award winning kitchen makeovers

After Makeover

Upto 50% cheaper than a new fitted kitchen

My Kitchen was completed last month and I am thrilled with it. Our project was a fairly large one, which involved removing a wall, stripping out the old kitchen, laying a new machined oak floor and then finally installing the new kitchen.

Ben was always on the end of the phone to provide advice and support which was invaluable. We worked together to plan the kitchen but Ben had many useful suggestions, all of which I ran with and I am so happy with the final result.

At Happy Kitchens, we offer a wide range of makeover services ranging from replacement worktops, kitchen doors, splashbacks, hinges and wirework to new appliances and much more. We also offer new kitchen design and installation services too.

WELLBEING The right place for anything is where that sort of thing belongs – tools together in their place, clothes in theirs – and (crucially) where you put it back after each use. Where everyone in the family knows to find it, without endless ‘Has anyone seen my car keys…?’ and ‘Where did you put the…?

MAKE A DECISION I prefer the word unclutter to the increasingly common ‘declutter’. An uncluttered space is spacious, pleasant to be in. To me, a decluttered area looks bare, stripped, less than it was.You can get such a buzz out of clearing a place to within an inch of its life, that the decluttering gurus often encourage throwing out hard and fast as much as you can in one sustained assault. This may be necessary when time is short, but it is like a rapid diet: you may lose weight fast, but it will soon creep back, and even more than before. Your excess stuff, like excess weight, is a personal and emotional issue that can be dealt with more gently and effectively. It calls for sympathetic attention and planning in advance. Just as a definition of weeds is that they are the flowers you don’t want in your garden – because they tend to take over and choke the ones you do – clutter is only stuff that is in the wrong place at the wrong time. Stuff in the wrong place: The old rule ‘A place for everything and everything in its place’ is fundamental. Does every item in your possession have its own convenient, logical place, where you know exactly where to find it? What is the purpose of each room in your house, and is there anything in it which does not serve that purpose? My mother once designed a treasure hunt for one of my birthday parties. We had to run from room to room, looking for objects that were out of place. A toothbrush in the hall would direct us to the bathroom; a carrot in the bathroom would send us to the kitchen... Each displaced object was a clue that would lead us from one room to another until we found the treasure. Nice idea! It was a disaster. The children found so many items in every room that were out of place that the treasure hunt disintegrated into a shambles.

Stuff at the wrong time: I like the idea that there are two sorts of clutter. There is fear-based clutter, which you are afraid to let go in case you need or regret it later; or that represents memories you cling to, for fear of losing what is special about them. And there is hopebased clutter, which includes all the things you hope to get around to mending/decorating/using one day; or that you hope will be of more value in the future than it is to you now. The right time for stuff is what you presently love, use, and have space for, at this period in your life. Clutter is what you have grown out of, does not add shine to your present way of life, that would leave you lighter and freer if it was not there. The right time for stuff is the time you set aside to take hold of it, look at it, experience the emotions it stirs in you, and think through your priorities. Whether you want to sort one drawer or a whole house, take a little time to explore different tips and approaches; find what works for you and where are the sticking points that you may need help with. Uncluttering need not be a once-for-all, shameful or saddening, overwhelming encounter with your past or your unlived future. Let it rather be a continuous process of rearranging, reassessing, rediscovering, resurrecting, rethinking your life as you go along. You can’t stop old stuff from becoming less relevant, or new stuff from flowing in. A habit of redirecting the clutter as it starts to cluster will enable you to honour the past, make room for the future, and above all live unencumbered in the present. FEATURE

HAMPSHIRE PEOPLE

THE FORUM TALKS WITH GUY KREMER

FEATURE

Multi award winning, celebrity hairdresser Guy Kremer invites me into his beautiful Hampshire home and apologies profusely for ‘the mess’. Yet strewn over the enormous dinging table is not a mess but the representation of a many faceted man.

