates the belief that ‘you are what you eat’ and all the benefits a good diet brings to health and beauty. Towards the end of last year, Liz also filmed a mini-series on living well for This Morning in Sardinia and Greece, which was screened in January 2018. In 1995 she co–founded Liz Earle Naturally Active Skincare, now the global brand Liz Earle Beauty Co. Liz was awarded the MBE in 1997 for services to the beauty industry. Although the Liz Earle Beauty Co. is now owned by Walgreens Boots Alliance, Liz remained a global ambassador for the brand until stepping away completely in 2017. This allowed her to pursue her commitment to her quarterly magazine Liz Earle Wellbeing, which she founded in 2015, her regular podcast series and You Tube channel, and her Fairtrade jewellery range, Liz Earle Fair and Fine. Liz lives with her family on a farm in the West Country. She is an ambassador for the Sustainable Food Trust, Love British Food and Compassion in World Farming and was instrumental in the development of the food labeling pressure group FLAG (Food Labeling Agenda). Although engrossed in her new life, she still has a soft spot for Hampshire. Does Liz have a favourite place in Hampshire? I love visiting Chewton Glen Hotel for its amazing cookery school and restaurant food, incredible treehouses and lovely spa. Your journey is extraordinary: television presenter, prolific author, developer and co-founder of a global brand, ambassador, and charity founder. How do you maintain a healthy work-life balance? Family life comes first, so I get the really important dates such as school plays and concerts, holidays, parents’ evenings, etc. into the diary at the beginning of the year and then schedule work and social events around them. I particularly try to book my travel times and work trips during term-time when I’m not missed as much.

With travelling so much is there one thing you really miss and would take with you if you could? My photo albums. I make a single leather-bound album for each year, filled with the best family pictures. I have over thirty of these now and they are one of most treasured possessions. How would you describe yourself? Entrepreneur, writer, ecologist, philanthropist, organic farmer or all of the above? I would describe myself as an author, wellbeing entrepreneur, TV presenter and farmer. What inspires you? I find nature and the changing seasons endlessly inspiring, which is why Liz Earle Wellbeing is a quarterly magazine that embraces a new season in every new issue. My love of nature is also reflected in my jewellery collection, Fair and Fine which is inspired by my lifelong love of botanicals.

F EAT U R E I SSU E 1 39 | M AY

Born in Portsmouth, Liz Earle is the best selling author of 35 books, a TV presenter, an entrepreneur and a farmer.

What fears do you have for the future of people’s health in the UK? I think that there is a high level of awareness now about the ‘you are what you eat’ message, but the next challenge is to make people aware that it’s actually more than that. It’s ‘what we eat has eaten’ that really matters and that impacts on your health and wellbeing. We need to think much bigger picture. Are your children following in your footsteps? I have 5 children ranging in age from 7 to 26 so it’s difficult to say what my youngest one will end up doing at this stage! However, I’m very fortunate to have my eldest child, Lily, working with me as the Digital Editor for Liz Earle Wellbeing – she’s incredibly talented and it’s lovely to get to spend so much time with her. We work really well together. Three things you can’t live without. My family: I’m at my happiest when at home on the farm with all five of my children. A daily dose of probiotics: Since writing my last book, The Good Gut Guide, I’m more aware than ever of the benefits of probiotics and I like to start my day with a glass of kefir, a live super-yoghurt drink packed with powerfully beneficial probiotics that gives me a real boost in the morning. My smart phone: I love connecting with my Liz Earle Wellbeing magazine readers on social media, especially Instagram, which does seem to foster the nicest online community. I have my own account too @LizEarleMe. What next for Liz Earle MBE? On a personal note, having recently travelled through Sardinia and Greece for a mini-series for This Morning on Blue Zones and the secrets to living long and well, I’ll be putting some of what I learnt into practice this year. This includes weaving ‘pockets of still’ into my day, spending more time with my family and making vegetables and legumes the centre of my diet, enjoying even more seasonal and locallygrown fruit and veg – especially anything green! On a professional note, the next step for Liz Earle Wellbeing, my quarterly digital and print magazine, is to go global! There can be no doubt Liz Earle will achieve all she sets out to do. Her new book The Good Menopause Guide by Liz Earle is published on 8 March 2018. (Orion Spring, £25). Lizearlewellbeing.com 45

