like. Now when you think about it, you’re getting 95% of what you would with a new kitchen, it is exception value, just read our reviews to see what our customers think. Will it look like a new kitchen? Yes, if you give your kitchen a full makeover it will, and the quality is probably a better finish than what you might get from national retailers.

A kitchen makeover can be as much or as little as you want it to be, from just swapping the cupboard doors and hinges, all the way up to changing everything other than the units. Here are some of our most frequently asked questions that should help you understand what can be achieved, why replace it when you can reface it!

Do you use your own fitters? Yes indeed we do, and our Master Craftsmen have a background in the Super Yacht industry, so you are in safe hands.

Our doors are not a standard size is this a problem? No problem at all, our doors are all made to order here in the UK, so we can have them made in any size.

Will the colour of the units change? Yes, we can reface any units that are on show such as sides of tall units or units either side of the hob. We can even change the colour of the front edge of your units. Will a makeover stop us from changing the layout? No, in fact most makeovers we do involve some form of a change in layout, our most common being installing a tall oven housing for an eye level oven.

Choosing your residential property refurbishment partner is a big decision. We aim to ensure that the refurbishment of your home centres around you and your individual needs. With our extensive range of services, you can be sure we have plenty of options for you.

STEVE BRINE MP - APRIL NEWS When I look back, one of my achievements as our country’s Public Health Minister will I hope be a significant increase in the number of women attending their cervical screening appointments. You may think this is a minor issue – especially given other events taking place – but it matters to us all. Around 2,600 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer in England each year, and almost 700 will die from the disease. We estimate that if everyone attended screening regularly, 83% of cervical cancer cases could be prevented so that’s my aim. New research from Public Health England (PHE) shows that screening rates are at a 20-year low, with 1 in 4 eligible women (those aged 25 to 64) in the UK not attending their test. So, working with my team at PHE, I am spearheading the effort which will encourage women to respond to their invitation, and if they missed their last screening, to book an appointment at their GP practice or at the very least discuss it with them.

• Innovative designs to maximise your living space • A beautiful end result through quality workmanship

• Personal service where solutions are tailored to your requirements • Complete transparency in service and pricing

• Ongoing customer care as well as after care, once the work has been completed

info@morrisparker.co.uk • www.morrisparker.co.uk

The new campaign provides practical information about how to make the test more comfortable, and gives reassurance to women, who may be fearful of finding out they have cancer, that cervical screening is not a test for cancer but for abnormal cells or the HPV virus allowing for preventative action to be taken. I believe it is a tragedy that women are needlessly dying of cancer when a simple test can identify any risks early on. We hope this new campaign - the first of its kind in this country - will save lives and I am very proud to be leading this on behalf of the Government. Regular screening, which only takes a few minutes, can help stop cervical cancer before it starts. Improving the detection and diagnosis of cancer is a core part of our Long Term Plan for the NHS backed and will be a cornerstone of the major Prevention Green Paper ‘Prevention is Better Than Cure’ I am currently writing. It is all backed by record increases in NHS funding. My hope is to see a future generation free of cervical cancer but we will only achieve our vision if women take up their screening invitations. This is a simple test which takes just five minutes and could save your life. It’s just not worth ignoring. The campaign is also being supported by charities, including Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust. Activity includes new advertising on TV and other channels, together with the cascade of information through GP surgeries and pharmacies. Finally, you can find more of my work, including my reaction to the latest Brexit developments, via my website at www.stevebrine.com but please ‘like’ my Page at www.fb.com/SteveBrineMP for instant updates. GARDEN

LAWNS ARE HUNGRY FEEDERS; LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT WHAT THEY NEED TO REMAIN HEALTHY THROUGHOUT THE YEAR

F

ar too few gardeners understand what goes into the perfect lawn. Most think it is okay to pick up a bag of weed & feed, sprinkle it liberally on the lawn and all will be okay.Your lawn has a complex relationship with nutrition, which changes throughout the growing season and these things need to be taken into consideration if you want a healthy, attractive, disease free lawn.

You may be thinking that surely it can’t be that complicated. Let’s try to explain the basics. When it comes to lawn nutrition there are really three main things to think about; fertiliser composition, timing and application methods.

that as the days warm and the plant needs more nutrition it is gradually made available. It tends to be more expensive but it certainly is effective, provides professional results and gradual grass growth, rather than a sudden burst of growth resulting in excess mowing requirements. SO WE HAVE COVERED COMPOSITION AND ALSO TIMING OF APPLICATION. LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT APPLICATION METHODS Most home owners who buy their lawn feed from the garden centre will have a choice between granular or liquid feeds. As we mentioned earlier, ideally you want a product that releases its nutrients into your lawn slowly, as required, over time. There are two downsides to cheaper liquid feeding. The first is that it tends to be immediate.Your lawn gets an instant food hit then nothing. The other issue is that liquid feeding can be very time consuming and it’s difficult to get the application rates right. We do use liquid, foliar feeds later in the season when we can mix a complex combination of micro-nutrients, amino acids and soil conditioners in a flow release formula that more appropriate for professional use.

Fertilisation is important as it influences the colour of your lawn, its ability to cope with the stresses of drought, mowing and extremes of temperature and to fight against disease and weed infiltration. Choosing the right fertiliser and applying it correctly really is the key to success. Chemical and organic fertilisers display the nutrient content by way of three different numbers. These three numbers represent the compounds Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium (or Potash). Often displayed as N-P-K. The numbers correspond to the percentage of each of these compounds in the fertiliser inside the pack. That’s the easy bit! What each of these compounds does for the plant is probably the most important part. Nitrogen helps leaf growth. Phosphorus helps the growth of roots and flowers, and Potassium is important for the overall health of the plant. When to promote leaf or root growth is really the key to successful lawn nutrition. You want healthy leaf growth in the growing season to encourage a stronger grass plant, but you don’t want to go into winter with too much leaf that can be damaged by the bad weather. High nitrogen fertilisers encourage quick leaf growth but potentially make the plant more susceptible to the attacks of pests and diseases. Phosphorus is important going into winter to encourage healthy and robust roots to support your lawn throughout the challenging months ahead. Another important factor in selecting the right lawn fertiliser is the type of nitrogen actually in the product. Nitrogen fertiliser may consist of fastrelease or controlled-release nitrogen. For lawns, fertilisers containing controlled-release nitrogen sources are best. Lawn care professionals tend to use coated granular product. The coating is formulated to break down gradually over time, therefore providing a slow release of fertiliser as the plants require it. Cheaper fertilisers break down with moisture. We use a technical fertiliser which activates as the temperature increases, ensuring

Controlled-release granular feed is by far the best choice for amateur use. Most gardeners will attempt to apply this themselves and this can create issues. Application by hand is almost impossible to get right. The granules slip through your fingers easily and distribution is uneven. Apply too much to one area and you scorch the grass, often blackening or killing it in patches. Uneven application results in uneven grass growth. Ideally use is a broadcast spreader consisting of a hopper holding the fertiliser and releasing a controlled amount onto a rotating disk, powered by the forward movement of the wheels, distributing the granules in a controlled and even manner. The amount of fertiliser released is controlled by adjusting holes in the base. Getting the quantities right is important and you must calibrate the spreader before you use it, based on the flow rate of the fertiliser, the granule size, the application rate required and the size of the hopper holes. It’s important not to miss any of the lawn or to overlap as you make each pass with the spreader to avoid stripes. I’ve tried to make things as simple as possible but lawn nutrition, product selection and application rates can be relatively complicated. PUTTING HIS BODY ON THE LINE - THANK YOU OUR SCOTTISH FRIEND This is my last entry of the season and what a roller coaster of a season it was. Normally we would inform you of results and April fixtures but instead please read this and for further info please look at the website. After reading this brilliant letter below, I'm sure you understand why this entry is slightly different. For those of you that witnessed the battles on Saturday 23 February, you will agree that every player put their bodies on the line. That said, there was one negative. Below is a letter from one of the legends of this club on and off the pitch. “FAO fellow lovely ARFC players, supporters and greater club family. As most of you are aware I sustained quite a significant injury on Saturday at home doing what I love most and Representing this great club for the Alresford men's 2nd XV during another momentous double header victory at home. I just want to thank all of my fellow players and club members who came to my aid in order to get me off the pitch to await the ambulance (which thankfully allowed the game to continue subsequently go on to topple the undefeated winning streak if IOW 2's).

