ALRESFORD SHOW
TICHBORNE PARK, ALRESFORD
A
lifetime of visiting the Alresford Agricultural Show has taught me that there are two ways to enjoy a day out at Hampshire’s – and possibly England’s – finest farming show. The first is to enjoy an all action day: turn up at the stunning Tichborne Park on the first Saturday in September and go flat out, hell-for-leather, and do as much as you can. Enjoy a session on the climbing wall, get stuck into the circus workshop (with fire show!), cuddle a beagle, and cheer on the Donkey Derby and the Pony Club relays. You can eat and drink your way round the many refreshment stands – perfect for a refuel before you head out for a boogie to the music, brought to you this year once again by the superb Alresford Uke Jam and the Thomas Lord Old Gits (who have solemnly promised to keep the noise down this year). And when (and ONLY when) your food has gone down a bit, round things off with a turn on the bungee trampoline, and then treat yourself to a 99 flake on the way out. The second way to enjoy the Show is more sedate: yes, you arrive early at Tichborne Park, but you stroll in a more leisurely fashion round the ground. You drop in on a stand, shake a few hands, have a cup of something, exchange a
friendly insult or two (or ten), and move on to the next one, shaking more hands on the way. Drool over the farm machinery that the dealers have brought – at huge effort and expense - from far and wide. Enjoy the fantastic range of farm produce on show: the livestock (both mundane and exotic), and the arable produce. There’s food and drink to suit a slow day, too, with cheeses, honey, breads and charcuteries, and a huge range of wines and exotic spirits to match. Never forget the inner peace to be found during a session in the horticultural tent, or from maxing your credit card in the craft marquee. Oh, and even a slow day deserves a 99 flake on the way home. Do it either way – it’s up to you. But make sure you’re here to join us farmers as we welcome you all into our world on September 7th at Tichborne Park. We might join you for a boogie or an ice cream – but we'll give the bungee trampoline a miss, if that’s OK with you. Tickets available on-line, www.alresfordshow.co.uk, or from Six West, Alresford, Mole Country Stores, Winchester Ticket Prices: Adults £15, Senior £13, Children 11-16 £5. Buy before 31st August and save £2 per ticket.

Winchester Heritage Open Days 2019 13th to 22nd September
T
hree cheers! Winchester Heritage Open Days are back and are even longer and stronger than before with a bumper packed programme of interesting, exciting and stimulating events to look forward to.
With more than 140 events to choose from, the festival provides a wonderful day out for the whole family and every event is completely FREE! Some you can just turn up to, but others need to be booked in advance. Not surprisingly, tickets are in high demand for special one-off events and the muchcoveted behind-the scenes tours of buildings not normally open to the public. Do visit our website now and book early to avoid disappointment. This year is also Heritage Open Days’ 25th Anniversary and there is much to celebrate. Look out for events on Keats200 remembering the poet’s visit to Winchester, People Power, the First 100 Years of Women in Law, the centenary of Women’s Engineering Society and a Food & Drink theme too. With plenty of activities for children and families, performances, exhibitions, activities, talks and tours, you are bound to find something to appeal to you and your family. Why not invite friends who are not lucky enough to live in Hampshire to come and join in the fun? The festival is organised and run entirely by a small group of enthusiastic volunteers who all give up their time for free. We are grateful to them and to the many businesses, organisations and individuals for their goodwill and generosity, particularly our lead sponsor, Winchester College for its ongoing support and for opening its doors to so many wonderful events this year. The festival’s future, however, depends on being able to meet its running costs. We are delighted to announce that Professor Martin Biddle will host our special fundraising event on the eve of the festival with a talk Why did the Anglo-Saxons build a church in the middle of a ruined Roman City? We do hope you will be able to join us and show your support.

NEW ENGLAND SELF-DRIVE T he landing site of the Pilgrims and central to the American Revolution, New England is rich in history as well as the beautiful scenery that draws so many visitors in every year, especially in the Autumn months.
Driving is an easy way of getting around and it gives you the opportunity to appreciate the different personalities of New England’s states. Whilst Vermont boasts white clapboard churches and red-barn dairy farms, you will find that New Hampshire has much of the stunning scenery including The White Mountains National Forest, whilst Maine can lay claim to some of the most rugged and spectacular coastline. The more southerly state of Boston is very much part of the 21st century with Boston at its heart and Rhode Island offers a much more laid-back feel where life is taken at a much slower pace. Whilst at Amity Travel, we always recommend early booking to help with planning, it is never too late to arrange a holiday to New England with its plentiful supply of accommodation, so if you are looking for somewhere to go this Autumn, why not give New England a go. To whet your appetite, we have put together a typical driving holiday of the region
DAY 1 Arrive Boston and take a transfer to your city hotel for a 2 night stay. Use the rest of the day to start exploring this charming city. DAY 2 Boston is one of the oldest cities in the USA and steeped in history from the American Revolution. Take a tour or use the hop on/off bus and Explore the Freedom Trail which passes 16 of the city’s historic landmarks
FEATURE DAY 3 BOSTON - KENNEBUNKPORT Collect your hire car from downtown Boston and start your New England self drive, follow the route north of Boston where you will find 4 centuries of history as well as some of the coasts best beaches and finest seascapes, take your time to stop and enjoy the coastline as your overnight at Kennebunkport is less than a 2 hour drive away. On arrival at Kennebunkport you will find the town is a haven for local artists and writers. DAY 4 KENNEBUNKPORT – BAR HARBOR – ACADIA NATIONAL PARK Today your New England self drive continues to follow the coastal road to Bar Harbor; along the way you will pass through quaint fishing villages, so take the opportunity to try a lobster or clam chowder for your lunch. Spend the remainder of the day exploring Bar Harbor DAY 5 ACADIA NATIONAL PARK Bar Harbor is the gateway to Arcadia National Park, spend today discovering the parks soaring peaks, dramatic glaciercarved valleys, clear lakes and rugged shoreline. DAY 6 BAR HARBOR – WHITE MOUNTAINS No New England self drive is complete without time in the White Mountains, also known as the rooftop of New Hampshire, a landscape dotted with historic villages and enchanting covered bridges. DAY 7 WHITE MOUNTAINS – STOWE Travel through the White Mountains that divide the states of New Hampshire and Vermont, the route will take you through some of New England’s most beautiful scenery. DAY 8 STOWE – THE BERKSHIRES Head south along route 100 passing the Green Mountains where you will see picture-perfect villages and some of Vermont’s famous covered bridges before crossing back in to Massachusetts and the Berkshires, known for their rural beauty and cultural assets. DAY 9 THE BERKSHIRES – NEWPORT Continue South and pass through a series of wonderful little towns before continuing to the storied little city of Newport, Rhode Island, once a prosperous colonial seaport.
