Make your OLD kitchen a NEW kitchen for a fraction of the cost of buying a new kitchen

Happy Kitchens were recommended to us by neighbours & within a few minutes of meeting Ben we knew that we wanted him & his team to work on our Kitchen. Ben visited us on 2 occasions so we could view the potential options in both daylight and also at night to ensure the colour scheme worked for us. Ben offered his expert advice without once feeling pressured and was more than happy to accommodate us when we wanted to change our mind on a few final touches. A pleasent surprise was that they fitted all our new appliances without any additional charge. The team who completed the job were a pleasure to deal with & worked exceptionally hard ensuring the kitchen was completed on schedule, the whole team treated our home with the utmost respect & we cannot be more pleased with the result.

Fiona & Jim Hawley Happy Kitchens are quite unique as we are able to offer top quality products, available in any size, fitted by the best professionals in the business. Change your kitchen and bedroom with a makeover or design and install a new kitchen and bedroom, whichever suits your needs or price range.

BRAMDEAN’S BUMPER BOOT IS BACK

Held every year for over 30 years, the popular Car Boot Sale is hosted at the home of Caroline Stanley who devised and has organised the event for over three decades. She has decided, quite rightly, to hang up her collecting bucket this year but as a former volunteer for family support charity Home-Start she is happy for the charity’s fundraising team to take over the reins. “I will of course be keeping an eagle eye on proceedings,” says Caroline “and will be popping in for a bacon butty to see how they are getting on.”

If you are feeling competitive, consider taking part in our Horticultural Show. Classes to enter include baking, photography, art, craft, wine, preserves, horticultural and flowerarranging. With a Junior section too, the whole family can take part for a chance to win a certificate or a trophy. Lastly, budding photographers can enter our Photography Competition for a chance to win a £25 voucher from a store of your choice.

Entertainment includes the Big Noise Community Samba Band, a Vintage car display, Sussex Falconry, Jennifer Parker-Lummis (Soprano singer), a dance performance by Curdridge Primary School, a display by Fair Oak Dog Agility, audience participative games

Contrary to rumours circulating around the county, the famous August Bank Holiday Monday Car Boot Sale at Brockwood Park near Bramdean is back in business.

For a chance to win one of the fantastic prizes that have been donated by local businesses and exhibitors, simply buy your ticket from the Grand-Draw stall on show-day.

Gates open at 8am on Monday 26th August and eager buyers should follow signs from the A272. Car boot entry is £10, with vans and trailer £15 and buyers are asked for a donation to the charity as they arrive. “We are so grateful to Caroline for all the work she has done for Home-Start over the years, both as a volunteer supporting struggling families and as a brilliant fundraiser,” said HomeStart Winchester Chairman Liz Cooper. “Let’s hope for good weather and lots of booters and buyers back in Brockwood on Monday August 26th.” Information: Anne Macpherson on 01962 851177, 01962 777624 or 07886 905237 or anne.macpherson@home-startwinchester.org.uk.

FIVE STARS FOR MEON VALLEY LIONS!

Our regular BBQ gig at the Wickham Charity Beer Festival proved a little more eventful than we expected, when a Food Standards Agency inspector arrived to carry out a food hygiene check. We’ve been proud to display our fivestar FSA rating for some years, but policies and practices must be regularly checked for organisations to retain the classification. Inspections of this nature are all part of the enforcement process. After an intense on-site review lasting what seemed like an eternity, we were pleased to hear that we had passed the inspection with a clean bill of health and retained our five stars. Our thanks go to Lion Roy Cuthbertson who has managed and led the catering programme for us for many years and who rightfully must take all the credit for the quality and reputation of our food-service standards. www.meonvalleylionsclub.org.uk

PROMOTION

A FIRST TIMERS GUIDE TO JAPAN WHERE TO GO First of all, as with any destination where contrasts are a key attraction, it's important to select an itinerary that allows you to explore these. For first-time visitors to Japan, a tour that incorporates the dazzling capital, Tokyo, taking in trips to Mount Fuji, Nikko and Kyoto is a good choice. This way, you'll get to experience plenty of facets of Japanese culture. The nation's capital, Tokyo is a great starting point for any tour of Japan - it's a unique experience. Seeing the sea of

people rushing across the famous Ginza intersection, being squeezed into a metro train and going to one of the local karaoke bars is all part of a classic Tokyo visit. From Tokyo, there are many amazing day trips. One is to Nikko, the most famous attraction of which is its line of Jizo Buddhas, so old that they're covered in moss. You can also go to Mount Fuji, which is one of the country's most iconic sites. This active volcano is absolutely beautiful and easily admired from ground level, but if you're an active person you might prefer to make the trip to the summit. When it is time to leave Tokyo there is only one way to go, by bullet train. A Symbol of everything that is modern day Japan taking a ride on the Bullet train has to be done, and where better to head for than Kyoto a city that really contrasts with Tokyo. Indeed, this ancient city is full of historic buildings and ageold ritual. Home to an incredibly impressive 17 UNESCO World Heritage sites, it was actually once the nation's capital - a title it held for over 1,000 years. Plus, there are more than 2,000 Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines to discover here too.

