Titchfield Festival Theatre: Jamaica Inn

Nobody does Gothic like Daphne du Maurier. A decrepit inn without guests, wild moors, sinister fogs, smugglers, shipwrecks, a dashing horse thief, an albino vicar, and a murder mystery – all of the ingredients are there when orphaned Mary Yellan arrives at Jamaica Inn to live with her aunt. This unrelenting drama tells her story as she unravels the mystery of her uncle’s business, piecing together tales of depravity and deception along the Cornish coast. Daphne Du Maurier’s, Jamaica Inn is brought to life in this new stage production that is every bit as haunting as the original novel. Sure to keep an audience on the edge of their seats. Make your OLD kitchen a NEW kitchen for a fraction of the cost of buying a new kitchen Our kitchen and utility room have been transformed and we are totally happy! Having spent far too long deliberating over a new kitchen it was a relief when Ben visited us at home. He understood immediately what we were trying to achieve and gave us excellent practical advice and good ideas to refine and improve our plans. His 'can do', energetic and professional approach is brilliant and he made the whole process easy and straightforward. His team of craftsmen, in particular Dan, are wonderful. Courteous, friendly and professional, their workmanship, knowledge and attention to detail is amazing. Everything (and more!) was done within the time frames given. I just wish we'd given Ben the job years ago! Sue & Rob Harris Happy Kitchens are quite unique as we are able to offer top quality products, available in any size, fitted by the best professionals in the business. WINCHESTER FESTIVAL

T

5TH - 13TH JULY

he Winchester Festival returns with a packed programme of talks that will take us from Charles Spencer’s account of Charles II evading capture by Cromwell’s army to Andrew Marr’s history of modern Britain to Simon Schama’s contemporary reflections on the arts, politics and food. The concerts will bring you sacred vocal music from the Sistine Chapel, Renaissance repertoire from Spain, Portugal and the New World and a quintessentially English evening of Elgar and Vaughan Williams in the Cathedral. John Keats, who wrote Ode to Autumn while in Winchester, is remembered in a dramatic presentation and in actor walks and the talented young musicians of Winchester will once again be delighting audiences in the lunchtime series.

Since the Festival started in 1998 there has been an extraordinary increase in the number of concerts and talks happening in Winchester so that every week - almost every day - there are wonderful performances across the city. Winchester now has a wealth of music and literature throughout the year and we have decided, with a great deal of deliberation and a lot of sadness, that this will be the final Winchester Festival. We hope you will find many events to interest you in this year’s programme and that our last Festival will be one to remember. We are hugely grateful and indebted to everyone who has been involved with the Festival over the last twenty two years – the sponsors, individual donors and patrons, Hampshire County Council and Winchester City Council, the local performers and the performers who come to us from much further afield, the staff and volunteers, and, most of all, the audiences – indeed everyone who has made the Festival so inspiring and rewarding to be involved with. We very much look forward to seeing you at some of the events in July for this, the final, Winchester Festival. Carol Butler, Festival Director Ginny Sherriff, Literature Consultant The twenty-second Winchester Festival showcases music, talks, drama, visual arts and guided walks in nine days of events in venues across the city.

Production of the range of gins, such as Hampshire favourites, Twisted Nose Watercress Gin and Winchester Dry Gin, is reaching capacity at peak times throughout the year so installation of a higher volume still is required to continue to grow the business. Movement into new product lines such as rum and whisky, both of which have been in development over the last year, will also be able to commence once a brewhouse is created onsite. Hampshire-grown malted barley will be used to create the base spirit for gin, vodka and whisky, as well as processing molasses to make rum.

