Alresford Show B
TICHBORNE PARK, ALRESFORD
ack in the Spring, a famous weekly farming magazine ran an article about the surging popularity of agricultural shows. This raised a few eyebrows here at the Alresford Agricultural Show HQ where (and we hesitate to sound smug) we count our blessings every year as we survey the beautiful Tichborne Park on the first Saturday in September; it’s a splendid rural scene, and we fully expect to see it once again this year, on the first of the month.
It will be a magnificent sight. The parkland will be chock full of farm machinery – everything from the shiniest modern sat-nav guided combine harvester to vintage kit that predates GPS by a dozen decades. Some of the old machines will be sweetly putt-putting their way round the ring, some rural behemoths will be blacking out the hoped-for Autumnal sun as they throb their way round the arena. There will be farm livestock of all sorts: some of it big, some of it small, some of it old, some of it a more recent arrival in the English countryside. Each and every animal will be polished and pampered, ready for the show ring, accompanied by a proud handler just desperate to answer your questions. The quieter rural crafts like horticulture and beekeeping will be well represented, too – horticulture, bee-keeping and a hundred others tucked away in a peaceful corner of the show ground.
6
You might not want peace and quiet. You might to feast on local food, quaff local ale, have an undignified boogie to a couple of bands, learn to juggle, cuddle a beagle and bet on a ferret race – if that’s your idea of the perfect day out, it’ll all be there.
But most importantly, our visitors will be there. If the Met Office Muppets are right, we farmers will have finished harvest thanks to the promised long hot summer. We’ll be there, having a good moan if harvest was bad, and probably doing the same if it was good (it’s what we do best, after all).
Best of all, though, will be farming’s customers – those who eat our bread, drink our beer, and enjoy our milk and meat. So come along and join them, as Summer quietly turns to Autumn, and enjoy a warm welcome to a little glimpse into our farming world. Get your tickets soon though; something tells me the Alresford Show will be as popular as ever. Tickets prices: Adult £15, Senior £13, Children 11-16 £5. Buy before 25 August and save £2 per ticket. Tickets available online from: www.alresfordshow.co.uk or Six West - Alresford, Mole Country Stores - Winchester & Wickham, Bishops Waltham Post Office, Bishop's Waltham & Alton Herald Offices.

Winchester Heritage Open Days 2018
T
13th to 16th September
his September, Heritage Open Days, the nation’s favourite heritage festival, returns to Hampshire with four fabulous days in which to discover, celebrate and experience local history and architecture.
With more than 100 events to choose from, Winchester Heritage Open Days provide a wonderful day out for the whole family and every event is completely FREE! Some you can just turn up to but others need to be booked in advance. This year, our Extraordinary Women theme ties in with the centenary of some women gaining the right to vote but it also allows us to shine a spotlight on some of Hampshire’s own incredible women whose achievements and stories have sometimes been forgotten or overshadowed. The festival programme is now out and, not surprisingly, tickets are already flying out the door for special one-off events as well as the much-coveted behind-the scenes tours of buildings not normally open to the public. Do visit our website now and book early to avoid disappointment. Organised and run entirely by volunteers, the festival relies on the goodwill and generosity of many businesses, organisations and individuals. We are immensely grateful to all of them and particularly to our lead sponsor, Winchester College for its ongoing support and for opening its doors to so many wonderful events this year. However, the festival’s future depends on being able to meet its running costs. We are delighted to announce that Michael Wood will host our special fundraising event on the eve of the festival and chair a discussion with a panel of eminent historians on The Legacy of Alfred: the Anglo-Saxons and the birth of England. We do hope you will be able to join us and show your support. We look forward to welcoming you to Winchester Heritage Open Days. Some of this year’s highlights…

WELLBEIN G I SSU E 1 22 | AU G U ST
Wellbeing MOVEMENT ECOLOGY
What are the main diseases we see in captive animals? Cardiovascular disease, musculoskeletal pain, diabetes, obesity, anxiety, depression. Sound familiar? So what can we do, I ask, as I sit here in front of my laptop, only stretching my eye muscles to focus 2 feet in front of me, eating lunch from my delivered Graze box (reality check)? Katy says ‘you need to move more than you do right now.You not only need to move more, you need to move better. You not only need to move more and better, you must move with others, and move through, around and over some natural terrain. Move at your job, or move jobs, move homes or at least move furniture around or out of your home.’ What am I doing to increase my own movement and that of others? I’m going to walk (hop, skip and jump) to my local shops and buy locally produced, in season, organic food and carry it home. Inspired? Intrigued? Curious? Read Movement Matters by Katy Bowman and dive into a world of squats, bare feet, bugs, breathing and why YOUR movement matters.
