PLAYGROUND RECEIVES SUPPORT FROM TEST VALLEY BOROUGH COUNCIL AND WAITROSE!
MEN'S SHED SPRINGS INTO ACTION WITH COUNCILLOR COMMUNITY GRANT
(L-R) Claudia Rogers, Kate Williamson, Tim Iles, Anna Standen, Councillor Ian Jeffrey
Members of North Baddesley Men’s Shed are presented with the Councillor Community Grant by North Baddesley councillors Ann Tupper and Celia Dowden.
T
est Valley borough councillors have awarded North Baddesley Men's Shed a £1000 Councillor Community Grant to contribute towards its essential start-up costs. North Baddesley councillors are supporting the group to fund tools, materials and safety equipment for their inclusive workshops. Men’s Sheds are community spaces for men to connect, converse and create. Based at North Baddesley village hall, the Men's Shed meets every Tuesday from 2pm to 4pm. Members are given an opportunity to meet like-minded people and have somewhere to share worries, increase social connections and develop improved skills and knowledge. The group has already received enquiries about undertaking projects for the local community. North Baddesley ward member, councillor Ann Tupper, said: “We are delighted to support North Baddesley Men's Shed, which provides both a meeting place and workshops for carrying out practical projects for the benefit of its members and the local community.” David Middlewick, North Baddesley Men's Shed, said: “With generous help from our funders, we have created a place to feel at home and pursue practical interests. The Shed aims to provide practical help, guidance and knowledge to others in the local community such as the village hall, youth clubs, charities and community groups.” Test Valley Borough Council’s Councillor Community Grant scheme helps to fund community-led initiatives. Local councillors allocate funds to projects that they identify as meeting a need in the community based on feedback and ideas from residents. www.testvalley.gov.uk

T
he Jubilee Field Playground for Lockerley and East Dean has made great headway in the last few weeks, raising a further £25,500! Since the fundraising concert at the end of June (which raised £1,000), we have heard that not only have Waitrose Romsey chosen the project for their Community Matters Scheme through August, but Test Valley Borough Council have also awarded us a grant of £24,995!
Together with other recent donations this brings the running total to £43,500!
Local ward member, councillor Ian Jeffrey, said: “In this day and age it is so important that children have access to good quality play facilities to tempt them away from TVs and tablet computers and encourage them to enjoy the fresh air and stay active. This is an excellent project and one that Test Valley Borough Council is pleased to support. We look forward to it coming to fruition.” Claudia Rogers of the playground committee said “We are hugely grateful to Waitrose and Test Valley Borough Council for supporting us – apart from helping us raise the profile of the project, the grant from Test Valley makes this project suddenly very real! If we can keep momentum up there is a chance we could get something built next year.” There is still another £20,000 to raise so we need help now more than ever to get to the finish line! We hope shoppers at Waitrose Romsey will support us with their green tokens through August, and our next homemade cake sales at Lockerley Green Stores will be on Saturdays 1st September and 6th October from 8am - get there early to avoid disappointment!

