like. Now when you think about it, you’re getting 95% of what you would with a new kitchen, it is exception value, just read our reviews to see what our customers think. Will it look like a new kitchen? Yes, if you give your kitchen a full makeover it will, and the quality is probably a better finish than what you might get from national retailers.

A kitchen makeover can be as much or as little as you want it to be, from just swapping the cupboard doors and hinges, all the way up to changing everything other than the units. Here are some of our most frequently asked questions that should help you understand what can be achieved, why replace it when you can reface it!

Ben Reid - Director

Our doors are not a standard size is this a problem? No problem at all, our doors are all made to order here in the UK, so we can have them made in any size. Will the colour of the units change? Yes, we can reface any units that are on show such as sides of tall units or units either side of the hob. We can even change the colour of the front edge of your units. Will a makeover stop us from changing the layout? No, in fact most makeovers we do involve some form of a change in layout, our most common being installing a tall oven housing for an eye level oven.

Do you use your own fitters? Yes indeed we do, and our Master Craftsmen have a background in the Super Yacht industry, so you are in safe hands.

So give us a call for a free, no obligation quotation today to discover what we can do with your kitchen, and with 3 customer service awards from the world’s largest home improvement App HOUZZ you are in safe hands. *40% off kitchen furniture & Labour only, does not apply to appliances or specialist items. How long does a makeover take? A hard question to answer as this does depend on how much we are doing, but on average a makeover takes 5 days, and if you are just changing your doors 1 day is usually enough.

Witness for the Prosecution is based on the famous short story by Agatha Christie. The courtroom drama and thriller has now been adapted by Emma Bevan, a published author and playwright, for its première performance at Titchfield Festival Theatre this May. The year is 1954.The scene: a courtroom, where a man - Leonard Vole - is accused of murdering a widow in order to inherit her wealth. The court must now decide whether Vole is innocent or guilty – and the audience will be able to judge too, with virtually the entire play taking place in the legal chamber before the judge and jury. Agatha Christie’s writing is celebrated for many reasons – including her legendary ability for adding twists throughout a story, keeping her readers intrigued and guessing right until the very end. Emma has written this special adaptation which remains true to the original; but she has also added her own dialogue and a number of additional twists. The play promises to be a real treat for both Christie fans and for those who enjoy seeing new versions of classic productions. Emma says, “We know that audiences love a good courtroom drama. People enjoy being able to weigh up for themselves whether a person is innocent or guilty – often watching intently as a case is unravelled before them. We decided to keep this adaptation set in the period that Christie wrote it – the 1950s, reflecting the way in which people spoke, the style of clothes people wore – and the type of forensics that were available to investigators at that time. This really is a must-see for our patrons who love a good thriller and who wish to decide for themselves: is the defendant innocent or guilty?” Witness for the Prosecution opens on Wednesday 8th May 2019 until Saturday 18th May at 7.30pm in the Oak Theatre,Titchfield Festival Theatre, St Margarets Lane,Titchfield PO14 4BG. DANEBURY VINEYARDS CELLAR DOOR DAY

JODY SCHECKTER ACCEPTS THE CHALLENGE Former Formula One world champion turned farmer, Jody Scheckter, has confirmed that he will accept the challenge from Italy to settle the debate about who makes the best mozzarella.

An opportunity to visit the long established Hampshire vineyard not normally open to the public. The tour starts at 2pm with a walk and tutored talk in the vineyard, followed by a tasting of two Danebury still white wines in our traditional tasting room, with a visit to our cellar and an opportunity to purchase the wines tasted.

The invitation to a taste-off was made by Pier Maria Saccani, the head of the consortium of buffalo mozzarella producers in Campania, when Jody Scheckter claimed to make buffalo mozzarella that is at least as good as the Italian stuff on his Hampshire farm, as reported in The Daily Telegraph in February.

Note :- Parking in field. Please wear appropriate footwear for walking on grass and gravel. Dress accordingly for weather. Walking distance between outside areas is a few hundred yards. Standing room mainly in tasting room, some chairs. Two flights of 6 steps to cellar. Toilets. Card or cash for purchases.

This fighting talk surfaced in light of discussions about which UK producers stand to benefit from a possible no-deal Brexit. Keen to prove to the world that you can make the best mozzarella here in England, Mr Scheckter is taking the challenge seriously:

This event takes place on Friday 10th may from 2pm - 4pm. At Danebury Vineyards, Nether Wallop, Stockbridge, SO20 6JX

“I stand by my claims that our Hampshire-made mozzarella is at least as good as Italian mozzarella. We get it to the retailers the same day that it is made, whereas it takes up to five days for Italian mozzarella to reach its destination. “Our buffalo spend most of the time in the field whereas in Italy most are kept inside. We have worked hard over the last four years to get our quality consistently good. I am confident in the quality of our product, but it is not going to be easy as they have been making it for hundreds of years in Italy learning from each other, at worst we may learn something.”