PROMOTION ONSEN It is important to get some rest and relaxation while on holiday and for this many people think of the beach, but in Japan they have Onsen. These natural hot springs provide the perfect place to rest and relax after a few days in the city or trekking in national parks. Onsen can be found in various locations across the country, but the oldest is thought to be the Yunomine Onsen. Here the water is said to change colour seven times a day and purification rituals are undertaken in the mineral-rich pools. CASTLES Japan is a land of castles, with many fine specimens to be explored. Each one has its own distinct character and claim to fame. These include Himeji Castle, which was constructed in the 17th century and is instantly recognisable by its impressive white walls. In contrast, Matsumoto Castle is entirely black and has therefore been nicknamed the Crow Castle. It is where the oldest keep in the whole country can be found. Alternatively, visit Okinawa Island where Shuri Castle Park is situated. Here you will find ruins associated with the Ryukyuan culture, which thrived in the region between the 12th and the 17th centuries.

FESTIVALS There are a wide selection of festivals held in Japan every year and planning a trip to coincide with one of these will make for a truly memorable experience. One of the nicest things about a number of these occasions is that they celebrate natural phenomena. Take the Cherry Blossom Festival, for example, which recognises how beautiful the landscape becomes when it is covered in light pink flowers. Others include the snow and ice festivals held in Sapporo to the north of the country, where the air is cooler. SLURP YOUR NOODLES And finally, don’t be afraid to slurp your noodles. Dishes like ramen are virtually impossible to eat without at least a bit of slurping, and this is expected - in fact, it's considered polite, because it shows that you're enjoying your food!

This year’s West Meon Music is delighted to welcome actor Peter Bowles, who will be the narrator in a rare performance of Richard Strauss’ “Enoch Arden” – a dramatic setting of Tennyson’s 1897 poem. The festival opens on Friday 13 September with a candlelit concert of classical favourites performed by various members of the Primrose Piano Quartet, who founded the event in 2011. The evening includes Beethoven’s renowned “Kreutzer” Sonata for violin and piano and piano trios by Brahms and Schubert. Booking for the festival – now in its ninth year – opens on 1 June with an exciting line-up of great chamber music, masterclasses with talented young musicians, a recital by an award winning young harpist and that evening of “Music and Melodrama” with Peter Bowles – regularly performing on the West End stage but perhaps still remembered by many for his television roles in “The Irish RM” and “To the Manor Born”. Saturday morning is devoted to masterclasses for local young musicians (free entry for the audience), with “Rising Star” harpist Gabriella Jones performing at nearby East Meon church in the afternoon, before Saturday evening’s “Music and Melodrama” when Peter Bowles and the quartet’s pianist, John Thwaites, will be discussing the work and other musical dramas in a pre-concert talk. Sunday’s musical treats start with a “coffee concert” in the morning which include Rebecca Clarke’s famed Viola Sonata – often described as a jewel in the instrument’s repertoire; followed by a lunchtime showing of the classic Enoch Arden film from 1911, and the afternoon’s “Festival Finale” ends with Brahms’ Piano Quintet Op.34 – generally regarded as "the crown of his chamber music” – when the Primrose will be joined by Jenny Sacha, best known as the first violin of the highly regarded Pavão Quartet. As in previous years the festival will also be raising funds for the Petersfield-based Rosemary Foundation which provides a hospice at home service throughout the surrounding areas. Ticket prices for the festival are from £12 to £25 with generous discounts for students, accompanied children and festival passes. Full details can be found at www.westmeonmusic.co.uk

ROBIN SHEPHERD AND BARRY NICHOLSON OF THE BISHOP’S WALTHAM TOWN TEAM PRESENTING £350 TO VIRGINIA LOVELL AND DAVID WILLIAMSON OF MEON VALLEY HEARTSTART.

BISHOP’S WALTHAM BITES PROCEEDS TO HELP SAVE LIVES The Meon Valley Heartstart recently received a boost when it was presented with a cheque for £360 from the Bishop’s Waltham Town Team. The money was raised by Bishop’s Waltham Town Team from the ticket sales for April’s highly successful Bishop’s Waltham Bites Event. Meon Valley Heartstart (www. heartstartmeonvalley.co.uk) is a community organisation set up in 2001 to help save lives

