award winning kitchen makeovers

After Makeover

Upto 50% cheaper than a new fitted kitchen Mrs Barnell approached Happy Kitchens with a challenge. The current layout and look of her kitchen was not working, and many other companies were put off by the fact the kitchen was on the first floor and in a town house just off Winchester High Street, so parking was an issue. Not for Happy Kitchens though, we were by far the best quote for the quality and came up with the best design, leading to the kitchen pictured above installed in less than 7 days. At Happy Kitchens, we offer a wide range of makeover services ranging from replacement worktops, kitchen doors, splashbacks, hinges and wirework to new appliances and much more. We also offer new kitchen design and installation services too.

Wellbeing CONFIDENCE

ACTION AGAINST DESTRUCTIVE DEVELOPMENT EASTLEIGH INVITES YOU TO ATTEMPT A GUINNESS WORLD RECORD ATTEMPT

C

onfidence is not a social flair that some have and others lack. It is the threshold in everyone where you cross over from believing you can’t cope, to knowing you can. You can’t happily stand up and give a wedding speech to hundreds of guests if you are thinking of all the ways you could muff it. But when you can draw on a range of previous experience, when you have something you want to say, and when you are having fun with friends, you see the situation as an opportunity, not an ordeal. Anxiety and confidence work like a see-saw: as one goes up, the other goes down. When you are confident, you can meet difficulties with resilience, even with gusto. But as soon as any threat seems greater than your ability to deal with it, your anxiety increases and your selfesteem plummets. Whenever you find yourself feeling helpless to do anything about a bad situation – such as ill health, declining sight or hearing, not having enough money, interpersonal conflict or frustration at work – up goes your anxiety, down goes your confidence. To tip the balance the other way, you need to decrease the seeming enormity of the problem, while increasing your conviction that you can handle it.

Here are three immediate ways to scale down a problem from overwhelming to manageable:

- Acknowledge the situation as difficult, painful or exhausting, perhaps: but as a work in progress. Not as catastrophic, shameful or beyond repair. - Put the problem in perspective. What is more important? What is still ok? - Make a plan. A series of small steps is achievable.

Here are three immediate ways to scale up your ability to cope:

- Take five minutes to do the ‘Five Things’ exercise: What five things do you see? What five sounds. do you hear? What five sensations do you notice in your body? Come to your senses! It is much easier to relax and see things in perspective when you pay attention to here and now. - Encourage yourself. Think: ‘I can handle this.’ At the very least: ‘I am willing to try.’ - Move. Do one thing right away that is better than nothing. Your mind has an inexhaustible capacity to learn, change and see things differently. ‘Yes, I can’ is a simple statement of fact. www.annapowell.com 6

ction Against Destructive Development Eastleigh campaigners are trying a different tactic in their battle against building a relief road and too many new homes by attempting to enter the Guinness World Records by dressing

up as trees.

Members of the ADD are encouraging residents to take part in the event at Stoke Park Junior School in Bishopstoke on July 7 at 1.30pm. They aim to break the current record of 1,000 people dressed up as trees, which was set in Mumbai, India. The group is campaigning against the proposed plans to build 5,200 new homes near ancient woodland between Bishopstoke and Fair Oak. The plans were recently backed by civic chiefs in Eastleigh who said their choice was “the most logical option”. Charlotte Adcock, who organised the event, says: “We have organised this fun event to get the community involved but also to draw attention to the irreversible environmental damage that would be caused by the Eastleigh Local Plan.” “The plan threatens the local area as a whole, but in particular the seven remaining areas of ancient woodland within our district, and the precious ecosystem of the world-renowned River Itchen.” “We hope as many people as possible will come dressed up and join us. Getting into the Guinness Book of World Records would certainly put Bishopstoke on the map!” As per Guinness guidelines, residents have to wear dark brown trousers, green top and headdress with branches and leaves on. Alternatively, those taking part can design their own head-to-toe tree costume. This will need to be pre-agreed a few weeks in advance by Guinness officials and to get involved email support@addeastleigh.org or call: 07775 693994

