We had several quotes & design suggestions from other companies before meeting Ben. From the first meeting we were impressed with Ben’s understanding of our needs & he gave us excellent practical ideas. We particularly liked that he was able to show us samples there and then, without the need to visit a show room. Dan & Mitch (our fitters) were brilliant- they were friendly, respectful of our home, involved us in decisions along the way and, without doubt, made the process far less stressful than we imagined it would be! We have been recommending Happy Kitchens to everyone we’ve shown off our fantastic new kitchen to. Thanks so much guys - Mr Fog
At Happy Kitchens, we offer a wide range of makeover services ranging from replacement worktops, kitchen doors, splashbacks, hinges and wirework to new appliances and much more. We also offer new kitchen design and installation services too.

ifelong pacifist Benjamin Britten was asked to compose his War Requiem for the consecration of the rebuilt Coventry Cathedral in 1962 after its destruction in World War II. The work weaves together the Latin Mass text of a traditional requiem with the devastating war poetry of Wilfred Owen to produce a powerful denunciation of the wickedness of war and a warning to future generations of the senselessness of taking up arms against one’s fellow man. 2018 marks the centenary of the end of the Great War, the “war to end all wars” according to H G Wells, and many choirs across the country will be giving performances of Britten’s timeless message of peace and denunciation of war in this year. Basingstoke Choral Society, Southampton Philharmonic Choir, Southampton University Philharmonic Choir and the City of Southampton Orchestra combine their considerable resources for this unique performance. They will be joined by a children’s choir from the Pilgrims’ School, Winchester, along with the internationally renowned London Mozart Players at the Anvil, Basingstoke on Saturday 9 June. Full details of the event can be found by visiting www.war-requiem2018.uk There will be a ‘Hampshire Remembers’ remembrance wall, where we extend an invitation to all participants to dedicate their attendance at the concert to anyone of any nationality adversely affected by any war by adding a personal message to the wall. “My subject is War, and the pity of War. The Poetry is in the pity… All a poet can do today is warn.” Wilfred Owen

HAMPSHIRE PEOPLE
The Forum talks with Liz Earle MBE 10
L
iz commenced her career as a Health and Beauty Editor for Woman’s Journal magazine, during which time she was encouraged to write the first of her books on wellbeing and nutrition – Vital Oils.
A television debut followed, covering health and beauty for ITV’s This Morning program. This led to her own show, Liz Earle Lifestyle, which ran for three series. In 2015 Liz returned to This Morning and she now has a regular ‘Inside Out Beauty’ slot. It encapsulates the belief that ‘you are what you eat’ and all the benefits a good diet brings to health and beauty. Towards the end of last year, Liz also filmed a mini-series on living well for This Morning in Sardinia and Greece, which was screened in January 2018. In 1995 she co–founded Liz Earle Naturally Active Skincare, now the global brand Liz Earle Beauty Co. Liz was awarded the MBE in 1997 for services to the beauty industry. Although the Liz Earle Beauty Co. is now owned by Walgreens Boots Alliance, Liz remained a global ambassador for the brand until stepping away completely in 2017. This allowed her to pursue her commitment to her quarterly magazine Liz Earle Wellbeing, which she founded in 2015, her regular podcast series and You Tube channel, and her Fairtrade jewellery range, Liz Earle Fair and Fine. Liz lives with her family on a farm in the West Country. She is an ambassador for the Sustainable Food Trust, Love British Food and Compassion in World Farming and was instrumental in the development of the food labeling pressure group FLAG (Food Labeling Agenda). Although engrossed in her new life, she still has a soft spot for Hampshire. Does Liz have a favourite place in Hampshire? I love visiting Chewton Glen Hotel for its amazing cookery school and restaurant food, incredible treehouses and lovely spa. Your journey is extraordinary: television presenter, prolific author, developer and co-founder of a global brand, ambassador, and charity founder. How do you maintain a healthy work-life balance? Family life comes first, so I get the really important dates such as school plays and concerts, holidays, parents’ evenings, etc. into the diary at the beginning of the year and then schedule work and social events around them. I particularly try to book my travel times and work trips during term-time when I’m not missed as much.
With travelling so much is there one thing you really miss and would take with you if you could? My photo albums. I make a single leather-bound album for each year, filled with the best family pictures. I have over thirty of these now and they are one of most treasured possessions. How would you describe yourself? Entrepreneur, writer, ecologist, philanthropist, organic farmer or all of the above? I would describe myself as an author, wellbeing entrepreneur, TV presenter and farmer. What inspires you? I find nature and the changing seasons endlessly inspiring, which is why Liz Earle Wellbeing is a quarterly magazine that embraces a new season in every new issue. My love of nature is also reflected in my jewellery collection, Fair and Fine which is inspired by my lifelong love of botanicals.
F EAT U R E I SSU E 3 3 | JU NE
Born in Portsmouth, Liz Earle is the best selling author of 35 books, a TV presenter, an entrepreneur and a farmer.
