French Lessons
© Lucia Foster-Found 2022 www.luciafosterfound.com
An autumn ‘vacance’, the first for years. Yet again she promised herself that her French would be better next time - pretty sure she’d told the campsite’s aquafit instructor that she was ‘bored’, not ‘trying’… And Himself’s could do with a little work. In a tabac, buying cigars for a friend, he’d flexed that old standby; speak English loudly and slowly. And point. But when he’d also affected a French accent and said “can ah av un box uf cigarrs pliz,” she’d had to abandon him. Stifling hysterics, she’d feared for her bladder. It had been September – the sun surprisingly hot. Clusters of tourists moved unhurriedly here and there in the shimmering heat. More than a few were licking ice cream cones as they sauntered along the dusty street, idly surveying the souvenirs at roadside stalls.
She and Himself were strolling towards the lighthouse museum and, as she gazed up at the towering structure, she noticed that the flag was flying at half-mast. The thought flitted through her mind “I wonder who…?” before she realised.
“Look!” She pointed up at the Tricolore which hung half way up the flagpole, the blue, white and red vertical stripes stirring slowly in the warm breeze.
“For the Queen?” He asked in amazement. They’d not been as fully immersed in the public grieving as those back at home, but the French had revealed a surprising sense of their own loss. When the holidaymakers caught sight of the TV news, invariably it was concerning the death of the Queen. Even across most of the papers; one, Le Parisien, had headlined ‘We loved her so much.’
“Who knew?” Himself shook his head in astonishment. The next day whilst casting off the beach, they were approached by curious French onlookers, asking how many fish they’d caught. Her laughing answer “rien” brought forth Gallic shrugs and smiles. As the group turned away, they said in English, “we are very sorry about your Queen,” making heart shapes with their hands. She’d surprised even herself by bursting into tears.
If the ‘botte’ had been on the other ‘pied’, she hoped that Brits would have been as sensitive. Had they been in England and not France, she’d have queued for the Queen’s lying in State. Fortunately though, Beckham did it for her; she queued vicariously through and with him and hoped they’d exchanged numbers. Fanciful, but anything seemed possible. The world had turned upside down - the Queen was dead. In spite of the underlying sorrow she felt every time she looked at the news, they had a wonderful holiday. It didn’t seem like years since the last one, although the eye-watering cost of two beers in a bar suggested that both time and the exchange rate had not stood still.
French pride in all things French had not altered, however. Himself mentioned the word subsidies, but no denying the campsite was filled with Renaults, Peugeots and Citroens.
And French ingenuity had marched on. “Look Darling, there’s a vending machine for cartons of live oysters, complete with a lemon, should your shellfish addiction need a fix at three in the morning.” And then there was the French respect for their environment; though every inch of sand had been littered with French bodies the colour of mahogany, not one scrap of rubbish was left on the beach. And no bins. “Impressive.” Himself said enviously. “A bit different from Bournemouth – bet French metal detectorists don’t just find cans, bottle tops and tent pegs.”
On the long, smooth drive to the return ferry, she observed, “And I haven’t missed that exciting slalom of pothole dodging we do so enjoy back home.”
“Missed what Darling?” Himself was distracted. He went on without waiting for an answer, “um, thankfully you didn’t notice, but once or twice I almost caught myself speaking English with a French accent. That would have been embarrassing. I’ll need a few French Lessons before our next trip.”
Thinking of the clean beaches, the smooth roads, the patriotism, the respect and the sympathy – she said, “French lessons? It ‘Gaul’s me to say it, but I think we just had some...”

Bespoke Kitchens & Furniture
HappyKitchens have a unique approach when it comes to kitchens and custom spaces in the home. We use excellent quality materials which are fitted by exshipwright joiners, who used to fit the woodwork on Super Yachts. That in itself is unique in our industry but then add in the fact that we are bespoke, but don’t charge the inflated prices that your highend high street showrooms do, gives us the recipe for your perfect home solution. This is why we are one of the highest rated home improvement companies on HOUZZ, beating all the top names you might recognise when walking down your high street.
We have never had less than a 5star
review and have won the HOUZZ best of service award every year since it has been running. The staff at HOUZZ reference us to other companies as to how customer service should be done. Many of our customers have used us 2 or 3 times due to moving house or tackling other projects in their existing houses.
We do not have a template for design and take a fresh approach with every customer. It is important to take all the best ideas a customer has, then bring in the experience we have to offer, and often our ideas will be completely different to any other companies as we are innovative and bespoke. We often hear that customers have had designs and quotes that all look the same, are boring and
un-exciting, yet expensive. This is because most high street ‘kitchen designers’ are just salespeople with no idea on how a kitchen works.
6
Bespoke sizing - Media walls, boot rooms, custom offices, installed by ex shipwright joiners with exceptional attention to detail
So whether you need an amazing Kitchen, Utility, Bedroom, coffee bar with custom pod storage, Office, Media wall or Living Room storage we can help. The design visits are free of charge, and we can quote on the same day. Also Ben loves design, so often at no extra charge, he will help you choose paint colours, light fittings, Bar stools, artwork and can even recommend great pots and pans.