his charming detached period house has recently been completely renovated by Hazeley Developments as part of an exclusive project of just five homes in this superb village location. The comprehensive work has resulted in a house which has all the advantages of a new property but within a traditional, period exterior with beautiful tall bay windows flanking the central front door. This is a great opportunity to enjoy the best of rural living

with the benefit of having the bustling market town of Romsey on your doorstep. The house has accommodation extending to almost 2000 sq ft over two floors and Hazeley Developments has responded to the demands of today’s purchasers and has cleverly incorporated popular open plan living as well as having separate reception areas. Well proportioned rooms throughout include the open plan kitchen and the sitting room which both have French doors opening to the south facing garden. There is also a good sized second reception room, which could be used as a study, formal dining room or playroom. The utility room and cloakroom add to the practicality of the home.

The Forum talks with Mark and Jenni Taylor of the recently opened The Little Whisky Shop, Stockbridge

A

part from fly-fishing there is now a new gentle art to discover in Stockbridge, that of whisky tasting. As Mark Taylor, the owner of The Little Whisky Shop, explains “There can be no doubt that whisky distilling is an art form and the people that create the different tastes and expressions are highly skilled”. Mark’s journey to the opening of The Little Whisky Shop on the high street in Stockbridge on June 5th is as rich and varied as the whiskies he has in his shop. After a twenty-year career in the army he moved into developing and marketing software for the energy industry and still owns his highly successful company VuePoint Solutions Ltd based in Andover. “At VuePoint Solutions Ltd we are lucky to have a professional and reliable team, along side my role there I wanted a new challenge. I have been interested in whisky for many years and have my own small collection; Jenni and I had been thinking about opening a specialist whisky shop for a while but couldn’t find suitable premises. We agreed that Stockbridge was the place to be, what happened next was nothing short of fate. The Test Valley Forum arrived and when Jenni passed it over it fell open at a page advertising the shop for rent! I phoned immediately and the owner said although the shop had been leased it had that moment just fallen through so we could have it!” Mark and Jenni have enlisted the help of ‘La Di Da Interiors’ who have created a beautiful bespoke design for the shop with a subtle blend of hues that mirror the Scottish landscape. “We wanted to create a space that is relaxing, whisky shouldn’t be rushed!’ Mark explains,” At The Little Whisky Shop we will offer frequent whisky tastings of our rich and varied specialist whiskies which include those from Ireland, Australia, the Far East as well as Bourbons and Ryes from the USA and obviously a huge selection from very best of Scottish whisky.” It may seem odd to have whiskies from the Far East? “The Japanese are particularly good at making whisky and are prolific buyers and collectors. They, along with the Chinese, are largely responsible for pushing up the price of collectable whiskies. So if a collector whishes to find a particular whisky or would like to sell collectors whisky then we will happily provide that service both here at The Little Whisky Shop or through our website.” I wonder how old some of the whiskies displayed are “The oldest one we have currently is forty years old, then thirty –seven years and many more at between ten and twenty years old. That’s the beauty of Whisky – it matures and mellows with age though there is a little lost to the angels through natural evaporation whilst in the cask.” Does Mark have a favourite? “No not really, whilst I am an Islay fan, there is a whisky for every single mood so I simply match the whisky to the way I feel or the time of year, and whether I drink it with water, neat or with ice will be dependent on that.” If you would like to beat the angels at their game and sample a little heaven here on earth, then visit The Little Whisky Shop in Stockbridge. Trout 'n About

T

Sunday 5th August

rout ‘n About is a thriving local food festival which takes place in the market town of Stockbridge on the first Sunday of August every year. With over 100 stalls showcasing the very best of local food, produce and crafts, it is a great family fun day out – you can even hop on an old 1964 King Alfred Bus to get right to the centre of the action from the free car parks at either end of the high street! The festival is a great fun, free day out with something to enjoy for all ages. Children can visit the Kids Zone on the football field, complete with Juggling Jake, face painting, Test Valley Arts bus and kids rides, whilst adults can sample delicious produce as they sip on a cider and tap their feet to some excellent live music. New for 2018, we’ve even got a ‘mock wedding’ happening throughout the day in the courtyard behind The Vine – an excellent collaboration between the surrounding shops to demonstrate how much of your wedding planning you could get done just on Stockbridge High Street! Stockbridge is a wonderful town to visit; great shops, pubs, restaurants and lovely walks through the local countryside and along the famous River Test. The wide high street and market town history lends itself perfectly to a big street trading event such as Trout ‘n About.

