JACKIE’S COUNTY CORNER FOR AUGUST What a weather challenge this Summer break has been! So many recent worthy charity events have had to contend with rain and wind. We were lucky enough to have two dry days to set up stalls for Citizens Advice, and then Street Reach at Winchester’s car boot sale over the summer. Charities can apply to Winchester City Council to run the Car Boot Sale, collecting the day’s stall revenue . It is a really good opportunity to advertise your charity as well as making money.
SAY IT WITH…
Flower arranging keeps us in the present moment, so we can enjoy the here and now and therefore it is a very relaxing experience. Say it with… is bringing its floral café to Easton village hall on Tuesday 17th September 10:30 am to 12pm, here you can relax as Zuzi will guide you through making your own floral arrangement. There is no prior experience needed to do this and anyone can take part no matter your age. Zuzi who runs Say it with is very experienced at working with people who live with dementia and she is also trained in horticultural therapy. As well as being guided through making a flower arrangement, you get a hot drink and slice of cake to enjoy too. Zuzi says: “Floral cafes are a great place to relax, socialise and get creative with flowers. I will guide you to make your own flower arrangement which you will personalise and can keep or give to someone special. “ At the moment there are floral cafes running in Old Alresford, Kings worthy, Colden Common and Eastleigh. for processing. One challenge is to get local retailers to stop selling ‘disposable festival kits’. Boomtown want festival goers to take their tents etc home.Thank you for your comments both positive and negative: I have fed these back to the Environment and traffic teams.
School holidays were originally set to allow families to help with the harvest. Now, they are tied up with tradition and broadly Christian holidays. Do you think the dates of school holidays should change? Now the County is only guaranteeing free school transport for children after their fifth birthday, some families in rural communities have been experiencing difficulties getting children to their first days at school. If this has affected you, please contact me.
I have mentioned the Commission 2050 in previous months- as the County Council has been looking into the future to determine which services will be needed as technology and demographics change. The final presentation will be at a televised Council Meeting on the 23rd September, so that residents can see the presentations and debate on the day online.
The weather gave Boomtown a challenge for organisers this year too. When I visited the site with fellow councillors, I saw thousands of happy visitors and talked to operators at the impressive central HQ for the Police, Emergency services, traffic management teams, security, waste collection and recycling and other vital services. The organisers placed huge emphasis on recycling this year and on our official visit, we saw sorting of rubbish onsite

AUTUMN IS THE IDEAL TIME TO RENOVATE YOUR LAWN. LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT WHAT CAN BE DONE;
O
ften lawns take a bit of a beating over the dry, hot summer months and whilst August has been a bit of a wash-out, we did have very high temperatures and very little rain during June and July. Neither of these conditions are much help for lawns. In fact, the wet August weather we have all been experiencing recently is now creating the ideal conditions for your lawn to recover quickly from any renovation work carried out over the next few weeks. Plants need warmth, moisture and good levels of light in order to grow well. Usually all three of these are present over the autumn months, making now the ideal time to improve your lawn So, you might be wondering why your lawn is looking a little worsefor-wear and what can be done about it now. If your lawn is suffering with bare patches or weak grass growth in certain areas, what might be the cause? Understanding the cause of these problems is the first step to correcting them. There is little point in spending time and money treating the symptoms of your poor lawn if the underlying cause has not been addressed. All that will happen is the symptom will return again next year and you’ll have to deal with it all over again. Bare patches and weak growth are often symptoms of compaction where the soil is so solid that it affords the grass plants no real opportunity to grow well. The compacted soil drains poorly due to the lack of air gaps within the structure of the soil itself and the grass roots find it difficult to spread, resulting in stunted growth and weak plants more susceptible to disease, drought and death. Relieve the compaction first by aerating the lawn, and then you can begin to introduce new grass plants by over-seeding. Before you think about over-seeding you may want to consider whether your lawn needs a good raking. Or for larger lawns, mechanical scarification. Not all lawns need it however, but if they do it’s really important to carry this process out before the weather gets too cold and the grass stops growing. Lawns need time to recover from scarification as it is a harsh process. Not only do they need time, but warm, wet weather is essential too. Both scarification and aeration create ideal surface conditions for overseeding. Unlike re-seeding, where the existing vegetation is removed completely and a new seed-bed created for the sowing of a new lawn, over-seeding works with what you already have by adding new grass seeds to your existing lawn and helping to blend areas of weak growth into other areas of your lawn more naturally. It’s also far less labour intensive, uses fewer lawn seeds and is much more economical. Much better than re-turfing too.
Great progress has been made over recent years in the development of new grass varieties that germinate quicker, establish sooner, are lusher and greener and more resistant to drought, diseases and pests. Introducing new grass to an old lawn makes a massive difference. It is however really important to deal with any weeds before reseeding begins. New grass plants are susceptible to the treatments used to kill lawn weeds. Older, existing lawn grasses are robust enough to withstand these treatments. Therefore manage the weed issue first and then get new grass plants growing. Remember that once germination begins your new grass seeds need moisture to survive. They won’t be able to manage times without water until they have established roots. If it doesn’t rain then you need to remember to keep them watered for the first few weeks. Any nutritional issues should also be addressed before over-seeding and autumn lawn renovation works begin. After all, your existing lawn will need all the help it can get to recover and the new seed introduced will be looking for the right nutritional support to help it develop and thrive. Applying the correctly balanced autumn fertiliser is essential to preparing your lawn for the tough winter months ahead. It helps develop the roots and will keep your lawn looking green and healthy throughout the winter without increasing the need for mowing. Finally, autumn is the ideal time to apply treatments for ant’s nests in the lawn which have been a real problem this year. It’s important to deal with these before they become dormant over winter resulting in those unsightly mounds of soil they bring to the surface next spring as the colony increases the size of its underground nest. middle of Alresford and we have waiting lists for nearly all the sections. We have the demand, we have the programmes, we have the equipment – what we really need is a little more adult support! Why not consider volunteering? The leadership team runs on a shared-responsibility basis so that the help we need is not for fixed times or weekly commitments but can be flexible and is based on a team approach to the responsibilities.
