Manor Farm was once an isolated 15th Century farmhouse with its ancient duck pond and neighbouring St Bartholomew’s Church being mentioned in the Domesday Book. The location was a working farm for over 600 years making it an ideal site for the BBC to film its historical drama Wartime Farm here in 2012. Staff and visitors often report strange smells and poltergeist activity such as doors closing as well as unexplained knocks and tapping. Some have seen full body apparitions, could these be the monks who travelled from Beaulieu to Netley Abbey via the deconsecrated church. Will you be lucky enough to experience the ghosts of children playing? Supernatural Tours has access to both cottages, the two barns and the deconsecrated church for this true spinetingling event. This event will include the use of equipment and participation in experiments as we discover if Manor Farm is haunted. This is a real ghost hunt experience, and we cannot guarantee paranormal activity.£35.00 8.30pm2am. JANUARY SALE 40% OFF We moved into our house in Broughton and although the kitchen was serviceable its layout did not work for us. We looked at the usual suspects and found Happy Kitchens advertising in a local magazine. We invited several kitchen companies and Happy Kitchens in to provide designs and quotations for a new kitchen so that we had a range of options to select from. The resulting designs were similar and the quotations were all in the same ball park. However, Ben was by far the most helpful as a potential supplier and this was important for us. He was more interested in ensuring we were happy with what he was proposing, he also advised us about disposing of our existing kitchen and where we could get the best deal on our new kitchen appliances. The kitchen is fabulous, the fitting team are fantastic, well skilled and dedicated to making your Happy Kitchen perfect. They have a work pedigree that includes high end luxury boat building so their work quality is exquisite. You just need to keep them fueled with coffee and they also take away all the rubbish. I would happily recommend the Happy Kitchen team to anyone. Mr Hensman

Happy Kitchens are quite unique as we are able to offer top quality products, available in any size, fitted by the best professionals in the business. Change your kitchen and bedroom with a makeover or design and install a new kitchen and bedroom, whichever suits your needs or price range.

FIRST STREET FOOD AWARDS LAUNCHED IN HAMPSHIRE

DISCOVER A FLAVOUR OF HAMPSHIRE AT LOCAL PRODUCE SHOW 2019 The popular Local Produce Show will return this January but at a new venue Southampton Football Club. The event will be opened by Paul Rostand, founder of local company Great British Biscotti Co. Taking a traditional food product and evolving it into a range of distinctive sweet and savoury biscotti has proved a recipe of success for the Great British Biscotti Co. The company is an outstanding example of a local food producer taking a traditional artisan product and innovating it into a diverse product range that has national and international appeal. The Great British Biscotti Co, which launched in 2016 and is now in its third bakery due to its expanding customer base from the UK to North America and the Middle East. The company’s recent awards, including the Food Manufacturer Excellence Award for Best SME Innovation of the Year, are testimony to this flavour innovation and the food revolution that the company is a part of. The Great British Biscotti Company is a fine example of how speciality food producers are continually evolving recipes to provide the customer with select and ultimately delicious products. Their repertoire of 28 flavours includes the savoury biscotti range of Cheddar & Fennel, Chorizo & Cheddar and Indian Spice and a sweet biscotti range from the traditional almond to USA inspired varieties including Banoffee Pie. “We have previously exhibited at the Local Produce Show and I’m delighted to be opening the event this year” says Paul. “As a business, the Show enables us to build local partnerships which often go on to become customers. We have an objective in 2019 to build upon the food service arm of the business and with many hotels and caterers

attending the event, the Show will be the perfect way for us to start the year and work towards this.” “The food industry needs events like this, they are a celebration of local food artisans that retain traditions whilst embracing innovation. The Local Produce Show supports our local food and drink economy and heritage whilst enabling local producers to run sustainable and successful businesses.” The Business South Local Produce Show returns on 22 January 2019 at Southampton Football Club. The event, which has been established for over a decade, is the foremost of its kind in the region. It brings together high-quality local producers with influential catering and hospitality trade buyers. The event, which is organised by Business South, and sponsored by Cavendish Ships Stores, Carnival UK, Cunard, Halo Conferences & Events, Hampshire Fare, Hampshire Farmers’ Markets, New Forest Marque, and Paris Smith, aims to support the local and rural economies whilst developing food and drink supply chains. The Great British Biscotti Co will join 60 local producers exhibiting on the day including the Honesty Group, Hill Farm Juice, Hambledon Vineyard and Chalk Stream Foods. For chefs and buyers, the event provides an invaluable opportunity to source new and exciting ingredients whilst supporting the regional economy and its local producers. Previous buyers have included; Carnival UK, University of Southampton, Ideal Collection, Hampshire County Council and Hilton at the Ageas. Chefs, buyers, food and beverage managers and shop owners are invited to attend for free to explore what the region has to offer. Book now: businesssouth.org/events/localproduce-and-trade-show-2019/

A mouth-watering search has been launched in Hampshire to find the county’s best street food vendor and the tastiest grub sold from mobile kitchens, market stalls and on-street sellers. The inaugural Hampshire Street Food Awards will be held in November 2019 but the categories are open now for vendors to register for the award that best suits the food and drink that they offer. Judges for the awards - which will be held in Portsmouth Guildhall - will be looking for the best street food in a wide range of categories. They include best locally sourced produce, best street food burger, best vegetarian or vegan food vendor, best newcomer or start-up vendor and best market street food. To get involved, street food vendors need to select the categories they want to be considered for, enter their business and then encourage their customers to vote for them in the on-line poll. When voting closes the top three vendors in each category will go forward for consideration by the judges to decide the winner. Supported by Hampshire Fare, the awards have been launched by Jeremy Gaskin, who owns and runs Winchester Vintage Catering - a crepe and coffee kitchen in Jenne, a converted Citroen HY van. Profits from the awards will be donated to charities that help feed the homeless throughout Hampshire. So if you are a street food vendor, or know one, that produces the very best food in Hampshire for their customers, then register today for one or more of the categories in the awards. There is a £24 fee for vendors to register for the awards before Easter when entries will close and customer voting begins. At the end of the street food season in September the voting will close and judges will then decide on the winners in each of the categories from the top three with the most votes. ENTERTANIMENT Monologues) which we took on tour to the Brighton fringe and a local church in nearby Southwick village. “The Saga of Ken and Sandra is a kind of love story, as deep down both partners are still in love although the sexual side of their relationship has become flat. It’s funny, down-to-earth and includes plenty of great comic moments. However, the audience will discover that this play is also about the importance of listening in relationships, as well as dealing with difficult issues such as infidelity.

sex, deception and regret… marvel as ‘ash is wielded’, ‘handkerchiefs are waived’ and ‘baldrics are slapped’. Ken and Sandra are a couple for whom the passion has gone out of their marriage. Sandra is concerned that Ken doesn’t love her anymore and therefore decides to liven it up a bit in the bedroom.

