MOTORING At the Winchester Auto Barn we aim to provide good value without compromising the quality that we want to deliver – a good reputation is very important to us. Our MOT rate is £48.50 but any pre 1980 car is reduced to £28.50.We have done this as the law now states that cars built 40 years ago don’t need an MOT but we think it’s sensible if they do so we have reduced the rate to encourage people to get an MOT.We are keen to get established and believe our service rates are very competitive so please give us a chance and call us for an estimate.
WINCHESTER AUTOBARN AND DRIVERS CLUB The Winchester Auto Barn and Drivers’ Club is a new company that has been formed specifically to create a local hub and destination for all motorists who need a service, repairs or just an MOT, and also for classic car owners and enthusiasts. We want to form a community for people to basically come and show off their pride and joy, meet kindred spirits, source their next purchase/ parts or just ‘hang’ and talk car.
On the sales side the idea is to specialise in vehicles from the 1960’s through to the 1980’s. Most importantly we will endeavour to carry high quality stock of affordable classics but with a genuine no issues history. All of the hugely experienced staff (from Hill Farm Garage, the previous business on the site) have been kept on and are continuing to service, repair and MOT modern vehicles such as Mercedes Benz, Range Rover, Audi, BMW etc...We do specialise particularly in Mercedes Benz and we are an Approved Independent Mercedes Benz Service Agent utilising their latest service software.
The garage and site is very much a work in progress and we are hoping to get approval on expanding the showroom and creating a comfortable retro waiting area as well as car storage. We will decorate the building with genuine period automobilia such as posters, luggage, signs etc...This will all be for sale. We also plan to have regular breakfast club meetings at the garage, the next one is Saturday 30th March 9am – 12pm.There is a catering van providing coffees, teas, pastries and butties. There is ample parking so please feel to free drop in and see what we’re up to. www.winchesterautobarn.com Tel: 01962 677779 Winchester Auto Barn, Sutton Scotney, Winchester, SO21 3NS

FOOD & DRINK had the opportunity to sit with the judges to gain insight into what makes a good entry. Level one student, Brooke Savage, reflected on the competition: “I have learnt a lot and now understand the amount of work that goes into making a quality sausage. They judge it in so much detail, looking at the texture and the skin. Being involved has definitely given me tips I’ll be able to use when I make my own sausages.”
THE GREAT HAMPSHIRE SAUSAGE AND PIE COMPETITION In February a panel of expert judges from across the UK gathered at Eastleigh College to participate in The Great Hampshire Sausage and Pie Competition 2019 organised by local food group Hampshire Fare. The two-day event received an impressive 205 entries from the county’s butchers and pie makers. There were twelve categories in the competition including Traditional Pork Sausage, Hampshire Sausage, Speciality Sausage, Beef and Lamb Sausage, Cold-eating Pie, Hot-eating Pie, Charcuterie,Young Sausage Maker and Black Pudding.
texture, shrinkage, taste and smell. Each product went in front of a panel of judges before then being referred to the chief judges for further assessment. Judges were particularly impressed by the quality of the entries and also the unique flavour combinations. Claire Holland, Chief Judge, commented: “Overall the standard of the entries has definitely risen compared to last year, particularly in the Young Sausage Maker category. Competitions such as this are an invaluable way for butchers to access the expert opinion of experienced and knowledgeable people within the industry.”
The competition is organised by local food group Hampshire Fare to celebrate quality ingredients and products and those involved in making them as Tracy Nash, Commercial Manager of Hampshire Fare explains: “Every business that enters this competition benefits so much regardless of what they win. The event shines a bright light on the industry and the hardworking and talented butchers and pie makers that work in it.” The competition is sponsored by Lucas Ingredients, Dalziel, Santa Maria, Mozzo, Ringwood Brewery, Eastleigh College, Holiday Inn Winchester, Danebury Wine and New Forest Spring Water. With judging now complete, entrants must wait until late February when the winners will be announced at the ticketed awards ceremony being held at Holiday Inn Winchester.
Thirteen judges assessed the entries against strict criteria including appearance, filling,

ENTERTAINMENT has been run by Simon and Kate Daws since 2000. It features in The Good Pub Guide and The Michelin Guide to Pubs. Full of old rustic charm the large dining room is very cosy and warm thanks to its wood burner, even on a cold day. The stag’s head on the wall is certainly a talking point for the children. “Where’s its body?” Heidi asks. “On the other side of the wall,” I reply. Caroline has a roasted squash, aubergine and tomato lasagne with pesto. “My favourite vegetarian lasagne by far,” she reveals. Her rice pudding for dessert is equally satisfying. Heidi and I have fish and chips while Henry and Harriett go for homemade pizza.
CHELTENHAM - A FAMILY BREAK The Regency and Victorian splendour of Cheltenham is only a couple of hours away from where we live, making it an extremely attractive place to visit. Composer Gustav Holst was born in the spa town in 1874 and his father, Adolph von Holst was organist at All Saints' Church, Pittville. We stay at The Cheltenham Townhouse in Pittville Lawn; home to some of the finest examples of 19th century architecture. It has been owned by Jayne and Adam Lillywhite for the past 16 years. “We bought it when I was expecting my daughter,” recalls Jayne. “It was a nursing home. We have 22 bedrooms and four studios.” With its freshly painted exterior, large sash windows allowing good amounts of light into its rooms together with high ceilings it’s a wonderfully opulent environment. “I love it,” says Harriett (7) who already has a good appreciation for the finer things in life. Both the town and the park are minutes away. The hotel car park takes away the worry of finding a space elsewhere. We check in at reception and are then whisked up to our family room with a king size bed for mummy and daddy bear, two singles for the little bears and a futon for baby Henry bear. Ah. All nicely dressed and very welcoming. Thumbs up for the bath from Caroline. Our deprived children (who don’t have a television) instantly spot the flat screen on the wall and need to watch it. So we relent. It’s just nice to be able to have a cup of tea in the room without the little darlings wanting our attention, even if this is for just a few moments. Time to explore, so we make our
way to Pittville Park where the children enjoy playing on the swings and slides. In the morning the hotel provides a splendid breakfast in its comfortable dining room with jazz playing in the background. We try the full English breakfast and the smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, which are delicious. “I want sausages and bacon,” demands little Henry (2). He will learn to be polite but he is proving just that little bit more challenging than his sisters who are now at the bickering stage.