DAY 10 NEWPORT – CAPE COD Newport is famous for its summer retreats of Americas most wealthy. Spend today relaxing on the beach or exploring one of the extravagant mansions before heading along the coast to Cape Cod for your next 2 nights. DAY 11 CAPE COD Spend today exploring Cape Cod and all it has to offer with its magnificently high cliffs, rolling dunes, miles of walking trails, more superb beaches and picturesque villages. TWO TRAINS RUNNING: AUGUST WILSON’S VIVID AND UPLIFTING PLAY COMES TO SOUTHAMPTON
BRAND NEW VENUE FOR HAMPSHIRE COUNTRY SPORTS DAY, SUNDAY 1ST SEPTEMBER 2019 AT BERELEIGH ESTATE One of the most popular events for those who love the countryside, the annual Hampshire Country Sports Day, will be held at a brand new venue: the Bereleigh Estate, East Meon, near Petersfield, on Sunday 1st September. The event, run in aid of the Countryside Alliance, will benefit from the beautiful setting and large open space of the Bereleigh Estate https:// bereleigh.co.uk/ which covers 2,500 acres within the undulating countryside of the South Downs National Park.
The event will feature exciting shows and demos in the main arena, including horseback falconry from Jonathan Marshall of Game of Thrones fame, terrier racing, gun dog demos, hound displays, fishing casting demos, a wildfowling demo by Chris Green ‘the Cornish Countryman’ and a gun dog display by Howard Kirby of Mullenscote. There will also be the inter hunt relay competition where rival hunts battle against the clock to build a hurdle fence then jump over it on horseback and with the terriers before dismantling it. In addition to the main arena events there is a packed programme of activities to watch or enter, including a Lurcher and Terrier and show, which is a qualifier for The Countryman's Weekly Champion of Champions 2019 at The Midland Game fair and a Family Fun Dog Show which always draws the crowds, featuring classes such as prettiest bitch, best child handler,
scruffiest dog (£2 entry per class). There is also a Gun Dog competition with three classes: scurry, pick up or steeplechase (£2 entry per class).
Following on from the success of A Streetcar Named Desire,Two Trains Running will be shown at At Nuffield Southampton Theatres City 17 – 21 September 2019, building on Nuffield Southampton Theatre’s ongoing work with the Royal Theatrical Support Trust. ‘Have a go’ activities include archery and clay shooting, which includes several competitions. A dedicated fly fishing area, run by the Salmon & Trout Conservation Hampshire Branch, will provide fly casting lessons throughout the day, for beginners to more advanced casting techniques.
2018 Winner and Director of Two Trains Running, Nancy Medina said: “I feel privileged and ecstatic to have been named the RTST’s Sir Peter Hall Director Award Winner for 2018. To get to the next step in my career, through the generous help of RTST, Royal & Derngate, and English Touring Theatre, is truly a dream come true. I cannot thank the RTST panel enough for making the process feel supportive and nurturing. I am thrilled to be directing August Wilson’s Two Trains Running for Royal & Derngate and ETT. It is about time that Wilson’s beautiful and poetic characters gain a wider audience across the UK.” Two Trains Running is set in Pittsburgh, 1969, and the regulars of Memphis Lee’s restaurant are struggling to cope with the turbulence of a world that is changing rapidly around them. The diner is scheduled to be torn down, a casualty of the city’s renovation project that is sweeping away the buildings of a community, but not its spirit.
Visitors to the event will also enjoy the huge range of more than 50 stalls showcasing the best countryside gifts, clothing, equestrian, shooting and fishing equipment, jewellery, crafts, and delicious food and drink. Gates open at 9.30am and the main ring events start at 10 am, with the main programme running until 17.30. Entry costs £12 for adults, while under 14s go free. Visit http://www.hampshirecountrysportsday. co.uk or call: 01380 831 068 or 07974 141 933 for more information.
With compassion and humour, the master American playwright August Wilson paints a vivid portrait of everyday lives in the shadow of this defining moment in American history. When Two Trains Running premiered on Broadway in 1992, its production won TONY, Drama Desk and Lucille Lortel awards and was shortlisted for the 1992 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. On September 23rd, the award-winning Clear Dentistry are opening their doors to the public for a free open evening to showcase their fantastic facial aesthetics and tooth whitening offerings. To help give you a taster of what you can expect that evening, we spoke to their fantastic hygiene therapist Kelly Burgin, and Dr Laura Milligan from Optimise Medical to find out more.
