We had several quotes & design suggestions from other companies before meeting Ben. From the first meeting we were impressed with Ben’s understanding of our needs & he gave us excellent practical ideas. We particularly liked that he was able to show us samples there and then, without the need to visit a show room. Dan & Mitch (our fitters) were brilliant- they were friendly, respectful of our home, involved us in decisions along the way and, without doubt, made the process far less stressful than we imagined it would be! We have been recommending Happy Kitchens to everyone we’ve shown off our fantastic new kitchen to. Thanks so much guys - Mr Fog
At Happy Kitchens, we offer a wide range of makeover services ranging from replacement worktops, kitchen doors, splashbacks, hinges and wirework to new appliances and much more. We also offer new kitchen design and installation services too.

Wellbeing BREATHTAKING
T
here’s been a little buzz on our Facebook page recently over a clip we posted in April. It was simply an MRI image of a person breathing, but it has reached nearly half a million people and been shared thousands of times.Take a peek! What seems to have caught the attention is the very visual graphic, demonstrating not just the action of breathing, but the incredible massaging effect the diaphragm has on the organs above and below. The organs visibly rise and fall on breathing. This is something that I regularly both treat and teach about, and to have such a powerful image to demonstrate the power of the breath has really captured people’s imagination. Breathing is not just an exchange of gases, yet, as we do it subconsciously it is easy to think of it in such simple terms. Breathing has the potential to have profound effects on the nervous system, and the function of the organs above and below the diaphragm. Altered breathing mechanics are often the first sign of stress in our patients. It is important to remember that the stress message overrides every other message in the body. It is our ‘fight or flight’ mode, which historically helped save us from predators, but now is just continuously raised in response to our daily life stressors. Being in a state of stress stimulates the part of the nervous system called the Sympathetic Nervous System. This is all about survival, so the heart beats faster, the pupils dilate, the breathing quickens, blood is pumped to the brain and muscles, and digestion and reproductive hormones switch off. The other part of the nervous system is called the Parasympathetic Nervous System. This works at a slower rate and can be nick-named the ‘rest and digest’ mode. When it is activated digestion begins, the heart rate drops, the muscles relax, we de-stress and sleep well. However, they can’t work in tandem, and the ‘fight and flight’ mode will always win over the ‘rest and digest’ mode. To help manage stress we need to encourage the activation of the Parasympathetic Nervous system. Now here is the clever bit: when your out-breath is longer than your in-breath you activate your Parasympathetic Nervous System and switch off your Sympathetic Nervous System. So take a moment to assess how you breathe. Place one hand on your upper chest and one hand on your belly and breathe normally.Which hand is moving the most? For many of us the answer will be the top hand, as this is the quickest route to getting oxygen in when we are in stressed mode. This pattern of breathing becomes a learned habit under chronic stress, and the diaphragm and surrounding organs gradually become dysfunctional.
10
To stimulate the PNS we need to alter this breathing pattern, and a good way to start is to redirect the breath to the lower chest and lengthen the out-breath. Try this: 4/7 breathing • Sit or lie comfortably with one hand on your upper ribs and one hand on your lower ribs • Take a breath in for 4 seconds, pause, and then slowly let it out for 7 seconds. • As you breath in, direct the breath to your lower hand on the lower ribs and diaphragm. Really feel the 360° expansion of lower ribs, and try to keep your top hand still. • As you breath out really feel your ribs dropping and belly sinking in • Repeat this 10 times. Can you feel your out breath becoming more relaxed and longer as you go through the practice? • Do this morning and evening and any time you feel anxious, stressed or having trouble sleeping. As osteopaths, we love to treat breathing mechanics and the diaphragm, as its effects can be profound. Helping patients manage stress with both treatment and life skills can have such wide reaching effects, from balancing hormones, improving digestion, supporting the immune system and releasing aches and pains. Try the 4/7 Breathing practice regularly, and if you need further help with symptoms of stress, anxiety, hormonal imbalances, low immunity, aches and pains, and digestive dysfunction, just give us a call. Community CITIZENS ADVICE TEST VALLEY
C
itizens Advice Test Valley is a registered Charity which became incorporated in July 2014 and was formed following the merger of the Andover and Romsey Citizens Advice offices. The Chief Officer for the Test Valley is Ange Moon (pictured).