‘S
tasis and convenience are a prison cell where your body rots’ Ben Pobjoy.Wow, what a powerful statement! I recently attended a truly inspirational workshop in Scotland on movement with the free-thinking, Biomechanist Katy Bowman (go look her up).
I came across Katy about 5 years ago and can credit her with much of my own movement journey. Her work delves deep into the mechanics of our sedentary culture and the vast potential of human movement. Her message is clear, ‘you are how you move.’
Emma Wightman www.the-sop.com
ARE YOU HAPPY IN YOUR ENVIRONMENT?
In her more recent work she has expanded this beyond the individual to consider our relationship with sedentarism, privilege and nature. We are pretty familiar with the concept of how the environment in which we live influences how we move (how many chairs v how many bottoms in your home?). But consider this; the way we move will also influence our environment, from our office and home space, to the community, city, country, and even the world in which we live. This is movement ecology. The convenience that you have grown to expect, accept and love is not only driving your own sedentarism and ‘body rot’, but also that of the man, woman or child that is laboring to provide it for you. Being seated is very much linked to consumerism and materialism. If you’re not moving, someone else is moving for you, either directly or indirectly by making stuff to make not moving easier for you. What can you think of that you use that means that you move less? It needn’t be the big stuff like a car or escalator. What about the tiny tea bag,TV remote control, electric tooth brush, electronic car key….? How much movement have you lost by accepting these conveniences and so many others? See how the choice to move (or not) is presented to us everyday, but how often we select the most sedentary choice without a second thought. In order for you to not walk around the car unlocking doors, turning your wrist or getting up to change the channel you have accepted a load of rubbish, plastic (landfill) and a battery. And another human has had to labour and another ecosystem is being destroyed to fulfill our love of convenience. We have a role in the ecosystem, and it is not an immobile one sitting comfortably at the top of the food chain as we have been taught. Our role is dynamic, proactive and integrative, and ultimately critical to all other living things on this planet. The majority of us live apart from nature, and health care practitioners are now dealing with the physical and mental effect of this separation. Our lack of movement, and our lack of movement in nature means we are essentially living like animals in captivity. 14
D
oes your environment work well for you? Is what you need right where you need it, when you need it? Or do the rooms you live in just accommodate your stuff? Could you do with the equivalent of a pond Sludge Buster, to clear the piles of unsorted papers, unworn clothes, unused recipe books, unfinished lotions in the bathroom, musty spices in the kitchen… all those accumulated reminders of past times and intended futures?