Maybe you were a Scout when younger, maybe you would like to do something positive with your spare time, or maybe you like being outdoors, but whatever the motivation, we would love to hear from you to support our sections. And if you have children who might be interested, we have immediately available spaces for 10 to 18-year-olds and a waiting list for those who are younger. The Group would be very keen to talk to anyone who would volunteer to support the Scouts in Alresford either within the sections on in administrative roles. THE AVENUE - A GIFT TO THE TOWN 150 YEARS AGO The Avenue - A gift to the Town in 1869 - “At this Court with the consent of the homage of the Lord of the said Manor by his Stewards doth give and grant unto (the) Bailiff and Burgesses of the Borough and Town of New Alresford, all those pieces and parcels of land called Pound Hill on the Winchester Road extending from Drove Lane on both sides of the road more particularly delineated in the plan hereto annexed and therein coloured green together with the trees thereon standing.” With these words the Reverend Charles Richard, Bishop of Winchester, gave away his title to the land on either side of The Avenue, on 23rd September 1869.
There were strict terms attached to the gift. The land was to be used for the recreation of the inhabitants of the town, “and for no other purpose whatever”. There was an express condition that no building or other erection of any kind was permitted. It couldn’t be used for any ‘offensive, noxious, noisome or noisy purpose’. The grazing of animals was not allowed and its management and usage had to be ratified by the Charity Commissioners.. The Bishop was doing his level best to ensure that the land on both sides of The Avenue. should remain forever exactly as he had known it. TURNPIKE The first Turnpike Act was passed in 1663 but New Alresford had to wait ninety years before another Act of Parliament in 1753 permitted the building of the road between Alton and Winchester. The tow was fortunate to be on the selected route. Its proximity to the bishop’s residence at Bishops Sutton may have been the deciding factor. As road building had to be paid for, traffic paid tolls for the
privilege of using the turnpike. The town’s western tollgate house, Georgian built, still stands on The Avenue. THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE TOWN TRUSTEES TODAY First and foremost is the responsibility, as far as is possible, to keep The Avenue as it was when it was gifted to the tow by the Bishop of Winchester in 1869. The Trustees are responsible for the land on either side of the road but not for the road itself, that is down to the Highway Authority. They are responsible for the land up to, but not including, the flint wall on the north side and for the land up to, but not including, the fences and walls on the south side. What this responsibility involves is mowing the grass, planting the bulbs, maintaining the benches and removing the litter. But most of all it involves managing the magnificent trees. The Trust has recently lost financial support from Local Government for the grass cutting and maintenance of the trees in The Avenue and is looking at ways of covering these costs and maintaining this attractive gateway to the town. As well as business sponsorship residents are invited to become a ‘Friend’ for a minimum subscription of £25 per annum. If you wish to become a ‘Friend of The Avenue’, please complete the Application Form with this leaflet. Wayleaves to cross the land have to be granted to allow underground pipes for water, gas and electricity to be laid and occasionally a new access point is required to and from neighbouring property, such as the footpath to the new car park at Perin’s School. All of these require the permission of the Town Trustees. CELEBRATING 150 YEARS 150 years ago the Bishop of Winchester gave the Avenue to the Town. Join the Town Trust and the Bishop of Winchester in the avenue on Friday September 20th, 2pm -5pm to celebrate the amazing volunteer army that keeps Alresford the lovely town it is. Including: Showcase of the Town's voluntary organisations, Bell tower and ringing, Display of historic vehicles and country crafts, Tea and cake by the WI. Limited parking will be available at Arlebury Park, Perins and the Station. THE AVENUE IS KINDLY SPONSORED BY: Charters Estate Agents, Drew Smith Group, Hellards and Purdie & Swan BECOME A FRIEND OF THE AVENUE Visit www.towntrust.org.uk for more information

COMPASSION, INTEGRITY, AND A QUIET SELFCONFIDENCE St Swithun's School is a renowned independent school for girls set in 45 acres overlooking the Hampshire Downs. It offers excellent teaching, sporting and recreational facilities. The school has a long-standing reputation for academic rigour and success. Girls are prepared for public examinations and higher education in a stimulating environment in which they develop intellectual curiosity, independence of mind and the ability to take responsibility for their own learning. They achieve almost one grade higher at GCSE than their baseline ability would suggest, and approximately half a grade higher at A level. St Swithun’s offers a comprehensive
careers and higher education support service throughout the school years. Its Oxbridge preparation is part of a whole-school academic enrichment programme providing additional challenge and stimulation. St Swithun’s is an ‘appropriately academic’ school, celebrating intellectual curiosity and the life of the mind, but not to the exclusion of all else. Pupils develop individual passions and acquire a range of skills and characteristics including a willingness to take risks, to question and to debate, and to persevere in the face of difficulty. In the words of Samuel Beckett: “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.” Whilst achieving academic excellence, girls also have the opportunity to do ‘something else’. There is an extensive co-curricular programme of over 100 weekly and 50 weekend activities to choose from.