Anyway, looking at the positives about our young children’s behaviour they do manage to sit at the table for long enough for us all to eat our breakfasts. But then they need the toilet, I have to leave my tea and that’s that. We then have two enjoyable lunches so quite a bit of sitting around for the children but they cope. The Gloucester Old Spot is a delightful country pub on the Tewkesbury Road, which
At The Old Courthouse in County Court Road there is a decidedly legal approach to proceedings. No surprise there as it was the county court until fairly recently. We find ourselves actually dining in the old court room, all the original furnishings still in place including plaques denoting: Defendant, Jury and Press. Caroline has linguine with wild mushrooms. I have roast beef and Yorkshire pudding; the largest Yorkshire pudding I have seen. Harriett has pasta with cheese and tomato, Heidi goes for a beefburger and Henry insists on having pigs in blankets with Yorkshire pudding. All very tasty but the children are unable to sit down for too long and so begrudgingly we have to leave without any desserts. Lock ‘em up m’lud! Cheltenham is a shopper’s delight and exclusive brands can be found along its high street. When we arrive home Heidi (5) realises that she has left her much loved unicorn slippers under the bed at the hotel. Hotel owner Jayne very kindly finds them and posts them back to her, making for a very happy Heidi, for which we are eternally grateful. https://www.cheltenhamtownhouse.com/ https://thegloucesteroldspot.co.uk https://www.brunningandprice.co.uk/ oldcourthouse/ Written by Tim Saunders

MONTEVERDI’S 1610 VESPERS OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN AT WINCHESTER CATHEDRAL
QUEEN ELIZABETH SPRING MARATHON AND HALF - 31 MARCH The Queen Elizabeth Marathon and Half Marathon returns once again this March to Queen Elizabeth Country Park, featuring forest, trails, hills and views! Run entirely on a half-marathon course within the country park (and the adjacent, aptly named "Head Down" plantation) this is a trail run along well kept trails that even after the long winter should be nicely runnable. There are some hilly challenges that will take you on journey of over 500 metres of elevation gain over that half-marathon loop. Once away from the busy front part of the country park, you will find yourself in the quiet peaceful forest, often with glimpses of wildlife. Later, as you are on the last high point before you drop down to the finish area, there are long views through the clearings to the Solent and Isle of Wight. Both routes run on the same course, with the marathon being two loops. The route is fully marked with signs and frequent repeater tape and multiple water/feed stations along the way every 4 miles or so. Mostly this is off-road, with short stretch of tarmac between the country park and "Head Down". Please be aware that the quiet country lane roads are not closed to traffic. You are welcome to take your time if you wish, but please be finished by 4:30PM (that's 7 hours!). There are expected to be around 200 entrants in each race, so there will be plenty of people around without it being busy. Simplified maps of the course will also be available on the day, but if you want to be properly familiar with the route before raceday, please join us on one of recces that we run in the weeks before race-day. News of these will be on our Facebook page. The route has no particularly technical challenges. The first climb at around ½ mile is short and steep, and often walked by those saving their energy for later. Given the time of year, there will likely be some slippery stretches from time to time, but none too long or particularly steep. The entire route should be on runnable terrain, without any stiles or gates to climb over. Take sufficient warm and waterproof clothing as the weather dictates. Footwear is advised to be trail shoes with medium tread - not suitable for running spikes. You may wish to carry your own water containers to top-up at the water stations, especially on the marathon. At the finish, you will receive the bespoke QE Spring Marathon or Half medal. As always, this year's medal will be an all new "Spring" theme design. Trophies are awarded to 1st 2nd and 3rd Female and Male. Age group awards to first V40,V50 and V60 Female and Male. Team prize for first team/club to have three people finish. Event start time: 9.30, registration open from: 8.30. For more information and to enter, please visit: www.fullonsport.com/ event/qe-spring-marathon-and-half--2019/profile
Southampton Philharmonic Choir present this jewel of the early Baroque in the magnificent setting of Winchester Cathedral on Saturday 23 March at 7.30pm. Performing alongside them are the Southampton University Philharmonic Choir, The Pilgrims' School Chamber Choir, soloists sopranos Charlotte Ashley, Lucinda Cox; tenors Peter Davoren, James Robinson; baritones Edmund Saddington and Simon Gallear and the Corporation of Musick, a cornett and sackbut ensemble dedicated to recreating the sounds and styles of the music once heard in the royal courts, churches and streets of Renaissance and Baroque Europe.Vespers, or evening prayers, are part of the Hours of the Divine Office, a set of daily prayers of the Catholic Church, which have remained structurally unchanged for hundreds of years. Monteverdi’s Vespers of the Blessed Virgin are based around several biblical texts traditionally part of the liturgy for several Marian Feasts. This piece is regarded as one of the most ambitious works of religious music before Bach, because of its huge scale, including multiple vocal parts and seven soloists. Although much of the rich choral music is traditional by the standards of the day, the Vespers was ground breaking in its introduction of brass, wind and string instruments, but also of the very florid solo lines associated with the new techniques of Opera. The Vespers is very much a transitional piece, introducing new Baroque features with dramatic expressiveness of vocal virtuosity but retaining many of the glories of 16th Century polyphony. That potent cocktail is part of the great ongoing appeal of the work. For more information visit www.southamptonphil.org or call the Cathedral Box Office 01962 857 275 to get your tickets.