Our homes, if we are fortunate enough to have them, are where we stash our food, sleep, nurture our young, shelter from the weather. They are places to escape to from social pressures, and rest from the daily efforts to survive. Our living spaces feel safe and comfortable mainly because they are familiar. They are where we like to think we can ‘be ourselves’. But once your basic needs are met, you will not feel better to go on filling your space with things you can’t decide what to do with, or don’t have time to use, or which you hardly see any more except to edge around or to look behind when you have lost something else. Our possessions can become a burden and our surroundings confine us, instead of making us feel more calm and free. If your life is feeling empty or stuck, any little change for the better will make you feel livelier; and the place to start is where you already are, or where you spend most time. But the latest in kitchen and bathroom fittings or an even bigger television or sofa will not add up to less stress. For a lasting home improvement, change your mind, not your décor. Do you want to be less anxious, more assertive? Begin with your immediate environment. Do you want more time to devote to what you love and value most? Then consider overhauling the way you manage the spaces you live and work in.You are in your element when nothing in your surroundings impedes or distracts you, but on the contrary, silently supports you in doing and being your best. www.annapowell.com

entral Winchester’s regeneration has been given the green light with the highly anticipated adoption of a Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) for the area. The SPD incorporates the views of Winchester’s residents, businesses, students and visitors and follows extensive engagement and consultation throughout the district over the last 18 months. The vision for the Central Winchester Regeneration (CWR) area is for the delivery of a mixed-use, pedestrian friendly quarter that is distinctly Winchester and supports a vibrant retail, cultural and heritage offer which is set within an exceptional public realm and incorporates the imaginative re-use of existing buildings. Together with the Local Plan, the SPD will be a material consideration for any Central Winchester planning applications which will ensure aspirations for the area are preserved. The Council will be working with a range of experts and other landowners in the area to incrementally bring the regeneration vision for Central Winchester to fruition.
Throughout the regeneration, the Council will be looking for short and medium term development opportunities to ensure it continues to thrive for residents, tourists and businesses. Some of the improvements include: • Improving the overall look and feel of the public realm, including the Broadway • Refurbishing the Antiques Market to meet the needs of the anticipated locally based children’s theatre company tenant • Redeveloping Coitbury House into modern office accommodation • Negotiating with businesses interested in using vacant office and shop space until the buildings are needed for redevelopment • Working with Winchester School of Art to incorporate artwork on the site, including a mural at the Bus Station. In addition, the eminent archaeologists behind the guidance for CWR’s approach to archaeology will be returning to Winchester to participate in a series of events to enable people to hear more about the Archaeology Advisory Panel’s report and recommendations. www.winchester.gov.uk

HAMPSHIRE PEOPLE
The Forum talks with James Martin
H
e lives in both Yorkshire and Hampshire, and now runs The Kitchen, a restaurant and cookery school at the prestigious Chewton Glen Hotel in the New Forest.
Does James enjoy the pressure of cooking live on television? “I love the pressure, it’s no different to working in a professional kitchen. Cooking is a craft you can never master and that’s what makes you strive to be better. For example, last night’s service in the restaurant, (Chewton Glen), was fantastic, really busy. All the customers were happy, so the front of house and back staff were happy too. When it all goes well you can’t believe you’re lucky enough to be doing this job.” When choosing ingredients for the restaurant does James support local producers? “Yes, of course, where possible. But we are cooking for large numbers of people all the time – it was one hundred people last night, so if I need two hundred halibut then I go where I can source best quality product.”
F EAT U R E I SSU E 1 22 | AU G U ST
James Martin needs no introduction. As restaurateur, celebrity chef, author of seventeen books and host of at least eighteen television travel and cookery programs, he is one the nation’s favourite personalities.
Does James despair of our dietary excesses of processed foods? “No, not really. Look at the difference in the food culture compared to thirty years ago. People have so much choice now and it’s up to them to make their decisions.”
“I came to Hampshire twenty-three years ago; I love the coastline, and especially Beaulieu and the Isle of Wight.” From his native Yorkshire, James left Scarborough Technical College and went directly to Hostellerie de Plaisance in France, one of the many Michelinstarred restaurants James has worked in. Was that move a real culture shock? “No, not really. I had been going to France on holiday with my parents for years. Even at the age of ten I was in the French kitchens helping out. I wanted to cook so badly! I left school with one ‘O’ Level in art, but it didn’t matter - cooking was my passion.” That passion served James well. On his return to the UK, he joined Gerard Basset and Robin Hutson, founders of Winchester’s Hotel du Vin, as Head Chef. He was just twenty-two. Can James recollect the most memorable meal he has eaten? “I think The Waterside Inn at Bray. It has Michelin threestar status and is better than anywhere. It’s excellent in both front and back of house.” I asked James for whom he’d like to cook if he had the choice. Despite the fact he must have a wide range of celebrity customers, his choice was heartfelt. “My late grandmother. She was a fantastic cook and passed all her knowledge on to my mother. Sunday lunch was always for ten or twelve people with everything home cooked, the most fantastic and memorable meals. You can’t beat a good roast! My grandmother was also a huge fan of ‘Strictly Come Dancing,’ so she would have loved to see me on that!”