The Saga of Ken and Sandra is a comedy set amongst the rhythmic beats, bells and ribbons of the Morris Dancing world, and in 2017 was longlisted for the Kenneth Branagh Award. Written by former schoolteacher and now successful local writer, Jules Garvey-Welch, this play launches the start of Titchfield Festival Theatre’s exciting New Play season.

Will Sandra successfully re-ignite the fire in her marriage to Ken with the items she has purchased on-line? This is a bawdy, fun comedy that is certain to entertain us during the dark winter nights of January.

Inspired by the popularity of Morris Dancing in the local community, the play invites you to join in on a carousel of flirtations,

WELLBEING flour without it being blown into his face in only the slapstick way that pantomime can deliver.

THEATRE REVIEW: BEAUTY AND THE BEAST “We are the people of this town,” chant the villagers at the start of Beauty and the Beast; this year’s Christmas panto at Theatre Royal, Winchester. The scenery and costumes make a fantastic first impression. Early on we learn that it is set in France – the land of current protest and unease – but then there is mention of Brexit, too.

and lots of ‘Oh no it isn’t’. In the shopping scene where Wally (Ed Thorpe) arrives on stage with a trolley, mum Dotty (Julian Eardley) - in a flamboyant dress that only befits a pantomime dame - asks whether he got what she wanted. “Did you get Oxo?” she questions. “No, they ran out of stock.” And so the gags continue to roll right on until “Bras?” “No they went bust!” Writer and director James Barry has clearly enjoyed himself here and even my daughter Harriett (7) gets the jokes and is in stitches.

The two-hour performance is littered with plenty of fun, jolly japes, double entendres

The cooking scene delivers another volley of laughs. Poor old Wally can’t seem to ask for

CHECKING ON ELDERLY NEIGHBOURS DURING WINTER

LAPIS CARE TOP TIPS INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING: • Check on your elderly vulnerable neighbours, have a chat and a cup of tea • Simple things can help e.g. taking out the bin bags • If the weather forecast is poor get extra supplies in for them as well as yourself • Pop in a prescription for them • Clear the path if it’s icy • Help with shopping • Have a game of scrabble, play cards it will stimulate both of you

My wife Caroline and I enjoy watching the reactions of our three children throughout the performance. They are thoroughly engrossed, lost in the land of make believe. It’s a chance to dream and they will inevitably re-enact parts of this performance back at home. While for me, Dotty is the strongest and most enjoyable to watch, all the cast needs congratulating. “I shall dream about the witch [Malevolent] (Sarah Annakin),” says Henry (2) who is enthralled for the whole performance; a massive achievement. Not a traditional pantomime, this love story with its lessons about beauty, substance and character could well go on to stand the test of time. It is sure to make many happy families this festive season. “I laughed at the same jokes as you did,” Caroline tells me later. We always have done but the challenges of parenthood, especially of late, can leave you feeling that you have lost your sense of humour. On our way back through the city centre we stop and watch the Eastleigh Scout Band playing Christmas carols and it is a perfect end to our little trip to Winchester. Written by Tim Saunders

LIFE CHANGING SURGERY FOR WEIGHT LOSS New Year, new you? January is often a time for new challenges, new resolutions and new goals. For many of us, our main goal is centred on weight loss. If you’ve been battling your weight for many years this can often feel like an unachievable and insurmountable task. Spire Southampton patient, Katie, had been battling with weight loss since she was 11 years old. With her weight only increasing and her personal well-being going down she decided it was time to make some tough decisions. “I was always a bubbly, sociable character but this has changed dramatically, especially since giving birth to my daughter. I had put on a huge amount of weight and felt like everyone would look at me and laugh or judge me based on how I looked. We had financial stresses because of the business and some personal family issues that were putting a lot of pressure on me. Being an ‘emotional eater’ I found these as excuses to eat and comfort myself. I would then crash diet for a few days until I gave in and binged again, it was a vicious circle that I just felt trapped in.” Katie had tried all the slimming groups, several times over. She had joined the gym and tried to go until her anxiety issues got really bad. Katie even tried hypnotherapy, all of which were short term and before falling back into the same vicious circle.

Her GP referred her to Spire Southampton Hospital where, following pre-surgery support, she met Bariatric surgeon, Mr Michael Van den Bossche. “It may not be common knowledge but morbid obesity, being very overweight, is now classified as a chronic disease just the same as diabetes or high blood pressure” says Mr Van den Bossche “Many overweight people fail to reduce their weight by means of dieting of lifestyle changes. Weight loss surgery is the most effective treatment for obesity and brings a host of medical benefits. In today’s world, obesity is fast becoming the most preventable cause of cancer next to smoking. In other words weight loss surgery can effectively reduce the risk of developing and dying of all sorts of cancer. It also adds extra years of good quality to one’s life expectancy. Who doesn’t want to see their grandchildren grow up?” Following her consultation with Mr Van den Bossche, Katie decided bariatric surgery was the direction she wanted to go in. “Everyone was very honest about surgery and how life changing it could be along with the risks and what I would need to change going forward. At no point did anyone say this would be easy. I can now say that this is a common misconception. Surgery is not an easy option for weight loss. It requires hard work and dedication on the patient’s part and should be taken seriously; it’s a very brave decision.”

PROMOTION Katie had a mini gastric bypass. This is when the surgeon creates a small compartment at the top of your stomach using staples. This will effectively be your new stomach and as it will be small, it will fill up quickly with food, giving you a sensation of fullness. Mr Van den Bossche explains the procedure “The mini gastric bypass is one of the most effective operations to help someone lose weight. During the procedure the stomach is reduced in size and a part of the small bowel is bypassed so that the body cannot absorb all the calories. I was the first surgeon in the UK to do this procedure back in 2010. Since then the procedure has become popular all over the country. The average time to do a mini gastric bypass is approximately 30 to 35 minutes. Patients recover very quickly after a shorter anaesthetic.” Patients normally stay for 2 nights and following surgery Mr Van den Bossche encourages patients to become more active. “Return to gym exercise or other sports activities is allowed after 6 weeks when all the wounds have healed soundly.” This is exactly what Katie did “By week 6 I started swimming small amounts and walking a lot more, the weight was falling off and people were noticing. I gained more confidence with every day and looked forward to buying new bits of clothing to see me through.” “I feel totally in control of my life again, I can run around with my children instead of sitting and watching them play. My risk of developing heart problems or diabetes (both in my family)

