POTS & PLANTERS FROM HAMBROOKS OF TITCHFIELD

Pots and planters Big, bold and beautiful. Modern garden designers tend to lean towards this vision when asked to use pots and planters to create architectural interest in clients’ gardens. Historically, ornate traditional planters made in the beautiful materials of marble, cast iron and lead have long been used in gardens. Although in their heyday, these types of planters sat proud and majestically on the gates of country houses or adorned large sweeping terraces. Beauty of the material More often than not these planters remained empty, with their owners seemingly happy to allow the beauty of the material speak for itself. There is a lesson here somewhere. Pots and planters look great overflowing with the bright colours of seasonal flowers, or helping to show off a specimen shrub. However, the effect of a beautifully made pot in the less expensive material of clay, can often make a bigger impact. The humble flowerpot The Egyptians were the first to make use of clay producing the humble flowerpot to move their plants about. Of course, in our more recent centuries, it is the Greeks who are more famous for their beautiful terracotta pots. Also, the Cretans have long used their local clay to make big pots to store grain, olives and olive oil. Earthy tones Authentic Cretan pots are fired up to 1150c, which means they can withstand the most brutal of our winter frosts. So in recent decades these very same pots, in all shapes and sizes have been finding their way to our shores. With their earthy tones of rust and tan, they have become increasingly popular as features in both the traditional and modern garden. Modern Lines For the more adventurous the huge range of frost resistant fibreglass pots is increasingly popular with people wanting something a little different. Not only can you have any shape or size to suit your garden, you can choose any colour under the rainbow and they come in a variety of finishes. Fibreglass pots are strong, lightweight and durable and planted with a colourful display of plants add a touch of class to your contemporary or courtyard garden. Because they are so light, these fibreglass planters are easy to move, which allows for more experimental positioning. These planters are particularly useful in the northern areas of the garden where you can use them to help to brighten a dark or shady spot. Finally, they are relatively inexpensive. Finishing touches No matter what material or style suits your tastes and garden, pots and planters help to add the personal finishing touches to your outdoor space. Frame the borders of patios, terraces and balconies or use planted with small trees or specimen plants to add height to small courtyards or gardens. You can plant with evergreens, colourful seasonal plants, trees and bulbs. The choice is yours. Hambrooks of Titchfield www.hambrooks.co.uk 01489 572285 10

Garden

recover from scarification as it is a harsh process. Not only do they need time, but also warm, wet weather is essential too.

AUTUMN IS THE IDEAL TIME TO RENOVATE YOUR LAWN. LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT WHAT CAN BE DONE

O

ften lawns take a bit of a beating over the dry, hot summer months. High temperatures and low rain-fall is not much help for lawns. In fact, warm and wet autumn weather creates the ideal conditions for your lawn to recover quickly from any renovation work carried out over the next few weeks. Plants need warmth, moisture and good levels of light in order to grow well. Usually all three of these are present over the autumn months, making now the ideal time to improve your lawn. So, you might be wondering why your lawn is looking a little worse-for-wear and what can be done about it now. If your lawn is suffering with bare patches or weak grass growth in certain areas, what might be the cause? Understanding the cause of these problems is the first step to correcting them. There is little point in spending time and money treating the symptoms of your poor lawn if the underlying cause has not been addressed. All that will happen is the symptom will return again next year and you’ll have to deal with it all over again!

Both scarification and aeration create ideal surface conditions for over-seeding. Unlike re-seeding, where the existing vegetation is removed completely and a new seed-bed created for the sowing of a new lawn, over-seeding works with what you already have by adding new grass seeds to your existing lawn and helping to blend areas of weak growth into other areas of your lawn more naturally. It’s also far less labour intensive, uses fewer lawn seeds and is much more economical. It is however really important to deal with any weeds before re-seeding begins. New grass plants are susceptible to the treatments used to kill lawn weeds. Older, existing lawn grasses are robust enough to withstand these treatments. Therefore manage the weed issue first and then get new grass plants growing. Remember that once germination begins your new grass seeds need moisture to survive. They won’t be able to manage times without water until they have established roots. If it doesn’t rain then you need to remember to keep them watered for the first few weeks, however regular rain is almost guaranteed over the autumn and early winter. Any nutritional issues should also be addressed before over-seeding and autumn lawn renovation works begin. After all, your existing lawn will need all the help it can get to recover and the new seed introduced will be looking for the right nutritional support to help it develop and thrive. Applying the correctly balanced autumn fertiliser is essential to preparing your lawn for the tough winter months ahead. It helps develop the roots and will keep your lawn looking green and healthy throughout the winter without increasing the need for mowing.

Bare patches and weak growth are often symptoms of compaction where the soil is so solid that it affords the grass plants no real opportunity to grow well. The compacted soil drains poorly due to the lack of air gaps within the structure of the soil itself and the grass roots find it difficult to spread, resulting in stunted growth and weak plants more susceptible to disease, drought and death. Relieve the compaction first by aerating the lawn, and then you can begin to introduce new grass plants by over-seeding. Before you think about over-seeding you may want to consider whether your lawn needs a good raking. Or for larger lawns, mechanical scarification. Not all lawns need it however, but if they do it’s really important to carry this process out before the weather gets too cold and the grass stops growing. Lawns need time to

14 14

Finally, autumn is the ideal time to apply treatments for ant’s nests in the lawn which have been a real problem in recent years. It’s important to deal with these before they become dormant over winter resulting in those unsightly mounds of soil they bring to the surface next spring as the colony increases the size of its underground nest. Specialist treatments are available to deal with lawn ants. Speak to a lawn care professional now to plan ahead for the perfect lawn next year. You might be surprised how much improvement can be made this year and you can then enjoy your renovated lawn throughout the autumn and into next season. Community HARVEST FESTIVAL AT THE CHURCH IN THE WOOD

W

hat does the word harvest mean to you? Is it something produced by a combine harvester or is it the result of many hours spent in your garden? To the congregation of the Church in the Wood it means something useful to the Winchester Churches Night Shelter to which their harvest is sent. The Night Shelter caters every day of the year for about 20 people. Food items need to be things like tins of soup, custard, chopped tomatoes, stew or rice pudding so that gifts from several different people can create a meal for that number.Vegetarian meals are also useful as are basics such as sugar, flour, cereals ketchup, biscuits or custard powder. It is important that all are harvested well within their ‘best before’ date.