James is well known for his love of cars. Would he describe himself as a ‘petrol-head chef ’? He laughs, “ Yes quite possibly! I learnt to fly at Goodwood in West Sussex and still remember my old Mini! We may well do some more travel food programs when I drive around in a nice car. We’ll see!” So what next for James Martin? “God knows!! I’d be lost without my mother, my phone and my PA, that’s for sure! But listen, I feel very privileged to do my job, I’m so lucky. If I can inspire youngsters to cook then that makes me happy.” James is preparing a meal as we chat, so what’s for supper? “Roast pork-like I say you can’t beat a good roast!” GG 21

Trout 'n About
T
Sunday 5th August
rout ‘n About is a thriving local food festival which takes place in the market town of Stockbridge on the first Sunday of August every year. With over 100 stalls showcasing the very best of local food, produce and crafts, it is a great family fun day out – you can even hop on an old 1964 King Alfred Bus to get right to the centre of the action from the free car parks at either end of the high street! The festival is a great fun, free day out with something to enjoy for all ages. Children can visit the Kids Zone on the football field, complete with Juggling Jake, face painting, Test Valley Arts bus and kids rides, whilst adults can sample delicious produce as they sip on a cider and tap their feet to some excellent live music. New for 2018, we’ve even got a ‘mock wedding’ happening throughout the day in the courtyard behind The Vine – an excellent collaboration between the surrounding shops to demonstrate how much of your wedding planning you could get done just on Stockbridge High Street! Stockbridge is a wonderful town to visit; great shops, pubs, restaurants and lovely walks through the local countryside and along the famous River Test. The wide high street and market town history lends itself perfectly to a big street trading event such as Trout ‘n About.
22
The event is a not-for-profit enterprise and runs entirely on a volunteer committee, sponsorship from local businesses and a mass of volunteers on the day. The festival commenced in 2008 as an initiation by Stockbridge Area Partnership (SAP) in response to demand for a local foodies event, and it has organically grown from there due to the support of the local community, volunteers and stallholders keen to return.
Trout ‘n About has four main objectives: • • • •
To promote regional quality food, produce, local crafts and provide a platform for local businesses To raise money to support the local community To raise the profile of Stockbridge and celebrate its market history To provide an enjoyable event for the wider community and visitors
One of the key attractions of Trout ‘n About is being able to show the public what fantastic produce and fare they can source from the local area, and what amazing works are being created. Seeing all the producers and artisans together really is something very special. These events are also therefore platforms for local businesses to meet and engage with new crowds and hopefully pick up some new customers! Trout ‘n About 2018 is on Sunday 5 August from 10am – 4pm and we look forward to seeing you there!

POCKET THEATRE RAISE £1,000 FOR PLAYGROUND!
“Pocket Theatre were brilliant and gave everyone a really enjoyable evening – huge thanks go to them and everyone who helped and attended on the night!” said Claudia Rogers of Lockerley and East Dean Playground Committee. We think the playground will cost at least £60,000 so we're firing on all cylinders to try and get it built in the next year or two – in the last four months we have: • Held a bluebell walk and cream tea which raised £470 • Applied for several different grants and are awaiting news! • Started a monthly cake sale at Lockerley Green Stores – local residents are working together to sell homemade cakes in the shop on the first Saturday of every month. So far we have raised £159.50 and will hopefully raise close to £1,200 over the course of a year • Sent out questionnaires to local residents to get their feelings on the playground – all those returned have been very supportive of and excited about the project • Held the Pocket Theatre concert which raised £1,000 • We are running a summer design competition at Lockerley Primary School asking children to design a sign for the playground
O
n Saturday 30th June the Pocket Theatre company performed their concert of musical highlights in aid of the Jubilee Field Playground for Lockerley and East Dean, successfully raising £1,000 for the cause! Pocket Theatre are an extremely popular local group who perform productions ranging all the way from Shakespeare to pantomime. They enjoyed performing as part of the Romsey Festival last summer and have performed at numerous venues in and around Hampshire.

