Testimonial “We had just moved and wanted to update and bring colour and a contemporary feel into our existing kitchen but wanted to avoid the large Corporate Companies. We found the answer in Happy Kitchens when Ben brought his showroom to us, and the experience of choosing units and colours turned out to be an exciting one, rather than daunting and disappointing. When it came to installation, the team of fitters including Martin, James and Mitch were spot-on with their time keeping, efficiency and workmanship. We were consulted where decisions mattered and nothing seemed too much trouble. We are both thrilled with our kitchen and can’t believe the transformation. Post customer service is as important and they can’t be faulted. They even returned to check all the units a week later for any ‘tweaks’. A happy team, led by Ben and we would 100% recommend them. They deserve to do well.” Thank you” – Jane Wareham

Winter Wonderland at F
Christmas Begins at Funland! Hayling Winter Wonderland is back at Funland, Hayling Island and this year it’s bigger and better than ever! The elves at Funland have been busy creating a spectacular wonderland experience and we invite you to come along. To start your journey you will be met by Santa’s elves, who will take you on your visit to Santa, with a breath-taking walk through Wonderland, where you will meet Santa Claus himself and the kids will receive an early Christmas present! Following your visit with Santa you will board the Funland Express, an indoor train journey through a stunning enchanted forest. You can then enjoy the festivities of the day and even meet Rudolph, Santa's favourite reindeer! Throughout the day, you can enjoy the Kidz Kingdom play area or you can ride on a selection of children's rides. While the children are enjoying the fun, the grownups can have a mince pie and a festive tipple!
Every Christmas at Funland we love to show our support to Epilepsy Action UK with our Christmas wishing well and our Christmas raffle. Each year the raffle is held on Christmas Eve and the first place winner will be contacted on the phone by Santa himself, just before he sets off on his rounds.

Leisure HAMBLEDON FOLK CLUB WINTER LISTINGS Wednesday 13 December Magpie Lane
Magpie Lane is a fivepiece folk band from Oxford, specialising in traditional English songs and tunes. They combine powerful vocals with vigorous tunes, performing a wide selection of Christmas carols, wassails and dance tunes, many of them quite unusual. Between them the band plays concertina, melodeon, bouzouki, cello, fiddle and guitar and all of them sing; when they burst into five part harmony it is a joy to hear. These veterans of traditional English folk music are perfect for our Christmas session – and there’ll be a cup of mulled cider and mince pie for everyone. Christmas event - book early! www.magpielane.co.uk

the early days including in our first year - 1997). In this evening to mark Hambledon Folk Club’s 21 years, floor spots will be provided by former organisers and MCs of the club while the guests include popular artists such as George Wilson, Ramskyte and Tom Lewis… assuring a really great evening! Ramskyte will be reforming as a three-part a cappella group to present some of their ‘greatest hits’! Their strong voices create a rich sound with unusual vocal harmonies. Take The Shilling are local singer and guitarist George Wilson and singer/song-writer Paul Openshaw from Dorset. They are teaming up once more to recreate their own, highly entertaining act. http://www. oldfocsle.org.uk/SCoFF/georgewilson/ and http://paulopenshaw.com Tom Lewis hardly needs any introduction to Hambledon. He is a retired submariner who sings songs about the sea: shanties, his own compositions and miscellaneous numbers, sometimes accompanying himself on ukulele or button accordion. He has a strong, clear voice and will soon have you singing along to his rousing choruses. Tom chats easily with his audience and punctuates his songs with interesting stories and anecdotes. www.tomlewis.net

About Carina
After my daughter's engagement in 2015 the very next exciting thought was "Her Wedding Dress". I couldn't wait for her to start looking. What a pleasure it was to go into the "world of weddings" with her. I loved the excitement of visiting different bridal shops. When she put on the dress we both just knew, it was the one. We had so much fun and laughs along the way that a seed was sown. Carina Rose Bridal was borne out of that wonderful experience, my daughter’s special day. I wanted the excitement to continue by helping other brides choose the dress of their dreams for their special day. So, I set about searching for the right location and then the premises to put down my roots and begin to realise my dream. It has been 2 years in the making, resulting in finding my pretty shop which is part of a Grade 2 listed converted pub in Stockbridge, a beautiful market town. Carina Rose Bridal will be opening on Friday 1st December Please contact Carina on 01264 810011 www.carinarosebridal.co.uk 2 The Vine, High Street, Stockbridge, SO20 6HF 14