To a Skylark

A

BY CLAIRE THURLOW

fter the Beast from the East and endless grey days, it felt like Spring would never come. April may bring showers (and lambs, of course), but clocks go forward and everywhere I look are green shoots and unfurling buds. I start to notice the dawn chorus and by May we’re at peak bird-song. How can I possibly choose a favourite? The melodious blackbird who serenades me from the garage roof? Or the friendly robin who chirrups from the holly hedge? No, for my money the most talented vocalist is often impossible to see, but certainly makes itself heard – the skylark. Milder weather and increased daylight mean I have no excuse for not leaving my sedentary desk-life for a walk around the village. Following narrow lanes and bridleways, I pass woodlands and fields of emerging crops, and if I’m lucky, it’s in (or rather, over) the latter that I’ll spot a skylark. It’s predominantly a farmland bird, seeking open countryside – fields of cereal or grass, but it’s also partial to heathland, sanddunes and or grassy spaces such as golf courses or airfields. I couldn’t give the skylark many marks for looks. Size-wise it comes in somewhere between a sparrow and a starling. The brown, streaky plumage with buff underparts is non-descript but does provide camouflage against roaming predators, a necessity for a ground-nesting bird. The crest on its head, which it raises when alarmed, is the only feature to detract from the skylark’s plainness. But you don’t have to be handsome to attract a mate! Male skylarks compete for territories and female attention by aerial singing. They take off almost vertically, ascend as much as 300 metres and let rip with an amazing outpouring of song. There are reports of these performances lasting anywhere from five minutes to an hour. When its wings need rest, the skylark may

50

continue to sing on a handy fence post. It’s a rolling, endless flurry of notes, which in his ‘Ode to a Skylark’ Shelley described as ‘joyous, clear, and fresh.’ Standing beside a field of oil-seed rape on a misty morning, I’d say the poet was spoton with his description. I can enjoy the song, but the singer is invisible in the cloud. Life isn’t easy for the skylark, and its numbers have declined rapidly since the 1970s, giving it red status on the list of endangered British birds. It likes to nest in open fields where the vegetation is no taller than 60cm, but autumn-sown crops have grown too tall by the time breeding season comes around. It will also nest in grass, but mowing for silage brings more risks for the young, and a pair of skylarks may have to try two or three times in a season to raise a successful brood. Their diet includes seeds of grass, weeds and insects which are destroyed by herbicides and insecticides. The skylark’s natural habitat seems at odds with modern farming, despite efforts of many farmers to accommodate it. As a gardener trying to balance pest-control with support of wildlife, I can sympathise. Organic practises and set-aside have helped, although the skylark is averse to the left-aside margins of fields close to high hedgerows – possibly because of predators. Bare patches in the middle of fields, so-called skylark ‘plots’ have been tried with limited success. However, where landowners and farmers grow crops for winter game birds such as pheasant and partridge, this has also provided food for the skylark. Hopefully, the outlook will improve for this marvellous bird, and even if you don’t see one on a walk, enjoy the song. According to an old gamekeeper’s tale, if you see a skylark flying high early in the morning, then it’s going to be a beautiful day.

t was a real pleasure to open the Men’s Shed in Alresford this month- open to men of all ages, and now available in other communities! There’s one in The Worthys too. Contact me if you’d like more details. The Hampshire Chamber of Commerce is seeking Mobile Phone ‘notspots’, albeit that it will be different for different providers. The Chamber want to map and campaign to reduce the number of deadspots. Please go to this website to report yours. https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/#inbox/16248299c80e7914 As the spring growth starts in the garden, you can turn your compost into soil conditioner! Order you delivered-to -your- home cheaper compost bin (from £17.98 plus delivery) from HCC- just go to www.hants.gov.uk/smartliving This month’s Consultation is the Short break consultation: this will close at midnight on Sunday 3 June 2018 Respond online: https:// hampshirecc.researchfeedback.net/s.asp?k=151981324778 This is for the proposed changes to Hampshire County Council’s Short Break Activities Programme for children with disabilities. As yet, Hampshire do not know if this affects 5000 or 9000 children. It seeks feedback on a number of ways that the Short Break Activities Programme could be provided from April 2019. The new service aims to maintain a programme within a much reduced budget, that provides breaks for parents and carers of disabled children, while providing fun and educational opportunities for the children and young people receiving them. HCC has received £3m of the Gov.t pot of money to repair the holes that sprung up after the bad weather. You tell me that potholes are really bad, and taking too long to mend. Please continue to report holes on www.hants.gov.uk, go to ‘report a pothole’, as you see them and keep a record of your tracking number: if they are not filled promptly, I will report them too. Police cover and surveillance. I have met with Sgt Wood (who is now back at the Alresford Police Station and covers the outer ‘doughnut’ of Winchester) to discuss several issues including the recent series of break-ins: she was pleased to report the sentencing of one of those that did the Cheriton/Medstead run for 6 years.

