Winchester Heritage Open Days 2018

T

13th to 16th September

his September, Heritage Open Days, the nation’s favourite heritage festival, returns to Hampshire with four fabulous days in which to discover, celebrate and experience local history and architecture.

With more than 100 events to choose from, Winchester Heritage Open Days provide a wonderful day out for the whole family and every event is completely FREE! Some you can just turn up to but others need to be booked in advance. This year, our Extraordinary Women theme ties in with the centenary of some women gaining the right to vote but it also allows us to shine a spotlight on some of Hampshire’s own incredible women whose achievements and stories have sometimes been forgotten or overshadowed. The festival programme is now out and, not surprisingly, tickets are already flying out the door for special one-off events as well as the much-coveted behind-the scenes tours of buildings not normally open to the public. Do visit our website now and book early to avoid disappointment. Organised and run entirely by volunteers, the festival relies on the goodwill and generosity of many businesses, organisations and individuals. We are immensely grateful to all of them and particularly to our lead sponsor, Winchester College for its ongoing support and for opening its doors to so many wonderful events this year. However, the festival’s future depends on being able to meet its running costs. We are delighted to announce that Michael Wood will host our special fundraising event on the eve of the festival and chair a discussion with a panel of eminent historians on The Legacy of Alfred: the Anglo-Saxons and the birth of England. We do hope you will be able to join us and show your support. We look forward to welcoming you to Winchester Heritage Open Days. Some of this year’s highlights…

Alresford Show B

TICHBORNE PARK, ALRESFORD

ack in the Spring, a famous weekly farming magazine ran an article about the surging popularity of agricultural shows. This raised a few eyebrows here at the Alresford Agricultural Show HQ where (and we hesitate to sound smug) we count our blessings every year as we survey the beautiful Tichborne Park on the first Saturday in September; it’s a splendid rural scene, and we fully expect to see it once again this year, on the first of the month.

It will be a magnificent sight. The parkland will be chock full of farm machinery – everything from the shiniest modern sat-nav guided combine harvester to vintage kit that predates GPS by a dozen decades. Some of the old machines will be sweetly putt-putting their way round the ring, some rural behemoths will be blacking out the hoped-for Autumnal sun as they throb their way round the arena. There will be farm livestock of all sorts: some of it big, some of it small, some of it old, some of it a more recent arrival in the English countryside. Each and every animal will be polished and pampered, ready for the show ring, accompanied by a proud handler just desperate to answer your questions. The quieter rural crafts like horticulture and beekeeping will be well represented, too – horticulture, bee-keeping and a hundred others tucked away in a peaceful corner of the show ground.

8

You might not want peace and quiet. You might to feast on local food, quaff local ale, have an undignified boogie to a couple of bands, learn to juggle, cuddle a beagle and bet on a ferret race – if that’s your idea of the perfect day out, it’ll all be there.

But most importantly, our visitors will be there. If the Met Office Muppets are right, we farmers will have finished harvest thanks to the promised long hot summer. We’ll be there, having a good moan if harvest was bad, and probably doing the same if it was good (it’s what we do best, after all).

Best of all, though, will be farming’s customers – those who eat our bread, drink our beer, and enjoy our milk and meat. So come along and join them, as Summer quietly turns to Autumn, and enjoy a warm welcome to a little glimpse into our farming world. Get your tickets soon though; something tells me the Alresford Show will be as popular as ever. Tickets prices: Adult £15, Senior £13, Children 11-16 £5. Buy before 25 August and save £2 per ticket. Tickets available online from: www.alresfordshow.co.uk or Six West - Alresford, Mole Country Stores - Winchester & Wickham, Bishops Waltham Post Office, Bishop's Waltham & Alton Herald Offices.

BISHOP’S WALTHAM MUSEUM

HAMPSHIRE HILLS BEACH CRUSIER: PETERSFIELD TO HAYLING ISLAND

I

n the ancient farmhouse in the grounds of Bishop’s Waltham Palace, is a little gem, the Bishop’s Waltham Museum. The farmhouse survives from medieval times and is the only building of the Palace with a roof. It is also home to Bishop’s Waltham Museum, a charity run entirely by volunteers who look after a great collection of local artefacts and photos.

A

Our museum welcomes visitors on Saturdays and Sundays from May to September, between 12pm and 4pm, and we would love you to come and visit us! You will be met by two of our volunteers who give up a couple of hours a month to help us open to the public with a different exhibition every year.

new twist on the classic sportive, the Hampshire Hills Beach Cruiser is a sportive with the atmosphere of a summer club run to the beach. This features a short route (62km) and a full route (93km).