HampshirePeople TALKS WITH LAURA TRANT
L
aura Trant is even more petite and immaculate in real life than she appears on television. We meet at a local farm shop with me fresh from a painting lesson. I apologise for smelling of turps, but no matter, Laura is effortlessly friendly and funny. Born in Dorset she lived on a beef farm for the first two years of her life. It was ”a really wonderful family life with three siblings”. Later she went to Aberystwyth University and did her postgraduate course at Falmouth University. I wonder how she got into television journalism. “After those four years I felt I needed some city life. I worked in Southampton at Radio Solent and then took the plunge and went to London. I knew at sixteen that I wanted to be journalist, so it was a question of doing voluntary work, then my degree, then once in London knocking on doors, working on my CV and being persistent. It paid off. I’ve had some fantastic experience working on the Jeremy Vine and Michael Parkinson radio shows. After two years I got the opportunity to work for BBC South Today and so moved back to Hampshire. I’ve been with South Today for ten years now.” Laura appears as relaxed in front of the camera as she does in person. Does she get nervous? “No not really. At the moment I work both in the studio at Southampton and in London reporting live on outside broadcasts. I’m often asked if I can get to a location quickly. I always yes. I love having to think on my feet - it can be very exciting! In the studio it may look effortless, but there is a production team speaking to your ear piece all the time and sometimes the autocue has been known to fail, plus there is a script to adhere too.” There have been challenging moments for Laura during live broadcasts. “I remember reporting from the Grenfell Tower when a woman got between me and the camera. I was unsure how she was going to react, because she was understandably very angry and upset, but the camera kept rolling and I just had to keep going. Reporting on baby Charlie Gard was always hard.
16
My degree was in International Relations, with my dissertation on HIV and Aids in Africa, which interests me still. I visited Rwanda to report on life post-genocide. The stories I heard there, and the sights I saw seventeen years after the event, will stay with me forever. It was a horrific carnival of killing, the brutality of which you can’t come to terms with.Yet the people there are incredible and keep moving forward. But of course, there have been some wonderful lighter moments. I drove the 007 Aston Martin DBS previously driven by Daniel Craig, and had the opportunity to cover CarFest and be driven around the track in a bright orange McLaren 650 Sport. I just love speed!” Is Laura ambitious for promotion? “Do you know, I really love my life the way it is now. I couldn’t be happier working part of the time in London and the rest of the time in Southampton, it’s a really good balance.” Who would Laura interview given the chance? “Oh easy, Dolly Parton! I just adore her! She is the ultimate contradiction - the way she looks contrasted with her values, beliefs and charity work. I would love to interview her. I have all of her records and have seen her in concert three times. She’s had an amazing and hard life but remains so positive. I love the stories she tells in her songs. Her personality and look are so upbeat, she’s just amazing. I sing along to her in the car - I don’t care if the windows are open or not!”
So how does Laura relax? “I’m a split personality, I think. When I’m in the country I know I have the excitement of the city when I want it, and when in the city I love the idea of escaping to the countryside. I like to walk and cycle and practice my watercolour painting. I’m definitely a country girl at heart. I love Dorset and the New Forest, and I think we’re so lucky to have coast and forest in Hampshire. There’s nothing like being in the fresh air surrounded by natural beauty; I believe it’s really good for your soul to be away from constant communication and just be. I’ve recently taken up fly-fishing which enables me to enjoy the outdoors and completely focus. It’s so relaxing. While in London I’ve started a six-week wine course with Berry Brothers in St. James’s. It’s fascinating but my friends find it hysterical because I’m such a lightweight. Two glasses and I’m done! But I do have a passion for Sauvignon Blanc and Hampshire Sparkling Wine, which is excellent and the only wine I take to friends.” Laura combines all of this with her position as Vice President of The Wessex Cancer Trust. “The Trust makes such a difference to those suffering, caring and living with cancer and to those who have lost loved ones to the disease. The work, research and support The Trust offers is absolutely invaluable. I’m very proud to be involved.”
What will Laura be doing this Christmas? “I just adore Christmas and buying presents for people! I would happily be Mrs. Christmas in my next life! It will be at my parents’ house here in Hampshire with all the family. We still open our stockings on Mum and Dad’s bed like we did when were kids! Christmas is all about kids, isn’t it? We don’t have any TV on during Christmas but play lots of games with my nephew and two nieces. It’s all very traditional and we have the most amazing time. One day it will be wonderful to have my own kids, too. I’m really in awe of my sister and Mum for the way they are with their children.” What would be Laura’s perfect gift? “Chocolate! I’m well known at work for having chocolate biscuits under my desk and there is a certain shop in Winchester where I buy my peanut butter chocolate. I always get embarrassed when they say, ‘Hello Laura, your usual chocolate?’ Hair straighteners, I couldn’t live without them! My hair can go very curly! And the colour of a clear blue summer skyyou can’t beat it or paint it - such an amazing colour, I just love it.”