What fears do you have for the future of people’s health in the UK? I think that there is a high level of awareness now about the ‘you are what you eat’ message, but the next challenge is to make people aware that it’s actually more than that. It’s ‘what we eat has eaten’ that really matters and that impacts on your health and wellbeing. We need to think much bigger picture. Are your children following in your footsteps? I have 5 children ranging in age from 7 to 26 so it’s difficult to say what my youngest one will end up doing at this stage! However, I’m very fortunate to have my eldest child, Lily, working with me as the Digital Editor for Liz Earle Wellbeing – she’s incredibly talented and it’s lovely to get to spend so much time with her. We work really well together. Three things you can’t live without. My family: I’m at my happiest when at home on the farm with all five of my children. A daily dose of probiotics: Since writing my last book, The Good Gut Guide, I’m more aware than ever of the benefits of probiotics and I like to start my day with a glass of kefir, a live super-yoghurt drink packed with powerfully beneficial probiotics that gives me a real boost in the morning. My smart phone: I love connecting with my Liz Earle Wellbeing magazine readers on social media, especially Instagram, which does seem to foster the nicest online community. I have my own account too @LizEarleMe. What next for Liz Earle MBE? On a personal note, having recently travelled through Sardinia and Greece for a mini-series for This Morning on Blue Zones and the secrets to living long and well, I’ll be putting some of what I learnt into practice this year. This includes weaving ‘pockets of still’ into my day, spending more time with my family and making vegetables and legumes the centre of my diet, enjoying even more seasonal and locallygrown fruit and veg – especially anything green! On a professional note, the next step for Liz Earle Wellbeing, my quarterly digital and print magazine, is to go global! There can be no doubt Liz Earle will achieve all she sets out to do. Her new book The Good Menopause Guide by Liz Earle is published on 8 March 2018. (Orion Spring, £25). Lizearlewellbeing.com 11

Leisure SOUTHWICK VILLAGE D-DAY REVIVAL - 9TH & 10TH JUNE 2018
F
or the fifth year running, the village of Southwick is joining in partnership with Southwick Park to commemorate the anniversary of D-Day by offering an exciting and unique opportunity for visitors from all over the world to breathe in the atmosphere of those historic days at the nerve-centre of Operation Overlord. (Southwick is just North of Portsmouth on the South Coast of England, PO17 6EA).
Celebrity speakers now confirmed
Bill Moffatt – Operation Fortitude: Saturday 9th June @ 11:45 Renowned archaeologist Bill Moffatt will be speaking about ‘Operation Fortitude’. The Germans knew that at some stage the Allies would launch a cross-Channel invasion, but they were unsure of exactly where or when it would take place. As a crucial part of their preparations for D-Day, the Allies developed a deception plan to draw attention away from Normandy. The D-Day deception plan was codenamed Operation ‘Fortitude’ and was part of a larger overall deception strategy – Operation ‘Bodyguard’. ‘Fortitude’ consisted of two parts: ‘Fortitude North’ was meant to fool the Germans into thinking that the Allies would launch an attack on Norway, and ‘Fortitude South’ was designed to convince the Germans that an invasion would occur north-east of Normandy in the Pas de Calais. Max Arthur OBE – The Paras: Sunday 10th June @ 11:45 Max Arthur is acclaimed for his speciality in sourcing first-hand recollections of the twentieth century, particularly the First and Second World War. He was recognised in the 2013 New Year Honours with an OBE for his services to military history. He is the author of many bestsellers including Forgotten Voices of the Great War and Forgotten Voices of the Second World War.. He has presented two television documentaries based on his books: The Brits Who Fought For Spain for the History Channel and ‘Dambusters’. He will be talking about his latest book, ‘The Paras’. Published to coincide with 75th anniversary of its formation, this is the definitive history of the iconic Parachute Regiment. From the daring raids of World War 2 through Northern Ireland, The Falklands, Bosnia and Afghanistan, the Paras have a reputation for being where the fighting is fiercest. Amid the vines sits the Old Winery and courtyard, beautifully renovated into a rustic barn perfect to hold your wedding breakfast and evening reception. With original wooden beams, chandeliers made of vintage crystal cut wine glasses and 10ft oak doors, this room holds the characteristics of the old Winery it once was, but is also the perfect canvas to transform for each wedding. Wellbeing LAPIS CARE - COMPLICATED MADE EASY
DELIVERY PERSON REQUIRED FOR THE
MEON VALLEY FORUM IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS
L
apis Care was founded in 2015 by registered nurses Liz Blacklock and Hazel Daniel. They started the company because they believed there to be a lack of consistent, holistic, exceptionally good home care provision.
As registered nurses, Hazel & Liz have an approximate 60+ years of experience between them. There are very few incidences within health and social care that they haven’t seen or experienced. To maintain their registration and practice effectively and safely, Liz and Hazel must regularly revalidate and prove that they abide by their professional code of nursing conduct. This professional approach to care is cascaded down to their staff. This is an exciting time for Lapis Care. They are expanding their clientele and staff numbers. They shall be imminently rolling out their ‘drop-in’ information sessions around over the forthcoming months. These events are to provide information on the care industry and how to source, In addition there will be inviting various professionals, charities and experts to come along and give short seminars on their specialist areas Light refreshments and cake will be served. Just pop in for a general chat without any obligation or to ask a question. Lapis are VERY pleased to announce that the Care Quality Commission have recently completed their second inspection of their service and once again Lapis were found to be exceptionally good in all areas and overall. One client told the inspector that; ‘Lapis’ secret is that they treat each person as an individual’ If you have any queries at all about looking for quality home care either now on in the future, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Professional HOLIDAY - ALL PACKED AND READY TO GO?