T

here is a pile of ‘get well’ cards from his many friends, which he assures me will all be answered. Guy has spent six weeks recovering from major back surgery and has spent the time ‘getting his life in order’- his personal papers in neat piles. Items from his collection of crystal adorn the table, sideboard and windowsill along with all manner of objet d’arte, but perhaps most telling is Guy’s own artwork, his brushes have only just been laid down. “If it was not for my painting I would have gone crazy these last six weeks! I am passionate about Picasso and Chagall so my paintings are often copies of their works. I would fill my house with Chagall if I could!” He proudly shows me a large note in which, in between Guys own artwork, are countless written messages of love and thanks from his celebrity clients from the world of fashion, music and stage many of whom are now friends. The items on the table are indicative of his personality and life. “I am a Leo- a creative- I love to keep busy.” Guy’s love of hair was borne from watching his mother’s being styled, which led to him becoming fascinated with the endless possibilities of styling hair. By fourteen he had started a hairdressing apprenticeship, came to England at the age of twenty one and opened his first salon in Winchester at the age of twenty four. “I was drawn to Winchester forty five years ago, I love small cites with a real sense of history and beautiful architecture. It makes me feel connected, not only to the place but also to history itself and my part in it.” WHAT IS BEAUTY TO GUY? “It can be any thing at any time; Flowers, art, nature. Even these Versace coffee cups” Guy has made coffee in cups that are delicate and exquisite. “It is ever changing, as a creative person I find beauty everywhere. It’s about what you see and about what you feel.” DOES HE THINK FASHION IS ALWAYS BEAUTIFUL? “ Not always no, it is constantly changing. What I like to wear one season I may not like the next. In terms of hair, it is not about fashion so much as creating an individual look for my client”. Guy Kremer’s reputation is global. When he’s not working at his Winchester salon he is travelling the world giving educational seminars, shows and working with celebrity clients. He also writes a regular column for Style Speak magazine. He has also developed the Guy Kremer hair product range. TO WHAT DOES HE ATTRIBUTE HIS PHENOMENAL SUCCESS? “Hard work for sure! I do remember in the very early part of my

career a woman said to me ‘Yes, but you are only a hairdresser’; that was the biggest insult of my life. Those words have stayed with me and driven me on. She did not realise that to be a hairdresser is to be a creative, an artist, to be inspired everyday. You have to eat, sleep and breathe hairdressing – give yourself to it- it’s not simply a job. I was lucky to be on The Style Challenge television program and from there I regularly appeared in The Times, Telegraph and Express - television opened a lot of doors for me.Yet in a way I was so busy I didn’t realise I was becoming ‘famous’ if you like. I remember the first time I was asked for my autograph, I thought they were joking! My mother told me never to get above myself and I never have. I cannot abide snobbery and conceit.” I WONDER WHAT INSPIRES GUY TO CREATE SUCH AMAZING AND BEAUTIFUL HAIRSTYLES? “I love the 1950’s. Everything so tailored and perfect, people really bothered with their appearance, they had a total image. British hairdresser Vidal Sassoon and French hairdresser Alexande de Paris were hugely inspirational.” BEING IN SUCH HIGH DEMAND HOW DOES GUY CONSULT WITH A NEW CLIENT? “Consultation is so important, as is psychology. If a client arrives with a photograph it is a starting point. You are able to begin to understand how they would like to be seen. But you have to adapt according to the type of hair the client has, the shape of the face, the colour and skin tone. Also what they like and dislike about their hair as it is and how they are able manage their hair themselves.” “During this process you get a feel for the personality, how confident they are and how they hold and present themselves. All these things are important when you are creating an individual look for a client. The very best reward is when a client turns to you and says ‘I love it’.” IT IS SAID THAT HAIRDRESSERS ARE LIKE COUNSELORS, DOES GUY AGREE? “Yes absolutely. Trust and confidentiality are key. Sadly, I have seen many clients go through breast cancer treatment, which has inspired me into doing charitable work for Breast cancer and Leukemia research. I often style hair for charity fashion shows with the Alresford based Moda Rosa and work with Sally Taylor for the Haven Trust. It's a fantastic way for me to give back.” WITH ALL THE BEAUTIFUL ART OBJECTS GUY OWNS, WHICH THINGS COULDN’T LIVE WITHOUT? “Ah easy! My hands, my scissors, my best friends and my dogs!” WHAT NEXT FOR GUY KREMER? “I am so excited about returning to work after six weeks – I can’t wait to get back! Our Colour Director, JC, is opening a salon in Lymington under the Guy Kremer brand and is using all Guy Kremer products, so I am supporting that franchise. I have never wanted to own a chain of salons, as I say – I am happy in Winchester!” “Also, a close friend will be opening a Lifestyle Café adjoining the salon which is incredibly exciting for us all.” GG