Andover Citizens Advice was opened in 1966 and has occupied various venues throughout the town before moving to 35 London Street, Andover in 2014. Romsey Citizens Advice was opened in 1976 and was formerly housed in the Town Hall before moving into the Former Magistrates Court, Church Street in 2014.
The work we do
Citizens Advice provides free, independent, confidential and impartial advice to everyone on their rights and responsibilities, across a broad range of subjects. We value diversity, promote equality and challenge discrimination. We aim to provide the advice people need for the problems they face and to improve the policies and practices that affect people's lives.
Staffing
Ninety percent of people working within the Citizens Advice Service are volunteers and work as assessors, advisers, administration staff, receptionists and Trustees. We have Welfare and Debt specialists in both offices. Both our offices are a Third Party Hate Crime Reporting Centre and we operate Hampshire Healthwatch.
Outreach
We have Outreach surgeries at King Arthurs Way, Whitchurch and North Baddesley which take our service to rural parts of our catchment area. We provide a home visiting service to those unable to access our service at our offices through disability or care responsibilities.
Funding
Test Valley Borough Council provides the major part of our funding. However, we also attend and organise fund-raising and profile raising events and look for extra grants wherever possible.
Contact us
You can access our service by a drop-in Gateway assessments Adviceline and email. Please visit our website: www. testvalleycab.org.uk or call 03444 111 306. Appointments can be made if appropriate, following a Gateway Assessment. 14
GODOLPHIN PREP IS PREPARING TO CELEBRATE ITS 25TH ANNIVERSARY IN THE COMING MONTHS
T
he school is expanding and an exciting new building project is already underway. This will provide the girls at the Prep with two new classrooms and a flexi-space which can be adapted for drama, music, indoor activities and collaborative learning. The first Head Girl of Godolphin Prep, Lucy Barnes, will be returning to the school as Guest Speaker at this year’s Speech Day. Lucy’s return will be the start of the 25th anniversary celebrations with many picnics and parties planned for the new academic year. It has become a tradition at Prep Speech Day to invite those girls from the Upper Sixth who started at the Prep to attend the event. This is the closing of the circle as the Upper Sixth girls attend their final day at Godolphin the following day. For the 25th anniversary celebrations, we will be inviting as many former Prep pupils back to see how the school has “grown up” over the past 25 years. B
ut for the programme notes, the audience (the Town Hall was packed) could have thought that this String Quartet had been playing as a group for some years. Not a bit of it. Three young players, already making their own separate marks in the tough, competitive world of classical music, had just completed an intensive ten day course to hone their skills with their leader, recording artist Arisa Fujita, the violin Professor at London’s Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the principal violin teacher at The Yehudi Menuhin School. The three works they played – String Quartets by Beethoven, Shostakovich and Brahms – all demand considerable intensity from the bow. And boy, was it delivered here. From the concert’s first note to the very last, a rich, fulsome sound filled the hall. The precise detail of exactly where the bow should be placed on the string, what pressure applied here, what gentle drawing across the string there; all this was evident. Beethoven’s Quartet in D Opus No.3 has a most beautiful beginning, a fitting start to the concert. Written in about 1799, this is the first of his many quartets (although confusingly numbered). Influenced by his teacher Haydn, its four movements are filled with ingenuity, cleverly contrived and crafted, the work’s ease and flow played with insight here. The 1938 Quartet by Shostakovich (No.1 in C Major) is filled with contrasts. Syncopation, quiet melody and comedy abound. In the second of the four movements the composer gives the viola a haunting, melancholic theme inspired by the Russian folksong tradition. This was played by Oscar Golch with great feeling. The work ends with extremely rapid note play from viola and cello, while the violinists hammer out C Major chords above. Evident enjoyment here from Golch, violinist Gabriella Jones, cellist Emma Bessalaar, and Fujita. The ultra perfectionist Brahms was prone to tearing up so much of his work until he was happy with it. He was forty before he published the C minor Quartet No.1 in 1873. And yet, as the Maiastra showed superbly, it’s awash with energy, power, lightness, colour, nobility and more. At times an orchestra is desperate to burst through the music. There are four Maiastra courses a year for advanced post-graduate students who plan most of their career in chamber music. The final part is always to play alongside their course leader in three public performances. Long may this endure. Words by James Montgomery

BRITTEN – WAR REQUIEM, THE ANVIL, BASINGSTOKE
L