Starting from Petersfield in the shadow of Butser Hill, the route winds you up over the mighty South Downs, then sweeps through the pick of the twisting country lanes to the south coast, delivering you to the sea front at Hayling Island. Once you hit the beach, you can relax, enjoy the sea breeze, and grab a bite and cuppa at the beach-side checkpoint. Our team will be there with a support station that acts as the finish for the Short ride, or your midway checkpoint for the Full Route. That’s it; if you rode the Short Route, your riding is done. All that’s left to do is to enjoy the beach, maybe arrange to meet family or friends to spend a few hours before giving you a lift back to your car or back home. If you’re riding the Full Route, after your beach stop you’ll get back on the bike to make your way back up country to finish at the event base at Petersfield (where you started). In the spirit of the chilled theme of the day, we’re being nice to you though. The route back is a little shorter and more direct than the ride out; nobody wants to have the bulk of their ride in front of them after a cake stop or lunch at the beach! Oh, and yes you will be timed for this ride, but the time you spend at the beach stop won’t be included in your overall time. Just make sure that you check in and out through the timing station and we’ll deduct your beach time from your ride time in the final results. After all, a good day on the bike means only being in a hurry when you want to be, right? This event takes place on August 11th, starting from 9am at Petersfield School, Cranford Road, Petersfield, GU32 3LU For more information and booking: www.southernsportive. com/hampshire-hills-beach-cruiser/ 14

For those wanting to spend a full day at the West Meon Festival there is a “Coffee Concert” in the morning, which includes Elgar’s stunning Violin Sonata written in 1918. A specially discounted “Sunday Pass” gives admission to both concerts as well as Paul Guinery’s talk – and there are excellent local pubs for lunch. Full details of all the festival programmes – which opens on Friday 14 September with a concert of “Viennese Treasures” and includes an informal children’s concert and late night folk band raising funds for the Rosemary Foundation – can be found at www.westmeonmusic. co.uk. Ticket prices start from £12 and include refreshments with generous discounts for accompanied children and students, while festival pass options offer further savings. Tickets are available online at the website or by post from the Box Office, Walnut Cottage, Hampton Hill, Swanmore SO32 2QN.

y September 1918 allied victories – helped by the arrival of American troops – were beginning to suggest that an end to four years of war was finally in sight. Within weeks Germany’s allies began to sue for peace and the carnage across Europe finally ended on 11 November. One hundred years to the day after the last airborne German bombing raid of the War, on 16 September on Paris, the West Meon Music Festival will be commemorating the end of the First World War with a special concert of songs, instrumental pieces and readings created during the period by composers and writers, many of whom served in the War. At the festival’s Sunday afternoon concert, the Primrose Piano Quartet – who founded the festival in 2011 – will be joined by internationally renowned tenor James Gilchrist who will be singing some of the best loved works from the period. The programme includes settings of poems from A E Housman’s “A Shropshire Lad” composed by both George Butterworth – who was killed in 1916 during the Battle of the Somme – and Ralph Vaughan Williams, who had begun the war driving ambulances in France and ended it as a lieutenant in the Royal Artillery.

hat better way to spend an August evening than conquering the hills of Hundred Acres. We have put together a challenging, yet rewarding XC course for you run, just as you please, as slow or as fast as you like. It's definitely not flat, but if it was easy, everyone would be doing it. It's first come, first served as places are limited. There is also a post-race meet at the nearby Roebuck Inn for a cold beer! All runners will get a FREE 'run-dry' running shirt

James Gilchrist has a busy performing schedule in the UK and overseas and the Primrose is delighted that he has been able to include the West Meon Music Festival in his packed calendar. Some may have heard James in June at a performance on Britten’s War Requiem in Winchester Cathedral, while his latest CDs include collections of songs by Parry and Vaughan Williams.

Race Date: Wednesday 15 August 2018 - 7pm Entry Closing Date: Sunday 12 August 2018 - 12am Current Price: £12.00/£8 Rural Running Club members

Joining him at the concert will be former Radio 3 presenter, Paul Guinery, who will be reading some of the best-loved poems written by the War’s poets, including Wilfred Owen and Rupert Brooke.

Clear Dentistry welcomes the award winning Luke Hutchings What aspects of dentistry are you particularly interested in? Undertaking a thorough and comprehensive approach to oral health is my main passion. With preventative techniques and a balanced approach we can prevent a lot of things from ever happening and also turn the clock back when required. How would you describe Clear Dentistry? Clear is a forward thinking proactive practice. All the staff are trained to the highest levels and all the treatments are evidence based to ensure patients are getting the best care possible. There is a real emphasis on involving the patient in their planning be it via pictures of digital imaging and this journey of co discovery is really empowering for all. The equipment and materials used are the best quality and this combination allows us to provide wonderful results for our patients.

A

ward winning dentist and board member of the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry has joined Clear Dentistry in Bishops Waltham. Further to Clear Dentistry’s successes of our own we are delighted to grow and strengthen our team with another fantastic dentist.

Finally tell us a bit about yourself Out of work I have always been fit and active and participated in various sports over the years, healthy body healthy mind springs to mind, currently I am predominantly doing crossfit and some climbing.

Until recently Luke worked in Alresford but has relocated to be able to work at Clear Dentistry as he wanted a practice that matched his values and beliefs when it comes to providing comprehensive modern dentistry.

I feel lucky to have found a base in Hampshire for my wife and beautiful two daughters, both of whom are the absolute apple of daddy’s eye; and run circles around me most days.