£11.25 per ticket, available from www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/ danebury-vineyards-cellar-door-day-vineyard-visit-tasting-tickets57605877731?aff=erellivmlt

Modern British cuisine with Continental influences Forty years ago this year, Jody was celebrating winning on the track when he was crowned Formula One World Champion with Ferrari. He commented on this anniversary: “Forty years ago it was cars and now it is mozzarella. I like to win but hate to lose. Preparation is key and I will be putting as much thought and focus into this cheese prix as I did my racing.” Arrangements are yet to be confirmed for the location and date of the cheese prix but Jody Scheckter hinted at it possibly happening before Brexit. www.hampshirefare.co.uk Image credit: Adrian Dennis

FOOD & DRINK Unless otherwise requested, every tier of my cakes is at least 5 inches in height – this really adds to the visual impact. Every tier is made of 4 layers of sponge and 3 layers of filling. The cakes are covered in a layer of Belgian chocolate ganache and a fine layer of premium-quality Swiss sugar paste. The finished effect is completely smooth, and the edges are sharp.

SUEPHISTICATED CAKES FOR ANY OCCASION! My name’s Sue and I’m the owner of Suephisticated Wedding Cakes, based in Shedfield, Hampshire. I founded my business 7 years ago and have since grown my reputation and expertise as a leading artisan cake designer and sugar florist. MY CAKES I’m an artisan cake designer and sugar florist and I specialise in a truly bespoke service. I use the highest quality ingredients and recipes that deliver on taste and wow factor. Every element of every cake I make is created from scratch. The flavours are created by real, natural ingredients. They’re never out of a bottle. I’m proud of my delicious curds, conserves and Italian meringue buttercream (smooth, not overly sweet or grainy). They create a sensational and unforgettable cake, every time.

WHAT IF YOU HAD A SECOND CHANCE? “The fault, Dear Brutus, is not in our stars but in ourselves….” Titchfield Festival Theatre is delighted to announce the forthcoming production of Dear Brutus by JM Barrie, the author of Peter Pan, The Admirable Chrichton and Quality Street. This is a haunting drama revealing the inner soul and longing of eight widely differing strangers, performed to Barrie’s original script. It is darkly comic, full of elfish wit and human tenderness. If you enjoyed reading Peter Pan and A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream, you will love this beautiful and enchanted play. A magical wood appears on Midsummer Night’s Eve and the eight strangers are invited into it by a mysterious old man. What happens there has the power to change their lives for ever… giving each individual an insight into what life would have been like if they had that second chance which they so longed for. Kevin Fraser, Artistic Director of Titchfield Festival Theatre says, “This play holds very dear memories for me as it was the first play I ever appeared in live on Radio 4 and recorded at the Kings Head Theatre in London. Dan Crawford who cast me and ran the theatre died that same year. He was a real loss to theatre and a huge and eccentric influence on me! Dear Brutus opens on Wednesday 10th April 2019 until Saturday 20th April at 7.30pm in the Oak Theatre, Titchfield Festival Theatre, St Margarets Lane, Titchfield PO14 4BG. For more information, please go to http://titchfieldfestivaltheatre.com/or contact our Box Office on 01329 556156.

My sugar flowers are the ‘icing on the cake’. I craft each flower by hand, and they look like real, delicately blooming, flower heads. Many customers are surprised that they’re made from sugar! My attention to detail means that every cake is perfect. In addition to traditional wedding cakes I also specialise in delicious macarons These gluten free treats are as light as air and sumptuously flavoured. You can choose from a selection of flavours or request your own; for example, zingy lemon, salted caramel, summery strawberry or decadent pistachio. Macarons can be ordered for you guests as favours or assembled on a tower with or without a cake. I also love to make special occasion cakes. I want you to thoroughly enjoy choosing your cake and to be overjoyed when you see and taste the finished design on yourspecial day. My studio, situated in Shedfield, Hampshire, is a welcoming and comfortable space where you can see my designs, and the kitchen where they’re created. I enjoy meeting every bride and groom to be, and hearing about their big day. Finally, please be rest assured that I take limited commissions per week. This maintains my high standards of service and ensures I’m on hand to personally answer any questions you have. I look forward to meeting you soon. www.suephisticatedweddingcakes.co.uk

