Make your OLD kitchen a NEW kitchen for a fraction of the cost of buying a new kitchen Our kitchen and utility room have been transformed and we are totally happy! Having spent far too long deliberating over a new kitchen it was a relief when Ben visited us at home. He understood immediately what we were trying to achieve and gave us excellent practical advice and good ideas to refine and improve our plans. His 'can do', energetic and professional approach is brilliant and he made the whole process easy and straightforward. His team of craftsmen, in particular Dan, are wonderful. Courteous, friendly and professional, their workmanship, knowledge and attention to detail is amazing. Everything (and more!) was done within the time frames given. I just wish we'd given Ben the job years ago! Sue & Rob Harris Happy Kitchens are quite unique as we are able to offer top quality products, available in any size, fitted by the best professionals in the business. CULTURE quickly giving way to open fields and broad skies.
COVER IMAGE BY JERRY SMITH - LANDSCAPE PAINTER For this month's front cover, we're delighted to feature another painting by local artist Jerry Smith.
Heading down to Droxford from Mayhill Lane, the Meon River and the old Meon Valley Railway line are easily accessible, opening up more places to explore including the St.Clair’s Meadow Nature Reserve.
'Mayhill Lane in Spring' (shown above) depicts a quiet route frequented by walkers, cyclists and horse riders, connecting the villages of Swanmore and Droxford. The lane meanders through a varied rural landscape and from the highest point (it is quite steep in places!) there are fine views northwards to Beacon Hill and the South Downs Way. With spring now well and truly underway, it’s definitely a good time to be out exploring this charming area of Hampshire.

Over time you can get to know these places well, but the changing seasons will inevitably throw new light on a familiar scene. Silhouettes of bare winter trees and long shadows from a low, winter sun can be dramatic at one end of the year, while the soft glow of a summer evening can have a different feel altogether. It’s this constantly changing light which provides the artistic inspiration for Jerry’s work, whether it be in the form of charcoal and pastel sketches or larger paintings in oil or acrylic. This month Jerry will be having his third solo exhibition, with a range of new landscape paintings and drawings on show, plus prints and greeting cards for sale. The exhibition will take place at the Paterson Centre in Swanmore on Saturday 18th May from 10am until 4pm. Jerry runs his own oil painting art classes and gives private tuition, as well as painting demonstrations and workshops for local art groups. He’ll also be taking part in the annual Hampshire Open Studios event in the last week of August. For more information go to www.jerrysmithartist.co.uk

VERDI REQUIEM AT WINCHESTER CATHEDRAL Southampton Philharmonic Choir returns to the magnificent setting of Winchester Cathedral on Saturday 22 June 2019 for a performance of Verdi’s Requiem. Few choral works have captured the public imagination in the same way that this piece has. Unashamedly theatrical in style, the work has moments of great tenderness and simplicity juxtaposed with passages of the most powerful and thrilling intensity. The soaring lyrical melodies, which lie perfectly for the human voice; the scintillating orchestration and its extraordinary dramatic and emotional depth all contribute to the Requiem’s status as one of the icons of Western choral music.
Banks Bar Bistro
Verdi wrote his Requiem in 1873 and conducted the first performance on 22 May 1874 in the church of San Marco in Milan. The second performance, three days later, at La Scala Opera House seemed a more suitable setting for this operatic masterpiece. As in previous performances, the Southampton Philharmonic Choir and Southampton University Philharmonic Choir will be performing without scores, no mean feat, but one that allows the singers to communicate the dramatic extremes of the piece to full effect. Performing with the choirs will be partner orchestra the New London Sinfonia, and four professional soloists under the baton of the Phil’s professional conductor, David Gibson. It’s an experience not to be missed. Tickets £13-35 (with concessions) are available online or from the Cathedral box office. For more details please visit www.southamptonphil.org

HAMPSHIRE MOZZARELLA LEGEND REVS UP TO TAKE THE ITALIANS HEAD ON The date has been set for the Hampshire Vs Campania Grand Prix of Cheeses. Jody Scheckter, from Laverstoke Park Farm, was challenged to the contest by the consortium of Buffalo Mozzarella producers in Campania, Italy, after he claimed to make mozzarella as good as the Italians. Scheckter will travel with this own Hampshire Buffalo Mozzarella to Campania, the home of Italian Buffalo Mozzarella on Tuesday 26 March for the ultimate judging – a blind taste test at the hands of a collection of Italian chefs and experts. This Grand Prix of Cheese takes place within the anniversary year of Jody Scheckter’s F1 World Champion win for Ferrari; but this time he isn’t on the side of the Italians, instead he is proudly racing for Team Hampshire.

Jody is determined to come away from Italy triumphant: “When the mozzarella makers in Campania challenged us to see who really makes the best cheese, I couldn’t resist showing them just how good our Hampshire mozzarella really is. We have great pride in our product and for good reason.” Preparations and training are in full swing at Laverstoke, keen to get a feel for the reception, the farm hosted a selection of chefs, experts and media last Thursday for a blind tasting of mozzarella. Guests tasted five different cheeses, four from Italy and one from Laverstoke Park. After a tense wait Jody announced that they had drawn in first place with a cheese made in the Campania region of Italy. “I am satisfied with today’s result. We have come out on top over three varieties of Italian mozzarella and come level with one” commented Jody Scheckter. “Over the next week or so we are going to focus on the best way to transport our mozzarella so that it arrives with us in Italy in the best condition. Today has reinforced my belief that our mozzarella really is outstanding.” Images courtesy of Electric Eye Photography www.hampshirefare.co.uk