ifelong pacifist Benjamin Britten was asked to compose his War Requiem for the consecration of the rebuilt Coventry Cathedral in 1962 after its destruction in World War II. The work weaves together the Latin Mass text of a traditional requiem with the devastating war poetry of Wilfred Owen to produce a powerful denunciation of the wickedness of war and a warning to future generations of the senselessness of taking up arms against one’s fellow man. 2018 marks the centenary of the end of the Great War, the “war to end all wars” according to H G Wells, and many choirs across the country will be giving performances of Britten’s timeless message of peace and denunciation of war in this year. Basingstoke Choral Society, Southampton Philharmonic Choir, Southampton University Philharmonic Choir and the City of Southampton Orchestra combine their considerable resources for this unique performance. They will be joined by a children’s choir from the Pilgrims’ School, Winchester, along with the internationally renowned London Mozart Players at the Anvil, Basingstoke on Saturday 9 June. Full details of the event can be found by visiting www.war-requiem2018.uk There will be a ‘Hampshire Remembers’ remembrance wall, where we extend an invitation to all participants to dedicate their attendance at the concert to anyone of any nationality adversely affected by any war by adding a personal message to the wall. “My subject is War, and the pity of War. The Poetry is in the pity… All a poet can do today is warn.” Wilfred Owen

around the countryside in summer I take care not to spend too long enjoying the roadside www.lawnmaster.co.uk verges. I find them so inspiring that I’m in danger of not looking at the road ahead. So many of our garden plants are descendants of our native flora that the term “weed” for any wildflower begins to sound ungrateful, if not downright insulting. But less troublesome wildflowers, such as meadow cranesbill, Geranium pratense, or wild daffodils, Narcissus pseudonarcissus, have been welcomed into our gardens and bred for colour, long flowering and other desirable qualities. Call SPENCER for a FREE lawn consultation
The atmosphere created by long grass and wildflowers is relaxed and can be used to contrast, and sometimes to emphasise, more formal features. A swathe of wildflower meadow can work well around the fringes of a country garden to blur the boundaries between the garden and pasture beyond. It can define shapes in a garden in the softest possible way and without generating the work involved in a formal border. Meadows change through the summer, brimming with white ox eye daisies and buttercups in May and June, and in late summer the pink flushed yarrow, purple knapweed and yellow of lady’s bedstraws or dyer’s greenweed. Even when the meadow has been cut, as it must be to prevent the vigorous grasses overwhelming the flowers, the shape remains. Concern about loss of wildlife habitats is another reason for introducing communities of native plants into our gardens. The Common Blue butterfly lays its eggs only on bird’s foot trefoil and the Marsh Fritillary must have plantain or devil’s bit scabious. Others are dependent on certain grasses and these contribute to the natural look of a meadow, resulting in that wonderful rippling in the wind. Perennial wildflower seed mixes are usually supplied with a large proportion of grasses to flowers to create a natural community which will continue interacting for many years, changing in emphasis from year to year as one species dominates another or is favoured or not by the weather. Some of our favourite wildflowers are annuals, or weeds of cultivation. The field poppy is the most spectacular, painting broad strokes of red TEST FORUM ISSUE 60.indd 27 around the margins of arable fields. To achieve a meadow of cornfield flowers the soil must be tilled annually to remove perennial plants and seeded with a cornfield mix. This will include many flowers rarely seen nowadays, such as the corn marigold, purple corn cockle, blue cornflower and, a favourite of mine, the wild pansy or heartsease as well as the field poppy. These plants grow fast, flower and seed themselves in one summer and make a brief but wonderful show. They are not particularly low maintenance but perfect for an almost instant effect. Why not start by leaving an area of lawn unmown to see what flowers may already be hiding there? www.catherinethomas.co.uk 22

twisting, thickening, elongation, and eventually death. The weed literally grows itself to death. Others target photosynthesis, the process where plants produce energy from sunlight. Blocking photosynthesis is only part of the story. When photosynthesis is blocked, highly toxic oxygen and other compounds form within the plant. These compounds rapidly destroy cell membranes, causing the weed to die. Many selective herbicides target enzymes within plant cells. Enzymes allow complex chemical reactions to occur. When herbicide targets an enzyme it disrupts the sequence of complex chemical reactions, producing highly toxic compounds in the plant and killing the weed. So why don't selective herbicides kill the useful plants we are trying to grow? The main reason is because the useful plants are able to metabolise (break down) the herbicide more rapidly than the weeds, allowing them to survive.