ON YOUR BIKE BRITAIN! FIGURES REVEAL FEW ADULTS CYCLE TO WORK

Despite the government pouring £1.2 billion into cycling, new research has revealed that it is still only a slim few who are cycling to work, with many citing nervousness about cycling in traffic as the reason. A survey of more than 7,600 UK adults published by Decathlon in the Decathlon Activity Index 2018, shows that only 7% of the nation is commuting to work with a bike. Despite cities including Manchester, Cambridge and London having made drastic changes to accommodate cycling, more than

by training people in emergency life saving skills. These are the actions needed to keep someone alive and safe until professional help arrives. It offers its training sessions to the general public, to community groups and to schools – all free of charge. It is a service that has no paid staff and is completely run by volunteers. Last year over 4,000 people were trained by this small voluntary group. Meon Valley Heartstart Chairperson, Virginia Lovell said “We are very grateful for this donation from the Bishop’s Waltham Town Team. We are wholly dependent on donations to keep our service running and to continue to help save lives in the Meon Valley area”. 1 in 4 (26%) still feel it is too dangerous to do so. This was followed by 21% who said they are still too scared to cycle the roads to work. Philippe Rebelo, UK marketing director at Decathlon commented: “It is clear to see that not many of us actually choose to commute to our workplace with a bicycle. This is despite the Government increasing the spend on cycling, with improvements for cycle to work schemes and even overhauls of roads in cities to accommodate cyclists.” Meanwhile, 21% also said that the distance to their place of work is too far to travel via bike. 17% admitted they don’t even own a bike, even though cycle to work schemes are making this more viable for commuters, with 183,423 employees picking up this scheme in 2014. A further 1 in 7 confessed that they actually don’t like cycling which explains why they currently can’t commute to work with a bicycle. The Decathlon Activity Index tracks rates of participation in sport and other physical activities across the year through a monthly, national survey. For more information, visit www.decathlon.co.uk

Robin Shepherd, Town Team Chairman, along with Giorgio’s Proprietor, and Chairman of the Bishop’s Waltham Chamber of Trade, Barry Nicholson presented the cheque outside Giorgio’s Restaurant on Monday evening. Robin said “We are really pleased to be able to pass on some of the proceeds from Bishop’s Waltham Bites to such a deserving organisation. On behalf of the Town Team itself and the eight participating outlets, it is great to know that the funds we raised will be able to help Heartstart provide its much needed service.” The Bishop’s Waltham Town Team is a partnership organisation which exists to sustain and future-proof the Bishop’s Waltham Town Centre by developing new markets and uses for it. It promotes and stimulates the town centre’s role as a commercial and social meeting place for all the people in our community and from the villages nearby. The Town Team launched Bishop’s Waltham Bites in October 2016 as an opportunity for ticket holders to sample tasters of what the town’s restaurants, pubs and food outlets have to offer. Since then it has become a very popular event in the town’s calendar with tickets always in high demand. The next Bishop’s Waltham Bites event will be held on Saturday 5th October with tickets going on sale about 3 weeks in advance.

Dozens of classic and interesting sports cars will be on display at the countryside garage, including a rare 1972 Lamborghini Muira SV, a 1967 275 GTB/4 Ferrari, a De Lorean, a 1966 Mustang, a 1943 Dodge Truck, a 1936 Austin 10 Ripley and a V10 Audi R8 Spyder to name just a few.

It will pick up from the following stops: Stockbridge (The White Hart) 3.30pm,Wherwell (The White Lion) 3.40pm, Chilbolton (The Abbotts Mitre) 3.50pm, Barton Stacey (The Swan Inn) 4.10pm, Sutton Scotney (The Wonston Arms) 4.20pm. Return buses will leave Auto Fest at 9.30pm and 11pm.

Partygoers can sink their teeth into a barbecue and hog roast provided by Broughton Water Buffalo’s Hogget & Boar, while Tipsy Goose Hampshire will be dispensing local beer, gin and Pimms. A French sommelier will be giving free tastings of some of Burgundy’s fine wines and artisan cheeses. All profits from the party will be donated to Naomi House and Jacksplace, the children’s hospice based in the nearby village of Sutton Scotney. “The Winchester Auto Barn's been going for nearly a year now and we've got a lot to celebrate,” said garage owner, Niall Holden. "People coming to our monthly Breakfast Club meetings have asked for a party - so we're throwing one! We want to attract local families as well as petrol heads up to the garage for a fun afternoon out whilst at the same time raising funds for a really important local charity."

Tickets, priced at £10, can be bought from Winchester Auto Barn or by logging on to winchesterautobarn.com. Children under 16 go free. Anyone wishing to display their classic car can do so by emailing autofest@winchesterautobarn.com. Winchester Auto Barn holds regular classic car breakfast meetings and also offers MOTs and servicing at competitive rates for all types of modern and classic vehicles.

GARDEN FEATURE

THE ECO WORRIER “Y ou shouldn’t leave your engine running – it’s bad for the environment.” A silver-haired, diminutive woman thrust her face closer and cocked her head towards the parked car.