THE ST NICHOLAS BLOODWISE CONCERTS

T

he St Nicholas Bloodwise Concert series has been created to raise funds for the blood cancer research charity Bloodwise and other, local causes. It starts with a flourish at 6.00pm on Saturday 22nd September by featuring the Hart Male Voice Choir and below is a list of all the concerts planned for this winter. The concerts will last for less than an hour, the church will be warm, the music wonderful and you are very welcome to stay for a drink afterwards. Unless informed otherwise, parking will be available at Bishop’s Sutton village hall, on the main road. Information on the musicians and their programmes is posted on the website stnicholasbloodwiseconcerts.com as soon as it becomes available. Tickets cost £10.00 each and include a post-concert glass of wine. Tickets available through: stnbconcerts@gmail.com or 07392 637848 Information can be found on stnicholasbloodwiseconcerts.com

If your harvest is fruit or veg, it is better to giver a lot of one type rather than a mix of a few however nice a mixed basket may look. Also useful are cleaning materials such as washing up liquid, cleaning cloths, floor cleaner or a roll of black bags!. Last year someone gave a very useful mop and bucket. The Church in the Wood ‘Harvest festival’ is on Sunday 22nd September at 3pm and we hope you are able to join in this service of thanksgiving and perhaps make a contribution, but don’t worry if you can’t. The church will be specially decorated for the occasion. Harvest can be left at the door on Saturday morning. Look forward to seeing you.

A ROSE BY ANY OTHER NAME WOULD SOUND AS SWEET

O

yez! Oyez! Oyez! Astounding news! The Itchen Valley Choral Society has been rebranded and is now called The Itchen Valley Choir. Oyez! Oyez! Oyez!

We’re the same group of singers, singing very similar music to that heard over the past few years but the members felt that the words “Choral Society” have a rather stuffy, Edwardian feel to them that is perhaps not so relevant to the 21st century. They were words hardly conducive to attracting new members in the era of selfies, Instagram and LOL. Our friendly group of singers is open to anyone and everyone who fancies singing, whether you are Covent Garden trained or are only ever heard singing in the shower. You don’t have to read music (many of our members don’t) though to be fair it does help. We sing a wide range of music, from popular classics (and sometimes unpopular ones) through to full blown traditional concerts in Winchester Cathedral and Romsey Abbey. The Itchen Valley Choir starts rehearsing again in September when we will tackle On This Shining Night by Lee Dengler (look it up on YouTube) together with other smaller pieces for our local village concert in December. Do come and join us for our first rehearsal at 7.45 pm on Wednesday 5 September in Itchen Abbas village hall. Any enquiries, please contact our chairman, Gary Carter, on 01962 732350 or email ivcshub@gmail.com. Vernon Tottle 16

22 September - St Nicholas Church, Church Lane, Bishop’s Sutton SO24 0AD From 6m – 7pm. ‘Summer’s End’ – an early evening concert by the Hart Male Voice Choir which will include a selection of rousing anthems, traditional songs and numbers from the musicals. This is the first in a series of concerts to raise money for the blood cancer charity Bloodwise and the church. 13 October - St Nicholas Church, Church Lane, Bishop’s Sutton SO24 0AD From 6m – 7pm. Kate Jones, organist, will give an early -evening recital which will include ‘Autumn’ from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. Kate is well known to many of us in Alresford as the exceptionally talented composer and accompanist for the Community Choir but the range of her performances and musical commitments stretches much further afield. This will be the second concert in a series that has been organised to raise money for the blood cancer charity Bloodwise and the church. November 10th – Byron Adlam, violin; Louisa Adlam, viola; Leon Küssner, cello; Rachel Carver, harp December 1st – Adrian Neville, classical guitar February 9th – The Thomas Weelkes Singers led by Christopher Tolley March 9th – Adrian Adlam, violin April 6th – Lester Simpson & Nigel Corbett - Will Ye Go To Flanders – songs and music with stringed instruments, accordion and bagpipes

Treatments for blood cancer are improving all the time and it would be wonderful to have your help in ensuring the research continues, and if you have read this far, thank you! Mandy Caldwell

nother huge THANK YOU to everyone who was involved with #AMF18. From all of you who bought tickets and came along, to those who helped spread the word across social media and through word of mouth. Thanks to the wonderful bands and artists of course, plus the journalists, film-makers and photographers and generous sponsors. To our friends and dedicated supporters, the traders and hired hands and the incredible (but tiny) AMF team who give so much of their time, energy, to make it all happen and to enable us to provide the best staging, sound and lighting to attract such high calibre artists. It’s a monumental community effort and we are very grateful for all who become involved and help. More people came to the festival this year than ever before. Over 4,500 people enjoyed a huge variety of music and entertainment performed across five stages. Our reputation for being family friendly, as well as providing a perfect platform for brilliant bands, is the reason why you come.

18

Plus the addition of a huge FREE family arena three years ago makes the festival special and hugely popular with families – but of course, there is a cost to provide this. Much is covered by tickets sales (and for that we are ever grateful), but it is our sponsors who enable us to make the festival happen in the first place and their early commitment helps us secure the festival’s financial status to plan ahead.Throughout the last nine years we have lost and gained sponsors, but despite the unfailing support of our founding key sponsors; First Option,Thomas Miller Creative, Mint Signs and CleverTouch (as well as numerous other smaller but vital sponsors), we will struggle to donate to charities this year.

Most importantly, the festival was originally founded with the aim of raising money for charity. This happens in a variety of ways: through ‘The AMF Foundation’ (our registered charity) we support a number of music-based charities, locally, nationally and internationally, plus by opening up the festival to other deserving causes including; Murray Parish Trust, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance, How Many Elephants, Alresford Pigs Association and Alresford Rotary Club we are able to provide a platform to raise awareness and funds too. Since we began the music festival in 2010 we have distributed over £40,000 to charities and community organisations.

The AMF team is small, we love what we do and it’s an honour to be able to host the festival in our town, but we need more people to help organise and deliver the festival if it’s to continue to be something we are all proud of and enjoy.Your time, energy and skills in many areas including financial, operational and organisational would be much appreciated. AMF has become an annual event for us all – but to continue to be able to put this on we really do need businesses to support us financially and individuals to help us deliver. 2019 is our 10th festival and since the start we’ve grown from a few hundred visitors and two stages to over 4,500 festival goers and five stages. We are an independent music festival and we have so many ideas to improve and develop but we need your help to do this. So if you want to support the festival and help out in any way to make our 10th anniversary even better, as well as raising much needed funds for important and deserving causes – please get in touch. We are in the heart of Alresford, have nice coffee and a big tin of biscuits!

BUT – here’s the thing… with a growing festival comes growing costs. So much is achieved by our team of volunteers and most of the bands play at vastly reduced rates (or for free) because they love what we do and they believe passionately in keeping live music alive, but some corners cannot be cut. Safety, security, stages, lights and red tape all carry a larger bill as we grow.