KELLY What is tooth whitening and why have it done? Tooth whitening is a process of lightening the colour of your natural teeth without the need for invasive tooth surface removal. As we get older teeth can become more discoloured, but also, they can become stained because of food and drinks, such as tea, coffee and red wine. Whiter teeth can make you feel more confident when you smile and even make you look younger. How does Tooth Whitening work? Is it safe? It’s a safe procedure using custom made trays that are filled with whitening gel and worn overnight either as a 2 week or 4-week prescription from your Clinician. Studies have shown there is no longterm damage to teeth from tooth whitening, although experiencing temporary sensitivity on your teeth and gums during treatment can occur. Our clinicians here at Clear Dentistry can advise you of the ways this can be managed during treatment. How long do the treatments usually last? The length of time the treatment results are maintained varies from person to person dependent on lifestyle. Smoking, foods and drinks can discolour the teeth once again over time, the good news is the tray system is reusable and can be topped up at any time to regain the brighter, cleaner looking smile. Can anyone have their teeth whitened? Whitening is effective at lightening tooth colour on natural teeth, it is ineffective in areas where amalgam or composite restorations exist, crowns, bridges or dentures. Our clinicians here at Clear Dentistry are expertly trained to recognise cases in which tooth whitening may not be suitable, we can advise you regarding your options and ensure the treatment is appropriate for you. Why have your teeth whitened at Clear Dentistry? DR LAURA So, please tell us what Optimise Medical offers? I am offering a range of treatments – anti-wrinkle injections, dermal fillers and Obagi skincare. My ethos is natural rejuvenation which is incredibly important to me. I think celebrities can give injectables a bad reputation as they can often look very unnatural. I want people to know that lines on their face can be softened with a range of treatments, giving the appearance of looking less tired/less angry and generally ‘optimised’ without anyone realising they have had any treatment. Obagi is an amazing medical grade skincare range which can help with acne, pigmentation, laxity of skin and fine lines. There’s a mixture of everyday products and prescription chemical peels to rejuvenate skin. I also offer treatments to help with excess sweating, teeth grinding, cheek contouring and lip fillers. What’s your background? I qualified as a doctor from Newcastle University in 2009 and work as a GP alongside my aesthetics. I have always been passionate about helping people and aesthetics is very fulfilling in this regard. I also love being able to use my medical background in a far more hands-on practical way than I ever could as a GP. I have 4 young daughters, so life is very busy, but I have an overwhelming passion for aesthetics, so I am always striving to learn more and offer new treatments. How long do the treatments usually last? Anti-wrinkle treatment lasts around 3-4 months but tends to last longer if you have regular treatments. Dermal fillers vary depending on the area injected, the type of filler and from person to person but usually in the region of 6-18 months. Why do you think facial aesthetics is becoming more popular? I think the taboo of aesthetics is slowly being broken down and younger people are keen to have preventative treatment. There have been leaps in technology so the hyaluronic acid fillers we use now are reversible, which makes them safer, compared to permanent silicone fillers. Ultimately, most people want to look their best and whether that’s a new haircut, clothes, teeth whitening or anti-wrinkle treatment, they all produce the same outcome – inner confidence. Why did you decide to offer your treatments at Clear Dentistry? It’s a beautiful, award winning practice and I wanted to perform treatments in a professional environment. Your smile has such an impact on your appearance so a location that compliments my services seemed the perfect fit. I just love the ambience of the whole place. What can we expect to see in the open evening? It’s an open and informal evening where I’m happy to chat to anyone who has questions or concerns about treatment. I will also be giving a talk on the different treatments I offer including a live demonstration. I'm in? How do I go about booking? Its simple! All you have to do is give Clear Dentistry a call on 01489 892240 and the receptionists will book you a place. Then all that’s left is to turn up and enjoy your evening! For more information about Dr Milligan’s treatments, please visit www.optimisemedical.co.uk, or www.cleardentistry.co.uk for tooth whitening. Alternatively, call 01489 892240 and one of Clear Dentistry’s fantastic reception team can provide you with all the details.

COMMUNITY
YOUR COMMUNITY NEEDS YOU!
learn as a group. We also have speakers from groups and charities attend frequently to build our knowledge and improve our service on a wide range of subjects. I COULDN’T DO CPR! Very few of our calls result in us performing CPR, in the last year our only 3% of our calls were to cardiac arrests. Instead, our service is mainly preventative, getting early help to patients is the first step in the chain of survival and having our volunteers ‘on-scene’ quickly to bridge the gap between ambulance response times will save lives, often just providing a calm and reassuring approach to those in need. An initial set of ‘observations’ handed to the paramedic teams close to the onset of illness ensures that patients get the correct treatment in a timely fashion.
Bishop’s Waltham Community First Responders are looking for volunteers to join their team. Have you always thought about donating some time for your community but scared you won’t know what to do? What is holding you back? I DON’T LIKE BLOOD Thankfully we don’t see much blood! Only 2% of our calls in the last year involved blood, our calls are very varied. Nearly half the calls in 2018 were to chest pain which could be a result of trauma, sepsis, anxiety, heart complications or many other reasons. Getting to patients quickly can calm and reassure those in need and often this reassurance is often all a vulnerable person may need. We carry oxygen on-board our vehicles in case patients need a top up, and by early intervention are able to ensure patients with sepsis, unstable diabetes and many other health complaints are dealt with safely to stand best chance of survival. I WOULDN’T KNOW WHAT TO DO! Our volunteers are given full training initially by the ambulance service and they also receive regular refreshers. When new volunteers join the group they ‘buddy’ up with an experienced member of the team and will never be left alone on call until they feel ready. Our group holds regular meetings where we share our experiences and
MEON VOICES CHOIR
Meon Voices is a vibrant choir which has given enormous pleasure to its members and audiences for over 40 years. Its leader Solveig Harris, a highly accomplished musician, says her main aim is to bring enjoyment to her choir members, to help them improve as singers and performers, and for the Meon Voices to become increasingly professional with every season. The choir sings a wide variety of music, from classical, through folk and religious pieces to fairly contemporary. The choir will re-start rehearsals on September 9th at the United Free Church in Bishops Waltham. If you are interested in joining us, or in receiving news of our performances please contact either Phil Coundley, email - coundleypj@yahoo.com telephone - 01489 579078 or Maureen Buckland, email - alan@agbuckland.plus.com telephone - 01489 890335. Our numbers have grown in the past couple of years to the limit we can accommodate, so we have introduced a waiting list for new singers. Phil or Maureen can advise on the current position.
I HAVEN’T GOT THE TIME! Our volunteers are on call 24hrs a day, 7 days a week. The rota is voluntary, you just commit to filling the hours you can fit around your life, which is different for each of our volunteers – we all have different personal commitments! South Central Ambulance Service asks that volunteers commit to around a minimum of just 5 hours a week minimum at a time that suits you. I’M TOO OLD/YOUNG! Volunteering as a CFR attracts members from all areas of the community and of all ages. Some of our younger volunteers have gone on to train as ECA’s or Paramedics with the ambulance service and many of our team are retired. Our volunteers are aged over 18 with a full driving licence and their own vehicle. We are all very different but share the common desire to make a difference to our community. We live in Bishop’s Waltham, Swanmore, Waltham Chase and the surrounding villages. Come and join our award winning team – we were the Community Responder Scheme on the year at the UK Heart Safe Awards in 2017. Interested in finding out more? Message our Facebook page @BishopsWalthamCommunityResponders or call our Co-Ordinator Andrew on 01489 893020

MOTORING Niall Holden, garage owner said “I would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who joined us for our first Winchester Auto Fest at the weekend. We couldn’t have asked for a better day for it and the turnout, tunes and atmosphere were first class. The event was launched to celebrate our first year at the garage and we are delighted to be able to donate a substantial amount raised on the night to Naomi House and Jacksplace in Sutton Scotney. We hope that Auto Fest will be back next year and become an annual event for the community and motoring enthusiasts in aid of a great cause.”