16

The event is a not-for-profit enterprise and runs entirely on a volunteer committee, sponsorship from local businesses and a mass of volunteers on the day. The festival commenced in 2008 as an initiation by Stockbridge Area Partnership (SAP) in response to demand for a local foodies event, and it has organically grown from there due to the support of the local community, volunteers and stallholders keen to return.

Trout ‘n About has four main objectives: • • • •

To promote regional quality food, produce, local crafts and provide a platform for local businesses To raise money to support the local community To raise the profile of Stockbridge and celebrate its market history To provide an enjoyable event for the wider community and visitors

One of the key attractions of Trout ‘n About is being able to show the public what fantastic produce and fare they can source from the local area, and what amazing works are being created. Seeing all the producers and artisans together really is something very special. These events are also therefore platforms for local businesses to meet and engage with new crowds and hopefully pick up some new customers! Trout ‘n About 2018 is on Sunday 5 August from 10am – 4pm and we look forward to seeing you there!

est Valley Borough Council’s Community Governance Review consultation is well underway. The council is currently considering whether existing parish arrangements in any part of the borough should be changed. A Child’s Prayer, by the Scottish composer James MacMillan, written in response to the 1996 Dunblane tragedy was also sung beautifully by two sopranos from the church’s west end, accompanied by the choir in the east.

CANTORUM AT ST PETER’S CHURCH ON

Index Cantorum’s membership may have changed since Mr Williams founded the choir thirty years ago, but the philosophy hasn’t – themed concerts of the highest standards. Caledonian Connexions was a fine example.

his concert, called Caledonian Connexions, proved full of contrasts, twists and turns. Choral music that intrigued and enlightened at one. Obviously the theme was Scotland – mostly by association. As Index Cantorum’s founder and director Mark Williams described in the programme, through the evening we’d hear anything from Scottish composers and those inspired by Scotland, music for Royal courts, folksong, contemporary music, and works from the Renaissance – eighteen pieces in all, some short, some longer. Scotland’s greatest 16th century composer was Robert Carver. To open the concert, Mr Williams sang an ancient tune, L’Homme Armé, on which many composers at the time based their works, including Carver with his Mass of the same name. The choir performed its Gloria. This is beautiful music that warms the soul, with long phrases, ornamentation and wide compass between the treble and bass parts. Equally first class singing in the first half expressed ably grief and anguish in the Scottish-born Robert Ramsey’s How are the mighty fallen in his setting of David’s lament from the Book of Samuel at Jonathan’s death. Many harmonic suspensions and musical false-relations here. We enjoyed a charming rare secular Scottish part-song by that great musical survivor of four reigns, Tallis; a poignant anonymous Scottish Lament:; and a couple of short madrigals, one by a certain Cipriano de Rore, an innovative composer with a dramatic style expressive of the text, who influenced later developments in the madrigal. The choir relished the 16th century tribute to St Andrew, Scotland’s Patron Saint, by the Flemish composer Thomas Crecquillon. His Andreas Christi famulus, is a supreme piece of sustained eight-part writing. They romped through a hunting song full of musical imagery by the Scotland enthusiast Mendelssohn. They sang the much loved Ave Maris Stella by Grieg (his great grandfather was Scottish), and a group of traditional folksongs, one of which was the pastoral love song Ca’ the yowes (drive the ewes to the hills) arranged by Vaughan Williams. This was a truly special performance, a solo tenor’s voice filling the church accompanied by chorale style chords.