Our customers will often use us again, and recommend us to Family and Friends. The quote from the review above was from a customer who has chosen us twice, and their parents also have a Happy Kitchen, and two of the parents' friends.
“HappyKitchens.WOWWOW WOW.Thankyousomuchforgiving usthewowfactorweaskedfor.” The McAdams – June 21
The biggest compliment we get from our customers is always around our attention to detail and often bringing something completely different to the table. If you are still unsure after reading this, go and read some of our reviews on our Happy Kitchens Houzz profile, and do a search of kitchen companies on there by review rating, we are always close to the top of the list.
Out-of-the-box thinking, bespoke design features, and friendly staff with excellent attention to detail are just a few of the reasons you should call us today. If that isn’t enough please do remember that the design visit is free of charge, so you have nothing to lose.

Now is the time for the steady hand of a professional agent.
As we move through turbulent economic times it is important to remember it is the events in the lives of individuals which have the most influence on property decisions. These can be neatly categorised as the A – D of the property market.
A is for ambition – the personal ambition to live somewhere better, bigger, smaller, prettier, more convenient, or simply closer to or further from family…. The reasons are endless and personal.
B is for birth – as families grow they look for more accommodation.
C is for consolidation – people wanting to cohabit or downsize after children have left.
D is for death, divorce and debt – the infamous three events that stimulate a high proportion of movement in the market.
When external factors are unpredictable it is important to seek the advice of a calm, experienced property professional who has seen these events and circumstances previously and can guide you through. Not only when it comes to buying and selling but also as a landlord or tenant.
Everyone needs somewhere to live and whilst prices will rise and fall, there will always be a market driven by personal circumstance.
The steady hand of an experienced estate agent will ensure you get the best out of the market when you need to.
Call Kate Porter - Sales, Claudia Hunt - Lettings or Marishelle Butler - Management on 01730 771222 for that calm and steady hand.

Bishop’s Waltham Wins Yet Again
Following on from being awarded Village of the Year in 2019, Bishop’s Waltham has had yet another win in the Hampshire Association of Local Government Awards.
This time (and 2022 was the first time the awards had been run since 2019 due to the pandemic), we won the accolade for “Best Community Event of the Year” for our Tudor Experience Commemoration of Henry VIII visiting Bishop’s Waltham 500 years ago.
As the winner of the 2019 Hampshire and Isle of Wight Village of the Year Award, it was our pleasure to host the 2022 Village of the Year Award Ceremony in Bishop’s Waltham on 29th September. In a whistle stop presentation by 16 community representatives we presented to the audience what makes Bishop’s Waltham so special and why we won the Village of the Year Award in 2019.
In 2022, we decided to nominate ourselves for the Community Event of the Year, leaving other Hampshire and Isle of Wight villages to compete for the overall Village of the Year Award. It was won by Odiham Parish in North Hampshire, for demonstrating a wealth of services benefiting their community.
We were delighted to win the Best Community Event of the Year Award, competing against other villages in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. Our entry was recognized both for the partnership approach used to organize the event in which the Bishop’s Waltham Society, the Town Team and the Museum came together to form the Planning Group and share the load. The judges were also very impressed by the involvement of so many local people and organisations – community organisations, the traders and the hundreds of volunteers who helped to lay it on. We were able to show the audience the film that was produced of the
Tudor Experience Event (available to view at https://youtu.be/8HnhR8W6u6w) which really helped to bring the event to life.
Councillor Judy Marsh, Chairman of the Bishop’s Waltham Parish Council said “this award is a very deserved recognition of all the hard work and creativity that was put in by so many people to make the commemoration of Henry VIII’s visit to Bishop’s Waltham 500 years ago, such a successful event. It is a shining example of what working together can achieve; and everyone who was involved should feel very proud of the part they played in it”