WINCHESTER AUTO FEST – A NEW CHARITY MOTORING AND MUSIC EVENT FOR THE TEST VALLEY Over five hundred locals, classic car fans and their families partied the night away at Winchester Auto Barn on Saturday 13th July at their inaugural Winchester Auto Fest. Motoring enthusiasts came to enjoy the eclectic array of classic and interesting sports cars on display at the countryside garage, including a rare 1972 Lamborghini Muira SV, a 1967 275 GTB/4 Ferrari, a De Lorean, a 1966 Mustang, a 1943 Dodge Truck and a MacLaren 650S to name just a few.
Gemma Rolfe, Fundraising Manager at Naomi House, said “Thank you so much to everyone at Auto Barn especially for the hard work and Saturday’s events in aid of Naomi House & Jacksplace and for allowing us to be part of the evening.” Winchester Auto Barn holds regular classic car breakfast meetings and also offers MOTs and servicing at competitive rates for all types of modern and classic vehicles. Their next meet is on Saturday 17th August from 9am-12pm. Tel: 01962 677776 www.winchesterautobarn.com Winchester Auto Barn Sutton Scotney, Winchester, SO21 3NS
DRIVE SAFELY! There were performances throughout the evening on the stage under the stars from Rock band The Reason, Blues Band The 663 Squadron and Acoustic guitar virtuoso Jake Morley. Older motorists have a wealth of experience and tolerance but sight, hearing and reaction time may not be a sharp as they once were. Hampshire has one of the highest number of drivers aged over 80 in the country. Fragility increases with age, so injuries tend to be more serious and recovery takes much longer. Casualty rates do increase for car drivers aged over about 65, and the fatality rate increases significantly. The Older Drivers Forum is about keeping mature motorists on the road safely for longer. The Older Drivers Forum can provide practical and informative support to help people continue driving safely. Find out more at www.olderdriversforum.com Also - Hampshire County Council’s Road Safety Team provides driving appraisals and free driver awareness workshops for drivers aged 60 and over. These can help drivers to update skills and knowledge, adapt to a new vehicle and gain confidence. CITIZENS ADVICE WINCHESTER Lesley Rose, Advice Services Manager for Citizens Advice Winchester District, advises on how to protect your family from scams. Five years ago my father-in-law was the victim of a scam artist who fleeced him out of £5,000. Once he realised, we were able to work with his bank to get some of the money back. We thought it was all in the past but in the last six months he’s received numerous calls, letters and texts from what look like other scammers. We want to try and keep him safe as his memory isn’t the best, what can we do? Unfortunately, falling victim to a scam once can increase exposure to further scams. Citizens Advice has found that, once someone has responded to a scam, their personal details can sometimes be sold onto other criminals. This then opens the door to more scam mail, emails, phone calls or home visits. If you recognise a pattern of unsolicited calls, talk to your father-in-law’s telephone provider and see if you can get these numbers blocked or if you can get something called a ‘standalone call blocker.’ If not, register your father-inlaw’s number with the Telephone Preference Service who can help you to handle unwanted marketing calls.
BISHOP'S WALTHAM GARDENING CLUB
With Autumn on the way and this, the ‘Harvest’ season in full swing, it doesn’t mean that we can’t plant anything. Certain types of broad bean and peas, garlic and onions can be sown soon as can shallots – perhaps the latter two might benefit from starting off indoors in pots. Spring Cabbage and Kale seedlings can be planted out, too. Even Lettuce can be sown indoors. Also, indoors, you could plant a spud in a 17ltr bag of light compost which may be O.K. for Christmas. Growing potatoes in bags seems to be de rigeur these days and well worth a try for 2020. Look at RHS.org.
If your father-in-law is receiving texts it’s important that he never replies, as sometimes there can be costly hidden charges. He can report the texts to his mobile phone provider who will be able to block the number. If he’s already been stung and call cost information wasn’t given, he should report it to Phone-pay Plus. Mail scammers can often impersonate banks, the local council, or other established and legitimate organisations. You should advise your father-in-law against responding unless he’s sure it’s legitimate and was expecting a letter. If in doubt he should contact the organisation directly to check the letter’s legitimacy. He should be careful to not just ring up the number on the letter as it could be a bogus call centre. In addition, to safeguard your father-on-law from unwanted marketing material or junk mail, register his name and address for free with the Mailing Preference Service which will take his name off some mailing lists. Doorstep scammers can often be intimidating, and unfortunately they commonly target older and more vulnerable people.Your father shouldn’t be embarrassed turning people away and shouldn’t let them in unless he’s expecting them. If someone comes to the door saying they are from one of his utility companies for example, he should ask to check their credentials. If in doubt, he should phone the company they represent or check online, but once again make sure to not just use the contact details they provide.

GUIDED WALK: IN JANE AUSTEN'S FOOTSTEPS - SEPTEMBER 20TH
Suitable for all abilities, but please wear sturdy, sensible footwear. The walk is around 1 mile in length with many stops for talking.
MEON VALLEY GARDEN CLUB CELEBRATES ITS 116TH BIRTHDAY On Saturday 15 June members of Meon Valley Garden Club gathered at Meonstoke Hall to celebrate the Club’s 116th Birthday with an afternoon tea organised by Lesley Lopez, the Club’s Show Secretary, and provided by the Club’s committee. A super time was had by the 80 members in attendance as they tucked into traditional fare of finger sandwiches, scones and clotted cream and birthday cake washed down with a glass of fizz and the ubiquitous cups of tea. Two members Stuart Attrill and Alan Hibbert spent some months last year conducting research to ascertain when the Club was established. They found a reference in the Hampshire Chronicle of 1904 reporting the Second Annual Show of the Meon Valley Flower, Fruit and Vegetable Show. Having missed the opportunity to celebrate the 100th birthday, the Committee decided it would be a great idea to hold an event to mark the ongoing success of such an old Club.