This doesn’t just mean just music and flower power, but there was a lot of change going on the sixties; and don’t forget we won the world football cup! Also, the Beatles first record was released; the first James Bond film was released; colour TV broadcasts began; Dr Who began; there was Carnaby Street; Muhammed Ali; the first heart transplant; a man landed on the moon; Monty Python starts; and many others. The choices are unlimited.
One of the most cherished performers on the folk scene today, Steve Turner is a versatile singer and sophisticated musician who presents a wide variety of material with passion and differing shades of delivery. An assured entertainer, he has the ability to hold the listener rapt as the stories unfold. Steve’s career is amazing: from The Geordie’s folk band in the 1960s, through winning a Melody Maker competition in 1979 to playing and singin as fresh as ever today, recently recording with the likes of Eliza Carthy and Martin Simpson. Steve brings a new depth and quality to song accompaniments on the English concertina but is also a multi-instrumentalist who accompanies himself on the cittern and plays tunes on mandolin and banjo. The club is held in a small venue which, while part of its charm means space is limited - booking is strongly advised. Hambledon Folk Club offers a friendly and intimate setting enjoyed by artists and audience alike: many performers comment on the warmth of their reception and a true folk club atmosphere. Nowadays the club features national and even international guest performers while invariably there is the traditional floor-spot session before the main act for local or visiting performers to each sing a song or play a tune or two. FEATURE
A BAGGY DOG STORY T
he gadget that Lord and Master (LaM) had stuck in her ear registered a whopping 104. She dragged herself off to the bedroom and LaM thoughtfully switched on the TV for her; “Look Sweetings, it’s that depressing musical you like – the one where Wolverine sings.” And so, lying in bed, a little delirious, she’s idly watching the cast of Les Mis skipping out of the screen and reappearing on the duvet, to prance over the ridges made by her legs. During her recent bout of glandular fever, she imagined she saw Cher and Meryl Streep cavorting over the sitting room rug. Here we go again, she thinks. A little later, the water glass is empty on her bedside table and she’s relieved to hear the back door slam. Heralding the return of LaM from his obligatory dog walk, usually her domain, along with most of the domestic tasks, LaM has manfully stepped into the breach caused by her inconvenient dose of the ‘flu. Quite what obscure strain it must be that’s laid her low she can’t imagine, having trotted off to the supermarket pharmacy for their jabs this and every winter, for years. “Darling, please..” she croaks as he explodes into the bedroom, bellowing; “DOG POO! Quite honestly, I think the world’s gone mad! I flicked it with a stick, away from the path and right underneath a patch of brambles that I’m fairly convinced no family will be picnicking under anytime soon. But no! That, apparently, is not good enough! I’m to gather it into a plastic bag, so that it can go to a landfill and take millions of years to break down! I thought that the idea was to cut back on plastics. At least my way, the elements can do their thing – in a few days it’ll be gone.” He took a breath. “Thirsty – please…” feebly she pointed at the bedside table. “Shouting at me, they were. Said they’d got it on their shoes, they did. But it wasn’t our dog’s poo – it must have been some other dog’s poo.” LaM seized the glass and stomped off downstairs to the kitchen, returning with it full to the brim of cold water. She gulped it all down. It was, quite possibly, the most delicious drink of her entire life. He continued as if there’d been no pause; “And on the way back to the car park, I came across a bush festooned with these bags,
bulging with their noxious loads. Like some dystopian Christmas tree. How can that be an improvement on what I did – I ask you?” Even in her sickly state, she thought of the rolls of biodegradable poo bags that she had in various colours, in various coat pockets. Never without them. But she didn’t have the strength to speak on the subject. In a couple of days’ time, she’d be well enough to debate it. Probably tell dear old LaM that his method was very à la Forestry Commission and quite de rigueur at some National Trust properties. But in the meantime she just wanted to put her hot dry cheek against her cool smooth pillow and sleep. Ordinarily a huge fan, she also wished Hugh Jackman would take his troupe and troop off back into the television. Awaking from her nap she found LaM perched on the edge of the bed, fresh glass of water in one hand and two paracetamol in the other. He helped her sit up and a damp flannel he must have placed whilst she slept, fell from her forehead. The dog had also sneaked into the bedroom, sliding from the floor and up onto the bed with remarkable skill, almost defying the laws of physics. Stroking her spaniel’s silky head with one hand, whilst the other was stroked by LaM was both soothing and gratifying by turn. “I’ve ordered your favourite curry. Now, I know that you probably haven’t much appetite, but I read somewhere that spices are extremely good for colds and ‘flu. You should try to eat a little bit when I bring it back. I’ll leave the dog up here as she seems very concerned about you. As am I, Sweetings. Sorry about my rant earlier. I’ve found the poo bags and I’ll make sure that I’m armed with them for the morning walk. You’re not to worry about a thing.” She wasn’t worried and, actually, the thought of a curry didn’t fill her with disgust. But somewhat removed from reality, she slid down her pillows as the dog sighed and snuggled up to her. LaM departed. Jean Valjean et al continued their performance on her bed, only now, she observed with slight detachment, they had tiny poo bags in their little hands.. But the dog was taking no notice of them and neither, in her pleasant delirium she decided, would she. © 2019 Lucia Foster-Found

COLLABORATION OR MURDER: WHICH IS IT TO BE? A series of murders occur in rural France…. but are they linked? Have old wartime wounds healed or are they still open and festering? Sons of Death is the latest in Titchfield Festival Theatre’s New Play Season, a brand new thriller set across the English Channel and written by Steve Harris (whose previous productions for the theatre include The Pub Quiz and Ask Me Another). Steve is a committed Francophile and lives in the region of the Morvan, France where the play is set. To be a collaborator is maybe not what it seems. Is this a perfect murder or will the audience decide ‘who dunnit’? The play is certain to keep everyone who sees the performance thoroughly intrigued and guessing until the end of the show.