T
hree hundred and forty five children took part in Farleigh School's inaugural Arts Week which ran from monday 18th Friday 22nd June. From Year 6's musical, Peter Pan, to the Art Scholars' Exhibition and musical performances galore, it was a true celebration of the children's talents This was a week celebrating the richness and diversity in Farleigh’s arts provision, but first and foremost it was about enjoying the children’s talents and allowing them to express themselves. Pupils took part in 25 different events, drama featured heavily on the agenda with every child in Years 3 to 7 performing.Year 3’s Drama
26
With all of this and the huge level of support and generosity from local residents and parish councils we have raised £18,000 – with another £42,000 to go we are working hard on an exciting fundraising programme for the rest of the year so watch this space! For more information on the playground or to make a donation: Email: jubileefieldplayground@gmail.com Phone: 01794 340 846 Online donation: www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/jubileefieldplayground
Showcase was based on Roald Dahl’s The Twits,Year 4 performed short plays by Julia Donaldson and Year 5’s presentation centred on the forthcoming centenary of the end of WW1. A real highlight was Year 6’s annual musical: Drewe and Stiles’ adaptation of J. M. Barrie’s Peter Pan. There were numerous Spoken Word events including a Poetry Slam featuring the children’s own compositions, a Public Speaking Showcase and, as the 55th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr’s inspiration ‘I have a dream’ speech draws near,Year 7 presented a fascinating insight into the world of Civil Rights. The highlight of the Art Department’s contribution was undoubtedly the Art Scholars’ Exhibition; a stunning display of talent. That wasn’t it, however, as the whole school was involved in the emerging mural depicting the Georgian house in various lighting conditions. The Recital Hall, in the new Music School, featured performances from soloists and small groups and hosted a ballet performance. A street piano was installed in the courtyard for children to decorate and play upon much to the chagrin of those staff working in the vicinity! The week culminated in the biggest outdoor performance of the year as the Music Department’s 20+ ensembles came together to perform in the annual Summer Soirée. The most ‘hotly’ contested event took place in the Food Technology Room where 15 semi-finalists battled it out to see who would make the final of The Great Farleigh Bake Off.The talent on display was quite astonishing, the winner demonstrating consistently excellent baking in all three rounds. Director of Music, Marcus Reeves sums up the week: “A huge round of applause should be given to the 345 children whose creativity, imagination, flair and brilliance resulted in so many memorable and enjoyable performances.”

CATHERINE THOMAS' GARDENING COLUMN FOR AUGUST
A
s the seasons move from the fresh abundance of May and June into late summer the garden can begin to feel tired. However, if you have planned ahead the curtains are about to open on a dramatic performance.