O

n Wednesday 30 May Stockbridge Community Cinema hosted film director Dominic Cooke, who's new film, On Chesil Beach, was screened at Stockbridge Town Hall to an audience of nearly 100 people. Dominic and the film’s two producers, Elizabeth Karlsen and Stephen Woolley stayed after the film for a lively Q&A session with the audience. The event was the result of a collaboration between the Community Cinema and The Bookmark – Stockbridge’s new independent bookshop, owned by Elaine Sperber who enlisted the help of Nick Manzi to organise the event because of his role as Head of Production and Acquisitions at Lionsgate, the film distributors of On Chesil Beach.

(L-R) Elizabeth, Dominic and Stephen

The event would not have happened if it hadn’t been for a chance discussion in The Bookmark between Elaine Sperber and Paul Kidd (Manager of Stockbridge Community Cinema). When Elaine made the offer to show the film locally during May this was a fantastic offer for Stockbridge Community Cinema as it was only due for nationwide cinema release that same month. Paul said “We had already organised our summer season programme but hastily reorganised it when given the opportunity not only to show this film but to have the director and producers present to answer questions from the audience afterwards. Not surprisingly the event sold out two weeks before the screening date and was a great success with many interesting questions being put to the panel. We hope to do this type of event again in future”. www.stockbridgecinema.org.uk 22

edges are the structural plants which can give a garden its definition and form. Whether formal or informal a hedge can provide the subdividing walls of our gardens. Sometimes we need them to screen a road or provide privacy from the neighbours but there is so much more they can offer. Hedges may be closely clipped evergreens or loose and informal like roses. The feeling in the enclosed space will be completely different depending on which you choose. For a formal look, choose evergreens with small leaves or needles, ideally dark in colour. Yew has almost black needles with a matt, non reflective quality which tends to recede visually. It makes a fabulous back drop to light coloured plants or sculpture in front of it. These evergreen hedges provide permanent structure throughout the seasons, whilst showier plants perform dramatically then “rest” like unemployed actors. Flowering plants can make lovely fragrant hedges with a soft informal effect. Rosa rugosa has disease free, fresh green leaves and heavily scented pink or white flowers throughout the summer. In the autumn, the leaves turn butter yellow lit up by hips the size of cherry tomatoes. Osmanthus delavayii or O. burkwoodii can give you the best of both worlds with small dark evergreen leaves and scented jasmine-like flowers.

trees grown bare stemmed to up to one or two metres then branches are trained horizontally and tightly pruned. The effect is strongly linear and highly fashionable. Traditionally, hornbeam and lime trees were used but designers and nurseries are experimenting with flowering and fruiting trees. Planting a hedge is an investment which will richly reward you – it is truly an investment that grows. Catherine Thomas Landscape and Garden Design Tel: 01722 339936 www.catherinethomas.co.uk

IT’S THIRSTY WORK FOR A LAWN DURING THE SUMMER; LET’S LOOK AT THE PROBLEMS AND HOW WE CAN HELP.

Y

in order to correctly diagnose the problem. If you have patches of brown on your lawn speak to a professional who will be able to help put it right. Water in a morning to reduce fungal risk. Acidity Grass plants require a neutral pH level to enable them to access available nutrients. High pH could well be a contributing factor to grass browning once it becomes stressed from high temperature and low rainfall. Ask a professional to take soil samples and test the pH. If necessary a correctional treatment plan will address the pH balance and give your lawn the opportunity to thrive.

ou may be wondering why your lawn turns brown in the summer and what you can do to help it remain healthy throughout the warmer months.