the opportunity to relax, look at the scenery, think about someone you love. Every deliberate decision makes the next one easier, and lets you live in the moment instead of being rushed from yesterday to tomorrow with no time to enjoy the view. Decisiveness says it like you mean it: not ‘I have to’ but ‘I am going to.’ Not ‘I’ll try to be there,’ but ‘I’ll be there’. Not ‘Hopefully see you whenever,’ but ‘When shall we meet?’ And when you do delay a decision, do it decisively. ‘I don’t have time now but I will properly think about this on Thursday at 11.’ Make a date in your calendar. Then give that item/task/situation your full attention. You will be liberating yourself at the same time. www.annapowell.com

I
t is exciting to have a variety of options. We all want to be free to choose what we like. But it is known that more choice does not make us more happy. The more time and thought we have to put into choosing, the more stressed we become. And then it is hard to make a decision at all. Deciding can be painfully difficult. It can involve emotional conflict and uncertain consequences. To choose one thing is to forego something else. Every decision brings the risk of regret. But every time you shove another unloved item back in the drawer ‘for now’, add another task to the ‘do sometime’ list, put up with another situation you don’t know what to do about, you burden your mind as well as your physical space with unnecessary obstructions. Unmade decisions lead to clutter and debt. Procrastination lets a present niggle grow into tomorrow’s monster. Not deciding leaves you feeling increasingly harassed, often guilty, out of control, overwhelmed. You no longer trust yourself to make decisions confidently. You no longer know what you want. You may not even realise you are repeatedly putting off making decisions. It seems easier to let impulse, distraction, habit or other people decide for us, than to stop, actually engage with the item, the task or the situation, and choose what to do about it. If you keep waiting until you are ‘sure’, you will be stuck in perpetual uncertainty. So what to do when you don’t know what to do? You can start by giving yourself less choice. Barack Obama is said to have simplified his wardrobe to identical shirts and trousers, so he didn’t waste time wondering what to wear. While all the media spotlight was on Michelle’s latest dress, he owned just one dinner suit throughout his presidency, and could be ready for any state occasion in ten minutes. You can cut some of your commitments, delegate others, change your way of life so that you are not distracted by so many calls on your time and attention. Then, practise making decisions more assertively: like exercising a muscle. Be decisive about the myriad small choices you already make every day. Choose to brush your teeth, put on your shoes. Even sitting in your car in a traffic jam allows you some choice: you might take

LOOKING AFTER OUR MENTAL HEALTH - SOME SIMPLE STEPS
L
ife is a bumpy road at times, even for the luckiest amongst us. No matter who we are, we will all have to negotiate potholes in the road like unwanted losses, minor and sometimes major setbacks. Sometimes the potholes are periods of difficult emotions like low mood or anxiety. But, we can all do some simple, cost free things to support our emotional well-being. They won’t guarantee us an easy ride of course but there is good evidence to suggest they can help to smooth the path significantly and enable us to negotiate some of those potholes with a little more confidence and ease.
Here are some ideas to consider;
Sleep - Most of us know that if we are low or worried, our sleep can get affected. But new significant evidence shows that poor sleep significantly contributes to mental health problems rather than being just a consequence of them. Research at Oxford University showed that treating sleep problems alone can lead to improvements in anxiety and depression, hallucinations and other mental health problems. ‘Sleep hygiene’ tools, the first steps in helping ourselves to improve our sleep are widely available. Here is a useful link to a free resource http://www.leicspart.nhs.uk/Library/296Sleephygiene.pdf. Other evidence based approaches to tackling sleep problems include Insomnia focussed Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and medications prescribed by your GP or Psychiatrist. Exercise - In addition to supporting you physically, exercise has been shown to improve mood and self esteem but perhaps most significantly, it has now been shown to be a helpful approach for treating depression. Four studies have shown that even 10-15 minutes walking can lead to reliable positive changes in how we are feeling emotionally. Social connections - Human beings are essentially social creatures. When we are not connected with others in any meaningful way, we are much more vulnerable to anxiety and depression. On the other hand, when we feel we are connected our mental health improves along with a wide range of other benefits such as improved immune function . This doesn’t rely on the number of friends we have but on a subjective and more subtle range of experiences and is illustrated well by the evidence emerging around the mental health benefits from shared activities such as choir singing or drumming. It seems that something slightly magical emerges when we join with others in a shared activity involving sharing a rhythm or synchronising breaths like singing or drumming. If singing isn’t your thing, you might 10
consider joining another type of group to reap and share the mental health benefits of joining in with others. Doing something that matters - Emotional difficulties usually get in the way of our lives so that we can let go of doing some of the things that matter to us, imagining we will return to them when we feel more up to it. We may even find it difficult to remember what they are. Letting go of activities which give us pleasure or meaning however tends to result in a downward spiral. This can be a bit like trying to dig our way out of a hole - we only make it bigger, no matter how hard we try. When we don’t feel our best, we may need to pace ourselves, take breaks, expect a little less from ourselves or find creative solutions to things but if we can continue to take part in those meaningful activities, even if we do them differently, we often support our well-being more effectively. There are many options for supporting our own mental health and well-being but there are also times when seeking professional support and advice can be important. If you do decide to seek the help of a Psychiatrist, Psychologist, Therapist or Counsellor, find one who you believe connects well with you and understands what you are going through. Although their expertise and qualifications will be important, research shows that the quality of the professional relationship you have with them is likely to have the greatest effect. Education STOCKBRIDGE PRIMARY & PRE-SCHOOL
S
tockbridge Primary School has stood on its site at the east end of Stockbridge high street since circa 1910 providing education for children aged 4-11 years old but it has now merged with an on-site pre-school so that it now caters for children aged 2-11 years old. The Children’s centre, which was built on site in 2010, was dissolved under Action for Children so the school has extended the age range of pre-school down to 2 years old and the Reception class of 4 and 5 year olds now occupies the great space with easy access to outdoors so that children can be out in all weathers. A huge amphitheatre area, large field, wildlife garden, polytunnel and woodland are accessible even for the youngest children so that they can explore and develop a love of the outdoors as well as using the great inside space and all the facilities from the school too.