‘Three or four families in a country village is the very thing to work on…’ Jane Austen Join us for a relaxed stroll through Jane Austen’s country village of Chawton.Walk in Jane’s footsteps and find out more about the village in which Austen lived; the people she knew, the places she visited and the importance of village life in shaping her writing.Throughout the walk, short readings from Austen’s letters and novels will bring her world to life. Tickets available from www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/guided-walk-in-janeaustens-footsteps-tickets-61925776665 Fri, 20 September from 10:30am – 12:00pm at Jane Austen's House Museum,Winchester Road, Chawton, GU34 1SD Meet outside the front of the Museum. Excludes Museum admission.
The Afternoon Tea included an exhibition of Club artefacts some of which were recently presented to the current Chair, Olive Hathaway, by a former Chair Mr Everett. Amongst them were Show schedules going back to 1921 and Minute books dated from 1930. They provided an insight into social history and how times have changed. In 1921, there was one Class for ‘Women’ and that was a bowl of cooked potatoes together with a Class for ‘Ladies’ for flowering arranging. In 1950, the holder of the programme with the Lucky Number won a pig and the runner-up a pair of nylon stockings. In 1991, John Martin, Committee Member then and now and Club member for over 50 years, was in the local paper bemoaning that the Club was likely to fold as there was only 80 members and only a few members willing to help on Show day. It was about this time that the Club decided to reinvent itself as a Garden Club and today the Club boasts a flourishing membership of over 200. The next event at the Club is the Summer Show to be held at the Meonstoke Hall on Sunday 21 July at 1.30. In addition to the floral, vegetable and handicraft exhibits in the main hall, there are outside sideshows, games for the children, musical entertainment and, of course, teas, cakes and refreshments. Entry is only £1, with accompanied children free and ample free parking. So, pop it in your diary and enjoy an afternoon of fun. The schedule and entry form will be available on the Garden Club website pages found at www.droxfordweb.co.uk with many categories open to non members.

COMMUNITY Kate is difficult, argumentative, and 'unmarryable' at least in part because her father prefers her younger sister, Bianca. Petruchio, being up for a challenge and in order to win her dowry, decides to tame her. However, Kate is also witty, independent and bold, providing a storyline that centres on the battle of wills between her and Petruchio.
THIS IS A WAY TO KILL A WIFE WITH KINDNESS, AND THUS I’LL CURB HER MAD AND HEADSTRONG HUMOUR The Taming of the Shrew is one of Shakespeare’s earliest and darkest comedies – and is arguably one of his most controversial. This July and August, Titchfield Festival Theatre will stage this production in the historic Great Barn as the popular Bard at the Barn summer season continues.
SOUTHAMPTON RESIDENT ROWS 4000 MILES IN SUPPORT OF THE RNLI
Given a choice between the beautiful willing wife, and helping out your best friend by marrying the nagging one with a sting in her tale, who just happens to be worth lots and lots of money, Petruchio would surely want to help his friend out. How bad can she be? And if she really is that bad, can he tame his obnoxious, hot-tempered but intelligent and witty wife? Although the story focuses on the issues of gender and control, money and class in Elizabethan society, there is plenty of silliness, disguise, some drunkenness and the obligatory clown in Grumio to make this a Shakespearian play that all will enjoy and appreciate.
All contributions received will be go towards the RNLI being able to provide Rescue Water Crafts (jet ski’s) for our coastal beaches. These rapid response vehicles are used by the RNLI to reduce the time it takes getting to someone in trouble, such as inflatable in the current or a potential drowning situation.
The £100,000 renovations to the historic Great Barn are now complete with a new, traditional Shakespearian stage and oak hayloft. Shakespeare spent time living and working in Titchfield - including the building itself. It is therefore the perfect place to enjoy an early picnic tea and a Shakespeare T to round it off. The Taming of the Shrew opens on Tuesday 30th July with performances continuing until Thursday 8th August. The Sunday matinee is on 4th August and starts at 2.30pm.
Emma Bevan, who directed Much Ado About Nothing at the Great Barn last year, said: “There is a nice modern twist to the

Tanya, from Southampton, and current Area Vice Chair for Ladies Circle, said “I am a part of The Round Table Four Club Family which includes Round Table, Ladies Circle, Tangent & 41 Club. Being part of a 4 club association, where there is something for everyone, we help each other and support our local communities. This year the chosen charity for Tangent and 41 club to support is the RNLI. After chatting to Sue Hill, National President of Tangent, I thought why not add a few zero’s to the end of the number 4 and help. I got in touch with my local gym to gain help to raise money for the Tangent and 41 Club chosen charity of the Year, the RNLI.”
COFFEE AND CAKE GOES DOWN A TREAT
Tanya continued “The RNLI crews are voluntary members of the public, who put their lives at risk to venture into the dangers of our coastal tides and oceans without hesitation. They do this to save our lives and they deserve our respect and support” In July, Tanya Harder took on the ultimate challenge to fundraise the RNLI. Rowing the length of the Atlantic ocean (4000 miles) to promote the RNLI’s efforts of keeping us safe from the dangers that we incur whilst at sea.
beginning and then we are straight into a traditional Elizabethan setting for the main play. It is a physical comedy, with lots of great humour and fun throughout the play. I've tried to portray an easy to understand production for those less used to Shakespeare. We have included lots of physical clues and demonstrated Shakespeare's meaning in some imaginative ways where his language and expressions may seem old fashioned to us now.”
The RNLI have saved over 142,200 lives since 1824 but they are more than a rescue service. They influence, supervise and educate people too. Their Community Safety teams explain the risks and share safety knowledge with anyone going out to sea or to the coast. And their international teams work with likeminded organisations to help communities at risk all around the world. Real support can be given via the justgiving page. www.justgiving.com/tans4000mile Any donation will help save a life.