Animals DENTAL DISEASE IN CATS AND DOGS

D

ental disease is an increasingly common health problem in our pets and it is estimated that 7 out of 10 pets over the age of 3 years have some form of dental disorder. Dental disease can be a painful and serious health issue for your pet and although some dental problems can occur through natural wear and tear the build up of plaque and tartar is preventable. Plaque is a pale yellow-white deposit consisting of bacteria and food debris which builds up on the surface of the teeth and under the gums. Over time this plaque hardens (calcifies) and becomes tartar which is more yellow-brown in colour. The tartar harbours the bacteria which cause inflammation of the gums (gingivitis) which can in turn lead to gum erosion and loosening and/or loss of teeth or infection. Worse still, left untreated the poisons that the bacteria produce can enter the pet’s bloodstream causing blood poisoning (septicaemia) and subsequent damage to organs such as heart, liver and kidneys. Symptoms of dental disease in addition to visible tartar on the teeth and reddened gums would be excess drooling or bleeding from the mouth, pawing at the mouth, loss of teeth, dropping food or loss of appetite and foul smelling breath. Dental disease can be treated

by your vet who may take an x-ray of your pet’s head to ascertain the severity of the problem and any loose or affected teeth will have to be removed. Additionally, antibiotics and pain killers may be prescribed to help with the infection and pain. Any remaining teeth will be descaled and polished to remove any residual plaque and tartar. Prevention of dental disease is always better than cure as not only is it better welfare for your pet but is also cheaper to prevent than to treat. It is always advisable to get your pet’s teeth checked regularly by your vet and descaled by them if needed. The most effective way to then keep the teeth clean is to brush your pet’s teeth using proper animal specific toothpaste. Some kibbles and dental chews are specially designed to help remove the plaque and should be of a size that the pet has to crunch and chew rather than swallow whole. Chew toys/chew treats are good boredom breakers but their use must be supervised. There are also mouth rinses (animal specific) and products which can be added to the pet’s water to help soften the plaque when used over a long period of time. Contact your vet or veterinary nurse if you have any concerns over your pet’s dental health or want to discuss the different methods of dental hygiene in more detail. Regular check-ups and good oral hygiene will help your pet live a longer healthier life and may well be more easy-going on your pocket.

Storming Basing House

L

ouder and louder, we heard the drums of General Waller’s Parliamentarian soldiers marching through the woods. My family were standing in the Easter drizzle beside a block of Royalist musketeers who were preparing to defend the mighty barn at Basing House. Priming, loading, ramming, but not firing their muskets, they rehearsed their drill one last time. Red coats appeared between the trees and their wearers stepped into formation: General Waller’s ‘London Trained Bands’ were about to attack. As one, the Royalist block raised their muskets and fired. Two Parliamentarian soldiers fell, but the rest fired back. Royalist pikemen stepped forward to defend the musketeers as they reloaded their guns using wooden gunpowder charges, strung from bandoliers. The pikemen stepped back and the massed guns fired again. With the smell of gunpowder in the air and sound of gunfire in our ears, we weren’t whingeing about the Bank Holiday weather any more. The Sealed Knot was transporting us back to November 1643 with their re-enactment of a siege of Basing House. We weren’t just spellbound watching the soldiers slugging it out on the battlefield, their families and friends helped us appreciate the past too. ‘Look at Daddy - he’s running away!’ said a little girl in a woollen dress, cotton cap and leather slippers. ‘Don’t let him hear you say that - it's a strategic retreat,’ replied her mother, wrapping a shawl round herself ready to run back to the site of the house. She advised me to take my children there too. ‘It’s always best to get there ahead of the soldiers, that way you don’t miss any of the fighting.’ I was grateful for my children’s modern waterproofs, jeans and trainers as we sprinted off. When we reached the site, the Royalist garrison had come out to defend the house but the battle had not started. Instead, it looked like a flag waving competition was going on.Vince Pearce, who organised the event, explained to me afterwards that the regiments were displaying their colours. ‘Being a Civil War, many of the commanders knew each another and would offer terms before conflict. A commander would “put his standards to the fore” to show the enemy that his troops were there and make the offer that if they agreed to give up ground, they would be allowed to march away unharmed.’

