JANUARY SALE 40% OFF We moved into our house in Broughton and although the kitchen was serviceable its layout did not work for us. We looked at the usual suspects and found Happy Kitchens advertising in a local magazine. We invited several kitchen companies and Happy Kitchens in to provide designs and quotations for a new kitchen so that we had a range of options to select from. The resulting designs were similar and the quotations were all in the same ball park. However, Ben was by far the most helpful as a potential supplier and this was important for us. He was more interested in ensuring we were happy with what he was proposing, he also advised us about disposing of our existing kitchen and where we could get the best deal on our new kitchen appliances. The kitchen is fabulous, the fitting team are fantastic, well skilled and dedicated to making your Happy Kitchen perfect. They have a work pedigree that includes high end luxury boat building so their work quality is exquisite. You just need to keep them fueled with coffee and they also take away all the rubbish. I would happily recommend the Happy Kitchen team to anyone. Mr Hensman

Happy Kitchens are quite unique as we are able to offer top quality products, available in any size, fitted by the best professionals in the business. Change your kitchen and bedroom with a makeover or design and install a new kitchen and bedroom, whichever suits your needs or price range.

GARDEN COMMUNITY

ALRESFORD NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH ASSOCIATION Neighbourhood Watch can have an important role to play in supporting community cohesion. According to a Neighbourhood Watch survey, members are less likely than non-members to feel isolated; they are more likely to know their neighbours, to help them and to volunteer for other things within their community. Lots of people want to see more of their family and friends, but mobility or transport problems make this difficult. Neighbours however, are close by and have huge potential to make a difference to people's lives. People worry about being thought of as nosey. No one wants to be intrusive and Neighbourhood Watch members in particular are understandably averse to being labelled "curtain-twitchers". Without talking to them there's no easy way to tell whether your seldom-seen neighbour feels lonely, is seething with fury at your leylandii, or simply prefers their own company.

DARK EVENINGS ARE HERE – DON’T MAKE IT EASY FOR BURGLARS

Hampshire Constabulary have launched their Lights On campaign: • • • • • • • •

Leave lights on to make your home look occupied Invest in timers that will automatically switch lamps & devices on and off Gadgets are available that turn your main lights on and off Help lower your bills with energy saving bulbs Thieves target homes that look empty Shut and lock all windows and doors when going out Only tell people you trust when going away Now you've protected your home, share our advice with family and friends

Contact your local Village Agent, Denise on 07969 376023

However, it was clear from the survey that many people wish their neighbours were chattier and feel that more contact with neighbours would help them feel less isolated. A significant number of respondents said that "knowing neighbours better", "getting to know other people on my street", "a brief chat with neighbours" and "more friendly neighbours", would help mitigate feelings of loneliness. People don't always see the value of a quick visit or chat. They think that once they have gone, their neighbour will be alone again and that their company doesn't really do any good. But the evidence shows that people absolutely do value those small interactions. Every friendly word adds up to a feeling of being part of a community and being surrounded by people who care about you. Neighbourhood Watch is not purely about crime prevention but also includes a social aspect – people getting to know their neighbours and forging a sense of community. Where a community cares about its members it is difficult for crime to flourish. Neighbourhood Watch doesn't magically make people neighbourly, of course. It attracts people

ALRESFORD GROUP LAUNCHES COURSE TO PUT THE JOY BACK INTO MONEY

Churches Together in Alresford (CTiA) continues its quest to improve quality of life for all residents. They are supporting a course for everyone interested in managing their finances, empowering people to fight debt and poverty before they hit. The CAP (Christians against Poverty) Money Course isn’t religious. It’s for everyone: students; newly retired; single people and families because spring-cleaning finances, revisiting how to set and stick to budgets helps debt-proof people long term, even in uncertain times. Money coaches Clare Pinniger and Suzanne Hodnett leading the course over 3 mid-week evenings early in 2019 said “We aim to work quietly and practically so people take control, plan for the future and weather any storm. New year is ideal as so many of us look at credit card and other post-Christmas bills in sheer disbelief ”. Contact ctia.cap.alresford@gmail.com

who are neighbourly by nature – those who want to have good relationships with those around them and make their area a nice place to live. And it is very effective at reducing crime. The result of this is that areas with an established Neighbourhood Watch scheme tend to have low crime levels, which is great because Neighbourhood Watch is all about keeping people safe where they live. We need to think about what we can do to encourage people to reach out to those who live near them; not to force this, but to consider what motivates people. A key part of this is proving that people really can make a difference. If you don't know your neighbours' names or rarely speak to them, why not reach out today. CHRISTMAS LUNCH FOR MAKINS COURT FOR 2019

In view of the problems experienced by lack of volunteers for the Makins Court Christmas Lunch this year, I have decided to form a Committee so that this will not happen again. The elderly and vulnerable residents of Alresford should not be alone at this time of year, and in the past they have always enjoyed their Christmas Lunch at Makins Court. Lets make it happen in 2019. Anyone interested in joining me on this Committee should contact me on E.Mail heatherhollow@btinternet.com or telephone (01962) 734861 for further details. Pam Stevens

FEATURE

THE FORUM TALKS WITH

T

TIFF NEEDELL

iff Needell is clad in a purple cashmere sweater, tall and slim, he takes his coffee black and is delightfully very chatty. Born in Havant he grew up in Weybridge, Surrey near the Brooklands race track but moved back to Hampshire thirty years ago and for the past fifteen years has lived in a big Victorian house near Stockbridge. “My home is my favourite place here, it has 6000sq. feet more than our previous house along with a twelve-acre garden and was a bargain thanks to a main line railway link going through it – I have my own railway crossing!” Also running through the land is a stretch of the abandoned Southampton to Salisbury canal. “I’ve worked hard on restoring it and I think it’s now the best-preserved section.” The more we talk the more I realise that Tiff ’s home could well be a metaphor for his life - the gently flowing steady water of the canal will certainly get you where you want to go eventually juxtaposed with the dynamic speed of the train rushing headlong to its destination. It’s a train Tiff still wants to be on. ‘I feel like I’m the ‘nearly made it man’, that will be on my head stone” Although he laughs there is dissatisfaction and frustration behind the smile. There shouldn't be dissatisfaction as Tiff has had a successful career dating back to the 1970’s when he regularly raced at Thruxton. He also had a long and successful career as a British racing car driver competing in a wide range of events across the spectrum of the sport, including Formula One and the gruelling Le Mans 24-hour race in which he finished third in1990. Tiff now works in the world of television and motor journalism and writes regular motoring columns for Modern Classics and Drive Tribe. He first came to our screens in 1987 co-presenting the original Top Gear, then co-presenting Fifth Gear for Channel 5 from 2002. He is now presenting Lovecars on YouTube that is proving to have an ever increasing number of views. Tiff is a very popular personality on the after dinner speaking circuit and regularly plays golf at pro-am and charity events. At Thruxton you can enjoy three high speed laps in a BMW driven by Tiff for £150. He is also a member of the Grand Prix Drivers Club exclusive to those who have raced at that level - Tiff qualified for the Belgium Grand Prix in 1980. It's enough to keep most people busy but then Tiff is not most people.