True enough, her car was still burbling away. Between the radio’s jolly offering and the fan heater blasting warmth over her chilly passenger, she’d not noticed the engine noise when she hopped out and run into the shop to buy a paper. The car usually switched itself off as soon as she put it into neutral and took her foot off the clutch. Somewhat wrong-footed, she struggled to explain the failure of her vehicle’s environmentally friendly (if occasionally irritating) feature to the elderly lady currently fixing her with a dubious eye. There was probably some techno-reason why the car hadn’t done its eco-thing, but the accusation of being less than environmentally friendly made her review her own planet-saving impact. For one, she assiduously went through her rubbish to separate out the recyclables to be deposited in the brown bin, trooping to the bottle bank with her washed glassware too.

When she remembered, which was most of the time, she shopped using her own bags ‘for life’. Although she anti-bac-ed them regularly as she’d read somewhere they could harbour deadly bacteria and, really, bags ‘for death’ didn’t have quite the same jaunty ring.. Deliberately not buying cheap, virtually disposable clothing, she preferred to spend her money in charity shops and car boot sales when her

wardrobe needed a makeover; surely something of a win-win for everyone? But truthfully, as just a well-meaning, ordinary human, she found trying to be less of a blight on Mother Earth something of a minefield. Here’s one - Old Car versus New Car. An ‘Old Car’ might not be so clean to run, but scrapping it or trading it in for a ‘New Car’ that used goodness only knows how much energy and raw materials to manufacture. Which car takes the chequered eco-friendly flag? And here’s another - plastic bags versus paper ones. Did she read somewhere that one supermarket was going to offer paper grocery bags? But didn’t she also read that the production and transportation of paper bags contributes more to global warming than plastic ones? Where had she seen that – and was it true? Reaching for her ‘phone she jabbed and scrolled feverishly, searching. And if some plastic bags were bio-degradable, she wondered, why weren’t they all? Surely then there’d be a chance they’d naturally disintegrate before reaching the oceans where turtles and whales could eat them. Then there was palm oil. A viral advert last Christmas rather poignantly highlighted the deforestation caused by palm oil plantations. That supermarket had vowed to ban palm oil from their own brand and she’d vowed to shop there as a consequence. Now she was disappointed in herself that she hadn’t done it more often. And what about her beloved wood burner? Was she harbouring a soon-to-be-banned polluting monster in her sitting room? If a betting person, she’d have put good money on it being healthier for our planet than burning oil or gas forcibly extracted from the depths of the earth and transported hundreds, if not thousands of miles. Ditto electric heating. Wasn’t most electricity made by some process that involved… burning fossil fuels or using nuclear power with its accompanying toxic waste? And where did this leave the debate on electric cars? They might be clean to run, but the power to charge them up had to come from somewhere, didn’t it? She was no eco warrior – just concerned about doing the right thing. Wouldn’t it be great if she didn’t have to worry so much about her choices? What if only the right choices were available? Like her car. It made the right decision when it switched itself off – at least it did most of the time. She hoped it was the right decision anyway. As she didn’t actually sit stationary in traffic for long periods, she sometimes wondered if all this repeated re-starting didn’t in fact burn MORE fuel and release MORE pollutants into the atmosphere. Should look that up, along with every other thing she wasn’t sure about. AAAGGHHHH… the list was endless and it was, to coin a phrase, doin’ her head in. Neither a ‘chuck-it-all-in-the-same-bin’ barbarian, nor a ‘go-plasticfree’ paragon, it dawned on her she was that middle-ground creature someone who does a bit to save the planet, whilst fretting a lot about the state of the planet. She’d become an Eco-Worrier. And worrying, as everyone knew, was pointless, achieved nothing – she needed to know more, do more, try harder. And that feisty lady in the shop was quite right. She really shouldn’t have left her engine running… © Lucia Foster-Found 2019 www.luciafosterfound.com

EAST MEON GARDEN CLUBVISIT TO RYMANS GARDENS, APULDRAM, NR CHICHESTER ON THURSDAY 30TH MAY 2019

Ryman who was a prominent merchant and lawyer. The building has an interesting association with the Bell Tower of Chichester Cathedral which is known as ‘Ryman’s Tower’. They are both constructed from stone from the quarries in Bembridge and Ventnor on the Isle of Wight.

Pittosporum was used as an edging plant and trimmed to around 2 ft.We admired a 400 year old evergreen, multi-stemmed oak with a 20 ft circumference. Unfortunately, it doesn’t qualify for the record as it is not a single stem tree. The record for this goes to an oak with a circumference 12 ft.

The house which is an English Heritage Grade 1 listed property is not open to the Public and when the present owner moved in, in 1996, she set about completely renovating the extremely run-down House and also clearing the large overgrown four and a half acre gardens.

Henry IV (also known as Henry Bolingbroke) was on the throne at the time and he gave permission for William Ryman to build the house. William Ryman became a Knight of the Shire (Sussex) in 1420 and High Sheriff of Sussex in 1434.