The country markets were first set up to allow households to use and sell their excess produce. The main focus was jams and chutneys but soon this grew to honey, baked goods, fruit, vegetables and crafts. It left its original roots of the WI markets when it became a cooperative organisation whereby producers paid a sum to join (it is still only 5p!) and a proportion of the sales goes to keep the market running. Bishops Waltham Country Market meets weekly at the Jubilee Hall on a Friday 10.0012.00. The market has evolved into a bustling part of the community and has moved with the times to accommodate changing tastes and needs. We still provide customers with home grown, home, baked, home produced goods to the highest standard, but now we accommodate cooking for gluten free, dairy free, vegetarian and vegan diets. We provide ready meals if required and customers can order produce in advance. The large hall enables us to provide coffee and teas with a piece of cake of the week for a small charge. Come along and join us and you will find a thriving market place with room for everyone (wheel chairs and buggies welcome). We endeavour to be part of the community and take part in local events. You will have seen us celebrating 100 years at the carnival. We are also well known for catering at many local events. We are always happy to welcome new producers and customers alike. If you are interested in becoming a producer please get in touch. As a new customer please come along on a Friday morning, the purchasing system is quite quirky but where else will you be able to talk to the cooks of your baked goods and ask about the recipes, or discuss what stitches are best to use for a baby’s blanket? We welcome you all. And here’s to another 100 years! www.country-markets.co.uk

Julie Armstrong who attended the event with her husband, their adult son and his girlfriend and friends visiting from Croatia said: “It’s such a brilliant event, my son and his girlfriend came down to Bishop’s Waltham from Nottingham for the weekend, especially to join in as we had told them how good previous events had been. Our visitors from Croatia were ecstatic about the experience – it was a real highlight of their visit to the UK”.

Among the participants were large groups of friends, families with members from 3 generations and individuals; some of whom had just moved to Bishop’s Waltham and were using this event as a way to discover new shops and places to eat. One couple had just popped down to Bishop’s Waltham from an outlying village to buy some meat from Grover Butchers and found out about the event. Luckily there were a few tickets still available so their trip to buy some meat for the weekend turned into a 3 hour tour of the very best of what Bishop’s Waltham can offer in food! BISHOP'S WALTHAM MUSEUM: OPEN WEEKENDS AND BANK HOLIDAYS UNTIL THE END OF SEPTEMBER Our new exhibition for 2019 is entitled 'Rediscover Bishop's Waltham.' It includes exhibits and information on Mark Henry Blanchard, a world leading industrialist.

Henrietta and of course its own mice, 7 to be found. We are also delighted that Bishop’s Waltham Junior School Year 4 pupils have created an exhibition on “the Anglo-Saxons – the ruin of Britain?”. Every child has at least one piece of work on display, including beautiful drawings and brooches like shields. Come and have a look and you can decide: Were the AngloSaxons “heroes or zeros”?

Mark Henry Blanchard was one of the most important terracotta manufacturers in Britain providing architectural items for Buckingham Palace, St Pancras Station, the Natural History Museum and exporting all over the world. In 1871 he took over Arthur Help’s failed terracotta works at Claylands, Bishop's Waltham and moved all his works from London to develop a thriving brick business as well. Our exhibition includes samples of his very fine terracotta work as well as a range of his bricks. Bricks were left in the open air to dry as part of the process and local historian, Tony Kippenberger has been busy photographing animal footprints on the bricks of the older properties in Bishops Waltham. We’ve found 46 in the town so far - how many can you find? The Blanchard display has its own cat, called

GREAT ROAD TRIPS OF THE USA T he USA continues to be a top seller in the UK tourist market and it is easy to see why with such stunning scenery, awe inspiring canyons and some of the world’s most Iconic manmade structures. With so much to see, holidays in the USA tend to be multi centre itineraries, and the best way to get around is by car, with the low cost of fuel, the plentiful supply of hotels and motels along the popular routes and reasonably uncongested roads (outside of the big cities), it all makes for a great adventure.