“I don't know why, I mean I never won a Grand Prix. but I’m always happy to play the stooge I suppose - the butt of people’s jokes on those occasions. I would like people to think I've achieved enough, I really want what they have - the money and the respect”. It’s a conundrum that seems to weigh heavy on his mind and one that perhaps may not be solved. Does he take issue with the amount of money in Formula One? “No not at all. Just think of the amount of Premiership footballers sitting on the bench all earning fantastic amounts then compare that to the Grand Prix grid there’s very few drivers earning the big money.” Talking of football, Tiff has a passion for the game. “I love it. I’m a season ticket holder at Southampton FC, have been for years. I’m always in the stands with all the fans I just love the atmosphere and the banter- love a bit of banter! It’s great that my sons still come back for matches it’s a way to keep the family together.” What was the best drive of his life? “Without doubt the Le Mans 24 Hours, both the drivers and their cars have to be at the peak of their performance and it’s an event so steeped in history. But the Macau track near Hong Kong is pretty special and of course I love Thruxton” What does Tiff drive at the moment? “I’m an ambassador for BMW at some of their events and have a 540i Touring on loan while our family car that we own is a twelveyear-old BMW X5 - so my wife and I both drive BMWs! As is the way these days, they’re both automatics even though I actually prefer manuals - I like to be able to drive through the gears that’s the point of driving isn’t it.” “The only other car I own is the Formula Ford Lotus 69F racing car that started my career and which I bought back five years ago some forty years after I sold it! I race it a couple of times a year in the Historic Championship and actually won a round at Thruxton where I had my very first race win in the same car way back in 1972!” What next for Tiff Needell? “I’m trying to develop plans for a short motor magazine television program, just a half hour slot once a week, but it’s a slow process!” Slow maybe, but no doubt it will happen. See Tiff on Lovecars - YouTube. GG.

THE MAGIC OF LIGHT The dark days of winter naturally lead us to think about light. Perhaps in particular, light in our gardens. While we are still in the midst of winter, it is an ideal time to assess how you would like to illuminate your outdoor spaces.

designed. This extends to exterior ceiling, floor and wall lamps together with outside standard lights for your sitting areas under pergolas or glass roofed verandas. Underwater lighting for ponds has become ever more sophisticated too. While clever design and creative planning can conceal the source of the light to create subtle lighting effects to your borders, sculptures, rows of trees or individual shrubs. What is more, from the comfort of your home you can control the lighting with remote controls and dimmers.

Where are the darkest spots? What would you like to see when looking out from the house? How about lighting around the front door which can serve two purposes, being both practical and proving an attractive approach to the house?

Create charm With some clever use of exterior lighting, you can bring a little charm and magic to your outdoor spaces in addition to its practical purposes, such as security lighting or wall lanterns by your front door. Attractive & Dynamic Garden lighting is now attractive and dynamic. It adds just that right touch for both the darker days of the year and for the warmer seasons when you are outside entertaining or relaxing. Additionally, the trend in garden lighting is becoming more artistic. There is a completely new range of highly technical lights and lighting to illuminate and enhance the view of your garden from your home. This includes special effects, down lighters, solar lights, delicate LED lighting strips and recess lights for lawns, decking and paving. It’s all in the design Furthermore, just as outside rooms are becoming more and more popular, so the accessories and materials to add the finishing touches to these spaces are becoming ever more stylish and well

Plan Now The current trend to have wide expanses of glass overlooking our gardens means that outdoor lighting is an art in itself. It helps to create an ambiance of magic and charm with soft, glowing illumination even in the depths of winter. Use the dark evening now to begin planning where best to install lighting and this time next year, as you wait for spring and look out onto a beautifully illuminated garden, you will be very glad you did!

WELLBEING

AN INTERVIEW WITH AN ORTHOPAEDIC SURGEON Mr Mark Frame, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon sat down with Spire Southampton to talk about his love for skiing, how to prepare for the ski season, injuries and the new Rapid Access Ski clinic Mr Frame is offering at Spire Southampton. What got you into skiing? How do you get into University racing? I have always been a keen skier, it definitely helped coming from Scotland with mountains (and snow!) on my doorstep. I actually grew up virtually next door to a dry ski slope and spent any free time I had in a pair of ski boots! As soon as I possibly could I grasped the opportunity to do my ski instructor qualifications and spent years teaching from beginners up to race training. I also had the chance to teach those less fortunate and expose them to a sport they might not otherwise have had the opportunity to experience. It was then a natural step to join the Aberdeen University Ski Club in the cold and snowy North East. It was a great club and great to be a part of the race team. I have always been competitive and bashing slalom poles down on a cold and rainy Scottish night never dampened my enjoyment. Do you still get a chance to teach skiing with your commitments as an Orthopaedic surgeon? I kept up regular teaching when I was an orthopaedic trainee in Glasgow, but like anything life became busy and it is not something that I could fit in between shifts. I now have 2 children and my teaching skills are coming in useful to encourage them to enjoy the sport I love. Where is your favourite ski destination? I loved skiing in Scotland. It’s not for the faint-hearted! Skiing in sleet and over heather, but if you can ski in Scotland, you can ski anywhere! My favourite place is Tignes in France. The food is also slightly better there! With the ski season fast approaching what do you do to prepare? The key thing I do before skiing is making sure I am as physically fit as I can be. Running or cycling to prepare your legs. Stamina is the key. Injuries happen when you get tired and don't concentrate. Keeping your quads in good condition and having the stamina to resist the afternoon burn is vital!

What's the best advice you would give people preparing for the ski season? Give yourself plenty of time to prepare. Gauge your level and work out what your goals are. Everyone is different and that's where having someone else to guide you through a programme is great. Is there anything you can do while on holiday or is all the preparation done before you go? Best thing is to make sure your gear is in top condition and as much as we all like the race skis, make sure your ski gear matches your ability. Have a professional set your bindings so they release correctly if you fall. Last but not least, stop when you’re tired, that one more run might be the worst thing you ever did. It’s never too early for apres! What ski injuries do you commonly see? The most common injuries are tibial fractures and ACL injuries. Getting diagnosed quickly is important as we can now consider you for ACL repair rather than doing a reconstruction. This is only possible in the first 4-6 weeks. How common are they? Should we be worried? These injuries are still rare and you shouldn't worry. It’s just good to be aware and maximise your chances of having a great injury free holiday. What made you want to set up the ski clinic at Spire Southampton? I felt there was a need to have a rapid means for anyone who has had an injury whilst skiing to get diagnosed and treated as quickly as possible. Being able to book your clinic and MRI whilst still in your chalet in France just puts your mind at rest. The advantage of a quick diagnosis also opens the door for ACL injuries to be possibly treated with a new technique of ACL repair and Arthrex Internal Bracing rather than a traditional ACL reconstruction using your hamstring tendons as a graft. This new ACL repair technique could get you back on your feet quicker and with less pain. This needs to be assessed quickly as the window of opportunity is 4-6 weeks. Spire Southampton’s ski clinic allows patients to book appointments from the slopes, happy in the knowledge you’ll get treated as quickly as possible on your return to the UK. LIFE CHANGING SURGERY FOR WEIGHT LOSS New Year, new you? January is often a time for new challenges, new resolutions and new goals. For many of us, our main goal is centred on weight loss. If you’ve been battling your weight for many years this can often feel like an unachievable and insurmountable task. Spire Southampton patient, Katie, had been battling with weight loss since she was 11 years old. With her weight only increasing and her personal well-being going down she decided it was time to make some tough decisions. “I was always a bubbly, sociable character but this has changed dramatically, especially since giving birth to my daughter. I had put on a huge amount of weight and felt like everyone would look at me and laugh or judge me based on how I looked. We had financial stresses because of the business and some personal family issues that were putting a lot of pressure on me. Being an ‘emotional eater’ I found these as excuses to eat and comfort myself. I would then crash diet for a few days until I gave in and binged again, it was a vicious circle that I just felt trapped in.” Katie had tried all the slimming groups, several times over. She had joined the gym and tried to go until her anxiety issues got really bad. Katie even tried hypnotherapy, all of which were short term and before falling back into the same vicious circle.