have minimised. I am confident, which means I have excelled in work, I socialise more, I have taken on an Open University degree, attended lectures and day schools all involving meeting new people. I love clothes and don’t live in black anymore. Although it is still a constant battle to eat correctly and manage my lifestyle correctly, taking constant planning, hard work, willpower and dedication, I am healthier and happier than I have ever been.” If you are interested in weight loss surgery, please contact Spire Southampton Hospital for more information on procedures, costs and specialists – 023 8091 4471. Consultant General Surgeon, Mr Michael Van den Bossche is offering free mini consultations on Thursday 7th February at Spire Southampton Hospital; please call 023 8091 4471 for more information or to book your complimentary appointment. Please note that mini consultations are an opportunity to ask any questions that you may have, and are not a formal outpatient consultation. If you wish to proceed to treatment or surgery, a full outpatient consultation will be required. AN INTERVIEW WITH AN ORTHOPAEDIC SURGEON Mr Mark Frame, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon sat down with Spire Southampton to talk about his love for skiing, how to prepare for the ski season, injuries and the new Rapid Access Ski clinic Mr Frame is offering at Spire Southampton. What got you into skiing? How do you get into University racing? I have always been a keen skier, it definitely helped coming from Scotland with mountains (and snow!) on my doorstep. I actually grew up virtually next door to a dry ski slope and spent any free time I had in a pair of ski boots! As soon as I possibly could I grasped the opportunity to do my ski instructor qualifications and spent years teaching from beginners up to race training. I also had the chance to teach those less fortunate and expose them to a sport they might not otherwise have had the opportunity to experience. It was then a natural step to join the Aberdeen University Ski Club in the cold and snowy North East. It was a great club and great to be a part of the race team. I have always been competitive and bashing slalom poles down on a cold and rainy Scottish night never dampened my enjoyment. Do you still get a chance to teach skiing with your commitments as an Orthopaedic surgeon? I kept up regular teaching when I was an orthopaedic trainee in Glasgow, but like anything life became busy and it is not something that I could fit in between shifts. I now have 2 children and my teaching skills are coming in useful to encourage them to enjoy the sport I love. Where is your favourite ski destination? I loved skiing in Scotland. It’s not for the faint-hearted! Skiing in sleet and over heather, but if you can ski in Scotland, you can ski anywhere! My favourite place is Tignes in France. The food is also slightly better there! With the ski season fast approaching what do you do to prepare? The key thing I do before skiing is making sure I am as physically fit as I can be. Running or cycling to prepare your legs. Stamina is the key. Injuries happen when you get tired and don't concentrate. Keeping your quads in good condition and having the stamina to resist the afternoon burn is vital!

What's the best advice you would give people preparing for the ski season? Give yourself plenty of time to prepare. Gauge your level and work out what your goals are. Everyone is different and that's where having someone else to guide you through a programme is great. Is there anything you can do while on holiday or is all the preparation done before you go? Best thing is to make sure your gear is in top condition and as much as we all like the race skis, make sure your ski gear matches your ability. Have a professional set your bindings so they release correctly if you fall. Last but not least, stop when you’re tired, that one more run might be the worst thing you ever did. It’s never too early for apres! What ski injuries do you commonly see? The most common injuries are tibial fractures and ACL injuries. Getting diagnosed quickly is important as we can now consider you for ACL repair rather than doing a reconstruction. This is only possible in the first 4-6 weeks. How common are they? Should we be worried? These injuries are still rare and you shouldn't worry. It’s just good to be aware and maximise your chances of having a great injury free holiday. What made you want to set up the ski clinic at Spire Southampton? I felt there was a need to have a rapid means for anyone who has had an injury whilst skiing to get diagnosed and treated as quickly as possible. Being able to book your clinic and MRI whilst still in your chalet in France just puts your mind at rest. The advantage of a quick diagnosis also opens the door for ACL injuries to be possibly treated with a new technique of ACL repair and Arthrex Internal Bracing rather than a traditional ACL reconstruction using your hamstring tendons as a graft. This new ACL repair technique could get you back on your feet quicker and with less pain. This needs to be assessed quickly as the window of opportunity is 4-6 weeks. Spire Southampton’s ski clinic allows patients to book appointments from the slopes, happy in the knowledge you’ll get treated as quickly as possible on your return to the UK. WORK BEGINS ON DEVELOPING NEXT PRIORITIES FOR SOUTH DOWNS NATIONAL PARK

Conservation and heritage organisations, rural economy representatives, water companies, farming groups and volunteer networks are just some of the groups being challenged to help set out the priorities for the South Downs National Park for the next five years and the practical action they will take to help achieve them. The work is part of a five-year review of the Partnership Management Plan for the National Park. The first South Downs National Park Partnership Management Plan was published by the National Park Authority in 2014 following extensive consultation. The plan

DISCOVER THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF NATURAL NAVIGATION WITH BESTSELLING AUTHOR TRISTAN GOOLEY

Margaret Paren, Chair of the South Downs National Park Authority, said “The Partnership Management Plan is about conservation and enhancement not preservation. In setting priorities for the next five years we must do all we can to respond to both the opportunities and challenges that face this wonderful living, working landscape to keep it thriving.

A talk that starts with solo crossings of the Atlantic in a light aircraft and then a small yacht before plunging into the very rare art of natural navigation. Tristan describes how he learnt to find his way using the sun, moon, stars, weather, plants, animals and buildings.

“Everyone who cares for or benefits from the National Park has a role to play and we will be engaging with partners, communities and other stakeholders over the coming months to put together an exciting future for the National Park.” The new Partnership Management Plan will launch in autumn 2019 alongside a campaign encouraging members of the public to get involved in caring for the National Park.] www.southdowns.gov.uk

OUR PLANET

DON'T LET GO BALLOON AND LANTERN RELEASES

The Marine Conservation Society Don't let go - Support a ban on balloon and lantern releases We need your help to show that balloon and lantern releases aren’t just a moment of fun without consequences later. Balloons sold as “degradable” are known to last a number of months, even years, and pose a choking threat to wildlife at sea, and on land. Balloons, balloon string and sky lanterns leave a permanent hazard. Now, forward-thinking local authorities and businesses are seeing the need to ban releases on their land, and you can add your support for others, too. Pledge your support for a ban on balloon and lantern releases in your area. More and more Councils are voting to ban the release of balloons and lanterns on their land. They’re making that decision after pressure from local people. Now we want to ramp up that pressure in areas where letting go isn’t on the Council agenda. Pledge your support below to help actively target Councils and campaign on a local level.

I

am sure we have all purchased and accidentally released a balloon into the sky at some point in our lives, or a son or daughter has by accident. Have you ever thought where do they go? Studies on balloon biodegradability provide disturbing figures, especially for foil based Mylar balloons which are made of synthetic nylon with metallic coating. These are non-biodegradable and research suggests that they will last for tens of thousands of years in our environment. Although latex balloons do biodegrade with significant time, the plastic plugs and cords that are attached to them do not. These cords have been found to trap and kill wildlife. Then there is the additional issue of balloon plastic waste drifting into our oceans. Parties are a huge contributors to plastic waste, the Mylar balloons being of the greatest concern, but thankfully there are websites dedicated to providing sustainable products for parties, like www.littlecherry.co.uk. As editor of the Forum, whilst walking my dog around our beautiful Itchen area I have collected 14 Mylar balloons in the last year. Generally these have a date on them, one showing a date of 2008. Even after 10 years in our countryside I could still clearly make out the words 'Happy Birthday' on it, the balloon hanging from a branch in Cheriton Wood. The Marine Conservation Society have a dedicated page to try and bring some controls to this form of littering by banning balloon and lantern releases which is already in place in many counties, but not Hampshire.