60

Neither side would give up ground this time. Blocks of pikemen collided like rugby scrums and the musketeers were joined by cannons firing wads of grass. As the battle surged up and down the slopes beside the house, a commentator explained the history. Apparently the weather was very authentic: in 1643 the battle halted because rain, sleet and snow prevented the guns from firing and General Waller retreated to Basingstoke to commandeer food and shelter from the reluctant inhabitants. In 2018 the grey office blocks on the horizon didn't look as if they would offer much in the way of rest or reinforcements, but I understand the reenactors found sustenance in the local pubs afterwards. Women and children were called 'useless mouths' during the siege, but this grossly underestimated their contribution. In the 'Living History Village', we saw non-combat re-enactors demonstrate how they prepared and served food; and spun, wove and felted clothing. They showed that even with a civil war raging, ordinary folk managed to 'Keep Calm and Carry On', three hundred years before the phrase was coined. In 1644, the tables were turned: General Waller defeated a Royalist army in the battle of Cheriton and the Royalists retreated to Basing House. As well as being a Royalist refuge, the house controlled the road southwest from London (now the A30). It was too strategically positioned to be spared and in 1645, Oliver Cromwell arrived with a huge army, breached the defences and took the house by storm. By order of Parliament, what remained was ‘totally slighted and demolished’, with the stones of the house offered free to anyone who would cart them away. Nowadays, only parts of the basement, foundations and earthworks of Basing House remain. It’s a sad end to one of the biggest and most impressive private homes ever built in Tudor England, but the Sealed Knot breathe life into it again during this annual event. In 2019, it is also planning an event with the Battle of Cheriton Project to commemorate the 375th anniversary of the battle of Cheriton. STEVE BRINE M.P

A

s I am sure readers of FORUM have noticed, the environment – and especially concerns about single use plastics – have shot up the political agenda in recent months.

The Prime Minister recently launched a landmark 25 Year Environment Plan which sets out how the UK will improve the quality of air and water, create richer habitats for wildlife and crucially, tackle plastic in the oceans. Furthermore, and to wide acclaim, we’ve said in coming years we will crackdown on plastics by eliminating all avoidable plastic waste. So the announcement just before Easter that DEFRA will consult on plans to introduce a bottle deposit return scheme in order to increase recycling rates and slash the amount of waste polluting our land and seas was welcome. I am convinced this is right as we must act now to tackle this threat and curb the millions of plastic bottles a day that go unrecycled. We have already banned harmful microbeads and cut plastic bag use, and now we want to take action on plastic bottles to help clean up our oceans. Locally, the commitment to on this agenda is as strong as ever and I recently met a working Mum who lives in Winchester with a passion for the environment. As a working Dad with the same, we hit it off and you have to take your hat off to the momentum Michele Ingerslev has generated for her Final Straw Winchester campaign which is asking local businesses to stop using single-use plastic straws. Her recent straw ‘amnesty’ was, as you can see, a huge success! You can find out more and back Michele’s campaign at www. facebook.com or follow her on Twitter at @FinalStrawWinch Finally this month, South Western Railway have now published a report of the outcome of the public consultation into their likely timetable changes from 9th December 2018. As you know, I maintain very strong links with SWR and have been highly critical of what I perceive to be a poor start to their tenure but am committed to work positively with them for the benefit of constituents. If you use the service regularly (from Winchester or Micheldever Station perhaps) you will want to familiarise yourself with the details which can be accessed, along with my formal response to the consultation, via my dedicated pages at www.stevebrine.com/trains More of my work, in Westminster and here in Winchester at www. stevebrine.com or find me at www.facebook.com/SteveBrineMP Steve Brine MP for Winchester & Itchen Valley