Her GP referred her to Spire Southampton Hospital where, following pre-surgery support, she met Bariatric surgeon, Mr Michael Van den Bossche. “It may not be common knowledge but morbid obesity, being very overweight, is now classified as a chronic disease just the same as diabetes or high blood pressure” says Mr Van den Bossche “Many overweight people fail to reduce their weight by means of dieting of lifestyle changes. Weight loss surgery is the most effective treatment for obesity and brings a host of medical benefits. In today’s world, obesity is fast becoming the most preventable cause of cancer next to smoking. In other words weight loss surgery can effectively reduce the risk of developing and dying of all sorts of cancer. It also adds extra years of good quality to one’s life expectancy. Who doesn’t want to see their grandchildren grow up?” Following her consultation with Mr Van den Bossche, Katie decided bariatric surgery was the direction she wanted to go in. “Everyone was very honest about surgery and how life changing it could be along with the risks and what I would need to change going forward. At no point did anyone say this would be easy. I can now say that this is a common misconception. Surgery is not an easy option for weight loss. It requires hard work and dedication on the patient’s part and should be taken seriously; it’s a very brave decision.”

PROMOTION Katie had a mini gastric bypass. This is when the surgeon creates a small compartment at the top of your stomach using staples. This will effectively be your new stomach and as it will be small, it will fill up quickly with food, giving you a sensation of fullness. Mr Van den Bossche explains the procedure “The mini gastric bypass is one of the most effective operations to help someone lose weight. During the procedure the stomach is reduced in size and a part of the small bowel is bypassed so that the body cannot absorb all the calories. I was the first surgeon in the UK to do this procedure back in 2010. Since then the procedure has become popular all over the country. The average time to do a mini gastric bypass is approximately 30 to 35 minutes. Patients recover very quickly after a shorter anaesthetic.” Patients normally stay for 2 nights and following surgery Mr Van den Bossche encourages patients to become more active. “Return to gym exercise or other sports activities is allowed after 6 weeks when all the wounds have healed soundly.” This is exactly what Katie did “By week 6 I started swimming small amounts and walking a lot more, the weight was falling off and people were noticing. I gained more confidence with every day and looked forward to buying new bits of clothing to see me through.” “I feel totally in control of my life again, I can run around with my children instead of sitting and watching them play. My risk of developing heart problems or diabetes (both in my family)

have minimised. I am confident, which means I have excelled in work, I socialise more, I have taken on an Open University degree, attended lectures and day schools all involving meeting new people. I love clothes and don’t live in black anymore. Although it is still a constant battle to eat correctly and manage my lifestyle correctly, taking constant planning, hard work, willpower and dedication, I am healthier and happier than I have ever been.” If you are interested in weight loss surgery, please contact Spire Southampton Hospital for more information on procedures, costs and specialists – 023 8091 4471. Consultant General Surgeon, Mr Michael Van den Bossche is offering free mini consultations on Thursday 7th February at Spire Southampton Hospital; please call 023 8091 4471 for more information or to book your complimentary appointment. Please note that mini consultations are an opportunity to ask any questions that you may have, and are not a formal outpatient consultation. If you wish to proceed to treatment or surgery, a full outpatient consultation will be required. care, and, by arrangement, sleep-in care. A care manager will meet with clients, and their family, to discuss the client’s needs and wishes, and agree a package from there, with regular reviews to ensure their needs continue to be met. Every client is allocated a small team of CAREGivers so they will know who to expect, and when, in advance. Each visit from a CAREGiver is a minimum of one hour which allows time to provide quality care. The team specialise in dementia care, and often run free workshops and drop-in sessions for the local community. This has come about from a desire to help local families facing the uncertainty which comes with caring for a loved one with dementia. Home Instead is the only care provider certified to deliver accredited City & Guilds Dementia training, meaning specially trained staff are placed with clients with a form of dementia, giving families the peace of mind that their loved ones are receiving the care and understanding that they need.

Arranging care for yourself or a loved one can be a daunting process. For many people, the most important factor is to stay well and happy in their own home, and the team at Home Instead Central Hampshire can make this achievable. The Central Hampshire branch of Home Instead was set up by local couple, Jan and Steve Gapper, and provides domiciliary care services to elderly clients throughout the Alresford, Winchester, Eastleigh and Chandler’s Ford area.

We achieve this by recruiting only the very best CAREGivers who share our values, and by training and investing them continuously to ensure the care we provide is of the highest standard.’

WELLBEING

Harriet Maton, Reflexology Lymph Drainage (RLD) Practitioner and owner of Aeon Reflexology, discusses the importance of a healthy lymphatic system. It’s always a good time of year to think about how we can improve our general wellbeing, to set new routines, eat more nutritiously and to improve our standard of living, health being at the top of the list! By being a RLD practitioner, I am naturally interested in the importance of a healthy lymphatic system for good physical & mental health, and have been avidly researching about this system of our body since my training 18 months ago, and can probably say, I’m slightly obsessed by it! In Ayurveda, the lymphatic system is better known as ‘rasa dhatu’, meaning ‘the river of life.’ When working properly, the lymphatic system acts much like a flowing river, with complex pathways that carry waste and toxins away, keeping our body fluids in balance to keep us healthy. It is

recognized for its importance in preventive health care, and as a supporting role in every other system in the body, including the immune, digestive, reproductive, detoxification and nervous systems. With regards to women’s health, it can play a vital role in hormonal balance. With so much discussion in the world of naturopathy regarding ‘oestrogen dominance,’ an imbalance thought to be caused by a combination of poor gut flora, levels of xenoestrogens found in foods and plastics, other hormone disruptors and the overuse of oral contraceptives, which has been associated with some of the most common hormonal health issues, from heavy and painful menses, to PMS, hormonal headaches and fibroids. It is thought that there is too much oestrogen stimulation relative to progesterone in modern day living, and the health of a women’s lymphatic system will have a direct impact on her ability to move progesterone around her body. So it may be more important than ever for our lymph to move freely, helping to balance out excess oestrogen. Apart from hormonal concerns, if the lymphatic system is compromised, some of the more common signs include swelling in the hands, feet and ankles. Muscle and joint stiffness, fatigue, breast tenderness and cellulite can also be experienced. RLD is an award-winning, precision technique, developed during clinical practice in cancer care, and proved invaluable when treating breast cancer patients with secondary lymphoedema, and most recently has proved beneficial for other conditions too.

WELLB EING

This hypnotic treatment is not only efficacious & results-driven - many of my clients comment on it being the most relaxing therapy they’ve ever experienced! It focuses on stimulating the lymphatic system via the feet, which works on moving lymph throughout the entire body, not just one particular area. My clients have experienced first-hand the results of receiving RLD, and I have been overwhelmed by it’s positive affects on their health - they have reported increased energy levels and reduced aches and pains (especially in my older clients), relief from painful periods, tender breasts and inflammatory conditions, reduced puffy, swollen limbs, feeling more zen with a clearer mind, and dare I say it, feeling lighter, less congested and even their clothes feeling looser! I completely understand that receiving complementary therapies isn’t for everyone, so to provide you with a more 360 approach to your lymphatic health, I have specialists in the field on-hand, to give you more insight into how and why it is so important to support our lymphatic system on a daily basis, and to keep it moving. Local Sports Scientist and Personal Trainer, James Wood, says “Keeping the lymphatic system moving is important, especially since it doesn’t have it’s own central pump, instead it relies on movement and the action of muscle contraction and relaxation to help maintain the flow of lymph through our body. Gentle exercise performed regularly, will stimulate the movement of lymph fluid and help keep your body and mind healthy. My top tip is to find exercise(s) that you enjoy and can easily fit in with your lifestyle. Dancing, walking, swimming, using the stairs and a variety of deep breathing exercises are great examples, and have been shown to stimulate the lymphatic system and help maintain a healthy lymph flow...... remember, it’s only still water that stagnates, so get moving!” Another important area is nutrition, and ensuring we eat foods which support our lymphatic health, especially if you know yours is compromised. Local nutritional therapist and yoga instructor, Suzanne Cork, promotes anti-inflammatory foods that help to support the lymphatic system.