At Amity Travel Tailor Made we find the most popular selfdrive holidays to be to the Canyon lands and National Parks of the Western States and/or the Pacific Coast. Amity Travel have been tailoring such holidays to suite your own personal requirements for many years and can not only save you time and money but take away all the stress of arranging such complicated itineraries. With so much to see it is difficult to know where to start, for many the bright lights of Las Vegas are a fun filled introduction to the Wild West before heading off to the awe inspiring Grand Canyon National Park, the unique Bryce Canyon (Forest of Stone) is also well worth visiting and for many clients it turns out to be the surprise highlight. Zion National Park is another must stop with its towering red granite walls, the park has some fantastic nature trails where you may catch site of a Skunk or ring tailed cat as well as Peregrine Falcons and Eagle. Whilst for something more unusual Death Valley, on the border of Nevada & California with its desert of streaming sand dunes, multi coloured rocks and water fluted canyons will make for some great photo opportunities, there is also the chance to join a ranger on a tour of the historic mining sites and sun drenched salt flats. Further north and a park that fits in well with San

PROMOTION Francisco and the Pacific Coast is Yosemite National Park and the legendary Giant Sequoias, just 3 hours east of San Francisco,Yosemite is one of the best known parks and there is something for everyone here from stargazing and moonlight wildlife tours to rock climbing and rafting as well as Yosemite Mule Ride Adventures where you can enjoy the breath-taking views and majestic scenery of this incredible national park. Depending on your time The Pacific Coast line has much to offer and can be added to a National Parks and Canyonlands tour or as a standalone itinerary, starting with San Francisco; this is unquestionably one of the best loved cities in the USA. Home to the Golden Gate Bridge, Cable Cars, Alcatraz, Pier 39 and Chinatown, this city is instantly recognisable, Alcatraz is the major highlight for many and advance booking is always recommended. The drive south from San Francisco along state highway 1, taking in Monterey and Carmel, you can go whale watching off the Monterey Coast where Humpback Whales can be found from Spring right through to Autumn. Continue driving South taking in the stunning views of the Pacific coastal road known as the Big Sur, this is a great way to end or start your time in California, and don’t forget to visit a winery or two along the way with plenty of options in the Napa Valley just north of San Francisco and also at San Luis Obispo in the Central Coast Wine Country, north of Los Angeles.

You may well be thinking that such a full on itinerary is not going to be cheap, but it does not have to cost an arm and a leg either, with some great deals on flights outside of the school holidays and with a mixture of good quality hotels, National park lodges and motel accommodation it can work out very reasonable indeed. Young Ali Baba stumbles across an enchanted cave when he overhears the magic words that open it: “Open Sesame!”. Inside the cave he finds untold amounts of gold and jewels, and takes some of it home to show his wife. But what will he do when she chides him for stealing? Can he keep the secret from his jealous brother? And when the Robber King comes looking for the missing treasure supported by an army of 40 angry thieves – will he and his family survive? The show is notable for a scene where one character polishes off most of the thieves – 37 to be precise, and you can count each one – with a cast of just five of the most hardworking actors in the business! Illyria was the first company to tour children’s theatre on this scale in the open-air touring sector. Following their enormous successes with The Adventures Of Doctor Dolittle,The Emperor’s New Clothes, Danny The Champion Of The World,The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, George’s Marvellous Medicine, Babe The Sheep-Pig and The Twits they are also regarded as the best. Now in their 28th season, they return with one of their most popular ever shows, last performed in 2003. Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves! This is adapted from the One Thousand and One Nights (otherwise known as the Arabian Nights). Like all the stories in this towering literary classic it is packed with cliff-hangers, larger-than-life characters, and laughs galore. WESSEX ART FAIR: FRIDAY 7TH SUNDAY 16TH JUNE Sarah O’Rorke of Hampshire art consultancy, Forton Fine Art, is collaborating with Mayfair Gallery’s Tiffany Panter and Matthew Hall of Panter & Hall, to put on a Summer Exhibition. The Wessex Art Fair will be on from Friday 7th to Sunday 16th June in Hurstbourne Priors. With years of working in the art world, the organisers understand all too well how a piece of art can be transformative to a home.Too often, artwork is the final instalment and yet it can make an impact on a room, it can provide a private corner to stop and reflect, it can bring a room together, it can give a traditional space a contemporary feel or it can be used to make a home welcoming and warm. Bringing the best of the two galleries’ artists together, the exhibition will be showing work by both emerging artists alongside the more established. The organisers’ intention is that visitors can enjoy the highest quality exhibition whilst at the same time feel confident that they can find a piece of art to fit their budget.Their greatest wish, though, is that visitors will find a painting or sculpture with which they have a connection. Matthew Hall talks about it as ‘the perfect pairing of painting and client, the sense that the buyer before you is the only fit recipient of your treasured discovery’. So whether looking for an investment or a treasured piece of art, the organisers invite you to visit the exhibition just outside Hurstbourne Priors at The Barn, Chapmansford Farm House, RG28 7RR. Information on the exhibition can be found on the Forton Fine Art website, www. fortonfineart.co.uk. The Wessex Art Fair, Hurstbourne Priors, RG28 7RR