For more information please visit: www. goodwood.com/sports/horseracing/fixturesevents/opening-saturday/ The fact we won a hard fought game and had a double header victory was of great comfort to me. Unfortunately my Orthopaedic consultant has since informed me now the severity of my injury means I will no longer be able to continue to play the sport I love. With a Femur fracture and complete knee dislocation rupturing my MCL and ACL entirely, I am looking at several operations and a lengthy recovery time just to get on my feet again. As devastating as this is to me I am relieved I will at least get back to being on my feet. I have had a long playing career spanning over 20 years and Rugby has always given me so much more than it has taken from me. In my (much lighter and fitter) youth when playing inside centre for the SRU and Glasgow development youth teams I enjoyed a great standard of rugby and overcame a shoulder reconstruction at the age of 18. Although I enjoyed getting back into playing University Rugby for Glasgow Caledonian Uni, on moving down to the sunny south of Englandshire I had moved away from playing and being involved in club rugby for some 3-4 years. That was until we had moved to small village called Ropley- somewhere in rural Hampshire, Englandshire that my Glaswegian brain could only think of a set from Midsomer Murders. This is where I saw the newly erected sign for "Alresford Rugby Club" on a late summers Thursday afternoon where I went in to find out more and had the pleasure of meeting Mr Scott Cleeve who was propping up the

Storm Gareth’s gusty winds couldn’t disrupt over 50 keen dog walkers who took part in the annual Home-Start Dog Walk to raise funds for the family support charity. Two walks departed – one long and one short – striding through the glorious countryside around Old Alresford. The fields were muddy but the dogs had a great time and the walkers were welcomed back to Pinglestone Barn with a bountiful ploughman’s lunch and a choice of hearty home-made soups. The 17th century barn was decked with spring flowers and fairy lights by owner and charity Patron Lady Wakeham, who welcomed the walkers back on their return in bright sunshine. Charity Chairman Liz Cooper thanked the soup makers and helpers and paid special thanks to walk sponsors Gay Dog Boarding kennels for their continued support. “This is always a fun day and we have never had to cancel a walk yet because of the weather – dog walkers are such a healthy and determined bunch and they weren’t phased by the conditions.” Bar. I subsequently ended up at training that week where I met Mr Gavin Jasnisch who's first Norfolk introduction wasn't "hi pleased to meet you " but was "orite - you available Saturday " and the rest is history. Without getting too sentimental, I just want to say it has been a great pleasure and honour to play out my final matches and battles for such a special Rugby Club. ARFC is advertised as "Hampshire's friendliest Club" however I would go as far as to say it is much more than that modest statement. This club is something special and never have I known such an inclusive and positive sports club, especially one with such a young history. My personal highlight as a player will probably match many of yours, which was for both men's 1st and 2nd XV to win their leagues respectively. With the 2s securing that win with a home victory against local Rivals Farnborough, that is a memory I will carry for life. Although my playing days are over I'm sorry to say you won't get rid of this "Jock" or" sweaty sock" so easily as now you can even buy IRN BRU in Alresford's very own Co-op. See you all soon you lovely people. Kind Regards, Calum” Thank you Big Man, there is always a place for you in the bar and by the pitch side. - All at Alresford RFC alresfordrfc.weebly.com

HOMELESS CAT CRISIS Cats Protection estimates that there are now around ten million homeless cats in the UK alone. Many cats are made homeless because they are simply left behind when people move home, or they are dumped or abandoned. The population increases, as cats are not neutered, leading to thousands of unwanted kittens. A number of charities, including Cats Protection, are sometimes able to offer free/reduced cost neutering depending on the circumstances.

IF YOU GO DOWN TO THE WOODS IN MAY, YOU ARE SURE OF A BIG SURPRISE! Do you remember this? No, not the tree, but all the people, who came to enjoy singing at the Church in the Wood on the second Sunday in May for the last few years. At 4pm on May 12th 2019 ‘Rev Tim Daykin of Radio Solent fame will be taking the service supported by a 10 piece brass band. Do come if you can. It will be a lovely afternoon, so bring a picnic and enjoy it before or after the service in this idyllic spot.

Animals without a caring home, living off waste/scraps and rubbish, will suffer poor health, will not have adequate shelter and will not receive veterinary care for injuries or accidents. Stray cats and kittens are extremely vulnerable, and there are many reported cases where they have been deliberately harmed. ‘Strays’ it’s the true story of a homeless man and a lost cat and how they quickly developed a strong bond, each providing the other with comfort on a journey of thousands of miles across the USA. The book beautifully illustrates just how important our relationships with animals are, no matter what our own situation and how animals can provide each and every one of us with focus, support, companionship and even care. Cats, dogs and horses can provide therapy in structured environments; dogs can be trained to provide medical alerts (Medical Detection dogs) and also physical support dogs allow people to lead fuller lives, such as Guide Dogs for the Blind, Canine Partners for Independence and Hearing Dogs for the Deaf. Having a cat is proven to reduce stress and some cats assist with ‘therapy’ via the organisation https://petsastherapy.org; there is an opportunity for people to apply for their cat to become part of the Pets as Therapy team https://petsastherapy.org/ Cats are incredibly charismatic individuals with personalities as different as each of us but they, like us, require food and shelter and like us (unless you are a student of Bear Grylls or Ray Mears!) will flourish in a safe, home environment. Cats Protection Winchester are a local branch of Cats Protection and offer a second chance for so many cats, working hard to find as many cats as possible a permanent loving home. As with all charities they rely heavily upon the goodwill of supporters and volunteers. To found out more about adopting a cat/kitten, fostering, volunteering, or donating items for re-sale, please contact Cats Protection Winchester (web site and email address below). There are Cats Protection branches all across the UK. For more information, advice, inspiring stories, news and campaigns please see the Cats Protection main web site: https://www.cats.org.uk/ you will also be able to look for cats/kittens available for re-homing in your area just type your post code into the ‘Find A Cat’ search tool; some branches may be happy to rehome cats ‘out of area’ subject to the usual home checks to help find the ‘purrfect’ match! Any support you can offer would make a fantastic difference to the lives of homeless cats and, it is proven, that helping is the key to happiness, so you can have an even Happier 2019! FEATURE

A FROG, TWO FISH AND A FLOCK OF SPARROWS BY CLAIRE THURLOW

T

he cold spell is over, and milder weather brings a swathe of mist to the lane. For animals living outside, sub-zero temperatures are a matter of life and death. For days the pond was frozen over and I feared for its inhabitants.