What’s it like being ‘Laura Trant’? “I don’t think of myself as famous at all – I’m just me - I don’t mind being recognised as people are always so lovely.”
Here’s wishing Laura the perfect Christmas under a clear blue, frosty sky and a very happy 2018. GG. www.thewessexcancer.org.uk

housands of visitors have been able to walk in the footsteps of ancient people thanks to upgrades to a Roman villa at Buster Ancient Farm, including authentic new flooring. The popular tourist attraction, in Chalton, south of Petersfield, has recently completed £100,000 worth of alterations to the building, with £25,000 being provided by a grant from East Hampshire District Council. The works include a new floor of ‘Roman concrete’, called opus signinum, created using authentic materials, to level the floor and make it more accessible for people with mobility issues. The villa’s walls have also been plastered in the Roman way, doors have been widened, a set of stairs has been constructed to a mezzanine floor and windows have been enlarged to allow more light. Since completion in September more than 17,000 visitors have been to see the improved villa, including thousands of local schoolchildren. The alterations were partly funded by a £25,000 Cabinet grant from East Hampshire District Council. Maureen Page, a director of Butser Ancient Farm, said: “We wouldn’t have been able to do this work without EHDC’s grant and we are very grateful to them for supporting us in this way. Butser Ancient Farm is the third most visited educational attraction in the South Downs and brings ancient times to life for the thousands of schoolchildren and visitors who come to see our living history exhibits.” Cllr Julie Butler, EHDC Portfolio Holder for Customer Relations, toured the villa to see the alterations. “The Roman villa looks amazing and really brings home to you what life was like for people 2,000 years ago,” she said. “Butser Ancient Farm is a real treasure and one of East Hampshire’s top attractions so we are very proud to have been able to support it in this way.” Local craftsmen were brought in to work on the villa. Around 40 tonnes of mud floor was dug out and replaced with the opus signinum by hand. For added authenticity some touches were added to the wet concrete, including the footprints of a Roman soldier’s hobnail boots and the paw marks of the household dog! The walls were laboriously lined with thousands of oak lathes, on which was added three coats of lime plaster, each of a different consistency. A final glassy coat creates a cool and distinctively Roman feel to the rooms. Butser Ancient Farm features archaeological reconstructions of ancient buildings from the Stone Age, Iron Age, Roman Britain and the AngloSaxon period and is visited by more than 30,000 school children a year. www.easthants.gov.uk