NEW BOOK FROM LOCAL AUTHOR Gordon Pearson has put pen to paper again and written the biography of the Revd Richard Wake who was born in King’s Somborne in 1831 and became a Methodist reformer and evangelist. From a humble background, he was educated in Stockbridge and Houghton before the family moved to Poole and later to Millbrook where he met Sarah Attwood whom he married. They emigrated to America in 1854 but he returned and toured Hampshire to preach the great opportunities which existed in the new world for hardworking English families. In 1866 he led 115 followers from Liverpool across the Atlantic where he formed a wagon train and headed west across the great plain to the embryo colony of Palmyra in Nebraska. In 1869, he returned and founded the City of Wakefield in Kansas which was named after him. It remains a thriving city today which celebrates its 150th anniversary in August. Gordon has researched Wake’s early life to produce an entertaining biography of this remarkable but little known man of Hampshire. His book is an A4 sized softback containing 64 pages including 27 illustrations (ISBN 978-0-9515110-8-4) and is sold at its cost price of £8.00 plus £2.00 for postage and packing where necessary. As we wave goodbye to the dark evenings and step out of hibernation into Spring - it’s the perfect time to reflect on how we’re feeling. Winter gloom and excess may leave their mark but health improvements can be made by reducing stress through lifestyle changes (and they don’t have to be big changes). SO HOW ARE YOU FEELING? With busy lives and never enough time to eat properly, exercise, sleep or relax, stress is taking its toll on our bodies. It can impact our hormone levels, rendering them out of balance as well as affecting how food is absorbed in the gut. The effect of stress can manifest itself in many ways including anxiety, depression, menstrual changes, lethargy, recurrent infections, skin problems, joint pains, gut symptoms and even increased cancer risk. Lifestyle driven health conditions are on the increase, so why not make the first move towards improving things now? Dr Katherine Hodgkinson is a GP with a passion for empowering people to make positive changes towards taking control of their healthcare and improving their wellbeing. “My particular expertise lies within the field of hormones, and I am a firm advocate of a balance in hormones being essential to health. As such, I’m also the founder of Hampshire Health and Hormones, based at LB Healthcare in Whiteley,” says Dr Hodgkinson. Hampshire Health and Hormones offers focused hormonal consultations and detailed lifestyle consultations. With the use of blood testing to aid the diagnosis of health problems including hormonal imbalances, Dr Hodgkinson will work with you using evidence-based approaches. Body-identical and bio-identical hormones (hormones identical to those produced in the body) can help restore the balance of your hormones, together with tailored advice on lifestyle, diet and supplements, to help improve your health in a way that’s achievable and sustainable. Get back to feeling like you again! Visit www.healthandhormones.co.uk for more details.

DAVINA'S - FANTASTIC DRESSES IN WARSASH Davina’s fantastic dress shop is now located at 7 Warsash Road Warsash SO31 9HW. For those unfamiliar with Warsash it is 2 doors away from Peter Nash Specialist Cars and opposite the Ferryman public house. There is a large unrestricted free car park on the other side of the road.

MAY DAY IN WICKHAM SQUARE Every year on May 1st, Wickham Morris dance in the old medieval square at the centre of Wickham. They have been doing this since they were formed in 1981 and will be back again on Wednesday the first of May this year – at 5.15am. The dawn is perfect (if the weather is good!) and each year we get a few dozen people up to watch. In fact many of the people come again and again each year. We would be delighted if you care to join us. But, then in the evening the Square will be resounding with the music from many groups of Morris dancers. From Alton to the Isle of Wight, Chichester to the New Forest, whatever sides of dancers are available, join together to dance in colourful costumes. The event is free and often the Square is full of folk watching. There is a collection that this year will be heading towards the Winchester Hospice. Since they started counting Wickham Morris have given over £40,000 to various local and national charities.

The shop comprises 3 large airy rooms with 3 changing rooms. The front room has the largest selection of mother of the bride/groom outfits in Hampshire/Dorset, with a choice of Condici, John Charles and Veni Infantino. They combine classic styles in jewel, or pastel colours and a selection of younger ruched outfits. There is also a range of matching hats, hatinators and fascinators, many of which are made exclusively for Davina’s. For those who want a one-stop-shop Davina’s also stock shoes and handbags to complete your outfit. Part of the main room and a second room contain lots of exciting casual trousers, or tops to more structured outfits, ideal for cruising, or visiting Ascot, or a Royal Garden Party. Labels include Frank Lyman, Josef Ribkoff, Habella and Maria Bellantani Italian knitwear. You will be spoiled for choice. The third room contains evening wear, with many sale, or reduced items. Davina's also has an exciting range of the latest prom dresses by Mascara. You are never pressurised to buy and advice is available if requested from Davina, or her knowledgeable staff, but you can just browse if you prefer. Husbands, or partners are warmly welcome to ‘watch the fashion show’, or just sit back in one of the comfortable easy chairs and read the newspaper. Davina has herself lived in Warsash for 45 years and is proud now to have her shop there.