Home-Start Winchester was invited to hold a Charity Coffee Morning at Rick Stein’s Winchester High Street restaurant and visitors came pouring in to sample the fare on offer. Now local fundraisers are toasting each other in cups of coffee as they have raised over £500 towards their work with local families. Strictly no fish cakes on the menu but coffee and cake was served up by the Stein’s team all to help boost the charity’s fundraising campaign. “The Rick Stein team were helpfulness personified,” said Home-Start Winchester’s Events Chairman, Carolyn Beech. “It is a very generous gesture on their behalf and they bent over backwards to make everyone feel welcome - they even found a bowl of strawberries for a diabetic guest.” “We must raise around £60,000 each and every year to continue our work in and around the city, which is why we are so appreciative of this kind gesture,” said Carolyn. The charity’s 35 trained volunteers support on average 75 families a year, and will go into a family’s home on a regular basis for six months to a year to provide much needed help, friendship, advice and support during those vital years when children are young. The Rotary Club of Fareham welcomed incoming President Bishop Michael Cleaves at a changeover ceremony tonight (Thursday 27th). Outgoing President, Dr Lyndon Palmer, was warmly thanked by the Club for all he has achieved in his year of office which included generous support for the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance. Incoming President Michael is originally from South Wales but his life as a Baptist Minister since 1975 has taken him around the world to 45 countries in various roles. He was consecrated a Bishop by the Evangelical Baptist Church in Tibilisi, Georgia in 2009 where he taught theology for almost ten years on pastoral visits. Michael is also a Magistrate serving for nearly 27 years and knows the Fareham community well through his last appointment in this area. He and his wife Eirlys, also a Rotarian, were looking for an outside interest in retirement which served a purpose and the fellowship and service of the Rotary Club of Fareham fitted the bill. President Michael says “I have been very impressed by the range of activities and charities helped by the Club each year. My aim is to raise funds for the local Congenital Myatonic Dystrophy Support Group for children with a hidden disability, ie muscular dystrophy having been born with it myself. In addition, I would hope the Club can continue to raise funds for the provision of safe water for communities in drylands. I’m thinking especially of children in Kenya – fulfilling a long-held goal of the United Nations for immediate access to water sources for all.” That’s not to say the Club won’t have fun, as there will be visits, fellowship, fundraising events and a journey to our sister club in Cabourg in the Calvados region of Normandy, so appropriate with recent D-Day commemorations. We will keep you in touch with the Rotary Club of Fareham’s events and fundraising as the year progresses.

This is a very common question and source of worry for people, but a Will can clearly express at what age an individual should inherit and who will look after the money in the meantime. The slight hitch can be tax implications if you select an age over 18 and for that reason we

One potential issue arises if your son receives state benefits for his disability; as these may be lost if you leave money or assets to him when you die. I DON’T HAVE MUCH TO LEAVE, DO I REALLY NEED A WILL? Sadly too few people have Wills. The figures range but it is estimated that approximately only 40% of the population have a Will (at most). Wills do not just deal with items of intrinsic value but also emotional and sentimental worth. Many of our most contentious cases involve little money but a lot of heartache when there is no Will to tell the family who should keep a family heirloom or photograph, for example. THE LATEST ON LEASEHOLD REFORM CONCERNING LEASEHOLD FLATS AND HOUSES The leasehold residential property model has come under scrutiny recently, amid concerns of unfair practice in the leasehold market, in what is often now referred to as the ‘leasehold scandal’ or ‘ground rent scandal’.This became particularly acute where mortgage lenders advised that certain lease terms (short leases or high ground rents, for example) meant that they would not lend on certain leasehold properties with these onerous terms – making them extremely difficult for existing owners to sell. Many owners of leasehold property complained they were not fully aware or informed by their conveyancer at the time they purchased the property. It may seem like a long time remains on the lease, but you should start thinking about extending a lease with anything under 90 years remaining. We are increasingly finding that leases with under 85 years are becoming more difficult to sell or mortgage without a requirement for the lease to be extended. In July 2019 the Government published their response to the House, Communities and Local Government Select Committee report on Leasehold Reform, in the latest ongoing programme to review and reform residential leasehold property. The Committee launched its inquiry last year and reported its recommendations in March this year.
WALTHAM CHASE POST OFFICE: USE IT OR LOSE IT Back in 2011 we took over the village shop/ post office and we've invested a lot of time, effort and money to keep it going. We have worked extremely hard to make a success of our little village store. We have been lucky enough to live amongst you, make new friends and we are very grateful for your loyalty and continued support. There is a very strong community spirit in Waltham Chase and we are very proud to be a part of it. However, we have been struggling for a while now, we are living in very difficult times; many businesses large and small are closing, unable to stay open due to high rents, increases in the national living wage and business rates, and the ever popular online shopping. Like all businesses, we survive on your custom, and to secure our future in the village, we need to increase our turnover. If only 150 customers (we serve approx. 175 - 200 daily) spend just £5.00 each day this would do it. Just getting
THE GOVERNMENT HAS CONCLUDED A NUMBER OF KEY MEASURES INCLUDING: • give clearer information to consumers on how to buy and sell leasehold properties; • work with developers on a standardised ‘key features’ document so consumers have clear details on the lease before they buy; • remove any financial value from future ground rent; • extend mandatory membership of a redress scheme to all freeholders of leasehold properties; • implement improvements to enfranchisement as soon as possible.