OPEN GARDENS NEAR YOU
THE DEAN HOUSE, SPARSHOLT 1ST MARCH - 30TH SEPTEMBER £10. Children free, by arrangement only. Flowering cherry trees, statuesque copper beech and tulip trees grace the sweeping lawns at The Deane House (not open), leading the eye to the landscape beyond. This spacious garden entices you to meander from one level to another. The walled garden is best in June when the heady perfume of roses
Kevin Fraser, Artistic Director of Titchfield Festival Theatre says, “Sons of Death is a good story – and a great thriller to boot. The play is of interest historically, revealing the intense and bloody divisions in villages and towns across France that became so evident at the end of the Second World War. This dichotomy arose from the conflicts and mistrust between those who chose, for whatever reason, to collaborate with the Gestapo and those who fought against the Nazi regime. We are delighted to be performing this excellent new production which is sure to keep the audience guessing right until the very end.” Sons of Death opens on Wednesday 6th March 2019 until Saturday 16th March at 7.30pm in the Oak Theatre, Titchfield Festival Theatre, St Margarets Lane, Titchfield PO14 4BG. For more information, please go to http:// titchfieldfestivaltheatre.com/or contact our Box Office on 01329 556156. fills the air. Stained glass and modern water features abound. CRAWLEY GARDENS, WINCHESTER 19TH & 22ND APRIL £7.50 Children Free. Light Refreshments. Crawley is an exceptionally pretty period village nestling in chalk downland with thatched houses, C14 church and village pond with ducks. The spring gardens are Bay Tree House, Little Court and Paige Cottage; the summer gardens are Bay Tree House, Paige Cottage and Tanglefoot; providing seasonal interest of varied character, and with traditional and contemporary approaches to landscape and planting. Most of the gardens have beautiful country views and there are other good gardens to be seen from the road. BLUEBELL WOOD, ALTON 3RD & 4TH MAY £5. Children free. Refreshments available. Unique 100 acre ancient bluebell woodland.
Families can experience nature throughout the seasons with the Hampshire IOW Wildlife Trust. Learn about wildlife, gain practical skills and have a chance to play in the great outdoors. Activities will include: den building, fire lighting, campfire cooking, bird watching, bug hunting, map reading, pond dipping, woodcraft and more. Linda Seekings, who runs the club says “I ran this club throughout 2018 and was great to see the same families each week. The children helped to come up with ideas of what we could make and do. We created all sorts of fantastic things from natural materials, experimented with different campfire cooking ideas as well as looking at the wildlife around us. It was great for them to see the seasonal changes in the woods, meadows and ponds.” The club will run from 3.45pm till 5.15pm every Thursday. Booking is essential – phone 02380 667929 or email testwoodlakes@hiwwt. org.uk Each session costs £6.50 per child. If you are a keen walker you will have much to explore on the long meandering paths and rides dotted with secluded seats.
Those who enjoy a more leisurely pace will experience the perfume of the carpet of blue, listen to the birdsong and watch the contrasting light through the trees nearer to the entrance of the woods. More information can be found at www.ngs.org.uk

HOW TO RENOVATE YOUR LAWN AFTER A CHALLENGING SUMMER fewer lawn seeds and is much more economical. Top-dressing creates the ideal environment for the new seed to establish and will greatly aid the recovery of your lawn. We recommend 5kg per square meter. It’s back-breaking work but well worth the investment.