No. 1 in Hampshire and Dorset for Mother of the Bride/Groom & quality label day wear Morris is a very old tradition in England. Note that it is English as opposed to British – it is one of few traditions that can be pinned down as English. References go back to the times of Henry VIII, but usually the references say things like – several Morris dancers were charged with drunken behaviour or disguised as Morris men they went from house to house. In other words they don’t tell us much about the dancing. One nice quote goes back to June 18th 1705. The Blenheim Palace foundation stone was laid and someone called William Upcott described the scene saying "There were several sorts of musick, three morris dances; one of young fellows, one of maidens, and one of old beldames." We think a beldame might have been a man dressed as a woman, but it is interesting that maidens, ie young girls or women, were dancing 300 years ago.

Davina’s has the largest up-to-date selection of high quality designer wear and ladies’ fashion clothing. If you are looking for a Mother of the Bride/Groom outfit, special occasion wear, cruise wear, or simply an addition to your seasonal wardrobe, then Davina’s is for you.

Starting at 6.30pm when any children’s groups from local schools kick the evening off, the dancing continues until it gets dark. A number of parking places in the Square will be blocked off, with the permission of the district council, so the area has enough room for dancing and watching. There is additional parking available at the community centre or station.

Tel: 01489 880900 or shop online at: www.davinasladiesfashion.co.uk

GARDEN There were tips on the types of jars to use when making preserves, always use scrupulously clean jam jars, and you must buy new, screw top lids and make sure the labels are the appropriate size and put on straight! Methylated Spirit is excellent for removing any marks from the glass jars! Ensure that you put the full date of when the jam/preserve/chutney was made. It is also essential that chutneys are kept for a minimum of 3 months in which to mature.

EAST MEON GARDEN CLUB – 4TH MARCH MEETING: A TALK ON HINTS AND TIPS FOR SUCCESS ON THE SHOWBENCH BY MARGARET WILLIAMS We were delighted to welcome Margaret Williams to the Garden Club, although she is no stranger to us as she regularly comes to our Annual Show to judge the culinary produce. There were tips for the Committee on how to write schedules, how to make them interesting, suggesting they could have a theme and try not to have too many rules! Margaret passed around a copy of a schedule her Mother had produced for a ‘Co-operative Tea’ in 1965 and the classes made very interesting reading from cooking Quaker Oats Biscuits,Yorkshire Teacakes, Fruit flan with biscuit pastry, bottle of salad cream to a jar of bottled stone fruit. Margaret made a point of not being too specific, for example, a Victoria Sponge is better than asking for a 7”Victoria Sandwich, much better for people to provide the cake than not, should they not have the ‘specified’ size tin. Will encourage more people to enter the classes. Incidentally, the perfect Victoria Sponge is filled with a good quality raspberry jam and topped with a light sprinkling of caster sugar!

How to test chutney to see if it is ready? Run a spoon across the mixture and if the vinegar runs back into the groove, the chutney needs a further 10 minutes or so to cook. Keep chutneys for a maximum of 2 years as they will start to discolour thereafter. Always fill the jam jars to the top for when the jam cools, it settles and in so doing forms a good seal. When making curds, remember they have a shelf life of 3 weeks and must always be kept in the ‘fridge. Fruit jellies are best put in smaller, straight sided jars with no ‘ridged’ sides as these can create air bubbles. These however, can be eliminated by sharply banging the filled jar onto a flat surface! When making a quiche, never, ever use a ceramic dish, always metal on a heated baking sheet and egg wash the base of your pastry before putting in the filling. Make sure you use plain cutters, flan tins/ rings for savoury items and fluted for sweet. Using silicone mats are brilliant for scones and biscuits. Always present bread on a board, use plain plates for presenting food and make sure the items have a covering. If you want to know exactly the A – Z for success on the Showbench, obtain a copy of ‘On with the Show’ which is produced by The Women’s Institute and can be obtained online from The Women’s Institute. Now we all know what to do, we look forward to many more of you entering the classes at our Annual Show which is on the 4th August in East Meon Village Hall. Put the date in your diary now! Our next meeting is on Monday 1st April in East Meon Village Hall. Doors Open at 7.15. Visitors welcome £2.00 admittance. Subject this month is 'Vegetables and Herbs'. A talk by Ray Broughton who is currently Senior Lecturer at Sparsholt College. Photograph shows photograph showing Margaret Williams with David Lewin, the Garden Club Chairman. BISHOP'S WALTHAM GARDENING CLUB