SHAKESPEARE’S MOST POPULAR PLAYS SET TO FEATURE IN TITCHFIELD FESTIVAL THEATRE’S SUMMER SEASON Titchfield’s successful and highly popular Bard at the Barn is back again this summer, featuring a number of Shakespeare’s best loved plays. There will be no fewer than six productions this year, including Shakespeare’s ‘forgotten’ rock & roll masterpiece – Return to the Forbidden Planet, based on the playwright’s celebrated The Tempest as well as the iconic B-movie The Forbidden Planet and Lost in Space. This promises to be a joyous romp through jukebox songs, rock and roll music with fun for all the family. It will be performed at the Oak Theatre, St Margarets Lane. The historic Great Barn – located only yards away from where England’s most celebrated writer lived and worked for a time – will of course be at the heart of our 2019 summer season. This year, the theatre has chosen William Shakespeare’s most popular plays to give the season a lighter touch including several comedy masterpieces. All of the plays start with the letter “T”, including a performance by the Titchfield Festival Youth Theatre – Time Please, Mr Shakespeare, directed by Johnny O’Hanlon. The plays are: Two Gentlemen of Verona, The Taming of the Shrew, Twelfth Night and The Tempest. Kevin Fraser, Artistic Director of Titchfield Festival Theatre explains, “This year’s Bard at the Barn season will be a real treat for those who love Shakespeare. With a focus on comedy, it will also be an excellent way for people who may be less familiar with his writing to come along and enjoy some of his most famous work. The Great Barn is the perfect place to see arguably one of the Bard’s first ever plays – Two Gentlemen of Verona. And for those of you who enjoy a contemporary twist, we have given The Tempest a unique setting: a motorway service station. The Barn is looking stunning this year with over £100,000 having been spent on the grounds and a new stage and oak hayloft. On a balmy summer night it’s the ideal spot
to enjoy an early picnic tea and a Shakespeare T to round it off! “I am delighted that we have so many young, dynamic and talented directors and actors working with us this year. They include Dan Fox, Abi Linnartz, Emma Bevan, Francesca Nicholson and Lauren Monckton. They bring a fresh, exciting and sometimes radically new look to some of the best loved stories in the English language- Shakespeare I am sure would have been delighted. The 2019 Shakespeare in the Great Barn season will open on Tuesday 28th May 2019, continuing throughout the summer until Thursday 5th September. All evening performances commence at 7.30pm in the Great Barn, Mill Lane, Titchfield PO15 5RB (with the exception of Return to the Forbidden Planet, which will be performed at the Oak Theatre, St Margarets Lane.) Sunday matinee performances start at 2.30pm. For more information, please go to http:// titchfieldfestivaltheatre.com/or contact our Box Office on 01329 556156.

As we wave goodbye to the dark evenings and step out of hibernation into Spring - it’s the perfect time to reflect on how we’re feeling. Winter gloom and excess may leave their mark but health improvements can be made by reducing stress through lifestyle changes (and they don’t have to be big changes). SO HOW ARE YOU FEELING? With busy lives and never enough time to eat properly, exercise, sleep or relax, stress is taking its toll on our bodies. It can impact our hormone levels, rendering them out of balance as well as affecting how food is absorbed in the gut. The effect of stress can manifest itself in many ways including anxiety, depression, menstrual changes, lethargy, recurrent infections, skin problems, joint pains, gut symptoms and even increased cancer risk. Lifestyle driven health conditions are on the increase, so why not make the first move towards improving things now? Dr Katherine Hodgkinson is a GP with a passion for empowering people to make positive changes towards taking control of their healthcare and improving their wellbeing. “My particular expertise lies within the field of hormones, and I am a firm advocate of a balance in hormones being essential to health. As such, I’m also the founder of Hampshire Health and Hormones, based at LB Healthcare in Whiteley,” says Dr Hodgkinson. Hampshire Health and Hormones offers focused hormonal consultations and detailed lifestyle consultations. With the use of blood testing to aid the diagnosis of health problems including hormonal imbalances, Dr Hodgkinson will work with you using evidence-based approaches. Body-identical and bio-identical hormones (hormones identical to those produced in the body) can help restore the balance of your hormones, together with tailored advice on lifestyle, diet and supplements, to help improve your health in a way that’s achievable and sustainable. Get back to feeling like you again! Visit www.healthandhormones.co.uk for more details.