OUR LEASEHOLD ENFRANCHISEMENT SOLICITORS CAN ADVISE YOU ON YOUR RIGHTS AND THE EXISTING LEGAL PROCESSES FOR: • extending your lease • acquiring the leasehold of your freehold house • acquiring the freehold of your block of flats • rights to manage your block of flats
On 27 June 2019 the Government also issued a press release confirming plans to abolish the selling of new-build leasehold houses and ensure new leases have a zero ground rent. Further they state that “where buyers are incorrectly sold a leasehold home – saddling them with a property that could ultimately prove difficult to sell – consumers will be able to get their freehold outright at no extra cost”. Whilst these points will all be welcome news on the subject of reforming leasehold, they are fairly broad sweeping statements at this stage and until legislation is put into effect (which takes time) the leasehold system remains in effect. Leasehold enfranchisement is a complex area of law that requires specialist legal advice. For those who already own leasehold property, the good news is that there are existing provisions for owners of leasehold flats and houses to extend their leases or acquire the freehold of their properties. your milk, bread and eggs from us would not only benefit us but it would also support the local businesses that supply us. GET OUT FOR THE COUNT! This summer marks the 10th anniversary of the Big Butterfly Count - the world’s largest butterfly survey! Wildlife charity Butterfly Conservation is calling on everyone to do as many 15-minute Counts as possible until Sunday 11th August. Simply record what you see and send your results to www. bigbutterflycount.org or submit them using the free Big Butterfly Count app. Last year a record 100,000 participants took part, spotting almost one million butterflies across the UK.This summer, experts are keen to see how common garden butterflies are faring, as despite many species bouncing back in the 2018 heatwave, colourful favourites such as the Small Tortoiseshell and Peacock both recorded poor years. Butterfly Conservation Vice-President Chris Packham is following in the footsteps of Sir David Attenborough by getting behind the campaign this year. Chris said: “It’s easy to feel powerless when confronted with endless decline statistics from birds to bees to butterflies, but the fight for our environmental future starts with small acts, it starts with you. “That’s why I urge you to take part in the Big Butterfly Count this summer. By taking part in the Count you are showing that our butterflies, our wildlife and our environment are worth fighting for.” People can take part in their gardens or local parks, but there are plenty of free events taking place across the country too - more details can be found at www.butterfly-conservation.org/events
WHY COUNT BUTTERFLIES? Butterflies react very quickly to change in their environment which makes them excellent biodiversity indicators. Butterfly declines are an early warning for other wildlife losses. That’s why counting butterflies can be described as taking the pulse of nature. The count will also assist us in identifying trends in species that will help us plan how to protect butterflies from extinction, as well as understand the effect of climate change on wildlife. HOW TO TAKE PART Simply count butterflies for 15 minutes during bright (preferably sunny) weather during the big butterfly count. We have chosen this time of year because most butterflies are at the adult stage of their lifecycle, so more likely to be seen. Records are welcome from anywhere: from parks, school grounds and gardens, to fields and forests. If you are counting from a fixed position in your garden, count the maximum number of each species that you can see at a single time. For example, if you see three Red Admirals together on a buddleia bush then record it as 3, but if you only see one at a time then record it as 1 (even if you saw one on several occasions) – this is so that you don’t count the same butterfly more than once . If you are doing your count on a walk, then simply total up the number of each butterfly species that you see during the 15 minutes. You can send in your sightings online at www.bigbutterflycount.org or by using our FREE big butterfly count smartphone apps available for iOS and Android. Unfortunately, we cannot accept any counts sent in on paper or by email, text or phone. The website will be open to receive records throughout July and August. WHO IS RUNNING THE SURVEY? The survey is run by the charity Butterfly Conservation. YOU CAN HELP BUTTERFLY CONSERVATION IN MANY WAYS: • Become a member • Help with our other surveys • Donate money to help us save butterflies and moths • Tell your friends how to get involved Best wishes, Katie Callaghan

PETERSFIELD SUMMER FESTIVAL
BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND, 24TH - 26TH AUGUST After the success of the recent Petersfield Spring Festival back in May this year, the Petersfield Summer Festival will be back again in full force this year with hopefully a sun filled Bank Holiday weekend in the centre of Petersfield. The sun will be out (fingers crossed), the cars will be out, the Empire and Rebellion will be out as well as other super hero characters and with all of these elements as just a taste of things at the Festival the smiles will be out with young and old enjoying themselves with everything on offer. For the ninth successful year the free-to-enter Petersfield Summer Festival will take place on the busy streets and market square in the centre of Petersfield. It will feature three days of top quality live music with the festival starting on the Saturday evening at 7pm followed by two full days of fantastic varied market stall trading featuring some of the best food and products available from the local area as well as awesome family entertainment and activities. Over the course of the weekend, we will have the return of a whole host of classic cars on display during Sunday as the Petersfield Post & Herald Summer Motor Show return to delight the Petersfield crowds. THE MUSICAL LINE UP IS LOOKING FANTASTIC We will be making musical announcements over the coming weeks via our website
www.petersfieldfest.com/wp/index.php/ summer-festival/ once all of the acts demands have been met.The demands have been exhausting this year but we are slowly making it happen. The unicorns to ride backstage have been ordered, the sharing bags full of only red and white M&M’s, the bottles of Coke Zero with sugar cubes in, the list goes on.. SATURDAY NIGHT HEADLINER The Cracklin’ Griffins With traditional Irish songs and tunes, Old Time American, Pogues classics and Originals, the Cracklin’ Griffins have been wowing the crowds, young and old, with their fast and furious folk-rock all across the country for decades. Originally formed on Christmas Eve 1990 in a pub in Canterbury, the band has seen many transformations and line-up changes. Front-man Big Jim has been there from the beginning, and the present line-up is the best in the band’s long history. SUNDAY NIGHT HEADLINER Alive We had Alive booked in to play last year as part of the Sunday Night entertainment which we unfortunately had to cancel due to the adverse weather conditions and so we decided they had to have the chance to come back and play for you all again in 2019. Alive are widely regarded as one of the best modern covers bands performing in the UK. Our live show will get your party jumping and
give you a night of incredible live music to remember! MONDAY EVENING HEADLINER LEVI LEVI are breaking out into the Ska – Indie music scene, promoting a new version of sound called ‘Skindie’. Influenced by Ska and Reggae, LEVI established a scene in and around the south coast with high charged gigs of original Reggae, Ska, Indie, Rock compilations. In 2016, E.P. Blue Lights and Headlines was released, following a string of gigs including Portsmouth’s Wedgewood Rooms, Brighton’s The Prince Albert, Blissfield’s ‘Hidden Hedge Stage’ and ‘The Big One 5, Specialised gig. LEVI continue to break out in the music scene playing regular gigs with a huge following of ‘Skindians’, their loyal fans all over the world. With every event we put on, we continually try and improve and grow and so if you have any ideas of anything you would like to see included. Please let us know. Thank you to our awesome sponsors of last years event, we really do appreciate all of your support in helping us put on our events. Please remember to buy local and support these businesses. GET STARTED LIVING PLASTIC FREE Disposable plastic items are so common that it’s easy not to notice them, but disposable plastic is everywhere. Here are some tips on how to reduce your own plastic footprint. WATER Bring a stainless steel water bottle rather than drinking water out of disposable plastic bottles. Don’t have your stainless steel bottle with you? Buy a glass-bottled drink. When you finish that beverage, reuse the bottle or make sure to recycle it. Glass is recycled at much higher rates than plastic. BRING YOUR OWN BAG Always bring your own bags whenever you shop, not just for the supermarket. By bringing

TO-GO CUPS Bring your own stainless steel or ceramic mug. Carry one in your car. Some coffee shops will even reward your thoughtfulness with a small discount on coffee or tea. SMOKING Not that you need another pressure to stop smoking if you already do, but did you know that cigarette filters are actually made of plastic? But if you’re not ready to take the step to quit, at least rethink the lighter. Rather than buy plastic disposable lighters, consider investing in a refillable multi-use lighter like a 'Zippo'. MILK OR JUICE Where possible, buy your milk or juice in a glass returnable/reusable bottle. It may seem old fashioned, but it tastes great, and it’s better for you. SAY NO TO PLASTIC WRAP There are many excellent substitutes to the ubiquitous stretch plastic wrap we have been told is essential for cooking and preserving foods - like beeswax paper! It conforms to bowls and containers, keeps sandwiches fresh, and it washable and reusable.