And finally – here’s a real treat to remind you of just what a fantastic festival we all create. Please enjoy our 2018 highlights film on our website: www.alresfordmusicfestival.com From The AMF Team and our charities’ THANK YOU and we look forward to hearing from you! COMEDY, NOSTALGIA AND DRAMA AT THE HOLIDAY INN WINCHESTER

F

ollowing on from the Holiday Inn Winchester’s recent success with their sell-out ‘Fawlty Towers Comedy Dining’ event, the 4 star hotel has created a programme of new events for their autumn season of entertainment. The season will launch with ‘Fabulous? Absolutely’ on Friday,12th October, an Absolutely Fabulous tribute that will bring all the drama and comedy of that much loved TV series into the hotel, while guests enjoy a three course meal, created by the hotel’s AA Rosette Award winning head chef and his team. The hotel’s Sarah Waddington reveals a little about the performance: “The drama will unfold around our guests, who will see the main characters attending a Gala, only to arrive and find out that they are not on the guest list. They then try various hilarious ways to get access to the event.” The evening starts at 7pm, when the gathering guests will start to see the scenes unfold as the cast mingle and perform around them. Then at 8pm a three course meal will be served, while the performance continues. Tickets are £36 per person. “We had a promenade theatre event at the hotel a few years ago and it was very successful and memorable, so it is great to bring a live theatrical performance back again and present it to the public in a nontheatre setting” continued Sarah Waddington.

“This event is perfect for pre-Christmas celebrations, office parties and groups of friends to come along to. Party games, pantos and presents will be part of the theme of the drama that will be revealed to our guests as they dine, along with the usual Del Boy Trotter chaos!” said Sarah Waddington. Tickets will be £36 including a three course meal, festive table decorations, coffee and mince pies with 7pm arrival and dinner at 8pm. Also leading up to Christmas the hotel has booked Abba’s Angels, an Abba tribute band for another evening of entertainment and fine food on Friday, 30th November from 7pm until midnight. There will be a dance floor for those who want to express their inner-Abba and the event includes a three course dinner, party novelties and the evening of entertainment. Tickets £42 per head (over 18’s only). To end the year the hotel will be ‘Partying through the Decades’ on New Year’s Eve with live music from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, with fancy dress of the decades optional. The event includes a pre-dinner glass of Prosecco, a three course meal, and the entertainment, with tickets at £75 per person and special packages for those wishing to stay overnight at £249 per couple including the event, overnight accommodation and breakfast, with extended check out until 1pm for those wanting a relaxing start to 2019. New GP Partner We are very pleased to announce that Dr Ben Saunders will be joining the practice in September as a GP Partner. Dr Saunders qualified as a doctor at Imperial College, London and prior to and during his GP training he spent a number of years working in hospitals gaining experience of different specialist departments. Dr Saunders will be working all day Monday, Thursday and Friday and on Tuesday mornings and says, ‘I am delighted to be joining the Alresford Surgery in September and look forward to getting to know the town and the local community’. Flu Vaccination Campaign 2018/9 It may not feel like it yet, but we are approaching that time of year again – it will soon be time for flu jabs. This year, there are changes to the vaccination programme. We will be offering different vaccines from those given last year, and there are different vaccines for patients who are 65 and over (date of birth before or on 31st March 1954) and those who are under 65 and have a condition which puts them at risk should they contract flu (including pregnant women). In addition, we do not have a choice about our delivery schedule so we have to work within these constraints. Please bear with us. There will be 2 walk-in clinics at

ome Instead Senior Care was founded in 1994 in the USA and was established in the UK in 2005. At that time, home care in the UK was lacking a personalised approach and, bridging that gap, Home Instead Senior Care quickly grew into the UK's leading quality home care company. The Central Hampshire branch was set up in 2011 by Jan and Steve Gapper from Winchester, who were joined last year by their son, Jon. They specialise in providing non-medical care for older people in their own homes, covering Winchester, Alresford, Eastleigh and Chandlers Ford. Finding care for elderly loved ones to allow them to stay in their own homes for as long as possible can be daunting. Home Instead Senior Care Central Hampshire can help. Whether it is personal care, companionship or home help, their care services are personalised and tailored to meet each individual’s unique needs. They set out to provide care of an exceptional quality. Their CAREGivers are matched to the client, and spend a minimum of one hour with them on every visit, so they get to know each other well and develop a relationship based on trust and understanding of the clients’ needs. Jan Gapper, Director of Care, says ‘We aim to deliver the level of care which I would be happy for a member of my own family to receive. We do this by training and investing in our dedicated team of CAREGivers on a continual basis to ensure we deliver the highest standard and quality of care so that our service is the best it can be.’ If you are intested in learning more about home care services, or would like to apply to be a CAREGiver, please feel free to pop in to their offices, call 01962 736681 or email hants@homeinstead.co.uk

the surgery this year on Wednesday 3rd and Wednesday 10th October from 1.00-2.30. These will be for patients who are 65 and over only. There is no need to worry about getting here early, as we will continue to vaccinate all through the clinic and patients who find it difficult to stand may wish to come at 2.00pm when there is less likelihood of having to queue. We will be organising bookable clinics in October, November and December for the patients who are under 65 and at risk, and those older patients unable to attend the walk-in clinics which may include late afternoons and Saturday mornings for patients who are at work. Clinics at Preston Candover, Makins Court and Ellingham Close will also run as usual and we will let you know those dates soon. Child flu clinics will run very similarly to previous years with 2-3 year olds and 2-17 year old at risk patients being vaccinated at the surgery while children in year R to 5 will be vaccinated in school by the School Nursing Team. Patients who are eligible for vaccination at the surgery will receive a letter from us. We are unable to vaccinate children who have missed their vaccination at school unless they are at risk, but School Health will run catch-up clinics and you can contact them should the need arise. As you can see, there is a lot for us to contend with this year and your co-operation in helping us to get as many eligible people vaccinated as possible will be much appreciated. Pharmacy 2 you We have been made aware that there has been a recent mail drop done by Pharmacy 2 you. The Surgery has nothing to do with this company or the service that it is offering. The Surgery does not use EPS or have plans to use it as we prefer to support the local Alresford Pharmacies. If patients want to remain with the current dispensary then they do not need to do anything with the letter, other than ignore it. Telephone: 01962 732345 Website: www.alresfordsurgery.co.uk

COULD YOU BE THE SECOND VILLAGE AGENT FOR ALRESFORD? But what does a Village Agent do?

Anne Harrison,Village Agents Coordinator for Age Concern Hampshire, tells you more… There are around 55 Village Agent volunteers across Hampshire, co-ordinated by Age Concern Hampshire. Village Agents are local people who are already likely to be actively involved in their communities, and able to offer a few hours a week of their time to signpost and help older people to access information, advice, and local services, with the aim of helping them to stay well and independent in their own homes. Denise, your local Village Agent volunteer for Alresford, has been spending the last three and a half years in Alresford doing just that, with the assistance of her previous colleague Fiona. In fact, you will probably have already read her regular articles in this very magazine! To give you an idea of her role, in the last three months she has assisted with enquiries on:

Getting out and about - Denise advised a lady on how to apply for a Blue Badge online, which the lady was able to do for herself. Denise has links with lots of local organisations, so she can also offer suggestions on where to get transport for shopping, who organises trips, where to get help getting to the hospital appointment, and on local activities and events. Around the home - A lady needed help in her garden, so Denise

helped point towards a couple of reputable local trade’s people. Denise, and her colleague Fiona dealt with queries for Admin help for an elderly lady, sourcing a person from the Alresford What’s On magazine; asked about a handyman to put up curtain rails for a resident, they found someone to help.