If you can drag yourself away, turn left outside the front door and walk to the top of Shoe Lane. You come to a triangle in the road. Turn right onto the footpath that takes you along the left hand side of Upham Recreation Ground.
BEAUTIFUL WALKING IN THE MEON VALLEY
and stiles taking you into Ashton Lane (there may be horses in the field.) The next stile is opposite.
We are blessed with beautiful countryside here in the Meon Valley and there is no better way to enjoy the stunning scenery than donning your walking boots and roaming the undulating footpaths that link the neighbouring villages. I have been walking the Meon Valley for decades and never tire of this little piece of heaven on earth, whatever the season. We are spoilt for pubs that sell great food and most importantly, welcome our four legged walking companions.
Cross Ashton Lane, over the stile and follow the footpath along and down the field (there may be cattle in the field.) Go through the open gate and continue straight along the footpath to the top of the next field. Cross the stile on the right in the corner of the field and keep to the left of the hedge. The next stile takes you into a copse, an ancient woodland carpeted with bluebells during April (everyone should walk through a bluebell wood once in their lifetime to breath in the heady perfume of these beautiful native flowers.) Follow the footpath along the left of the copse to the next stile.
BISHOPS WALTHAM TO UPHAM CIRCULAR WALK VIA STEPHEN’S CASTLE DOWN ON THE RETURN ROUTE Distance: 7 miles. Time will depend on how fast you walk and how long you stay at the pub. I have taken up to 5 hours as I like to stop to appreciate the views and enjoy a leisurely lunch. Terrain: Footpath, bridleway, road with stiles and steep hills. Parking: Lower Lane car park Bishops Waltham. Up to 4 hours £1.20 – over 4 hours £1.50. Sunday and Bank Holidays free. Map: OS Explorer OL3 (this replaced the Explorer 119 map) Lunch: The Brushmakers Arms, Shoe Lane, Upham (tel: 01489 860231) The start of the walk is by the Lower Lane car park in Bishops Waltham. Follow the footpath on the right side of the car park taking you into St Bonnet Drive. Cross North Pond via the footbridge. Cross the B3035 into Langton Road. Walk up Langton Road, passing Beaufort Drive until you reach Pondside Lane on the right. Keep to the right of the track and walk up the hill with the vineyard on your right. Continue to the top of the track until you meet Vernon Hill. Turn left onto Vernon Hill and walk along the lane until it bends left. There is a footpath on the right. Climb over the stile and keep to the left following the hedge across the fields
Cross the stile and follow the footpath down the field to Stakes Lane. Turn right onto Stakes Lane and follow the road as it climbs to the top of Upham (0.66 miles.) The duck pond is on your left and on your right is Shoe Lane. Walk up Shoe Lane and The Brushmakers is on your left.
You will be warmly welcomed by Nicky and Reece who offer a seasonal menu, great Sunday roasts and real ales (Basil is in charge of the canine welcoming committee.) It is strongly advised to book in advance and ensure you arrive before last food orders at
The footpath continues along a track for 0.66 miles with glorious views up to Cheesefoot Head. If you wanted to take a short detour, there is a footpath 150 yards to your right after the recreation ground passing a clump of trees. This was used as an observation post during World War II by the Royal Observer Corps manned night and day to report sightings of enemy aircraft. Turn around and re-join the track and remain on it until you come to the T-junction that joins the bridleway. Turn right and follow this until you reach Bigpath Lane at the bottom. Cross over the lane by Bigpath Farm and follow the bridleway as it climbs up a steep hill. The bridleway continues for 0.81 miles bringing you to the top of Ashton Lane that merges with Beeches Hill and Belmore Lane at the triangle. Turn left onto Belmore Lane and walk 100 yards until you see the sign for the bridleway on the right hand side of the road. Follow the bridleway onto Stephen’s Castle Down with wonderful views of Beacon Hill and Winchester Hill. (The name derives from earthworks said to have been erected during war with the Empress Maud. King Stephen was the grandson of William the Conqueror and brother of Henry de Blois, Bishop of Winchester, who built Bishops Waltham Palace.) Follow the bridleway as it snakes down the hill to Little Ashton Lane. Walk ahead onto the lane and follow it down as it bears right and climbs up to the junction at Beeches Hill. Turn left onto Beeches Hill for 50 yards then cross the road into Shipcote Lane. Follow the lane to the junction of Vernon Hill and Pondside Lane. You have now come full circle. Cross over into Pondside Lane, back down to Langton Road, turn left, cross the B3035, pond and into the car park. Written by The Meon Valley Wanderer

AUSTRALIA, BEYOND SYDNEY A ustralia is so vast, unless you have unlimited time it is almost impossible to see everything in one visit. Therefore it is important to prioritise what you are looking for from your holiday, whilst Sydney and The Great Barrier Reef are high on most people’s list of must visit destinations, yet Australia has so much more to offer and if good food and wine are high up that list then South Australia should be on it.
Adelaide is approximately 2 hours flying time from Sydney or an amazing 4-day drive along the Great Ocean Road from Melbourne. This is a city that never seems to fail in surprising our clients with its elegance and culture, easy to get around with minimal traffic and a centre that is only a mile square. Adelaide is known for its festivals, alfresco dinning and Mediterranean climate, a charming city that is full of life. With its rugged coastline to the south and the Barossa Valley to the north it is surrounded by beautiful scenery and it is the Barossa Valley that attracts so many people to discover the secrets of South Australia. Australia’s leading wine region with such famous names as Penfolds, Jacobs Creek and Wolfblass are all based in the Barossa, there is ample opportunity to take in wine tasting as well as wine making displays and informal dinning. In fact food is central to this winemaking region and any diets should definitely be put on hold until your return home. With its diverse European culture, it has taken the best of each and brought them together, so from French cheese to German bread and meat or Mediterranean olives and fresh fruit, you will find it all here, put together in Australia’s own unique style.
PROMOTION PERTH, THE GATEWAY TO AUSTRALIA Perth and South West Australia is another area that is easily overlooked but has so much to offer and also boasts the shortest travelling time from the UK with Qantas now running a direct flight from Heathrow to Perth, reducing the travelling time down to 18 hours. Perth is a great place to start your holiday at with Kings Park and the Swan River 2 of its major attractions. Kings Park is actually larger than New York’s Central Park and has many great walks to enjoy along with its Botanical Gardens, whilst The Swan River offers a great way to see the city skyline and learn a little bit of its history at the same time, and what’s better than a twilight cruise watching the sun go down. A short drive or ferry ride from Perth you will find the city of Fremantle, from here you can take a ferry to Rottnest Island to meet the famous Quokkas or just enjoy Fremantle’s Café Culture, visit the local brewery, Little Creatures and take a tour of Fremantle Prison which has a wealth of fascinating history. Just over 2 hours south of Fremantle you will find yourself at the Margaret River, famous for its wineries and can claim to have some of the best wine Australia has to offer, with over 160 wineries in the region, taking a wine tour is a must whilst also finding time to visit one of the regions lighthouses and many impressive and colourful caves. Before moving on you should visit the Underwater Observatory at the end of Busselton Jetty, which is also happens to be the Southern Hemispheres longest jetty at 1.8KM. If you have time you should continue south to Walpole, here the striking coastline of the Southern Forests stretches across 140 kilometres, where beautiful Karri forests sit atop rocky cliffs, and beautiful white sandy beaches are pounded by the wild Southern Ocean. You can visit the Valley of the Giants and take a treetop walk whilst the Walpole Wilderness cruise is a half day cruise like no other. PETERSFIELD SPRING FESTIVAL - MAY 25, 26 & 27 Petersfield Spring Festival. Petersfield Festivals will be making sure Spring has finally sprung when it brings back the Petersfield Spring Festival at the end of May.
PETROLHEADS BRING CARS OUT OF WINTER STORAGE Over a thousand classic car fans flocked to Winchester Auto Barn on the 30th March for its first Breakfast Club of the new season. Petrolheads travelled from as far as Nottingham and London as over 600 cars converged on the garage on the A30 near Sutton Scotney. Italian and German exotica, E-type Jaguars and Caterham 7s rubbed shoulders with US "muscle cars", hand built rarities, pre-war gems and Aston Martins. "The breakfast kicked off at 9am and the car parks were full 15 minutes later with people queuing down the road to get in," said owner Niall Holden. "That's when my jaw dropped. My next worry was that we might run out of bacon butties!" The Winchester Auto Barn's 1964 vintage Citroen HY Van café - dubbed Jacques Custard
- worked overtime, churning out hundreds of beverages, 250 sausage sandwiches and 400 bacon rolls. "I had no idea what to expect as I'd never been before," said Mike Leflay. "There were some great cars and a great bunch of people in such a perfect sunny countryside setting." As well as classic car events the Winchester Auto Barn offers routing services and MOTs on all modern cars and is an Independent Service Agent for Mercedez-Benz. Future Breakfast Clubs will be held on May 25, August 17 and September 21 at the usual time of 9am-12noon. On Saturday July 13th the garage will stage Winchester Auto Fest, a family charity car and live music evening (4pm10.30pm) with a hog roast and wine and cheese tasting. www.winchesterautobarn.com Winchester Autobarn, Sutton Scotney Winchester, SO21 3NS