When to use weed killers
W
hen I first began studying plant science I remember a tutor asking me; ‘Kenyon, when is a daffodil a weed’? The answer it seemed was simpler than I knew at the time. Weeds can be described as any plant growing in an area where it is not wanted. If that daffodil is in your rose-bed it might be considered a weed. If your lawn grass is in your flower-bed it most certainly is a weed. You must hold a suitable qualification as a paid professional applying pesticide to control weeds. If you ask your regular gardener to do it, and she doesn’t hold a licence, then you are both breaking the law. The general code of practice covering the use of pesticides states that you should attempt other forms of control before you start to use pesticides to control a weed issue. Weeds can be relatively small like clover, or large like thistles. They are typically fast growing and spread rapidly, impacting on plant growth in and around them. Weeds are characterised as narrow leafed like grasses, broad-leafed liked dandelions or woody like brambles. Large weeds can often be removed by hand, but removing smaller weeds from your lawn may require an effective pesticide. Pesticides used for treating weeds are often called herbicides. There are two types of herbicides; selective herbicides control only certain types of weeds, typically either broad-leafed or grass-like weeds. Nonselective herbicides control and kill all plant types with which they come into contact. The application of a broad-leaf herbicide will affect and control the growth of broad-leaf plants. As such, this herbicide can usually be applied onto existing lawns, but will control only broadleaf weeds. A grass herbicide controls the growth of grass type plants. Grass herbicides can safely be applied to flower beds and will have no impact on broadleaf plants, but will control and impact on grasses.
How weed killers work
Some work by disrupting the fine balance of biochemical processes that occur within the plant. Often causing uncontrolled growth,
Herbicides are most effective on actively growing plants, as the active ingredient is carried by the sap of the plant. The faster the plant is growing, the quicker the solution will be moved through the plant. Application during less active growth periods are also effective, however the results will take longer.
How to use
Weed plants fall into different families. Much like sprouts and cabbage are different plants but within the same group of plants, some weeds are in the same family group and some in different groups. Certain plant groups are susceptible to certain herbicides that other groups might not be affected by. Identifying what weed you need to kill, understanding which plant group it is in and what pesticide needs to be used to treat that specific group is the key to weed killing success. All herbicides have application rates. Much like medication you take at home has a recommended dose. Exceed the dose and you may cause issues, take too little and there may be no effect. Getting the dose right isn’t just about how much you pour out of the bottle, it’s also about how much water you add to the mix and how much of the mix is applied to the weed.
Is one application enough?