L
ast year was particularly challenging for lawns. We suffered a late, wet and cold spring which was soon followed by many weeks of high temperatures and drought. Lawns died back and I am now seeing many that have still not recovered. If growth has not returned by now then your lawn will need some work to restore it. Spring is a great time to renovate your lawn. As professional lawn care specialists, we have the necessary knowledge and skills to turn even the most unattractive patch of grass back to a beautiful green, lush lawn again. Read on to learn how. WHAT WILL IT TAKE TO RESTORE YOUR LAWN? Lawns took a beating over the dry, hot summer months. The warm and wet weather which will return soon creates the ideal conditions for your lawn to recover quickly from spring renovations. Grass needs warmth, moisture and good levels of light in order to grow well. These conditions begin to return in early spring, making now the ideal time to improve your lawn. If your lawn is suffering with bare patches or weak grass growth in certain areas, understanding the cause of these problems is the first step to correcting them. Bare patches and weak growth are often symptoms of compaction, where the soil lacks air pockets which restricts root development. Grass growing on compacted soil is more susceptible to disease and is less drought tolerant. The compacted soil drains poorly due to the lack of air gaps so you see stunted growth and weak grass. THE SOLUTION? PROFESSIONAL LAWN CARE Aerate your lawn before introducing new grass plants by overseeding. Before you think about over-seeding you may want to consider whether your lawn needs a good raking, or for larger lawns, mechanical scarification. Not all lawns need scarification but if they do it’s really important to do it now before the dry summer weather returns. Both scarification and aeration create the best conditions for overseeding. Unlike re-seeding, over-seeding works with the existing lawn and blends in with existing grass. It’s also far less labour intensive, uses
Most lawns have a lot of new weeds and moss following last summer when grass died back in the drought allowing moss and weeds to germinate. Newly germinated grass seed can be killed by the treatments used to kill lawn weeds. Older, existing lawn grasses are robust enough to withstand these treatments. Getting timing and quantities right is essential to success. Remember that once germination begins your new grass seeds need moisture to survive. They won’t be able to manage times without water until they have well established roots. If it doesn’t rain then you need to remember to keep them watered for the first few weeks. WHAT ELSE DOES PROFESSIONAL LAWN CARE OFFER? Grass is just like every other plant, it needs the right nutrition to survive.Your soil type will affect the availability of nutrients in the soil to feed and sustain your restored lawn. As an independent lawn care company we can offer you a free lawn survey to properly assess the absolute best type of lawn care regime for your specific lawn. Any nutritional issues should be addressed before over-seeding and lawn renovation works begin. WETTING AGENTS How do lawn wetting agents work and why use them? Prolonged hot dry weather affects the soil’s ability to absorb and retain water (this is called hydrophobic soil). Wetting agents encourage water to remain in the soil next to the root-zone of your grass which means less water wastage through better water retention. Shrekfeet Lawn and Garden Services is proud to be the local independent lawn care specialist in your area. Lawn recovery is extremely labour intensive work and many of the specialist treatments are not available through DIY chains or on the internet. PLEASE ACT NOW We genuinely do have a limit on the number of treatment slots we can offer due to the amount of work involved in successful lawn recovery work, so please get in touch now and book your free lawn survey. GARDEN Europe and includes deciduous, climbing shrubs regarded as durable, easy-care, vigorous and free-flowering. They are ideal for planting on Chalk, Clay, Loam and Sand. The Clematis Texensis Group is a series of ‘trumpet’ shaped, late flowering that produce hundreds of flowers that nod, look up and straight at you.
EAST MEON GARDENING CLUB NEWS: MARCH In early February, Marcus Dancer gave a fabulous talk on Clematis with a Pruning Demonstration. Clematis is a World Wide plant with societies celebrating it all over the world. It is considered to be one of the FROM LEFT TO RIGHT: most popular STEWART BUSSELL, MARCUS DANCER, and versatile ALISTAIR DUDLEY-WARD garden plants, able to be grown on walls, pergolas, frames, in containers or even allowed to scramble through trees and shrubs. Some of the plants can withstand temperatures of -34 degrees! There are Clematis which will flower in Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter and can range in height from 15cm – 9m (6” – 28 ft). They will tolerate either sun or partial shade and are mostly hardy and moderately easy to grow. However, what a Clematis dislikes above all, is to be waterlogged, preferring a waterretentive soil which is well drained.
TITCHFIELD GOES NATIONAL
Some gardeners advocate that it is helpful to shade the roots by placing old crocks/stones or tiles at the base of the plant. However, this is probably not to be advised as these can provide safe haven for slugs and snails., who are quite partial to tender, young, green shoots! Maintenance of your clematis plants will benefit from an application of a potassiumrich fertiliser from Spring onwards, such as Vitax-Q4, Osmacote, or Fish, Blood and Bone and then mulch with organic matter such as well-rotted manure or garden compost. If you are planting in containers, feeding on a regular basis is essential. Clematis fall into 3 categories when it comes to pruning. If left unpruned, clematis can become a tangled mass of stems with a bare base and flowers above eye level.
‘Fragrant Oberon’ grows from 30cms to 45 cms, is sweetly scented and ideal for a container. It needs a sunny aspect but sheltered and has the benefit of being evergreen. It is interesting in that it flowers from the bottom of the stem. Another Spring Clematis, ‘Early Sensation’ has white flowers, evergreen leaves and can grow to 2.5metres. . It will flower April, May and June. Likes a sunny to semishaded position.. Do not plant any deeper than the plants original planting.
Clematis in Group 1 flower early in the year and should be pruned after flowering in mid to late Spring. Clematis in Group 2 are the large-flowered hybrids that flower in May to June and should be pruned in late Winter or early Spring after the first flush of flowers in Summer. Clematis in Group 3 flower in late summer on growth made in that season and should be pruned in late winter or early Spring when buds show signs of growth. This method is suitable for herbaceous clematis. The Viticella group of clematis originates from Southern
It is also very important to water regularly during periods of dry weather, particularly so during the first few seasons after planting. The main points that the audience took away with them was that all pruning happens during January, February, March and the importance of feeding, mulching and watering in dry spells. When it comes to choice, well, quite literally, the World is your oyster.
After their success in 2018 when the Titchfield in Bloom Team led their village to Gold and became the overall Gold winners in the South & South East this year the village of Titchfield is to be judged twice.
located in Scotland, Ulster,Yorkshire, the North East and South West.
The Team were informed by the Royal Horticultural Society that Titchfield had been nominated as the large village representing the South & South East in the National in Bloom competition – quite an achievement. In July Titchfield will be judged by the South & South East judges and later by the R.H.S National judges. (L-R) LEFT TO RIGHT PAMELA, CORAL, GLORIA. JANE AND NICKY
Clematis Montana blooms profusely from late Spring to early Summer. One particular Clematis that Marcus mentioned is ‘Cassandra’ which grows to 1 metre, is dark navy blue and has a delicious scent. Another fabulously scented Clematis is ‘Chris’’ which grows up to 1 metre and is of the herbaceous variety bearing shorter stems but more flowers than usually found in plants of this group. This clematis is also wonderful for attracting bees and other wildlife. Clematis Aromatica is a bush forming, highly scented non-climbing shrub growing 1 to 2 metres. It Is non-clinging variety and can be grown in a pot or border.