T
he holiday season is nearly upon us and there are those vital checks that need to be done in the exciting lead up to that well earned break.
relying on an exchange of letters and telephone calls the couple and the lawyers all meet together to work out matters face to face constructively. Both mediation and collaborative law have the distinct advantage that the process is not driven by a court timetable and can be built around the family’s individual priorities seeking solutions. Children benefit hugely from knowing that their parents are working out their differences together as reinforced in this quote from Rosie then aged 9 – “It’s about sharing. If you see both parents, it’s sharing time, love, money, everything. I’m quite lucky really ‘cos my dad and mum aren’t rivals or anything. They’re just not together.” (Parent Problems by Bren Neale & Jennifer Flowerdew published by Young Voice). The Court route remains an option where it is simply not possible to agree the arrangements. The Court has the power to make Specific Issue or Prohibited Steps Orders as well as a Child Arrangements Order. The Court will be invited to consider both parents’ positions and in the absence of a compromise a decision will be imposed which hopefully will cater for everyone’s needs. However if such a step is being contemplated it is important that an application is made at an early opportunity as otherwise there is risk that there will insufficient time for the Court to consider the case.
•Valid passports – check; •Tickets printed – check; •Travellers’ cheques ordered – check; •Sun cream – check. However separated couples can face an added dilemma of having to agree the holiday arrangements with a former partner. Parents often have to juggle work commitments and child care through the extended summer holidays and this can be even trickier where lines of communication are strained or broken down completely. Obviously not everyone is able to reach agreement as to arrangements for the children such as holiday plans and it may be necessary to make an application to the Court for a decision to be made, but what other options are open to the couple? Often conflict can be resolved through involvement of specialist solicitors. Many family law solicitors are members of Resolution who believe in a constructive and non confrontational approach to sort out the dispute. Alternatively the couple may decide to try mediation. A mediator will meet with the couple together and will identify the issues on which they cannot agree and assist them with their discussions to try and reach an agreement. However the mediator is neutral and will not take sides and will encourage the couple to take legal advice when necessary. The couple may prefer to deal with issues through collaborative law where they and their lawyers work together. Rather than

T
he Bishop’s Waltham Camera Club (later changed to the Photographic Society to avoid a clash of abbreviations with the Cricket Club!) was formed in 2008 by Mike Tennent, Alan Inder, John Moore, Nigel Auckland and Mac Didymus - keen amateur photographers who wanted to share their passion for photography with other like-minded people in the local area. In the beginning meetings were held in each other’s homes and then in The Stables near St Peter’s Church Rectory. Workshops were held at one of the founder member’s business premises in Claylands Road. Existence of the club was passed around by word of mouth and a display of prints in the window of an empty shop in Bishop’s Waltham High Street. By the end of 2009 the membership had increased to 32. The Club was invited to display some prints at Hedge End Library which proved popular with the visiting public and members alike and so in 2012 the Society held its first exhibition of member’s prints at the Kings Church in Bishop’s Waltham. There were over 300 visitors over 3 days and the displays were well received. The exhibition has been held annually ever since and has evolved to include a local children’s photographic competition. Bishop’s Waltham Photographic Society (BWPS) now has a membership of around 60, with varying levels of experience from absolute beginners to experienced members. The Society has always been to improve and develop the skill levels of all our members. This is now achieved through: talks by external photographers, competitions, workshops, portfolio challenges, photo walks and an annual exhibition of member’s prints. The Society promotes a friendly and informal atmosphere in which everyone can share their photographic experiences and skills. If you are interested in photography and would like to spend time in the company of like-minded people come along and see how it all works – you will be made most welcome. Meetings are held on the first Thursday of the month in St Peter’s Church Hall in Bishops Waltham starting at 7.30pm. More details are on the website below. www.bishopswalthamphotosociety.co.uk

R
ichard Steel & Partners of Winchester which includes Nigel Chamberlain & Partners of Bishops Waltham started their online donation system in partnership with the charity MuchLoved at the start of 2012, so that they could offer their families and the general public an appropriate and simple way to collect funeral donations by credit and debit cards.