GARDEN COMMUNITY
EAST MEON GARDEN CLUB – 4TH MARCH MEETING: VEGETABLES AND HERBS TALK GIVEN BY PROFESSOR RAY BROUGHTON
On to carrots. There are five main types and distinctive by their shape: Amsterdam – Nantes – Chantenay – Autumn King – Berlicum Carrots are best grown on sandy, well drained soils with no fresh manure added in the previous season. On heavy soils, the short rooted cultivars are more successful. Spuds. There are different types of potatoes, usually described as early, second early and maincrop potatoes. These names indicate when they crop and also give an idea of the space you’ll need. If you are short of space, concentrate on the earlier crops and it is worth noting that early crops are less prone to encounter pest problems as the potatoes are lifted much earlier in the year.
FROM LEFT TO RIGHT: ALASTAIR DUDLEY-WILLIAMS, PROFESSOR RAY BROUGHTON AND DAVID LEWIN -CHAIRMAN OF THE EAST MEON GARDEN CLUB
The audience was a little bemused at the first slide shown to them at the beginning of the Speaker’s Talk. What was it? Nothing less than a bottle of Heinz Tomato Ketchup (other varieties are available). Where did this fit into the world of horticulture we were asking, when we were given the unlikely answer. Tomato Ketchup is wonderful for cleaning items such as secateurs and hedge clippers. Simply smother the secateurs with the stuff and leave for three days when you brush off and ‘bingo’ your tools are as good as new, bright and shiny. We were informed that half-rotted compost was best for clay soils whilst fully rotted compost was best for light, sandy soils. Brassicas prefer soil to be neutral or even alkaline above pH 7.00 which helps them maximise nutrient output and helps to reduce clubroot spores in the soil. If you can test the soil, you can help raise the pH to 7.00 by adding lime additive. Bonemeal is useless on chalky soils whilst Vitax Q4 is a good compound and contains 13 nutrients. The European Union will shortly be making it mandatory for all fertilisers to be granular but this method takes 2 weeks to reach the vegetables , whereas liquid feed reaches the plant in 24 hours. The humble comfrey can be used as a compost activator. Cuts of fresh comfrey can be laid on the compost heap and layered with weeds or grass cuttings. etc. Comfrey is so rich that it can be used as if it was manure to activate slow growing compost or leaf-mould heaps. Wilted comfrey can also be used to line a potato trench and when growing tomatoes outdoors or in a greenhouse border, wilted and chopped comfrey will add 100% natural organic high potash fertiliser.
Second earlies take between 16 and 17 weeks to mature after planting, therefore you should be able to harvest from end of June through to the beginning of August. Main crops are ready between 18 and 20 weeks after planting and can, therefore, be lifted usually from July through to October. Maincrops take up most space on the plot but do tend to have the best varieties to grow. Professor Broughton suggested growing potatoes in Barley Straw. First of all you need the soil to be loose, so turn it over once and work in some fertiliser to help the potatoes grow. After you have planted the seed potatoes put loose straw over the potatoes and between the rows at least 10 – 15cm deep. When you grow potatoes in straw you’ll see the sprouts quickly. Once they have grown 10cms – 15cms cover them with more straw until only 2.5cms of the new growth shows through, then let the plants grow another 10cms – 15cms. Continue with this procedure for two/three cycles. Be sure to water the plants regularly. Potato blight is caused by a fungus called Phytophthora Infestans. It is transmitted by air, wind and soil. In the UK almost all the blight fungi on the soil surface is killed by the cold weather in winter. If you have a smart ‘phone, there is a free App called The Blight Tracker App (EuroBlight) which sends out ‘blight alerts’ to subscribers, warning of possible blight in their area. Did you know…? • Waterbutts can harbour fungal diseases, put comfrey in your waterbutt, leave a few days and then flush out. • Feverfew attracts butterflies but (supposedly) repels bees • Mushrooms can be grown in composted pine bark • Ladybirds kill aphids by sucking out their juices and one ladybird can kill between 60 and 70 aphids in a day.
• A proprietary product called SB Invigorator controls a wide range of insect pests, including aphids, mealy bug, woolly aphids, scale etc naturally. Plus it will reduce fungal diseases. Can be used underglass and outdoors. It has the benefit of being biodegradable and non-toxic. • White flowering runner beans are wind pollinated whilst red flowering runner beans are insect pollinated. • It is recommended to put Sulphate of Potash on any Spring flowering fruits in December • Grow Tagetes (marigolds) and when the flowers have browned, deadhead and scatter amongst your vegetables and these will help deter white fly. • To suppress weeds, grow nasturtiums, especially good around fruit trees • Chives will help protect roses from blackspot and repel aphids • Nasturtiums repel squash bug and cucumber beetles. They also help suppress weeds and attract bees to the garden to help with pollination. Additionally, flowers, buds and leaves are edible, so an all-round good plant to grow. Finally, Alastair Dudley-Williams gave the vote of thanks for what was a really wonderful talk and to think it all started with a bottle of tomato ketchup! MAKING LITTER PICKING COOL
T
his year saw thousands of school students go on strike for climate change.Young people are fighting for their future and demanding these issues to be taken seriously. But climate change is only one of the problems our planet is dealing with. What else is damaging our planet? Litter. The amount of litter dropped yearly in the UK has increased by 500% since 1960 and the introduction of plastic in everything we buy means that the litter isn’t breaking down. Instead, it risks blowing into drains and rivers and making its way to our oceans. Around the world it’s estimated that one million birds and 100,000 marine mammals and sea turtles die each year when they ingest or become trapped in plastic. To us, it’s a plastic bag but to a sea creature, it looks like a jelly fish - a tasty snack. All ocean litter must start somewhere and while some is dumped straight into the ocean, it’s also as simple as a crisp packet blowing into a river. A whopping 80% of the rubbish in the ocean comes from land. Some of this might blow out of rubbish collection trucks, some could be blown out of landfill and some is simply littered by individuals. Next time you’re walking or driving somewhere, have a look out for litter, it won’t take you long to find it.You might see a straw lingering near a drain, waiting to make its way into our water ways, or a takeaway coffee lid tumbling closer towards a stream or river. You could be a real hero and help save our oceans by picking up even just one piece of litter as and when you’re out and about. You can also save our wildlife. Every year, the RSPCA receives 5000 calls regarding animals affected by litter. They get an average of 14 calls per day, and it can be higher in the summer months. These are just the animals that are found, the actual figure of animals injured by litter could be much higher. Plastic can holders can often entangle animals. Turtles have been found with deformed shells, birds have been found with bottle rings around their necks, hedgehogs have been found with their heads stuck in yoghurt pots and takeaway milkshake lids. As these still have sweet leftovers in, they are very attractive to an
animal who reaches in to get as much as possible only to find it’s then stuck on their head. By picking up litter, you can help prevent this from happening. We can all work together to spread the message, that it is not cool to litter, by tackling it with education and leading by example. Litter pick loud and proud and show people that it’s cool to care. Not only will you be real life super hero by picking up litter in your community, and wherever you go, you’ll also find it great exercise. A one-mile walk will add up to about 2000 steps and might take around 15 minutes. You’ll also be carrying a bag of litter, really getting in that weight lifting! Or you could get yourself a litter trolley if you plan to pick big! As well as being great for our physical health; being outside, wherever you plan to pick, will instantly improve your mood. Being outdoors is proven to reduce stress and anxiety, lower blood pressure and relieve muscle tension. The knowledge that we are doing something that benefits our planet and our future can have a positive contribution to our mental health. You might also find that organising an event in your community or joining an existing group of litter pickers can forge new friendships and help tackle loneliness, which affects almost a fifth of the population. If you’re on social media, share your litter haul with hashtags such as #litterpicking, #makelitterpickingcool, #2minutestreetclean or #keepbritaintidy. You’ll find other members of the litter picking community who will tell you how awesome you are! Between 2016 and 2017 it cost local authorities £682 million (£29 per household) to keep our streets clean and councils don’t have enough funding to tackle every piece of litter in their towns. You can contact your council and they will provide you with litter picking equipment, so you can work together to ensure you have a town you are proud to live in. Why not give litter picking a go? Love where you live, help our planet and positively impact your local community. Together we can make litter picking cool!