It’s a small garden pond, less than a metre wide, yet it’s deceptively deep.Tucked between a steep bank and an old brick wall (remains of a long-gone house) this man-made feature looks surprisingly natural. The plastic edges of the liner are camouflaged by clumps of ferns, mossy rocks and tangles of ivy. Like a miniature Scottish loch, the depths are dark and impenetrable. The ice has thawed but the water is still as glass. Peering in, I make out two orange shapes cruising below the surface. The goldfish have survived! And they’re not alone. At the opposite end of the pond, body submerged, but eyes fixed on me, is a large frog. The goldfish rise towards the food flakes, ignoring the frog who is as big as both of them combined. The trio seem to co-exist peacefully enough. Netting has been installed to keep out the heron and nosy foxes, but there is a gap at one edge, an easy exit for the frog to hop out and search for insects among the rocks or nearby woodpile. I leave them to it, as I have work to do.Ten minutes walk away is the little house I’m renovating, and another day of wallpaperstripping beckons. It might be solitary work, but in fact I’m never alone. Arriving at the front gate I’m greeted by exited cheeping and chirruping from hedges on both sides, as well as from a ‘look-out’ perched on the television aerial. Being greeted by a flock of house sparrows is a noisy affair! One darts across my path as I approach the front door, another little brown face peeps out of the guttering.

Once I reach the kitchen, the sparrows have regrouped in the back garden - in the forsythia, the hydrangeas and balancing on the fence - all within easy reach of the bird table. The house has been unoccupied for nearly a year, but the birds soon realised that humans were around again. I provide ‘proper’ bird food, but they prefer investigating what the builders have to offer. A scrap of bacon sandwich, a bit of leftover cake or a crumb of cheese cause a scrum of activity. These fatty treats build insulation, but a bird can only put on so much body weight or flight becomes impossible! When the weather was at its worst, the sparrows huddled together in the hedge, their feathers puffed out to conserve body heat. They can even shiver, contracting different sets of muscles, to stop from freezing to death. Getting enough daily food is vital, and house sparrows’ long association with humans is key to their survival. They are opportunists, with reports of them nesting deep underground in mines, as well as in London’s Underground, and they negotiate automatic doors to access airports and warehouses. But despite this adaptability, this once common bird is in decline, both in cities and in the countryside. Loss of habitat, pollution and predation have all been blamed.Yet in our towns and villages, house sparrows are managing better, drawn to gardens and allotments which offer varied sources of food. It’s a joy to see these endearing little birds, dangling from a washing line or perching on the window sill, and their cheeky antics and noisy chattering certainly get my attention. If the house sparrow is to survive, it needs all the human help it can get.

NOW FELIX KEEP ON WALKING

Kaye Osborne, PGDip, BSC (hons) Registered Nutritional Therapist Gift Vouchers Available Call for a free 20 minute consultation Before ‘Keep calm and carry on,’ there was Felix the Cat. From my mother I inherited the last surviving little plate of a 1920s doll’s tea set. Over the caption “Now Felix keep on walking,” Felix staunchly keeps going despite the frenzy of dogs barking and other cats panicking.

stockists of:

Mind you, Felix looks strapping enough to handle any setback; but the kind of resilience you need to take difficulties in your stride is more to do with size of attitude than physique. If you believe that you have, or can find, the resources you need to handle a situation, it becomes manageable. And every difficulty you deal with increases your ability to rise to the next challenge. Conversely, every upset, shock or pressure that you don’t feel able to cope with will knock your confidence and deplete your energy, until just keeping up with day to day living can become overwhelming. And then any trivial setback tends to swell out of all proportion, while your well-being and self-respect become harder to maintain.

26 The Dean Alresford Hampshire S024 9AZ Tel: 01962 738683 www.studio49alresford.com

But confidence can be learned. It is not a matter of temperament, but a way of thinking. Disheartening thoughts disempower you. They do not prepare you to cope better when difficulties arise, as they inevitably will. Many people mistakenly feel safer dwelling on what could go wrong, than imagining a happy outcome; as if worrying in advance might somehow avert disaster, or as if expecting the worst will save you from being disappointed. But when you lack confidence, you can’t deal assertively with the problems that are always snapping at our heels. Keeping going will bring you through a situation and to another place. It means not letting yourself be daunted or side-tracked by the growling of your own regrets or resentments, or frightened by uncertainties. Confidence means ‘with trust’. This is not the kind of trust that shuts its eyes and crosses its fingers, like the ‘peril-sensitive’ sunglasses in The Hitch-hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy that go black in the presence of danger, so that you can’t see what you don’t want to. It is not the kind of trust that depends for its peace of mind on locks and alarms, belt and braces, insurance schemes and guarantees; or on rosy-tinted wishful thinking, either. What you can trust is the extraordinary capacity we all have to regenerate, change, come up with new possibilities. You can trust that (like everyone else) you will make wrong decisions and be disappointed, ashamed, frustrated, like everyone else; but keep walking, and your view will change as you walk. WELLBEING

ALRESFORD SURGERY NEWS SAME DAY TREATMENT If you are acutely unwell and would like to access same-day treatment please telephone the surgery as soon as you can. The receptionist will take a few details from you in order to help the duty team to prioritise calls and provide the most appropriate care. You will be called back by one of our duty team who will talk to you about the symptoms you are experiencing and will then be able to offer advice on how best to care for yourself, provide a prescription or offer an appropriate appointment. Our system is set up to handle these problems via the telephone in the first instance and allows us to treat many people quickly and appropriately. Unfortunately we are unable to deal effectively with patients who come in person to the surgery in the hope of seeing the duty doctor. LOOKING AFTER YOURSELVES AND YOUR CHILDREN Sore throats. Did you know? Sore throats may last 7-8 days. Antibiotics are rarely needed. 90% are better within a week without an antibiotic. In fact, antibiotics only shorten symptoms (pain) by about half a day! Complications are rare.We would need to give antibiotics to 200 people with sore throat to prevent one ear infection, and to 4000 people to prevent one tonsil abscess (quinsy). In fact, people can develop quinsy even when they are taking antibiotics! The most important self-care is to drink adequate fluids to prevent thirst, and to take medication for good pain relief.Your pharmacist can advise you on this. If antibiotics are taken unnecessarily, it allows bacteria to build up resistance. This means, they’re less likely to work in the future, when they might be essential. They can also cause side effects. We know that, when faced with an unwell child, parents often find it difficult to be sure whether the child needs to see a doctor, or whether they can be managed with sensible self-care at home. It can also be hard to judge how urgently a child might need to be seen. SHOULD THE CHILD WAIT FOR AN APPOINTMENT? SHOULD THE CHILD GO TO A AND E? Parents who are concerned about their children with sore throats can get excellent advice on the Healthier Together website http://www.what0-18. nhs.uk , including a clear section which explains when their child should see a doctor. GOOD FRIDAY & EASTER MONDAY CLOSURE Please make sure you have sufficient supplies of your usual medications to last over the bank holiday period which you can order in a number of ways; • In person at the surgery • By post • By fax (01962 736034) • Via Patient Access (www.patient.co.uk/access) The surgery will be closed on Friday 19 April and Monday 22 April. If you need urgent medical care you can access the Out of Hours service for advice, a face to face appointment or, if it is necessary, a home visit. The number to call is 111. 111 is the NHS non-emergency number. It’s fast, easy and free. COULD YOU GET DIABETES? Last year 30 people in Alresford developed diabetes for the first time. Type 2 Diabetes mostly affects older people, comes on gradually and is treated initially with tablets. Unfortunately in the long term it is responsible for heart attacks, blindness, kidney failure and amputations so it is not a trivial problem. Fortunately it can be prevented. If you have a close family member who has type 2 diabetes you may be at increased risk. Similarly if you are overweight, particularly if it is around your middle, your risk is increased. Diabetes UK has a risk calculator ( https:// riskscore.diabetes.org.uk) which will work all this out for you. If you think you might be at increased risk a simple blood test can be done. Please ask for this at reception or book a full NHS Health Check. If this is raised then you fall into a higher risk group and you could attend the Healthier You Program. The Healthier You Program is the national diabetes prevention program. It is aimed at people at high risk of developing diabetes (as indicated by the blood test). Consisting of a series of short group education sessions it will help you understand the causes of diabetes and what you can do to change things. The main focus is on healthy eating and exercise, and of course this will also reduce your risk of heart disease, stroke and cancer. Even if your blood test is normal you will reduce your future risk of diabetes by aiming for a normal weight and waist size (Men less than 90cm women less than 80cm) Tel: 01962 732345 www.alresfordsurgery.co.uk The Alresford Surgery, Station Road, SO24 9JL