GARDEN COMMUNITY impress a professional panel at schools such as Central or LAMDA. Many come to us having played the lead roles in the school play, they have wowed their friends and families in local productions and passed graded exams with flying colours. What sets our students apart is that they are smart enough to realise that is not enough.” This expert advice is worth listening to as Vicki and Anita have coached students who are attending, or have scholarships, and offers to Central, GSA, Rose Bruford, Italia Conti, Sylvia Young, Mountview, Wilkes Academy and Oxford University.

The New Forest and Hampshire County Show is donating all proceeds from child ticket sales at the 2019 Show to the Samantha and Florence Bailey Bursary. Vicki, who was a scholar at The Guildhall School of Music says, “Students need specific training for the task at hand. Preparation for this pivotal moment in their lives is key to our students' success.” Watching Vicki and Anita's lessons it's clear that it is not just their pupils who have something special. From Shakespeare to Showtunes, these women run what can only be described as a Masterclass in singing and performance. Their ethos is clear, too. The competition is fierce, so work hard, hone your craft and then you can dream big.

GARDEN FEATURE

HELP SAVE THE HONEY BEE Saving the bees is a big job- but taking action is easy! By starting in your own community, you can help make our world a healthier place for bees. Here are some things that you can do to save our bees: Protect bee habitat One of the largest threats to bees is the lack of habitat due to urban sprawl. If you notice a lack of green space in your neighborhood, you can volunteer to plant a bee garden or create a habitat corridor with nectarrich plants such as wildflowers. You don’t need a ton of space to help save the bees- gardens can be established in small spaces like balconies or street corners, and flowers can be planted along roadways and other public areas. You can also get involved with your local government to advocate sensible limits to development where you live. Avoid harmful pesticides Synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, and herbicides are harmful to bees. Using these pesticides in your garden can not only keep bees away, but also endanger their lives. If you must treat your garden, opt for organic pesticide options and spray at night when pollinators are least active. Or use beneficial insects such as praying mantises and ladybugs in your garden. Avoid chemicals belonging to the neonicotinoid family at all costs, as they are especially harmful to bees. Plant a bee-friendly garden Flowers help feed bees and other valuable pollinators. Not only will you be helping save the bees by planting bee-friendly plants, but you’ll helping your garden as well. Some tips: • Avoid hybrid flowers, which may be sterile and have little or no nectar or pollen • Skip the double flowers, which lack pollen • Make sure you’ll have blooms for bees year round. • Plant flowers in patches - bees like to focus on one flower type at a time • Leave an undisturbed plot for ground-nesting bees