They combined this with a Tribute page facility as an additional bereavement support service for their families, which can be personalised with photographs and visiting donors can also leave a personal message for the family and opt to light a virtual candle. Richard Steel & Partners found that this new initiative was really appreciated by the families they served, and as well as reducing the administration of processing charitable donations it directed funeral guests to their website, significantly improving overall awareness of the services they offer. As a result, their tribute and donation system has gone from strength to strength and this year they have reached the amazing total of £1 million raised for charities since starting their online service. Iain Steel, the fourth generation of the Steel family to lead the firm says that ‘All my long-standing team really like using our MuchLoved service and the rise of funeral online giving has significantly reduced our manual donation administration. More importantly, the families we serve greatly appreciate the personalised online tribute pages we establish for each person, together with the ease of sharing this via social media and the simplicity of donating. It is amazing to reach the cumulative one-million-pound threshold and is testament to the real value of the service.” MuchLoved Trustee Jonathan Davies says that “Richard Steel & Partners were one of the first Funeral Directors to decide to introduce online funeral tributes and donations for their clients which made them a very early adopter of the service. We’re delighted that they’ve now reached such a fantastic milestone and look forward to helping them raise more money for good causes in years to come.” MuchLoved is the registered charity that has pioneered the development of Tribute sites in the UK over the last decade and offers Funeral Directors the simplest and most efficient method of publishing funeral notices and processing donations whilst at the same time offering their families a truly special way of sending condolences and sharing memories. yme disease is a serious bacterial infection most commonly contracted by the bite of an infected tick. Long grass, leaf litter and wooded areas are tick hot spots, but infected ticks are found even in urban parks and gardens and pets can bring them indoors. It is a growing problem in the UK. Public Health England estimates that there are 3,000 new cases of Lyme disease per year. However, this is likely to be a gross underestimate as there is a discrepancy in estimations, it is not a reportable disease, and there are still many UK healthcare professionals and patients who are not able to identify and diagnose the condition. Lyme Disease UK’s national awareness campaign “Wake Up to Lyme” aims to prevent further tick bites and Lyme disease infections over the coming season. I live in Hampshire and contracted Lyme disease in summer 2015 when I was 22. I have been very ill and debilitated from it since - I had to give up work and have spent a significant amount of time largely housebound. I was misdiagnosed for a long time and had to seek private treatment abroad, as is very common. Hampshire is a very high-risk area so it is incredibly important to know how to prevent tick bites, how to safely remove ticks and what the signs of Lyme disease are.
Know the signs
Ticks can be as small as a poppy seed and have a painless bite so are very easy to miss. Early signs can include fatigue, fevers, nausea, flu-like symptoms, Bell’s palsy, headaches and a stiff neck. The most distinctive symptom is a bull’s eye rash, but the rash can also be irregular and only appears in two out of three cases. If undiagnosed or left untreated neurological and cardiac complications often occur. Lyme disease is frequently mistaken for other conditions including ‘Summer Flu’, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, MS, ALS, and Arthritis.
Key tips to protect yourself
- Take extra precaution in long grass, leaf litter and wooded areas, 26

manda Holden had a return visit to Swanmore College with her husband Chris Hughes in May to formally open the new performing arts building. Amanda attended the school in the
1980's, and was given a personal tour by the head teacher, Kyle Jonathan. Swanmore College pupils put on an amazing show, including singing and dancing, with a host of former pupils

W
hen Doctor John Dolittle of Puddlebyon-the-Marsh is taught by his wise old parrot Polynesia how to talk to animals, news of his skills spreads far and wide. Soon animals across the world send messages asking for his help. So, he buys a leaky old ship and, together with his trusty pet-crew of Jip the dog, Chee-Chee the monkey, Dab-Dab the Duck and permanently hungry Gub-Gub the pig, sets forth on a mission to heal illness, spread compassion and gain a greater understanding of the animal kingdom. 28
Mr Jonathan stated that “It was an absolute pleasure to welcome Amanda back to her old school and show her how much it has changed over the years. We are very proud of Amanda and Swanmore College has always taken a keen interest in the career of our former pupil” Amanda was also called 'an inspiration to pupils' by Mr Jonathan, as she waived her fee, with the college instead making a charitable donation on her behalf. The school also said “We would like to thank all those who attended, the staff and pupils for putting on an amazing show and a huge thank you to Amanda and Chris for their time and enthusiasm. It was a phenomenal evening that makes us proud of Swanmore Community!” For more information: www.swanmore-school.co.uk A funny, much-loved and exciting adventure, with a strong message about responsibility towards animals and the environment, this show is created by the same Illyria team who brought you an entire menagerie of animal puppets in Danny the Champion of the World and a life-size T-Rex in The Lost World. The show is suitable for cheeky monkeys aged 5+. Tickets are priced at: Adult £16, Child (14 and under) £9, Family (2 adults and 2 children) £45. Hampshire Mum Rebellion
ecently I was at a lovely dinner party – really lovely, but towards the end of the evening it was clear that the men had remained at the dining table happily quaffing red wine and port. Over on the comfy sofa, there we were, the women, sipping water and various soft drinks. Now don’t get me wrong, it’s not a complaint, just an epiphany. If we women had been living in another culture we would have been clad in black, making baskets or lace, but still waiting for our men. Different culture, same story. Actually, it’s not about the drink, but rather that probably none of the men present would have sat on a comfy sofa and drunk water while we women had a few drinks. It’s simply the way it is. I figure it’s fine, and that most of my subservient habits are my own fault. I live with four males (if you include the dog), and trust me, they need looking after. But the winds of change are building in the Pagan household. The golf season is upon us again, Star I, now with lovely girlfriend, is flying off here and there, and Star II will likewise be cycling off hither and thither; and so they should be. Meanwhile I’m available for coffee, events, weddings, light cooking and laundry duties and, of course, endless loo cleaning. Post comfy sofa epiphany I thought: ‘Hang on just one minute- what AM I doing?’ All our lives seem to pass by so very quickly, so I made a pact with myself. While the cats are away this mouse will play – in short – Rebellion. First stop our Market Town’s emporium of beauty. I don’t remember, as my feet will testify, the last time I had a pedicure. As I reclined there, having the final coat of ‘Tropical Coral’ applied, it just popped out of my mouth: “Do you do piercing?” I had my ears pierced at Top Shop Oxford Circus when I was sixteen. The girl who did it was no expert with the gun so the hole back and front didn’t line up but sloped downward. It never really healed so I gave up, resorting to the occasional Bette Lynch clip-ons.