Drought and heat When temperatures rise and rain doesn’t fall lawn grasses become dormant. Brown grass leaves are a good indicator that your lawn is beginning to suffer from drought. The plant protects itself from death by withdrawing available moisture to the roots, causing leaf die-back. When moisture returns the lawn will soon recover, however you may want to water your lawn so you can enjoy its lush and healthy appearance throughout the summer season. Insects Lawns support a variety of insects, most are beneficial.Your lawn could be under attack from its two greatest pests. The first is the chafer grub; the young of the cock-chafer beetle. The second is the leather jacket; the young of the crane fly. Both of these pests damage the roots of grass plants and can be a cause of die-back during times of heat and water stress, when the lawn struggles to compete with its hungry nemesis. Correct nutrition and treatment plans will keep this problem under control. When and how to water The biggest mistake made when watering a lawn is too-little, toooften. To help your lawn to become more drought resistant add enough water to encourage a deep root run so grass is more capable of finding water in the soil when things dry up. A good nutritional plan will also promote healthy root growth reducing the need to water. To green up a browning lawn add one inch of water once a week. If you simply want to ensure you lawn doesn’t die completely during a severe drought add half-an-inch of water every two weeks. To measure how much you are watering simply place a container on the lawn under the sprinkler spray and time how long it takes to fill. Repeat that time as you move the sprinkler around your lawn. Alternatives to watering Science is a wonderful thing and a number of products have been developed for the management of tennis courts, golf and bowling greens. These products, not available on the high-street, can help to improve the water retaining ability of your lawn. Help to make grass plants more drought resistant, and greatly improve the appearance of your lawn during dry periods. Speak to a lawn care professional for more information; you may be surprised how effective and affordable this is compared to running up a large water meter bill. Fungal disease Warmth and moisture can help promote fungal attack of your lawn grasses. Brown patches on your lawn may be an indicator that your lawn is under attack. Watering and moisture from dew add to the problem. Early diagnosis followed by the relevant treatment is essential. It’s important to examine the area of grass around that which is dying

28

Doggy doo – doggy don’t! If a dog uses your lawn as a toilet then the nitrogen and other compounds in the dog urine can cause grass scorch. This is especially noticeable during periods of dry weather as the rain isn’t washing the urine through the soil and diluting it. There are products on the market to help reduce the impact of dog urine on your lawn if you think it might be a part of the problem. What’s hiding beneath? Do you really know what’s below that area of brown grass in your lawn? Might there be something under the surface preventing roots from become well-established? At other times of year the grass plants can cope with these obstructions, but once you introduce the stresses of heat and drought only those plants that are healthy and receiving the right nutrition will survive. Mowing and nutrition Mowing your lawn at the correct height throughout the season will greatly help it when the weather presents challenging conditions. If your lawn is correctly mowed, has a weed and feed treatment programme in place and has fungal issues treated correctly to ensure it is healthy, then it will be capable of coping with the stresses of drought and heat. A lawn that is already suffering from stress before the challenging weather arrives will fair less well. Speak to a lawn care professional to ensure your lawn looks its best throughout the year and is something you can enjoy and be proud of. Ian Kenyon owns Shrekfeet Lawn and Garden Services. WINCHESTER HAT FAIR 2018

H

at Fair is the UK’s longest running festival of outdoor arts. Founded in 1974 by Jonathan Kay. Our aim is to shine a light on the city, of Winchester by transforming the everyday into the extraordinary.

• Hassle free 24/7 unlimited access • Secure with alarm & CCTV • Range of unit sizes • Commercial or Private use • Convenient location • Short or long term • Undercover unloading • Friendly & family run

Initially conceived as a busking festival, Hat Fair takes its name from the tradition of the audience showing their appreciation by putting money in the hat at the end of the show. These days most of the festival’s artists are paid a fee to perform for free to our audiences. However, we still uphold the hatting tradition by inviting a dozen or so of the world’s best street performers to ‘hat’ at the festival each year – we offer a contribution to their travel costs and provide food and accommodation for them during the festival, but they are primarily paid through the generosity of our audiences. Friday & Saturday – Two jam-packed dates of arts and culture all around Winchester city centre. Sunday – All-day family picnic at North Walls Recreation Ground, with some of the world’s most spectacular street performers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here’s a selection of frequently asked questions especially for you sceptics (you know who you are). 1. When you say ‘carpet’ what do you mean? We mean average size areas, say 10x12ft ish. But we don’t quibble if the areas are a little larger - it’s all done on fairness really. 2. Do you move furniture? Our pricing policy reflects timecarpets it takes to clean working around furniture, rather than moving it. Have anythe three That said, we are for example, happy to move your three piece suite backwards and forwards cleaning and your three piece under it and replacing it back into position. What we don’t price into the job at these discount prices is moving large pieces of freshened furniture likeup bookcases, sideboards or wardrobes. Similarly we are not insured suite for to move electrical items, in particular flat-screen tvs. Again we apply common sense and fairness to the just £167! situation and inevitable we do end up moving some furniture around, even at these discount prices. 3. Are there any ‘hidden’ extra costs? The prices quoted above are fully-inclusive and are the actual prices you will pay.