DAVINA'S - FANTASTIC DRESSES IN WARSASH

JACKIE'S COUNTY CORNER FOR APRIL THANK YOU IF YOU TOOK PART IN THE VILLAGE CLEAN UP In March. It is very satisfying to clear an area of litter- but so depressing to see the number of cans and sweet wrappers collected. If you’d like to do more, there are some good ideas for local campaigns on www. KeepBritainTidy.org MANY OF YOU WANT TO SEE MORE ITEMS RECYCLED Less contamination and less items going into your black bins. There is a Government Consultation on how this might be done, and how the process could be standardised across the country. It’s quite a long questionnaire- but easy to access, taking you through 20 points for discussion with many open boxes. Can I ask you to comment please? Deadline 13th May https://consult.defra.gov.uk/environmentalquality/consultation-on-consistency-inhousehold-and-busin/consultation/ A31 MANAGEMENT TO ALLOW HGV'S TO PARK You will have seen the press regarding the A31 management to allow 300 HGV’s to park there in case of BREXIT issues at Portsmouth. Showers, toilets and crossing facilities have been put in place : this may still be there as you read this- or the whole matter might have been resolved. Either way, it is being funded from HCC Council tax as part of the national resilience works. They say that ‘every cloud has a silver lining’: I hope that the changes will allow A31 resurfacing work to be done in the future without overnight closures. For concerned nature lovers: the topsoil rich in cowslips is safely stored for use elsewhere. You can see more on my website www. jackieporter.co.uk, search A31 BARTON FARM PRIMARY SCHOOL HAS A RENEWED PLANNING PERMISSION AND WILL OPEN IN SEPTEMBER 2020 This year’s secondary school places have

been allocated. 92% in first choice , and 98% of children have been given a place in one of the three schools they listed. But for 2 children in every 100, they have not. Primary schools places are allocated and sent to parents this month. Can I give a reminder that children under statutory school age living more than two miles from any school will not be automatically eligible for transport this year for the first time? If you have any problems with either issue, please let me know. ROAD CLOSURES TO INSTALL ELECTRICITY ETC Please be aware that applications to ‘open the road’ (ie: dig it open-and thereby close it to vehicles) are dealt with via a ‘Govt portal’ now so there is very little time leeway. Applications usually have to be made 3 months in advance of need, so if you need this service (for developments etc), please think ahead! https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/ publications/application-consent-carry-outexcavations-or-break-surface-road I am pleased to report that Hampshire County Council have given a second grant of £450,000 to Winchester Hospice, so the works can be put out to tender. I’m sure you’ll agree this is a good use of public money. The Hospice will include “Hospice at Home” services. Returning to waste: there is a proposal to build an incinerator/energy from waste plant for industrial waste at Barton Stacey. As a National Infrastructure Project, it will be managed by the Govt Planning Inspectorate, but HCC will be a consultee. I understand the application will be made late 2019/early 2020. Four county divisions are affected and I am hoping that we will be able to work cross party on a response. See more at https://infrastructure.planninginspectorate. gov.uk/projects/south-east/wheelabratorharewood-waste-to-energy-facility/ Cllr Jackie Porter, 01962 791054, 07973 696 085, Jackie.porter@hants.gov.uk, www. jackieporter.co.uk

HOLIDAY INN WINCHESTER’S NEW ODYSSEY RESTAURANT, BAR AND PIZZERIA TO OPEN IN APRIL The rapid transformation of the four-star Holiday Inn Winchester’s internal public areas is well underway, with the official launch of their new Odyssey Restaurant, Bar and Pizzeria planned for early April. The restaurant is part of a £2.5 million major project to redevelop and refurbish the award-winning hotel, also to include a new Spa opening in July. The hotel’s General Manager Marc Solarz commented: “It is great that the owners of the hotel have the confidence to make such a serious investment in the business. The completed project will provide hotel guests and local residents a much broader offering in the restaurant, with outside dining and a stunning new bar, all now on the upper ground floor level with its own designated entrance.” The redevelopment will also include a new ‘open lobby’ to the upper ground floor - planned for completion in early April. This new contemporary styled space will provide a large lounge including a quiet workplace area and an entertainment media/fun relaxing area, as well as a new hotel reception. There will also be a To Go Café

I also enjoy researching and finding new and inventive ways to combine unexpected combinations of ingredients.” “We have worked hard to create a very balanced menu that will give every visitor a range of choices. COMMUNITY has lived in Alresford for 12 years, spending his entire working life as a civil servant, initially with Customs & Excise and latterly with HMRC, retiring at the end of 2018 after 41 years. He is particularly interested in photography and railways, but insists he is no train spotter. Married to Art Society member Fiona, Colin was very keen on drawing and sketching when he was young, and says “Who knows what retirement will bring?”

NEW RECRUITS FOR ART SOCIETY Alresford Art society has welcomed two new recruits to its committee. Colin Scott-Morton has become the Society’s new Treasurer. He

THE RIVER ITCHEN AT MARTYR WORTHY ~ WILDLIFE & RIVERKEEPING OBSERVED The one kilometre River Itchen at Martyr Worthy is a very special place, famed as one of the finest chalk streams in the world with its shallow, crystal clear waters. It is a wildlife haven for many species of flora and fauna; revealed in exceptional detail in a new, full-colour, 512-page, hardback book, The River Itchen at Martyr Worthy ~ Wildlife & Riverkeeping Observed. George Mann’s observational study spans ten-years, from 2008 to 2018. Over 1500 illustrations reveal the animals, birds, plants, insects, fish, snails and reptiles ~ by day, by night and underwater. Beautiful landscapes and comparative month-by-month photographs chart seasonal changes through the year. Old water meadows are described, supported by contemporary accounts, latter day aerial photography and archeological remains, highlighting the use of the river in support of farming practices. Riverkeeping and river engineering are essential for the maintenance and conservation of a healthy river. There is a detailed insight into what it takes to conserve this Site of Special Scientific Interest, a truly wild and special place.

Robin Moore finally settled in Winchester in 2003 after ‘dragging his family around the world for 15 years’. An Army Officer for 24 years, he saw Cold War service in Germany as well as two years in Hong Kong and two winters Arctic training in Norway. He saw active service in Northern Ireland, the Balkans and Iraq and, since leaving the Army, has filled a number of senior operational management roles. He is a keen cyclist, skier and golfer