Staying well - Denise has strong links with the Alresford Surgery, and is contacted by them with requests to visit residents who are lonely or in need of some kind of non-medical support. She’s had an enquiry about personal alarms, directing the enquirer to a known and tested supplier, and has been in regular contact with the family of residents where one partner has Alzheimer’s and the caring partner would like him to go the Alresford Day Centre.

Money matters - May saw Denise working with a client to assist

him with completing Attendance Allowance application forms, which she has trained to do. (Denise is not an advisor, but she has direct contact with the staff and volunteers in Age Concern Hampshire’s Information and Advice Unit, who are trained advisors.)

So - Could you be the second village agent for Alresford?

If you like the sound of what you read above, why not contact Denise by email on denisem.buxton@gmail.com or, alternatively, ring Anne Harrison,Village Agent Service Coordinator, on 01962 892443, email anne.harrison@ageconcernhampshire.org.uk

REPORT FROM WINCHESTER – COUNCILLOR, MARGOT POWER

W

ild Flowers on Public Land. Many residents have planted native flowers to decorate our roadsides, and some have been upset by their being mowed before setting seed. Where these have been planted on highways land – that is mostly verges, a licence is necessary from Hampshire County Council. If the land is inside a 40 MPH limit the cutting is contracted to Winchester City Council and you need to inform them of the licence, as Hampshire rarely do. Then mowers will avoid cutting until seed has been set. If the land is owned by Winchester City Council permission is also required. I have maps of what Winchester will cut and when, and how to apply for wild flower areas, email me on mpower@winchester.gov.uk if you would like a copy for your parish. Less Welcome Wild Flowers. I have received many complaints about weeds, not only unsightly in town centres but also damaging to paved surfaces and make street sweeping more difficult. In order to save money Hampshire decided to only spray weeds once a year, this year of course, due to the exceptional weather, most weeds have set seed and died, so the spraying will have limited benefits. Some of us have decided to attack the weeds ourselves and immediately improved our surroundings. As Local Authority funding is reduced year on year cuts have had to be made, I think we will all need to do more to make our close environment a better place for all. New Leisure Centre at Bar End. You will have seen multiple contradictory reports on whether this will work or not. The advice from Sport England is that the design is inadequate for some sports, and would adversely affect current users of the land. We do need a new Leisure Centre, to pour money into River Park would be a false economy and the cost of roof repairs was estimated at £4.25 m. But if the new Centre is to work for the ratepayers it must also work for the sporting fraternity. The build cost of £38 m. signifies an annual cost of £1 m. plus which is a significant amount of the annual Winchester General budget of £14.7 m. So far potential operators have not committed to cover that cost. Last Month I briefly reported on a survey to see what you thought of the proposals from HCC to charge for free on street parking. The answer was less than complimentary, the only benefits you could see were that at we would get more enforcement, to make sure there was churn for shoppers, and some town centre dwellers may be able to get residents parking. The objections ranged from the destruction of everyday shops in our market town, to excessive street furniture in a conservation area. I am assured that should these proposals come forward to residents in the form of Traffic Road Orders you are well equipped to provide informed and articulate comments. These proposals are not yet submitted to Winchester Council for a formal response. Councillor Surgery. I am in the Alresford Community Centre again on 31st August, 0930 – 1030, then next on 5th October. Problems, questions or just a chat are always welcome. This is made possible by the kind permission of the Alresford & District Community Association, Registered Charity 301723, who not only provide a social event for some residents that don’t get out much but also keep this historic building open and in good repair.

Hampshire Mum: You Can’t Keep a Good Dog Down

H

BY SANDRA PAGAN

ow I remember the journey back from St. Ives last year! Ten hours of stop, start, stop driving. When, in the dreary January weeks, I suggested we book the same cottage for the summer, The Husband was having none of it. “No way! Never again am I doing that journey!” came his emphatic reply. I have to confess I sulked, summer without St. Ives was inconceivable. So I stuck a pin in the map and North Devon it would have to be. What a brilliant summer it had been though. Endless sunshine, hot days and cooler nights when we could sit out in the garden until late; fabulous friends, family, festivals, operas, painting, unexpected treats, balls and barbies. Overshadowing all of this was the news that the Pagan Pup was ill, with the vets giving him only eight weeks to live. Now I appreciate that you are not all dog lovers, but if you are then you will know why we Pagans were devastated. We opted not to treat with chemotherapy, which we were told would be ultimately ineffective, and went with steroids and a conviction that the Pagan Pup should live out his days doing what he does best until such times as he couldn’t. There was a point when we thought he wouldn’t be able to experience the delights of the ‘dog-friendly’ cottage, but having survived his allotted eight weeks, by week thirteen the Pagan Pup was bright as a button on the back seat of the Trusty Renault with an earnest ‘are we there yet?’ expression. Canine family members will generally adapt to most environments just as long as they can be with you. The beaches of North Devon, I have to say, are amongst the most beautiful I have seen. Literally miles and miles

34 34

of sand embraced by dunes and aqua seas supporting cascading white horses dotted with surfers. But for us, the greatest delight by far this year was that Devon welcomed dogs to its beaches and the Pagan Pup embraced the whole salty seadog vibe. He lounged around in the shade of the beach tent, walked for miles along the sands, dug enormous holes and went for cooling dips. Some folk took their dogs out on surf boards but that was a step too far, besides Star I was on a mission to teach Tiny Dancer, (his lovely GF), to surf. She reluctantly slipped into her wetsuit and looked stunning (I was relieved I’d left mine in the car). I could just hear the comments. ‘‘Blimey, what’s this little and large? The fat one’s yours mate’’. No, I was better off on the beach with Pagan Pup. So accompanied by Star II they trotted off to the sea. The Husband awoke from his slumber and, not to be out done, yawned and said,” I’d best get in there myself “. Now our beach tent is reasonably roomy, but it struggled to contain The Husband’s clothing removal contortions under the towel. “Ooops, sorry you weren’t meant to see that”. No indeed… “I’m sure this wetsuit shrank when you washed it, Sandra. It’s a bit snug. Zip me up, will you?” Still looking a fine figure of a man, he minced his way to the pounding seas and then, some three hours later, came staggering back across the sand. Proof, if it were needed, that not only can you not keep a good dog down, but you can’t keep an old one down either! Sandra Pagan

Who loved you, Major Cox?