MBE HONOUR FOR TEST VALLEY MAYOR IAN CARR

MEET THE TEST VALLEY BUSINESS AWARDS 2018 SILVER SPONSORS

W

ith the Test Valley Business Awards 2018 judging in full swing, seeing the Awards’ Gold Sponsors busily considering 223 entries across their 6 categories, now is the time to meet the Awards’ generous Silver Sponsors; representing a cross-section of some of the most established and inspiring businesses from across the borough. Bringing businesses together to network, form lasting relationships, and celebrate achievements, the Test Valley Business Awards is made possible only by the support of local businesses such as this year’s Silver Sponsors.

The Test Valley Business Awards 2018 Silver Sponsors are: • Bulpitt Print Ltd. • Langdowns DFK • Myddelton & Major • Webkick Ltd.

David Smith of Myddelton & Major commented of sponsoring the 2018 Test Valley Business Awards: “Myddelton and Major are very supportive of the Test Valley Business Awards as it highlights the great endeavours and enterprise undertaken by so many flourishing businesses in the Test Valley. The awards is a fitting occasion when outstanding businesses are recognised for their achievements.” Now in its 14th year, the Test Valley Business Awards – run by a steering group of volunteers – has become a well-established platform to champion business excellence. It is a great way of shining a light particularly on the many new and small businesses in the region, all doing interesting and valuable work, but often out of sight. M

ayor and former Leader of Test Valley Borough Council (TVBC), Councillor Ian Carr, has been given an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours. The award recognises his services to local government and the community after he served as leader of TVBC for almost two decades. He stepped down in May 2017 and is currently serving as mayor. He said: “I was in complete shock when I opened the letter. It is obviously an incredible honour and one I really didn’t expect. Throughout my time as leader I genuinely sought to serve the community to the best of my ability and I hope to continue this as mayor.” Current leader of Test Valley Borough Council, Councillor Phil North, said: “Ian has worked tirelessly for the benefit of Test Valley residents during his long period of service on the council - and this honour is thoroughly deserved. Having led the council since May 2017, I have an even greater respect for the job Ian did over 18 years.” Some of the highlights during his time as Leader include the acquisition of Fishlake Meadows as an area for the public to enjoy ecological pursuits and informal recreation. He also oversaw the purchase of The Lights theatre, the Andover Leisure Centre site and Former Magistrates’ Court. In addition, he fought to secure £2.6M from the Enterprise M3 LEP and other funding for the construction of Andover College’s Future Skills and Technology Centre. Over the past few years Andover has seen the delivery of two community halls, a 25 hectare Urban Park, dozens of sports pitches, two large sports pavilions and over 30 hectares of parkland and informal recreational space. In Romsey, the new community hall, pitches, pavilion and area of nature conservation at Abbotswood will be complemented by Ganger Farm becoming a hub for Romsey’s sporting infrastructure and home to a consortium of local clubs. Its vast facilities will include grass pitches, floodlit astro pitches, a massive sports pavilion and other vital sporting accommodation. Councillor Carr was elected as a borough councillor in 1987 and has held many committee roles over the years. He was also mayor of Test Valley in 1995/96. He served as leader of TVBC from May 1999 until his retirement from the role in May 2017, making him the longest serving councillor in this role. He became deputy mayor in May 2017 and mayor in May 2018. He is the first councillor on Test Valley Borough Council to hold a separate second term.