We looked at the old pump outside the original kitchen dating back to 1798. We marvelled at the very impressive avenue of Poplar trees and listened to their ‘whispering’ leaves . We learned that the wood from Poplar trees makes the finest kindling and the wood from the Foxglove Tree is used to make cigar boxes!

To the front of the house are The Tudor Gardens with Box parterres which surround masses of sweet smelling lavender. Head Gardener, Jamie advised that the best time to prune Box is on Derby Day when frosts are over and there is no harsh sunshine.

Having admired The Tudor Gardens we walked down some steps through high hedges to a lovely secluded garden with ponds surrounded by a clever mix of shrubs and perennials.

We gazed at the magnificent medieval Tower House which was built in 1410 by William

BISHOPS WALTHAM GARDENING CLUB JULY NEWS

One of the Club’s highlights is always our Open Annual Show. The fact that we are now on number 63, proves that it’s a popular event and of interest to many sections of society. You don’t have to be a gardener, either. Maybe you make a delicious cake or a sugar decoration. Perhaps you love flower arranging or maybe make delicious jam! How about getting the kids to make something? Pick up your Brochure (including entry form) and see just how many classes there are. For the competition, Members’ entries are free, as are children’s, and we ask a nominal 20p per entry for non-members. Don’t forget the date, it’s SATURDAY 20th JULY,The Jubilee Hall, Little Shore Lane SO32

One very showy shrub was a large leaved, silver Pittosporum, quite unlike what we have become used to seeing. Interestingly the dwarf version of the bi-coloured 1ED. Open to the Public at 1.45p.m. Kids are free, and it’s just £1 for adults. If you haven’t entered before, it’s the fun of it, winning doesn’t matter -though we all do our best in the hope of scooping a prize) and to see your entry on the show bench gives you quite a boost! For Members of the Gardening Club entries are free, but it’s only 20p per item. Parking is free, also.

We ended our tour by walking along the herbaceous borders with their everlasting wallflowers, giant scabious, which were attracting a mass of bees, flame coloured Geum, sweet smelling roses, and the old faithfuls, purple/blue bearded Iris and ‘Johnson’s Blue geraniums. We all agreed that Jamie Clarke was an excellent guide, extremely knowledgeable and with a clear love for the garden which is an ever evolving journey for him and the owners of Rymans. D-DAY MEMORIAL HALL REOPENED IN TIME TO COMMEMORATE 75-YEAR LANDMARK

ASIAN ARTS, FINE ARTS, ANTIQUES, DECORATIVE INTERIORS & COLLECTABLES Tuesday 9th July

A D-Day memorial hall in the Winchester district has reopened following a revamp to modernise the facility. The memorial hall in Priory Road, Southwick, benefited from £72,000 of Winchester City Council’s Fieldfare Leader Local Action Group funding. This meant the kitchen could be replaced, and the air conditioning and roof of the building have also been updated which has improved the eco-efficiency of the building. The building is now fully ready for the 75th anniversary of D-Day this week. In Southwick on June 8 and 9 the entire village reverted to the 1940s to provide a nostalgic experience for residents and visitors, and the hall itself was transformed into a vintage tea room. Cabinet member for economy, Cllr Anne Weir, said: “This is a fantastic use of LEADER funding, which not only ensures that this much-loved building is open in time to commemorate D-Day this week, but that the funding will also provide a long-term environmental benefit to the memorial hall.” www.winchester.gov.uk

Market goers were able to sample and buy produce including wasabi, watercress, wine, trout, cheese, gin, biltong, oils and fish cakes. Nancy Judge, PR Officer at Hampshire Fare commented on the event: “Hampshire has definitely been the buzz word here at Borough Market. It has been brilliant to talk to food lovers from all over the world about the quality of Hampshire produce. People have gone away understanding that we make award-winning wines, that we are home to beautiful chalk streams, that watercress is a versatile superfood,

Converting biltong savvy South Africans in to trying and then buying our award-winning biltong was just one of the highlights!” Hampshire ingredients were showcased in the demo kitchen with delicious recipes cooked up by Borough Market’s consultant chef Hayden Groves and James Harper from The Watercress Company. RETAIL COMMUNITY no exception. Youth Chair Mandy Tourle and Youth Deputy Stephanie Kelsey had the honour of presenting Jo Pike and her team with a cheque for £400. The money is planned to be used to hire inflatables and games for the event to ensure everyone has a great time. The Young Carer’s weekend provides necessary services to these young careers: allowing them a chance to mix with children of their own age, have some carefree fun and have a respite from caring for a family member.

BISHOP’S WALTHAM ROTARY CARNIVAL UPDATE 2019

Gill has had her for around 20 months and has worked hard in getting Coco socialised and now she has come on so well that she has become a “Pets as Therapy” dog visiting hospitals and Old People’s homes.