S

t Mary’s Church soars above the village of Itchen Stoke – it’s a miniature French Cathedral set in the Hampshire Countryside. As you approach it from Alresford, the church’s open belfry, diamondpatterned tile roof and gabled apse (inspired by Sainte Chappelle in Paris) will tower over you on the right hand side of the road. Park the car and walk up the steep path to the west entrance and you’ll see the tracery of a rose window encouraging you inside. Click the latch and push open the heavy wooden door and on a sunny day, you’ll be dazzled by a kaleidoscope of red and blue stained glass windows, intricately tiled walls and a richly painted ceiling. All very ‘continental’ – but St Mary’s Church is also home to a particularly British mystery. Like most churches, St Mary’s contains memorials to parishioners who fell in the First World War. Unusually, the church has an exquisite glass mosaic with the following inscription: IN PROUD AND LOVING MEMORY OF REGINALD JOHN PONSONBY COX MAJOR AND ARGYLL AND SUTHERLAND HIGHLANDERS … WAS WITH THE NEW ARMY IN ALRESFORD 1914 – 1915 HE GAVE HIS LIFE FOR HIS COUNTRY AT THE BATTLE OF LOOS SEPTEMBER 27TH 1915 THIS TABLET IS PLACED HERE BY ONE WHO LOVED HIM

Why would a heroic Scottish Army officer have a memorial in a church so far from home? And who was the ‘one who loved him’ - the person who commissioned such an expensive and beautifully crafted memorial, yet wished to remain anonymous? These questions probably would have remained unasked and unanswered if the church had not been vandalised in 2014.The vandals prised out glass medallions depicting military crests and St George and St Andrew’s faces from Major Cox’s memorial. The Churches Conservation Trust (CCT), which opens and maintains the church, has obtained a Heritage Lottery Fund grant to repair Major Cox’s memorial. Meriel O'Dowd, CCT Conservation Manager, explained that the CCT is determined that something good, some

36

craftsmanship and learning, should come out of this vandalism to something that is so beautiful in the community. The CCT has commissioned the glazing team from Salisbury Cathedral Stained Glass to craft the repairs to the memorial. At a stained glass workshop in St Mary’s they explained that the missing saints’ faces and military crests would have been painted in watercolour, then fused at a high temperature onto the glass. However, the best photograph we have of the memorial before it was vandalised is not clear enough for them to copy the paintings on the replacement glass. Does anyone reading this feature have a better photo which could help in the restoration, please? The CCT has also invited local historians to deduce what the crests should be from the historical record and to research who might have commissioned Major Cox’s memorial. We have discovered that the damaged crests were copied from the silver collar badges of Major Cox’s Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders’ dress uniform. He came from a wealthy Scottish family and when his regiment came to Alresford to train in November 1914, he would have been billeted with a local family who could accommodate him in ‘the style to which he was accustomed’, perhaps at Itchen Stoke Manor, or The Rectory. In contrast, Major Cox’s men would have been under canvas in Alresford and you can just imagine him being chauffeured into town to command them after a comfortable night in a country house or vicarage! During this time, he met someone who cared for him enough to commission and erect a memorial in their parish church after his tragic death. The War Memorial Committee papers in the Hampshire Record Office show that the memorial was erected in 1920 and so we’re looking for someone with means and influence who lived in Itchen Stoke between 1914 and 1920. If anyone has further information which would update or expand these deductions, please contact me at Iris.crowfoot@gmail.com Major Cox’s memorial will be reinstated and a celebration held in St Mary’s Church on the anniversary of his death, 27th September. For further information on this event, please contact Ed McGregor emcgregor@thecct.org.uk Iris Crowfoot

Join Sally Taylor for a Walk in the Park for Breast Cancer Haven

I

f you love walking and exploring the beautiful Hampshire countryside, you will be thrilled to learn about a rare opportunity to walk for five miles through stunning parkland not normally accessible to the public. The ‘Walk in the Park’ will take place at The Grange in Northington near Alresford on Sunday 16 September 2018 and is being organised by BBC South Today’s Sally Taylor to raise vital funds for Breast Cancer Haven, Wessex. Sally Taylor says, “I love being outdoors, walking and cycling and am always looking for new places to discover so I was absolutely delighted when our friends at The Grange very kindly agreed to let us organise a sponsored walk through their unspoilt private parkland. It will be such a treat and all proceeds will go to Breast Cancer Haven – a local charity very close to my heart.” “We’re raising money for the Titchfield-based centre, which provides specialist and individual treatment and support for anyone affected by Breast Cancer. There are currently over 3000 people in Wessex being treated for Breast Cancer and as a survivor myself, I know only too well what a gruelling roller coaster of a ride breast cancer sufferers have to endure. Breast Cancer Haven is just that – a haven – a non-medical environment run by professionally trained breast cancer nurses and specialist therapists who will tailor a series of treatments to complement someone’s conventional treatment programme. It costs £1000 to treat each visitor and so we’re always looking for great ways to raise money to help as many people as possible. Potentially, we hope that The Walk in the Park for Breast Cancer Haven could become an annual event held in other exclusive estates and parklands throughout Wessex.”

This event is held by kind permission of Lord and Lady Ashburton, Mark and Sophie Baring. Unfortunately for safety reasons and to protect the wildlife, dogs will not to be permitted in the park. Places are limited and so registration is essential. Dragons and Damsels BY CLAIRE THURLOW

S

ummer wouldn’t be summer without the familiar rattle of the dragonfly, its delicate wings strumming a beat over the flower beds. During the heat-wave, it’s a relief to sit and enjoy the garden for a change, rather than just labour in it, and the persistent, yet gentle, buzz of the dragon-fly harmonises perfectly with the drowsy hum of the bees. A siesta in a hammock under the trees seems an appealing (if unlikely) option. We don’t have a pond in our garden, but the dragonfly is a stalwart flier and can travel some distance from a water source. It has four wings; the pair at the back being shorter than the pair at the front, and each wing is controlled by a separate muscle, so they can be rotated separately. This miraculous engineering allows the insect to change direction at speed, which must be a great bonus as both predator and prey. Dragonflies eat in mid-air, snacking on midges, flies and mosquitoes, as well as moths and smaller dragonflies. In turn, they can be picked off by birds or bees, but sadly are more at risk from climate change and destruction of habitat. Its flight really is unpredictable. I watch one land on a clump of verbena, where it lingers on a flower head, balancing elegantly as the stem sways in the breeze. This looks like an Emperor, with a long green body and green stripe on the tail. Suddenly it takes off vertically, then banks around to a fennel plant which has ‘bolted’ and is now a five-foot monster. The dragonfly hovers over the giant herb, surveying the umbels for an inflight meal, but turns sharply again, before whizzing off towards the meadow and pastures new. In China and Japan the dragonfly is considered a sign of prosperity and good fortune, so I’m more than happy to welcome one into the garden. Up at the village pond, a stunning display of waterlilies stretches across the water, with saucer-shaped leaves