What made you relocate to Clear Dentistry? The practice is state of the art utilising equipment such as digital scanner and 3d printers that is something not everywhere has invested in. Its recent award of The Best Practice in the UK at The Dentistry Awards says it all really and I wanted to be a part of that. 18

What made you want to become a dentist? I was fortunate that I lived next door to the local dentist in the village I grew up in so I always saw trips to the dentist as a positive experience. I also saw the difference he made to the local community and felt inspired by this positive role model. As a profession it appeals to my inner nerd as it has its basis very much in science, a subject I always loved; but it also allows me to express my artist side in creating natural seamless fillings and crowns.

ne of the world’s most luxurious trains will be setting out from Winchester in September taking passengers on a slap-up, champagne-all-the-way trip to Cornwall. The Northern Belle – seven renovated and ornately-decorated Pullman carriages hauled by a vintage diesel locomotive – is Britain’s answer to the famed Orient Express. Train manager Sandra Jones describes it as “recapturing a bygone era of 1930s-style rail travel at its most glamorous”. And she promises people “can expect glamour, fun and a dash of adventure” as it heads for Par station on the morning of Friday, September 14. Passengers, who will tuck into cocktails and a three-course brunch on the outward journey, can then choose between visiting the amazing Eden Project or spending the day by the beach in Padstow. They will be welcomed back on board with a champagne reception at teatime before being served a five-course dinner with wine, followed by coffee and petit fours. Train manager Sandra said: “The atmosphere on board is always fantastic. The laughter, chat and fun flows all day – just like the champagne!”. The train leaves Winchester at 7.30am and then picks up passengers at Southampton at 8. It is scheduled to arrive back in Winchester at 22.30. Fares start at £305 return. Hampshire Mum: It’s All Kicking Off!

I

BY SANDRA PAGAN

won't deny it's been an 'interesting' month! Let's just refer to the old adage about friends and finding out who they are, and leave it there. There seemed to be a lot of aggression around, perhaps it was the heat, but whether driving, sitting in coffee shops or skipping through social media, there was a propensity for unnecessary rage. I never thought I would hear myself say it, but thank God for the football! If you are old enough to remember the Sixties, you may recall football matches with endless reports of violence on the terraces and running battles with rival fans. Mercifully all of that seems to have fallen out of fashion for the most part. On the afternoon of July 7th, in an England basking in the heat and brassed off with Brexit, there was a really great vibe. England had actually got through to the quarter finals! It seemed we were all united and believed it was 'Coming Home'. Now don't get me wrong, it's not because I'm a woman that I've never been especially interested in the beautiful game. I realise that footie is gender-neutral, but it's simply never appealed to me personally. But that said, I become a raving lunatic (and somewhat of an armchair expert) when it comes to the England games. Born of a love of David Beckham (why isn't he still playing?), I have quickly grasped how the press treat the England team: build them up when they win 6-1

24

against a team of postmen from Panama, and knock them down when we lose 0-1 to a group of people who love expensive chocolate. But on the afternoon of the 7th, we Pagans had a house full, gathered around the telly like a tribe around a fire. Suddenly we knew all the rules. When it wasn't a foul and when it certainly was. (Are you blind, Ref?) The off-side rule was no longer a mystery to any of us, except, that is, the actual linesman, and our administering of yellow cards was prolific. Then two goals!! The roof, as they say, came off. The pundits had decided England had already won the cup and that the match with Croatia was a mere five-a-side knock- around, all bets were on and we wondered if Gareth Southgate would sport a Union Jack waistcoat for the final. Football, obviously, is a very powerful game with the ability to pull a whole nation together in a common cause. Who would have thought that eleven, (rather overpaid if we're honest), young men trying to get a ball into a large net for ninety odd minutes could inspire that amount of fervour? Whether you're a football fan or not, that sense of patriotism and collective excitement can be contagious. Even if at times it's stressful to watch England play, it's a welcome change from the pervasive air of negativity. Personally, I could do with a World Cup every year! Sandra Pagan

Community Professional COMMUNITY HEROES: MEON VALLEY

WHAT TO DO WITH A LOVED

ARCHAEOLOGICAL HERITAGE GROUP

ONES ASHES?

W

Photo shows John Snow, Alison Smalley and Joan Terry of the Meon Valley Archaeological Heritage Group

Y

ou could travel along the A32 at Exton a hundred times and still have no idea that you’d passed through the centre of an archaeological treasure but, thanks to the Meon Valley Archaeological Heritage Group, we now know a lot more about life here 2,000 years ago.

Scattering

The remains of a hall found on one side of the road in 1980 now sit in the British Museum and were first thought to be from a farm building. However following the discovery of Roman coins by detectorists in the field on the other side of the road, a geophysical survey in 2015 revealed a much bigger complex and a curious hexagonal building. Thanks to the discovery of a Dea Nutrix figurine goddess during a dig between 2016 and 2017 we now know that this building was a Roman temple.

Put simply this is placing the ashes somewhere permanent such as a cemetery or above ground chamber (columbarium). This particularly suits those of a religious faith, those with family graves, or those who like the idea of stability and tradition.

The dig also revealed that the first building found was in fact 30m long, as well as a bath house with the remains of a plaster stucco – students from Winchester University are now trying to put the scene back together. A £1,754 grant from the South Downs National Park’s Sustainable Communities Fund supported the costs of the professional surveys and getting a report written up. Find out more at www.saxonsinthemeonvalley.org.uk

Scatter them in the person’s favourite place. Be aware some grounds such as cemeteries or private land require permission to scatter ashes. Do it carefully and remember to stand upwind!

Bury / Inter them

At home

Many feel their loved ones ashes should be close to them. You may want to consider the container they are in, particularly if they are on display

Made shiny!