She says “I recommend organic leafy greens, vegetables from the cruciferous family (cauliflower, kale, broccoli, etc), berries, fatty fish (mackerel, tuna, salmon) and olive oil (buy extra virgin, but don't use it for cooking!) However, my all-time favourite is the wonder root turmeric, which has been used medicinally for thousands of years. Buy the fresh root if you can and combine with black pepper to aid the body’s absorption in a spicy turmeric latte, it tastes great and is full of goodness!” So with all this in mind, lets get supporting our lymphatic system in the way we need and that suits us best, to allow the river of life to keep flowing, and in turn enhance our general health & wellbeing for a more energised 2019! Also, keep an eye out for information on my hormonal health evening coming soon! ALRESFORD SURGERY NEWS Weight Watchers (Now called WW) The Practice team at Alresford Surgery focus on disease prevention and health promotion. We use a positive approach when discussing diet and weight loss with our patients. One of our Practice Nurses, who was studying for a diploma course in Diabetes, came up with the idea of starting a Weight Watchers group at the Surgery. This group runs on Tuesday lunchtime in the Surgery waiting room. With the help and support of the practice team and the expertise from the Weight Watchers Leader, Mary Blanchard, it has proved to be an enormous success. Members like the accessible and familiar surroundings of the Surgery, older members prefer to come during the day and enjoy the social interaction that the meetings bring. After 11 weeks of the group running we have seen a total weight loss of 34 stone, more importantly members are reporting real health benefits, reduced breathless, ability to walk longer distances and be more active. Starting the group at the Surgery was to be a 12 week trial but it has proved to be so successful it is now a permanent fixture with more patients being referred each week. The Alresford Surgery Weight Watchers group meets every Tuesday from 12.30-1.30 in our main waiting room. The meeting is led by Mary Blanchard who has been a Weight Watchers leader locally for many years. The meeting is open to anyone, you do not need to be a patient of Alresford Surgery at attend. Call 0345 602 7068 to find out if you are eligible for 12 weeks free membership at least 7-10 days prior to planning to attend the meeting. Looking after yourselves and your children Coughs. Did you know? The common cold lasts about 10 days and a cough about 3 weeks. Most of them are caused by viruses and so cannot be treated with antibiotics. Most healthy adults will not need antibiotics if they do not appear particularly unwell. However frail, elderly patients, or adults with other medical conditions or medications which make them more susceptible to bacterial illness, may need to be assessed. We know that, when faced with an unwell child, parents often find it difficult to be sure whether the child needs to see a doctor, or whether they can be managed with sensible self-care at home. It can also be hard to judge how urgently a child might need to be seen. Should the child wait for an appointment? Should the child go to A and E? There are two excellent sources of help for parents who are concerned about their children with cough. One is the Healthier Together website http://www.what0-18.nhs.uk which covers a large range of childhood conditions. Another is the Caring for children with coughs website; http://child-cough.bristol.ac.uk which has been produced by Bristol University. We have an example of this leaflet on our “Looking after yourself and your children” noticeboard at the surgery. If you walk straight ahead on entering the surgery, you will see it on the left hand wall before dispensary. Patient Survey We are currently running a survey to find out more about how our patients feel about the services we provide. Hard copies of the survey are available in the surgery or you can take part by visiting our website at www.alresfordsurgery.co.uk. Your views are important to us and we will use the results to produce an action plan. The survey will only take a few minutes to complete and the more responses we have, the better. SALSA Y-SOL - 'FEELING GOOD'

“It’s a new dawn, it’s a new day, it’s a new life - for Me and I’m feeling good” are the wonderful lyrics of Michael Buble’s song and they ring so true for the start of this brand New Year 2019. “Feeling good” that’s what we are after, “feeling good” is what matters, it’s what gives us strength, it lets us enjoy life with all its facets! Bring it on, we say! Yet, how do we get to this state of “feeling good”? Well let me share my own experience with you: Life continues to be very full for me, full of life’s challenges.Yet, what keeps me going and what gives me strength is, that I have Dancing & Yoga in my Life. Even in the most challenging moments in my life, I kept on dancing – I teach Dance & Yoga and this is how I make my living, so there is no letting up. Yet, it always surprised me, how ever low I felt – on the dance floor I came alive. Dancing lifted my spirits and I so enjoyed our Dance Classes and they were filled with Joy and Laughter no matter what. And it is not being fake, it is just what happens when you dance – it is natural. Mental Health is a big Topic at the moment and it absolutely effects every age group. I have heard of children as young as six being diagnosed with suffering from depression…and the queues to get seen by CAMHS are immensely long and speaking from experience, the results frankly not very encouraging… Yet, there are simple ways of how we can help our children and help ourselves: with Dancing and Yoga. Yoga has had the most profound effect in my life. As well as giving me an outer strength, it has given me amazing inner strength and resilience, so I feel ready “to weather any storm in life!” You see, I’ve been there, done that, got the t-shirt! And I know what works, what makes us “feel good”. And from this experience our repertoire of Dance and Yoga Classes has grown over the last 10 years and it is a joy to see what a difference Dancing and Yoga has made in the lives of our Dance and Yoga Friends that have joined us over the years. “It’s a new dawn, it’s a new day, it’s a new life – for you too to start “feeling good!” Looking forward to seeing you on the Dance Floor and on the Yoga Mat! FEATURE

RUFFLING SOME FEATHERS I BY CLAIRE THURLOW

try to go for a walk every day. Even if days are short and the weather is awful, a brisk circuit around the village counteracts that ‘cabin fever’ from winter days spent mainly indoors.

One day it was foggy. Not just a light mist, but a proper, thick fog which enveloped the countryside, obliterating familiar landmarks and much of the road ahead. It wasn’t like this when I started out, but by the time I reached the top of the hill, I could see little more than a few metres in front of me. Fields, woods and hedgerows had all been obliterated. Having got this far, I thought I might as well continue, so I ventured on. If I followed the lane I could hardly get lost in this white-out, could I? But my mind started to wander. A friend had been telling me about a novel she’s working on. It’s a Victorian tale, set in Yorkshire, where thick fog rolls in from the sea and strange creatures stalk the moors. So far, so gothic. My friend had immersed herself so much in the plot, that she can no longer write at night for fear of scaring herself! I shivered and buttoned my coat against the damp cloud which wrapped itself around me. My footsteps echoed on the tarmac, but otherwise the world was strangely quiet. No birds sang, no sheep bleated, no dog barked to break the silence. I quickened my pace; this was not a day for hanging around. Then I saw it. At the furthest point I could make out, a dark shape moved across the road. It was an animal of some kind, but through the swirling mist I couldn’t tell what. It paused and seemed to turn and stare at me. I stopped and stared back. Was it a fox? A large cat, perhaps? Whatever it was, it clearly found me

of little interest, and resumed its way, disappearing into the trees. It certainly didn’t have the lithe grace of a fox or a cat, more of a slow, but confident, strut. What in the world was it? I hurried on, hoping to see it again, but it was not to be. Until the next day.The fog was long gone, and the fields rolled out beneath a pale blue sky. What a difference a day makes. I followed the same route, wondering if I would spot the mysterious creature again. I reached that same turn in the road but was disappointed. I waited for a bit, hoping it might turn up, after all it was the same time of day as yesterday’s walk and I’m not the only one who’s a creature of habit. Nothing. But then, I heard it; a raucous yowl from the rooftop of a nearby house. Perched on the ridge tiles, and watching me with disdain, was a peacock. This must have been the mysterious creature that had crossed my path. He glared down at me, sharp eyes glinting. His plumed head looked ridiculously small against that long body and tail, which must have measured over two metres. The peacock ruffled his feathers, and even from this distance I could make out the metallic blue plumage on the neck and body, and the striking ‘eyes’ on the tail.To reach the vantage point of a roof, the pheasant needs the power of his grey flight feathers. The striking fringed feathers on top are known as coverts and can arch into a fan which reaches the ground on either side. There was little chance of such an elaborate display without a coterie of peahens around, and this chap seemed to be solo, whether a pet or an escapee turned feral. What a shame. A group of peacocks – whether you call them a ‘muster’, a ‘pride’ or, best of all, ‘an ostentation’, would certainly brighten a winter afternoon.