Writing this in February, it doesn’t seem possible that we will ever get to Spring, but the signs are there. Snowdrops are magnificent, Crocus and Iris are blooming, though both suffer in heavy rain- of which there seems much less so far this Winter. Some daffodils are just coming into bloom and my pond is full of frogspawn. So, perhaps Spring really IS around the corner. But beware, as the ground -even in Aprilcan still be quite cool, maybe too cool for most seeds. Whilst parsnips and leeks get sweeter in the frost, their seeds won’t grow in the cold soil. If we have seven days above 45f or 7c then have a go. If just one days falls below, then start counting again. Even better, wait awhile until the soil really FEELS warm. If plants get cold, they tend to slow down the growth, never to recover. Put them in later and they will catch up and then overtake the earlier ones and look better for it, too. Patience may be a virtue, but it’s not one that suits gardeners, especially those with allotments as they just can’t wait to get going. The sensible ones weed and dig the plots, lay down well-rotted manure and get the soil ready. Others wade in and plant! If we have a mild Spring, they will probably get away with it but, if not, it could be costly and, of course, the blame lies with the seed supplier!!! Looking further ahead, so many of us visit gardens and our April speaker is Mark Porter on the subject of “The History of the National garden Scheme”. How did this scheme grow to such proportions? LAWNS ARE HUNGRY FEEDERS; LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT WHAT THEY NEED TO REMAIN HEALTHY THROUGHOUT THE YEAR

F

ar too few gardeners understand what goes into the perfect lawn. Most think it is okay to pick up a bag of weed & feed, sprinkle it liberally on the lawn and all will be okay.Your lawn has a complex relationship with nutrition, which changes throughout the growing season and these things need to be taken into consideration if you want a healthy, attractive, disease free lawn.

You may be thinking that surely it can’t be that complicated. Let’s try to explain the basics. When it comes to lawn nutrition there are really three main things to think about; fertiliser composition, timing and application methods.

that as the days warm and the plant needs more nutrition it is gradually made available. It tends to be more expensive but it certainly is effective, provides professional results and gradual grass growth, rather than a sudden burst of growth resulting in excess mowing requirements. SO WE HAVE COVERED COMPOSITION AND ALSO TIMING OF APPLICATION. LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT APPLICATION METHODS Most home owners who buy their lawn feed from the garden centre will have a choice between granular or liquid feeds. As we mentioned earlier, ideally you want a product that releases its nutrients into your lawn slowly, as required, over time. There are two downsides to cheaper liquid feeding. The first is that it tends to be immediate.Your lawn gets an instant food hit then nothing. The other issue is that liquid feeding can be very time consuming and it’s difficult to get the application rates right. We do use liquid, foliar feeds later in the season when we can mix a complex combination of micro-nutrients, amino acids and soil conditioners in a flow release formula that more appropriate for professional use.

Fertilisation is important as it influences the colour of your lawn, its ability to cope with the stresses of drought, mowing and extremes of temperature and to fight against disease and weed infiltration. Choosing the right fertiliser and applying it correctly really is the key to success. Chemical and organic fertilisers display the nutrient content by way of three different numbers. These three numbers represent the compounds Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium (or Potash). Often displayed as N-P-K. The numbers correspond to the percentage of each of these compounds in the fertiliser inside the pack. That’s the easy bit! What each of these compounds does for the plant is probably the most important part. Nitrogen helps leaf growth. Phosphorus helps the growth of roots and flowers, and Potassium is important for the overall health of the plant. When to promote leaf or root growth is really the key to successful lawn nutrition. You want healthy leaf growth in the growing season to encourage a stronger grass plant, but you don’t want to go into winter with too much leaf that can be damaged by the bad weather. High nitrogen fertilisers encourage quick leaf growth but potentially make the plant more susceptible to the attacks of pests and diseases. Phosphorus is important going into winter to encourage healthy and robust roots to support your lawn throughout the challenging months ahead. Another important factor in selecting the right lawn fertiliser is the type of nitrogen actually in the product. Nitrogen fertiliser may consist of fastrelease or controlled-release nitrogen. For lawns, fertilisers containing controlled-release nitrogen sources are best. Lawn care professionals tend to use coated granular product. The coating is formulated to break down gradually over time, therefore providing a slow release of fertiliser as the plants require it. Cheaper fertilisers break down with moisture. We use a technical fertiliser which activates as the temperature increases, ensuring