Community BISHOP'S WALTHAM FIRST RESPONDERS WIN NATIONAL AWARD
L
ocal group Bishop’s Waltham Community First Responders have received a prestigious award for their continued work in the local community. At a glittering ceremony in Manchester on 3rd November the volunteers were presented with the accolade of ‘Community Responder Scheme of the Year’ at the 2017 UK Heart Safe Awards. The volunteer led group were shortlisted in July and have been eagerly awaiting the results since then. Going into the finals against 5 other schemes from across the country, the Community Responders won their
category at first attempt, and are quite rightly celebrating this amazing achievement. Since their inception from the vision of retired local Ambulance Service paramedic and trainer David Williamson over 15 years ago, these volunteers have attended to the emergency medical needs of over 500 patients per year, nearly always arriving at the scene before the ambulance. With exceptional basic life support training provided by South Central Ambulance Service it’s their amazing 24/7 response time to an emergency that marked them out from the other Community Responder schemes. Regular in-house training including guest speakers, real life scenario simulation and 6

His receipt of the award accentuates the extra mile the group go to provide support for the local community. He emphasised that the group are volunteers and rely on donations from the public to provide everything from uniforms to defibrillators. He said, ‘the scheme would not operate without the support of both our local community and the schemes’ volunteers, and I accept this award as a representative of them both’. The group have also gained praise from the Mayor of Winchester, Cllr David McLean, who reiterated how proud the Bishop’s Waltham Community Responders should be of this achievement and of their continued voluntary work in their community. Since its inception in 2012, these awards are the UK’s leading national competition to recognise and celebrate the best in various ‘Heart Safe’ environments including lifesaving activities. The awards ceremony and black tie event raised money for the charity Hand on Heart which is committed to reducing the number deaths of young people due to sudden cardiac arrest, a cause close to the heart of Bishop’s Waltham Community First Responders. NEW IMAGE COLOSTRUM - BOOST YOUR IMMUNITY THIS WINTER!
Hair Art the premier hair salon in Bishops Waltham and Christchurch, is one of the leading names in hairdressing in Hampshire and Dorset, impeccable service, highly trained team of experts, a reputation built over 20 years. An experience not to be missed.
P
lease may I tell you a story? - my story! I have an autoimmune disease and couldn’t see any hope for the future at all. I have had MS since my mid-twenties. Last year I gave myself a year till I was walking with a stick. But now, aged 54, my life is so improved that I have to pinch myself to remember how it was. In June 2016, I was introduced to flash-dried and very high purity colostrum products by a visitor from the Southern Hemisphere. The capsules have a unique alpha lipid protective coating so 93% of the colostrum’s potency gets through to the lower intestine and is digested. I have been taking them for 18 months now and here’s the results. • Chronic fatigue has disappeared. No more day-time naps. • Used to be able to walk 0.7 miles before collapse. Now can walk up to 4 miles • Improved balance – can stand on one leg now! • Mood brightening – sense of optimism • No coughs or colds or minor illnesses • Improved fitness and muscle strength These wonderful products re-build your stem cells and boost your immune system. This is not a guaranteed cure but can help fight off infection.
These products can help with many autoimmune diseases including: • Parkinson’s Disease • Rheumatoid Arthritis • Irritable Bowel Syndrome • Crohn’s disease • Lupus • Fibromyalgia • Multiple Sclerosis Just a thought – in my circuits class in recent weeks I found I can stand on one leg without keeling over. I never thought I’d be able to do that again! Please get in touch if you’d like to know more. contact@newimageuk.co.uk; www.newimageuk.co.uk; 07507 489345 22