The other 5 large villages chosen by the RHS in the National competition are
The evening rounded off with a vote of thanks given by Stewart Bussell.
The judges will be awarding marks on environmental protection and conservation of the natural environment and wildlife habitats, water conservation, recycling, heritage and community. Also of course the quality of the floral displays around the village. The 8 members of the Titchfield in Bloom team are already working hard to ensure success for their village in this prestigious Nationwide competition.

HAMPSHIRE MUM:
SNOW SAVVY?
T
he annual winter snowfall heralded the usual chaos didn’t it? Despite the fact that we live well within the northern hemisphere the white stuff always catches us unawares ‘What snow, here? Can’t be!’
Yep, same as most years.Yet, still everything grinds to a halt and the news reports air toward the dawning of a third ice age, prompting panic buying of bread, milk and toilet rolls - those well known staples of survival. Personally, I adore the snow, and marvel at the multitudinous ice crystals that throw a softening sparkling blanket of white, mauve and pale blue over the landscape. It’s beautiful for a day or two, but then the good old thaw and freeze with it’s brown slush turning to black ice. I really don’t do ice, I’m no Jane Torvill; the ice I favour is to be found floating iceberg like in a gin and tonic. Call it age if you like, but I have developed a heightened fear of falling. If I inadvertently come across ice on a walk I’ll pigeon step laboriously, clinging on to vegetation or even passers by such is my fear of it.
Intolerant of my frozen fear and the fact that the Pagan Pup is not at all keen to do a rendition of Bambi on ice, The Husband will disappear in that Edmund Hillary kind of way dragging the Pup along.“You better stay here Sandra, you know you’re pathetic on ice”. He’s quite right, for once. Having developed an almost sixth sense for the stuff, I am pathetic on ice. So this time I got to stay indoors, others were not so fortunate.
Take The Immaculate Niece for example; rather ironically, she is part of the team at our international airport in charge of snow - making sure everything runs smoothly during the season of the white stuff.
But snow does not discriminate, despite being fully equipped to cope, apart from the short term loan of a snow plough that is, it took her sixteen hours from airport to her Hampshire village home including an over night camp on the floor of a Holiday Inn. Likewise, my Mary Poppins chum (so called because she carries a bag filled with every possible thing to cope with any eventuality) found herself, along with a companion, stranded on the M3 for eight hours. Although they had ample supplies of chocolate she did acknowledge that the lack of a ‘She Wee’ or suitable vessel did rather define the whole experience.
But even in desperate times there is more to snow than meets the eye. We may not be savvy with it here in Blighty but how savvy was the greater force that commanded snow to fall right now.
Yes of course there is a serious side to dangerous conditions but at a time when we seem split by all things Brexit and beyond it is lovely to know that we can all still pull together. Whether it’s in the form supportive texts, towing, digging or pushing those stuck or providing welcome shelter and fodder we are more snow savvy than we realise. I’m still not going out though. COMMUNITY Edinburgh Fringe show “See Novellie, Hear Novellie, Speak Novellie” In 2017 Pierre’s show was observational comedy for people who think they don't like observational comedy, which got 5 Stars from the Metro. His 2018 show is satire for people without a team, for which he got more stunningly good reviews. He’s written and appeared on The Mash Report (BBC Two), to mention just one of a very long list of on and off screen TV credits, and has been nominated for Best New Comer and twice for Best Club Comic at the Chortle Awards. Pierre’s views don’t please anyone 100% of the time, but then who exactly is his demographic? Other white South African Manxmen?

That’s what their website says, and it lives up to it with ease. BISHOPS WALTHAM GARDENING CLUB ENTRY FOR MARCH
So you can rest assured that another night of top comedy at the best comedy club in the area is, once again, guaranteed. 'Sunflower' was intended to be a 100% pure comedy show with no agendas, no left, no right and no sad stories – a show named after his favourite Beach Boys album and written to contrast the horror of world events. A brutal rollercoaster of events derailed this plan and Garrett was faced with the choice of cancelling the show or finding the path to complete it in a few short weeks. Sunflower emerged as a testament to the power of comedy to carry us through whatever life throws at us and became one of the most talked about, critically acclaimed and powerful shows of Edinburgh 2018. The second act for the evening is Pierre Novellie, who will be at The Soho Theatre from the 2nd to the 6th of April with his hit them to grow on, all that care and attention (and money!) has been wasted.

A FROG, TWO FISH AND A FLOCK OF SPARROWS BY CLAIRE THURLOW
T
he cold spell is over, and milder weather brings a swathe of mist to the lane. For animals living outside, sub-zero temperatures are a matter of life and death. For days the pond was frozen over and I feared for its inhabitants.
It’s a small garden pond, less than a metre wide, yet it’s deceptively deep.Tucked between a steep bank and an old brick wall (remains of a long-gone house) this man-made feature looks surprisingly natural. The plastic edges of the liner are camouflaged by clumps of ferns, mossy rocks and tangles of ivy. Like a miniature Scottish loch, the depths are dark and impenetrable. The ice has thawed but the water is still as glass. Peering in, I make out two orange shapes cruising below the surface. The goldfish have survived! And they’re not alone. At the opposite end of the pond, body submerged, but eyes fixed on me, is a large frog. The goldfish rise towards the food flakes, ignoring the frog who is as big as both of them combined. The trio seem to co-exist peacefully enough. Netting has been installed to keep out the heron and nosy foxes, but there is a gap at one edge, an easy exit for the frog to hop out and search for insects among the rocks or nearby woodpile. I leave them to it, as I have work to do.Ten minutes walk away is the little house I’m renovating, and another day of wallpaperstripping beckons. It might be solitary work, but in fact I’m never alone. Arriving at the front gate I’m greeted by exited cheeping and chirruping from hedges on both sides, as well as from a ‘look-out’ perched on the television aerial. Being greeted by a flock of house sparrows is a noisy affair! One darts across my path as I approach the front door, another little brown face peeps out of the guttering.