Controlled-release granular feed is by far the best choice for amateur use. Most gardeners will attempt to apply this themselves and this can create issues. Application by hand is almost impossible to get right. The granules slip through your fingers easily and distribution is uneven. Apply too much to one area and you scorch the grass, often blackening or killing it in patches. Uneven application results in uneven grass growth. Ideally use is a broadcast spreader consisting of a hopper holding the fertiliser and releasing a controlled amount onto a rotating disk, powered by the forward movement of the wheels, distributing the granules in a controlled and even manner. The amount of fertiliser released is controlled by adjusting holes in the base. Getting the quantities right is important and you must calibrate the spreader before you use it, based on the flow rate of the fertiliser, the granule size, the application rate required and the size of the hopper holes. It’s important not to miss any of the lawn or to overlap as you make each pass with the spreader to avoid stripes. I’ve tried to make things as simple as possible but lawn nutrition, product selection and application rates can be relatively complicated. By the time you have bought the product, the right applicator and factored in the time it takes to carry out the work, you can usually save money by asking a lawn care professional to help look after this part of your garden for you. After all, if you want professional results then a professional is usually the person to ask. Ian Kenyon runs Shrekfeet Lawn and Garden Services. COMMUNITY Prior to this Gillian worked for the charity PDSA. There she provided healthcare for pets belonging to owners on benefits, for eighteen years, in their Portsmouth clinics. As part of her role within PDSA she developed fund raising skills which were put to good use later, when she became a Veterinary Trustee of the assistance dog charity Canine Partners. As a keen gardener and plantswoman she has also raised funds for local charities through plant sales. THERE HAVE BEEN MANY CHANGES IN THE VETERINARY WORLD DURING THIS TIME • Increased specialisation and the availability of referral centres of excellence • Out of Hours cover being provided by practices other than the usual daytime clinic The acquisition of many small practices by large corporate groups Gillian would like to say a huge thank you to all her clients for their loyalty and friendship. She wishes them all the best for the future and many happy years of pet ownership.

IT SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED TO A VET! Veterinary Surgeon Gillian Taylor has announced that she will be retiring from general practice in June this year. A familiar face to many in the local community, Gillian qualified from Liverpool University in the mid-eighties. The real ‘James Herriot’ was also there that day, ironically, as reading his books was one of the influences on her career choice. Passionate about her profession she has worked exclusively in small animal practice, the last thirteen years of which have been at Shield Vets in Bishops Waltham.

There is a strong possibility that some of you will see her in a new guise – that of a public speaker at garden clubs and other societies. Two recent well attended evenings at local horticultural groups have encouraged her in this new venture. www.pdsa.org.uk www.caninepartners.org.uk

WEST MEON PARISH COUNCIL: FIRST WORLD WAR TALK Following on from Fraser Skirrow’s well received 'Centenary of the Armistice' presentation in November, West Meon Sports Club will be hosting his follow-up presentation on Wednesday, 3rd April. FIGHTING SPIRIT – PATROLLING & RAIDING WITH THE WEST YORKS 1917-18 This talk looks at the development of patrolling and raiding in a West Yorks battalion. It examines who was involved, how the patrol and raiding war actually worked, what was achieved and discusses whether the emphasis on patrolling had any effect on fighting abilities. With modern and contemporary photos, maps and RFC recce photos the talk takes the audience along the paths of a series of patrols to see what actually happened in No Man’s Land at night.

WINCHESTER CITY COUNCIL BACKS DISTRICT LITTER HEROES IN GREAT BRITISH SPRING CLEAN Residents are being urged to get and help clean up the streets, parks and green spaces of the district for this year’s Great British Spring Clean. The city council has pledged its support for the annual event, run by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy. It will run from March 22 to April 23, with more than half a million people across the country pledging to get picking to make Britain cleaner. Winchester City Council Portfolio Holder for Environment, Cllr Jan Warwick said: “We are so fortunate to have a beautiful and green district, but it is vital it is kept looking at its best and the problem of litter is one that requires us all to play our part.”

Tickets are free and include a chilli potato supper in the interval. There will be a cash bar with voluntary contributions to the Sports Club's nominated charity. Tickets are available from the Village Shop.

The council will be assisting local parishes and litter picking groups in the district by providing free high-visibility jackets, litter pickers and black bags, which they will collect after the event. The Great British Spring Clean brings together individuals, community organisations, businesses and councils to make a difference to the environment on our doorstep. Last year more than 630,000 bags of rubbish were collected.

Held at the Sports Pavilion, Headon View, West Meon, Petersfield, Hampshire, GU32 1LH from 7:30pm – 10:00pm

More than 70 new council homes will be built in Winchester after the full business case for The Valley housing scheme was approved by councillors. The development in Stanmore will include a mix of one, two and three-bedroom flats, two and three-bedroom houses and a three-bedroom bungalow. A planning application for the 77 new homes was approved in the summer. Winchester City Council Leader and Portfolio Holder for Housing, Cllr Caroline Horrill said: “This is fantastic news and it means that we can make real inroads in reducing the council waiting list and ensuring that our residents can live in the district. This scheme is also a key part of our strategy to build 1,000 homes over the next 10 years and also continue to provide a range of housing options for residents.” The development will offer a mix of affordable rented and shared ownership opportunities for the district’s residents. The scheme, which is expected to start in April, will also benefit from a minimum £3.2m cash injection from Homes England, with potential for further funds to be secured. www.winchester.gov.uk

If you cannot agree arrangements for contact with the parents directly or after trying Mediation, you may have to consider Court proceedings. As a grandparent, you would first need to apply to the Court for permission to apply for contact and if that is granted, you proceed with the application. Courts are mindful of the important role that grandparents can play and will generally only refuse contact if that will adversely impact on the child’s welfare.