ALRESFORD & DISTRICT NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH ASSOCIATION

T

he Merrie Month of May is here, and we become conscious that there are more outdoor activities and festivals taking place. There are two large outdoor events happening in Alresford in the coming weeks … the Watercress Festival on 20th May and the Alresford Music Festival on 9th June. There are probably features or advertisements on these events elsewhere in this month’s Forum. Both these events are great for the town in that they bring in trade and revenue to our local businesses and help to generate a sense of identity and community spirit. What is more, they are largely aimed at different segments of our community which hopefully also gives Alresford a feeling of inclusivity … there’s something here for everyone. Alresford is classed as a low-crime area, with most incidents being caused by people from outside our area and we in Neighbourhood Watch would like to keep it that way. So, given that both these festivals will attract visitors from far and wide we ask you to be those extra eyes and ears that our local police really appreciate by remaining vigilant and on the look out for any suspicious activity. Large crowds can offer opportunities for pickpockets, so keep your wallet/purse, mobile phone and handbag secure. Also remember to ensure that your car is locked with nothing on display on the seats or footwells, even if your car is parked right outside your house or on your driveway. Further afield at the Matterley Bowl, on 12th May there are the Gauntlet Games in aid of Naomi House and Jack’s Place and then over the first weekend in June there will be the British MotoCross Grand Prix. Again, a little bit of extra vigilance would not go amiss, though both events do try and keep people onsite once they arrive there by providing all the facilities they should need. If anyone has suggestions for topics that they think would be suitable for future Neighbourhood Watch articles in the Forum, please get in touch - e-mail contact.adnwa@gmail.com CONTACTING ADNWA OR POLICE: ADNWA website: www.neighbourhood.watch.alresford.org e-mail us at: contact.adnwa@gmail.com CRIME IN PROGRESS: RING 999 NON-URGENT ISSUES: RING 101 CRIMESTOPPERS: 0800 555 111

BRAMDEAN POP UP CAFE

A

lthough the snow was inconvenient the great community spirit that spontaneously appeared in those stay-at-home days reminded people of one of the reasons that they chose to live in a village.

In order to capitalise on this good feeling, Bramdean villagers are starting a POP UP CAFE in the Village Hall in Wood Lane, Bramdean to be held on the first Saturday of each month starting on 5th May from 10.00am to 12.30pm. Tea, coffee, cakes and croissants will be on offer. Everyone will be made welcome and hopefully it will benefit not just those who live in the village but also walkers and passers-by who fancy a cuppa and a taste of village life. Any profit that is made will be returned to the community. So if you can, please pop in to the POP UP CAFÉ and meet some old acquaintances or make some new friends.

LONG BARN CHRISTMAS BAUBLE BENEFITS PIGS

F

or the past five years, Long Barn in Alresford has produced a bespoke Christmas bauble depicting a winter scene from our town. Using artwork from local artist Jen Boardman, these unique and collectible decorations have become a must-have item for locals and visitors alike. Interest in the exquisite 2017 piece depicting the main Christmas Tree in Broad Street surpassed all previous years with over 600 being snapped up at Long Barn’s shop, café and plant nursery on Bishops Sutton Road. As the Christmas bauble was specific to Alresford, Long Barn directors Richard Norris and Jane Marsden thought it would be good to divert some of the proceeds to the Pigs, knowing that the funds would be used to help local people and organisations throughout the year. The Pigs have benefited from this donation since the first bauble was created in 2013, but 2017s record sales meant that a bumper cheque for £276 was presented to Pigs Deputy Chairman Mark Emmerson by Long Barn’s Shop Manager, Debbie Goodyear. Alresford Pigs Association is extremely grateful for Long Barn’s generosity, which over the years has helped us to assist worthy causes in and around our town.

ADVICE COLUMN FROM CITIZENS ADVICE Lesley Rose, Advice Services Manager for Citizens Advice Winchester District explains how to challnge a Personal Independence Payment (PIP) assessment decision.