WELLBEING • And it can even help you lose weight! This is an incredibly nurturing and relaxing process, undoing limitation in all aspects of your life without any effort. At worst you feel like you have just had the best massage of your life, at best your whole life can change into something greater with total ease.

THE FORUM’S BEAUTY EDITOR TALKS TO AWARD WINNING BEAUTY THERAPIST DORTHE THOMAS ABOUT HER LATEST HEALTH GIVING HOLISTIC TREATMENT; ACCESS BARS The Access Bars are 32 bars of energy that run through and around your head, storing the electromagnetic component of all the thoughts, ideas, attitudes, decisions and beliefs that you have ever had about anything. There are bars for Healing, Body, Control, Awareness, Creativity, Power, Ageing, Sex and Money just to name a few.

YOUNG PEOPLE AND THEIR WORRIES

Dorthe explains, “The purpose of a Bars session is to clear away any previous negative emotions and experiences linked to those points, enabling you to gain clarity and a fresh perspective on your life.” HAVING YOUR BARS RUN CAN HAVE SO MANY PROFOUND EFFECTS, INCLUDING: • Reduced stress and worry • Reduced mind chatter • Increased energy • Elimination of aches, pains and stiffness in the body • Improved sleep and elimination of insomnia • Getting out of depression • Helps with Autism, ADD & ADHD • Decreased ageing

Whilst social media can fuel worries, school remains a significant source of anxiety for children and young people. It is a place full of academic and social opportunities as well as demands.Young people at different times can find some of these pressures overwhelming. Exams are a well known time of worry for people. Transitions in education (such as starting school, moving between school and leaving school) can often also be a very stressful and anxiety provoking time. When children are anxious a fairly common response is to avoid the people and places that are making them feel worried. In some cases, they may seek to withdraw from activities with friends and even families. It is not uncommon that they may spend more time on computers, which for some children can become a serious concern. Trying to understand what demands a person is avoiding and how they may feel overwhelmed by them is important.

Our children are growing up in a much more complex and socially connected world than previous generations have experienced. Whilst this brings with it great opportunities, it can also bring significant fears and anxieties as young people try to make sense of it and fit into this new and rapidly evolving social world. Social media, such as Facebook, Instagram,YouTube and Snapchat are common influences amongst increasingly younger children.

One specific area where a young person’s anxiety can affect them is sleep. Where sleep is affected over a period of time, this can impact them socially and academically. Often, during the day, they can keep their mind occupied and ‘push’ more difficult thoughts to the back of their mind. However at night when they try to settle to sleep there is little distractions available to them. This can mean that unsettling thoughts can rise to the surface and disrupt their ability