HAMPSHIRE FARE WINS BRITISH FOOD FORTNIGHT COMPETITION The county’s local food group, Hampshire Fare, has been announced as the winner of this year’s British Food Fortnight (22nd September – 7th October) competition Founded in 2002, British Food Fortnight, is a nationwide celebration of British food and drink. Hampshire Fare has been involved in the initiative for the past four years, collaborating with local producers to run sessions in local primary schools aimed at inspiring young children to question the provenance of their food. This year, Hampshire Fare worked with Year 5 pupils at Bartley Junior School near Southampton. Honesty Group, Lyburn Farm, New Forest Fruits and Naked Jam all led sessions covering topics such as how bread is made, fruit growing, jam making and the production of artisan cheese. After being inspired by the events in Emsworth for British Food Fortnight, we arranged an event at Wicor School. Every year since we have selected a new school to work with whilst the previous school has gone on to hold their own event in

subsequent years. In this way, we planted a small seed and slowly it is growing in impact across the county.” The British Food Fortnight competition acknowledges the people behind the most imaginative and inclusive celebrations of local food and the harvest. Entries were received from across the country and included pre-schools, school meals, care homes, hospitals and community festivals. Alexia Robinson, Founder of Love British Food said: “This year the British Food Fortnight competition saw a record number of entries. So many people got involved from food festivals, hospitals, care homes, schools, universities and many more to help us rediscover and appreciate all that is great about British food.We are incredibly proud of all entries we receive particularly from schools and care homes that work to such tight budgets.”

The winners were chosen by a panel of judges including; Cathryn Higgs, Head of Food Policy, Co-op Food, Breige Donaghy, Director of Delicious Food, Co-op, Chef Raymond Blanc, OBE, Liz Earle, MBE wellbeing writer and farmer, Candice Brown, Food Writer and Alexia Robinson, Founder of Love British Food. Together they were looking for events that strengthened the local community, supported the economy and educated the public about British food and eating locally. Hampshire Fare worked alongside other local organisations during the fortnight. Hampshire County Council Catering Services (HC3S) attended Bartley Junior School as part of their programme of British Food Fortnight events. The Lantern Community in Ringwood got involved in making props for the Winchester Cathedral Harvest and local producer market. The Hampshire Fare team also attended ‘A Thought for Food Market’ in Emsworth to really help consumers find out more about the story behind their food. As winners, Hampshire Fare will be given the opportunity to have a Love British Food ambassador at their 2019 event. For more information visit: www.hampshirefare.co.uk

FLIRTATIONS, SEX, DECEPTION AND REGRET: TITCHFIELD’S NEW COMEDY WILL MAKE YOU LAUGH OUT LOUD The Saga of Ken and Sandra is a comedy set amongst the rhythmic beats, bells and ribbons of the Morris Dancing world, and in 2017 was longlisted for the Kenneth Branagh Award. Written by former schoolteacher and now successful local writer, Jules Garvey-Welch, this play launches the start of Titchfield Festival Theatre’s exciting New Play season. Inspired by the popularity of Morris Dancing in the local community, the play invites

you to join in on a carousel of flirtations, sex, deception and regret… marvel as ‘ash is wielded’, ‘handkerchiefs are waived’ and ‘baldrics are slapped’. Ken and Sandra are a couple for whom the passion has gone out of their marriage. Sandra is concerned that Ken doesn’t love her anymore and therefore decides to liven it up a bit in the bedroom. Will Sandra successfully re-ignite the fire in her marriage to Ken with the items she has purchased on-line? This is a bawdy, fun comedy that is certain to entertain us during the dark winter nights of January. Christine Lawrence, a published author, playwright and actor is directing The Saga of Ken and Sandra. Christine says “I am delighted to be directing this fabulous new

“The Saga of Ken and Sandra is a kind of love story, as deep down both partners are still in love although the sexual side of their relationship has become flat. It’s funny, down-to-earth and includes plenty of great comic moments. However, the audience will discover that this play is also about the importance of listening in relationships, as well as dealing with difficult issues such as infidelity.” The Saga of Ken and Sandra opens on Wednesday 9th January 2019 until Saturday 19th January at 7.30pm in the Oak Theatre, St Margarets Lane, Titchfield PO14 4BG. ADVICE COLUMN FROM CITIZENS ADVICE WINCHESTER DISTRICT Lesley Rose, Advice Services Manager for Citizens Advice Winchester District, advises on your rights when buying goods from an online marketplace.

I bought a pair of trainers from a private seller on an online marketplace The advert said they were ASICS but when

they arrived the branding said Basics. They are clearly not what was advertised, are terrible quality and not fit for purpose. Do I have any rights? What can I do? If you’re shopping online from an individual seller, the principle of “buyer beware” applies - which means you are purchasing subject to all defects, and the seller does not have to declare problems. However, the seller must not misrepresent the goods, for example, by claiming they’re a certain popular brand when they are not. Because your trainers are not as described in the advert, you may have grounds to ask for your money back. First, try to fix the issue by contacting the seller to explain the problem, let them know your rights and that you would like your money back.

COUNCILLOR MARGOT DISCOVER THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF POWER NATURAL NAVIGATION I hope you have been able to give WITH BESTSELLING your views on AUTHOR, EXPLORER AND the Winchester Movement Strategy NAVIGATOR, TRISTAN at https://www. GOOLEY hants.gov.uk/ A talk that starts with solo crossings of the Atlantic in a light aircraft and then a small yacht before plunging into the very rare art of natural navigation. Tristan describes how he learnt to find his way using the sun, moon, stars, weather, plants, animals and buildings. He has used the ancient techniques of natural navigation in the desert, on ice, in the jungle, on mountains, in cities, on oceans and in the English countryside and he explains how natural navigation can enrich all our journeys, large and small.

Should this get you nowhere, check to see if the online marketplace has its own protection and disputes resolution system. Finally, if neither of these work for you, consider making a claim to the court, known as a small claim. There is guidance on how to do this on the Citizens Advice website at www.citizensadvice.org.uk. If you need advice, Citizens Advice Winchester District offers a drop-in service in Winchester and Bishops Waltham, and also runs a weekly outreach in Denmead, Wickham and Alresford. I am content that this will improve air quality and reduce the intimidation from traffic to pedestrians and cyclists, however, the impact on the roads that will suffer more traffic has to be assessed, and I am not convinced that £2 m. of our developer contributions should be spent on making it happen. It would be a disaster is only residents of the City Centre gave their views, those of us that have little public transport are just as important.

I would like to update Alresford residents on events planned for the end of 2018 and 2019 with the Community Minibus. The TRO application has now been agreed for the Community Minibus to have 2 parking spaces outside the Community Centre every Friday for passengers to do their shopping and then have a coffee in the Community Centre before being taken home. This is a regular Friday morning event and looked forward to by a lot of elderly people, who otherwise do not get out.

A Social Event for all the volunteer drivers is being planned for February 2019 which will include a presentation to the drivers who have retired because of their age during 2018. This is an enjoyable event when all the drivers come together. Finally, if anyone has some spare time I am now getting desperate for some NEW volunteer drivers to keep the regular shopping and leisure trips going, as well as drivers/escorts for the Lunch Club and Age Concern. Full MIDAS training will be given to all volunteers and also instructions on the Minibus equipment.