Bees Need Trees Bees aren’t only just interested in perennials! In fact, did you know that bees get most of their nectar from trees? When a tree blooms, it provides bees with hundreds if not thousands of blossoms to feed from. Trees are not only a great food source for bees but they are also essential to a bees habitat.Tree leaves and resin provide nesting material for bees, while their natural wood cavities make excellent shelters. With deforestation and development on the rise, you can help bolster bee habitats by caring for trees and joining tree-planting parties in your area. Create a Bee Bath A fun activity that can also help save the bees is creating a bee bath. Fill a shallow bird bath or a small dish or bowl with clean water, and arrange pebbles and stones inside so that they poke out of the water. Bees will land on the stones and pebbles to drink the water as they take a break from foraging and pollinating. Build homes for solitary and bumble bees Did you know that, with the exception of honeybees, most bees are solitary creatures? 70% of bees live underground, while 30% live in holes inside of trees or hollow stems. Since many solitary and bumble bees build their nests in undisturbed land, why not keep an untouched plot of land for them in your garden? “Bee condos” allow solitary bees like mason bees to take up residence and pollinate your garden, and are widely available for sale online. You can also learn how to build your own bee condo and create a better space for solitary bees. Become a Bee Ambassador You can do your part to save the bees on your own, but just like a colony of honeybees, making real change takes strength in numbers! Educate your friends, family, and community on how to help bees by becoming a bee ambassador. Current bee ambassadors engage others by asking for bee-benefitting donations in lieu of birthday gifts, and selling muffins door to door. Get creative with ways to raise funds and get the buzz out on saving bees! For more information visit: https://thehoneybeeconservancy.org

HOOKED G

olden, late September sunlight slanted through the beech branches overhanging the road, and the lingering morning mist was swiftly departing as she turned down a lane with a halfhidden entrance. In a wooden cabin by a lake, a welcome, a cup of coffee and a bacon sandwich awaited amongst the assorted fisher-folk who too had bought a ticket - and presumably a rod licence - to fish that day. After brushing the breadcrumbs from her coat, she was led to a bench by the waterside and the lesson began with tying something called a half-blood knot. Applying herself diligently, she attached the recommended ‘green montana’ to her fishing line. Pleased with her achievement, she sucked her bleeding thumb gently as she observed the next step; casting. Well, that looked easy. And then again looks can be deceptive. That thrashing thing she was doing with her rod, line and fly? - it in no way resembled that effortless thing everyone else was doing. As she, yet again, disengaged her montana from the waterside sedge (and then from her thumb), it was patiently explained that she was not a coachman, the rod not a whip, and the water not a team of reluctant horses. No, it seemed that she should move the rod firmly back and forth as if it were hands on a clockface from ten until two. Tick.Tock.To and fro. Although alien and awkward, this method improved proceedings mightily and her fly actually landed in the water more than two feet from the bank! A little more practice of letting the line out with each forward ‘tick’ and the fly was travelling farther towards the middle of the limpid pool. Pulling the line back, she varied the speed, twitching the fly as if it were a living (although floundering and hopefully soon-to-be-consumed) insect. Totally absorbing. Time ceased to have meaning and the unheeded autumnal sun reaching its zenith warmed her back, as she cast and retrieved and cast again. “No luck yet? Try a different fly – fish might fancy something else from the menu, so to speak.” The helpful advice gave her the opportunity to choose something colourful and attractive from the tin. A red, black and white striped affair with a gleam of silver tempted her. Utterly dissimilar from the little drab thing she’d snipped from her line with the titchy scissors, she attached it after a couple of attempts and a bit more thumb sucking.