The school’s most recent OfSTED report praised the links between pre-school and school which prepared children in the very best way; smoothly and with a growing confidence, for school. The inspector highlighted that the merge of the pre-school and school has resulted in positive outcomes for children as they progress through school but retains that sense of investigation, enquiry and fun that is so crucial to Early Years. As the school reopens in September for another academic year, they are already building on this good practice by developing parent workshops and, later on this year, hopefully toddler stay and play sessions will also be introduced. The school has doubled in size in the last 7 years and looks set to continue to grow with high academic results, strong outdoor provision and sport every day, resulting in 150+ happy children! POTS & PLANTERS FROM HAMBROOKS OF TITCHFIELD
Pots and planters Big, bold and beautiful. Modern garden designers tend to lean towards this vision when asked to use pots and planters to create architectural interest in clients’ gardens. Historically, ornate traditional planters made in the beautiful materials of marble, cast iron and lead have long been used in gardens. Although in their heyday, these types of planters sat proud and majestically on the gates of country houses or adorned large sweeping terraces. Beauty of the material More often than not these planters remained empty, with their owners seemingly happy to allow the beauty of the material speak for itself. There is a lesson here somewhere. Pots and planters look great overflowing with the bright colours of seasonal flowers, or helping to show off a specimen shrub. However, the effect of a beautifully made pot in the less expensive material of clay, can often make a bigger impact. The humble flowerpot The Egyptians were the first to make use of clay producing the humble flowerpot to move their plants about. Of course, in our more recent centuries, it is the Greeks who are more famous for their beautiful terracotta pots. Also, the Cretans have long used their local clay to make big pots to store grain, olives and olive oil. Earthy tones Authentic Cretan pots are fired up to 1150c, which means they can withstand the most brutal of our winter frosts. So in recent decades these very same pots, in all shapes and sizes have been finding their way to our shores. With their earthy tones of rust and tan, they have become increasingly popular as features in both the traditional and modern garden. Modern Lines For the more adventurous the huge range of frost resistant fibreglass pots is increasingly popular with people wanting something a little different. Not only can you have any shape or size to suit your garden, you can choose any colour under the rainbow and they come in a variety of finishes. Fibreglass pots are strong, lightweight and durable and planted with a colourful display of plants add a touch of class to your contemporary or courtyard garden. Because they are so light, these fibreglass planters are easy to move, which allows for more experimental positioning. These planters are particularly useful in the northern areas of the garden where you can use them to help to brighten a dark or shady spot. Finally, they are relatively inexpensive. Finishing touches No matter what material or style suits your tastes and garden, pots and planters help to add the personal finishing touches to your outdoor space. Frame the borders of patios, terraces and balconies or use planted with small trees or specimen plants to add height to small courtyards or gardens. You can plant with evergreens, colourful seasonal plants, trees and bulbs. The choice is yours. Hambrooks of Titchfield www.hambrooks.co.uk 01489 572285

CATHERINE THOMAS' GARDENING COLUMN FOR SEPTEMBER
Y
ou are probably already aware of the wonderful qualities of ornamental grasses. If not, then erase from your mind the giant pampas grass dwarfing the suburban bungalow – the new style of gardening with grasses can be subtle, beautiful, constantly moving and gently relaxing.