Where are they already banned? Our map shows how many councils have banned either balloons, lanterns or both. There is still a lot of work to do though so please add your voice by pledging your support above. You can also check our list of Councils with bans to see if yours is on there. What else can you do? Why not tweet/Facebook your council and encourage your social media networks to do the same? Copy and paste the text below (editing the Twitter name) to tweet your Council and/or write on your Council’s Facebook page. Twitter #Balloons aren’t good in the #environment. Please (@mycouncil) #Dontletgo on your land.Vote to ban upward #littering @mcsuk Facebook Sky lanterns and balloons may look pretty but they can harm wildlife at sea and on land (not to mention the fire risk they also pose). Will you follow other Councils and ban releases on your land? https://www.mcsuk.org/campaigns/dont-let-go #DontLetGo Let us know what they say! (NB. If your Council already has a ban, why not tweet or Facebook them to say ‘thank you’ instead!) [Note: Map Contains OS data © Crown copyright [and database right] (2017). GARDEN COMMUNITY on the way to bring joy under privileged children in Romania, Moldova, Montenegro and Albania. In early November we collect all the shoeboxes and sort them into age and gender then they are packed up and sent to a rented warehouse where, for the past five years, Rotarians from The Rotary club of Andover have carried out the work of storing them and arranging for container lorries to collect them and get them shipped off to their destinations in time for Christmas.

HEDGE END ROTARY CHRISTMAS SHOEBOXES It could be said that Christmas tends to divide people into two broad groups. There are those who start planning for the big event months in advance, have all their cards written by September and their presents chosen, bought and wrapped, all well before November. There are others (the writer included) for whom it comes as a complete surprise around the end of November, who struggle to think what presents to get and are still writing cards as the final posting date looms up.

NEW STAGE HITS THE RIGHT NOTE WITH FROXFIELD CHOIR

Members of Hedge End Rotary however do have one very big reminder every year when we start to prepare for the Rotary Shoebox Scheme. In common with Rotarians all over Britain and Ireland, clubs in the Rotary Wessex District start to get ready for this event as early as the summer when leaflets are printed and sent to members for distribution to schools, social clubs, craft groups, churches and members of the public. The leaflets explain what sort of lovely things can go into the colourfully wrapped boxes and where they will be going. This year they are

can be used at two different heights, which is ideal for a choir of our size. It is also portable, easy to store, assemble and disassemble, and to move from one venue to another. It has improved our experience of performing by giving better lines of sight to our conductor. We are very grateful to councillor Drew for the grant which made purchasing the staging possible."

We are always grateful to Wildern School not just for the large number of shoeboxes they contribute but for allowing us to use their facilities to gather together and sort all the boxes we collect. 2018 was a record year for our club as we sent off 669 shoebox gifts to contribute to the Wessex District total of nearly 27,000. This means that the kindness and generosity of people in Hedge End and all over the District will ensure that 27,000 children who may otherwise have had no presents at all, are given a wonderful Christmas surprise. If you would like to know more about Hedge End Rotary you can find us on Facebook, Twitter or on our website. You can also ring David Baynes on 01489 690126

DARK EVENINGS ARE HERE – DON’T MAKE IT EASY FOR BURGLARS

Each councillor at EHDC has a budget of £4,500 to give to causes and organisations that support the local community.

Froxfield Choir and other local community groups in the village have been given a boost with the purchase of a brand new stage thanks to a grant from East Hampshire District Council. The grant of £634, approved by ward councillor Nick Drew, covered around a third of the total cost of the stage and has given the choir a welcome boost. The improvement is a great step-up from its old makeshift arrangement of hiring and borrowing different staging from various other organisations. “The difference this has made to the choir has been enormous”, says Choir Chairman Sue Clegg. “The staging is a modular system that

Cllr Drew, ward member for Froxfield, Steep and Stroud, said: “The new stage is a massive improvement for the choir and has given them a solid footing to keep their performances well polished for years to come. "I believe this is money well spent and will hit the right note with many local people. It’s not only to be used by the choir, but also by various other groups and organisations within Froxfield, including Froxfield Village School.” Froxfield Choir rehearses on Thursday evenings and performs at least four times a year. Its members come from a wide area, including Clanfield, Stroud, Steep, Hawkley, Rogate and Petersfield. www.easthants.gov.uk

THE MAGIC OF LIGHT The dark days of winter naturally lead us to think about light. Perhaps in particular, light in our gardens. While we are still in the midst of winter, it is an ideal time to assess how you would like to illuminate your outdoor spaces.

designed. This extends to exterior ceiling, floor and wall lamps together with outside standard lights for your sitting areas under pergolas or glass roofed verandas. Underwater lighting for ponds has become ever more sophisticated too. While clever design and creative planning can conceal the source of the light to create subtle lighting effects to your borders, sculptures, rows of trees or individual shrubs. What is more, from the comfort of your home you can control the lighting with remote controls and dimmers.

Where are the darkest spots? What would you like to see when looking out from the house? How about lighting around the front door which can serve two purposes, being both practical and proving an attractive approach to the house?

Create charm With some clever use of exterior lighting, you can bring a little charm and magic to your outdoor spaces in addition to its practical purposes, such as security lighting or wall lanterns by your front door. Attractive & Dynamic Garden lighting is now attractive and dynamic. It adds just that right touch for both the darker days of the year and for the warmer seasons when you are outside entertaining or relaxing. Additionally, the trend in garden lighting is becoming more artistic. There is a completely new range of highly technical lights and lighting to illuminate and enhance the view of your garden from your home. This includes special effects, down lighters, solar lights, delicate LED lighting strips and recess lights for lawns, decking and paving. It’s all in the design Furthermore, just as outside rooms are becoming more and more popular, so the accessories and materials to add the finishing touches to these spaces are becoming ever more stylish and well

Plan Now The current trend to have wide expanses of glass overlooking our gardens means that outdoor lighting is an art in itself. It helps to create an ambiance of magic and charm with soft, glowing illumination even in the depths of winter. Use the dark evening now to begin planning where best to install lighting and this time next year, as you wait for spring and look out onto a beautifully illuminated garden, you will be very glad you did!

EAST MEON GARDEN CLUB – 3RD DECEMBER MEETING

adorning door-ways, archways or even around wall mirrors perhaps for party celebrations simply by the inclusion of flowers. We were shown how to gradually build-up the garland and the importance of trying to use as much of the material as possible primarily with judicial cutting. It was pointed out that the type of wire to tie in the stems/stalks was very important and Amanda bought along some reels of almost invisible, cotton thin twine which can be bought on-line.