Night vision photography tracked an otter family, with unique images of one young cub tackling a metre-long eel. Over 70 species of bird frequent this part of the river, including a visiting black swan. A wide variety of insects and plants populate the banks. The majority of plants have herbal qualities; the riverbank is a veritable medicine chest. George offers fieldcraft advice for others, even for those who say, ‘I have never seen an otter, where can I see one?’ His advice is simple, ‘Go and stand on Martyr Worthy bridge at 6.30~7a.m. and watch for half an hour. Repeat until successful.’ A chapter entitled Art Naturally, with its stunning landscapes, patterns, shapes and reflections, is aimed at the artist, poet and storyteller. A story about a dragon tree, poetry and fun elements offer inspirational encouragement to young people to go out and engage with the natural world around them. For a detailed synopsis see: www.riveritchen.co.uk. Copies are available locally from George Mann (georgemann@gmp.co.uk Tel: 01962 779944), Laurence Oxley Bookshop and Long Barn. and, when fitter and injury-free was a free fall parachutist and endurance runner. “I have painted and drawn all my life,” says Rob, “I am a self-taught watercolour painter, in part because I needed something portable when I was a soldier.” Married to Jenny, they have two children James 26 and Emily 23, and Emily has completed a fine art foundation degree at Bournemouth and is currently doing a BA in illustration at Brighton. “We are delighted to welcome two such high calibre members to our committee,” says Art Society Chairman Sue Gentry “and I very much look forward to working with them. Colin will no doubt keep an iron grip on the finances and Robin will bring much needed discipline to our meetings.” Photograph shows Robin Moore (left) and Colin Scott-Morton

COMMUNITY voucher to Barry Cope, Roger Langridge (from Ropley) who retired in 2018,Vic Prior and Alan Rose who will be retiring within the next few months. All four drivers have given up many years, probably 50 between them and will be greatly missed. Stan Upson then asked everyone to put their hands together to thank Pam for all her hard work and devotion to the Minibus and its passengers. “She is a lovely lady” said Stan.

If anyone has a few hours to spare every month, and would like to join the “happy family of volunteer drivers” Pam would be happy to hear from you, either telephone (01962) 734861 or E.Mail heatherhollow@ btinternet.com.

NEW BOOK FROM LOCAL AUTHOR

Tickets for a raffle were sold on arrival, and drawn at the end of the evening. The funds raised for Minibus running costs was £90., and the prizes were donated by Tesco Express in Alresford and others, to whom the Trust are very grateful.

NEW ALRESFORD TOWN TRUST - CELEBRATING RETIRMENT OF VOLUNTEER DRIVERS On Friday 22nd February 2019 the Town Trust organised by Trustee Pam Stevens held a very successful social gathering at The Swan Hotel to celebrate the retirement of 4 volunteer drivers. The evening started with Pam welcoming all the volunteer drivers and their partners, and also she gave a very warm welcome to Guest of Honour, Stan Upson who is the longest user of the Minibus. Stan remembers using the Minibus when it was driven by Ronald Longley, who was the Head Teacher at Sun Hill Junior School. This must have been in the late 70’s, early 80’s, when the Minibus was a green colour. Also accompanying Stan were Nina Coleman and Irene Truss who are also regular passengers. Pam then went on to mention the financing of the Minibus operation and made special mention to Winchester City Council who have supported the Minibus since she became a Trustee in 2008 by making an annual Grant of £2,000 towards the running costs, and paying £480 for the MIDAS training for new drivers. We also have regular yearly donations from some Parish Councils, i.e. Old Alresford, Ropley, Bishops Sutton, Bramdean & Hinton Ampner as well as Corporate Sponsors Andrew Smith Auctions, Richard Steele Funeral Directors and Alresford Surgery and individual residents who pay yearly towards the costs. The logos on the Minibus also represents the Trust’s appreciation to these organisations for their yearly payment towards the upkeep and running costs. Pam continued by making presentations of a framed Certificate together with a M&S

Gordon Pearson has put pen to paper again and written the biography of the Revd Richard Wake who was born in King’s Somborne in 1831 and became a Methodist reformer and evangelist. From a humble background, he was educated in Stockbridge and Houghton before the family moved to Poole and later to Millbrook where he met Sarah Attwood whom he married. They emigrated to America in 1854 but he returned and toured Hampshire to preach the great opportunities which existed in the new world for hardworking English families.

Pam confirmed that it was her current strategy to continue to run the old Minibus, purchased in 2008, until December 2020. As in previous years the Pigs and Rotary have organised nearly 20 special excursions for elderly residents during 2019, and a new shopping trip to Romsey (morning or afternoon) is being arranged for the coming months, in addition to the regular shopping trips. Anyone who is interested in the Romsey trip please contact Pam.

In 1866 he led 115 followers from Liverpool across the Atlantic where he formed a wagon train and headed west across the great plain to the embryo colony of Palmyra in Nebraska. In 1869, he returned and founded the City of Wakefield in Kansas which was named after him. It remains a thriving city today which celebrates its 150th anniversary in August. Gordon has researched Wake’s early life to produce an entertaining biography of this remarkable but little known man of Hampshire. His book is an A4 sized softback containing 64 pages including 27 illustrations (ISBN 978-0-9515110-8-4) and is sold at its cost price of £8.00 plus £2.00 for postage and packing where necessary. A BAGGY DOG STORY T

he gadget that Lord and Master (LaM) had stuck in her ear registered a whopping 104. She dragged herself off to the bedroom and LaM thoughtfully switched on the TV for her; “Look Sweetings, it’s that depressing musical you like – the one where Wolverine sings.” And so, lying in bed, a little delirious, she’s idly watching the cast of Les Mis skipping out of the screen and reappearing on the duvet, to prance over the ridges made by her legs. During her recent bout of glandular fever, she imagined she saw Cher and Meryl Streep cavorting over the sitting room rug. Here we go again, she thinks. A little later, the water glass is empty on her bedside table and she’s relieved to hear the back door slam. Heralding the return of LaM from his obligatory dog walk, usually her domain, along with most of the domestic tasks, LaM has manfully stepped into the breach caused by her inconvenient dose of the ‘flu. Quite what obscure strain it must be that’s laid her low she can’t imagine, having trotted off to the supermarket pharmacy for their jabs this and every winter, for years. “Darling, please..” she croaks as he explodes into the bedroom, bellowing; “DOG POO! Quite honestly, I think the world’s gone mad! I flicked it with a stick, away from the path and right underneath a patch of brambles that I’m fairly convinced no family will be picnicking under anytime soon. But no! That, apparently, is not good enough! I’m to gather it into a plastic bag, so that it can go to a landfill and take millions of years to break down! I thought that the idea was to cut back on plastics. At least my way, the elements can do their thing – in a few days it’ll be gone.” He took a breath. “Thirsty – please…” feebly she pointed at the bedside table. “Shouting at me, they were. Said they’d got it on their shoes, they did. But it wasn’t our dog’s poo – it must have been some other dog’s poo.” LaM seized the glass and stomped off downstairs to the kitchen, returning with it full to the brim of cold water. She gulped it all down. It was, quite possibly, the most delicious drink of her entire life. He continued as if there’d been no pause; “And on the way back to the car park, I came across a bush festooned with these bags,

bulging with their noxious loads. Like some dystopian Christmas tree. How can that be an improvement on what I did – I ask you?” Even in her sickly state, she thought of the rolls of biodegradable poo bags that she had in various colours, in various coat pockets. Never without them. But she didn’t have the strength to speak on the subject. In a couple of days’ time, she’d be well enough to debate it. Probably tell dear old LaM that his method was very à la Forestry Commission and quite de rigueur at some National Trust properties. But in the meantime she just wanted to put her hot dry cheek against her cool smooth pillow and sleep. Ordinarily a huge fan, she also wished Hugh Jackman would take his troupe and troop off back into the television. Awaking from her nap she found LaM perched on the edge of the bed, fresh glass of water in one hand and two paracetamol in the other. He helped her sit up and a damp flannel he must have placed whilst she slept, fell from her forehead. The dog had also sneaked into the bedroom, sliding from the floor and up onto the bed with remarkable skill, almost defying the laws of physics. Stroking her spaniel’s silky head with one hand, whilst the other was stroked by LaM was both soothing and gratifying by turn. “I’ve ordered your favourite curry. Now, I know that you probably haven’t much appetite, but I read somewhere that spices are extremely good for colds and ‘flu. You should try to eat a little bit when I bring it back. I’ll leave the dog up here as she seems very concerned about you. As am I, Sweetings. Sorry about my rant earlier. I’ve found the poo bags and I’ll make sure that I’m armed with them for the morning walk. You’re not to worry about a thing.” She wasn’t worried and, actually, the thought of a curry didn’t fill her with disgust. But somewhat removed from reality, she slid down her pillows as the dog sighed and snuggled up to her. LaM departed. Jean Valjean et al continued their performance on her bed, only now, she observed with slight detachment, they had tiny poo bags in their little hands.. But the dog was taking no notice of them and neither, in her pleasant delirium she decided, would she. © 2019 Lucia Foster-Found

COMMUNITY have time to say goodbye to the fellow drivers at around 3.30pm. If by this time, you still haven't had enough of the cavalcade driving, we will will be going back to the Hedge End area via country roads at a leisurely pace and you are more than welcome to join us.