RICHARD PENFOLD
From late summer on many grasses progress from strength to strength, standing through the winter months, waving in the lightest breeze, adorned with frosty cobwebs in early morning light, and sparkling in low winter sunshine. Grasses in nature are the matrix in which wildflowers sparkle. They can perform the same service in your garden, contributing the “natural” in naturalistic planting schemes, weaving different flowering plants together and echoing the countryside beyond your garden boundaries.
FIREWOOD SUPPLIER
Seasoned mixed species of hardwood logs available in various load sizes and log lengths. I produce all my own firewood sourced from thinning and coppicing operations in FSC controlled sustainable local woodlands. My logs are naturally dried and stored in adapted barns for low moisture content and are always delivered dry. Firewood available all year round. PROFESSIONAL AND PERSONAL SERVICE
The soft translucent flowers subtly infused with pink of Calamagrostis brachytricha form a wonderful foil for the American cone flower Echinacea purpurea “Ruby Glow”. The strongly upright form of the cone flower is emphasised, as so often in planting design, by contrast, in this case with the soft clouds of grass. A larger scale scheme could include Miscanthus of which there are a staggering variety of cultivars in a range of subtle colours and sizes. This is one of the best grasses for winter structure and combines well with the seedheads of the globe thistle, Echinops ritro, the bronze fennel Foeniculum vulgare “Giant Bronze”, and many of the perennial sunflowers such as Helenium, Rudbeckia and Helianthus, all of which offer the added delight of being a magnet for winter flocks of goldfinches. Stand alone grasses are wonderful garden features. The Giant Oat, Stipa gigantea, is a great favourite of mine, growing to a transparent seven feet high, with “barely there” golden seedheads dancing in the slightest breeze. recover from scarification as it is a harsh process. Not only do they need time, but also warm, wet weather is essential too.
AUTUMN IS THE IDEAL TIME TO RENOVATE YOUR LAWN. LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT WHAT CAN BE DONE
O
ften lawns take a bit of a beating over the dry, hot summer months. High temperatures and low rain-fall is not much help for lawns. In fact, warm and wet autumn weather creates the ideal conditions for your lawn to recover quickly from any renovation work carried out over the next few weeks. Plants need warmth, moisture and good levels of light in order to grow well. Usually all three of these are present over the autumn months, making now the ideal time to improve your lawn. So, you might be wondering why your lawn is looking a little worse-for-wear and what can be done about it now. If your lawn is suffering with bare patches or weak grass growth in certain areas, what might be the cause? Understanding the cause of these problems is the first step to correcting them. There is little point in spending time and money treating the symptoms of your poor lawn if the underlying cause has not been addressed. All that will happen is the symptom will return again next year and you’ll have to deal with it all over again!
Both scarification and aeration create ideal surface conditions for over-seeding. Unlike re-seeding, where the existing vegetation is removed completely and a new seed-bed created for the sowing of a new lawn, over-seeding works with what you already have by adding new grass seeds to your existing lawn and helping to blend areas of weak growth into other areas of your lawn more naturally. It’s also far less labour intensive, uses fewer lawn seeds and is much more economical. It is however really important to deal with any weeds before re-seeding begins. New grass plants are susceptible to the treatments used to kill lawn weeds. Older, existing lawn grasses are robust enough to withstand these treatments. Therefore manage the weed issue first and then get new grass plants growing. Remember that once germination begins your new grass seeds need moisture to survive. They won’t be able to manage times without water until they have established roots. If it doesn’t rain then you need to remember to keep them watered for the first few weeks, however regular rain is almost guaranteed over the autumn and early winter. Any nutritional issues should also be addressed before over-seeding and autumn lawn renovation works begin. After all, your existing lawn will need all the help it can get to recover and the new seed introduced will be looking for the right nutritional support to help it develop and thrive. Applying the correctly balanced autumn fertiliser is essential to preparing your lawn for the tough winter months ahead. It helps develop the roots and will keep your lawn looking green and healthy throughout the winter without increasing the need for mowing.