36
So a week later, having paid up front to prevent crying off, my giggly Consultant chum joined me to witness the ritual, I felt more secure with a medic on hand. Although being a Consultant in Sexual Health I wasn't sure she would know what to do with ear lobes. However with the paper work done and the discreet ‘diamond’ studs chosen, quick as a flash it was done. I was a fully pierced-up member of society! But do you know, post a quick trip to the chemist to purchase a litre of TCP, I felt amazingly liberated, that well-known post rebellion feeling? The pain of piercing, quick though it was, was releasing and for a moment I understood the whole enjoyment of the pain gained through tattooing…so they say. A tattoo? At 57? Not a chance! No, I’m working my way up to real diamond studs, same price but look better on flabby flesh. I didn’t tell The Husband or the kids, happy in the knowledge that I could walk through the house wearing half a pantomime horse outfit and they would still ask ‘what’s for tea Mum’. It would be weeks before they noticed…or so I thought. Five days later sitting at supper Star II was stunned, “God Mum, you’ve had a PIERCING!!” Now who would have thought this could be such bad news? I wasn’t sporting a pair of stretchers, tongue or eyebrow studs, (all fine if that’s your choice), just simple tiny earrings. Then The Husband uttered the immortal words, ‘ When did you have that done? Don’t you think you should have consulted the family first’. That was right up there with ‘let them eat cake’. Stand by Pagans, rebellion starts off small but can grow to revolution! What next for Sandra Pagan? Leaving my hair to go curly that’s what! Oooh what a rebel I am! Sandra Pagan

GARDEN WEED CONTROL CAN BE CHALLENGING, LET’S UNDERSTAND WHY
twisting, thickening, elongation, and eventually death. The weed literally grows itself to death. Others target photosynthesis, the process where plants produce energy from sunlight. Blocking photosynthesis is only part of the story. When photosynthesis is blocked, highly toxic oxygen and other compounds form within the plant. These compounds rapidly destroy cell membranes, causing the weed to die. Many selective herbicides target enzymes within plant cells. Enzymes allow complex chemical reactions to occur. When herbicide targets an enzyme it disrupts the sequence of complex chemical reactions, producing highly toxic compounds in the plant and killing the weed. So why don't selective herbicides kill the useful plants we are trying to grow? The main reason is because the useful plants are able to metabolise (break down) the herbicide more rapidly than the weeds, allowing them to survive.
When to use weed killers
W
hen I first began studying plant science I remember a tutor asking me; ‘Kenyon, when is a daffodil a weed’? The answer it seemed was simpler than I knew at the time. Weeds can be described as any plant growing in an area where it is not wanted. If that daffodil is in your rose-bed it might be considered a weed. If your lawn grass is in your flower-bed it most certainly is a weed. You must hold a suitable qualification as a paid professional applying pesticide to control weeds. If you ask your regular gardener to do it, and she doesn’t hold a licence, then you are both breaking the law. The general code of practice covering the use of pesticides states that you should attempt other forms of control before you start to use pesticides to control a weed issue. Weeds can be relatively small like clover, or large like thistles. They are typically fast growing and spread rapidly, impacting on plant growth in and around them. Weeds are characterised as narrow leafed like grasses, broad-leafed liked dandelions or woody like brambles. Large weeds can often be removed by hand, but removing smaller weeds from your lawn may require an effective pesticide. Pesticides used for treating weeds are often called herbicides. There are two types of herbicides; selective herbicides control only certain types of weeds, typically either broad-leafed or grass-like weeds. Nonselective herbicides control and kill all plant types with which they come into contact. The application of a broad-leaf herbicide will affect and control the growth of broad-leaf plants. As such, this herbicide can usually be applied onto existing lawns, but will control only broadleaf weeds. A grass herbicide controls the growth of grass type plants. Grass herbicides can safely be applied to flower beds and will have no impact on broadleaf plants, but will control and impact on grasses.
How weed killers work
Some work by disrupting the fine balance of biochemical processes that occur within the plant. Often causing uncontrolled growth,
38
Herbicides are most effective on actively growing plants, as the active ingredient is carried by the sap of the plant. The faster the plant is growing, the quicker the solution will be moved through the plant. Application during less active growth periods are also effective, however the results will take longer.
How to use
Weed plants fall into different families. Much like sprouts and cabbage are different plants but within the same group of plants, some weeds are in the same family group and some in different groups. Certain plant groups are susceptible to certain herbicides that other groups might not be affected by. Identifying what weed you need to kill, understanding which plant group it is in and what pesticide needs to be used to treat that specific group is the key to weed killing success. All herbicides have application rates. Much like medication you take at home has a recommended dose. Exceed the dose and you may cause issues, take too little and there may be no effect. Getting the dose right isn’t just about how much you pour out of the bottle, it’s also about how much water you add to the mix and how much of the mix is applied to the weed.