By the time you read this the ‘Carnival will be over’ for another year. Please let us know what you enjoyed best and worst at m.tourle@ bishopswalthamrotary.org.uk The Carnival was again a great success, despite the weather. The Batala drum band woke the town up at around 11.30.The classic cars and motor bikes came through the town, followed by the Procession of Scouts,Youth Club, Junior and Infant schools,Town Team, Dynamos and Fire Engine. Sadly, the Fullers Dray, which is provided each year by Fullers, broke down in the High Street and delayed the Procession a little. We owe so much to the local traders who have put themselves out for us, repeatedly providing support and donations to the Carnival cause: thank you. Prizes were awarded to the Scouts for their Procession entry of Apollo 11, and runners up, the Youth club, for their portrayal of the Sixties. WINCHESTER HAT FAIR CELEBRATES 45 YEARS!

PHOTO BY ADRIENNE PHOTOGRAPHY (QUATUOR STOMP AT HAT FAIR 2017)

This year’s Hat Fair, the UK’s longest continually running Outdoor Arts Festival, takes place in Winchester from Friday 5 July to Sunday 7 July 2019. Celebrating 45 years this year and taking its name from its busking heritage, the free three-day festival brings the very best in international street performance,

Ovacome is a national UK ovarian cancer charity, focused on providing support to anyone affected by Ovarian cancer. Roger Clark has sadly been affected by the death of his daughter and supports this cause. He has made a study of the Emperor Penguin following his daughter’s death and presented pictures of it in its habitat to the club during May.The club presented a cheque to Roger for the Ovacome charity. Ovacome at Work is an awareness initiative for employers who want to educate their staff about the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer, as part of their health and wellbeing programme. AMBLE ON THE HAMBLE Rotarian Bob Glibbery organised an amble on the Hamble, with lunch, for a group of BW club members in May. Not all work; some play!

A very big congratulations from all of us at The Forum to Luvvit, who was awarded the well deserved best shop display. THIRTY YEAR ANNIVERSARY The club celebrated its 30th anniversary earlier this year. John Natt, this year’s Club President, presented thirty year, long-service awards to Nigel Barnfield, Rick Castle, Bob Davies, Anthony Gibson and Roy Kimble. FAIRTHORNE MANOR YOUNG CARERS Bishop’s Waltham Rotary Club is always keen to support worthwhile causes in the area and Fairthorne Manor’s Young Carers weekend is theatre, dance and circus-inspired events to the city. Hat Fair will run throughout the city centre on Friday and Saturday with Sunday’s festivities taking place at the North Walls Recreation Ground, a short walk from the High Street. The festival kicks off in style at noon on Friday 5 July as hundreds of school children parade through the streets in the Hat Fair Carnival, so come along to join in the fun! Local acts will pop up throughout the city centre on Saturday and will take to the People’s Stage at the North Walls Recreation Ground on Sunday. Performing companies from the University of Winchester will battle it out in the Top Hat Competition to win mentoring with Andrew Loretto, Hat Fair Director, and a prized slot in the programme of Hat Fair 2020. Last year’s

CARNIVAL RAFFLE As ever, there was a raffle at the Carnival and the prizes have been very generously donated by local traders: too many to mention here individually. But, there is a £100 first prize, and numerous meals vouchers, hampers and other great prizes. Featured here are pictures of BW Rotarians selling raffle tickets in Bishop’s Waltham. As you can see above, your local Rotary club engages in a wide range of support of local and international causes as well as fellowship. For more information: Mike Berry at mike.berry@ bishopswalthamrotary.org.uk winner Martin Jakeman will be performing this year – so keep an eye out for him. The lawns of St Johns Almshouses will provide an oasis, where festival-goers can enjoy free cups of tea and cake whilst enjoying acts in a calmer environment. Hat Fair is the UK’s longest running festival of outdoor arts. Founded in 1974 by Jonathan Kay, Hat Fair inspires and is inspired by the people, heritage and public spaces within the city of Winchester. Their aim is to shine a light on the city, transforming the everyday into the extraordinary. The festival takes place every year during the first weekend of July across the historic city of Winchester. There’s something for everyone to enjoy at each year’s festival, and best of all, it’s absolutely free to attend! For more information: hatfair.co.uk

NATIONAL PARK AUTHORITY TAKES DIRECT ACTION TO REMOVE CARAVANS UNLAWFULLY SITED IN OPEN COUNTRYSIDE

Enforcement action has been carried out to remove two residential caravans that were unlawfully sited on an agricultural field in the South Downs National Park at Soberton, Hampshire. In a joint exercise between the South Downs National Park Authority and Winchester City Council, a specialist contractor was appointed to carry out direct action to remove the caravans and other domestic paraphernalia such as scrap vehicles, gas bottles and rubble. The plot, off Long Road, near Winchester, contained one static and one touring caravan, contrary to the land’s lawful planning use for agricultural purposes. Fencing had also been illegally erected – in breach of a restriction agreed by the Secretary of State in 2004 which prevents erection of fencing around plots.