Boosting your blooms
Hello plant lovers!
Today is about making plant feeds to boost your blooms, as an adjunct to good soil care. Traditionally Comfrey (Symphytum) tea is used to boost flowering, by supplying Potassium (K) to plants. It has a deep tap root that draws minerals up into its leaves. Teas of Symphytum species supply Phosphorus, Nitrogen and Calcium. Nettle (Urticaria dioica) tea supplys Nitrogen, which is good for promoting leafy growth.
. To pick comfrey find gloves, an airtight container, and secateurs. Comfrey leaves are hairy and can irritate skin, as can nettles
. ID your plants. Gather only those plants that are away from areas that may have been sprayed with weed killers. Some Symphytum varieties are more vigorous than others and so could support a quarterly harvest of leaves for tea, but any could be used.
. When Gathering Urtica dioica ( nettle ), remember to leave a few for moths such as the Garden Tiger, Ghost Moth, The Gothic, and the Grey Pug and my favourite, the White Ermine.
. Chop a generous armfull of leaves and place in a bucket. Some people add water, some avoid it as the liquid stinks, and without water the process is less smelly! Keep the bucket tightly covered for 2-6 weeks while the leaves rot down.
. Dilute 1 part of comfrey tea to 10 parts of water, if you used water. (For example: add 100 ml of comfrey feed to 1 little of water)
. Water your plants with the feeds every 2 weeks in the growing season.
. Use the nettle tea at the early stages, and comfrey tea at the flowering stage.

Hampshire Fare Receive Award of Merit From The Romsey Show
Hampshire Fare, the county food and drink group, were delighted to receive the Award of Merit, presented at the Romsey Show on Saturday, 10th September 2022.
The Award of Merit is presented to an individual, family, business or organisation that has given an outstanding contribution to agriculture, horticulture, farming, forestry, equine and allied businesses. The Romsey Agricultural & Horse Show Society, the organisers of the Romsey Show, felt that Hampshire Fare perfectly fitted the criteria for the Award of Merit due to Hampshire Fare being such a huge advocate for local food and drink, and therefore providing essential support to local farmers and producers.
Judith Long, Food Zone Chairman for the Romsey Show, said: “Congratulations to Hampshire Fare on the group’s much deserved award! I nominated Hampshire Fare for the Award of Merit as I thought Hampshire Fare encompassed everything that the Romsey Show’s Award of Merit stands for. Hampshire Fare support so many aspects of the local rural economy and rural life by promoting the produce of our area and those who grow, process, use or sell it.
“Hampshire Fare has gone from strength to strength since it was
formed over 30 years ago in 1991. However, I felt that more people outside Hampshire Fare’s membership should hear about the fantastic work Hampshire Fare does. I hope this Award may inspire others to take a greater interest in Hampshire Fare’s work, and in their own food, where it comes from and who produces it.”
Hampshire Fare support the Romsey Show by helping to promote the event as well as organising the hugely popular Skills Kitchen with an inspiring line up of top chefs.
The Award of Merit was presented to Mike Wright, Chairman, and Tracy Nash, Commercial Manager, Hampshire Fare, by John Whitham, joint President of The Romsey Agricultural & Horse Show Society and Show President.
Tracy Nash, Commercial Manager, Hampshire Fare, commented: “We were very proud to be presented with the Romsey Show’s Award of Merit at this year’s Show. It was such a surprise; we had no idea why we were being called up to the main show ring. It really means so much to have our work helping farmers and producers over the past 30 years recognised. The Romsey Show is one of the highlights of Hampshire’s events calendar and we enjoy working with the team organising the Show, as well as putting together the Skills Kitchen featuring a line up of some of Hampshire’s top chefs.”
Mike Wright, Chairman, Hampshire Fare, added: “This Award recognises the success of Hampshire Fare, a very small team that for over 30 years have worked hard to get Hampshire’s food and drink the recognition it deserves.”