Is one application enough?
If you select the correct herbicide for the weed you aim to kill, use the correct dose rate and apply at the right time then often one application is enough. However some weed varieties are more resilient than others. Some have thick leaf coatings or hairs that reduce the contact of the droplets of pesticide that have been sprayed on the weeds. Some weeds are persistent and are not controlled after only one application and several, consecutive applications are recommended. Applications may be necessary throughout the growing season and should continue until the weeds have been successfully controlled. Failing to do so may increase the weed’s resistance to the type of pesticide used – much like the risks of not finishing a course of antibiotics. Often additives can be used along with the pesticide to increase the efficacy of the chemicals present. Remember, weeds are fast growing and quick to set and disperse seed. These seeds germinate to form new weeds, so regular herbicide applications are essential. It’s relatively complex, which is why you need to study for an exam to carry a licence to use pesticides. Community CAMPAIGN TO FIX BROKEN SOUTH DOWNS WAY TRAIL REACHES 60% OF TARGET
A
campaign to raise £120,000 to carry out much-needed improvements on the South Downs Way has reached more than 60 per cent of its target with six months, and the main summer walking season, still to go.
More than £75,000 has been donated to ‘Mend our Way’, a campaign led by the South Downs National Park Trust, asking people who’ve enjoyed the South Downs Way to support significant repair work on four broken sections of the national trail. Find out more and pledge your support at www.southdowns.gov.uk/mendourway Andy Gattiker, who manages the South Downs Way, said: “Thank you so much, we are blown away by your generosity! The cold, wet winter has taken its toll on the damaged sections but because of your love for the South Downs Way we’re more than 60% towards our target – and being able to carry out these much-needed improvements. “With the warmer weather and bank holidays ahead we’re looking forward to seeing more people enjoying walking, cycling or riding the trail. It’s an amazing resource and, if you love the South Downs Way, please consider supporting our campaign.” More than 20,000 long-distance walkers, cyclists and riders complete the 160km South Downs Way National Trail every year and many millions more explore a section of it which causes a lot of wear and tear. Existing funding allows the National Park Authority to make most repairs but there are four significant projects which can’t be tackled using existing funds. Each year, as the erosion gets worse, they become harder to fix. The ‘Mend our Way’ campaign is being run by the South Downs National Park Trust, a new charity which works with partners to protect the National Park for future generations. The charity is supported by the National Park Authority who will cover the Trust’s core costs for the first three years, meaning all funds raised can be focused on important projects within the National Park.
What needs to be done?
Inglorious mud! Old Winchester Hill is a scheduled ancient monument with an Iron Age Hill Fort, a Bronze Age cemetery and is also a National Nature 42
Reserve. No wonder that it’s one of the most iconic hills in the National Park. But the route up to it becomes a slippery kilometre of boot-churned mud every winter. Being inaccessible to machinery and vehicles makes it a great place to be (when it’s dry) but almost impossible to fix. We need £50,000 to get scrape away the mud and replace the surface with stones. Remote location seeks sensitive scar repairs. For one of the most remote sites on the South Downs Way Millpond Bottom, between Beacon Hill and Penn Hill, has some impressive scaring. Successive feet, wheels and hooves have more than doubled the width of the chalk track – putting nearby sensitive Scheduled Ancient Monuments at risk. We need £10,000 to safely transport materials to the site, mend the trail and keep walkers on the straight and narrow. Paying the price of popularity. More than 80,000 people walk the high Plumpton Plain track between Ditchling Beacon and the market town of Lewes every year and although it’s 200m above the sea, the path is flat so surface water is a big problem. At more than 1km long and at least 3m wide, we need £25,000 to repair, strengthen and add drainage so the path can continue to give joy to thousands of people. Water water everywhere. Hyden Lane near Butser Hill sits on top of the chalk ridge but suffers from a lack of drainage. As large puddles get trapped on the busy track the surface breaks up and becomes muddy. It will take £35,000 to fix 1.6km of the track – replacing the existing surface with new layers and creating a camber to help it drain. ‘Mend our Way’ is part of the national ‘Make a Million’ initiative, run by the British Mountaineering Council, which seeks to raise £1,000,000 for some of the UK’s most treasured trails. EAST MEON GARDEN CLUB JUNE NEWS
E
ast Meon is a thriving local Garden Club which has a reciprocal arrangement with West Meon Garden Club which means that members from either Club can visit each others events which leads to a more diverse arrangement which benefits everyone. During the summer months, the East Meon Garden Club members generally go out, looking at other gardens, for instance in July we are going to West Dean gardens where we will explore the impressive collection of working Victiorian Glasshouses and walk through the 300’ pergolas well as generally exploring the Spring garden with its beautiful flint bridges. Before that of course, we have our own Gardens Open on the 24th June from 2pm to 5pm. There will also be the opportunity to purchase plants from the plant stall during the afternoon. We would normally write about a talk we had had at the Club, but because these are suspended during the summer months, perhaps it would be good to focus on other things horticultural. For instance, we are now pretty much assured that unwanted frosts will not catch us unawares and we are now drying off and storing daffodil bulbs We are now thinking about summer bedding plants, hanging baskets and the splitting up of existing plants. Talking of which, I have just divided up a rather large Hosta plant. These plants are most forgiving and if you need or want to split one, it’s very easy. Depending upon the size of the plant, use a sharp knife or a spade and make a decisive cut through the plant to the bottom of the roots. I have actually cut one plant into four!! Either pot up or replant into the ground. Be careful if you plant hostas in pots, as they can become very pot bound and getting them out of their container can be very difficult! There are many large national garden centres around us, but I do find it very rewarding to visit smaller independent garden centres, where the plants are grown locally and where you can sometimes find the ‘hidden gem’ which I did the other day. The little chap pictured at the top was sitting on its own and is so exquisite I was instantly captivated! It is called a Scilla Peruviana and is native to the Western Mediterranean region in Iberia. It is a perennial, herbaceous, clump forming bulb, growing between 15-30cms. It is almost evergreen with long waxy green leaves and has deep purple blue flowers. Flourishes in full sun.