Starting in Upham, with breakfast at Bill Rawles Classic Car Restoration Factory (the main sponsors); lunch at Wellow Golf Club; and static displays at both Winchester Cathedral and Salisbury Cathedral, the cars made wonderful exhibits for the public to view. Organized by Jason Rule, this event raised about £3,000 to be distributed to charities: No Limits, which offers free and confidential information, advice, counselling, support and advocacy for under 26 year olds; and The Society Of St James, which aims to help vulnerable people experiencing homelessness, problems with alcohol and substance use and other complex needs, to change their lives. “Forecast is good for tomorrow.” A quick consultation with his smartphone apparently confirmed sunshine all the way to Sunday lunchtime. She admired his faith in the weather app. Personally, she put more store in her arthritic knee, which ached like an achy thing when rain was in the offing. And, like a giant tooth with a faulty filling in the middle of her leg, it was hurting. Popping an anti-inflammatory, she kept her own counsel and mentally located the pop-up gazebo in the garage. A bruising trip to the supermarket ensued – each armed with a trolley they filed in with the masses. There were many men clustered around the chiller cabinets of meat products – presumably all with the same weather app as her own darling husband. A tall burly chap in a vest and sporting, she noticed, rather beautiful tattooed sleeves, grasped the last catering-sized pack of free-range pork sausages at the same time as her beloved. Fearing a slight altercation, she watched as her husband looked up (and up) at the lofty competition for his favourite porky treats. However, with a gracious “That’s alright mate – you go ahead. I was thinking of giving the duck breasts a go anyway”, the manmountain sauntered off on muscular legs in search of poultry. Relieved, she left hubby to pillage all things beef as she detoured to the salad area via the baking goods, the fruit aisle via the eggs, the herbs and spices via the dairy products, before reuniting with him in the drinks aisle, where he was laying waste to the imported beer section. No need to plunder the wines as they’d not long returned from a week in Bordeaux… Saturday dawned fine, but her meteorological knee disagreed with the current benign skyscape and she dragged the gazebo out from its hiding place, as he wheeled the all-singing-all-dancing-superbarbecue onto the patio. A long-lusted after addition to his shed, it had been by far the best loved birthday present she’d ever bought him, in spite of the fact that he used it twice a year - at most. As she assembled a salad of crumbled feta and beetroot, a dish of griddled Mediterranean vegetables and another of roasted butternut squash with sunflower seeds, she watched him from the kitchen window. Using the quick-lighting gadget she’d bought him for Christmas, he lit the barbecue before coming into the kitchen to pile dishes with a carnivore’s fantasy. Humming happily to himself he kissed her and beetled off to the garden once more. Dressed rocket and radicchio baubled with cherry tomatoes was placed on the table next to her home-made rosemary focaccia loaves and cottage rolls. Later, she’d cook the jersey royals to be ready just in time for the meat. Similarly, at the last minute, so it
didn’t go soggy, she’d transform the giant meringues she’d been up late preparing into a raspberry pavlova. And break out the brownies. Friends and family arrived for lunch along with the rain. The children drifted off to watch age-appropriate films in different rooms – the sound of something Pixar from one, Marvel from another. Grasping bottles of beer, the men splashily sprinted to the gazebo and barbecue, magnetically drawn by the primal combination of fire and meat. The women watched from the house, chatting, Chardonnay in hand. Holding court, her husband, sporting his chef ’s hat, was brandishing tongs and spatula, flipping burgers, turning sausages, and rotating chicken thighs like a possessed conductor. His grand finale of steaks, precisely seared with a perfect checker-plate was impressive, professional almost. The party over, the rain abated along with the ache in her knee. The clearing up not too arduous - little food remained and the dishwasher was doing sterling service. Outside in the gazebo, Hubby was busy restoring his pride and joy to its gleaming best. Wondering, as she usually did post-barbecue, how a man literally unable to boil an egg produced such excellence without practice. Nothing fancy, but everything was grilled so beautifully – no charcoal encrusted offerings. Juicy burgers, bronzed sausages and the chicken was succulent yet cooked through and crispy-skinned – the steak… perfection. Did it peeve her that he totally stole the show with an hour’s effort, whilst she had spent a whole afternoon, evening and morning prepping, peeling, kneading, whisking, mixing, roasting and baking? No… she was pleased for him. Really. Her face however, unbeknownst to her, adopted what the children called her ‘evil genius’ expression as she ordered a book on Amazon Prime. Strike whilst the iron griddle is hot, she decided. “Darling” she called out “Don’t put it away in the shed. And leave the gazebo up. I think we should barbecue more – you enjoy it so much and it’s so delicious.” “Really? Oh, OK. For the summer?” “Yes – and maybe into the autumn if the weather is fine. Might be fun for Halloween and great for Guy Fawkes too. In fact, I’ve read that some people roast their Christmas turkey on the barbecue – now there’s an idea…” He laughed incredulously. Bless him. Her phone gave a little ding. ‘BBQ-ing 365’ would be arriving tomorrow…