LOCAL HEARTSTART SCHEME WINS THE HEARTS OF THE JUDGES IN NATIONAL HEART SAFE AWARDS
HAMPSHIRE ARTIST SEEKING TO RAISE £7,500 HAS ACHIEVED HIS TARGET
M
eon Valley Heartstart (MVHS) has become the “Educational Establishment of the Year” in the 2017 National Heart Safe Awards, beating off competition from a shortlist of 4 finalists from around the country in this category. The UK Heart Safe Awards is the UK’s leading national awards scheme to celebrate organisations and employers who invest in creating Heart Safe environments. The award was announced at a glittering charity dinner in Manchester on Friday 3rd November and was presented to Robert Shields who attended the ceremony on behalf of MVHS.
Nativity 2016 by Pete Colding
A
Southsea artist looking for £7,500 to fund a major solo Christmas exhibition in Oxford this December has achieved his target and more. Pete Codling has already raised £7,810 from 45 supporters at https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/naivety “The money raised will go to framing 15 large charcoal drawings,” explains Pete, who has 20 days remaining to raise the money. Pete makes large fragile charcoal drawings on paper measuring 7ft by 4ft and these each cost £500 to frame. “By fragile I mean it is just carefully arranged dust on paper,” says Pete. “They will be hung in a public gallery with a footfall of over 10,000 people.” He adds: “The exhibition title Naivety is a play on the traditional Christmas 'Nativity' scene. The new work was inspired by the sketch 'Nativity 2016'. This was a personal response to the tragedy and horrors of Aleppo (and other cities) that we consumed as the norm on our Christmas TV news last year. It inspired me to create many more artworks along this theme. The artworks are a mix of traditional, classical, mythological and surreal with a contemporary twist.”
26
It has been an emotional week for David Williamson, the founder of the local Heartstart and the Community Responders Group (which also won the award for the Best Community Responders Group of the Year). He suffered a post-operative major haemorrhage last weekend and following a 999 call, was attended to by one of the Bishop’s Waltham Community First Responders before the ambulance arrived and he was admitted to hospital. Recovering at home David said “I am so pleased that both schemes have been recognised as best in their categories at national level through this award scheme. It is all down to the tireless work of the volunteers who keep the scheme going and are committed to saving lives. Having had firsthand experience of their work so recently, for me this is an extra special accolade for the people who give their time so selflessly. Without their dedication and hard work my situation could have been very serious indeed.”
The Naivety exhibition takes place at North Wall Gallery, Oxford from December 5 to January 6 with a private view on Saturday, December 16.
Meon Valley Heartstart helps save lives by training people in emergency life saving skills which can help keep someone alive until professional help arrives. It was established in 2001. Each year, through volunteer trainers and helpers Meon Valley Heartstart, trains more than 1,000 people of all ages across Hampshire in emergency life saving skills. Training is provided free of charge to community groups, the general public, educational institutions, businesses, GP practices and other organisations.

MAYOR OF WINCHESTER ATTENDS BOOK LAUNCH
NO TRICKS, JUST TREATS AT GATEWAY CLUB HALLOWEEN NIGHT
T
he Bishop’s Waltham Gateway Club received a real treat at its October Halloween event when it was presented with a cheque for £500 from the Bishop’s Waltham Town Team. The money was raised by the Town Team from the ticket sales for October Bishop’s Waltham Bites Event, featured in last month’s Parish News. The Gateway Club supports adults with learning difficulties. It meets between 7pm and 9pm every first and third Mondays of the month at the Church Hall in Bishop’s Waltham. The Club aims to provide a fun and safe environment for its members. Events include discos, games, group outings, annual Christmas Dinner with a visit from Santa, and much more.
T
he Mayor of Winchester, Councillor David Mclean, attended the launch of a newly revised and updated book about Bishop’s Waltham, written by local author Alan Inder. The book launch took place at the Anvil Tearooms – one of the eye-catching buildings in town that is featured in the book. Called “The Changing Face of Bishop’s Waltham”, the first edition was published in 2011 but rapidly sold out. This newly updated edition has additional content and fresh photographs. The book shows how change has come to one of Hampshire’s medieval market towns – particularly over the last 150 years. The 108page book, in A4 landscape format, contains hundreds of “then and now” photographs and dozens of maps (dating back to 1841) with a detailed text to explain the changes.
Club leader Jani Chamberlain said “We are very grateful for this generous donation from the Town Team. As a small charity we depend on donations to be able to provide some extra activities for our members. Club members will help us to decide what activities to undertake next year with these funds.”
28
Town Team Acting Chairman Robin Shepherd, who, with Sweet Corner Proprietor, Sophie Green, presented the cheque at the Gateway Club’s Halloween event said “We are very pleased to be able to pass on the proceeds from Bishop’s Waltham Bites to such a deserving organisation. On behalf of the Town Team itself and the eight participating outlets, it is great to know that the funds we raised will be able to provide that little bit extra to Gateway Club activities.”
Published by the Bishop’s Waltham Society and the Bishop’s Waltham Museum Trust, the book is designed to provide local residents with a sense of their town’s development and how it has changed over time. It is a great spur for conversation between children and their parents and grandparents who remember the changes they have seen in their lifetime. Priced at just £16, its publication is timed to provide a great Christmas present for families.