If you cannot agree arrangements directly with your ex-partner, you should first consider Mediation where you can sit with your expartner and an impartial third party to try and talk about the issue and reach agreement. TRETHOWANS FAMILY TEAM COMMITTED MEMBERS OF RESOLUTION

SUPPORTING CHILDREN THROUGH SEPARATION If you have decided with certainty that you are going to separate you need to plan how to tell the children and support them generally. We detail below a few things to consider and recommend you consult the Resolution website, which has various documents containing guidance and advice and more particularly the leaflet ‘helping parents to help children’ available online on the Resolution website. 1. Telling the children – ideally, both parents should be present when having the initial conversation telling the children about separation but if this would create more tension separate discussions can take place. If you are having separate discussions, avoid placing blame and agree what you are going to say beforehand as children benefit from hearing similar messages from both parents. 2. Address their concerns – reassure children as to when and how they will see both parents and where they will live and attend school. Allow children to ask questions about any concerns they have and if you do not have the answers, indicate you are working out the details and that they will be the first to know.

At Trethowans our family team are all committed members of Resolution. We help our clients to focus on looking at creative, constructive solutions and on how they can put their children’s interests first to minimise the impact of conflict. As a guide we have set out some pointers to assist those contemplating or going through the early stages of separation. IDENTIFY YOUR AIMS AND GOALS IN THE SHORT TERM 1. Do you want to work on your relationship and consider reconciliation? You may like to approach a relationship counsellor or therapist to help you and your partner re-establish communication and identify the difficulties you are facing within your relationship so that you can work on resolving any issues. 2. If you are confident that the relationship has ended, do you need to establish some additional support for yourself to deal with the emotional impact of separation? Do you think the children may need some emotional support from external providers such as through their school, a therapist or a counsellor? 3. Consult a family law specialist to consider the various options open to you to try and resolve any areas of dispute, such as mediation, collaborative law, and solicitor led negotiations or arbitration? 4. Discuss between you how you are going to tell the children and what you will tell them if you wish to trial a temporary separation or a permanent separation. Establish a form of communication for discussing the children. 5. Is it important for you to keep the children in their existing home? Which parent might leave the home, temporarily or long term in these circumstances and how will the children continue to spend time with that parent? 6. Is it important for you to keep the children in their existing school/ nursery? 7. Consider your financial situation and your objectives for the financial division of assets/liabilities, most particularly in the short term, so that you can agree how the rent/mortgage and household bills and expenses will be paid on an immediate basis.

3. Understand how they might be feeling – Your children’s feelings about the separation may be different to yours. They may experience a range of emotions and they need to be supported in expressing feelings of anger or upset. Identify behaviours that are acceptable and behaviours that are not, with clear consequences for behaviours that are not. Identify healthy and appropriate ways to express anger or upset. 4. Things they need to hear – children should understand that they are not to blame for the separation and that there is nothing they can do to change what is happening within the family. They should know that they can talk to either of you about any concerns or questions they might have. Reassure your children that they are loved by both of you, they can always love both parents and that they will always have a family. 5. Managing your relationship as separated parents – Try to address the other person in a respectful manner and be polite when discussing arrangements rather than criticising or assigning blame. Avoid using handovers as a time to discuss issues and instead communicate separately via email, text or arrange a separate meeting in person to address outstanding issues. Do not have heated discussions or arguments in the presence of the children. If you are able to reach an agreement concerning the arrangements for the children, you may like to draw up a parenting plan so that you both know the parameters of the agreement. You can download a basic parenting plan from the CAFCASS website (www.cafcass.gov. uk), alternatively, we can assist in drafting a document setting out the agreed arrangements. You may also like to agree methods of communication moving forwards and perhaps benefit from the use of a handover book. It is undoubtedly going to be challenging at times to resolve some of the above points, particularly arrangements for the children and financial support for the family. We would recommend getting some legal advice sooner rather than later so that you can manage expectations and understand how you might go about resolving some of the tricky points in dispute. We offer an initial free 30 minute consultation to discuss the issues important to you and give you some early guidance. BBC RADIO 4 GARDENERS' QUESTION MEETS EAST MEON GARDEN CLUB