A half decent cast – the furthest yet - and there was a wondrous great ripple of water as her cheery fly was snatched from beneath. The line streaked away and the reel let out a genteel scream. Suddenly, instruction was forthcoming from all quarters; “Keep your tip up and your rod’ll act like a spring.” “Keep the line tight.” “Give it line.” “Reel it in…” And she learned to give and to take, to let the fish swim and then to reel it back towards her. Slowly, slowly, she allowed the fish to tire, let it swim away less and brought it back towards her more, until she was able to use a proffered net to land it. With an audience, she dispatched the four pound trout using a weighted antler ‘priest’ and removed the fly from its mouth with forceps, thankfully no thumb sucking required. Something primeval within her stirred and her inner hunter-gatherer was elated. Much later, as dusk deepened and the air turned damp and cool with the returning mist, she sat in a deckchair, sipping hot tea, reflecting upon the day. The evening rise had yielded a three pound brown trout. She’d bake this one in the oven with butter, silky fronds of dill and slices of lemon – to be eaten with hollandaise, baby potatoes and peas, mmn… For the earlier, larger rainbow she had other designs; given the number of a local smokery, she planned to enjoy that catch for longer. It had been an exciting, extraordinary day. A day of firsts: First fish caught, something she’d dreamed about as a child – literally. In the bizarre way of dreams she’d fished at a swimming pool and caught a sturgeon. She supposed she might have been a strange kid. With her barbecued steak lunch, a first slice of giant puffball fried in olive oil. Delicious – who knew? And the most surprising first; akin to some tropical serpent, a grass snake seen swimming across the lake, lazy, sinuous. A double-take, a look around. Still England. Driving home in the dark, favouring her tender thumb, she planned a tetanus booster and added fly fishing kit to her virtual Christmas list. Along with the trout, it seemed that she too was hooked… © Lucia Foster-Found 2019 www.luciafosterfound.com

If they give you points and you reach 12 within a 3 year period you can also be disqualified as a ‘totter’. WHY THE SOUTH DOWNS IS THE PERFECT NATURAL REMEDY FOR MENTAL HEALTH The breathing space of the South Downs National Park, “forest bathing” and enjoying natural light can do wonders to boost mental health.

Here are Amanda’s five reasons why the South Downs is good for boosting mental health:

The breathing space of the South Downs National Park, “forest bathing” and enjoying natural light can do wonders to boost mental health. That’s the message from Amanda Elmes, from the South Downs National Park Authority, who is offering five reasons why the National Park is the perfect tonic for a healthy state of mind.

2. Forest bathing reduces stress The National Park is a treasure trove of woodland, such as Alice Holt, Stansted and Friston. Forest bathing simply means immersing yourself in a forest setting. Originating in Japan and now a cornerstone of Japanese healthcare, it is a natural way to calm the senses and promote a feeling of peace in a busy world.

Amanda, Learning, Outreach and Volunteer Lead, says spending just one hour a week getting out into the National Park and enjoying the amazing landscape can make a positive difference to reducing stress. “The National Park was designated for the nation for a very good reason – it’s such a special place with breathtaking landscape and wildlife,” said Amanda. “Whether it’s walking a section of the South Downs Way and soaking up the wide open views, or a family cycle ride in the woods, getting outdoors is proven to reduce stress and generally promote a feeling of happiness.

1. Going for a walk releases feel-good chemicals A walk in the countryside builds up cardiovascular fitness and releases the feel-good chemical in the brain, serotonin. If walking with your dog, be sure to keep it on a lead.

3. Getting closer to nature increases self-esteem Studies point towards spending time in a greener environment as being good for increasing self-esteem, reducing the stress hormone cortisol and reducing blood pressure. 4. Natural light is essential for healthy brain function Spending too much time indoors, away from natural light, can have a negative impact on our mental health and studies suggest it can contribute to sleep issues, poor memory and anxiety. Just 20 minutes of exposure to daylight can increase the brain’s levels of serotonin and help control our natural circadian rhythms that dictate sleep-wake cycles.

“Many people think that a visit to the National Park needs to be a dayout or involve vigorous exercise, but it could simply be an hour-long gentle walk at one of our many beauty spots.

5. Breathe in the clean fresh air! Studies indicate that reduced atmospheric pollutants can help support and maintain mental health.

“With 117,000 people living in the National Park and more than two million people living within 10km, I would urge people to make the most of this incredible natural remedy.”