ROTARY TOUR OF LEGENDS: SATURDAY 15TH JUNE

From there, we travel to Winchester Cathedral where we have been given permission to enter and display the Tour of Legends to the public, in the grounds directly in front of the Cathedral.

The Rotary Tour of Legends itinerary is now finalised, so if you are interested in having a great day out with fellow class car admirers, this could be for you.The run consists of four journeys of around 30-40 minutes, so not too intense. Leaving from The Alma Public House in Upham, for a light breakfast at Bill Rawles Classic Cars in Alton (our main sponsor) for a tour around their classic showrooms and restoration centre. If you haven't been before, you will be impressed firstly by the scale of the set up, and secondly the incredible work these guys turn out.

After a short stop of around 40 minutes, we continue travelling through Romsey Town Centre, where we hope members of the public will be out to see us pass through on our way to Wellow Golf Club, where we will have lunch overlooking the course. After lunch we will travel through many small villages en-route to our final destination Salisbury Cathedral. Once again, we have been given exceptional permission to enter and display the cars to the public in the grounds directly in front of the Cathedral. Here we will

RENEWED CALLS FOR ASSAULTS ON OFFICERS TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY A thug who walked free from court after repeatedly kicking and punching an officer on the floor before assaulting his colleague has sparked calls for the criminal justice system to end lenient punishments. Last year, PC Paul Headen and PC Oliver Green were called to an address after Mark Watson attacked his mother. The pair made attempts to detain Watson but he resisted, hitting PC Green multiple times before pinning him to the floor, kicking him in the groin and then punching him in the face. He was left with a black eye. PC Headen was also assaulted, but by drawing his Taser he managed to create space between them before making an arrest - but Watson ran away with his handcuffs still attached and was not located for almost a month. PC Headen walked away with minor bruising. Watson of Sarum Hill, Kings Furlong, was charged with two counts of assault by beating, one count of actually bodily harm and escaping lawful custody. On 31 January this year he was sentenced to just six months in prison suspended for 18 months at Winchester Crown Court - despite The Assaults on Emergency Workers (Offences) Act being enshrined in law in November and doubling the maximum sentence for these cowardly and despicable acts from six to 12 months. The officers have received no compensation and are said to feel incredibly let down by the system, whilst the Hampshire Police Federation has considered an appeal, but it appears the threshold will be too high. Our latest welfare survey revealed 20% of Hampshire Constabulary officers who participated in the research suffered one or more injuries that required medical attention as a result of work-related violence in the last year – losing more than 484 days in sickness absence.

CLLR LISA GRIFFITHS - WINCHESTER CITY COUNCILLOR MONTHLY REPORT APRIL 2019

District. And a looming hole in our finances not being addressed by the Conservatives, however the picture presented is the ‘if we do nothing’ scenario. We are not a do nothing administration! Be assured, our Chief Financial Officer would not allow us to put the Council at risk by having no plans on how we are going to address the funding gap. A council-owned estates renovation programme secures income for the Council (and residents) and new employment opportunities – a top priority. What we will not do is to ‘count our chickens before they hatch’ and show an income yet to be realised; completed renovations this year have been successful and tenants secured. It would be easy to save money by cutting services, but instead a reorganisation led to savings of over £2m last year and further possibilities have been identified for year on year savings – showing a responsible attitude and keeping services that residents want and need.

If you have any comments or questions on the content of this report, please do not hesitate to get in touch. And of course, on any matter relating to WCC responsibilities where I will help. An update on running 5k. I’ve done it and doing Winchester Parkrun on Saturdays with 400+ other runners! By mid-March I’ve been running 8k a couple of times a week. Believe me, running continuously for 90 seconds in Week 1 of Couch to 5k was difficult but the encouraging words through the downloadable App means I’ve kept going. Some days it’s really tough, and others I still have energy to run further. Why don’t you amaze yourself? Alresford & Itchen Valley have a wealth of opportunities for exercise and activity, whatever your age. There are also GP referral classes for those with long term heart and lung conditions, and stroke recovery, held at River Park. You can ask your GP to refer you if you find one which suits your condition. Any activity can provide great opportunities to build friendships and make the time pass quickly (and healthily). WCC FINANCES The Conservative Administrations’ budget was agreed on 28 February 2019 – securing a council tax freeze for 2019/20; doorstep glass collection from Autumn 2019; a commitment to build 1000 new council houses over 10 years, plus Extra Care properties; building a new leisure centre at Bar End; the Dean Car Park;, progressing new homes, offices and retail space at Station Approach and Central Winchester, as well as continuing to invest and improve in your existing services. Spending our reserves? Yes, we are spending some but we’ve been saving, knowing we have expenditure coming to invest in our

LOCAL PLAN 2032-36 The Local Plan review includes smaller sites and WCC are currently undertaking some research to see whether windfall sites can show a consistency of supply. If this can be supported, WCC will include windfall sites in the Local Plan when it is updated. LOCAL ECONOMY Two shops in Alresford have been re-let and opened in the past few weeks. The new coffee shop in the old Barclays building is now due to open in June. And, despite the scaremongering (and the rents and rates!), both Winchester and Alresford have a very low rate of empty premises – we are way below the national trend, so keep shopping local and keep us vibrant. IN BRIEF New Leisure Centre: Wilmott Dixon, our construction company, will start to be up the site from 1 March 2019. Due to open early 2021. To take a look around the new centre, go to http://bit.ly/WinchSportCentre Station Approach: outline planning application due for submission March 2019. ALRESFORD ROTARY 10K ROAD RACE AND FUN RUNS 2019

The 12th annual Alresford Rotary 10k Road Race and Children’s Fun Runs will take place on Sunday 16th June. This year’s Alresford 10k is one of the 12 Hampshire Road Race League Races which means that we can expect a higher standard of runners than in previous years. This year we are expecting up to 700 runners from across Hampshire and the surrounding counties. With this additional focus on the event we are determined to put on a great event and still raise a significant sum for Alresford Rotary’s local and international good causes. Locally we support those in need as well as other campaigns such as the Watercress Way Walk development, projects with the local schools and days out for the elderly. Internationally we donate Shelter Boxes for those in need after natural disasters and the eradication of polio globally. For details of what we do please visit our website http:// alresfordrotary.co.uk/. The operational expenses we incur to stage the race are approximately £6,500To help cover these costs we are seeking sponsorship from businesses associated with Alresford and the surrounding area to ensure that the maximum amount raised will go to our deserving charities. THE FOLLOWING SPONSORSHIP PACKAGES ARE AVAILABLE TO YOUR COMPANY • £1500 will fund half of the T-shirt costs and for this we can offer your company logo on the front of shirt along with publicity on our website and all other race material. You would also be welcome to have a presence at Alrebury Park as a main sponsor on the day itself. • £500 dedicated to the prizes would cover the cash awards for the winners and the trophies for the other age categories. Your name or logo could be included on the trophies and your company would be specifically named during the prize giving at the end of the event. If you wish you could have a company representative present the prizes. • £200 will get a smaller logo on the back of the shirt and social media/website publicity. Please contact Jon McKenzie jonathan. mckenzie15@gmail.com to discuss the various sponsorship opportunities available.