With kindness and tolerance at the heart of its community, St Swithun’s provides a civilised and caring environment in which all girls are valued for their individual gifts. By the time a girl leaves she will be courageous, compassionate, committed and self-confident with a love of learning, a moral compass and a sense of humour. www.stswithuns.com

THE WATERCRESS WAY RECEIVES HUGE FUNDING BOOST FROM ALRESFORD ROTARY LEGACY A significant financial legacy gifted to Alresford Rotary by Bridget Newitt of Alresford on her death in 2017 has resulted in the Watercress Way* receiving its largest ever single donation of £4,500. Mike Newitt, Bridget’s husband, who sadly predeceased her in 1996, was a founder member of Alresford Rotary and the couple were closely associated with the club for many years. Alresford Rotary decided to use the Newitt legacy for specific projects in the local area which are in keeping with the Newitt’s interests in wildlife and the local environment and community. Rotarians President Stephen Pinch, Paul Watters and Founder member Richard Hawkins from Alresford presented the cheque to Watercress Way Trustees Mike Collis, Malcolm Prince, Kim Adams and Chairman Jackie Porter at the Itchen Abbas section of the route on Monday the 12 August. Immediate Past President of Alresford Rotary, Paul Watters said “we felt it essential to use this very generous legacy wisely and in memory of two people who were an integral part of supporting Alresford life and our club. The Watercress Way is a perfect fit with the Newitts who loved nature, birds and walks – the donation from the legacy will fund 10 substantial wooden benches along the route and 10 information points”. Jackie Porter, Chair of Watercress Way Trustees said “’this is the biggest grant we have received to date.We want to provide Access to All and this gift will enable us to install ten more seats along the 26 mile route. The funding will also provide listening posts so walkers can identify birdsong, and hear oral histories. We’d like to say a huge thank you to Alresford Rotary for making this grant. It will help a lot more people enjoy The Watercress Way and understand the creatures that live along it. The Watercress Way trustees host a Dawn Chorus walk every year, and are looking forward to helping more walkers to identify the local birdsong. We’ll remember the Newitts as we start our walk each year”. *The Watercress Way project (a registered charity) aims to create a 26 mile circular trail along old railway lines (for example,The Watercress Line between Alresford and Kings Worthy) and droves to the east and north of Winchester. The route will include sections accessible to all including those less mobile, on pedal cycles and horseback. Sections at Itchen Abbas, Kings Worthy and Sutton Scotney are already opened. The Watercress Way is waymarked for walkers and more information can be found at: www.thewatercressway.org.uk Alresford Rotary was chartered in 1987 and supports numerous local, national and international communities. BBC HISTORY MAGAZINE’S HISTORY WEEKENDS BBC History Magazine’s History Weekend festivals are back this autumn for the seventh year running, with a new venue, and its best line up yet. Set in two idyllic locations across two weekends, the team travels to a new location, in Chester, at Chester Town Hall between 25th and 27th October and then back to the medieval city of Winchester between 1st and 3rd November. Over the course of these two packed weekends, we’ll have 40 diverse and engaging talks, interactive Q&As and book signings
Tracy Borman by Mark Bickerdale
from the world’s leading historians and authors including Michael Wood, Alison Weir, Dan Jones,Tracy Borman and BBC Radio 4’s Jenni Murray. BBC History Magazine’s History Weekend heads to the historic walled city of Chester for the first time from Friday 25th October with a fantastic programme with nearly 30 talks from leading historians and authors at the beautiful Chester Town Hall – a Gothic Revival town hall built in 1865.The Chester line-up includes bestselling author and historian Tracy Borman, who, inspired by her debut novels (The King’s Witch and its sequel,The Devil’s Slave), will take us into the turbulent world of the early Stuart court, where King James I waged a war on witches and Catholics alike.Tudor historian and archaeologist Robert Hutchinson delves into the life of Henry VIII, who towards the end, was a vulnerable king, thwarted in his ambitions. Meanwhile, historian and broadcaster Michael Wood, will discuss how when clearing out his parents’ house two years ago, he found a photograph from 1884 showing a group of eleven Peterloo veterans from Failsworth, his father’s town. It’s the only surviving photo of people from Peterloo. So, who were they? What were their stories? BBC History Magazine’s History Weekend returns to Winchester from Friday 1st to Sunday 3rd November after last year’s hugely successful event. This time round, the venue is the magnificent Guildhall, the Victorian building that sits at the heart of the historic city. Historian Alison Weir will be discussing Anna of Kleve: Queen of Secrets, revealing a charming woman loved by all who knew her – even by the king who rejected her. Historian and broadcaster Lucy Worsley’s illustrated talk takes a tour of the country to see where Jane Austen lived. Dispelling the myth of the cynical lonely spinster, Lucy instead offers us a witty and passionate woman of her time, who refuses to settle for anything less than Mr Darcy. Bestselling author Dan Jones examines the Crusades, in an epic and deeply human history of an enthralling age. David Musgrove, BBC History Magazine Content Director, says: “We’re very excited to have new venues for our annual weekends.Winchester and Chester are both great places to visit for history enthusiasts, all the more so when you can come along to our events and listen to such a fantastic range of speakers. We are delighted that so many great historians and writers have been able to join us once more, and we look forward to what promises to be two more great weekends of history this autumn”. Several guests will be appearing across both weekends, including Suzannah Lipscomb,Tracy Borman, Alison Weir, Michael Wood and Tom Penn. History Fringe also returns this year where, as well as the main lectures series, festival visitors can also enjoy free short sessions guaranteed to keep you occupied and informed between talks.Taking place throughout Saturday and Sunday, the History Weekends have partnered with scholars from the universities of Winchester and Chester who will host these educational taster sessions on a broad range of fascinating topics. See the full line-up for both events, and details of how to buy tickets at www.historyextra.com/evemts or call 0871 620 4021. Subscribers to BBC History Magazine can take advantage of a reduced rate for all ticket options, and there are discounts for visitors buying tickets for both festivals.

ARE YOU CARING FOR SOMEONE VILLAGE AGENT Carers are people who provide unpaid practical or emotional support to a family member, a friend or another person who needs help to manage daily activities. Some people don’t realise they are carers and simply think they are performing their roles as a husband, wife, parent or friend. Caring for someone can get really tough but there is help available. Hampshire County Council provides support for carers, as well as the cared-for person. You can ask for a Carers Assessment which will assess what help the council can offer but they will also tell you about other organisations and services which may be helpful to you. Call them on 0300 555 1386. Carers Together is a local charity offering support to carers.Their Listening Line is open 365 days a year, Mon-Fri 10am-8pm, Sat & Sun 10am-4pm.They offer information, advice, training, support and advocacy.Tel: 08000 323456.

WELLBEING If you have any tests undertaken as a result of a hospital visit these will be followed up by the hospital. A general rule of thumb is that the doctor who orders the tests retains the responsibility for the results.