LAWN MOWING MADE EASY – OR AT LEAST A LITTLE EASIER!
the same order or drive to work the same route. It makes things easier for us as we don’t have to think about the mundane stuff. We just do it. Most people are the same with their lawn mowing. Rarely do they vary their approach or direction of mow. They start at point A and finish at point B. As you mow your lawn, the weight of the mower and the forward motion pushes the grass leaf in the direction you are mowing. Over time the grass begins to lean over this way making it harder to get a clean cut. Varying the direction of mow helps to promote healthy grass growth and makes for a more attractive lawn. It also reduces the chance of ruts forming from the wheels of the mower pressing into the turf repeatedly.
H
Now to look at mowing frequency; let’s face it, we are all busy people. Most of us work hard all week and often hard on the weekend too. Speak to those lucky enough to be retired and they usually tell you they’ve never been busier. When we are busy or tired there is a tendency not to get everything done on time. The problem with mowing is that the grass just keeps on growing. Miss a mow and it’s longer than ever.
ow often is lawn mowing doing more harm that you might think? Lawn mowing is one of those garden tasks that many people think they can do themselves. Some get it right and do a wonderful job; others are regularly getting it wrong. Perhaps you’d be surprised to learn how much harm you can do to your lawn by not getting the basics right. By now you might be wondering; just what it is that you need to know before mowing your lawn? When it comes to lawn mowing there are really three main considerations; height, direction of cut and frequency. Let’s look at each of them in turn. Mowing height is a fine balance between keeping the grass tidy and looking superb, along with allowing the grass to have enough leaf to photosynthesise and remain healthy. Plants use the green pigment in their leaves, along with sunlight, to synthesise nutrients from carbon dioxide and water. Remove too much leaf and you are reducing the ability of the grass plants in your lawn to create food. Weakening the grasses and allowing diseases to take hold. The grass dies back leaving bare patches where weed seeds and moss spores can settle, germinate and spoil the appearance of your lawn. By all means mow your lawn short, but don’t do it suddenly. Only ever reduce the mowing height gradually over time. If you want to mow short then ensure growing conditions are right. Warm but not too hot. Moist, but not too much rain, and of course adequate fertiliser. Speak to a lawn care professional to ensure your lawn is receiving the treatments it needs to keep it healthy before you reduce its chances of feeding itself. Ideally you should be varying the cut height throughout the growing season. Starting high as grass growth slowly begins in spring. Lowering as the growing season warms up and growth is more vigorous. Raising the height again in the dry, hot weeks of summer when the longer grass will protect the soil from drying out and capture more dew overnight to help water the lawn. Then, gradually lowering again with the lush growth that comes in autumn. Finally you want to be going into winter with longer grass, better able to survive the stressful bad weather. Humans are by nature creatures of habit. Think about your day and the things you do regularly, the same way each time. We get ready for bed in
As the grass plants grow taller the stems of the plants extended into your cutting zone. When you do finally catch up you are inevitably taking off too much leaf. Cutting into the stem of the grass shocks the plant. Making it less able to recover from the mow and more susceptible to diseases and die-back. Plus the lawn looks scalped and untidy. Mowing can feel like a never-ending job and grass growth can be unforgiving. Lawn care professionals have access to growth suppressants. Applied to your lawn they reduce growing height and encourage more compact, dense growth. They also encourage root growth, creating a more drought tolerant lawn. Speak to a lawn care professional to find out more. Mowing is a Marmite kind of job; those that love it, really love it and those that don’t, thoroughly hate it. After all, if you work hard all week, or if you are at a stage in life where hard work is behind you, then maybe there is something else you’d rather be doing than mowing the lawn. Create some you-time and leave your lawn care to the professionals. You might be surprised by how affordable a professional lawn care plan is and I’m certain you’ll be impressed by the professional results. Of the 12 gardens we have 4 which are opening for the first time and 1 which has not opened for four years. The remaining 7 gardens will no doubt have changed during the last two years. Some gardens will also have plants for sale. We publish a Garden Guide containing information about each of the gardens: a short passage and a photograph. A map shows where each of the gardens is within Bishop’s Waltham and we have included footpaths, so that people can use shortcuts. Car parks are shown and some gardens do have parking for those with limited mobility. There will be refreshments at 4 different gardens, ranging from ice creams to soft drinks to tea & coffee and cakes. Why not make plans to spend the whole day in Bishop’s Waltham on June 30th? Admittance to the gardens is by Garden Guide, price £5.00 per person. The guides will be on sale at Hazel’s florist in the High Street during June and on the day in Red Lion Street (next to Costa). Guides will also be on sale at each of the open gardens. The hidden gardens are open from 11am - 5pm.