If you select the correct herbicide for the weed you aim to kill, use the correct dose rate and apply at the right time then often one application is enough. However some weed varieties are more resilient than others. Some have thick leaf coatings or hairs that reduce the contact of the droplets of pesticide that have been sprayed on the weeds. Some weeds are persistent and are not controlled after only one application and several, consecutive applications are recommended. Applications may be necessary throughout the growing season and should continue until the weeds have been successfully controlled. Failing to do so may increase the weed’s resistance to the type of pesticide used – much like the risks of not finishing a course of antibiotics. Often additives can be used along with the pesticide to increase the efficacy of the chemicals present. Remember, weeds are fast growing and quick to set and disperse seed. These seeds germinate to form new weeds, so regular herbicide applications are essential. It’s relatively complex, which is why you need to study for an exam to carry a licence to use pesticides. Community Home TEST VALLEY BUSINESS AWARDS NOW IS THE TIME FOR JUDGING
F
ollowing one of its most successful years in the initiative’s 14 year history; seeing almost 100 people gather together in rural Stockbridge for the official launch, and 5 entrants picked at random to receive an assortment of local treats – including a day’s fishing courtesy of Leckford Estate - the Test Valley Business Awards entry period is closed and the 2018 entries are being prepared for the judges. This year’s entrants had the opportunity to enter any one of the Awards’ six diverse categories, including: • Innovation & Technology Award – sponsored by The University of Southampton Science Park • New Business of the Year Award – sponsored by Test Valley Borough Council • Doing Business Locally Award – sponsored by Taylored IT • Small Business of the Year Award – sponsored by Wilkins Kennedy • Employer of the Year Award – sponsored by Simplyhealth • Businesswoman of the Year Award Between 25th May and 2nd July, this year’s 6 Gold Sponsors will judge the entries in their particular award category; having the difficult job of picking their finalists. Now in its 14th year, the Test Valley Business Awards – run by a steering group of volunteers – has become a well-established platform to champion business excellence. It is a great way of shining a light particularly on the many new and small businesses in the region, all doing interesting and valuable work, but often out of sight. COUNCIL INVESTMENT INITIATIVE CONTINUES ITS SUCCESS
CHOIR MARKS WW1 CENTENARY
A
local chamber choir is commemorating the end of World War 1 a hundred years ago with a reflection in words and music at St Mary’s Church, Andover on Saturday 14th July. The Harmonium Singers are well known for their thoughtful programmes of smaller-scale choral music often combined with powerful words. ‘Beyond War, Music of Peace’ will be no exception and promises to be a moving experience. The main work in the programme will be John Rutter’s Requiem, accompanied by a small, high-quality instrumental ensemble. Other music will feature music by composers directly affected by the war, either as active participants, or influencers of that generation and those influenced by them. Hence there will be music by Stanford, Parry (who died in 1918), lesser known composers like Edgar Bainton and Patrick Hadley, and inevitably some unfamiliar names whose careers were cut short. The choir’s own fundraising means that the costs of putting on the concert have largely been met already. Ticket money will therefore go to the military charity Combat Stress. The choir’s musical director Bruce Randall explains: ‘In 2014 we marked the centenary of the start of the Great War with the Fauré Requiem, and other music interspersed with words from the trenches. Four years on we have a rather different angle, looking at the lives of affected composers, and a different Requiem. It should be a very thought-provoking and memorable event for the town. And we believe it will be a fitting commemoration in this military area, while directly benefiting military personnel in need.’ The performance begins at 7.30pm in the inspiring setting of St Mary’s Church, Andover. Tickets are £10 in advance from Newbury Building Society, The Lights and choir members, or £12 at the door. Further information: Veronica Bacon 01264 771285 www.harmoniumsingers.org.uk 34
T
est Valley Borough Council’s Project Enterprise programme continued to reap benefits throughout 2017/18. The property investments purchased through the initiative, which aims to increase the income generated from the council’s investments and reduce its reliance on the Government Revenue Support Grant, generated rental income in excess of £1.5M during the year. This provides an average return on investment of 7.2 per cent. Finance portfolio holder, Councillor Peter Giddings, said: “Since 2014, the council has invested in a number of projects that have sought to generate additional revenue income. This additional income has been generated by investing the cash reserves held by the council in projects that will yield greater returns than the authority would have received from the money simply sitting in the bank. In 2017/18, this equated to an additional £1.2M. “With diminishing funding from central government, councils across the country are becoming more entrepreneurial and more creative with how they manage and invest their money. Test Valley is no exception and we have sought to stay ahead of the game with the Project Enterprise initiative. I am pleased to say that this approach has proved successful.” Investment properties purchased during the past year included Andover Trade Park, the development of two houses in Andover High Street, and house purchases on Spey Court and Tintagel Close, Andover. The amount of investment in completed projects at 31 March 2018 was £26.519M, of which £7.769M was completed in 2017/18. The council has commenced or approved four further property projects, with a total budget of £6.232M for 2018/19. If the income levels received in 2017/18 continue and the latest completions generate income in line with their business case, rental income in 2018/19 is expected to be around £1.89M. This level of income would reflect an average return on investment of 7.1 per cent. In addition to the expenditure on investment property, the Project Enterprise initiative also seeks to identify suitable renewal energy investments. As a result, the council installed a number of solar panels at its Portway depot in 2017. www.testvalley.gov.uk