Finally, I would like to introduce you to my ginger cat, Fred who is 20 years old and a bit rickety in his back legs! I bought him his own Nepeta plant (catmint) as an incentive for him to get off the sofa and go into the garden for a walk. If you own a cat you will know that nepeta is the equivalent of a large magnet and most cats, apart from eating the flowers, are quite partial to curling up in the centre of the plant which doesn’t do it much good. However, you can prevent this by placing an old plastic coated wire hanging basket upside down over the top of the plant! Words kindly written by Pamela Peacock of East Meon Garden Club

Food & Drink CRAB AND CUVEE AT HAMBLEDON VINEYARD
S
omething new for this year, we are pairing with Sallys Fish Camp ahead of Lymington Seafood Festival. Fizz and seafood are a perfect combo and we think we have found a perfect match in Sallys Brand and ours. A delicious and exciting day which will teach you about Wines and Crabs. We then put your knowledge to the test with a crab picnic style lunch with
half a bottle of Classic Cuvee to enjoy with your crab picnic overlooking the Vineyard.
The Day itself
We start the morning of at Midday - Prepare to jump right in to a fully laid out workshop. We start with the crab cracking. Sally will explain parts of the crab, where it came from, how to cook it, kill it humanely etc, this usually flags up loads of questions of course fuelled on a Glass of Hambledon. Once we’ve pulled, cracked, twisted and picked… don’t panic we will feed you soon, it doesn’t take long to then actually dress the crab and its ready for consuming! We then move on to the wine tasting, The Hambledon team will guide you through a talk of the vineyard and then as we are at a vineyard it seems silly not to try our wines. Head outside for a picnic style lunch overlooking the vineyard where you can eat your crab served on fresh sourdough washed down with a glass or two of Hambledon. This event is on Sunday 24th June from 12pm. The price is £55, and tickets are available from www.hambledonvineyard.co.uk/product/ 033fish-and-fizz Tel: 02392 632358 info@hambledonvineyard.co.uk www.hambledonvineyard.co.uk Hambledon Vineyard, Hambledon, PO7 4RY

Community CHASE KINGS FC - TRIPLE TRIUMPH
A
t the end of April Chase Kings Football Club played the Solent Churches League Cup Final against Cosham Baptist (the only team to have beaten Chase this season) at Romsey Town FC and won 3-2 in a thrilling encounter through goals from Matt Griffin and Ryan 'Spud' Lewis with a winning goal coming twenty minutes from time by players' player of the year Joe Bassett. The game heralded the chance for the Waltham Chase team linked with the Methodist Church to win the treble - all the competitions they had entered this season - and having won the top title in the Solent Churches League at the beginning of April, the two Cup Finals in one week posed a big challenge. But on the previous
Tuesday evening a group from the church went across in a mini-bus to Ringwood to see Chase win 2-1 with goals by Tom 'Tevez' Yates and Mark Shambrook against the formidable AB&C St. Peter's from Dorset and lift the Hampshire FA Faith Cup to secure the second trophy before the following Saturday's third against Cosham. Last season Chase went 424 minutes without scoring a goal, had never won a cup before or the top league in their history (since 2005) and therefore to do so this year has been a remarkable achievement.
Under new team management Co-Manager Neil Strange and 63 year old Steve Bridge in his rookie year as an adult team CoManager (after being the club photographer for five years) with some new players added to the existing hardcore, this was a tale of the unexpected! A triple triumph through the blessing of the Holy Trinity! Chase Kings FC would like to thank their official sponsor Neil's Electrical Services for their continued support of the club. commit time when most of the adult population have super-busy lives. Only when the kids have left home, the mortgage is paid and work pressures ease, do many people find the time and the energy to commit to volunteering. So, with this in mind, the Meon Valley Lions Club proposed one initiative at the recent Lions District Convention held in Portsmouth, that is designed to remove at least one objection to potential members. Our resolution (which was successfully adopted at the Convention) called for an individual’s £25 joining fee to be paid from the District’s own financial reserves, for the next twelve months. This means there’s never been a better (or at least cheaper) time to become a Lion. Why don’t you join Carole and Gary in putting something back into your local community and at the same time have some fun with like-minded people? There’s a calendar on our website listing our social and fund-raising programme – feel free to join us at an upcoming event, or one of our monthly pub socials to meet us and find out more.