We were also delighted to welcome a visitor all the way from Romsey who joined the Garden Club on the spot, what better recommendation can there be than that? A total of 5 new members joined on the evening. You are all most welcome.

The evening was complemented with beautiful home-made nibbles, a complimentary glass of Fizz or a glass of red or white wine. David gave the vote of thanks to Amanda who is obviously an extremely talented young lady who made the Festive Meeting very special. Just a reminder, there is no meeting in January but our February meeting kicks off with a talk by Marcus Dancer on ‘The Wonder Of Clematis’. We might additionally be a pruning demonstration, so be sure to put Monday 4th February 2019 in your new diaries/calendars.

SUSAN CONCENTRATING ON THE CREATION IN HAND

What a lovely way to end a most fruitful year at the Garden Club, with Amanda (Wyatt) giving us a very informative and ‘hands-on’ demonstration and imparting some invaluable tips on how to achieve an impressive Christmas Garland. These Garlands could just as easily be adapted for other uses, such as

SPACE LECTURE - SOLVING THE NEAR-EARTH ASTEROID PROBLEM 9TH JANUARY

PORT AND LEMON SUPPORTS UK MARINE CONSERVATION VIA CHARITY PARTNERSHIP WITH SEA-CHANGERS Port and Lemon has become the latest business to form a partnership with the marine conservation charity, Sea-Changers. Sea-Changers supporters can now raise money every time they spend over £10 on the Port and Lemon website by simply using the code SEACHANGERS at the checkout. This action will save the customer 10% on their shopping basket total and Port and Lemon will generously donate 10% of the sale price to Sea-Changers. Port & Lemon design home items, gifts and cards that have a quirky mix of nostalgia and wit that is inspire by the sea. Their range of contemporary home and gifts is bold, colourful and produced in the UK, and designed by Tracy Evans and Kate Cooke in their Hampshire studio. The money will feed into Sea-Changers' grant fund which is distributed to UK based marine conservation projects. SeaChangers is a charity with a simple mission: to give back to the sea. The charity is run by volunteers who develop bespoke partnerships with businesses that care about the marine environment, with the aim of raising money for a UK based marine conservation fund. Sea-Changers distribute the donated money, in accordance with their funding policy, to a range of projects engaged in: direct marine clean up action, education and awareness raising about marine conservation issues, species and habitat protection, and conservation research. Many of the projects funded undertake grassroots community

conservation work that simply would not take place without the Sea-Changers grant. Since being set up in 2011, Sea-Changers has awarded over 120 grants to projects right around the UK. SOME EXAMPLES OF THE PROJECTS THAT RECEIVED FUNDS IN 2018 ARE: •

Basking Shark Scotland who will be running a series of clean ups in the remote islands of Argyll transporting their volunteers via ribs and an inflatable dinghy.

Shetland Amenity Trust who are using the funding to produce a film about the UK's successful voluntary litter pick which involves 20% of Shetland's population volunteering to clean its beaches and coastlines annually.

Environment Plymouth will be running local workshops (Plastic Surgeries) on the dangers of plastic pollution and the alternatives available for local traders.

Plastic Clever Salcombe's 'Kids Against Plastic' campaign, which will empower children to help make change in their community and reduce the 'big four' plastic polluters.

Rachel Lopata, Co-Founder of Sea-Changers said: "It's great to be working with Port and Lemon and to receive their fantastic support. We love their products so to know that shopping with them is also helping the UK's marine environment gives us a great reason to spend money this Christmas!" Tracy Evans, Director at Port and Lemon said: “We’re delighted to be able to support such a worthy charity. So much of our work is inspired by our coastal surroundings so it is great to be able to contribute to the SeaChangers mission”. Further information about Sea-Changers can be found at www.sea-changers.org.uk

THE LECTURE Applying Missile Defence Technology to Solve the Near Earth Asteroid Problem Alexander Godfrey (Lockheed Martin). The Chelyabinsk meteor in 2013 caused approximately £10 million worth of damage and led to 1500 people seeking medical attention. The object remained undetected prior to its atmospheric entry and a larger meteor would be catastrophic if it happened over a city. Before panic sets in; some comfort can be taken that systems already exist, or are being developed, that could deal with this threat. With the technology potentially at our fingertips, this presentation primarily explores whether or not there is a strong enough business case for the inhabitants of Earth to pay for such a system. THE SPEAKER Mr Godfrey is a Senior Systems Engineer working at Lockheed Martin UK – Ampthill, technically leading the pursuit and execution of new business civil space programmes. Most notably he has worked on ESA Space Rider, ESA Mars Sample Return Orbiter, Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generators as well as several classified exoatmospheric programmes. The lecture will be held twice, first at 4.30pm and then at 6.30pm, respectively at Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium. Tickets are £8 for the 4.30pm lecture, and £10 for the 6.30pm lecture. LIVE AND LET THRIVE T

ear-wet hair at her temples, she lies on the bed. Needing to cry great racking sobs and rail at the world, she is silent. Deafening grief won’t turn around that flight to Brisbane and bring her girl back. Lying on the bed, that morning vacated by her twenty-five year old baby, she turns her head and inhales the sleeping scent of her child. No more binge-watching bad TV on a Sunday night till the small hours, knowing that the weekend will be over once they go to bed. Or dressing in their one-sies to watch The Hunger Games. All of them. Again. Hands in a box of maltesers. Or hugging her, warm and real and whole, not some image on a laptop. “It won’t be so bad, Muzzy – we can Facetime.” Not so bad, just bloody awful. Now that her eyes are open and the leaking tears slow, she looks up at the glow-in-the-dark stars they never quite got around to taking down. There are spiders there in all four corners of the room, too. Good job her daughter didn’t clock them. Well, no point in turfing them out of the room now there’s no-one else in residence. Live and let thrive. A bedroom now spare and empty of her girl, but still filled with her presence. Along with three large bin bags. “Muz – didn’t get around to sorting out these.” She’d put Post-Its on them; Charity eBay Muzzy How she thought ‘Muzzy’ was going to squeeze herself into clothes two sizes too small, she wasn’t sure. Maybe she’d had more faith in her mother’s ability to stick to a diet than was strictly realistic. The fashions were probably too young in any event. Yesterday, her girl’d been writing on the sticky pads. Yesterday, she’d been packing, looking excited and painfully so much younger than her quarter century. Yesterday, sat just here on the bed, checking over her passport, ticket and money. Yesterday.. all my troubles seemed so far away. One of the spiders scuttled out of its corner with surprising speed and made it half way across the ceiling, before changing its mind and scuttling back. Now it looks as though they’re here to stay. Oh I believe in yesterday. The mournful ear-worm continued unabated in her head and her throat tightened. The spider repeated its scuttling manoeuvre. “Which one are you?” Talking to herself now to distract the tears clamouring to