Want some bling to remember your loved one? Ashes can be turned into jewellery, hand-blown glass or stained glass that you can appreciate and admire for a long time.

Plant them

The ashes are mixed with nutrients and placed in an urn used to grow a tree in the persons memory.

hen I joined the company in 2005 we had a cupboard with ashes dating back to 1970…and we still do. In fact in 2018 we now have 2 cupboards. 73% of all funerals A H Freemantle completed last year were cremations. For some, the ashes of a loved one hold no meaning while for others, they are the very embodiment of the person who has died. If you have chosen a cremation funeral the next step is to decide on what to do with the ashes. So here are some ideas for you.

Some tattoo artists will mix a portion of your loved one's ashes with ink to create a memorial tattoo you can keep with you for life.

With a bang

Loved ones ashes can be placed in a firework for a colourful / loud send off. In America a company called ‘Holy Smoke’ will even turn ashes into ammunition! Losing a loved one is often a gut-wrenching experience and it can be difficult to figure out the right way to remember them and honour their last wishes if known. But whether you’re considering creating a working vinyl record complete with cover or sending them into space, please don’t leave them in your funeral directors cupboard. ingredients, local employment and the local community are all key to our business. Working closely with Hampshire Fare has supported these elements of our business plan and we are delighted to be able to give back to the organisation and the other members through corporate sponsorship.”

UPHAM GROUP KEEPS IT LOCAL

Upham Group has expanded rapidly over the past five years and now has sixteen pubs predominantly across Hampshire which include The Hawk Inn in Amport, The Peat Spade in Longstock, The White Hart in Overton, The Running Horse in Littleton and The Thomas Lord in West Meon. Several of these locations have undergone recent refurbishment and expansion. The Thomas Lord now boasts luxury outdoor guest cabins whilst The Mill at Gordleton has developed its event space and new orangery to expand the dining room. All Upham beers are brewed by the group’s experienced team at their Hampshire brewery. The recent focus has been the launch of a premium craft beer called UB5. David Butcher, Director at Upham Pub Company, commented: “The growth in new craft beers has been exceptional and we wanted to give our customers something brewed in Hampshire to rival the new trends in brewing. The new UB5 is brewed with 5 hops, 5 malts, is 5%, fermented for 5 weeks and served at 5 degrees. The beer divides the line between cask ale and lager and its strong combination of flavours is appealing to a new market of customers.”

U

pham Group has worked alongside Hampshire Fare for five years to support the local food group’s activity in the county. As strong supporters of local, the dynamic pub company recognises the value of the food group’s work. Chris Phillips, CEO of Upham Pub Company commented: “Local

HAMPSHIRE PEOPLE

The Forum talks with James Martin

H

e lives in both Yorkshire and Hampshire, and now runs The Kitchen, a restaurant and cookery school at the prestigious Chewton Glen Hotel in the New Forest.

Does James enjoy the pressure of cooking live on television? “I love the pressure, it’s no different to working in a professional kitchen. Cooking is a craft you can never master and that’s what makes you strive to be better. For example, last night’s service in the restaurant, (Chewton Glen), was fantastic, really busy. All the customers were happy, so the front of house and back staff were happy too. When it all goes well you can’t believe you’re lucky enough to be doing this job.” When choosing ingredients for the restaurant does James support local producers? “Yes, of course, where possible. But we are cooking for large numbers of people all the time – it was one hundred people last night, so if I need two hundred halibut then I go where I can source best quality product.”

F EAT U R E I SSU E 35 | AU G U ST

James Martin needs no introduction. As restaurateur, celebrity chef, author of seventeen books and host of at least eighteen television travel and cookery programs, he is one the nation’s favourite personalities.

Does James despair of our dietary excesses of processed foods? “No, not really. Look at the difference in the food culture compared to thirty years ago. People have so much choice now and it’s up to them to make their decisions.”

“I came to Hampshire twenty-three years ago; I love the coastline, and especially Beaulieu and the Isle of Wight.” From his native Yorkshire, James left Scarborough Technical College and went directly to Hostellerie de Plaisance in France, one of the many Michelinstarred restaurants James has worked in. Was that move a real culture shock? “No, not really. I had been going to France on holiday with my parents for years. Even at the age of ten I was in the French kitchens helping out. I wanted to cook so badly! I left school with one ‘O’ Level in art, but it didn’t matter - cooking was my passion.” That passion served James well. On his return to the UK, he joined Gerard Basset and Robin Hutson, founders of Winchester’s Hotel du Vin, as Head Chef. He was just twenty-two. Can James recollect the most memorable meal he has eaten? “I think The Waterside Inn at Bray. It has Michelin threestar status and is better than anywhere. It’s excellent in both front and back of house.” I asked James for whom he’d like to cook if he had the choice. Despite the fact he must have a wide range of celebrity customers, his choice was heartfelt. “My late grandmother. She was a fantastic cook and passed all her knowledge on to my mother. Sunday lunch was always for ten or twelve people with everything home cooked, the most fantastic and memorable meals. You can’t beat a good roast! My grandmother was also a huge fan of ‘Strictly Come Dancing,’ so she would have loved to see me on that!”