It comes after an enforcement notice was served in November last year by the South Downs National Park Authority. The notice required the owners to:

SOUTHAMPTON AIRPORT IS LOOKING FOR AIRCRAFT OF THE FUTURE

Cease use of the land as a residential caravan site. Remove from the land all caravans/mobile homes, vehicles not required for the purposes of agriculture on the land and all other residential and domestic paraphernalia including gas bottles.

Southampton Airport (SOU) has launched a competition calling on local schools to design the aircraft of the future. Students are encouraged to use their imagination and sketch an aircraft that would one day roam the skies, with the best design being 3D printed at the airport.

Remove fencing and the resulting materials from the land. Return the land to its previous condition and appearance as agricultural land and seeded to grass after compliance with steps 1 to 3. After none of these steps were taken, a letter was hand delivered to the occupiers on 18 April 2019 giving notice that direct action was being considered and inviting the occupiers to comply with the notice. The enforcement notice set out the planning harm, including its prominent and conspicuous location in the National Park, breach of the Secretary of State-endorsed restriction, breach of the Winchester District Local Plan Joint Core Strategy and the emerging SDNPA Local Plan. The development also contravened the statutory purposes of the National Park to conserve and enhance the natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage of the area. Due to non-compliance with any of the steps, enforcement action took place over 4th and 5th of June. www.southdowns.gov.uk

The competition will form a part of the “Spirit of SOU” event that will celebrate the past and the future of Southampton Airport during the week of 8 July. The event will be packed with engaging activities throughout the whole week, from a Spitfire flight and airport exhibition to a flight simulator and choir performance. Neil Garwood, Managing Director of Southampton Airport, said: “We are always on the lookout for innovative ideas, and it felt like a perfect match to get students involved in shaping the future of the aviation industry. We are looking forward to seeing all the interesting designs, that hopefully one day will fly out of our airport.” Students wishing to participate should send their designs to SOUmediacentre@ southamptonairport.com no later than 1 July. The winner will be invited to the airport to open up the event and presented with the model of the drawing, 3D-printed at Southampton Airport, as well as other fantastic prizes.

As of August 2018, there were more than 1600 types of cryptocurrency, with Bitcoin being the largest. Cryptocurrency is made up of a bundle of rights, therefore is cryptocurrency actually property you own? HMRC published guidance in December stating that cryptocurrency is included when calculating your inheritance tax bill. You can be taxed on cryptocurrency but when it comes to your beneficiaries actually claiming that cryptocurrency there are logistical and legal issues to be taken into account. What jurisdiction is the cryptocurrency located in and therefore which laws govern its succession? INCLUDING DIGITAL ASSETS IN YOUR WILL More and more 65+ year olds in the UK are now online The way we handle our data is changing. Bank branches are closing, online savings accounts are increasing in popularity, CD collections are being discarded in favour of online music libraries, films are being watched on Netflix or Amazon and Paypal balances are increasing with more people using Paypal as a source of storing funds online for internet purchases. New research suggests Britons are amassing a £2.3 billion digital inheritance and so the question arises about what happens to our beloved gadgets, phones, social websites, photos, books and music once we die? With online gift vouchers being purchased at an astonishing rate, it is important to be aware that funds in

LET’S TALK LONELINESS – FIVE WAYS SOUTH DOWNS NATIONAL PARK CAN HELP Feeling lonely or isolated can affect anyone, at any age. For decades there’s been a stigma attached to this basic human emotion, but the tide seems to be turning with people now talking far more openly about their mental health and well-being.The statistics are an eyeopener. There are 1.2 million chronically lonely older people in the UK and the number of over-50s experiencing loneliness is set to reach two million by 2025/6 (both Age UK studies). And it’s not just older people. A study by The Co-op and the British Red Cross revealed over 9 million people in the UK across all adult ages – more than the population of London – are either always or often lonely. Some studies even suggest that loneliness is worse for your health than obesity.

online accounts such as internet banks, Paypal, gambling accounts, music, books, lottery accounts and photos may be lost when the owner dies. A poll of 2000 adults found 25% had more than £200 worth of films, video and music stored online.

Whilst there are many unanswered questions, what is clear is that when planning for the future, it is important to consider how your online assets will be treated and accessed should you pass away or lose mental capacity.