EDUCATION

NORTH AND MID-HAMPSHIRE FURTHER EDUCATION AREA REVIEW REPORT

GO FURTHER

In July 2015, the government announced a rolling programme of around 40 local area reviews, to be completed by March 2017, covering all general further education and sixthform colleges in England. The reviews are designed to ensure that colleges are financially stable into the longer-term, that they are run efficiently, and are wellpositioned to meet the present and future needs of individual students and the demands of employers. Students in colleges have high expectations about standards of teaching and learning and the extent to which their learning prepares them to progress further, to higher education or directly into employment. The area is served by 4 sixth-form colleges, (Alton College, Peter Symonds College, Queen Mary’s College and The Sixth Form College Farnborough) and 2 general further education colleges (Basingstoke College of Technology and Farnborough College of Technology) together with a specialist land based provider, Sparsholt College. The local steering group was chaired by Peter Mucklow, the Sixth Form College Commissioner, and supported by a representative nominated by the Further Education (FE) College Commissioner. The steering group met on 5 occasions between May 2016 and October 2016, and additional informal meetings also took place to consider and develop options in greater detail. Membership of the steering group comprised each college’s chair of governors and principal, representatives from Hampshire County Council, Enterprise M3 Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), the Regional Schools Commissioner, and representatives from the Skills Funding Agency (SFA), the Education Funding Agency (EFA), and the Department for Education (DfE). Visits to colleges and support throughout the process were provided by staff from the FE and Sixth Form College Commissioners’ teams. The Joint Area Review Delivery Unit (JARDU) provided the project management, administrative support and developed supporting materials and papers used by the steering group. JARDU also led on consultations with local stakeholders. This area review’s name was changed to North and Mid Hampshire Area Review, from Hampshire Area Review at steering group 5 to better reflect the geographic area it covers.

COMMUNITY

ALRESFORD TOWN COUNCIL REPORTS We would like to wish you all a very happy new year. Our new permanent members of staff are doing a fantastic job getting through the backlog of work they inherited. This puts us in a much stronger position to move forward with a number of important projects that we previously had on hold. Five-year Plan for NATC Recreation Grounds The Recreation and Environment Committee's responsibilities include the care of Arlebury Park, Stratton Bates and Sun Hill. As the first step in the Committee's new five-year plan, it has reviewed the play equipment at each of these parks and agreed that overall they are below the standard that the town’s children deserve. Although the play areas are inspected for safety and repairs continue to be made, much of the equipment has gone beyond its expected lifespan and other parts have been added from time to time. The result is that all these areas look tired and the equipment is uncoordinated. New equipment of a high standard is costly. Having considered all the alternatives, the Committee agreed that instead of diluting our resources by spreading improvements across all three parks, the Council should concentrate on making one of the town's play areas into a place for Alresford to be proud of and that our children will be asking us to take them to. We considered factors like the proximity to the geographical centre of the town and access for all.We are glad to let you know

that, with the backing of the whole Council, we are planning to instal a new play area at Stratton Bates. We are aiming to carry out the project to a high standard and have recognised that this will require funding significantly beyond the Committee’s existing budget and what is currently held in reserve by the Town Council.

Whilst the play equipment at both of the other sites will continue to be maintained, no major additions will be made to either Arlebury Park or Sun Hill play areas until the facilities at Stratton Bates have been fully revamped. Once that objective has been achieved, we will review the remainder of the town’s facilities. We are drawing up a first draft plan for the new play area. This will allow us to ask for initial quotes and estimate a realistic budget for the project. As well as using the money NATC spends on your behalf, we will be looking for alternative funding from other local authority and grant sources, together with assistance from any voluntary groups, corporate and private donors and sponsors that might be willing to help us. If you know of any generous organisations or people that may be willing to help the community in this way, please contact the NATC office by email to: townclerk@newalresford-tc.gov. uk or on 01962 732079.

Once the project is more advanced, we will ask you for your comments to help us select the right type of play equipment to engage a range of age groups. As part of the same five-year plan, the Recreation & Environment Committee would also like to install a planted sheltered area, perhaps to include a natural wooden structure for teenagers to use as a place to sit, in one area of Stratton Bates Recreation Ground. As you may already know, we are also looking at the potential to improve the skatepark and the area immediately surrounding it, including the youth shelter at Arlebury Park. Preliminary work has already started on the plans. Although the changes are likely to be modest, we have been told by the skatepark users we consulted that they are much needed and will make a great difference to the park's use. We know that the work we are committing to under Recreation & Environment's five-year plan will – as the name suggests – take some time, so please be patient and do let us have your comments when the time comes. Lime Trees A number of residents have expressed concern in relation to reports in both this column and the Hampshire Chronicle that HCC are looking into the best ways to manage the epicormic growth of lime trees in the town. At the time of writing, no decision had been taken by the County. To clarify NATC's position, we have not asked HCC to remove these trees. We will seek to have an input in the County Council's final decision, taking into account their specialist advice together with the concerns of those residents who have contacted us.

Ash Dieback Ash Dieback is going to have a massive and devastating impact on our local trees and landscape. The species accounts for more than 10% of the trees in the South East. Nationally it is predicted that we will lose somewhere in the region of 150 million trees. Affected ash become brittle, so it is important that any diseased trees in public areas are taken down before they cause any damage. Please consider the safety of any trees you are responsible for, especially near roads and footpaths. Last month we let you know about the tree survey that HCC undertook for us.This revealed Ash Dieback in three trees in the Memorial Gardens and we have reluctantly

THEATRE REVIEW: BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, WINCHESTER

“We are the people of this town,” chant the villagers at the start of Beauty and the Beast; this year’s Christmas panto at Theatre Royal, Winchester. The scenery and costumes make a fantastic first impression. Early on we learn that it is set in France – the land of current protest and unease – but then there is mention of Brexit, too. The two-hour performance is littered with plenty of fun, jolly japes, double entendres and lots of ‘Oh no it isn’t’. In the shopping scene where Wally (Ed Thorpe) arrives on stage with a trolley, mum Dotty (Julian Eardley) - in a flamboyant dress that only befits a pantomime dame - asks whether he got what she wanted. “Did you get Oxo?” she questions. “No, they ran out of stock.” And so the gags continue to roll right on until “Bras?” “No they went bust!” Writer and director James Barry has clearly enjoyed himself here and even my daughter Harriett (7) gets the jokes and is in stitches. The cooking scene delivers another volley of laughs. Poor old Wally can’t seem to ask for flour without it being blown into his face in

Also, its important to mention other sponsors that were unable to attend including Big Scaffolding..(missed out on winning a door mate!), Covers...press release due soon, Tim Miller, Hilton Banks, Orchid Sky, SRC Carpentry, AST, Exclusive Double Glazing, Claas Western and Cleeve Construction. All your support and generosity is vital and so gratefully received. Our sponsors are one thing, your support to turn up in rain and snow is never under estimated. We can't thank you enough. We hope you continue to feel welcomed and included. only the slapstick way that pantomime can deliver. My wife Caroline and I enjoy watching the reactions of our three children throughout the performance. They are thoroughly engrossed, lost in the land of make believe. It’s a chance to dream and they will inevitably re-enact parts of this performance back at home. While for me, Dotty is the strongest and most enjoyable to watch, all the cast needs congratulating. “I shall dream about the witch [Malevolent] (Sarah Annakin),” says Henry (2) who is enthralled for the whole performance; a massive achievement.