James is well known for his love of cars. Would he describe himself as a ‘petrol-head chef ’? He laughs, “ Yes quite possibly! I learnt to fly at Goodwood in West Sussex and still remember my old Mini! We may well do some more travel food programs when I drive around in a nice car. We’ll see!” So what next for James Martin? “God knows!! I’d be lost without my mother, my phone and my PA, that’s for sure! But listen, I feel very privileged to do my job, I’m so lucky. If I can inspire youngsters to cook then that makes me happy.” James is preparing a meal as we chat, so what’s for supper? “Roast pork-like I say you can’t beat a good roast!” GG 35

entral Winchester’s regeneration has been given the green light with the highly anticipated adoption of a Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) for the area. The SPD incorporates the views of Winchester’s residents, businesses, students and visitors and follows extensive engagement and consultation throughout the district over the last 18 months. The vision for the Central Winchester Regeneration (CWR) area is for the delivery of a mixed-use, pedestrian friendly quarter that is distinctly Winchester and supports a vibrant retail, cultural and heritage offer which is set within an exceptional public realm and incorporates the imaginative re-use of existing buildings.

NEW CONSTRUCTION, BARN CONVERSIONS & OAK FRAMING REPAIRS OVER 40 YEARS EXPERIENCE.

Together with the Local Plan, the SPD will be a material consideration for any Central Winchester planning applications which will ensure aspirations for the area are preserved. The Council will be working with a range of experts and other landowners in the area to incrementally bring the regeneration vision for Central Winchester to fruition. Throughout the regeneration, the Council will be looking for short and medium term development opportunities to ensure it continues to thrive for residents, tourists and businesses. Some of the improvements include: • Improving the overall look and feel of the public realm, including the Broadway • Refurbishing the Antiques Market to meet the needs of the anticipated locally based children’s theatre company tenant • Redeveloping Coitbury House into modern office accommodation • Negotiating with businesses interested in using vacant office and shop space until the buildings are needed for redevelopment • Working with Winchester School of Art to incorporate artwork on the site, including a mural at the Bus Station. In addition, the eminent archaeologists behind the guidance for CWR’s approach to archaeology will be returning to Winchester to participate in a series of events to enable people to hear more about the Archaeology Advisory Panel’s report and recommendations.

Garden LAWN ANTS

L

awn ants can be a real nuisance, let’s take a look at what can be done to reduce their numbers. Ants, like bees, live in a colony. An ant colony is made up of one or more fertile, egg-laying females and many hundreds, if not thousands of worker ants. The job of the queen, once she has mated, is to stay in the nest and lay eggs. The workers care for the queen and her eggs, protecting and feeding them. House-keeping the nest and foraging for food.

specialist action against garden pests is certainly justified. Many gardeners attempt to deal with ants themselves and often do this with traps, powder or boiling water. All of which is relatively unsuccessful and runs the risk of killing more grass than it does ants. Remembering that the colony exists because of the egg-laying queen, unless she is eradicated then the colony will continue to function. Surface applied powders and traps are doing little more than killing worker ants. The queen continues to lay eggs and the many hundreds of workers still in existence continue to feed them. How do lawn-care professionals manage a lawn ant problem? Throughout the summer period I visit many home owners who are frustrated by the damage ants are causing in their lawns. We use a specialist insecticide mixed with a wetting agent applied to each nest as a drench. The wetting agent helps the pesticide penetrate deep within the ant’s nest and to spread laterally through the soil – maximising the chances of reaching and killing the queen.

The eggs are laid deep down in the nest, in a specialised brood chamber. The tiny larvae are fed a liquid diet by the worker ants and when this stage of development is complete they pupate before becoming adult ants – and the circle of life continues. At certain times of year some species of ants produce winged females en-mass which fly off in search of a mate and once mated then find a suitable place to establish their own colony. You’ve probably witnessed this phenomenon yourself, typically on a hot and humid summer’s day. Why are ants in lawns a problem? Most ants in the garden are more of a nuisance than a damaging pest. However, in the UK a number of garden ant species will attack when under threat. Whilst this is unlikely to cause anything more than an unpleasant reaction, it can certainly be enough to spoil a picnic or make you think twice before sitting on the lawn with bare legs. It can be particularly unpleasant for small children wanting to play outside. Other than their bites or the spray of their acid, the other major concern that I come across related to ants in lawns is the damage they cause by bringing soil to the surface whilst excavating their nests. This causes two main problems – the first is that over time their excavations make the lawn uneven and cause ant-hills which are easily scalped as you mow the grass. Secondly the soil they bring to the surface is often flattened under foot or when mowing and can cause the grass to die back through lack of light. In both instances the result is a bare area ideal for the germination of weed seeds or moss spores. Killing lawn ants As gardeners we should be doing all we can to work with nature and not be heavy handed in our approach. However, focussed and

40

Dealing with ant hills If you do have ants bringing soil to the surface of your lawn then try to redistribute the soil with a broom or besom before mowing. If their excavations have made your lawn uneven this can be repaired by cutting and peeling back the turf before making levels good again and treading the turf back in place. Remember to water it in well. Attempts of getting rid of lawn ants are not as simple as you may think and you may actually make the situation worse. Asking a lawn care professional to help with the problem and ensuring any insecticides are applied safely will get the results you are looking for. Please remember that anyone using pesticides in your garden on your behalf must be licenced. If they are not then you are both breaking the law. Ian Kenyon owns Shrekfeet Lawn and Garden Services. REPORT FROM EAST MEON GARDENS

PETERSFIELD SUMMER FESTIVAL:

OPEN DAY

AUGUST BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND

O

n the 24th June, the Village opened up some of its beautiful gardens to benefit The Rosemary Foundation which received a cheque £900.00. One of the gardens being opened was ‘Well Cottage’, an Almshouse which was being opened for the very first time.