fter an extended period during which the membership of Meon Valley Lions Club has held steady at 22, we are delighted to welcome two new members to our organisation. Carole Dash and Gary Martin were officially “badged-up” at our monthly business meeting in March, in a short ceremony overseen by President Dick Cowles and Vice-President Sheila Campbell. Both Gary and Carole have already attended a number of Lions’ social and fund-raising events in recent months, not only as a way of getting to know existing members, but also to find out more about Lions and the way we operate. As a club, we feel it’s important to ease members in gradually and not simply throw them in at the deep end. Becoming a Lion provides fun and companionship, but it also requires commitment as a volunteer and people need to go into this with their eyes open. To help with this induction process, we allocate a sponsor to each prospective, new member, a person who will subsequently take on the role of mentor for that individual. On this occasion, Dick Cowles sponsored Gary and Dinah Weberstadt sponsored Carole. Carole is no stranger to Lions – her father was a Lion for many years and her mother set up the Crawley Lionesses club. She is a manager responsible for company mergers, relocations and office fit-outs and is currently taking a career break to renovate residential properties (seems like a bit of a busman’s holiday!). Carole’s latest DIY-SOS scheme is in Hedge End and no doubt her organisational skills and enthusiasm for project management, will come in really handy on some of our fund-raising projects. Gary encountered Lions through taking up an invitation to our PSA prostate cancer screening event at Bishop’s Waltham, last August. He has been retired for just over three years and now lives in Wickham. Gary worked previously for one of the largest engineering and construction conglomerates in the UK which, in its day, designed and built ships, bridges, offshore oil rigs and chemical, polymer and pharmaceutical production plants around the world. Since retiring, Gary has enjoyed vacations, walking, reading and helping his wife Sue with the grandchildren – but with Lions he’s looking for something that will provide a different kind of personal fulfilment. This can be arranged Gary! It’s evident to a number of the older Lions that Carole and Gary’s skills are highly complementary and could well be put to good use, for example, building a new sleigh for Santa in 2018! Membership recruitment is a major challenge and focus for Lions clubs across the UK. It’s difficult finding new members willing to 58
Our thanks go to Lion Pete Meadows for making such a splendid job of organising our Charter Night dinner at Banks' Bistro in Bishops Waltham in March. A great time was had by all concerned - even President Dick Cowles, when presented with a splendid new Lion-hat! Goes nicely with the DJ don't you think?

Lighting-up Time
T
BY CLAIRE THURLOW here was a time when I lived in Vermont, one of the smallest states in the USA, located in the north-east of the country just below the Canadian border. One of the pleasures of summer was to sit in the screened-in porch, enjoying the evening air, but safe from incessant mosquitoes, and wait for the fireflies to come out. Imagine a gnat wearing an LED light and you’ve got a firefly. Only once night had fallen did the fireflies appear, dozens of dancing specks of light which lit the pitch-black garden like a party of Tinkerbells. You’re unlikely to see ‘fireflies’ in England unless your neighbour has strung fairy-lights in the trees, but you might see a close relative – the glow-worm. Unlike those creatures where the male of the species uses a bit of flash to beguile a mate, with glow-worms it’s the female who goes all out to attract attention. While the males are winged with hard, beetle-like backs, the females look like larvae – soft as a marshmallow and wingless. So far, so unremarkable. But as the female spends her short life confined to a few metres of ground, and her day-time look is a discreet, subdued brown, Nature has given her a clever way to stand out. Thanks to a chemical reaction between oxygen in the air and enzymes in the glowworm’s body, she can activate a ‘lantern’ in her abdomen and literally light up her rear end. This vivid green, pulsing bioluminescence can be switched on and off at will, either to attract a mate or to startle enemies. Once a mate has been found, eggs are often laid on open ground, and the newly hatched larvae must crawl to the shelter of vegetation with due haste. With luck, they’ll reach a ready food supply of slugs and snails. Even the
60
larvae can manage a brief glow, although it’s rather feeble compared to their mother, whose light can be seen up to 50 metres away. Sadly, the population of glow-worms across Europe has declined over the last 70 years, but they can still be found in England on the chalky grassland of the Downs.Their habitat also includes hedgerows, railway embankments, heathlands and cliffs. People lucky enough to live in areas of low light pollution may come across them when walking in the countryside after dark. But they’ll have to be patient, as glow-worms often don’t show up until after 10pm in mid-summer. Artificial light confuses the males who mistake it for a possible female, heading for lampposts and security lights instead of potential mates. On the bright side (no apology for the pun!), in recent years glow-worms have been spotted in churchyards, gardens, parks and campsites across the south. One farmer even reported seeing one on the back of a sheep and another behind a pig’s ear. There have been sightings in villages around Winchester, as well as St Catherine’s Hill, East Meon and the New Forest. Stockbridge Down, Burlesdon and Havant Thicket also seem to be regular haunts. Whether this summer will be a success for the glowworms remains to be seen, but given suitable, undisturbed habitat and a healthy diet of slugs and snails, we can be optimistic. They can be seen from late May to September, but are most visible in June and July. There is even a world Firefly Day on July 7, so I will be out with my torch checking the log-pile, in the hope of catching a glimpse of the luminous glow-worm.