THE PELICAN GRIEF "G ood heavens – did you see that? It was George from down the road – lives in Foxglove Cottage. What, in the name of all that’s decent was he wearing? Surely no man over a certain age should be trussed up in such an outfit..?” Aghast, he was craning his neck around far enough to do himself a mischief. And her too, if he carried on looking where they’d been, rather than where they were going.
“Car.” She suggested calmly. No response. “CAR!” much louder as, indeed a car was approaching - and they were on its side of the road. He swerved and averted disaster, raising his hand automatically in apology, whilst clearly suffering from shock. “But it’s such good exercise Darling. Low impact, with the added benefit of fresh air and lovely scenery. Good for the psyche.” She’d been thinking that, in addition to the dog walking and gardening, they should extend their exercise regime to include cycling. Something that they could do together, she had romantic notions of pedalpowered picnics in the countryside, biking to the pub and riding to the village shop on a Sunday morning for the papers. But he had the bit between his teeth “Well, I wouldn’t be seen dead in a get-up like that. Ridiculous. There’s gangs of these lycra-clad road hogs, you know - and no hope of passing them when they’re strung out along these country roads in a Pelican!” “Peloton” she’d heard it on the TV. “Well, whatever - they weave about, neither fast enough to follow, nor slow enough to overtake. Positively dangerous, if you ask me.” Well, she wasn’t asking him. Moreover, she hadn’t asked him before ordering a pair of his and hers bikes off the internet that were due to arrive that afternoon, according to the helpful text updates. Awkward. She felt an errand coming on. One that would take dear old hubby off to the builder’s merchants, or maybe the garden centre… Pet shop – yes, that would do it. She checked her texts; bicycle delivery was at half three which, coincidentally, would be about the time they would urgently require a giant sack of kibble and a slab of tinned meat for their faithful and ever-hungry Labradors. Later, he had returned from his successful expedition, armed with numerous chews and a new dog bed that had not been on the list. Driving there and back without any inflammatory encounters with cyclists, he seemed to have put the subject to bed. Much as she had the two bicycles now in the shed, draping the gleaming black and
chrome machines in an old blanket. Hybrid crossovers, with big comfy seats and bullhorn style handlebars, such as she had purchased, could go everywhere apparently and she’d have dearly loved to leap astride hers and pedal off through the village and down the country lanes. Shame. However, slowly slowly catchy monkey – as her dear old mum would have said… Later, replete after a Dine-In-For-Not-Very-Much-Money that she hadn’t had to cook, they sat on the sofa, each with glass of red in hand, dogs at their feet. With feigned innocence she enquired “Do you mind if we watch something on i-player, Darling?” “Whatever you like, Darling. Just so long as it’s not some medical programme.” He shuddered theatrically. “It’s Rick Stein – one of his ’Long Weekends’.” She quickly pressed the button and Rick appeared, extolling the virtues of the Danish capital for a short break. Hubby’s attention was drawn to the screen. He liked Rick. She liked Rick. Pretty sure the dogs liked Rick. What was not to like: affable and watchable as he enjoyed his food, sort of reminding her of her very own darling husband. But with a longer fuse and good at cooking. Frikadeller, turbot, prawns and pastries – an ensemble of her beloved’s favourite foods looked deliciously appealing. And when scenes of Rick cycling in a leisurely fashion around Copenhagen appeared, he was sufficiently softened up to find that appealing too. Pointing at the screen he enthused “Now, there’s the sort of cycling that I like. None of this hunching over drop handlebars, on a knifeedge prostate-killing saddle, shrink-wrapped in a suit that shows every lump, bump and roll of fat. Sitting up comfortably, wearing ordinary clothes, enjoying the scenery – going to the pub, maybe off on a picnic, or even to the village shop on a Sunday morning to collect the papers. I’d be up for that!” “Really?” “Absolutely!” Surreptitiously, she cancelled the rather fetching black cycling shorts she’d imagined him wearing, and, with his enthusiasm still fresh, she took his darling hand and led him up the garden path to the bike shed.. © 2019 Lucia Foster-Found