The Village is very proud of its Almshouses with their distinctive solid flint walls and sandstone porches which were built in the 19th century. Almshouses were established from the 10th century with the oldest still in existence being in Winchester, which dates back to 1132. They were built to provide homes for impecunious, elderly and distressed members of the community. ‘Well Cottage’, which as its name suggests, has a Well in the front garden and this was the main source of water for the Village at the time. The present owner moved into her Cottage around two years ago and the villagers love her colourful displays on those special days, i.e Saints Days, Armistice, longest/shortest days/ Halloween, which have featured relevant items ie, daffodils and leeks for St David’s Day, thistles for St Andrews and so on. Her garden is planted for scent, Jasmine at this time of year is simply beautiful, lavender and dianthus, all assail the senses. She has a special ‘Fairy Grotto’ for her Grandchildren which is a little ‘hide-away, decorated with little sparkly fairies and sunflowers. The latest addition to her garden is a Coprosma ‘Tequila Sunrise’. This is a pyramidal shrub with dense foliage like colourful gemstones, which intensifies in winter to brilliant orange and red and is evergreen.

F

fter the awesome success of the recent Petersfield Spring Festival, the Petersfield Summer Festival will be back again in full force this year with hopefully a repeat of the sun filled Bank Holiday weekend last year. The sun was out, the cars were out, the Empire was out and the smiles were out with young and old enjoying themselves with everything on offer and this year will be no different. Hometown Festivals will be celebrating another Great British summer this August Bank Holiday weekend and we hope you are able to join us for a while to enjoy it in Petersfield Town centre. For the eighth successful year the free-to-enter Petersfield Summer Festival will take place on the busy streets and market square in the centre of Petersfield from 25th - 27th August. It will feature three days of top quality live music with the festival starting on the Saturday evening at 7pm followed by two full days of fantastic varied market stall trading featuring some of the best food and products available from the local area as well as awesome family entertainment and activities. Over the course of the weekend, we will have the return of a whole host of classic cars on display during Sunday as the Petersfield Post & Herald Summer Motor Show return to delight the Petersfield crowds. On the Bank Holiday Monday, the Solent Renegades (http://www. solent-renegades.co.uk) will join us again to show off their awesome vehicles and every time we have them along their numbers grow and the variety of cars they bring along continues to amaze people. Also on Monday,The Force Festival will return this year to transform Petersfield into a Star Wars haven and we look at having even more characters attending than the 25 we had last year! For more information about the festival visit: www.petersfieldfest.com/wp/index.php/summer-festival/

The Village was delighted to be able to welcome, not just locals, but visitors from Australia, Scotland, Canada and even a lady who was on a cruise ship which had docked in Southampton! The Australians were somewhat bemused as they are used to huge, wide open spaces, and couldn’t understand our narrow, twisty lanes and small gardens which were described as ‘how cute’, ‘how tiny’ and ‘how neat’!! To end, this is Fred, you met him in the last East Meon Garden Club report. Here he is on his 20th birthday during his daily constitutional, just checking out the geraniums which for the purists among you, is the Rozanne variety which is excellent for dry shade, deadhead regularly if you can and it will flower throughout Summer until the first frost. It will light up a dull space and bring a smile to your face! 42

ebbie and Dolly Walker are getting on their bikes and taking positive action in the fight against breast, ovarian and cervical cancers. Debbie who has just handed over her role as President of Bishop’s Waltham Rotary Club is now tackling her next challenge along with her Niece, Dolly, they are part of an amazing group of women tackling the ninth Women V Cancer challenge. They will be challenging themselves as part of a women-only team of cyclists riding through rural Rajasthan in India to support the work of three charities: Breast Cancer Care, Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust and Ovarian Cancer Action. Previous Women V Cancer cycle challenges in Kenya, India, Cuba, China, Africa,Vietnam & Cambodia, the UK and Brazil have raised over £9 million for the three charities. Debbie previously took part in the Kenya, China and Brazil rides and has raised over £10,000 in the past and for Dolly this is her first ride challenge. Women of all ages and all cycling abilities from across the UK are invited to join the adventure in November 2018. The group will cycle around 450kms in just 5 days – both on and off road – experiencing rural India at its most raw and colourful. It will be a journey full of fun, friendship and incredible support as women of all ages and from all walks of life come together to challenge themselves for a great cause. As well as training hard Debbie and Dolly need to raise a minimum of £3,200 each to support the work of the Women V Cancer charities and they are asking local people and companies to help them reach that target. To pledge your support for Debbie and Dolly, either post your sponsorship donation, made payable to Women V Cancer (CAF), to Lavender Cottage, 9a Upper Basingwell Street, Bishop’s Waltham, SO32 1AL or telephone 07785 577801. The Gregarious Green Woodpecker BY CLAIRE THURLOW