Q A

I have a long-term health condition but I recently had my Personal Independence Payment (PIP) reduced after a re-assessment. I want to challenge the decision where do I start?

There are two stages to challenging your PIP assessment decision. The first stage is known as mandatory reconsideration and involves asking the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to take a second look at your assessment decision. Normally, you’ll need to contact the DWP within a month of your assessment decision being made, and it’s best to do so in writing. Under some circumstances, you can ask for mandatory reconsideration up to 13 months from your assessment decision date.

[Pictured: Pigs Deputy Chairman Mark Emmerson receives a cheque for £276 from Long Barn’s Shop Manager Debbie Goodyear. To Mark’s right is artist Jen Boardman with the 2017 bauble]

Long Barn’s Marketing Manager Laura Brown commented: “It’s always a joy to work with artist Jen Boardman, who has, yet again, created a charming picture of our local community for last year’s bauble. We are delighted by the response, our customers are always so incredibly supportive and really enjoy collecting each new edition of the Bauble. It’s a tradition we hope to continue in the years to come - as It’s such a wonderful way for us to celebrate our community and raise funds for all the great work the Alresford Pigs do throughout the year” The Alresford Pigs Association is a small charity comprised of people who either live or work in Alresford and come together to raise money to given financial help to those in need in Alresford and the surrounding villages. We have given money for: • Organisations such as the scouts, guides, sports and youth groups

64

Your letter should list all the reasons why you don’t think your PIP award should be reduced. Make sure you provide evidence to back up each point you make, such as practical examples, medical records and supporting letters from specialists who are treating you. If you don’t have the required evidence available, you can submit it separately at a later date. Once the DWP has looked again at your assessment decision, you’ll receive a Mandatory Reconsideration Notice which says if your request has been successful or not. If it is, your original award will be reinstated and your payment backdated. If you’re unsuccessful, you could choose to progress to the second challenge stage. This is where you appeal your assessment decision by taking your case to tribunal. If you need advice on a Personal Independence Payment or would like help completing the form, then please do contact your local Citizens Advice. Citizens Advice Winchester District has offices in Winchester and Bishops Waltham. Opening times and details of outreach locations can be found at www.citizensadvice.org.uk/winchester-district or by calling 03444 111 306.

CAPTAIN NOEL SPICER SIMSON 1881 - 1915

A

s the centenary of the end of the First World War approaches, I thought your readers would be interested in this local hero, who is commemorated by a plaque in Itchen Abbas church. Noel was single and the son of Frederick Simson and Dorothea Spicer, who in turn was the daughter of William Spicer, the rector of the church for 25 years. The Spicer Simsons were a remarkable family. Frederick was in the Merchant Navy, became a dealer in gold sovereigns, lived in India before farming in Tasmania. The family then moved to Le Havre where Noel and his twin sister Noelie were born. There

were ten children in all, including another set of twins, Muriel and Mildred. Muriel was the wife of my great uncle. Two of Noel's brothers achieved fame - Theodore became a sculptor specialising in bronze medallions of famous people e.g. Roosevelt, George Bernard Shaw, HG Wells. Geoffrey, wildly eccentric, became a Commander in the Royal Navy after triumphing over the Germans in the First World War battle for Lake Tanganyika, which at one point involved transporting two large motor boats 146 miles through the bush! This daunting challenge was reputedly the inspiration for the film African Queen. Noel, like several of his brothers, was sent to board at Stubbington House School, "the cradle of the Navy". He became a career soldier, serving in Jersey, Hong Kong and Nigeria. At the outbreak of war he was a Captain in the Royal Garrison Artillery. A few years ago I came into possession of a transcript of his war diary and other correspondence. Noel joined the British Expeditionary Force in August 1914. As an artillery officer, he was not involved in trench warfare, and for the first few months was constantly moving his heavy guns around the French and Belgian countryside which meant that he and his men had to sleep wherever they could: under canvas, in bomb damaged buildings, farmhouses and occasionally guest houses, even a chateau! Sleep deprivation and sourcing food for themselves and their horses was a constant challenge. To be continued ...