The Team from BBC Radio 4 Gardeners’ Question Time was welcomed to East Meon Garden Club on Tuesday 19th March. We were so lucky to have such fabulous panellists, Chris Beardshaw, Bob Flowerdew and Pippa Greenwood. Chris has won 35 prestigious design awards including 12 RHS Gold Medals, the latest was for the NSPCC Garden at RHS Chelsea in 2018. Bob Flowerdew is known as one of Britain’s leading organic Gardeners. Interestingly, his family have been farming the land in East Anglia since before the time of the Tudors. Pippa Greenwood is our local lady and has been a regular panellist on Gardeners’ Question Timer since 1994. She is a trained Botanist and was the gardening consultant for the ITV series ‘Rosemary and Thyme’. A LITTLE BACKGROUND TO THE EVENT From the time we were informed the Team would like to come to the village and the time of the event itself was barely six weeks, so it was a ‘all hands on deck’ situation! The application itself was some 10 pages long and when it came to the question, ‘why should the team come to your venue’ who else was there to answer that, but our wonderful historian, Michael Blakstad! Needless to say, he wrote a remarkable piece on the history of East Meon, resulting in a meeting with Dan Cocker (GQT Producer) at Leydene House on the afternoon of the event itself, so that the outline of the original and famous Rose Garden could be seen.

ST PETERS CHURCH, CURDRIDGE

This rural church has a heart to bless the community and plays an active part in village life, with various outreach events throughout the year. The friendly congregation welcomes people of all ages. The church is open during the day for private prayer and visitors. You can light a votive candle or leave a prayer request on the prayer board. Little Rocks runs children activities on Sundays when there is communion service. The church is very family friendly. There is a car park in Church Lane opposite to tower entrance. SO32 2DR. The Church is served by All Saints Botley Office. Contact 01489 782445

Tickets for the event sold out within 10 days and we were delighted at the help we received from the East and West Meon Shops and ‘One Tree Books’ with selling tickets. It was lovely also to welcome Jennie and Rob Ham to the event in their roles as St John Ambulance support. A lot of extremely hard work by the Garden Club Committee resulted in the transformation of the Village Hall, the stage looked particularly beautiful. Spring had truly sprung with gorgeous flowers donated by ‘West End Flower Farm’ in Froyle and brilliantly arranged by Amanda Wyatt, who, as you know, is the Garden Club’s regular contributor. Amanda is also known for her culinary expertise as… ‘Sage & Season’. Contact Amanda…amanda@sageandseason.co.uk

The Committee would like to thank The Village Hall Committee for accommodating us so well and lastly, but by no means least, a huge ‘thank you’ to the husbands, wives and partners who rolled up their sleeves, put out chairs, traffic cones, parking signs, poured out the wine and prepared and served the most delicious food imaginable to the Production Team and Committee throughout the afternoon. What a Team!

RENEWED CALLS FOR ASSAULTS ON OFFICERS TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY

A thug who walked free from court after repeatedly kicking and punching an officer on the floor before assaulting his colleague has sparked calls for the criminal justice system to end lenient punishments. Last year, PC Paul Headen and PC Oliver Green were called to an address after Mark Watson attacked his mother. The pair made attempts to detain Watson but he resisted, hitting PC Green multiple times before pinning him to the floor, kicking him in the groin and then punching him in the face. He was left with a black eye. PC Headen was also assaulted, but by drawing his Taser he managed to create space between them before making an arrest - but Watson ran away with his handcuffs still attached and was not located for almost a month. PC Headen walked away with minor bruising. Watson of Sarum Hill, Kings Furlong, was charged with two counts of assault by beating, one count of actually bodily harm and escaping lawful custody. On 31 January this year he was sentenced to just six months in prison suspended for 18 months at Winchester Crown Court despite The Assaults on Emergency Workers

Dennis and Simon Murrell are brothers with the knowledge and ability to create the results you require from any plastering project, from refurbishment to new builds. They have enhanced these skills and the skills of their reliable and committed

(Offences) Act being enshrined in law in November and doubling the maximum sentence for these cowardly and despicable acts from six to 12 months. The officers have received no compensation and are said to feel incredibly let down by the system, whilst the Hampshire Police Federation has considered an appeal, but it appears the threshold will be too high. Hampshire Police Federation Chairman Alex Charge, said: “Police officers in Hampshire want to see justice and it is clear that these assaults are not being treated with the seriousness they should be. Offenders will still face no deterrent unless magistrates and the criminal justice system take the issue of assaults seriously. The recent success in introducing the Assaults on Emergency Workers (Offences) Bill gave us hope that the judicial system would start to take violence against emergency workers more sternly. “Whilst we didn’t get everything that we wanted in this bill, it is a start and a significant improvement on what we had. Sadly the message doesn’t seem to have got through and we continue to see perverse, weak and unacceptable sentences for those who assault officers across our county. We need to end the practice of offenders being under-charged and given no more than a slap on the wrist. Until then, officers will continue to feel undervalued with criminals laughing in the face of justice.” Our latest welfare survey revealed 20% of Hampshire Constabulary officers who participated in the research suffered one or more injuries that required medical attention as a result of work-related violence in the last year – losing more than 484 days in sickness absence. team by keeping up with current building techniques. With this they create bespoke solutions to meet any ideas you wish to achieve, and are always excited by new projects and providing high quality standards and solutions.