Scarlets, oranges and warm yellows are much in evidence at this time of year, creating high impact, excitement and joyful exuberance. Another quality shared by many late summer plants is their stature. Among the giants are the Inulas the largest of which is Inula magnifica, bearing massive leaves and golden yellow daisies. Silphium perfoliatum hails from the American prairies and can reach a towering eight feet high. Other plants of prairie origin are the helianthus such as H. Moerheim Beauty, and Rudbeckia which can vary in size from the giant R. laciniata “Herbstonne” which can achieve a height of 2.5m to the more diminutive R. deamii which flowers reliably for months. Shrubs such as Cotinus coggygria 'Royal Purple' can bridge the seasonal divide with smoky pink flowers in early summer and yellow fruits in August, the leaves being purple with red tinges. Annual sunflowers are now available in some wonderful warm burnt oranges and branch dramatically to produce many flowers. Warm evening light enhances these hues and if you can arrange for low sunlight to illuminate the leaves of a Crocosmia from the back it’s even more thrilling. You can intensify colours by contrast: try Crocosmia “Lucifer” near a deep purple Lobelia “Hadspen Purple” or with a backdrop of Clematis “Etoile Violette” or, for subtler effect, Echinacea “Arts Pride” with Eryngium tripartitum. Finally, all this drama must be accompanied by a supporting cast of cooling green foliage if the eye is not to become tired. Written by Catherine Thomas Tel: 01722 339936 www.catherinethomas.co.uk 34

Garden LAWN ANTS
L
awn ants can be a real nuisance, let’s take a look at what can be done to reduce their numbers. Ants, like bees, live in a colony. An ant colony is made up of one or more fertile, egg-laying females and many hundreds, if not thousands of worker ants. The job of the queen, once she has mated, is to stay in the nest and lay eggs. The workers care for the queen and her eggs, protecting and feeding them. House-keeping the nest and foraging for food.
specialist action against garden pests is certainly justified. Many gardeners attempt to deal with ants themselves and often do this with traps, powder or boiling water. All of which is relatively unsuccessful and runs the risk of killing more grass than it does ants. Remembering that the colony exists because of the egg-laying queen, unless she is eradicated then the colony will continue to function. Surface applied powders and traps are doing little more than killing worker ants. The queen continues to lay eggs and the many hundreds of workers still in existence continue to feed them. How do lawn-care professionals manage a lawn ant problem? Throughout the summer period I visit many home owners who are frustrated by the damage ants are causing in their lawns. We use a specialist insecticide mixed with a wetting agent applied to each nest as a drench. The wetting agent helps the pesticide penetrate deep within the ant’s nest and to spread laterally through the soil – maximising the chances of reaching and killing the queen.
The eggs are laid deep down in the nest, in a specialised brood chamber. The tiny larvae are fed a liquid diet by the worker ants and when this stage of development is complete they pupate before becoming adult ants – and the circle of life continues. At certain times of year some species of ants produce winged females en-mass which fly off in search of a mate and once mated then find a suitable place to establish their own colony. You’ve probably witnessed this phenomenon yourself, typically on a hot and humid summer’s day. Why are ants in lawns a problem? Most ants in the garden are more of a nuisance than a damaging pest. However, in the UK a number of garden ant species will attack when under threat. Whilst this is unlikely to cause anything more than an unpleasant reaction, it can certainly be enough to spoil a picnic or make you think twice before sitting on the lawn with bare legs. It can be particularly unpleasant for small children wanting to play outside. Other than their bites or the spray of their acid, the other major concern that I come across related to ants in lawns is the damage they cause by bringing soil to the surface whilst excavating their nests. This causes two main problems – the first is that over time their excavations make the lawn uneven and cause ant-hills which are easily scalped as you mow the grass. Secondly the soil they bring to the surface is often flattened under foot or when mowing and can cause the grass to die back through lack of light. In both instances the result is a bare area ideal for the germination of weed seeds or moss spores. Killing lawn ants As gardeners we should be doing all we can to work with nature and not be heavy handed in our approach. However, focussed and
36
Dealing with ant hills If you do have ants bringing soil to the surface of your lawn then try to redistribute the soil with a broom or besom before mowing. If their excavations have made your lawn uneven this can be repaired by cutting and peeling back the turf before making levels good again and treading the turf back in place. Remember to water it in well. Attempts of getting rid of lawn ants are not as simple as you may think and you may actually make the situation worse. Asking a lawn care professional to help with the problem and ensuring any insecticides are applied safely will get the results you are looking for. Please remember that anyone using pesticides in your garden on your behalf must be licenced. If they are not then you are both breaking the law. Ian Kenyon owns Shrekfeet Lawn and Garden Services. tockbridge Thursday morning market had been going for many years in the town hall. Starting at 0930am and closing at 1130am, on Thursday 28th June it was relaunched as Stockbridge Community Market.