The T.O.A.D.S PantoMother Goose
The Old Alresford Dramatic Society (T.O.A.D.S) has been writing, creating, and performing pantomimes in the village (Christy) hall since 1986. Following the closure of the village school and post office, and with a view to bringing the community together, an amateur drama group was formed, with people of all ages from eight – 80 years.
The pantomimes are written/edited, produced, and performed, by members of TOADS. This is the home of Dad jokes, Mum puns and slapstick. Of familiar songs, glittering costumes, stunning scenery, and many – many laughs, both deliberate and accidental. And we wouldn’t want it any other way – oh no we wouldn’t.
Pantomime is quintessentially Christmas; familiar, cosy and loved since childhood. And it’s so good to feel part of a show that is right on our doorstep, full of friendly faces old and new, and to join in the traditional audience banter, unabashed.
This year is the 36th panto and TOADS is giving Mother Goose more twists than a contortionist playing Twister, so there’s plenty for everyone to enjoy. Written and directed by founder member Helen Gard and long-time member Jo Stokes, Mother Goose features classic nursery rhyme characters, goodies and baddies, golden eggs and fluffy fairies.
It got us thinking about both the origins of panto - pantomime literally means “all kinds” of “mime”, the timing, evolved from the Tudor “Feast of Fools” and role reversal of the lead characters, which is thought to have originated from the practice of benevolent masters who allowed their servants to be the boss on special celebratory occasions.
As for the term “Mother Goose” that seems to have originated from the 8th century with Bertrada II of Laon (mother of Charlemagne, the first emperor of the Holy Roman Empire) who was a patron of children and known as “Goose-foot Bertha” or “Queen Goosefoot” due to a malformation of her foot – but who really knows? What we do know is that this year’s panto is going to be egg- cellent and we want to see you there.
Mother Goose runs December 6th - 10th inclusive, at Christy Hall, Old Alresford: Tickets are £10 via www.ticketsource.co.uk/toads

Local TreasuresTitchfield Abbey
The ruins of 13th-century Titchfield Abbey, the last monastery of Premonstratensian canons to be founded in England, lie in the valley of the River Meon in south Hampshire.
In 1537, after the Suppression of the Monasteries, the abbey was transformed into a grand mansion called Place House, reusing many of the monastic buildings. A large gatehouse was built across the nave of the monastic church.
THE ABBEY
The abbey of St Mary and St John the Evangelist was founded in 1231/2 by Peter des Roches, Bishop of Winchester, for Premonstratensian canons, an order founded at Prémontré in France and known also as the ‘white canons’. The canons lived a communal life under monastic vows, but were also involved in the wider community, preaching and teaching the Gospel. Of the 14 or 15 canons here, two served as vicars to nearby parish churches.
The abbey owned many thousands of acres of land and had its own farm buildings and a series of fishponds. Titchfield was a good stopping-off place for journeys to the Continent, and Henry V (r.1413–22) stayed there before departing on campaign in France.
PLACE HOUSE
At the Suppression of the Monasteries the abbey was granted in 1537 to Thomas Wriothesley, later 1st Earl of Southampton, who was a loyal civil servant to King Henry VIII. He played a key part in the suppression and was given monastic lands as a reward.
Central to Wriothesley’s new domain were the 11 manors and 5,000 acres (2,024 hectares) surrounding Titchfield Abbey. He proceeded to transform the main abbey buildings into Place House, a residence fit for a rising courtier. Royal guests at the house included Edward VI, Elizabeth I and Charles I with his queen, Henrietta Maria. Wriothesley’s grandson Henry, 3rd Earl of Southampton, was a patron of William Shakespeare and it is believed that some of Shakespeare’s plays were performed here for the first time.
On the death of the 4th Earl of Southampton Titchfield passed through several families, until 1781, when most of the building was demolished for building stone. In the early 20th century archaeological excavations helped to clarify the layout of the monastic buildings.

CPRE Hampshire share the hedgerow love with
Fund
of
Community groups from across Hampshire are being invited to apply for grants of up to £750 to assist with the planting or restoration, by laying or gapping up, of hedges in areas accessible to the public.
At CPRE Hampshire, they are passionate about hedges. Not only as a beautiful feature of the countryside, green spaces and gardens, but for the contribution they make to reversing the effects of climate change, and in providing shelter, homes, safe travel and food to all kinds of wildlife. In recognition of the value they offer, the Hampshire based countryside charity has launched a Community ‘Hedge’ Fund.
The aim is to reach across Hampshire to assist the national CPRE target of increasing the length of hedgerows in the UK by 40% by 2050. Since 1945, we have lost half our hedgerows, intensifying nature’s decline and hindering the fight against climate change. CPRE Hampshire is determined to help in turning this round by communicating the important role hedgerows play, as well as undertaking projects around restoring and planting.
Recent initiatives include a project in the South West of Hampshire to restore and plant hedgerows, involving local schools, the local Young Famers and a team of volunteers. A new initiative is currently underway with Hampshire County Farms in a new location near Fareham with a new set of volunteers and community groups involved.
Boyd McCleary, CPRE Hampshire Vice Chair said: “We are delighted to launch the Community Hedge Fund. Hedgerows need our help. Around 50% of this country’s hedgerows have disappeared since the Second World War and many more have been seriously degraded or are otherwise under threat. This is a great opportunity to get local communities involved and get some more hedges planted or repaired in public spaces that really need it.”
If you think your local public areas or community groups would benefit, visit www.cprehampshire.org.uk or email the CPRE Hampshire Hedgerow Co-ordinator at ellie.banks@cprehampshire. org.uk. Guidance and advice can also be provided where needed.
The deadline for applications is Friday 11th November 2022.