Dorthe has seen spectacular results with her clients. One of them explained: “Since having my bars done I’ve felt much calmer, less anxious and generally more joyful about my life; I’m also sleeping better than I have done in years”. For the entire process you will be lying down, face up and fully clothed. To initiate the process, Dorthe will start pulling energy through your body and from then on, the whole session will be focused on your head with Dorthe lightly touching various points. The whole session typically last for 60 minutes and can be combined with a facial or massage. Call 01264 748300 or email info@ dorthethomasspa.com to find out more or visit us on Facebook for your chance to win a free Access Bars session: @dorthethomasspa to go to sleep, with the thoughts seemingly swimming around and around in their mind. This is known as rumination. Often teenagers have the additional demands of peers and social media, with smartphones seemingly constantly by their sides. It is not uncommon for a young person to be contacted by another young person late at night. Again, such social connectivity can affect sleep onset and maintenance and may also be part of the reason for their worries in the first place. There are a number of approaches that can help with sleep difficulties caused by rumination. For example, a person could write a list of their problems, grade them into a hierarchy from the least impacting to the most. They could then write down what can be done about the problem, and when. This will help to put some context around the problems. For some people, other approaches can be helpful, such as using an audiobook to help disrupt difficult thoughts. Mindfulness approaches and guided imagery can also be useful, and there are a number of websites specifically for children and young people. Anxiety and uncertainty about the future at a time of change can very often ‘sit’ behind a number of the reasons why young people seek psychological support. AUTUMN APPLE HARVEST What could be more evocative of autumn than the apple harvest? There is nothing quite like biting into an apple freshly picked from your own tree. The flavour is wonderful, as sweet as summer sunshine and juicy with rain, and you can almost feel the vitality of this living fruit. An apple tree clothed in pink and white blossom, humming with bees, is a beautiful sight in spring and as summer progresses the ripening apples glow in colours from brilliant scarlet through purple to aptly named apple green. It is an asset to any garden, whether grown as a full sized tree, trained against a wall or fence, or in any of the forms in between. A mature tree, pruned for fruit over generations, gives a sense of maturity to a garden. I’ve even had gnarled old trees transplanted into a client’s garden to achieve this effect and, although the aged trees may have been past their peak of productivity, they survived, rather surprisingly, and achieved the desired effect. Trees of any sort are structurally important in garden design. The wide, spreading shape of a full standard apple tree provides seclusion and atmospheric shady space beneath its canopy. Trained trees can take several forms: the espalier is most common and I often train these on posts and wires as an attractive division between spaces in a garden or as a productive way to clothe a wall or fence. The stepover tree is a very dwarf form of espalier. It can be used to edge vegetable beds or paths and is usually about eighteen inches high. Cordons are single trunks trained diagonally, the advantage being that you can grow many different varieties in a small space. Apple Day is always on 21st October and there will be many events in Wiltshire and Hampshire see: https://www.awarenessdays.com/ awareness-days-calendar/apple-day-2018/ Written by Catherine Thomas Landscape & Garden Design Tel: 01722 339936 www.catherinethomas.co.uk

STREET PARTY RAISES FUNDS FOR THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION ‘THANK YOU’ MOVEMENT On Saturday 8th September, Hambrooks held a ‘Street Party’ for Southampton Veterans and Royal British Legion (RBL) members at their Garden Design Centre in Titchfield. The event raised over £200 funds for the RBL ‘Thank You’ movement, which involves activities in the last 100 days from the 8th August to the 11th November to mark the final year of the World War One (WW1) centenary. Hambrooks has turned one of their show gardens into ‘The Garden of Gratitude’ decorated out with a plaque of dedication, a RBL silhouette, poppies and a wreath made and donated by Lockswood WI. The Cowplain Ukulele Players played popular war songs in the garden followed by readings of WW1 war poems by Hambrooks’ staff. Guess were treated to a buffet lunch and a raffle with prizes donated by Hambrooks. Assistant manager Frankie Banking said, “We are very proud to be able to play a part in the Royal British Legion’s ‘Thank you’ campaign, helping not just to raise awareness but also to raise vital funds. Here at Hambrooks we have a legacy of 48 years in business with a long history of employing local ex servicemen. This together with Hampshire’s association with the Royal Navy and other military makes the Royal British Legion an ideal partnership.” Frankie Banting 01489 873948

COMMUNITY veritable treasure trove of fabulous textiles, leather, porcelain, wood, metal, and blown glass. Many of the exquisite items are exclusive to The Artisan Studio. Trilingual Juliette continues to travel the continent seeking out master craftsmen and craftswomen known only to the cognoscenti. Whether it be ceramists in Sweden or leather craftsmen in Tuscany there is a common theme. “Unlike most retailers I’m not constrained.” says Juliette. “I buy only what I like. Quality and distinction are the only criteria.” This philosophy explains the handmade in Tuscany carry bags, travel mats and beds for dogs!