ALRESFORD SURGERY NEWS Test Results A whole range of tests, including blood tests, swabs, specimens, scans and x-rays, can be used by our doctors to help diagnose and treat medical conditions. Blood samples, swabs and specimens are sent to the hospital laboratories for analysis and we have two courier collections each day, the last is at 3pm. The results of these tests are sent back to us electronically directly into our computer system. Blood tests usually take 48 hours (although some special tests can take longer), swabs and specimens can take between 3 days and 3 weeks to analyse and report and scans and x-rays can take 2-3 weeks. When the results arrive into our computer system they are viewed by a GP. All test results are viewed every day and anything requiring urgent action will be followed up immediately, even if the doctor who ordered the test is not here. All test results will be commented on by a GP. There are various ways for patients to receive their test results: 1. At the time of arranging the test your GP may ask your permission to send the results to you in a personalised text message. 2. Telephone call to reception. Please call after 2.30pm and our receptionists will be able to tell you if your results have been viewed and commented. 3. Patient Access – this is our online service which gives you the facility to book appointments, request repeat prescriptions and view parts of your medical record including test results. Please see our website for more information about Patient Access. 4. Planned follow up with your GP. At the time of arranging your tests the GP may arrange a follow up appointment or telephone call to discuss the next steps. 5. If the results of your test require urgent further action we will get in touch with you by telephone.
Flu Clinics 2019 As you are all aware, the vaccines being administered were changed last year with different vaccines given to under 65 at risk patients and patients aged 65 and over. We have reviewed how we ran our clinics last year with a firm eye on your safety as well as your convenience. We have also been informed that the delivery of the flu vaccine for patients under 65 will be delayed this year, probably until mid-October. This is because the World Health Organisation delayed the decision about which strain should be included in the vaccine which has inevitably lead to a delay in its manufacture. As a result we will again be running the walk-in clinics only for patients aged 65 and over i.e. patients with a date of birth before or on 31st March 1955. However, we will no longer be running the remote clinics at Preston Candover, Makins Court or Ellingham Close. The walk-in clinic dates for patients aged 65 and over (DOB before or on 31st March 1955 ) will be: Wednesday 25th September 1pm-2.30pm Wednesday 2nd October 1pm-2.30pm Wednesday 9th October 1pm-2.30pm For truly housebound patients who are unable to get to the surgery, the Practice Nurse can visit you at home. In order to streamline her visits we are again splitting her home visits into two sessions. Alresford/Cheriton/Beauworth/Bramdean: The morning of Monday 4th October. Candover Valley/Itchen Valley/Medstead/ Bighton/Ropley: The morning of Tuesday 19th October. If you are already being seen by the District Nurse or the Proactive Care Nurse (Zoe Denyer) he/she will be able to give you your flu jab. Please phone the surgery as soon as possible to let us know if you need a home visit. If you are housebound and aged under 65, please let the receptionist know as we may need to make a special arrangement if the vaccine has not yet been delivered. Bookable appointments will be available for patients who are unable to attend the walkin clinics and these will be late evenings and Saturday mornings. Please telephone the surgery after 11.00 am to make your appointment. If you are an eligible at risk
patient aged under 65, please check with the receptionist for up to date information about the delivery before booking your appointment. Walk in patients Please can we remind patients that the Surgery is not a ‘Walk in’ service & you cannot be expected to be seen on the day by a Nurse or Doctor for minor emergencies such as cut fingers & potentially broken limbs. We do not have X-Ray facilities at the Surgery. If you do need to see us on the day, please call before attending the Surgery, so we can best advice you if you can be seen or the best action to take. Our nearest ‘walk in centre’ is at the Petersfield Minor Injuries Unit (01730 263 221) 8am - 6pm every day (last admission is 5:45pm) **X-ray available 9am-1pm Monday-Friday, not weekends or Bank Holidays. They can help you if your problem is not serious or life threatening. They have teams of highly skilled nurse practitioners who can offer treatment, advice and information and there's no need to make an appointment; just turn up during opening hours. When should I go to an MIU? ALRESFORD HEARING STUDIO Ear Wax Ear wax is not actually a bad thing, in fact it is a protection mechanism for the ear canal. The issue only occurs when there is too much. As the ear wax builds up, it blocks the canal causing some issues with hearing. If the ear wax becomes impacted against the ear drum, it can even be painful. Typically, the first time many realise they have a problem is when they have a shower or get out of a swimming pool. Suddenly, they can’t hear out of one or both ears. This is because ear wax is like a sponge, it soaks up the water and expands within the ear canal, completely blocking it. Do you suffer from any of these symptoms? • A feeling of fullness in the ear • The sensation of hearing everything muffled • Mild tinnitus (A Ringing In the ears) • Sudden hearing loss after swimming or showering If any of these symptoms sound familiar then you could have excess ear wax blocking your ear canal.
Business is an independent provider of hearing care solutions owned and operated as a family enterprise by Samuel, Helen & Jodie Longman. Sam is a qualified hearing aid audiologist authorised to practise by the Health care professions council. Prior to establishing this new venture Sam was working for a well-known national hearing company managing one of the companies busiest branches at Ferndown in Dorset, whilst also supporting customers across Hampshire and Dorset through home visits. Helen has been involved in the hearing care industry for many years ultimately responsible for the smooth running of 20 branches for a national chain across the south of England whilst Jodie also has significant experience in customer facing roles and is renowned for delivering exceptional customer service. Sam’s aspiration has always been to open his own Hearing Studio as he passionately believes in delivering a more personal service to customers.
How ear wax build-up occurs Under normal circumstances wax in the ears is totally normal; as we said, we need a little of it to maintain a healthy ear. Wax is produced just inside the entrance to the ear canal. It lubricates the skin and helps prevent dust and air borne bacteria from entering. A normal ear canal has a self-cleaning mechanism, where the small hairs in the canal encourage the wax and shredded skin towards the canal entrance. If there is no hair there or the ear canal is narrow or an unusual shape it is sometimes impeded, resulting in a build-up of wax that may need removing.
After reviewing multiple sites it transpired that one of Sam’s existing customers had a site available and after some discussion Sam & Helen successfully secured premises at 42 West Street in Alresford, which they feel is “in a perfect location to serve the community’’ by offering a fully immersive, friendly and comfortable experience to address all hearing healthcare needs”. Sam will also offer home appointments, outside clinics and audiology education through community & sports clubs by prior arrangement. Sam explains that the company’s mission is “to provide the highest standards of hearing care and the latest technology to the local community, whilst still offering a professional and personal service that is second to none” The Alresford Hearing Studio team will achieve this by offering truly independent advice to each customer on hearing aid provision, wax removal, nosie protection, tinnitus management and all other audiology needs to enhance quality of life.