Christmas Legends
D
o you know that many Christmas traditions have pagan origins very strongly linked to nature and our landscape? The Pagan winter solstice goes back thousands of years when evergreen trees were brought into the home and decorated with wax candles to create light symbolizing the sun, moon and stars. Called Yule trees and along with the simple decorations of holly and candles, this festival marked the darkest days of winter. Interestingly, and also linked with nature, another legend associated with the winter solstice is that of the annual ‘battle of the Oak and Holly Kings ‘where the Oak King overcomes the Holly King to reign until the summer solstice.
The Show Begins
So the event of the Christmas tree as we know it today evolved slowly over the centuries. The first known Christmas tree went up in the UK at Windsor Castle in 1800. Small wax candles, apples, nuts, dates, sweets and coloured paper flowers decorated and added light to the branches. It was an associate inventor of Edison’s who created the first set of electrical Christmas lights and in 1890, the Edison company published a brochure offering lighting services for Christmas. By 1900, commercial premises were beginning to string up lights in their shop windows. An Edison advert at that time offered bulbs, which you could rent, along with their lighting system for use over the festive season.
Fairy Lights
Small Christmas lights only became known as fairy lights after the light opera company D’Oyle Carte in 1882 used tiny incandescent lights in the hair of their players in a comic production about an immortal band of fairies. However, it would be another century before fairy lights came into more general use because until the mid 1950’s most households, either did not have electricity or could not afford it. This meant that until this time, it was still very popular to use candles to light up Christmas trees.