42

and yellow flowers. Apparently, this stuff is nicknamed ‘brandy bottle’ because of the smell, but I’m not picking up any trace of it today. This woodland pond is a perfect spot for other members of the dragonfly family – chasers, darters and hawkers – as well as damsel flies, or demoiselles as they are known. It can be hard to tell them apart, but damsels not such adept fliers and tend to stay close to water. When one lands on a nearby branch, I lean in for a closer look. Both damsels and dragonflies have four wings, but the damsel rests with its wings neatly folded, while the dragonfly likes to stretch out. The eyes are different too. The damsel has separate eyes, whereas those of the dragonfly touch at a point, but both species have excellent, all-round vision. There is definitely something prehistoric in their appearance, and the ancestors of our Hampshire dragonflies were buzzing around at the time of the dinosaurs. Some of them were the size of an eagle, which must have been interesting with such a fast and furious flying style! A water boatmen skims by, hairy legs paddling away the pond. It’s swimming upside down and appears to be watching me with sinister red eyes. So, it can ‘walk’ on water, and (although probably not at the same time) ‘sing’ by rubbing its front legs against a ridge of its head.Very clever. And I’m happy to admit that bugs such as water boatmen are vital to the healthy life of a ponds and rivers, and the creatures which live in and around them. But can it compare to the dazzling dragonflies? I don’t think so. That flash of colour, combined with the inimitable rattle, and matchless flying make them unique summer visitors. Enjoy them while you can.

Alresford Town Council Reports NATC Report Before turning to general Council matters, we feel a special thank you should be made to all the residents and shop keepers who managed to keep the Town’s famous flower baskets alive and flowering during the exceptional searing heat in August! Well done everyone, a magnificent effort. You will recall that the July issue of the Forum carried an NATC staff advertisement for a Town Clerk/RFO and Deputy Town Clerk. We are pleased to be able to report that there was a good response to this advertisement, interviews are being held with the shortlisted candidates. ARC News With the Rugby and Football season approaching work is currently under way to prepare the pitches for play following this very hot summer. We can also report that there are on-going discussions to widen the refreshment facilities available at the ARC. As you may well be aware, for the past 18 months an independent company have been providing a bar and refreshments for the sporting clubs on match days. It is hoped, if discussions are successful with an additional party, that this arrangement will be complimented by the provision of hot drinks and snacks on match days and at various times during the week to meet the needs of the local community. On-Street Car Parking Agreement Renewal The on-street car parking in Alresford is current managed by Winchester City Council on behalf of Hampshire County Council. However, the contract that WCC has with HCC to manage the car parking

44

programme of cutting will be amended. In the meanwhile residents can report verges that need attention by calling the Winchester City Council Customer Service Centre on 0300 3000 013 or on-line at www.winchester.gov.uk using the Report It function.

is currently under review. As part of this review, and as a cost saving measure, HCC are considering whether or not they should manage their own parking and not out-source the work to WCC. Hampshire County Council have confirmed that, should they decide to manage their own parking, installing meters and charging for on-street parking is NOT part of the plan. Winchester City Council’s Local Plan 2036 The city council is inviting local people to have their say on the way that the District develops. Consultation on what should be included in Winchester City Council’s Local Plan 2036 is now underway and will run until midday Friday 21 September 2018. The Local Plan is an important document which will help shape the future of the Winchester District. It enables Winchester City Council to plan for and deliver the housing, employment space, facilities and infrastructure needed to ensure that the District grows and prospers whilst protecting the built and natural environments which makes Winchester’s towns, villages and countryside so attractive. To produce a new plan which accommodates necessary development without

compromising the quality of the environment, the city council invites feedback from all who have an interest in the District’s future. Parish councils, local communities, businesses and other stakeholders are being approached for comment during a process that leads to the adoption of a new plan which will guide development for many years to come. As part of this consultation programme, Winchester City Council is currently seeking views on the scope and content of the Local Plan from residents, businesses and anyone with an interest in planning matters across the District. An online consultation is available at: https://winchester.citizenspace. com/policy-and-planning/ winchester-lp-launch/ with key questions to help shape the plan. Overgrown Verges NATC are aware that there are a number of grass verges around the town that are either very overgrown or burnt to a crisp. This matter has been raised with Winchester City Council who are responsible for the maintenance of grass verges. The problem stems from too few early season cuts and continuing to cut when the weather has been particularly dry. We understand that the

Alresford – Policing Priorities The Neighbourhood Policing Team for the Winchester Rural Area are actively monitoring the trends of criminal activity and behaviours in each specific area. The information gathered from examining the various trends is then used to inform future policing priorities and make best use of available resources. In addition to the policing priorities derived from the monitoring of criminal trends, the Neighbourhood Policing Team also wish to be advised of community based priorities resulting from local issues. It is important that, as a community, we make our local team aware of the issues that we believe should be prioritised. Please can we ask you to the follow the link below and complete the short survey. By completing this survey you will be helping us to narrow down precisely which issues are affecting which areas and set the Policing priorities for the next six months. Community FUNDRAISING SUCCESS TO BUILD NEW VILLAGE STORE

P

hew! What a summer! It makes a change for the school holidays to be mainly dry, and now many children are returning or going to school for the first time. To save money, Hampshire County Council has decided not to support free school transport for ‘new’ children until they are of statutory school age (ie: for children travelling more than two miles to school in the term after they are 5) from September 2019. Although this seems a long way off, this may be an important consideration for parents choosing a school for September 2019, for example, if you work near a school other than your local one. The new policies on transport cover all ages- you can see it on www.hants.gov.uk search ‘transport to school’. Walking to school is one option, but for children walking alongside a main road, even with parents, fast cars, big vehicles and nettles can be scary. I want to walk to school with a child at least once in every month of this academic year to get a sense of the child’s experience. I would be pleased to share your school journey on request.

A

trailblazing group of villagers in the Candover Valley have raised almost £115,000 via donations and a share scheme representing over half the sum needed to build a community store and post office in Preston Candover. The group is determined that the convenience and community hub provided by a village shop should be maintained in their rural location and their enthusiasm has persuaded over 200 neighbours, friends and family members to get involved by snapping up the £20 shares and becoming shareholder members. Richard Walker who lives near Preston Candover, chairs the Candover Valley Community Store committee which is made up of eight local volunteers. He told Forum, “We truly believe that a new shop and post office will be of huge practical and social benefit to the Candover Valley and we are delighted so many residents have shown their support. The appeal has gone really well but it is still possible for people to buy shares or make a donation. And now, as the project progresses, we are particularly looking for people to volunteer their time and expertise.” The next big step is to apply for a number of grants that are available to help the fundraisers meet their £200,000 target. Although the process has started it is likely to be some time before the team hear whether their grant applications have been successful. Community stores are proven to succeed where other businesses struggle. As well as being extremely useful to local residents and reducing car journeys to local towns, they are places where people can meet and interact, reducing rural isolation. The existing shop is set to close and the new one, which will be larger and better sited in the centre of the village, will provide a vital service for people in the Candover Valley and the surrounding countryside. If you would like to buy shares, get involved, or find out more, please visit our website www.candovervalleycommunitystore.org.uk or call Richard Walker on 01256 389238 Look forward to seeing you.