About the Alresford Hearing Studio We are delighted to announce that the Alresford Hearing Studio opened to serve the local community in August 2019. The

FOOD & DRINK REVEIW
DASHI A CULINARY EXPERIENCE I was delightfully surprised to savour such a symphony of flavours – tantalising the taste-buds with new sensations. The delicacy of flavours and textures complemented each other perfectly. Even what appeared to be the simplest of small plates, a Wakame salad (seaweed drizzled in Yuzu-Ponzu sauce and Shiso, a plant leaf from the mint family), had multiple levels of taste. I moved on to try the Tori Kara-Age (chicken marinated in soy and then deep fried) which was light, with not a trace of oil to be seen. Then there was Kimchi; a pickled spicy cabbage made in house by Miff ’s team. I ate this alongside the other dishes and it provided a pleasant kick of heat, whilst not overpowering the subtle tastes coming from everything else.
Alresford welcomes adds a new dimension to eating out with the opening of Japanese restaurant, Dashi A few weeks after the opening of Dashi, a new Japanese restaurant in Alresford, I was invited along by owner Miff Kayum to come and sample their traditional and modern Japanese cuisine. This would be a culinary adventure for me, as I have little prior knowledge of Japanese food, other than poorquality supermarket sushi. Miff asked if I wanted to choose from the menu or let him pick a few dishes. Being a complete novice of the cuisine, I opted to let Miff do the selection, and what an experience it was! I was presented with a small banquet of delicacies on a variety of different plates - so many that there was barely a space available on the table. It was clear from Miff that he had such passion for the food, and his knowledge of the ingredients and techniques was second to none. For me, the highlights were the Sashimi, Tempura, Sushi, and Kimchi, but there were just too many beautiful tastes to cover in my review.
Finally, we were presented with ‘Yellow Tail Nimono’ by the chef; a Japanese sea fish steeped in Asparagus, Daikon, Soy, Dashi and Mirin.Wow! I could not help but be overwhelmed by the care, presentation and preparation that had been put into this dish. The ingredients of all Dashi’s food are completely fresh and sourced from unique suppliers around the world – local where possible such as the Winchester Roll – but mostly very specialist with years of experience in Japanese cuisine. Overall, I found this voyage of discovery a pure delight. I have discovered a new cuisine that was light to eat, of the purest quality, healthy, and above all bursting with unique, fresh flavours. I have only just begun my exploration but I plan to work my way through their comprehensive menu, and it appears Miff is already considering introducing more plates in the not too distant future. I can't wait to return. Editor - Forum Publications OPENING HOURS Tue 6-10pm & Wed to Sun 12-2pm and 6-10pm DASHI JAPANESE 21 Broad Street, Alresford, SO24 9AR www.dashijapanese.co.uk T: 01962 738738

If you already sing in a large choir, maybe you would prefer something a bit smaller. The Itchen Valley Choir is based in Itchen Abbas, a ten minute drive from Alresford. As a small choir, we can offer you individual attention should you need it and also the opportunity to perform as a soloist in its annual winter concert. Alternatively, if you’ve never sung before, this is your opportunity to learn whilst amongst other seasoned performers. There’s no audition and you can pick things up at your own pace whilst we rehearse alongside you.
is where you can help.
Every summer, the Itchen Valley Choir combines with other local groups to perform in either Winchester Cathedral or Romsey Abbey. Next summer, in May 2020, the choir will be part of the Winchester and County Music Festival’s production of Verdi’s Requiem in the cathedral. If any of this interests you, please come along to our first rehearsal on Wednesday 4th September at 7:45 pm in Itchen Abbas Village Hall. You will receive a warm welcome. LEFTOVER FOREIGN CURRENCY APPEAL IN AID OF RAISE ST PETER
For this challenge they will be running more than a marathon every day over five days whilst carrying all their own food/medical supplies and equipment for camping (8-10kgs) and at an altitude regularly above 2000m. For the past 25 years Save the Rhino has worked tirelessly in the constant struggle to try and protect the last remaining wild rhino species across the planet and it is a battle which needs our support more than ever. In practical terms any money you give will not only go towards things like binoculars, GPS, hydration packs, tents and sleeping bags for the rangers but also towards things like hot showers at the end of a hard day’s assignment, somewhere to charge their phones to call home and life insurance for their families. Mel and Neil really appreciate your support in whatever form it takes. See their fundraising page at virginmoneygiving.com/Team/ KinderKenyaUltra
In June 2014, the beautiful 800 year old village church of Ropley, Hampshire, was destroyed by fire. Rebuilding is now underway: A huge amount of work has gone into making sure the rebuilt St Peter’s will be fit for the 21st century and another 800 years. St Peter’s Church will, once again, be the centre of Ropley’s village community – a space for everyone to enjoy and use, not just those who worship there. St. Peter’s will provide a wonderful venue for christenings, weddings and funerals as well as a place for the Village to gather on festivals such as Christmas, Remembrance Day and Easter. The space created will complement other village facilities and will be widely used by the village school, social clubs, concerts and meetings seven days a week, not only an hour on Sundays. The community is working hard to raise the estimated £500,000 shortfall in funds, and is grateful for all additional contributions to help realise the goal. Do you have any leftover currency you can donate? Georgie Nicoll is collecting current and obsolete notes and coins. All monies go towards the rebuild of St Peter's Church, Ropley after it was largely destroyed by fire in 2014. Collection boxes are at Oakleaf Stationery, Alresford and Ropley Village Shop. Thank you for any and all donations.