fall again. “Ringo, John, Paul or – who’s that other one – can never remember his name..” A voice calls up from downstairs. “Is that you love? Are you alright? Would you like a cup of tea?” He is hurting too, but blessim, he is of the belief that a cup of tea, if not quite a panacea, will surely lessen the sting. And maybe he’s right she thinks, as she heaves herself off the bed and out of the door. Switching off the light, she remembers “George.. that’s him. G’night boys.” ....................................... Putting post in the bedside drawer of the spare room. Photographed and Watsapp-ed, it can be destroyed when her girl’s back for a visit next year, or maybe the year after. And her silver christening bangles have turned up. A bit random, but will she want to keep them – they’re a bit titchy? She puts them in the cupboard and they can be taken back to Oz next visit. Or not. Probably they’ll go into the eBay bag that she still hasn’t got around to sorting out. Looking around; five spiders now, they’ve been joined by a smaller one, but is that a spiderling or a sightseer? It’s living near the light fitting. Well, they can’t be the Beatles anymore, which is fine, she never really liked them anyway. Always thought the Monkees were better. Controversial, probably. P’raps they’re the Rolling Stones – aren’t there five of them? She’s not sure – and not sure that she’s very keen on the Stones either. Thinks they only did one good song, ‘Paint it Black’, but it’s in her top ten, so she forgives them for all the others. It’s not so bad with Facetime, actually. At least she gets to see her daughter, her face and expressions as she talks. How did people cope years ago? Exchange flimsy, tear splashed air mail letters. As many and as often as they were, they would never be enough. She has a thought. Take That; there’s definitely 5 of them, or there were. Loved ‘Rule the World’, her and her girl’s special anthem from ‘Stardust’, their go-to movie when Christmas tree decorating every year. She’ll be doing that on her own this December. Those tears, always hovering. ....................................... See next months' Forum Magazine for Part 2 © 2018 Lucia Foster-Found www.luciafosterfound.com

HAMPSHIRE MUM

DOMESTIC GOD? “It’s all about getting into good habits mum.” Star 1 stood with a large black sack one hand and a duster in the other.

I has his mothers’ shopping gene, all the clothes he was keeping were colour coded in the wardrobe while others had been separated in to clothing bank and for donating to Star II. “Right Mum”, he handed me a pile of Jack Wills and Super Dry,” these are for him but I’m going to sort his room first, it’s really disgusting I can smell something in there I’m sure.”

I was suspicious- who are you and what have you done with my son? Star I had in fact been planning his next day of for some time, lots of pledges to clean his room even redecorate it, most of which had fallen on my deaf ears happy in the knowledge it would never happen. Yet here he was explaining at great pains the cleaning process- as if I wasn’t skilled enough! Yes the rooms of Star I and II were not that brilliant, clean of course but not so that one would risk consuming the various confectionary that is secreted in hidey-holes, trust me I have thought about it. But I figure at the age of twenty-one and sixteen respectively all I should be doing is pushing the piles of clothes into a bundle with the hoover, the rest is up to them. By retiring from the more refined areas of household chores, such as litter removal, washing collection and dusting I am in fact doing them a massive favour - how else will they learn to look after themselves? The answer to that it would seem is actually not very well. To be fair Star I had never been that messy but since lovely Tiny Dancer girlfriend has been on the scene he decided to up his game. So there I stood in the doorway, not daring to tread beyond the sparkly threshold, while he explained the art of t-shirt folding. It was a revelation although I did have to stifle a yawn. Sometimes when you look at your children you are immediately hit with the realisation that genetics are so much more that eye and hair colour. There can be no doubt that Star

I have to say I felt a little guilty, my resolve crumbled rather, had I really been such a bad neglectful mother that my youngest was living in squalor? Judging by what refuse was uncovered then yes it would appear so, I had no idea one teenager could consume so many Swiss rolls! The gene of mine that Star I clearly does not have is the one that deals with sentimentality, he ruthlessly culled the last remnants of childhood converting Star II’s boudoir into a cool man cave with just a flick of a duster; oh and four black sacks of rubbish. Then it occurred to me that if Star I is that good at decluttering and cleaning he may like to attack the rest of the house, I could hide my really precious things and then let him loose! Although maybe not, mine is not the only resolve to weaken. After a recent night out The Husband and I returned to find the remains of a Chinese takeaway in its bag waiting patiently for the dustbin, various glasses and bottles dotted about the lounge and the dishwasher, although loaded with dirty crockery, still awaiting a tablet and to be turned on. Oh well one room at a time then, like he said it’s all about getting into good habits. There’s the first resolution gone. BY SANDRA PAGAN

BW Rotary Club is proud to be a contributor to the project to improve access to this muchloved local church. Access, for the last 100 years or so, has been by steps or a slope to a height of some 3ft. Although the slope has catered for most people with limited mobility, ‘Joan’ is not in a wheelchair but is unable to climb steps or a slope. This proved to be the inspiration for the congregation to come up with an innovative solution: a step-lift. After months of planning and fund-raising, the lift was officially opened by “Joan” on Sunday 4th November with a large crowd to share in the moment - and the tea and cake! Project manager was Keith Fry, who coordinated the resources of the lift supplier, Wessex Lifts and two local craftsmen from

THE FORUM TALKS WITH

T

TIFF NEEDELL

iff Needell is clad in a purple cashmere sweater, tall and slim, he takes his coffee black and is delightfully very chatty. Born in Havant he grew up in Weybridge, Surrey near the Brooklands race track but moved back to Hampshire thirty years ago and for the past fifteen years has lived in a big Victorian house near Stockbridge. “My home is my favourite place here, it has 6000sq. feet more than our previous house along with a twelve-acre garden and was a bargain thanks to a main line railway link going through it – I have my own railway crossing!” Also running through the land is a stretch of the abandoned Southampton to Salisbury canal. “I’ve worked hard on restoring it and I think it’s now the best-preserved section.” The more we talk the more I realise that Tiff ’s home could well be a metaphor for his life - the gently flowing steady water of the canal will certainly get you where you want to go eventually juxtaposed with the dynamic speed of the train rushing headlong to its destination. It’s a train Tiff still wants to be on. ‘I feel like I’m the ‘nearly made it man’, that will be on my head stone” Although he laughs there is dissatisfaction and frustration behind the smile. There shouldn't be dissatisfaction as Tiff has had a successful career dating back to the 1970’s when he regularly raced at Thruxton. He also had a long and successful career as a British racing car driver competing in a wide range of events across the spectrum of the sport, including Formula One and the gruelling Le Mans 24-hour race in which he finished third in1990. Tiff now works in the world of television and motor journalism and writes regular motoring columns for Modern Classics and Drive Tribe. He first came to our screens in 1987 co-presenting the original Top Gear, then co-presenting Fifth Gear for Channel 5 from 2002. He is now presenting Lovecars on YouTube that is proving to have an ever increasing number of views. Tiff is a very popular personality on the after dinner speaking circuit and regularly plays golf at pro-am and charity events. At Thruxton you can enjoy three high speed laps in a BMW driven by Tiff for £150. He is also a member of the Grand Prix Drivers Club exclusive to those who have raced at that level - Tiff qualified for the Belgium Grand Prix in 1980. It's enough to keep most people busy but then Tiff is not most people.