ALRESFORD CHAMBER OF COMMERCE JANUARY 2019 Alresford Chamber Project – Lighting up Alresford / Late night shopping evening Thank you again to volunteers from Chamber members and The Alresford PIGS for all the hours which went into Lighting up Alresford last month with over 150 Christmas trees. Our thanks also to the refreshments provided by the Horse & Groom & Sarah’s Sandwich shop, plus invaluable assistance from Prospect Fencing. Did anyone spot the trial of LED lights down the Dean? What a boost to the festive atmosphere for both residents and visitors, with the shops extending the decorations to windows and door ways. Thank you to the Test Valley Band,

A new year brings new opportunities. A huge part of what we do is with our minis. Run by players, members and lovely ARFC people, every Sunday on the pitches, you will see lots of small people having such fun. Our future, their future. Please come and watch what we do. We aim to be the best we can, and provide the best feedback we can. Thank you for your support in 2018, we look forward to a brilliant 2019. Not a traditional pantomime, this love story with its lessons about beauty, substance and character could well go on to stand the test of time. It is sure to make many happy families this festive season. “I laughed at the same jokes as you did,” Caroline tells me later. We always have done but the challenges of parenthood, especially of late, can leave you feeling that you have lost your sense of humour. On our way back through the city centre we stop and watch the Eastleigh Scout Band playing Christmas carols and it is a perfect end to our little trip to Winchester. By Tim Saunders whom the Chamber sponsor, playing in the the town at the late night shopping, which was well supported by local shops. Frequently Asked Questions The Repair Specialists

Here’s a selection of frequently asked questions especially for you sceptics (you know who you are). 1. When you say ‘carpet’ what do you mean? We mean average size areas, say 10x12ft ish. But we don’t quibble if the areas are a little larger - it’s all done on fairness really. 2. Do you move furniture? Our pricing policy reflects the time it takes to clean working around furniture, rather than moving it. any three carpets That said, we are Have for example, happy to move your three piece suite backwards and forwards cleaning under it and replacing it back into piece position. What we don’t price into the job at these discount prices is and your three moving large pieces of furniture like bookcases, sideboards or wardrobes. Similarly we are not insured upflat-screen for Andover to move electricalsuite items, freshened in particular tvs. Again we apply common sense and fairness to the situation and inevitable we do end up moving some furniture around, even at these discount prices. 3. just £167! Are there any ‘hidden’ extra costs? The prices quoted above are fully-inclusive and are the actual prices you will pay.

DON'T LET GO BALLOON AND LANTERN RELEASES

The Marine Conservation Society Don't let go - Support a ban on balloon and lantern releases We need your help to show that balloon and lantern releases aren’t just a moment of fun without consequences later. Balloons sold as “degradable” are known to last a number of months, even years, and pose a choking threat to wildlife at sea, and on land. Balloons, balloon string and sky lanterns leave a permanent hazard. Now, forward-thinking local authorities and businesses are seeing the need to ban releases on their land, and you can add your support for others, too. Pledge your support for a ban on balloon and lantern releases in your area. More and more Councils are voting to ban the release of balloons and lanterns on their land. They’re making that decision after pressure from local people. Now we want to ramp up that pressure in areas where letting go isn’t on the Council agenda. Pledge your support below to help actively target Councils and campaign on a local level.

I

am sure we have all purchased and accidentally released a balloon into the sky at some point in our lives, or a son or daughter has by accident. Have you ever thought where do they go? Studies on balloon biodegradability provide disturbing figures, especially for foil based Mylar balloons which are made of synthetic nylon with metallic coating. These are non-biodegradable and research suggests that they will last for tens of thousands of years in our environment. Although latex balloons do biodegrade with significant time, the plastic plugs and cords that are attached to them do not. These cords have been found to trap and kill wildlife. Then there is the additional issue of balloon plastic waste drifting into our oceans. Parties are a huge contributors to plastic waste, the Mylar balloons being of the greatest concern, but thankfully there are websites dedicated to providing sustainable products for parties, like www.littlecherry.co.uk. As editor of the Forum, whilst walking my dog around our beautiful Itchen area I have collected 14 Mylar balloons in the last year. Generally these have a date on them, one showing a date of 2008. Even after 10 years in our countryside I could still clearly make out the words 'Happy Birthday' on it, the balloon hanging from a branch in Cheriton Wood. The Marine Conservation Society have a dedicated page to try and bring some controls to this form of littering by banning balloon and lantern releases which is already in place in many counties, but not Hampshire.

Where are they already banned? Our map shows how many councils have banned either balloons, lanterns or both. There is still a lot of work to do though so please add your voice by pledging your support above. You can also check our list of Councils with bans to see if yours is on there. What else can you do? Why not tweet/Facebook your council and encourage your social media networks to do the same? Copy and paste the text below (editing the Twitter name) to tweet your Council and/or write on your Council’s Facebook page. Twitter #Balloons aren’t good in the #environment. Please (@mycouncil) #Dontletgo on your land.Vote to ban upward #littering @mcsuk Facebook Sky lanterns and balloons may look pretty but they can harm wildlife at sea and on land (not to mention the fire risk they also pose). Will you follow other Councils and ban releases on your land? https://www.mcsuk.org/campaigns/dont-let-go #DontLetGo Let us know what they say! (NB. If your Council already has a ban, why not tweet or Facebook them to say ‘thank you’ instead!) [Note: Map Contains OS data © Crown copyright [and database right] (2017). WINCHESTER CITY COUNCILLOR MONTHLY REPORT JANUARY 2019 If you have any comments or questions on the content of this report, please do not hesitate to get in touch. And of course, on any matter relating to Winchester City Councillor responsibilities where I will help. Handyperson Service WCC has started an initiative for residents over 60 or living with a disability. Small repairs and adaptations can be undertaken at a subsidised rate for those who qualify. Tel. 01962 848455 and further information : http://www.winchester.gov.uk/housing/ older-persons-services/handyperson-service Fly-tip - the consequences! Anyone having work done needs to ensure any materials are disposed of in the correct manner. Magistrates Court prosecution can result in a fine of up to £50,000 and a prison sentence, in a Crown Court the fine is unlimited. Both the originator household and the fly-tipper are culpable. Living with and beyond cancer A recent event hosted by the Hampshire Hospital NHS Foundation Trust at the Holiday Inn, highlighted the need for self-care during and after cancer treatment. An important part of which is physical activity and the mental support this can provide individuals taking part in classes

offered at River Park run by their own staff and also WCC officers. There are a number of other rehabilitation programmes, as part of the exercise referral scheme, to support individuals with long term health conditions. Citizens Advice Bureau The Winchester branch of the CAB will be relocating to WCC’s offices in Colebrook Street early in 2019. They have a very small paid staff and a large pool of volunteers who provide advice on a myriad of problems, offering outreach branches in Alresford and Bishops Waltham. All volunteers are trained and qualified to offer financial or other advice in order to deliver a high quality service. Debt problems are a particular problem for many and huge savings have been made for residents across the Ward. Parish and Town Council grants are vital to continue the service for those in need. No charge is made and although some clients do make donations, some are unable. Individuals can become regular donators to the Charity should they wish. Equally you can offer to be a volunteer. Winchester Sport & Leisure Park, Bar End The planning application was passed on the 31 October 2018. Opposers raised the reduced court size but equally wanted to see mitigation for the increased CO2 emissions. Costs and the reality of what actually delivers are a continuing challenge to provide a centre of this size – set to have

SPACE LECTURE - SOLVING THE NEAR-EARTH ASTEROID PROBLEM 9TH JANUARY THE LECTURE Applying Missile Defence Technology to Solve the Near Earth Asteroid Problem Alexander Godfrey (Lockheed Martin). The Chelyabinsk meteor in 2013 caused approximately £10 million worth of damage and led to 1500 people seeking medical attention. The object remained undetected prior to its atmospheric entry and a larger

meteor would be catastrophic if it happened over a city. Before panic sets in; some comfort can be taken that systems already exist, or are being developed, that could deal with this threat. With the technology potentially at our fingertips, this presentation primarily explores whether or not there is a strong enough business case for the inhabitants of Earth to pay for such a system. THE SPEAKER Mr Godfrey is a Senior Systems Engineer working at Lockheed Martin UK – Ampthill, technically leading the pursuit and execution

of new business civil space programmes. Most notably he has worked on ESA Space Rider, ESA Mars Sample Return Orbiter, Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generators as well as several classified exoatmospheric programmes. The lecture will be held twice, first at 4.30pm and then at 6.30pm, respectively at Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium. Tickets are £8 for the 4.30pm lecture, and £10 for the 6.30pm lecture. KEEPING YOU PET FIT AND HEALTHY FOR THE NEW YEAR January is the time of year that many of us make a New Year’s resolution. The most common one is to improve one’s health and fitness usually by way of improving our diet, losing weight and increasing the amount of exercise we do. We can also do this for our beloved furry friends, helping them to maintain a healthier lifestyle and increase their lifespan. Obesity in pets is very much on the rise with one study by the PDSA citing that around 1 in 4 cats and 1 in 3 dogs are currently overweight. Obesity can cause many long-term medical conditions that can significantly reduce your pet’s quality of life as well as shorten their life span. Some of these medical conditions include heart conditions, diabetes, joint dysfunction and pain, high blood pressure, breathing difficulties and exercise intolerance as well as putting them at greater risk during procedures involving the need for a general anaesthetic.