Bare patches and weak growth are often symptoms of compaction where the soil is so solid that it affords the grass plants no real opportunity to grow well. The compacted soil drains poorly due to the lack of air gaps within the structure of the soil itself and the grass roots find it difficult to spread, resulting in stunted growth and weak plants more susceptible to disease, drought and death. Relieve the compaction first by aerating the lawn, and then you can begin to introduce new grass plants by over-seeding. Before you think about over-seeding you may want to consider whether your lawn needs a good raking. Or for larger lawns, mechanical scarification. Not all lawns need it however, but if they do it’s really important to carry this process out before the weather gets too cold and the grass stops growing. Lawns need time to
28
Finally, autumn is the ideal time to apply treatments for ant’s nests in the lawn which have been a real problem in recent years. It’s important to deal with these before they become dormant over winter resulting in those unsightly mounds of soil they bring to the surface next spring as the colony increases the size of its underground nest. Specialist treatments are available to deal with lawn ants. Speak to a lawn care professional now to plan ahead for the perfect lawn next year. You might be surprised how much improvement can be made this year and you can then enjoy your renovated lawn throughout the autumn and into next season. Ain't Nothing But a Hound Dog!
I
BY WENDY MARTIN GREEN
n the spring of 1956 Elvis Presley’s voice pierced the airways with his first hit Heartbreak Hotel quickly followed by his song Hound Dog, the same year that Peter Green opened his first little bed store on Leigh Road in Eastleigh. What many people don't know though is that ‘Hound Dog’ was actually written in 1952 and had already been recorded 250 times by various singers but it was Elvis’ smooth voice that brought it to the charts making the song a memorable part of our history. On a very much smaller scale the same could also be said of my father, Peter Green who on a local basis changed the landscape of Eastleigh when he turned his little bed shop into a massive furniture super store on Southampton Road bringing people who had never even heard of this little town flocking from miles around. At that time Peter Green was a cash and carry business and Saturdays saw a stream of customers, strapping rolls of carpet and furniture onto the rooftops of their cars, and driving their bargains away with them. The original showrooms sold all manner of tables, chairs, sofas, and beds laid out in rows, ready for ‘immediate delivery.’ Housed in an old brush factory Peter Green was a well known landmark and the largest furniture store of its kind in the South of England, and people still come up to me and talk about it. Thirty years later the business relocated to School Lane in Chandlers Ford and the old buildings were demolished to make way for the new Swan Centre. Unfortunately my father died in 1980 and never saw this move, but my mother Norah Green continued to see it through, and remained chairman until she died in 2010, after which I was happy to take over. Nowadays most items are placed on order, because of the vast array of choices in styles and fabrics we can now offer our customers, which requires many pieces to be custom manufactured. We do, however, have our very own Peter Green Hampshire Collection, many items of which are still available for immediate delivery. We still stock many of the trusted British brands such as Ercol, G Plan and Parker Knoll that could be seen in Peter Green’s first store 62 years ago but now we have added many modern lines to our collection. We have one of the largest selections of beds in the county and a huge selection of flooring too. We are proud that our family business still can play a big part in the community, and we enjoy staging fun events for our customers such as the Peter Green Spring Clean, with a fifties twist, or the Midsummer’s Night Sale which featured Shakespearean vignettes performed by the Chameleon Theatre group. We also hold networking evenings in our coffee shop for neighbouring businesses, and gallery evenings at which local artists can show their work. At Christmas we have entertainment for all the family and a Christmas Fair. We are still very much a part of the community as the old Peter Green was and we still hold dear to out hearts the principles that he taught us… value, price and service are the key and the customer come first. In honour of our sixty-second anniversary we have 62% off selected lines from the 2nd September until the 30th September 2018 and

Dragons and Damsels BY CLAIRE THURLOW
S