BOOMTOWN THE AFTERMATH
The residents live here, the revellers come, they throw away, then go away. It happened last year and every year, only worse each time. Properly managed this state of affairs would not be permitted. At the same time as the Boomtown Festival, The Cowes Week International Sailing Regatta was silently taking place in the waters below Cheesefoot Head hill. By way of comparison at sea it has long been illegal to jetson goods, discharge waste and ditch gash. The penalties are both international and draconian. The aim is
ages. Not only the past but the future is on show – the open greener houses give people a chance to find out how to save energy and Alastair Stewart is discussing the impact of new technology on news coverage. It is amazing that such a programme can be put together by a team of volunteers and it is even more of a triumph that it can all be free, thanks to the lead sponsor Winchester College and many others. However, donations will be welcomed and there is one fundraising event on Thursday 12th Sept. when Martin Biddle will be explaining Why did the Anglo-Saxons build a church in the middle of a ruined Roman city? at the Discovery Centre, tickets for this are £14. Some of the events are bookable in advance from the website, a few highlights are listed
simple: to protect the environment and all that use it, live on it and depend upon it. It is also an age old custom, a legacy from the days of sail, for a prudent mariner to reef sail and either slope, frap or furl awnings well before the wind gets up in order to save both life and property. Whether you love the Boomtown Festival or loathe it, or are merely ambivalent, how disappointing the same courtesies to residents and environmental commonsense is not enforced ashore in the Southdowns National Park? David Templeman

ROYAL BRITISH LEGION POPPY APPEAL Every year Alresford takes part in the RBL Poppy Appeal. Shops, schools, the Library, churches, the Town Council and local clubs all contribute and we have a busy week collecting in the town. Members of the Royal Naval Association, the Royal Air Force Association and a large team of local volunteers take shifts of 2 hours to collect in Broad Street and West Street for the RBL funds. It is a most rewarding time meeting so many different people who have stories to share of themselves or their families. If you would be interested in helping with the street collections in the week commencing Monday November 4th 2019 then do please get in touch with Sue Cox on 01962 732043 or at: suealex13@gmail.com I will be delighted to hear from you and be very pleased to welcome you to our great team.

RIVER HEALTH Our local rivers - Itchen,Test and Meon, are just three of the seventeen chalk streams that flow into the Solent according to a WWF healthcheck study of Britain's chalk streams in 2014*. The report found that of the 224 chalk streams in the UK only 5% were adequately protected - fragile ecosystems at risk from both pollution and abstraction. The Itchen was singled out as one example where conservation targets were not being met. Why is this still news? Two recent incidents highlight why the risk remains five years on: POLLUTION In June the BBC Countryfile ran a piece on the quality of the river Itchen and found that while the Environment Agency (EA) monitors water quality it fails to address key indicators of river health. The EA admitted to measuring only those pollutants notified by those discharging into the river. This is not an exhaustive list of possible contaminants and cynics call reliance on disclosure akin to 'marking their own homework' - less vigorous policing than you might expect from a regulator.Viewers discovered that former watercress beds, now
owned by a salad packing company, are used to wash imported produce thus increasing the risk of foreign micro-organisms entering the chalk stream. The Environment Agency did not accept this as a potential danger worth monitoring. ABSTRACTION In July the water company Southern Water admitted to having falsified water quality data over a seven year period and was fined by Ofwat. Why did the regulator not pick this up sooner? Presumably, like the Environment Agency, it relied on evidence supplied by those over whom it has oversight and failed to carry out checks using its own staff. While Southern is now under the spotlight for waste water processing, we should not forget that it is a major abstractor of water from chalk streams in order to supply households and businesses in its region. Requests are increasing with consumer demand. Does EA question requests for abstraction provided by the water company, or does it carry out independent rigorous impact assessments on acquifer depletion? To conclude, I would like to believe that our chalk streams are protected by regulators like the Environment Agency and Ofwat, but I am not certain this faith is well placed. Do our regulators have sufficient funds or must they like the WWF seek sponsors like Coca Cola with whom to fund research and thus offer the opportunity of 'greenwash' to commercial operators. it is also worth looking at the ownership of Southern Water to see that customers probably are less important than shareholders! Our streams are delicate ecosystems and need protection now more than ever. * WWF report on Chalk Streams - https://bit.ly/2YNilHW Written by Garry Honey, a local resident and risk consultant who has a passion for chalk stream protection. With a decent spell of lovely summer weather, it’s a great time to think about new garden doors. Ideal Window Solutions offer a great choice, whether you want bi-folding doors, French Doors or Patio Doors, in a choice of materials, PVCu, Timber, Aluminium, Aluminium Clad/Timber, and even Timber Alternative. A product to suit all situations and importantly all budgets! As well as fabulous Garden Doors, nothing improves the look of your house and says so much about you as the owner, than the entrance. It’s the first thing visitors see and is a great way of styling and putting a stamp on your home. With traditional and contemporary designs in a range of materials you can be as individual as you want introducing both colour and glass to make that all important statement. When it is hot as it has been recently, some conservatory owners may not be enjoying their garden room as much as they would like to. All to often we are told the building is too cold in winter and too hot in summer. As with many industries a requirement to use less energy generally, has driven product innovation and improvements. This is very true of the fenestration market, which has been at the forefront of energy saving products for new build homes and refurbishment projects. Including of course the hundreds of thousands of conservatories that have been installed around the country. Those improvements now mean that we are very capable of changing the frames and roof of an existing building without impacting on the walls and foundations and providing a comfortable space you can use all year round whatever the season! That very same technology, is now used in all the windows and doors we install, offering both energy efficiency and great aesthetics. The choice is literally huge, from traditional sash windows, to ultra-modern large glass expanses, in a range of materials and importantly prices, something for everyone and every budget. We are so confident in the value we offer we won’t be beaten on price or service and will match any genuine quote for like for like product. THERE'S A RAT IN THE KITCHEN (WHAT AM I GONNA DO..)

ayers pellets. Check. Mite powder. Check. Feeder, drinker, corn. Check, check, check. Or maybe, looking at the prices, that should be cheque, cheque, cheque.. Pushing around the trolley, she pushed aside the thought of the mounting cost and daydreamed of golden-yolked scotch eggs, smoked salmon scrambled eggs and eggs poached to bouncy, runny perfection with griddled asparagus. Salivating, she trundled off to the checkout. The run and ark were being delivered the next day (big cheque, monster cheque) and the day after that they were to collect their flock. And they weren’t going cheap either.
and was presented with a rat. It was on the kitchen work surface, closely investigating the pasta maker with curious paws and twitching whiskered nose. Until she screamed and dropped the spirit vinegar, that is.