Once I reach the kitchen, the sparrows have regrouped in the back garden - in the forsythia, the hydrangeas and balancing on the fence - all within easy reach of the bird table. The house has been unoccupied for nearly a year, but the birds soon realised that humans were around again. I provide ‘proper’ bird food, but they prefer investigating what the builders have to offer. A scrap of bacon sandwich, a bit of leftover cake or a crumb of cheese cause a scrum of activity. These fatty treats build insulation, but a bird can only put on so much body weight or flight becomes impossible! When the weather was at its worst, the sparrows huddled together in the hedge, their feathers puffed out to conserve body heat. They can even shiver, contracting different sets of muscles, to stop from freezing to death. Getting enough daily food is vital, and house sparrows’ long association with humans is key to their survival. They are opportunists, with reports of them nesting deep underground in mines, as well as in London’s Underground, and they negotiate automatic doors to access airports and warehouses. But despite this adaptability, this once common bird is in decline, both in cities and in the countryside. Loss of habitat, pollution and predation have all been blamed.Yet in our towns and villages, house sparrows are managing better, drawn to gardens and allotments which offer varied sources of food. It’s a joy to see these endearing little birds, dangling from a washing line or perching on the window sill, and their cheeky antics and noisy chattering certainly get my attention. If the house sparrow is to survive, it needs all the human help it can get.

THERE’S A PLAICE FOR US… A chilly start faced the hardy Lions on Weston Shore in late January, as they laid out their stall for the 44th annual Ford Charity Fishing Festival. Well before the official 7am registration time, over 80 stalwart fishermen had joined the queue to pay their entrance fees and draw their competition stations, spreading from Rolling Mill to Beach Lane, Netley. The Lions have provided support for this fishing festival since the 1990's. The festival is organised by Peter Oates and historically had been part of the calendar of the sea-angling section of the Ford sports and social club. Despite the closure of the Transit van factory, the event continues to attract great support with south-coast fishermen. This year the proceeds of this long-standing fund-raiser will be going to Rose Road Association in Southampton. It’s important to know that if your child’s school is closed, you’re entitled to take time off to make sure they’re looked after. Employees who care for young children have the right to what’s known as Dependant Leave, which covers emergencies such as your child’s school being closed. Dependant Leave gives you a “reasonable amount” of time off work to deal with an emergency relating to your child. Speak to your manager as soon as possible. Although an employer can’t refuse to let you take Dependant Leave, they might be worried about the effect on the business. Make it clear you have no option, that you

WHY MAKE A WILL?
NIGEL CHAMBERLAIN & PARTNERS SERVING THE MEON VALLEY FOR OVER 125 YEARS Nigel Chamberlain & Partners is an independent family funeral service that have been serving the communities of Bishops Waltham, the Meon Valley, Wickham, Botley and the many surrounding Hampshire villages for well over 125 years and can trace their continuous history in the funeral profession back to 1892. Together with our dedicated team of qualified staff Bob & Lucy, we offer a truly personal 24 hour service and firmly believe that every funeral is 'unique' to suit the financial situation and wishes of the family.
If you die without a valid will you will have no say in what happens to your assets and the Intestacy rules will divide your estate in accordance with law. This may not be to the people you wished to benefit, especially in situations where there has been a remarriage. Everyone should have a will but it is even more important if you have children, own a property or own a business. You should also regularly review your will, particularly if you have recently married (as this revokes wills), got divorced, had children or purchased a new expensive asset such as a house.
Unlike many funeral directors we do not request a deposit or part payment prior to the funeral arrangement and will always offer you a wide range of options and an itemised estimate. The Defence Discount Card and Blue Light Card are accepted giving card holders a discount on our professional charges. Through our extensive experience we offer help and guidance on the style and location of the ceremony from a simple unattended committal to a personalised celebration that reflects the individual. Our team are personally available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Tel: 01489 892640 www.chamberlainfunerals.co.uk The Gate House,Victoria Road, Bishop's Waltham, SO32 1DJ
Wills created without legal assistance can unfortunately lead to mistakes or a lack of clarity and, in the worst cases, could result in an invalid will. What should I think about before making a Will? Here are some questions you may need to ask yoursleves. What do you own? Include all property, vehicles, savings, bonds and investments. Are your assets outside England or Wales? Who do you want to benefit in your will? Do you have any funeral wishes, such as a preference to cremation or burial. Do you have any children under 18 and what provisions would you like to make for them. Who will be you Executors. These are people that will carry out your wishes in your will and can be a family memember, friend or solicitors as a professional executor. At Bramsdon and Childs, we have been drafting wills since 1878 and have expertise in the many complications that can arise when you consider your estate. We have new offices in Bishops Waltham in addition to our original office in Southsea. See our website for more information. We will guide you through the process and discuss your options with you as well as alert you to any potential problems with your wishes. If any issues do arise, such as disputes or property related matters, we have the expertise to tackle these problems and help you ensure your affairs are in order. As part of our will writing service, we shall also offer advice on whether inheritance tax is likely to be payable on your estate and the reliefs you may be able to claim. By using Bramsdon and Childs to help you with your will you will be better informed and better prepared to ensure that your last wishes are followed. Libby’s four siblings had been rescued a fortnight earlier when a member of the public contacted volunteers at Cats Protection’s Fareham Branch to say she had spotted some kittens in a lane near Botley Park golf course. Co-ordinator of Cats Protection’s Fareham Branch Lorri Seymour said: “It was after 8pm and in the middle of nowhere, so it was very dark and scary – there’s just fields and a narrow lane so we only just got the car down there.