M

uch as I enjoy a sunny British summer, after weeks without rain my garden is looking rather sorry for itself. The lawn is parched, the borders are wilting and even the stinging nettles are drooping. The water butts are drained and, if the weather forecast is to be trusted, the dry spell is set to continue. Of course, there are alternative ways of predicting rain – seaweed, pine cones, cows lying down – and woodpeckers. The green woodpecker is also known as the ‘Rain Bird’ because some claim that it becomes louder and more insistent when rain is imminent. The Druids believed these birds had dowsing skills and used them as water diviners. History makes no mention of their success rate! The green woodpecker is certainly noisy, with a raucous ‘ha-ha-ha’ call that sounds like the maniacal laughter of a pantomime villain, although ‘Laughing Betsy’ is another nickname. It won’t win any competitions for birdsong, but the woodpecker uses this cackle to keep in touch with its mate or other family members and to defend its territory. If you see one, there’s likely to be another nearby, so you may hear a dialogue of bossy ‘yaffling’ going on. Loud it may be, but the green woodpecker is far less likely to drum incessantly on tree trunks than its great spotted cousin, although it will excavate holes in broadleaved trees to make a nest site. If you sit quietly in a garden, nature inevitably comes to you, although in the case of wasps, I’d rather they left me alone. On a Sunday afternoon, I’m lazing with a book in a deck-chair, when a green woodpecker lands just metres from my feet. This one’s a juvenile, with streakier plumage than that of the adult, and appears to have not yet learned to be nervous of humans. It’s soon

48 48

joined by an adult bird, who lands further away and calls sharply to the youngster. Junior shrieks a reply and takes steady hops, dragging its tail across the lawn to greet the waiting parent. I’ve seen it in airborne, but right now it seems to prefer hopping to flying. The adult is olive green with paler underparts, but the camouflage effect is broken by a yellow rump, scarlet skull cap and black ‘mask’ which gives the face a sinister look. Both male and female have a black ‘moustache’, but the male has blood-red feathers in his, as if he’s gashed his face. With its stocky build, stiff tail and dagger-like bill, this is the largest of the British woodpeckers, and is widespread across the country, spotted in woods and farms as well as urban and suburban grassy areas. This year they’ve been regular visitors to the garden, spiking the lawn in their constant search for ants. They are expert at seeking them out, not just on the grass, but poking into the cracks between paving stones, around the base of bird-baths and planters, investigating any places where a dribble of water may have drawn thirsty insects. Ant eggs make an equally good feast, and the green woodpecker cleans them up with its long, sticky tongue. They are particularly keen on a newly mown lawn, finding and re-visiting anthills among the moss and the daisies. There must have been lean times during the winter, especially when the Beast from the East arrived, but they are adaptable and have been seen taking berries, and chipping away at tree bark to gather insects. The green woodpecker is a welcome guest, with its colourful plumage and unmistakeable laughter, and, of course, its endless appetite for ants.

HAMBLE VALLEY ROTARY HAS A NEW PRESIDENT FOR 2018-19: JULIA WRIGHT

BISHOP'S WALTHAM ROTARY NEWS

E

very year, the President of these clubs change. Last year Debbie Walker, a retired local business person, was the first female President of the BW club. During her year she presided over further growth in the club taking our membership to 36 members. Just in case you were wondering: the ratio of men to women is now 9 to 28; and more ladies in the pipeline! At the end of June, Debbie presided over her last BW Rotary meeting, inaugurating John Natt as the next President, along with Linda Treveil as President for the following year and Mandy Tourle for the subsequent year. Above is a picture of the mass inauguration: Debbie at top right, followed by John, followed by Linda, followed by Mandy. Our new President John Natt is married to Sue, and they live in West End. John is a Partner in Wilkins Kennedy Chartered Accountants, and a trustee of the Rainbow Centre. He enjoys fishing, photography and travel. John’s favourite charities for the year are Macmillan Nurses,The Rainbow Centre, and Lymphoma Action. His aspiration is to continue supporting worthy causes both in funding and assistance where required; raising the profile of Rotary and the work it does; and ensuring the members enjoy the year. Debbie’s last meeting as President, saw two new members being inaugurated into the club. Margaret Jacobs retired from running a local coach company joined the club at the same time as Sara Walker who runs Better Financial Planning in BW. Both are looking forward to contributing to Rotary goals and joining in the community spirit of the local club. A week after the exhaustion of the Carnival came KidsTreat, where our members took turns to be a Human Fruit Machine; supporting the efforts of the Town Team in providing a free day of entertainment for local children. The feedback was that everyone had a great day out.Well done Town Team. Rainbow Centre Kids Out On Wednesday 13th June a group of BW Rotarians went to Marwell Zoo to support in the coordination of Kid’s Out.The National Rotary KidsOut Day, started in 2015 and is the biggest single outing for disadvantaged children in the UK, with more than 29,000 children participating across the country. As you can see above, your local Rotary club engages in a wide range of support of local and international causes as well as fellowship. J