‘At some point, your business may receive a tribunal claim,’ says Linda Wilson, Partner and head of the employment law department at MacDonald Oates Solicitors. ‘Although a tribunal claim can seem daunting, knowing what to expect could help you defend the claim as effectively as possible.
Acas early conciliation - In most cases, the employee must contact Acas first to trigger early conciliation. During this time Acas mediate between the parties to try to settle the potential claim. If the conciliation is unsuccessful, the individual is issued with a certificate. Without this, they cannot bring a claim.
Receiving the claim - The tribunal will send you the claim form (called an ET1), often with an attachment setting out the claim in more detail (the particulars of claim). You will also receive a letter informing you of the date by which you have to submit a response
Winchester City Council supports first Winchester District Climate Assembly event
A full day event dedicated to discussing local priorities for reducing carbon emissions and reducing the cost of living is being hosted in Winchester for the first time and will offer residents across the district an opportunity to join the conversation.
The event, led by Winchester Together for our Planet, was held at Winchester Guildhall on Saturday 22 October. Cllr Kelsie Learney, the Cabinet Member for Climate Emergency at the city council joined the event to listen to participants views and speak about how they will influence the Council’s plans to achieve carbon neutrality.
Cllr Kelsie Learney said:
“We have made a commitment to being a carbon neutral as a district - an ambitious target, but one we are determined to progress. We know it will take the effort from everyone, individuals, national and local government and organisations alike for us to achieve this. I am always pleased to take part in events like these, as the more we talk about the issues, the more we are bringing the challenges to the forefront. I encourage everyone to take part – no prior knowledge is needed and all are welcome.”
Cllr Learney joined several other speakers on the day which was full of interesting debate. The Winchester District Climate Assembly, follows the success of the Young People’s Climate Assembly in 2021.
and the form you need to fill in and return to the tribunal (called an ET3).
Deadlines - It is crucial to check the deadline on the letter for sending your ET3 to the tribunal. This will be 28 calendar days from the date the ET1 was sent to you.
Preparing to defend the claim - To defend your business as robustly as possible, we strongly recommend getting in touch as soon as you have received the claim. It is important that the detailed response to the claim (known as the grounds of resistance) is consistent with the paperwork that the tribunal examines later at the hearing. Collect and send us the relevant documents and emails so that we can ensure the response tallies with these.
How we can help - We act for businesses and individuals, giving us valuable insight into the pressures faced by both sides. Our experience means we will defend the claim in an effective and pragmatic way.

Winchester City Council invest in renewable energy project to drive down carbon emissions
In collaboration with Custom Solar, Enterprise M3, and Portsmouth City Council, Winchester City Council has installed solar panels at Biffa Winchester, in a bid to reduce carbon emissions and energy bills. Winchester City Council is supporting environmental initiatives, which includes building and investing in large-scale renewable generation projects in the district. Energy is one of the council’s four main priorities for its Carbon Neutrality Action Plan (CNAP), leading the council to install photovoltaic (PV) solar panels at Biffa to produce renewable energy. The PV panels will generate power being sold to Biffa at a discounted rate per kilowatt hour.
Custom Solar and Portsmouth City Council delivered the Winchester City Council depot project at Biffa, which involved the installation of a 60kWp system to Biffa HQ in Winchester, equating to 134 solar panels. The solar project, funded by Enterprise M3, will produce 51kWh and reduce 11 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually for the site. The project data suggests that the installation will supply an equivalent of approximately 15 homes with full electrical demand and fully charge 4,018,715 iPhone 12s.
Cllr Kelsie Learney, Cabinet Member for Climate Emergency, said: “I am thrilled to see the completion of the solar panel installation at Biffa, and proud that businesses in our district are becoming more sustainable by generating renewable energy for their buildings.
“Winchester City Council is determined to reduce its own carbon emissions, and that of the district. Supporting and driving environmental initiatives like this one will create big leaps towards meeting our carbon neutrality goals and being greener faster.”