achievable weight loss plan to fit your lifestyle and that of your much loved pet. The Cedar Veterinary Group Cuddly Club clinic will provide the ideal opportunity and environment to receive individual treatment plans and advice from a veterinary nurse specially trained to deliver information in a personalised way and free from medical jargon. An exclusive service in the heart of Alresford

A veterinary professional can help to determine if your pet is overweight by way of a clinical examination. This will involve carrying out a general health check and body condition score to determine fat and muscle condition as well as a weight check as even individuals of the same breed may have a different body shape or frame size from the next and so the ideal weight for one pet may not be the right weight for another.

LIVE AND LET THRIVE T

ear-wet hair at her temples, she lies on the bed. Needing to cry great racking sobs and rail at the world, she is silent. Deafening grief won’t turn around that flight to Brisbane and bring her girl back. Lying on the bed, that morning vacated by her twenty-five year old baby, she turns her head and inhales the sleeping scent of her child. No more binge-watching bad TV on a Sunday night till the small hours, knowing that the weekend will be over once they go to bed. Or dressing in their one-sies to watch The Hunger Games. All of them. Again. Hands in a box of maltesers. Or hugging her, warm and real and whole, not some image on a laptop. “It won’t be so bad, Muzzy – we can Facetime.” Not so bad, just bloody awful. Now that her eyes are open and the leaking tears slow, she looks up at the glow-in-the-dark stars they never quite got around to taking down. There are spiders there in all four corners of the room, too. Good job her daughter didn’t clock them. Well, no point in turfing them out of the room now there’s no-one else in residence. Live and let thrive. A bedroom now spare and empty of her girl, but still filled with her presence. Along with three large bin bags. “Muz – didn’t get around to sorting out these.” She’d put Post-Its on them; Charity eBay Muzzy How she thought ‘Muzzy’ was going to squeeze herself into clothes two sizes too small, she wasn’t sure. Maybe she’d had more faith in her mother’s ability to stick to a diet than was strictly realistic. The fashions were probably too young in any event. Yesterday, her girl’d been writing on the sticky pads. Yesterday, she’d been packing, looking excited and painfully so much younger than her quarter century. Yesterday, sat just here on the bed, checking over her passport, ticket and money. Yesterday.. all my troubles seemed so far away. One of the spiders scuttled out of its corner with surprising speed and made it half way across the ceiling, before changing its mind and scuttling back. Now it looks as though they’re here to stay. Oh I believe in yesterday. The mournful ear-worm continued unabated in her head and her throat tightened. The spider repeated its scuttling manoeuvre. “Which one are you?” Talking to herself now to distract the tears clamouring to

fall again. “Ringo, John, Paul or – who’s that other one – can never remember his name..” A voice calls up from downstairs. “Is that you love? Are you alright? Would you like a cup of tea?” He is hurting too, but blessim, he is of the belief that a cup of tea, if not quite a panacea, will surely lessen the sting. And maybe he’s right she thinks, as she heaves herself off the bed and out of the door. Switching off the light, she remembers “George.. that’s him. G’night boys.” ....................................... Putting post in the bedside drawer of the spare room. Photographed and Watsapp-ed, it can be destroyed when her girl’s back for a visit next year, or maybe the year after. And her silver christening bangles have turned up. A bit random, but will she want to keep them – they’re a bit titchy? She puts them in the cupboard and they can be taken back to Oz next visit. Or not. Probably they’ll go into the eBay bag that she still hasn’t got around to sorting out. Looking around; five spiders now, they’ve been joined by a smaller one, but is that a spiderling or a sightseer? It’s living near the light fitting. Well, they can’t be the Beatles anymore, which is fine, she never really liked them anyway. Always thought the Monkees were better. Controversial, probably. P’raps they’re the Rolling Stones – aren’t there five of them? She’s not sure – and not sure that she’s very keen on the Stones either. Thinks they only did one good song, ‘Paint it Black’, but it’s in her top ten, so she forgives them for all the others. It’s not so bad with Facetime, actually. At least she gets to see her daughter, her face and expressions as she talks. How did people cope years ago? Exchange flimsy, tear splashed air mail letters. As many and as often as they were, they would never be enough. She has a thought. Take That; there’s definitely 5 of them, or there were. Loved ‘Rule the World’, her and her girl’s special anthem from ‘Stardust’, their go-to movie when Christmas tree decorating every year. She’ll be doing that on her own this December. Those tears, always hovering. ....................................... See next months' Forum Magazine for Part 2 © 2018 Lucia Foster-Found www.luciafosterfound.com

HAMPSHIRE MUM

DOMESTIC GOD? “It’s all about getting into good habits mum.” Star 1 stood with a large black sack one hand and a duster in the other.

I has his mothers’ shopping gene, all the clothes he was keeping were colour coded in the wardrobe while others had been separated in to clothing bank and for donating to Star II. “Right Mum”, he handed me a pile of Jack Wills and Super Dry,” these are for him but I’m going to sort his room first, it’s really disgusting I can smell something in there I’m sure.”

I was suspicious- who are you and what have you done with my son? Star I had in fact been planning his next day of for some time, lots of pledges to clean his room even redecorate it, most of which had fallen on my deaf ears happy in the knowledge it would never happen. Yet here he was explaining at great pains the cleaning process - as if I wasn’t skilled enough! Yes the rooms of Star I and II were not that brilliant, clean of course but not so that one would risk consuming the various confectionary that is secreted in hidey-holes, trust me I have thought about it. But I figure at the age of twenty-one and sixteen respectively all I should be doing is pushing the piles of clothes into a bundle with the hoover, the rest is up to them. By retiring from the more refined areas of household chores, such as litter removal, washing collection and dusting I am in fact doing them a massive favour - how else will they learn to look after themselves? The answer to that it would seem is actually not very well. To be fair Star I had never been that messy but since lovely Tiny Dancer girlfriend has been on the scene he decided to up his game. So there I stood in the doorway, not daring to tread beyond the sparkly threshold, while he explained the art of t-shirt folding. It was a revelation although I did have to stifle a yawn. Sometimes when you look at your children you are immediately hit with the realisation that genetics are so much more that eye and hair colour. There can be no doubt that Star

I have to say I felt a little guilty, my resolve crumbled rather, had I really been such a bad neglectful mother that my youngest was living in squalor? Judging by what refuse was uncovered then yes it would appear so, I had no idea one teenager could consume so many Swiss rolls! The gene of mine that Star I clearly does not have is the one that deals with sentimentality, he ruthlessly culled the last remnants of childhood converting Star II’s boudoir into a cool man cave with just a flick of a duster; oh and four black sacks of rubbish. Then it occurred to me that if Star I is that good at de-cluttering and cleaning he may like to attack the rest of the house, I could hide my really precious things and then let him loose! Although maybe not, mine is not the only resolve to weaken. After a recent night out The Husband and I returned to find the remains of a Chinese takeaway in its bag waiting patiently for the dustbin, various glasses and bottles dotted about the lounge and the dishwasher, although loaded with dirty crockery, still awaiting a tablet and to be turned on. Oh well one room at a time then, like he said it’s all about getting into good habits. There’s the first resolution gone. BY SANDRA PAGAN