ANIMALS HOME & PETS

DENTAL CARE AND ADVANCES IN TREATMENT Exciting news! Cedar Veterinary Group will soon be able to carry out dental radiography at the new practice opening soon in Alresford. This equipment can be used to take detailed x-rays of your pet’s mouth, allowing for a more in-depth diagnosis and treatment plan to be made. Just as for our teeth, our pets’ teeth need to be checked and cleaned. As they are unable to tell us where a tooth hurts (and they are usually more resilient than us!) regular checks are even more important. Advances in veterinary dentistry is bringing animal dental care in line with ours. Read on to learn more… PLAQUE • A mixture of saliva and bacteria • Soft, easy to remove with tooth brushing TARTAR • Mineralisation of plaque • Also known as calculus or scale • Hard, can only be removed with veterinary dental treatment

recession which allows more bacteria to penetrate the gum line and can be painful. A scale and polish can reverse gingivitis (gum inflammation) due to the removal of tartar, however, left untreated this progresses to more serious, irreversible dental disease and teeth extraction is necessary. As well as affecting their general wellbeing, poor dental health can damage other areas of the body such as the liver and heart as bacteria travels in the bloodstream. Approximately 70% of the tooth is the root which is hidden below the gum line. Therefore, radiographs under general anaesthetic are vital in diagnosing the extent of dental diseases, such as FORLs (Feline Odontoclastic Resorptive Lesions) and Periodontitis. Radiography is also useful for small furries such as rabbits, who are prone to dental problems if their diet is unsuitable. Rabbit teeth grow continuously as they have evolved to deal with grazing on grass all day. To be healthy, grass or hay should make up 80% of what our pet rabbits eat. Contrary to popular opinion, gnawing solid chunks of carrot is not the best way to keep their teeth short (or their weight healthy!).

There are various options for home cleaning such as tooth gels, rinses, certain chews and specially shaped dry foods, but the most effective method is tooth brushing. This cleans below the gum line and, if done regularly, can prevent the need for veterinary dental procedures. Plaque forms quickly, even after veterinary treatment, so consistent care is necessary to maintain your animal’s smile. Though brushing may take time to get used to, the benefits are well worth it. Try finding a time of day that suits you, for example before a walk or after dinner. Training will familiarise your pet with being examined and will help them, you and veterinary staff in providing the best treatment. A dental health check at the practice will allow us to gain an idea of any treatment needed. Please speak to a veterinary surgeon if you notice changes in eating habits, bad breath and salivation. It is usually not possible to rule out extractions of teeth until under the anaesthetic - removing the tartar may reveal gum

Dental radiographs can be taken to examine tooth root growth and diseases of the jaw which can lead to ocular discharge. As prey animals, they are less likely than dogs and cats to show pain and hence it is even more important to check their teeth regularly.

ALRESFORD TOWN COUNCIL REPORTS ANNUAL TOWN MEETING The Annual Town Assembly will be held at 7.30pm on Tuesday 26 March at Arlebury Park. This is your opportunity to hear the highlights of the Town Council's year, to ask questions and to meet your current councillors and clerks. We hope to see you there. ELECTIONS, THURSDAY 2 MAY 2019 All 11 places on New Alresford Town Council will be up for election on Thursday 2 May 2019. We hope that the election will involve a mixture of current councillors and new candidates with fresh ideas, enthusiasm and commitment to the town. At the beginning of March, we held an event aimed at encouraging new candidates to put themselves forward for this volunteer role. Whether you were able to attend our event or not, please give some thought to becoming a town councillor at this interesting time in Alresford's history. No special qualifications are needed, just a willingness to identify local matters, think them through and then to see the Council's decisions into effect with the help of our team in the clerks' office. All nominations must be completed and returned to WCC by 4pm on Wednesday 3 April. The clerks will be glad to give any advice, but we suggest you don't leave nominations until the last minute. Alternatively, you can drop your application into

the clerks' office by Friday 29 March and the clerks will deliver them to WCC for you. Polling stations will open from 7am until 10pm on 2 May.You will receive a polling card in early April telling you where your nearest Polling Station is.You can vote in the WCC District election at the same time. The deadline for new postal vote and postal proxy applications and changes to existing ones is 5pm on Monday 15 April. The deadline for new applications to vote by non-postal proxy (other than in emergencies) is 5pm on Wednesday 24 April. Your councillors serve for four years at a time, so we encourage you to vote so you can be satisfied that you are well represented locally. Please check our new website www.newalresford-tc.gov.uk for further information nearer the time of the elections. THE ARLEBURY AT THE ARC We are delighted to announce that The Arlebury Ltd, run by locals Becky Peet and Leigh-Anne Bennett, has taken a lease to run the whole of the first floor of the Alresford Recreation Centre at Arlebury Park. They plan to refurbish the bar and function room ahead of the grand opening which The Arlebury will publicise nearer the time. In their own words: “You can expect to find a

child friendly café during the day, a revamped bar from afternoon/evening and weekends and function room and a programme of events coming over the next few months. The fully refurbished function room is available to hire for any event or meeting.” Pleases remember that The Arlebury's business is separate from the Town Council, so please refer any first floor room bookings and enquiries to bookings@thearlebury.com We wish The Arlebury every success with its new venture and hope the whole community continues its support of the Alresford Recreation Centre. TOWN LITTER PICK DAY A reminder that Saturday 27 April is the annual town litter pick day. Last year, some parts of the town arranged themselves amongst neighbours to tidy up their own areas or favourite local footpath. This proved very successful and a great way to meet neighbours and raise community spirit. If you would like to encourage a group to tidy your street, area or favourite footpath, then please let us know. Litter grabbers, gloves, bags and refreshments will be available from our Arlebury Park offices at 10am. Equipment can also be collected or delivered to you in advance by arrangement.

Please call our Deputy Clerk, Sarah Johnson: deputyclerk@ newalresford-tc.gov.uk or 01962 732079. Join us for as little or as long as you wish and bring your full sacks back to Arlebury Park for us to dispose of and then join us for a coffee and donuts (on us!) any time before 1pm at The Arlebury Café. FLORAL DISPLAYS This year we will add five new flower troughs to the railings in West Street in time for the Parish in Bloom competition which we have entered for the first time. Every year we put 30 floral displays around the town. Through our Up The Pole sponsorship scheme, we invite companies and individuals to help with the cost of the displays at £60 each. All sponsors will be individually acknowledged on our website and in The Forum. BROADBAND Hampshire County Council is rolling out superfast broadband across the region. It will enable internet speeds of 24Mb per second or more – making working from home, online banking and shopping, streaming TV and gaming all a lot easier. Here’s a selection of frequently asked questions especially for you sceptics (you know who you are). 1. When you say ‘carpet’ what do you mean? We mean average size areas, say 10x12ft ish. But we don’t quibble if the areas are a little larger - it’s all done on fairness really. 2. Do you move furniture? Our pricing policy reflects the time it takes to clean working around furniture, rather than moving it. any three carpets That said, we are Have for example, happy to move your three piece suite backwards and forwards cleaning under it and replacing it back into piece position. What we don’t price into the job at these discount prices is and your three moving large pieces of furniture like bookcases, sideboards or wardrobes. Similarly we are not insured upflat-screen for Andover to move electricalsuite items, freshened in particular tvs. Again we apply common sense and fairness to the situation and inevitable we do end up moving some furniture around, even at these discount prices. 3. just £167! Are there any ‘hidden’ extra costs? The prices quoted above are fully-inclusive and are the actual prices you will pay.