volunteers named the kittens after bishops and also people named Bishop: Lily (Bishop, American author), (Thomas) Becket, Desmond (Tutu), (Lord) Ramsey and now Libby (Lane). The first four kittens, thought to be about 12 weeks old when they were rescued, have already been adopted and moved to their forever homes and the branch has a list of people waiting to adopt Libby when she’s well enough. “The number of cats being dumped is a major problem for us because it can take weeks and sometimes hundreds of pounds to nurse just one unfortunate cat back to health,” said Lorri. “We seem to be living in a throwaway society where some people think nothing of just dumping cats. I urge owners to get their cats neutered as they are such prolific breeders. Just one unneutered cat can produce up to 18 offspring in a year so neutering will help to prevent more unwanted kittens like these in the future.” More information about the work of the Farnham Branch can be found at: https://fareham.cats.org.uk/fareham
“Members of the public had managed to catch two kittens and we used traps with food inside to catch two others – it took a couple of hours but the kittens were really hungry so they were eventually tempted inside. The lady who called us said she’d seen five kittens, but there was no sign of the fifth. We waited as long as we could, but we needed to get the other kittens checked over – it was an awful dilemma.” By 1am Lorri and fellow Cats Protection volunteer Trudi Farrow had taken the rescued animals to safety, but remained concerned there was another kitten who needed help. There was no sign of her for two weeks, but against all the odds the same member of the public who had originally spotted the animals called again on Sunday 20 January 2019 to say she’d seen a black kitten in the lane. “Trudi, her husband Mark and I headed straight back to the lane and, thankfully, this time we managed to find and catch the remaining kitten,” said Lorri. “It was a miracle Libby was still alive and it was so cold out there I don’t think she would have made it through another night. She must have been terrified.” Lorri has been caring for the first four kittens at home – despite her partner being allergic to cats – and a volunteer fosterer is caring for Libby, feeding her a teaspoon of food every hour since she was rescued. By the time Libby arrived, her siblings – some of whom might actually be similar-aged kittens from another litter – were recovering well, gaining weight and quickly gaining confidence. They were all treated by vets at Heathside Veterinary Surgery, with full health checks, flea and worm treatments, and a blood test and antibiotics for some of the kittens. Because they were found near Bishop’s Waltham,

The North Pond lies immediately to the west of Bishop’s Waltham town centre, and it is the larger surviving part of the Great Pond that was established by the Bishops of Winchester in the 12th century, adjoining the Palace. Over the past four decades the North Pond became overgrown with willows and, through lack of management, it was changing from a pond to a wet woodland. Over the years several initiatives were set up to restore the Pond, but failed. In 2008 the Parish Council’s Market Town Healthcheck survey showed that the local community considered the North Pond to be potentially Bishop’s Waltham main environmental asset but also the local feature most in need of improvement. Consequently the Parish Council set up a working group to produce a restoration plan, which was approved, and the North Pond Conservation Group was formed with the task of fulfilling the plan. In 2018, when the public viewing area by the B2177 was officially opened by the Mayor of Winchester, the final phase of the restoration plan was completed. Alan Inder and Dr Barry Jerome – past and present Chairmen of the Group – have combined to tell the fascinating story of the restoration project in a new book: ‘Restoration of the Bishop’s Waltham North Pond’. The 72-page book is packed with colour illustrations. It is an interesting tale of ups and downs that ultimately succeeded in turning the North Pond into a major environmental asset that is greatly valued by the community, who supported and encouraged the project throughout. ‘Restoration of the Bishop’s Waltham North Pond’ is published by the North Pond Conservation Group at £8.50, and is available from three shops in the town centre: Best Wishes, Studio 4 Gifts, and Julia’s Kitchen. The book can also be ordered directly from the Conservation Group via info@bwnpcg.org.uk

HOME spent with my family on a farm in Devon, where I spent many hours working with the various farm animals and still visit now. When I’m not painting (or working as a vet), I can be found walking my dog Lenny in the local countryside and visiting some of our many local pubs. I also enjoy some of the more adrenaline filled outdoor pursuits, particularly surfing and skiing when I have the time.
COVER IMAGE: CHRIS WILLIAM ART I’m a self-taught, mixed media artist based in Alresford. Although I did study art for GCSE, I first started painting for myself in my spare time whilst at Vet School ten years ago, where I mainly enjoyed painting race horses. Since then, my style has evolved into the colourful and slightly abstract style wildlife which I enjoy painting today.
colours and the paint splatters to achieve this, in my preferred medium of acrylic paint. My favourite animals to paint are ones which are more exotic and unusual, such as the big cats, although I am also inspired by the wildlife we see around Hampshire and those I treat in my work as a local vet. I enjoy spending time visiting galleries and find inspiration from artists such as Hubert de Watrigant, Christian Hook and brothers Chris and Steve Rocks for their unusual use of colour and abstract style.
I love capturing the the movement and emotion of the wildlife which I paint and enjoy experimenting with more unusual
I have always been inspired by wildlife and from a young age wanted to work with animals. This interest was sparked by time
This year, I’m planning on selling my work at various local events such as the Watercress Festival and the Alresford Show. I have also entered a number of national competitions, which is an exciting process and also scary process! As well as selling prints and originals, I also undertake commissions.