“Think pink is the sole preserve of little girls’ bedrooms and Disney princesses? Well the time has come to think pink – or to rethink pink, anyway. From soft blush pastels to upbeat corals and the richer tones of raspberry, fuchsia and cerise, these versatile pinks will look great in your living room. Use the right shade and it will make any room look fresh, modern and really very grown-up.” “The modern “country way” to work this trend is to mix blossom pink with taupe, grey and earthy tones, giving it a relaxed homeliness. Avoid high-impact prints and go for softer designs, simple leafy shapes or gentle rustic block prints on curtains and wallpapers. You can add style and character to a more traditional living room with gorgeous floral print curtains and why not compliment these with a statement sofa or chair in a raspberry shade.” “For a light, spacious, contemporary feel, pale neutrals are your best friend. Give your walls a lick of rose pink paint then the add furniture, flooring and soft furnishings in a mix of plain soft pastel hues.” “If you want to go for something much bolder and exotic, why not trying spicing up your living room by teaming hot pink with vibrant orange colours. Balance large areas of intense pink with accents of zesty orange and pure white. Mix in graphic print fabrics, modern art and big tropical pot plants for added impact.” - Corinne Staples, Interior Designer at Pat Staples Interiors. GOSS & PARTNERS - ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN IN THE MEON VALLEY Goss & Partners is a design studio specialising in architectural drawings and services. Founded by Alfie Goss, an Architectural designer in Waltham Chase. The business offers services around Hampshire, including consultation, CAD drawings, and 3D Rendering & Planning services. Having been around construction since a young age, Alfie had always had a keen eye for design. Working with various practices across the south coast, Alfie began to learn and develop his skills and whilst training at university grew a strong knowledge into design and software representation. Still studying at University, Alfie is always learning new ideas and further developing his understanding of how to design and fabricate a building. Therefore, he strategized a way to use his skills in design and CAD drawing, 3D Rendering, Urban Strategy Planning & Concept Development to offer fair and flexible services, which built up the company’s portfolio and produced quality architecture for his clients. Having worked closely with a specialist timber frame building company, Goss & Partners has the ability to produce specialised timber frame designs and can integrate designs with the building company for constructional work. All of this meant that Goss & Partners could cut down on so called ‘architect fees’ meaning they could charge a fair price for their work. Cara Wassenberg from Petersfield is the winner of the Amanda Moriarty Memorial Prize 2019. “Amanda Moriarty, a long serving honorary treasurer and board member of the Contemporary Glass Society, passed away in 2017,” says CGS Chair Sue Purser Hope. “In memory of her enthusiasm and encouragement of glassmaking the society offers an annual prize.” In 2019 we have a most generous offer from renowned UK glass artist and honorary CGS member Colin Reid to give the winner two weeks’ residency in his studio as the prize. “We ended up with a shortlist of two and did Skype interviews,” says Colin. “I am delighted to offer the residency to Cara, who put forward an excellent, well thought out and presented proposal. She is a skilled metal worker and will be using the residency to make a more ambitious work with glass and metal using the facilities in my studio. I am looking forward to having her working here.” Dorset born Cara adds: “I am so thrilled to have this opportunity to work in Colin’s studio. I look forward to further the mould making process with the aim of showing a transfer of texture, movement and energy from steel into glass. It will be great to have the use of such amazing facilities and work in an international recognised studio.” CGS has an ongoing brief to help makers to develop their skills and techniques. The Amanda Moriarty Prize is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate Amanda’s creativity and help the next generation of artists. BACKGROUND ON AMANDA MORIARTY Amanda lived in London for many years, then moved to Stroud and had lived there for over 10 years. She was CGS treasurer for over 15 years a wonderful creative person and died very quickly for cancer. The CGS raises money and set up this annual prize for a member to help develop their skills. Amanda’s partner John Cooper says: "Amanda was my partner for 28 wonderful years. She was a prolific artist, born with a desire, almost a need, to create. She worked with all kinds of materials but without doubt her main love was glass. Its colour and light were a constant inspiration for her. I'm very pleased that there is a memorial prize in her name awarded by the Contemporary Glass Society and I'm sure she would be happy to think that the prize was going to help other artists expand their knowledge and experience."