Winchester City Councillor Monthly Report Sun Lane Outline Planning Application The Local Plan has been controversial throughout its journey (as is the case in many places around the country), hence the reason the Government indicates the number of new homes required and the assessment being conducted by an Inspector, who is impartial to the area assessed. As Councillors, City and Town, we objected to the numbers vigorously and repeatedly, believing they were too high, and raising issues with the highways around the impact the number would have on our community. The Government Inspector stated that Sun Lane is acceptable but wanted to see an all-ways roundabout. The main sticking point has always been around the traffic management and the Inspector would have looked at traffic volumes, both current and predicted, and would, through experience, understand the tolerances and highways abilities to deliver schemes. We are now facing an Outline Planning Application in May where Planning Compliance is the vital issue. It will not be a question of voting arbitrarily whether or not the development proceeds; but can the application be refused on the basis of sound Planning Law. If the application is opposed on any other grounds, then the Developers can merely take the application to the Appeal Courts. Equally, if the application is approved, the decision can be referred to a Judicial review, which is a type of court proceeding in which a judge reviews the lawfulness of a decision, or action, made by a public body. Within this process, we need to fight to ensure that promises made to the Town are kept, and that those controlling off-site works, such as Hampshire County Council deliver the best possible solutions for the Town.

LEADER funding available to support rural enterprise Rural businesses are encouraged to apply for grant funding from the Fieldfare LEADER Local Action Group (LAG) to support projects that will create jobs and boost the local economy. Farmers, foresters, growers, rural businesses and rural communities have until the end of August 2018 to bid for a share of a £1.6million fund across the East Hampshire, Eastleigh & Winchester areas. Further details about Fieldfare LEADER can be found at www.Fieldfareleader.org.uk Winchester Sport & Leisure Park This project has recently received pre-planning advice from WCC and SDNP in order to address issues they are concerned about in terms of meeting planning policy. In addition, the Football Association, English Cricket Board and sports’ National Governing Bodies are commenting to ensure the new facility meets requirements for the level of competition played in the Winchester District. In addition, there are Advisory Groups working on the project on green credentials, design, operator appointment and accessibility with residents and experienced local organisations who test the recommendations. The approximate split of user groups for the sports centre are 30/70 for sports clubs/every day residents making individual use. The planning application is expected to be submitted in June following the next Cabinet (Sport and Leisure) Committee meeting

on Thursday 7th June at 4.30pm in the Walton Suite, Guildhall. City Council announces purchase of Coventry House, Barfield Close WCC has announced a decision to purchase Coventry House, Barfield Close from Vaultex UK Ltd. This was purchased through the Strategic Asset Purchase Scheme (SAPS) and is expected, in the future, to be redeveloped to create further parking on the edge of the City and to take advantage of the Park & Ride service or pedestrian routes to travel into central Winchester. Trade Waste Action Plan WCC is working to tackle unsightly trade waste bins in the City centre – with some positive early results in Hammond's Passage - a problem area in terms of this issue, being cleared and deep cleaned. Growing concern from residents, visitors and the business community that trade waste was spoiling the presentation of the historic city centre WCC has worked closely with Winchester BID, Hampshire County Council, businesses and waste collection companies to find more acceptable storage arrangements for their waste. WCC has made previously unused space in Middle Brook Street car park available for business to store their bins. Station Approach Development The Station Approach exhibition for March 2018, Broadsheet, Public Realm Strategy and Masterplan Framework are all available for viewing on the WCC website (http://www.winchester.gov.uk/ projects/5741/station-approach ). Although the formal consultation period has closed for the March exhibition, comments may be contributed at any time, for feeding into the project as it progresses at stationapproach@winchester.gov.uk Consultations : Parks and Green Spaces Visitor Survey Closes 30 Nov 2018, Opened 1 Dec 2017. Contact : Landscape & Open Spaces Team 01962 848 533 slord@winchester.gov.uk , https://winchester.citizenspace.com/landscape-open-spaces/parksand-green-spaces-visitor-survey/ Feedback : Tree Planting 2017/2018 A consultation was open to the public from 6th January to 2nd February 2018. Residents indicated WCC should aim to plant more trees within the City/District. Comments from the public will be considered during planning for the tree planting programme for next season and WCC are aiming to increase our planting numbers over the coming years. The planting process has to be carefully planned by our Tree Officers in order to ensure we’re diversifying our tree stock and not planting in inappropriate places.