The children were excited, she was excited. Her husband The Accountant, not so much. His childhood memories of hen husbandry largely involved being chased by the bad-tempered cockerel so admired by his mother. Although, when the bird outlived his usefulness, the coqau-vin served up by his pragmatic mama had apparently been unforgettable and particularly delicious. Contrary to popular belief, revenge was a dish best eaten hot, it seemed.
In the event, she didn’t have to say anything. Gazing out of the window, drinking his early morning coffee,The Accountant spotted the rat on the bird table. He all but trampled her in his rush to the study and she nearly dropped the pasta maker she was retrieving from the dishwasher.
Later, over supper, the family were deep in discussion. “Shouldn’t we name them when we get them? I mean, the names we choose now might not suit them.” Daughter hadn’t fully grasped the notion that the chickens, all being the same breed, would be practically identical. “Mine’s Thor.” Son was Marvel obsessed – either he hadn’t twigged or, more likely, didn’t really care that the chickens would all be girls. “Am I allowed to choose one?” The Accountant suddenly appeared mildly interested. Surprised, she shrugged “Of course darling.” “Margot.” He seemed very decided. “Durrell?” She’d been watching the series. “Robbie.” He sighed – he’d been watching something else, apparently. Moving on, she said “Well I can’t decide between Boudicca and Emmeline.” Perhaps Daughter had a point after all and she would wait to see which name suited her chicken best. Some weeks later, Margot,Thor, Scarlet and Boudicca (she pecked the others) had settled in. The family were egg-bound and she was quite relieved that Thor and Boudicca were broody and stopped laying. After announcing that he was very ‘over’ eggs in any disguise (and there had been many),The Accountant found the receipt for the state-of-the-art Ark. “With the initial capital investment of equipment and on-going expenses, be dead long before we recoup the costs in eggs” he remarked, dourly. “We’ll buy more chickens when these die.” Honestly, what a doom-monger. “No. Us. We’ll have grown old and died.” He explained in a voice dripping with sarcasm. Ah. Well yes, it had been the top of the range habitat and eye-wateringly expensive… Whilst pickling another jar of eggs the following morning and wondering how to resurrect his feeble enthusiasm for her feathered flock, she turned
The rat scuttled off to whence it came. Her country-wise friends spoke with one voice; ‘when you’ve got chickens, you’ve got rats. Everyone knows that’. But not her. And what to do? Not poison. She shuddered. Of a live-and-let-live disposition, she was conflicted. Also, a bit loath to tell The Accountant that the dearest eggs on earth came with free vermin. Albeit vermin with a penchant for kitchenalia.
Moments later he returned with an air rifle she’d forgotten he had - and a childlike look of glee. What happened between bookkeeper and rodent, she preferred not to know, but a notable lack of celebration indicated neither were harmed in the skirmish. Retreating to an oasis of cookery books and instruction manuals, she used her lovely fresh eggs and her long-ignored pasta machine to make batch after batch of lovely fresh pasta... Sheets for lasagne and ravioli, ribbons for stroganoff and goulash, spaghetti for bolognese, vongole.. Some she dried on the clothes airer, some she froze. Spaghetti carbonara was on the menu that evening. The Accountant and children pronounced dinner to be delicious, before retreating to other rooms. When her husband emerged from his study to join her on the sofa and kiss her, she caught a manly and not unpleasant whiff of gun oil. He was carrying his newly rediscovered air rifle and smiling “That fantastic meal reminded me of our honeymoon in Italy and I’m so glad you’re finally using that pasta gadget you badgered me for Christmas – when was that – 3 years ago? Oh – by the way, I’ve ordered some targets, in case they arrive and you wondered what they were. What are we watching?” “The Durrells on catch-up, but I did notice that Wolf of Wall Street is on Freeview if you’d rather?” she glanced at him sideways – the other Margot was in that one. “Keep the Durrells on - you like it and I read it at school. Anyway I was thinking – what about Corfu for a holiday?” He rubbed the gun’s barrel with an oily cloth and was in chirpy mood, so she felt it best not to mention the issue of leaving the chickens. “Of course, we’ll have to find someone responsible to look after the hens properly whilst we’re away.” He added cheerily. Poultry problem? Between them, she and the rat might just have cracked it.

Here’s a selection of frequently asked questions especially for you sceptics (you know who you are). 1. When you say ‘carpet’ what do you mean? We mean average size areas, say 10x12ft ish. But we don’t quibble if the areas are a little larger - it’s all done on fairness really. 2. Do you move furniture? Our pricing policy reflects the time it takes to clean working around furniture, rather than moving it. any three carpets That said, we are Have for example, happy to move your three piece suite backwards and forwards cleaning under it and replacing it back into piece position. What we don’t price into the job at these discount prices is and your three moving large pieces of furniture like bookcases, sideboards or wardrobes. Similarly we are not insured upflat-screen for to move electricalsuite items, freshened in particular tvs. Again we apply common sense and fairness to the situation and inevitable we do end up moving some furniture around, even at these discount prices. 3. just £167! COMMUNITY
NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH GET INVOLVED Neighbourhood Watch is a voluntary network of schemes where neighbours come together, along with the police and local partners, to build safe and friendly communities. There has been an active scheme in this area for over twenty five years, but we need volunteer Co-ordinators and Committee members to help us achieve our aims. Please visit our website at adnw.org.uk to view information about our organisation. Being a member of a watch scheme is a two way process. We will provide you with crime alert messages about incidents which have occurred in your area and, in exchange, we would like you to report suspicious persons, vehicles or activity. Before almost every crime there is usually some suspicious activity. Therefore, it is vital that you help us, to help you. Hampshire Alert is a free service which will alert you when a crime or suspicious incident occurs, to allow you to review your own security measures and better protect yourself, your property and your neighbours. The messages may also contain useful crime prevention advice, scam or cyber crime information, appeals for information or good news stories.