MARGOT POWER: PAVEMENT PARKING Pavement Parking. This makes pedestrians walk in the road, makes walking dangerous for those with vision impairments, and if you have a pushchair or a mobility scooter makes it impossible to keep safe. SO WHY DO PEOPLE DO IT? ‘The road’s very narrow here, my wing mirrors may get bashed’, better your wing mirrors than a pushchair. ‘I don’t want to delay the traffic by blocking a lane’ – there is nothing, except a policeman with a speed gun, quite like slowing the traffic as a parked car, so slow the traffic. ‘I couldn’t park any closer to my house’ – how far do you need to walk? Is it worth making it dangerous for others to use the pavements? ‘I’ll only be 5 minutes’ – in that 5 minutes you put other people at risk, do you want to come back to an accident scene? ‘I’m delivering’, so park in the road? And most damningly of all ‘it’s a fast road’ – yes, that’s why we want pedestrians on the pavement and cars on the road. Is it ever acceptable? If the Town Bus is delivering or collecting passengers, and the pavement is wide, and it would block the road completely, we use the pavement. Emergency vehicles? Please park wherever you think best. On which subject - we drive the Town Bus, surely you could as well? Pam Stevens is always after new drivers ‘phone 01962 734861. THE ALRESFORD YOUTH ASSOCIATION

the school. We are now planning to fund a similar project at Ropley School to enhance the facilities the school and the aya clubs share there, we are very excited about that project.”

Jon Hickey feels he has come full circle; he originally trained as a teacher, meeting his wife Jo at teacher training college, and then went on to graduate in ‘Cultural Studies’ and ended up in a career in ‘Business Management’.

The aya understand that while schools have holidays working parents don’t. Recognising the difficulties of childcare during traditional holiday periods aya launched a ‘Holiday Club’.

“Education has always interested me and I now find myself, as Operations Director in a Hampshire school, enjoying a blend of both.” Jon and Jo have three children, as working parents they are acutely aware of the stresses and logistics of childcare. “We were very fortunate in Alresford to find after school care for our children, the Alresford Youth Association, (aya), originally ran a breakfast & after- school club in the old Methodist Chapel a short distance from Sun Hill Infant and Junior schools. For working parents like ourselves it was absolutely crucial in providing a safe and professional care provision for our children”. The success of the clubs meant the Chapel became unfit for purpose and recognising the ‘value add’ of having wrap around provision on its site the clubs moved to Sunhill Infants School. The Chapel continued to be used for other lettings and a youth club. Sadly however the reduced funding and the slow deterioration of the building, conservation costs and the retirement of the core aya Committee meant that the aya was in danger of discontinuing. “I went along to an emergency meeting with the view to asking a few questions and came away as the new Chairperson! That was five years ago now.” Jon remembers. Despite the new aya committee’s best efforts it became increasingly difficult to maintain activities in the old Chapel. Funding was removed for the Youth Club and the other lettings did not support the building costs. So a decision was made to sell the Methodist Chapel which later, after a total transformation, became White Space Alresford. “A portion of the revenue from that sale was used to rejuvenate the Breakfast and After School club at Sun Hill Junior School which had become our new base. We desperately needed better facilities and more space for the growing numbers who were using the clubs- at times we cater for up to sixtyfive children. What we have funded is a completely sustainable bespoke refurbishment that includes a new kitchen so that we can offer hot meals, a multi-space area incorporating a games and creative area plus the refurbishment of two classrooms all of which are used by the school during the day. In addition we have an outside decking area for use in good weather. The space is fantastic and has had a rejuvenating effect for the aya clubs and

“Due to the success of the Breakfast and After School Clubs we felt we could offer more. The facilities at Sunhill Junior School mean we have the ability to open up and provide provision at an important time for working parents. Open at selected times during school holidays which we are hoping to expand. This provision will also be aimed at older ” With the demise of the youth club the aya doesn’t want to exclude support for teenagers. “We are faced with the sharp realization that our young people were changing fast. Although the school clubs are running well at both Sun Hill Junior and Ropley Schools we struggle to attract the senior school children to the aya. The last thing young people want to do is join a youth club when they have social media at their fingertips, whether we like it or not this is the Xbox generation. It is clear we at the aya needed to recognize the rapid lifestyle changes our young people are experiencing and devise ways to reengage with them. It’s a project that requires a great deal of input and outreach. We are considering the idea of developing an aya interactive webpage where young people can engage with local projects and groups or start their own. The Alresford Men’s Shed are working with young people giving them DIY skills – the valuable life skills that some employers say our young people lack. It would be interesting to work with them on a further project perhaps. As an organization and as it’s Chair the aya are more than ready to engage with the people of Alresford and with its’ youth – tell us what you need” There is an opportunity to do just that, all are welcome to attend the aya AGM on April 3rd at 6:00pm Sun Hill Junior School.

HAMPSHIRE MUM:

NOSING AROUND T

he thing is one gets used to bodily failings and uncertainties at my age.You expect a certain degree of wear and tear don’t you? I must say I treat my body in much the same way as I treat my car, I just expect it to run, I rarely put oil in (The Husband would say never) and I don’t lavish polish or valets upon it. So much like an annoying rattle in the car my sinus problem was not to be solved by simply turning the radio up. “How long do you think you’ve had this sinus issue?” my GP asked, tapping away at my nose. “Umm. A good six months I suppose?” “Two years Sandra! I think we’ll refer you to ENT”. Not the local Renault dealership then… And so I found myself at our local Cathedral City’s ENT Department waiting patiently – as only a patient can- in C3, a cupboard sized waiting room, watching two children diligently drawing pictures for their mum.

“Please take a seat for ten minutes and fill in this form.” Back seated in C3, it gradually became apparent that something was occurring. The form filling was easy enough, but my tongue had decided to swell and was lolling around in my mouth. I hoped no one would speak to me as I was sure to be inaudible. Meanwhile, my nose was beginning to take a whole plastacine feel, as if I could happily mold it into another shape altogether – no bad thing as it happens, and probably the nearest I will get to plastic surgery. Even I could deduce that the foul tasting liquid was a mild anesthetic. As I wondered why it had been administered, the nurse called me back. I lay on the couch as instructed, which I found to be very comfy. However, as I settled down and gazed skyward I caught a glimpse of the nurse passing a long needle like implement, attached to what seemed to be meters of fine wire, to the Consultant. “Just going to have a look up your nose.” I sensed a bit of Room 101 creeping in.

Eventually I was ushered into the consulting room and sat down in front of a smartly suited man who simply asked how long had I had my problem- it’s funny that I assumed he was a Consultant as he never actually said- anyway “Oh, the rattle?”, he looked confused, ”sorry, I mean the sinus issue - two years.”

Up went the implement.. and up and up! Who knew I had that many inches between my nose and what felt like my ear! As the Consultant recoiled the fibre and the vicious probe he said, “Ah yes, nasty infection, lets have a look in the other one.” “Must we? More Dyno-Rod for Borrowers.” Not funny apparently.

“And you have had anti biotic and steroid spray?” “Yes, but to no affect”. “Very well, take these tissues - this will not taste very nice”

The result of this further nosey investigation was more nasty nasal spray and antibiotics (coloured a rather fetching shade of dark green, unlike the substance emanating from my nose) and an appointment for a scan. So, more nosing around later then!

Now at this point, on reflection, it may have been nice to have had a little more information, but quick as a flash he sprayed liquid up my nostrils. He was right, it tasted foul.