One of the roles of an Executor is to identify the assets and liabilities of an estate. What happens when the deceased only kept online accounts and statements? Increasingly people now decline paper statements in favour of online versions – how would the Executor find this information? One option is a cloud storage area where online digital inheritance arrangements can be documented; a person can have password restricted access to their own unique area which they could use a secure list of their digital assets. The Executors are then left the access code to

van appears at the junction, he reaches out across the roaring motorway to the van that carries the men who wronged him. Creating a vast magical motorway traffic jam he wrecks the limo and his enemies are stranded in his motorway services. They find themselves lost on a fantastical island where nothing is as it seems. Director Daniel Fox, who previously directed Romeo & Juliet at the Great Barn in 2017 said, “The Tempest is one of my favourite Shakespeare plays due to the range of characters, the mystical elements it contains – and because it is quite different from his other works.”

Titchfield Festival Theatre’s Bard at the Barn season continues with Shakespeare’s classic The Tempest. Shakespeare’s comedy tells a story involving a major act of betrayal, ill treatment, the development of magic arts and a plot of revenge. This year’s production of The Tempest is however set in an unusual location – a motorway service station. Robbed of his position, power and wealth, his enemies have left him in isolation. But this is no ordinary man, and this no ordinary island. It's a motorway services. Prospero is a magician, able to control the very elements and bend nature to his will. When a camper

Based on William Shakespeare’s The Tempest – which is also performed at The Great Barn this summer as part of the Bard at the Barn season – the show draws inspiration from the wonderfully iconic B-movie Forbidden Planet and Lost in Space, providing a real feast for fans of the 1950s and 60s classics. Return to the Forbidden Planet promises a joyous romp through many jukebox songs and toe tapping rock and roll music of the period, guaranteeing that Captain Tempest and his crew will provide an evening of serious fun and laughter for all the family. Artistic Director of Titchfield Festival Theatre, Kevin Fraser says, “Return to the Forbidden Planet is a brilliant show, a musical based around Shakespeare’s The Tempest and containing plenty of really corny lines lifted from the great Bard’s work, put into another context. We decided this year to perform both productions for our summer season; The Tempest at The Great Barn and Return to the Forbidden Planet here at the main theatre in St Margaret’s Lane. “All the actors of course will be in full 50s

This year we plan to explore the central area of the Temple site.We shall also extend current excavations to the west and the north of bath house. SOUTH DOWNS RAMBLER BUS 2019 Returning for its second season, the South Downs Rambler bus will again operate on Sundays (plus Bank Holiday Monday) between 7 July and 8 September. The bus operates between Winchester railway station and Petersfield railway station via a number of beauty spots not normally served by buses.Walkers and ramblers can use the South Downs Rambler bus as part of their day out. Everyone is welcome to take the chance to visit

FUNDRAISER COOKS UP A STORM FOR CHILDREN’S CHARITY

some lovely villages and country pubs along the way, or simply enjoy the relaxing ride through the stunning South Downs scenery and then explore either Winchester or Petersfield. The bus is jointly organised by the Three Rivers, and the East Hampshire, Community Rail Partnerships, with financial support from Cross Country Trains. Bluestar buses are the bus operator of the South Downs Rambler, and all the usual passes are accepted. Contactless payment is available on the bus, making things nice and easy for passengers buying their tickets on the bus. Richard Vassallo, Owner of Symes Interiors said: “I learned about the charity at a Business Networking International meeting and after doing some research, it seemed like a more than worthy charity to support. Being a dad of two young girls, you cannot even imagine the heartache that the parents of children suffering from the disease are going through. No one wants to see their kids ill with a cold, let alone something as horrible as Duchenne. “Our cooking school led by Becca Hoddinott of The Natural Cook Company organised everything from our end and it was a great success. The families made vegetable frittatas and cheesy sourdough bread and then the children made and decorated their own shortcakes.” Prizes were given to the best Mini Bakers and there were even Symes Joiners who worked with worked with the families to make their own tool box.

A fundraising brunch at Alton’s Symes Interiors has raised more than £300 for a good cause. 50 members of the local community took part in the event (2nd June) which saw them get together to cook a brunch meal as a family and then get to devour the results of their efforts! Each family paid £25 to attend the morning which went towards the charity’s work. Harrison’s Fund was set up in 2012 and funds research into Duchenne - a rare genetic condition which affects all the muscles in the body, causing them to waste away. Harrison’s Fund’s goal is to get as much money as possible into the hands of the world’s best researchers, who are working to find a cure for Duchenne. The charity is currently funding 16 research projects in the US and the UK.

All the proceeds from Harrison’s Brunch will go directly into the hands of scientists to fund the purchase of a “high throughput analyser” which enables scientists to compare different gene medicines when working in a lab. By using computer automation, the analyser can screen different models and evaluate them in a fraction of the time it would take a team of scientists. Luci Roberts, campaigns executive at Harrison’s Fund said: “This is the first official brunch of our campaign and we couldn’t be happier with how it all went. Everyone had a really great time and it was wonderful to see families together, enjoying cooking up a storm for a good cause.” To host your own brunch please visit www.harrisonsfund.com