ummer wouldn’t be summer without the familiar rattle of the dragonfly, its delicate wings strumming a beat over the flower beds. During the heat-wave, it’s a relief to sit and enjoy the garden for a change, rather than just labour in it, and the persistent, yet gentle, buzz of the dragon-fly harmonises perfectly with the drowsy hum of the bees. A siesta in a hammock under the trees seems an appealing (if unlikely) option. We don’t have a pond in our garden, but the dragonfly is a stalwart flier and can travel some distance from a water source. It has four wings; the pair at the back being shorter than the pair at the front, and each wing is controlled by a separate muscle, so they can be rotated separately. This miraculous engineering allows the insect to change direction at speed, which must be a great bonus as both predator and prey. Dragonflies eat in mid-air, snacking on midges, flies and mosquitoes, as well as moths and smaller dragonflies. In turn, they can be picked off by birds or bees, but sadly are more at risk from climate change and destruction of habitat. Its flight really is unpredictable. I watch one land on a clump of verbena, where it lingers on a flower head, balancing elegantly as the stem sways in the breeze. This looks like an Emperor, with a long green body and green stripe on the tail. Suddenly it takes off vertically, then banks around to a fennel plant which has ‘bolted’ and is now a five-foot monster. The dragonfly hovers over the giant herb, surveying the umbels for an inflight meal, but turns sharply again, before whizzing off towards the meadow and pastures new. In China and Japan the dragonfly is considered a sign of prosperity and good fortune, so I’m more than happy to welcome one into the garden. Up at the village pond, a stunning display of waterlilies stretches across the water, with saucer-shaped leaves
36
and yellow flowers. Apparently, this stuff is nicknamed ‘brandy bottle’ because of the smell, but I’m not picking up any trace of it today. This woodland pond is a perfect spot for other members of the dragonfly family – chasers, darters and hawkers – as well as damsel flies, or demoiselles as they are known. It can be hard to tell them apart, but damsels not such adept fliers and tend to stay close to water. When one lands on a nearby branch, I lean in for a closer look. Both damsels and dragonflies have four wings, but the damsel rests with its wings neatly folded, while the dragonfly likes to stretch out. The eyes are different too. The damsel has separate eyes, whereas those of the dragonfly touch at a point, but both species have excellent, all-round vision. There is definitely something prehistoric in their appearance, and the ancestors of our Hampshire dragonflies were buzzing around at the time of the dinosaurs. Some of them were the size of an eagle, which must have been interesting with such a fast and furious flying style! A water boatmen skims by, hairy legs paddling away the pond. It’s swimming upside down and appears to be watching me with sinister red eyes. So, it can ‘walk’ on water, and (although probably not at the same time) ‘sing’ by rubbing its front legs against a ridge of its head.Very clever. And I’m happy to admit that bugs such as water boatmen are vital to the healthy life of a ponds and rivers, and the creatures which live in and around them. But can it compare to the dazzling dragonflies? I don’t think so. That flash of colour, combined with the inimitable rattle, and matchless flying make them unique summer visitors. Enjoy them while you can.

Additional borrowing can open up a world of different opportunities Over the duration of your mortgage your circumstances could change. This means you may need to borrow additional funds on top of your current mortgage.
and bereavement. For example, additional borrowing may help one half of a partnership buy out the other half to change the deeds into one name and continue the monthly repayments.
There are a number of reasons why you may want to consider additional borrowing. Below, we’ve listed four of the most common motivations many of our members choose to take on a little bit extra:
4. Purchase further shares of your Shared Ownership property Staircasing is a term given to buy extra shares in a property purchased through the government’s part-rent part-buy Shared Ownership scheme. To be able to do so successfully, your current lender must confirm that they are willing to lend you further funds to be able to afford an extra slice of the property. The amount you can borrow will ultimately help determine the size of your further share.
1. Build the extension you’ve been waiting for Home improvements are a common reason for borrowing extra money. Whether that is to convert the dead space in your loft or simply to upgrade your kitchen, renovating your home is not only enjoyable, but it may also add a boost to the value of your property when you come to sell. 2. Raise capital and gift to a loved-one as a deposit Providing the parent or grandparent owns their home, equity can be released from their property by raising a mortgage. By doing so, parents can unlock cash on their property to gift their children or grandchildren a deposit for their own home purchase. 3. Buy out a joint-borrower and/or partner following a separation (transfer of equity) As your circumstances change you may find that you need to tweak an existing mortgage. Transfer of equity refers to making a change to a mortgage – either adding or removing a person – for a range of reasons such as divorce, separation