“I don't know why, I mean I never won a Grand Prix. but I’m always happy to play the stooge I suppose - the butt of people’s jokes on those occasions. I would like people to think I've achieved enough, I really want what they have - the money and the respect”. It’s a conundrum that seems to weigh heavy on his mind and one that perhaps may not be solved. Does he take issue with the amount of money in Formula One? “No not at all. Just think of the amount of Premiership footballers sitting on the bench all earning fantastic amounts then compare that to the Grand Prix grid there’s very few drivers earning the big money.” Talking of football, Tiff has a passion for the game. “I love it. I’m a season ticket holder at Southampton FC, have been for years. I’m always in the stands with all the fans I just love the atmosphere and the banter- love a bit of banter! It’s great that my sons still come back for matches it’s a way to keep the family together.” What was the best drive of his life? “Without doubt the Le Mans 24 Hours, both the drivers and their cars have to be at the peak of their performance and it’s an event so steeped in history. But the Macau track near Hong Kong is pretty special and of course I love Thruxton” What does Tiff drive at the moment? “I’m an ambassador for BMW at some of their events and have a 540i Touring on loan while our family car that we own is a twelveyear-old BMW X5 - so my wife and I both drive BMWs! As is the way these days, they’re both automatics even though I actually prefer manuals - I like to be able to drive through the gears that’s the point of driving isn’t it.” “The only other car I own is the Formula Ford Lotus 69F racing car that started my career and which I bought back five years ago some forty years after I sold it! I race it a couple of times a year in the Historic Championship and actually won a round at Thruxton where I had my very first race win in the same car way back in 1972!” What next for Tiff Needell? “I’m trying to develop plans for a short motor magazine television program, just a half hour slot once a week, but it’s a slow process!” Slow maybe, but no doubt it will happen. See Tiff on Lovecars - YouTube. GG.

MEON VALLEY LIONS CLUB: ANNUAL FORD CHARITY FISHING FESTIVAL We have organised a Fishing Festival on Weston Shore, Southampton Water for many years. All profits from the festival are donated to Naomi House Hospice. Weston Shore is situated on the east side of Southampton, the park runs alongside the Solent from the city boundary, at Abbey Hill, towards the mouth of the River Itchen, at Woolston. Included within the overall park site is the ancient woodland of West Wood, the grassed Rolling Mills area, children's play areas and the water frontage. Due to the inter-tidal mudflat, which provides an important feeding area for thousands of migrating waders, the area is internationally recognise as a "site of special scientific interest". The park is a popular location for people across the city, who regularly visit to watch the ever changing activities on the water including the large cruise liners coming and going, exercise themselves, their children and their dogs, relax, strolling through the park, fishing or bird watching, have a picnic and take in the sea air. The Fishing Festival is run in conjunction with the Ford Sports and Social Club Sea Angling Club and with a generous donation from Unite the Union. 44th open beach fishing festival, Rolling Mill to Beach Lane, Netley Sunday 20th January 2019. “It’s a new dawn, it’s a new day, it’s a new life - for Me and I’m feeling good” are the wonderful lyrics of Michael Buble’s song and they ring so true for the start of this brand New Year 2019. “Feeling good” that’s what we are after, “feeling good” is what matters, it’s what gives us strength, it lets us enjoy life with all its facets! Bring it on, we say! Yet, how do we get to this state of “feeling good”? Well let me share my own experience with you: Life continues to be very full for me, full of life’s challenges.Yet, what keeps me going and what gives me strength is, that I have Dancing & Yoga in my Life. Even in the most challenging moments in my life, I kept on dancing – I teach Dance & Yoga and this is how I make my living, so there is no letting up. Yet, it always surprised me, how ever low I felt – on the dance floor I came alive. Dancing lifted my spirits and I so enjoyed our Dance Classes and they were filled with Joy and Laughter no matter what. And it is not being fake, it is just what happens when you dance – it is natural. Mental Health is a big Topic at the moment and it absolutely effects every age group. I have heard of children as young as six being diagnosed with suffering from depression…and the queues to get seen by CAMHS are immensely long and speaking from experience, the results frankly not very encouraging… Yet, there are simple ways of how we can help our children and help ourselves: with Dancing and Yoga. Yoga has had the most profound effect in my life. As well as giving me an outer strength, it has given me amazing inner strength and resilience, so I feel ready “to weather any storm in life!” You see, I’ve been there, done that, got the t-shirt! And I know what works, what makes us “feel good”. And from this experience our repertoire of Dance and Yoga Classes has grown over the last 10 years and it is a joy to see what a difference Dancing and Yoga has made in the lives of our Dance and Yoga Friends that have joined us over the years. “It’s a new dawn, it’s a new day, it’s a new life – for you too to start “feeling good!” Looking forward to seeing you on the Dance Floor and on the Yoga Mat!

FEATURE

RUFFLING SOME FEATHERS I BY CLAIRE THURLOW

try to go for a walk every day. Even if days are short and the weather is awful, a brisk circuit around the village counteracts that ‘cabin fever’ from winter days spent mainly indoors.

One day it was foggy. Not just a light mist, but a proper, thick fog which enveloped the countryside, obliterating familiar landmarks and much of the road ahead. It wasn’t like this when I started out, but by the time I reached the top of the hill, I could see little more than a few metres in front of me. Fields, woods and hedgerows had all been obliterated. Having got this far, I thought I might as well continue, so I ventured on. If I followed the lane I could hardly get lost in this white-out, could I? But my mind started to wander. A friend had been telling me about a novel she’s working on. It’s a Victorian tale, set in Yorkshire, where thick fog rolls in from the sea and strange creatures stalk the moors. So far, so gothic. My friend had immersed herself so much in the plot, that she can no longer write at night for fear of scaring herself! I shivered and buttoned my coat against the damp cloud which wrapped itself around me. My footsteps echoed on the tarmac, but otherwise the world was strangely quiet. No birds sang, no sheep bleated, no dog barked to break the silence. I quickened my pace; this was not a day for hanging around. Then I saw it. At the furthest point I could make out, a dark shape moved across the road. It was an animal of some kind, but through the swirling mist I couldn’t tell what. It paused and seemed to turn and stare at me. I stopped and stared back. Was it a fox? A large cat, perhaps? Whatever it was, it clearly found me