Mr Mac - One to One Support for Apple Macs & Windows
Apple’s “key chain” is a powerful tool. You can retrieve any password you have saved on your Apple devices. You will find it in System Preferences on a Mac or in Settings > Passwords on an iPhone or iPad. You can also see any Wi-Fi passwords saved; you can only see these on a Mac when you are in System Preferences.
A new device for locking and unlocking your front door has been recently introduced and it works seamlessly in the Apple HomeKit app. There are many different types of door locks available that will work with your iPhone but this one is the easiest I have ever installed. In less than half an hour it was operational. It will work with most locks and keys and as it fits on the inside of the door no-ne will know you have it installed. More information is available from nuki.io or from Amazon. One of my favourite apps is Audible. For a monthly fee you can buy any of the latest titles available as well as free access to a large library of books to listen to including many classics. There are also free podcasts including the very amusing series of “Titting About” by Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders. My favourites listen this month has been David Dimbleby’s “Keep Talking”. He reflects on his 50 year career at the BBC taking us behind the scenes of some of the biggest moments in British broadcasting.

How invertebrates show the state of our chalk streams
In their nymph stage, stoneflies – or ‘Plecoptera’ – can be found clinging to the undersides of rocks where the streams are fastflowing. The adults have intricately patterned wings but tend not to be strong fliers, so will usually stay close to where they first left the water. Some species communicate by ‘drumming’ their abdomen on a solid surface; if they’re lucky, this display will win them a mate!
Caddisflies, or ‘Trichoptera’, are best known for their larval stage, when many species bind stones, leaves, shells, and sand together to form protective cases. These shelters are portable, allowing the larvae to crawl – and sometimes even swim – while inside. As adults, they have hairy wings like a moth, which they fold along their bodies when at rest, and can typically be seen sitting by the water.
If you’d like to help monitor these important species, there are a few ways to do so. The Riverfly Partnership hosts several projects that are suitable for groups, and citizen science initiatives for individuals. The Watercress and Winterbournes scheme also monitors riverflies in the Test and Itchen headwaters - email us at winterbournes@hiwwt.org.uk or explore our work at www.hiwwt.org.uk/winterbournes.
When it comes to the health of our local chalk streams, few animals are more crucial than invertebrates. As a major food source for fish, birds, and mammals, their presence – or absence – directly impacts other wildlife populations. Many are ecosystem engineers that shape their surroundings, and some are found only in the UK. Yet of the 724 aquatic insects known to be here, 11 have been lost and 68 more face extinction.
Because of their key role in chalk stream ecosystems, invertebrates are ‘canaries in the coal mine’ for the habitat at large. Three groups in particular – the ‘EPT species’ – are
invaluable for spotting problems, since all spend extended periods in the water and have unique sensitivities to different pollutants. This makes them excellent indicators of subtle, chronic pollution that may be missed by spot water sampling.
Mayflies, or ‘Ephemeroptera’, take their name from their short adult lifespans – mere hours in some cases. As nymphs, however, they can spend up to two years feeding on algae and plants in the water. Unusually among insects, they have two adult forms: the dull-coloured ‘dun’ and the clear-winged ‘spinner’ that follows. The adults often emerge en masse, creating an impressive spectacle.
Want to learn more about our precious chalk streams?
Online Talk - ‘Chalk Streams: Wonderful in Wintertime’ on the 6th December, 7 - 8pm, Free to attend. Join Susan Simmonds from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, as she explores the character of our chalk streams in the colder months. Ihave
A Letter from a Forum Reader
no affiliation to Sky Park Deer Farm just a dedicated and happy regular visitor – I lost my husband of 45 years during the pandemic and this place restores my soul and brings me so much joy. I give up some meals so that I can still go to park twice a week, it means that much to me…. I have NO affiliation to the place, owners or staff. I just write about it as I love it so very much and it is such a wonderful place for every one to go to.
Sky Park Deer Farm opened in May 2021 and is just the most amazing addition to our National Park. I have been visiting almost every Saturday and many Tuesdays since it opened and every visit still fills me with joy, peace and amazement. With three breeds of Deer, Red, Whie (which are really read deer!) and my absolute favourites the Sika, there is always something to see that is new. Being in our wonderful park it also has wildlife to spot and enjoy, many birds including wagtails, geese, swans and the amazing Red Kites may pass you as well as squirrels and at the right time of year the wonderfully bright dragon flies that love the river walk.
It has been amazing to see the whole life cycle of the deer population and the thrill of seeing the new calves (May – June) never fails to make you believe in the wonder of nature. The coats of these magnificent animals changes along with the seasons. I have watched the calves growing so fast, it is a wonder to me how fast they grow.
There are paths around the fields which are easy to follow and keep the whole experience accessible to all, wheelchairs and buggies included. You many need waterproof footwear some days like any walk in our countryside. There is also a river walk alongside the River Rother (which was very special to my late husband) with picnic benches which have amazing views over our great National Park.
You can buy a bag of food to feed the deer, my own little favourites, the Sika, are a little more timid, but I have a few now that come over when I call them (I have nicknamed, Dazzle, Basil, Razzle and Hazzel !) and will take feed from my hand, just they the Red Deer, and the thrill I get in my
dotage makes me feel like a kid again. Having been bereaved during the pandemic after 45 years together, this is my special place, a place I can forget the worries and just be happy and amazed with each visit. You really can get to know individual deer around the park and pick out the characters.
Alongside the Farm Experience is a visitor centre selling may ‘deer related’ items all of which are just brilliant.
Across the car park (free) is the Farm Shop and Grazing Rooms. These in themselves are worthy of a visit alone, Both the Shop and the Grazing rooms are very popular and at busy times you many need to wait for table(or book). They work hard at keeping the offerings high quality and local. With offerings to suit all tastes.
The staff are wonderful, friendly, always time to speak to visitors and they smile, a lot! Every member of staff is helpful and all really do want visitors to enjoy the park, the shopping, eating and most of all they care!
Everything at Sky Park has been done with the highest attention to detail and standards are very high.
I could write so much more, but why not go yourself. If ever you early and see a little old lady sat on a fold up stool – talking to the Sika – that will be me, stop and say hello – I am always happy to say hi and tell you more about this wonderful addition to our great South Downs National Park.
I will never tire of the park, it has helped me through bereavement, PTSD and has given me a reason every week to visit and keep the wonder and joy alive.