White Christmas
In recent years, it is rare that we see a white Christmas. It was the Victorians who first used illustrated snow scenes at Christmas. Not least because of Charles Dickens timely story ‘A Christmas Carol’. Also, Britain was still in the middle of a mini ice age with many of the Victorian winters seeing substantial snowfall. In 1836 on the 25th December, snow depths reached 15 feet with drifts of up to 50 feet!
Themed Christmas Trees
Seasonal décor is becoming increasingly sophisticated and it is on-trend to have trees dressed not only singular colours or a maximum of two colours, but also as a theme. There are decorations and baubles that symbolise style, humour, vintage items, toys and animals. We can now have trees to keep both the adults and the children happy! We can recreate the atmosphere of a white Christmas with a silver and white tree or amuse the children with a red and green tree decorated with imps and elves! Or indulge in some nostalgia from a more recent bygone age and make a vintage tree adorned with the bright ornaments and tinsel of four decades ago.
Inspired by Nature
It seems current festive trends reflect a strong demand for man made decorations and artificial trees, which are very difficult to tell from the real thing.Yet, the simplicity and special touch of nature still inspires us. So we use a combination of both contemporary decorations and foliage we can gather from our gardens and the landscape. Holly and ivy to drape over mantelpieces, wreaths of evergreen branches to adorn doors and casual bunches of mistletoe to hang in halls. It seems, in the midst of the winter solstice, we still have a hankering to return to the ancient world of nature, which of course, was the very reason, so long ago, those pagan and mid winter, traditions first began. The Robinour smallest bird of ‘pray’? BY CLAIRE THURLOW
FEATURE ISSUE 27 | DECEMBER
Y
ou might expect to hear sublime singing in a cathedral, but last Christmas I was surprised to hear the melodious notes of a robin in Winchester Cathedral. At first, I thought it was my imagination, but then I saw the little bird perched on the magnificent carved choir screen. It paused, head cocked, watching me with curiosity. I hoped it would sing for me again, but it flew away, before landing nonchalantly on the back of a chair. It behaved as if it owned the place. I was later told that the robin (and its mate) had taken up residence in these ancient lodgings and were being fed by the priests. Meanwhile in Liverpool last year, a robin settled in the giant Christmas tree as workmen hauled it into the Cathedral. Apparently, the bird chirped along with a few services, much to the delight of the congregation, but had departed by New Year. Should we be surprised that robins seem to enjoy the company of humans? We might suppose that in miserable weather they are simply seeking shelter, although a cold and draughty cathedral hardly offers a cosy berth. And that wouldn’t explain the robin which greeted me in a hot and humid glasshouse at Kew Gardens this summer. It sat on a low wall beside a palm tree, coolly watching the sweltering tourists. The robin’s jaunty appearance is so bound up with our notions of Christmas, that it seemed particularly out of place in such a tropical environment. There seem to be lots of robins around this winter.Whenever I work in the garden, it’s not long before I hear that familiar ‘tic tic’ from a low branch or fencepost. If the ground is too hard for worms and insects, the robin tuts impatiently until I have filled the bird feeder, barely waiting for me to step away before sweeping in for a snack. Preferring to take food from
34
the ground, it will also dip onto the path, flicking its wings and tail before making off with any seeds which have spilled. The robin’s boldness has led to many reports of these cheeky birds accepting food from an outstretched hand, and anyone digging a flower bed can expect to have a robin tailing them for upturned worms. Of course, unless a robin has particularly distinctive markings, it’s impossible to tell one from another. During the winter, some of the British birds may have flown to warmer climes, and robins from the colder reaches of Scandinavia and Eastern Europe may temporarily take their place. Although a little less feisty than during the breeding season, the robin is still highly territorial, and its beautiful, liquid song warns potential interlopers to keep out. Along with the nightingale, the robin will also sing after sunset, given the artificial light of a street lamp (or Christmas lights, perhaps). Every year, the shops are full of Christmas cards which feature the nation’s ‘favourite’ bird (as declared in a UK poll in 2015).This might be because the robin’s scarlet plumage on its chest and face give it an appealing appearance, and it stands out rather well against a background of a traditional (if unrealistic), snow-decked Christmas landscape. Or is it because the Victorians, who popularised the sending of festive greetings cards, nicknamed postmen ‘robin redbreast’ because they wore red jackets? There are also legendary Christian connotations. Did this plucky little bird get its red breast from a drop of Christ’s blood at the crucifixion, or was it burned while fanning the flames to keep baby Jesus warm? One thing is for sure, this colourful little bird is a firm favourite in town and country alike. If you want to help the RSPB monitor these, and other garden birds, you can sign up to participate in the Big Garden Birdwatch in January 2018. Registration opens on 13 December 2107 with more details at www.rspb.org.uk.

Community FOREST FUN FOR UNDER 5S IN TOTTON
THE GLASS SIDED STAIRCASE COMPANY Bring light into your home
We design, supply and fit bespoke, handcrafted glass sides to your existing staircases
H
ampshire and IOW Wildlife Trust staff at Testwood Lakes Nature Reserve, Totton don’t stop exploring outside just because it’s winter. In fact this is a great time to get outside as it’s a magical time of year. There are beautiful crisp, frosty mornings and there are thrushes and other birds more visible, feeding on berries and bugs amongst the bare trees. Every Tuesday, parents/guardians of children under 2 can take part in a ‘Natural Babies’ session. This involves a buggy walk with points of interest on the way. There are plenty of sheltered places including a roundhouse, bird hide and education centre to warm up and have a go at natural crafts. There is time for sensory play, songs and stories in these spaces too, or outside when warm enough. Every Monday, children aged 2 to 5 years can take part in a Forest School programme with their parent/guardian. During a 6 week programme, children are shown how to use fire strikers to make sparks, and how to cook things on the campfire such as bread, crumpets and marshmallows. They are carefully supervised whilst they whittle sticks, use saws to make items from wood and use mallets to make flags. When they want to play they can choose to mix something up in the mud kitchen, make dens, use ropes to make pulleys, make maps, use binoculars, look for bugs, or use their imagination to play games with their new found friends. A parent who brought their child to Forest School said: “My child is more aware of and is more caring towards animals and insects. Her concentration has improved, as has her understanding of taking turns, and she is better at playing with others. The staff at Testwood Lakes make the ordinary into a magical experience.” There are also regular ‘Wildlife Tots’ activities for children aged 2-5 years and their parent/guardian can come along to. Every second Tuesday and every last Friday of the month, 10.30am-12noon there are sessions linked to the different seasons and wildlife. Sessions involve a story, exploring/walks and making something fun to take home. To find out more visit: www.hiwwt.org.uk/whats-on or call the Testwood Lakes Centre on 02380 667929 or email: testwoodlakes@hiwwt.org.uk