JACKIE’S COUNTY CORNER FOR SEPTEMBER 2018

It was heartening to hear from Paula Stopinski (see picture) from the Hospice Campaign that donations for the Winchester Hospice offering in-house and Hospice at Home care, are gaining pace. Paula rightly describes this project as ‘Leaving a legacy for local people for generations to come.’ The team has a £2million target! Would you like to raise funds or support the team? Go to winchester.hospice@hhft.nhs.uk for more details. Electric Car charging is a hot topic right now. The County is looking at the best way to provide electric points, initially for their own fleet cars, then spreading out to everyone. Modern technology could give new meaning to ‘on street charging’. More of this in future articles. You will have seen the publicity regarding the difficult state of Finances at County Councils across the country. One of the Council’s Statutory duties is to dispose of waste, including the provision of at least one recycling centre within the county boundary. When Winchester City Council organises kerbside collection of your household rubbish and recycling, they pass it to Hampshire County Council to dispose of it. Most of the black bin waste (including yogurt pots etc) go to the Chineham incinerator to be burnt at high temperatures, the resulting energy generated is used to supply power to local households. The clinker from that process is used in road building. The contents of your green bin: card, paper, tins, plastic bottles with a neck etc) are sent to plants across the UK that recycle it. The cost of recycling (and the profit or loss from the markets for the resultant product) is part of what your council tax is spent on. The question is: should we recycle ALL plastic- or burn the smaller pieces (like yoghurt pots)? Let me know so that I can reflect your views at HCC. The Council seems to have been ‘behind the curve’ on Grass cutting all this summer, and it is frustrating to see the junction sightlines hidden by higher grass, old signage and ragwort. Please go to www. hants.gov.uk to report the problem- all instructions to the contractors are started online now-so this is the most effective way to get it on the system. Please keep a record of your case number and let me know if nothing happens in a fortnight please! Community REPORT FROM WINCHESTER – COUNCILLOR, LISA GRIFFITHS

S

ummer holidays are almost over, but there is a lot going on at Winchester City Council.

Universal Credit (UC)

A new simpler single monthly payment for people of working age in or out of work. It supports working age people with basic living expenses and housing costs and replaces a number of benefits. There are a small number of people who will not have their housing costs paid as part of their Universal Credit and will continue to receive help towards their rent by claiming Housing Benefit from WCC. If you have any queries or concerns related to your own situation, please contact me for assistance.

Winchester City Council’s Local Plan 2036

The Local Plan – everyone’s favourite topic! WCC are asking residents for their thoughts for the Local Plan 2036. The consultation runs until midday Friday 21 September 2018. The Council has to plan for and deliver the housing, employment space, facilities and infrastructure needed to ensure that the District grows and prospers whilst protecting the built and natural environments. Online consultation https:// winchester.citizenspace.com/policy-and-planning/winchester-lplaunch/ to help shape the plan. Further information and supporting evidence for the Local Plan can be viewed at http://www.winchester. gov.uk/planning-policy

Winchester Sport & Leisure Park, Bar End

The current River Park sports hall is the equivalent to 6 courts. Sport England guidelines changed some years ago so in the new sports hall, the majority of sports will be able to play twice the number of matches concurrently, plus we have the capacity to host international matches for some sports – none of that is currently possible. In addition, all the exercise studios are twice the size of the existing ones and will not need to be in the sports hall. I’m sure there will be many more arguments put forward by some who think it’s still not great! The District needs the new sports and leisure facility such as has been designed. Major Projects WCC is involved with a large number of significant projects across the District and you can keep up to date by reading the information on this link : http://www.winchester.gov.uk/major-projects If you have any questions that cannot be answered on the link, please contact me.

Winchester’s hack event

Saturday 8 September 9am to 6pm, free to attend, at The University of Winchester’s West Downs Centre, for people with all sorts of skills and experience to get together to solve shared problems. It’s all around

50

the theme of ‘How can Winchester be a premier business destination?’ using technology and data to help explore: supporting local businesses, attracting and retaining young people and creating co-working spaces. Places will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis - to book your space visit www.hackwinchester.eventbrite.co.uk. Car Parking Conundrum in Alresford

WCC operates the on street parking for HCC through an agreement (like other Districts in the County) and that agreement is up for renewal and HCC are considering whether running it themselves is more cost effective. The idea to start charging for on street parking in Alresford and install meters is not part of the plan. HCC will be looking to continue the existing operation, and as happens from time to time, on street parking permits are required in some areas to control the number of vehicles. In Alresford, to date, it has not been proven pressure is sufficient to bring in paid permits. As for ‘charging points’ mentioned, these relate to HCC installing electric vehicle charging points which will need to be paid for and potentially seek to restrict the time in these points to ensure there is a turnover for those who need them . Cllr Porter agrees that this is the case!

Community ALRESFORD NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH AGM Notice The AGM of Alresford & District Neighbourhood Watch Association will be held at Alresford Golf Club at 7:30pm on Tuesday 11th September. Speakers will be PCSO Rhys Griffiths and Julie Gallagher from Trading Standards. All are welcome. Phishing There are frequent warnings in the media and from Hampshire Alert about suspicious emails which are intended to solicit personal details about you and how you access organisations that you do business with. These are generically called phishing emails … a play on the word fishing, but these emails have a malicious intent. But, how are you supposed to tell the difference between a genuine email from an organisation and one which is not. As with many things … if it doesn’t look right or feel right, then it’s probably not genuine and should be deleted. However, there are some key things to look out for.

• Look for grammatical errors in the text … comma instead of a full stop … capitalisation in the middle of a sentence … repeated word. • If there are links in the email which you are directed to follow, do not click on the link but just let your mouse hover it so that the actual address is displayed. In a phishing email the address will not be anything you would expect. • If the email is in any way suspicious do not, under any circumstances, open or save any attachments. If ever you receive an email from an organisation which is not expected, and which is demanding some action from you, just take a minute or two to examine it a bit more closely, using some of the tips above and you may well save yourself from problems later. If you suspect you have received a phishing email, just delete it or forward it to the organisation which it is supposed to have come from and then delete it. Most companies have email addresses for receiving phishing emails, for example, phishing@ bt.com … phishing@rbs.com. If anyone has suggestions for topics that they think would be suitable for future Neighbourhood Watch articles in the Forum, please get in touch - e-mail contact.adnwa@gmail.com

• Phishing emails don’t address you by your name, instead, they use a general address like- Dear Customer or Dear Subscriber or Hello. • Check the email address of the sender. If this is a genuine email, the address will be directly related to the organisation.