Pistachio and Mortadella Lasagne
SERVES FIVE Preparation time 1 hour 15 minutes
This recipe for lasagne combines the food flavours from both North and Southern Italy. It is a lighter and melt in the mouth experience than the traditional lasagne from Emilio Romagna which uses a beef ragout. Most of the ingredients can be bought at a good supermarket or deli. The Provolone cheese if necessary can be substituted using thinly sliced gouda.
For a perfect supper dish, pair it with a crisp green salad and a glass of Gavi di Gavi made from the Cortese grape.

Opinion piece: Let’s all work together to reconnect nature
Nature is incredibly adaptable and has amazing capacity to bounce back and respond to change, especially from human disturbance. In the conservation sector this is called ‘ecological resilience’. It is a concept we can all think about and build into wild spaces of our own, to some degree.
Building resilience across wild spaces can be achieved by even the smallest of natural areas. This is because it’s not just about a single contribution to natural recovery, it’s about collective areas and the network of ecological connections that can re-establish within and between them.
However big or small, allowing an area to recover for nature can be hugely beneficial for local wildlife and potentially more widely too. This could look like any number of things, such as relaxing pruning or mowing regimes for a season, thinking about wildlife corridors using hedges or bushes, creating wild spaces in out of the way areas (for example, unused parts of your garden) or even installing wildflower mats on a shed or garage roof to act as ecological steppingstones. The key is variability!
Adding a wide variety of different vegetation structures or a combination of ground and vegetation cover, which support varied native species or communities, is critical. The variability allows a mosaic of different habitats to recover, attracting a whole host of
diverse flora and fauna. It also supports ecological relationships like pollination, disease regulation and predation. These relationships are strengthened by the connections and linkages with other nearby areas. The closer a cluster of wild spaces are, and the more of them, the less resistance there is for wildlife to move around and the higher the capacity for expansion. Imagine an electrical circuit board with lots of multiple connections – just gradually growing and becoming a lot messier!
For conservation managers, our work centres around accelerating the recovery of nature. We do our best to divert and minimise the impacts of human activities, but we can also help speed up the recovery process; allowing nature to take the lead. For instance, the projects we oversee at Marwell Wildlife help restore natural processes by managing invasive species in open grasslands, supporting native tree regeneration in ancient woodlands and creating new areas on heathlands for the seed bank to recolonise
The protected areas we manage are all connected, sometimes closely, sometimes not, but allowing ease of movement throughout the landscape is important. This is key for ecological resilience and will ensure adaptability and ability to resist or bounce back.
We can all do the same in our own small areas: those pocket-sized corners of connectivity for wildlife. They all make a difference and help build a stronger network for nature and people. How will you help to reconnect nature?