ulia Wright loves learning. At the moment she is delving into colour in the garden and sitting in her beautiful garden on a summer’s morning you can understand what that means. From a simple posy on her kitchen table to the gorgeous roses picked for their unusual colours there is a harmony there that comes from an understanding of how colours work together to complement and highlight. That her mother was an expert flower arranger only adds to her expertise. It is this general love of learning that makes her an ideal candidate for the 2017/18 presidency of the Hamble Valley Rotary Club. Julia has lived in Durley since August ’92. Her son Nicholas attended Durley School although he has long since flown the nest. She has had a busy and successful career as a hospital pharmacist in the NHS, having trained at Guys, London and culminating in a prestigious position as part of the local NHS Clinical Commissioning Group in Hampshire. Julia joined Rotary about six years ago and gained an instant social circle! In an unusual move she approached them rather than the other way around. With one eye perhaps on retirement and conscious of the benevolent and altruistic streak most NHS workers have Julia was looking for a way to ‘Give back’ to the community. Rotary seemed to fit the bill with its ethos of ‘Service above self ’, helping the local and wider community as well as fundraising. It wasn’t until she retired two years ago that she felt able to consider taking the helm and now only because she has good people coming along behind her. She isn’t the first female president that Hamble Valley have appointed but she rather hopes to fly the flag for women’s involvement in Rotary, beyond the traditional Inner Wheel ladies group. Julia particularly enjoys the wide range of people involved in the group and says she has learnt a lot from the business people there. Her forte is organising and recognising the skills and talents of others and drawing them in. She wants to encourage the innovators and to help the organisation evolve. Currently she has been involved in the Young Writers Competition at Durley School, and in gathering the Shoeboxes for the Christmas Appeal. She goes out on Santa’s Sleigh at Christmas and helps out with the Young Carer’s Festival at Fairthorne Manor and Mock Interviews at Wyvern School each year. As always, Rotary are always on the lookout for very local causes to support so do get in touch if you are involved in something that would benefit from their help– be it time, manpower or financial support. Rolling Back the Years

W

BY IRIS CROWFOOT

hen Anne first saw a steam train pulling up beside the docks in Southampton in 1963, her immediate reaction was to ask, ‘What’s that big, long thing?’ She had just spent 22 days crossing the Atlantic by ocean liner from her home in Grenada and had never seen a train before. Fortunately, someone persuaded her to get on board and the train whisked her off to Waterloo Station and a new life as a trainee nurse in London. Boat trains often formed the Windrush Generation’s first impressions of England and memories like Anne’s are being recorded as part of the Mid Hants Railway (Watercress Line) Canadian Pacific Project. Canadian Pacific (or CanPac to her friends) will be the flagship engine of the Mid Hants Railway. She is a Merchant Navy class steam engine, one of the mighty beasts which pulled the boat trains between Southampton and Waterloo. She was designed by Oliver Bulleid and built in Eastleigh Works in 1941 and has returned there to be restored in a project supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund. When I visited her, CanPac’s six foot two inch diameter wheels towered over me as I stood beside the tracks. She regularly travelled over 100 mph, pulling five or six hundred tons of loaded carriages behind her from the docks. No wonder Anne was impressed! CanPac is being rebuilt in Eastleigh. She was towed to Eastleigh Works by rail, dismantled and evaluated. The boiler was then lifted off the engine and transported by low loader to Ropley. As John Wood, one of the volunteers, explained, all of the parts are ‘hernia jobs to lift’ and the correct equipment is available in Eastleigh to do so. There’s also a wealth of British Rail engineering expertise amongst the volunteers: Malcolm Tomlin started his apprenticeship at Eastleigh Works aged 15 and has fifty years of steam experience under his belt. CanPac’s boiler and two Bulleid-designed wooden bodied carriages are being repaired at Ropley. This is a much smaller works than Eastleigh, but it contains the specialist equipment to make engine parts, weld and

56

test high pressure boilers and rebuild wooden bodied carriages.Very few people have the skills needed to do this nowadays and so six apprentices are being trained as part of the project. As well as repairing old engine parts, apprentices have to design any missing or irreparable ones, then manufacture them by hand on workshop machines which are themselves vintage. In the carriage workshop, the wooden bodied carriages’ curved wooden sides and window frames require painstaking carpentry skills to repair and exceptional painting to finish. It’s proved to be a brilliant training scheme: one apprentice has gone on to become the machine shop manager at Ropley. CanPac has also inspired students from the Solent University School of Media, Arts and Technology. They used the engine shed, signal box and stations on the Mid Hants Railway as backgrounds for their ‘A Different Eye’ film project, which shows the heritage railway operation and restoration through the eyes of 19 year old students. Sam Parker said, ‘What I liked the most was learning about all the old trains and how they are being rebuilt from virtually nothing. It was also nice to see how many volunteers care so much about the heritage and history behind the trains to keep them running. I really commend their work.' The general public is also contributing to the Canadian Pacific oral history collection. This consists of recorded interviews of people’s memories of working, travelling or trainspotting on steam railways between the 1940s and 1960s. Isabella Chalmers-Arnold, a former Perins School student, has already used the collection to research and write an excellent feature on ‘Women on the Railway in WWII’. It can be found at http://preservation.watercressline.co.uk/blog/entry/women-on-therailway-in-wwii. At the end of the oral history project in 2019, the collection will be deposited with Wessex Sound and Film Archive where artists, journalists and academics will be able to listen to the interviews in the future. If you have a memory that you would like to contribute, please contact Becky Peacock at outreach.mhr@hotmail.com