This was met with great anticipation by the regulars, not that the market itself had changed but there was free tea/coffee with biscuits cakes and some savouries – it was packed!! The format of the market is that stall holders (tables really) bring their goods to sell and receive a percentage of the takings in return. The additional monies go into the overall pot to pay for hire of the hall, insurance etc. Any money left over is accumulated and when sufficient has been collected they decide to which charity it should be donated. The stalls consist of a wide range of goods including cakes, savouries, seasonal vegetables (so you know they are fresh), eggs, craft items, plants, books and bric-a-brac.Tea and coffee or hot chocolate is also served along with a biscuit for very reasonable prices and for a little extra, cakes are available. It is a very jolly atmosphere and those of us who attend regularly look on it as a therapeutic exercise (we are the noisy table!) with much laughter. It would be lovely to see as many people attending on a regular basis as were there on 28th (surely it could not have just been the attraction of the freebies), so why not come along and join us. The kitty, having reached goodly proportions and to coincide with the new launch, it was decided to present a cheque for £115.00 to The Wiltshire Wildlife Hospital. Marilyn Korkis attended to happily accept the cheque. The hospital is entirely dependent upon donations and is particularly renowned for looking after hedgehogs, they housed over two hundred last winter. They also look after any injured animal from mice to deer, so are a really worthy cause.

Community JOYFUL MUSIC-MAKING AT ROMSEY ABBEY
the performance of Bach’s Jesu, Meine Freude, but the choir, under Jamie’s encouraging and sensitive direction soon came into their own with a very expressive and detailed rendition of an extract from Rachmaninov’s,” All-Night Vigil.” The tenor soloist for the fourth vesper was Matthew Minter. His generous dark-hued tone and commanding presence were exactly what was required for this piece. All the voices excelled in this work. The sopranos sang with great beauty of tone and the altos balanced them perfectly. The tenors and basses were clearly enjoying themselves and sang with confidence and strength. After the interval, Baroque pieces alternated with Romantic pieces. Highlights were Schutz’s joyful, “Psalm 100,” Palestrina’s massive engine of a piece,”Tu Es Petrus” and the sublimely comforting, “Geistliches Lied” by Brahms. The choir’s excellent German pronunciation was particularly noticeable in the Schutz and the Brahms. The choir was accompanied throughout the concert by Richard McVeigh playing both a chamber organ which he built himself and the nave organ. He also played two solos on the Walker organ showing the congregation the fully beauty of this excellent instrument. He demonstrated his considerable expertise through his playing of pieces by Bach and Mendelssohn.

omsey Choral Society conducted by Jamie W. Hall and in the presence of the Mayor of Romsey, Dorothy Baverstock and the Mayor of Test Valley, Ian Carr, performed choral masterpieces from history’s greatest composers on Saturday
July 7th.
Their last scheduled concert was cancelled due to the snow in March. Last night singers and audience were unusually hot in an Abbey famous for its Arctic temperatures. The extreme heat seemed to affect
Music in Romsey chose to honour Edna Rowland as she retired from her role as secretary and concert organizer. The choice of a concert by the Romsey Choral Society was apt as Edna’s husband Mike was on the steering committee for the formation of the Romsey Choral Society and Edna became the first secretary. Edna was presented with a Tudor vase that had been engraved by Patricia Hilton-Robinson. Mike was presented with a paper weight with a depiction of the choir stalls in the Abbey where he used to sing. It must give them great pleasure to hear the Romsey Choral Society going from strength to strength under the gifted direction of Jamie W. Hall.

Community and Leisure Portfolio Holder, Councillor Tony Ward, said: “The Four Fun Fridays events have been incredibly successful in recent years. The idea resulted from feedback from local residents and businesses requesting more High Street events. It is set to be a great summer in Andover.” The project has been funded by Section 106 developer contributions for Public Art from Andover Business Park and supports the Council’s ambition for public art in Test Valley to involve, inspire and intrigue. Any local businesses interested in getting involved should contact Faye Perkins, Arts Officer, on 01264 368844.