PROFESSIONAL COMMUNITY climb into your tent and leave at your leisure on Sunday morning! THE PUB WITH NO NAME An empty metal frame atop a tall signpost marks the point where you turn off the road towards the pub formerly known as the White Horse. Stories of how and when the pub lost it’s sign are vague and varied, but somewhere along the way it adopted the handle by which it is better known today; The Pub with No Name.
THE RIDE WITH NO NAME JUNE 8 The Ultimate Pub Ride: 30km & 1,000m climbing! The Ride with No Name may be the biggest 30km ride you’ll take on this year! The ultimate early evening ride, starting and finishing at one of Hampshire’s finest pubs, it features a massive 1,000m of climbing and descending in a relentless but little known pocket of hills called the Hangers. Let’s put that in perspective for a moment. 1,000m of climbing in 30km is 50% more climb per km than the South Downs Way (which sits a few miles to the south). This is a short ride with a big punch!
steep climbs to barrelling single track descents, gnarly little drop-ins and perilous rain-rut runs. All in one of the most beautiful hidden corners of the countryside that you’ve (probably) never heard of! As if that wasn’t enough, the ride is based from (and named for) the local legend that is The Pub with No Name, one of the very best country pubs you’ll find. A charming 17th Century hostelry, it serves a wide selection of excellent beers, and delicious home cooked food. The perfect place to finish your ride and enjoy a pint and bite to eat!

Then again you're very welcome to do something in between it is completely up to you! This really is an awesome event for anyone who's keen to try a new distance and doesn't want the pressure of a set length course. It

REVENGE OF THE FIFTH - 5TH MAY This is a 6 hour timed mulitlap event. Each lap being approximately 3.3 miles. The trail is a compact gravel for the whole course. 4 laps for a half marathon, 8 for a marathon, and 9 for an Ultra. Set on what was the old railway line from Fareham to East Meon, now known as the Meon Valley Trail, we can use this track with kind permission from Hampshire County Council and Wickham Parish Council.
It’s a bit of a local legend, as pubs go. As well as being famous for being hard to find*, it is renowned for it’s excellent range of real ales, classic malt whiskies and superb home cooked food. The pub itself is a beautiful 17th Century building in the quintessential British country pub mould; cosy bars and log fires lead back to a spacious but homely restaurant area, with a large garden outside to enjoy in the summer months. There is plenty of parking on site too, and a large camping field, from where the Ride with No Name will be based, and where you can book a pitch to camp over after the event, so you can make the most of the evening and enjoy the full hospitality of the brilliant pub! *In spite of it’s reputation, it’s actually not hard to get to with good directions and our signs to guide you! www.trailbreak.co.uk/the-ride-with-noname/ The Pub with No Name, Priors Dean, Petersfield GU32 1DA Please arrive in good time, and there will be a full briefing at 9.20 before the race starting at 9.30. As this is a timed event in the spring, please dress for all weather possibilities. If we are lucky then the course is normally awash with Bluebells alongside the track. The course is a good surface, so road shoes will probably be ok, but it will be down to you on the day to make your shoe choice. We will provide snacks, goodies and fun. One lap will get you the medal. We cater for all speeds, and for all distances. So whether you want to push yourself to your first 10km, or to your 100th marathon, all your needs will be looked after. Treloar students and other local young people with disabilities will benefit from this incredible new OLC, including Isabel who has cerebral palsy, is registered blind and has language and social communication difficulties. One thing Isabel absolutely loves is to be outside - she loves to hear the birds singing, the sound of plants rustling and the running water from the water feature. Isabel has recently enjoyed planting spring bulbs. When they flower, she will be able to locate them using her sense of smell, as they were planted near some rosemary and thyme. Staff work with Isabel to describe the environment and what plants, people and wildlife are around her and the overall sensory experience brings much excitement and opportunity for her. The OLC will bring about many new learning opportunities for students like Isabel and Treloar’s are exceptionally grateful to the National Garden Scheme for their generous support to this appeal.