• Check the email for spelling and grammatical errors. • Phishing emails use scare tactics, like threats to close accounts, to create a sense of urgency and cause you to make hasty or impulsive decisions that can prove disastrous.

Fingers crossed our handbook will be published by now so please keep an eye out around the town for these. They will help you to keep up to date with fixtures, events etc. In November we hope to have news on our website. Ain't Nothing But a Hound Dog!

I

BY WENDY MARTIN GREEN

n the spring of 1956 Elvis Presley’s voice pierced the airways with his first hit Heartbreak Hotel quickly followed by his song Hound Dog, the same year that Peter Green opened his first little bed store on Leigh Road in Eastleigh. What many people don't know though is that ‘Hound Dog’ was actually written in 1952 and had already been recorded 250 times by various singers but it was Elvis’ smooth voice that brought it to the charts making the song a memorable part of our history. On a very much smaller scale the same could also be said of my father, Peter Green who on a local basis changed the landscape of Eastleigh when he turned his little bed shop into a massive furniture super store on Southampton Road bringing people who had never even heard of this little town flocking from miles around. At that time Peter Green was a cash and carry business and Saturdays saw a stream of customers, strapping rolls of carpet and furniture onto the rooftops of their cars, and driving their bargains away with them. The original showrooms sold all manner of tables, chairs, sofas, and beds laid out in rows, ready for ‘immediate delivery.’ Housed in an old brush factory Peter Green was a well known landmark and the largest furniture store of its kind in the South of England, and people still come up to me and talk about it. Thirty years later the business relocated to School Lane in Chandlers Ford and the old buildings were demolished to make way for the new Swan Centre. Unfortunately my father died in 1980 and never saw this move, but my mother Norah Green continued to see it through, and remained chairman until she died in 2010, after which I was happy to take over. Nowadays most items are placed on order, because of the vast array of choices in styles and fabrics we can now offer our customers, which requires many pieces to be custom manufactured. We do, however, have our very own Peter Green Hampshire Collection, many items of which are still available for immediate delivery. We still stock many of the trusted British brands such as Ercol, G Plan and Parker Knoll that could be seen in Peter Green’s first store 62 years ago but now we have added many modern lines to our collection. We have one of the largest selections of beds in the county and a huge selection of flooring too. We are proud that our family business still can play a big part in the community, and we enjoy staging fun events for our customers such as the Peter Green Spring Clean, with a fifties twist, or the Midsummer’s Night Sale which featured Shakespearean vignettes performed by the Chameleon Theatre group. We also hold networking evenings in our coffee shop for neighbouring businesses, and gallery evenings at which local artists can show their work. At Christmas we have entertainment for all the family and a Christmas Fair. We are still very much a part of the community as the old Peter Green was and we still hold dear to out hearts the principles that he taught us… value, price and service are the key and the customer come first. In honour of our sixty-second anniversary we have 62% off selected lines from the 2nd September until the 30th September 2018 and

58

we are inviting our friends and neighbours to our ‘Elvis’ Party on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th September, between 11am and 3pm. There will be complimentary snacks, cake, bubbly and ‘Elvis’ will be in the building singing some of his classics at 12pm and 2pm on Sunday. Please join us because we want you to know that you are ‘Always on Our Mind!!!!’

WINCHESTER CITIZENS ADVICE

Lesley Rose, Advice Services Manager for Citizens Advice Winchester District, advises what to do if your hotel accommodation isn’t

I

quite what you booked.

booked a luxury hotel room for my package holiday, but arrived to find it wasn’t available. I spent the week in a standard room instead. I’ve reported this to my travel agent. Am I entitled to any compensation? Your holiday was lower in value than what you booked. This means you should be able to get compensation for your inconvenience and any extra costs incurred. Contact the customer services department of the company you booked your holiday with by email, letter or via the company website. Make sure to keep a copy of what you send. Explain fully what went wrong and how much compensation you want. This should be the difference in cost between the luxury room and the standard room, any costs incurred from staying in the standard room, and what you feel is reasonable compensation for your inconvenience. Make sure you keep receipts for any extra expenses. If the company refuses to pay compensation, or you don’t think its offer is good enough, check whether the company is a member of the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA). ABTA should be able to mediate between you and the company. If the company is not a member of ABTA, look for an Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR). This is an independent third party who can help you reach a resolution without going to court. Alternatively, if you paid by credit or debit card, contact the Financial Ombudsman who can mediate. If you need any more information, or are unsure of your next steps, contact the Citizens Advice consumer service on 03454 04 05 06.

If you want to speak to an adviser locally, Citizens Advice Winchester District has services in Winchester and Bishops Waltham, plus outreaches in Denmead, Wickham and Alresford. Alternatively, call AdviceLine on 03444 111306 or visit www.citizensadvice.org.uk If you need advice on any issue then visit your local Citizens Advice service. STEVE BRINE M.P

S

ustainable local communities are important to Winchester and its surrounding villages. And right at the top of that list sits a good mix of shops and, above all, independents, working alongside the national chains.

Recent months have seen a real push, in Winchester especially, to support these traders and the Winchester Independents High Street Market – held on a scorching Sunday in July - saw around 30 businesses make use of a free high street stall for the day. It was great to see the daily market stalls – almost all of them imports to Winchester – replaced with local businesses and, because they are just that and know so many of their customers, there was a fabulous atmosphere in town. The kids and I spent a number of hours chatting with traders and, from what I could gauge, there would be a huge appetite to do this more regularly. It's not the whole answer to our retail challenges, and no one is pretending it is, but we could support them a great deal more and I intend to get in the middle of discussions with Winchester BiD and the City Council about how we do that. And we must not forget our market towns, such as Alresford, in all of this and small independent traders in the villages who provide so much more than a newspaper or a loaf of bread. They’re about sustainable, healthy, communities and they should be the future as much as the past. Secondly this time is my Summer Tour which once again takes place during Parliament’s recess across August and September. This year it’s bigger than ever and sees me visit communities right across the area including street surgeries, knocking on doors and even (for the first time) a supermarket surgery at Tesco in Winnall. It’s just a chance to chat directly – not just those who email me once a week – with constituents about local and national issues so I return to Westminster in September as closely connected as ever to the people I represent. You can see much more on this via www.stevebrine.com/summertour and should look out for me in Alresford this month! Finally, I have welcomed news that specialist clinicians will soon be able to legally prescribe cannabis-derived medicinal products. Through my role in Government as Public Health Minister I have been closely involved in this and we think it is ‘absolutely right’ the Home Secretary has decided to reschedule these products after receiving advice from experts during the two-part review he commissioned in June. It means that senior clinicians will be able to prescribe the medicines to patients with an exceptional clinical need by the Autumn. You can find more of my work, in Winchester and in Parliament, at www.stevebrine.com Steve Brine