of little interest, and resumed its way, disappearing into the trees. It certainly didn’t have the lithe grace of a fox or a cat, more of a slow, but confident, strut. What in the world was it? I hurried on, hoping to see it again, but it was not to be. Until the next day.The fog was long gone, and the fields rolled out beneath a pale blue sky. What a difference a day makes. I followed the same route, wondering if I would spot the mysterious creature again. I reached that same turn in the road but was disappointed. I waited for a bit, hoping it might turn up, after all it was the same time of day as yesterday’s walk and I’m not the only one who’s a creature of habit. Nothing. But then, I heard it; a raucous yowl from the rooftop of a nearby house. Perched on the ridge tiles, and watching me with disdain, was a peacock. This must have been the mysterious creature that had crossed my path. He glared down at me, sharp eyes glinting. His plumed head looked ridiculously small against that long body and tail, which must have measured over two metres. The peacock ruffled his feathers, and even from this distance I could make out the metallic blue plumage on the neck and body, and the striking ‘eyes’ on the tail.To reach the vantage point of a roof, the pheasant needs the power of his grey flight feathers. The striking fringed feathers on top are known as coverts and can arch into a fan which reaches the ground on either side. There was little chance of such an elaborate display without a coterie of peahens around, and this chap seemed to be solo, whether a pet or an escapee turned feral. What a shame. A group of peacocks – whether you call them a ‘muster’, a ‘pride’ or, best of all, ‘an ostentation’, would certainly brighten a winter afternoon.

OLIVE AND TED: A CHANGE OF SCENERY

A

fter a very successful six years at number 7, Amanda Redwin is moving her business Olive and Ted Interiors around the corner to number 3 Brook Court, Brook Street, Bishops Waltham. Last year Amanda's husband Richard took over number 3 from The Toy Box and opened Goose Home, his bespoke, handmade furniture business, which has gone from strength to strength. Earlier this year however, Amanda was thrown one of life's curve balls which has led to a new business model for Olive and Ted Interiors and the subsequent move. The new focus of the business is the Olive and Ted brand of fabrics which are designed by Amanda and inspired by the English countryside. Described by Amanda as 'modern-country' in style, the fabrics feature animals, flora and fauna in simplified, hand drawn designs printed in a palette of colours ranging from bright pink and yellow to more subtle grey and taupe. The designs are printed onto a cotton-linen mix fabric which is perfect for curtains, blinds, cushions and lampshades. Amanda says “I started designing in the summer when I was caring for my father who was seriously ill. I had a lot of time on my hands and couldn't sew as I would usually do so I began sketching and

taught myself to use Photoshop. When Dad passed away I had about five completed designs.” Amanda went on to have samples digitally printed and intended to add these to the other fabric collections in stock in the boutique, however daughter Hayleigh had other ideas. “I told Mum that if she was going to have her own fabric collection then it should be the only one we stock.” Since then Amanda has continued to design and produce more prints for her collection which are now also featured on her own exclusive range of kitchen textiles, ceramics and stationery.“It came to the point where our painted furniture in the boutique was there mainly to display the fabric rather than being our biggest selling product, whereas in Goose Home we had a lot of furniture which was screaming out to be dressed.” Number 3 will therefore continue to sell Richards furniture alongside Amanda's fabrics and will re-open on Saturday 5th January 2019. Number 7 will become a furniture sale room for a period of 3 weeks to the end of January, selling off a large amount of furniture Amanda has hoarded over the past few years. She says “Most of the furniture will be unpainted but we can paint it for you or sell you the paint to paint it yourself so everyone is happy!”

ADVICE COLUMN FROM CITIZENS ADVICE WINCHESTER DISTRICT Lesley Rose, Advice Services Manager for Citizens Advice Winchester District, advises on your rights when buying goods from an online marketplace. I BOUGHT A PAIR OF TRAINERS FROM A PRIVATE SELLER ON AN ONLINE MARKETPLACE The advert said they were ASICS but when they arrived the branding said Basics. They are clearly not what was advertised, are terrible quality and not fit for purpose. Do I have any rights? What can I do? If you’re shopping online from an individual seller, the principle of “buyer beware” applies - which means you are purchasing subject to all defects, and the seller does not have to declare problems. However, the seller must not misrepresent the goods, for example, by claiming they’re a certain popular brand when they are not. Because your trainers are not as described in the advert, you may have grounds to ask for your money back. First, try to fix the issue by contacting the seller to explain the problem, let them know your rights and that you would like your money back. Should this get you nowhere, check to see if the online marketplace has its own protection and disputes resolution system. Finally, if neither of these work for you, consider making a claim to the court, known as a small claim. There is guidance on how to do this on the Citizens Advice website at www. citizensadvice.org.uk. If you need advice, Citizens Advice Winchester District offers a drop-in service in Winchester and Bishops Waltham, and also runs a weekly outreach in Denmead, Wickham and Alresford. NEW HAMPSHIRE RETIREMENT VILLAGE IS SET TO IMPROVE RESIDENTS’ QUALITY OF LIFE Independent living, great facilities and help on site, if and when you need it, that’s the promise as Hampshire’s latest retirement development nears completion. Friary Meadow, a luxury retirement village being constructed in Titchfield, is now just weeks away from completion. Friary Meadow, nestled between Southampton and Portsmouth and just a stone’s throw away from the coast, is set to open its doors early in 2019 as part of a joint project between independent retirement living specialist, Oak Retirement, and real estate fund manager, Frogmore.

needs change and, because they own the property they live in, also protect their equity. Dr. Stephen Ladyman, founder of Oak Retirement and a former Minister of Health responsible for Social Care, said: “After more than a year of hard work on the construction front, it’s wonderful to see Friary Meadow coming to fruition and to finally be able to show people what they can expect from our luxury development.

The £35m development, named in reference to the nearby Abbey in Titchfield and the likely historic use of the fields around it, will offer a selection of 86 luxury homes including apartments, bungalows and townhouses. Since the start of construction in June last year, where an official groundbreaking ceremony took place and was attended by Mayor of Fareham, Councillor Geoff Fazackarley and the Mayoress Mrs Tina Fazackarley, Friary Meadow has made huge strides in development ahead of opening in early January. “This is a really exciting time for us and we’re encouraging all of those who are getting close to retirement or thinking about retirement, to come and visit the development to see first-hand how future residents of Friary Meadow will be able to enjoy the many benefits of an independent, worry-free retirement.” “Residents will enjoy the use of a restaurant, café, bar and movie room all on site. Next door in the adjacent Holiday Inn the Spirit Health Club is available to those who want to join offering a swimming pool and gymnasium. People living at Friary Meadow are free to be as active or as sociable as they like – they can live their retirement exactly as they like.” Now visitors can book to see the first show property and tour some of the other completed properties and get great deals if they reserve off plan. Friary Meadow is based on the ‘extra-care’ living model, as recommended by the Department of Health. It aims to give older people the opportunity to retain their independence for longer, including their financial independence. Residents can access additional flexible services as their

Apartments start from £375,000, bungalows from £485,000 and townhouses from £595,000. Full details of fees and charges are available on request.