DO I NOW NEED TO PLAN FOR MY PROBATE FEES?!?
Currently, the cost of obtaining probate is relatively nominal - it costs the deceased’s estate £155 for a professional application or £215 for a personal application - but now probate fees are planned to rocket to eye watering levels. This increase was due to come in to effect in the summer of 2017 but was put on the back burner following lots of objections. However, it was announced recently by the Ministry of Justice that the planned changes are likely to take effect in April but, as of yet, no official date has been set as the government say there has not yet been time for the motion to be brought before parliament. The new ‘banded fee’ structure will see larger estates, of more than £2m, pay a court fee of £6,000 in order to obtain the necessary grant of representation. This is the document that evidences a personal representative’s legal right to access estate assets. It has been argued by many members of the profession, and members of public, that this a "death tax" and given the sharp increase, it is quite reasonable to agree with this statement - especially given that many estates cannot be administered (in
accordance with a loved one's wishes) without the grant. However, it is not all bad news. At the moment, it is only estates worth more than £5,000 that are required to pay the court fee in order to obtain a grant. But, as a result of the planned changes, estates worth less than £50,000 will not be charged a court fee at all. Furthermore, the banded fee increase is relatively modest for estates up to £500,000. It is only when estates are worth between £500,000 and £1m (and upwards) that there is a significant hit of fees. The estate practitioners here at Trethowans are working tirelessly to do what they can to submit applications before the increase is introduced and this consequently is putting more pressure on the probate registrars who have seen a noticeable increase in applications in recent months. As an additional consequence, the issuing of the grants themselves is taking longer and this, therefore, needs to be taken into account by personal representative who will be answerable to beneficiaries raising the question of how long will the administration process take. Members of the Trethowans private client team are doing their upmost to keep their clients updated as to the position surroundings the Court fees but it is likely that notice of the immediate increase will be short. Therefore if you are a personal representative who is attempting an application for a grant, you would be well advised to move quickly, and where appropriate, seek legal assistance. GABEFEST 2019: FRIDAY 26 AND SATURDAY 27 JULY
CAPITAL BUILDING CONTRACTS & PROJECT MANGEMENT Capital Building Contracts & Project Management is a well established building company offering a wide range of building services throughout Hampshire, Sussex and Surrey. Capital Building Contracts & Project Management is ran by Michael Harris, who
has an in depth experience of the building industry established over the last 30 years. Michael works as the principal contractor/ project manager and undertakes small to large scale projects, bringing in specialist sub contractors where necessary.
Starting as a celebration of 50 years on this planet, Gabefest was born from the imagination of a couple of local music makers and a very gullible fruit farmer. We are happy to have created a fun filled, affordable event where parents and children can have a weekend of music, camping and giggles.
Michael prides himself on delivering projects on time and to budget, whilst establishing a close working relationship with his clients. Working as both the building contractor and project manager, this helps to save his clients both time and money.
Gabefest prides itself in its simplicity. Side by side stages, food stalls and a bar. Throw in some fun stuff for the little ones, a late night dance party plus a cosy campfire. Simple. Big enough to lose yourself, yet small enough to not miss a thing.
Capital Building Contracts & Project Management understakes barn conversions, oak timber framing, loft conversions, new builds and extensions together with all the associated works.
Berkeley Farm, where Gabefest is held, is the home of Durley Strawberries and we are proud to have supported Hampshire food banks with our produce for over a decade. Profits from Gabefest are also used to support these great local charities.
References and testimonials can be provided upon request. Michael can be contacted on 01730 823865, 07733 220670 or by email at michaelharris.508@btinternet.com

of nature” explains Corinne, one of the designers at Pat Staples Interiors “these vibrant botanical designs breathe new life into rooms, both big and small. Here at Pat Staples Interiors we suggest you add this refreshing burst of colour with blinds or curtains made up in a delicately printed fabric, reflecting both the art and science of flowers. Or maybe let us re-upholster an existing heirloom chair in a stunning woven design, with elegant foliage on dark background, to make a real statement” Look out for palm prints, exotic fruits and monkeys as the key motifs to achieve this summery look in your own home.
Bold botanical fabrics in the home are going from strength to strength this season with key colours including leaf green, mustard, nude pink and cobalt blue. “This uplifting trend is a joyous celebration

FEATURE
BIG OR SMALL, PONDS FOR ALL! Wild About Gardens is back, and this year we need everyone to jump right in and make a splash with ponds!
F
or this year’s Wild About Gardens challenge, we have teamed up with the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) to encourage everyone to create a pond. From mini container ponds to larger sunken ponds, these attractive garden features are hugely beneficial for wildlife. With much of the UK’s native flora and fauna under threat, often due to habitat loss,Wild About Gardens aims to raise awareness of the importance of gardens in supporting wildlife and offer tips and advice on how to make them more wildlifefriendly. The UK has lost ponds, rivers and streams at a rapid rate and only a small amount of our natural ponds and wetlands remain. Many of these are in poor condition and 13% of freshwater and wetland species are threatened with extinction from Great Britain. The loss of these important places – to development, drainage and intensive farming – is linked to a huge decline in wildlife, including frogs and toads, water voles and insects. Adding a pond – by digging one in your back garden or simply by filling a waterproof container outside your front
door – is one of the best ways you can help wildlife and enjoy the benefits of seeing water plants, birds and bees close to home. Digging a pond is great for hedgehogs to have somewhere to drink and for frogs, newts and other amphibians to feed and breed. All ponds – large, small, dug or container – are good news for bats, damselflies, dragonflies, other insects. Download your free pond toolkit and find more inspiration for making your garden a wildlife haven at www.wildaboutgardens.org.uk. Alternatively visit our events page for wetland or wildlife gardening events at www.hiwwt.org.uk/events. Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust is one of 46 Wildlife Trusts working across the UK.With the invaluable support of volunteers and members we manage over 50 nature reserves. We also work with other organisations and landowners to protect and connect wildlife sites across the county and inspire local communities and young people to care for wildlife where they live.

Members of staff dedicated their time yesterday (8 April) to helping members of the local community clear litter and hazardous rubbish dumped at Frogs Copse, a woodland area located right next to the airport. Joining forces with local residents, the team collected more than ten full bags of rubbish, including golf clubs, plastic signs and pieces of carpet. Neil Garwood, Managing Director at Southampton Airport, said: “We are proud to have organised such a positive event yesterday. The area that we focused on clearing is very often used by children as a shortcut from Bitterne Park so it is important to keep it tidy and free of hazards. “It’s incredible how much rubbish accumulates in such a small area. We are commited to working with our community to make the areas around the airport cleaner and safer.”