Dr Martin Wilkie, Conservation Biologist at Marwell Wildlife, writes about how we can help to build ecological resilience.

When you say ‘carpet’ what do you mean? We mean average size areas, say 10x12ft ish. But we don’t quibble if the areas are a little larger - it’s all done on fairness really. 2. Do you move furniture? Our pricing policy reflects the time it takes to clean working around furniture, rather than moving it. That said, we are for example, happy to move your three piece suite backwards and forwards cleaning under it and replacing it back into position. What we don’t price into the job at these discount prices is moving large pieces of furniture like bookcases, sideboards or wardrobes. Similarly we are not insured to move electrical items, in particular flat-screen tvs. Again we apply common sense and fairness to the situation and inevitable we do end up moving some furniture around, even at these discount prices. 3. Are there any ‘hidden’ extra costs? The prices quoted above are fully-inclusive and are the actual prices you will pay. Upholstery we specialise in cleaning and refreshing 3 piece suites (at our current offer price of £97). Fabric Master, our special upholstery and cleaning system is safe, gentle, and very effective. Last year we raised an amazing total of £5,695 and, although we understand in the present economic climate, money is tight, we would love to equal that amount, or do even better.
HoHoHo!
Christmas is fast approaching, and plans are well underway to start pounding the streets with Father Christmas and “Roger” his trusty, brightly lit, musical steam train. As usual we will be visiting Waltham Chase, Bishops Waltham and Fair Oak starting on the week beginning Monday the 12th of December and continue through on weekday evenings until the following Friday, the 23rd of December. We will also be having a few static collections over the weekends of that period - Keep an eye on our website or Facebook page to find the dates when we will be visiting a street near you and hear
Because many of us no longer carry change around, you can donate via our website using the “Donate” button at the top of the front page, or you can text ROGER, followed by a number, to 70085, to donate that number in pounds i.e. ROGER 5 – will donate £5. Texts cost the value of the donation, plus one standard rate message and you’ll be opting in to hear more about our work and fundraising via telephone and SMS. Lend With Care
The wonderful thing about the Rotary Club of Fareham is that members ENJOY raising money for causes that are dear to them. The Rainbow Centre in Fareham, that supports
those with a neurological condition, needs an accessible roundabout for the children in their care and we hope to achieve that for them.
We have already completed a sponsored Rainbow Swim, this was followed by a Rainbow Cycle Ride (from the Rainbow Centre through France), and now it was time for a delicious fundraising night out with a Rainbow Dinner!
Antonio’s Spanish Restaurant in West Street Fareham is VERY special as the owner, Antonio Pego-Pineiro, is also a Rotarian with our Club. He very kindly hosted our fundraising meal last night which raised an amazing £518.79. We couldn’t have done it without him!
As Pam Marsden, President of the Rotary Club of Fareham, said “What better way to
Bishop’s Waltham Rotary Club is committed to helping with both local and international causes, and with this in mind we have allocated a small sum of money to be invested into Lendwithcare a Microfinance charitable scheme, which supports entrepreneurs living in low-income countries to start and expand small businesses with the aim of improving their quality of life. These businesses can range from launching a scrap recycling business to diversifying crops and everything in between - all they need is a helping hand to get started. The projects we have chosen to support are in 4 different countries, ranging from individuals trying to help their family to small groups helping their local community. The projects we are supporting range from small projects requiring £800 in total to more ambitious projects needing just short of £5000, with a Repayment Term ranging from 4 months to 36 months. We have loaned a total of £180, to 4 different projects covering Farming, Retail and Manufacturing, in Zambia, Ecuador, Thailand and Cambodia, and as the money is repaid, we will identify further projects and reloan the money to other schemes.

I know that children locally attending The Rainbow Centre will be so happy to use this roundabout, when we raise sufficient funds, and we have more events to come to achieve our aim!”
Diners generously donated raffle prizes and the gifts were stacked high! There was an auction of several special items including a round of golf for 4 at the Skylark Golf & Country Club along with many others.