CITIZENS ADVICE WINCHESTER Lesley Rose, Advice Services Manager for Citizens Advice Winchester District, advises on how to protect your family from scams. I’m having problems with a builder I employed to build an extension to our house. The foundations are laid, and he’s knocked through the back wall - the back of our house is now a tarpaulin sheet. We paid an initial deposit upfront, and then two further amounts in cash for materials. He’s now asked for more money - but I’d like to see more work done first. We had a bit of a row, and he hasn’t turned up for the last two days. What should I do next? There are various things you can do,The Citizens Advice consumer service (03454 04 05 06) is a good first port of call. If you think your relationship with the builder can be salvaged and you’d like him to finish the work, you can try to sit down with him and agree - in writing - a schedule of works and payments you’re both happy with. This written contract, if you don’t have one already, should cover exactly what you’re paying for and everything you’ve agreed on, like timings, payments, who will pay for materials and subcontractors. If you pay any future instalments by credit card rather than cash you’ll also benefit from extra protection from the card provider. It’s a good idea to take photos as the work progresses and keep copies of your communications and any receipts. If you feel the situation with that trader can’t continue you can complain in writing to him or his company and ask for some money back. If you believe the work is substandard you can report problems to Trading Standards via the Citizens Advice consumer service. If he’s a member of a trade association they also might be able to help.
Here is a link to the Hampshire Constabulary website giving news of recent incidents across the county- http://news.hampshire.police.uk/ Here you will find items distributed using the Neighbourhood Alert system-https://www.hampshirealert.co.uk and here is where you can sign up to receive your own Alerts direct- https://member-registration. neighbourhoodalert.co.uk/134/Join Alresford and District Neighbourhood Watch’s AGM will be held, as usual, at the Alresford Golf Club on 8th October 2019. Please make a note in your diaries. This year there will be a guest speaker on the subject of ‘Crimestoppers’ and members of the committee will be there and in the bar afterwards to answer any questions or receive details of new volunteers. Everyone is welcome so please make an effort to come and meet us. If that doesn’t work, look for an approved alternative dispute resolution (ADR) scheme this is an independent third party who can help you to reach a compromise. The trader may already be a member of a scheme. If not, they should provide you with the name of a certified scheme and say if they are willing to use it.

EDUCATION COMMUNITY had a shortage of staff, as soon as the 2020 arrangements are in place Enforcement will be recruiting and we should see improvements in Enforcement.
MARGOT POWER: WINCHESTER CITY COUNCILLORS REPORT On street Parking. I am receiving many questions regarding on street parking and what we can do. The mini survey I used when this was first mooted showed that residents shared my concerns about the effect on every day shops. We have to accept that in the face of caps on Council Tax increases, inflation, a decline in central Government funding and increasing needs, Hampshire County Council needs to seek income from every asset they have. Highways are one of those assets, and an asset that is quite pricey to maintain. All District Council in Hampshire have been asked if they wish to continue to manage the on-street parking from early 2020 on the understanding that profits are to be made and shared with the County Council. We are intending that Winchester Council will do so, firstly because residents and visitors are the users of on street parking, and those of us that have experienced private parking companies would not want to inflict that an anybody; secondly because we have a better understanding of the very local difficulties for both residents and employers around parking, and the impact that can have on lives and incomes; thirdly, we have experienced enforcement teams that have to be in town anyway to manage off street parking, it makes sense to optimise their time by managing both on and off street marking. Due to the uncertainty regarding parking enforcement we have not been recruiting to this team recently and have suffered
to pay for essential services, not only road maintenance but care of the vulnerable. My priorities would be different from Hampshire’s, but we have to what we can with where we are.
As an aside, the lease on the Alresford Station Car Park expires at the end of 2019, negotiations are in hand to extend that lease so that Winchester Council can continue to manage those spaces. We need agree the long-promised Parking strategy for Alresford that takes us forward for 20 years and all the current challenges have to be discussed. I see no prospect of public transport returning to the heydays of the 1950’s so we find that working adults have immense difficulties without a car, let us accept that and move on, if proven wrong I shall be delighted. There are many issues to be resolved, and opportunities. We would like short term free parking outside shops to be maintained with effective enforcement to ensure turnover of spaces. In practice this will need both funding and possibly some investment in equipment. Historically there have been two significant objections to this – more, and ugly street furniture, and ‘as soon as shoppers see a machine, they will drive on through to Sainsbury’s or Tesco’s’. On the first point, we have timed ticket machines in Winchester, although not quite Heritage, they are sympathetic; on the second, I’d love to see a better way of making Enforcement more efficient and cost effective, and the Parking team at Winchester are up to date on the technology available. The requests for Resident parking permits have been continual ever since Enforcement became active. We see that blanket resident parking zones just move the problem further from the town centre. That would help nobody. As part of the strategy we will have to consider if small areas restricted to one car per household, and only for those with no prospect of providing one off street parking space could be set aside for resident parking. This is an opportunity to allow more of us to run electric cars. Charging leads crossing pavements are not an acceptable method but if we can manage to turnover spaces for charging from the street light network ownership becomes possible for those with no off-street parking. Alresford Parking is not just an Alresford problem. The residents and businesses from villages all use Alresford as well, and are essential to the economic viability of the Town Centre. When we do start work on this please would all parishes engage with the process, and encourage residents to do so as well. This is not ‘another tax on motorists’. Hampshire need to make some money
Junction 9 on M3 The feedback I am getting agrees that the new proposals are an enormous improvement in terms of road safety, air quality, and noise pollution but there are still concerns about the safety of those travelling from Winnall to the Itchen Valley. I spoke to the team early in August and the majority of objections have been on that matter. They have a variety of solutions they are considering including extending the crossover length to closer to 1 km, and reducing the speed limit to 50 mph with average speed cameras. Some ANPR around there may help with the rural crime as well. Green Waste Bags v. Green Waste bins. Following the windy weather several green bags have gone missing, and they can be a danger to traffic. I’ve been asked why we can’t have bins instead. The trouble is that with the bags the lorries carry slave bins to empty the sacks into, so we would have to be all bins across Winchester. Given the size of some gardens that would create a storage issue., and those areas that do use bins seem to have a chargeable green waste service. However, residents without gardens are subsidising those with gardens. Hydration and Water Bottle refill. The water fountain has been installed in Abbey gardens in Winchester would we like something a little more modest? And with a dog bowl, of course. Planned Roadworks are still coming as a surprise to some of us. Please look at https:// roadworks.org/ You need to click on the downward arrow top right to get advance warning. Next Councillor Surgery – Friday 6th September, 0930-1045, Alresford Community Centre, by kind permission of the trustees.