BOILING KETTLE AT BOTLEY MARKET HALL!
BISHOP'S WALTHAM ROTARY NEWS: THE HEIGHT OF FASHION
B
otley’s Market Hall certainly pulls out the stops for its series of shows in the Winter months :Tickets are selling fast for the new show by the great duo – the Opera Dudes – on 27th January (see www.operadudes.com) – “Licensed to trill”.
T
hursday 26th October saw a spectacular Fashion Show organised by the local Rotary Club and presented by Boutique ME. This was all in aid of Women v Cancer who support Breast Cancer Care; Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust; and Ovarian Cancer Action. This Casual and Evening Wear fashion Show was a sell out and raised £2850.00 for the charities. Debbie Walker, currently President of Bishop’s Waltham Rotary and organiser of the event, commented that she was overwhelmed with the turnout: it was a complete sell out. ‘There wasn’t a spare seat in the Jubilee Hall, and everyone enjoyed the magnificent display of fashion from Boutique ME, Pajamas by Avon and children’s clothes by Bishops Waltham & Alresford Toy Box .’ She said: ‘I am so pleased for all the participants this evening: Boutique ME, Avon, ToyBox, the stall holders, many from the local High Street and the local Rotary members, wives and partners for doing all the work behind the scenes, and of course the charities who we are raising funds for.’ ‘This is a great example of Rotary working with local traders to raise funds for these very worthwhile charitable organisations.’ Boutique ME opened in April 2017 in Bishop’s Waltham High Street (previously Cassis) by Tracey Dudman, who was tremendously enthusiastic about supporting the charities benefiting from this event and keen to support Debbie and the local Rotary club. Bishop’s Waltham Rotary Club has been supporting local, national and international charitable causes for over twenty five years. The club organises the local annual Carnival and Show to raise funds for local charities and 'Roger' the Christmas train providing a mobile carol broadcasting service for local children will be coming to many streets in and around Bishops Waltham in the lead up to Christmas. Great songs, humour and rapport with the audience. A treat of an evening out. Then on Sat 17th February the Boiling Kettle Theatre Company present a one-man show “Defender of the dead” – a tour de force with a multi-faceted, many voiced performance from Eltjo De Vries about a retired Army NCO tasked with defending a sensitive archaeological site near Stonehenge, having to cope with weird religious cults as well as a neurotic archaeologist. Sad, amusing, funny, tragic, thought-provoking, according to the critics. See www.boilingkettle.co.uk. Further information on both shows from Derek Oswald, 01489 781155.
GEORGE HOLLINGBERY MEETS WICKHAM FIREFIGHTERS
M
eon Valley MP George Hollingbery has visited Wickham Fire Station to meet crew and learn about a new technique to help lift people who have fallen over. He was shown a demonstration of the equipment that uses cushions that can be inflated with air to lift up a casualty and other blue light services can call upon the kit, if needed. “It was a real pleasure to meet the firefighters and learn more about their work and what they are doing to help other organisations, like the ambulance service, by using this equipment,” said George. “Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service is a very forward-thinking organisation, always looking to innovate and find new ways to work in partnership with the police and ambulances services, as my visit showed and this is encouraging to see. I welcome the appointment of the new chief officer, Neil Odin, and I’m sure he will continue to take the service forward in the years to come.” www.georgehollingbery.com