THE ARTISAN STUDIO With a passion for craftsmanship Juliette Scott has curated a unique selection of luxury accessories for men and women, and beautiful items for the home. After eight years working on a European project promoting the works of leading rural

artisans, Juliette returned to England inspired to establish a fitting space to showcase their talent. This month her dream is realised with the opening of The Artisan Studio on the first floor at Fisherton Mill, Salisbury. With her invaluable contacts, Juliette has assembled a collection of individually sourced items ideal for the more discerning - a

of September and will run until the end of October 2018. The feedback will be used to help create a supplementary planning document (SPD) which will set out the community's aspirations for the area for future developers. The Romsey Future partnership hopes to complete the SPD by February 2020. Many people have already shared their views at events including the Romsey Food Festival and Romsey show. The public can also submit their suggestions online at www. romseyfuture.org.uk/sotc-haveyoursay Romsey Future representatives will be visiting a number of local venues and events over the next couple of months. Information about the project and consultation will also be available at the Former Magistrates' Court.

The Romsey Future partnership has launched its public consultation on the creation of a masterplan for the area south of the town centre, which includes the bus station and Crosfield Hall site. The partnership has appointed Nexus Planning and Perkins and Will architects to lead the consultation with residents, businesses and community groups on their ambitions and ideas for the area. The consultation started at the beginning

In addition, community groups can request a visit from the Romsey Future team to talk about the masterplan by emailing romseyfuture@testvalley.gov.uk Chair of Romsey Future, councillor Nick Adams-King, said: "This is an exciting once in a generation opportunity. I commend everyone with an interest in the future of Romsey to get involved and have their say. We have very much enjoyed speaking to people

Juliette also wanted The Artisan Studio to offer more than homewares. “I want to inspire both men and women with special and distinctive accessories made by amazing artisans.” These include cufflinks from a Parisian atelier and scarves dyed with woad using revived medieval techniques from the pre-eminent Toulouse experts. The Artisan Studio is the perfect place to discover something different. about their ideas and aspirations for the south of the town centre so far and I look forward to gathering further feedback over the next few weeks. We've already received lots of great suggestions and we will be considering all of the proposals put forward. "During the community involvement exercise to establish Romsey Future many people spoke about their desire to see the redevelopment of the south side of the town centre, including the Crosfield Hall site. They believed that this would help to improve facilities in the town and protect and enhance Romsey's retail centre. We have listened to those aspirations and have commenced a process which well help the people of the town and the surrounding villages to build upon those original ideas." The Romsey Future project began in November 2013 with the intention of developing a strategic vision shared by the community and the many organisations working in the town. The first Romsey Future vision document was agreed early in 2016 following an extensive community involvement process. A wide range of organisations working in Romsey signed up to the document. www.testvalley.gov.uk

RARE FINDS IN WINCHESTER!

A

fter the success of last year, The Rare Brand Market returns to Winchester’s Guildhall on Wednesday 14th and Thursday 15th November, and for the eighth year to Goodwood Racecourse on Thursday 22nd – Saturday 24th November.

Admission price is £10 or, with a friend, present this advertisement on the door and take advantage of the 2 for 1 offer. The Rare Brand Market likes to give back so is thrilled to announce that it is working with two regional charities which will share a proportion of ticket revenue.

So, what is rare? Wikipedia describes it as “not widely known and valued for their uncommonness”. The Rare Brand Market curates a wide range of rare brands across clothing, food, drink, jewellery, beauty, toys and gadgets, lifestyle and homeware. A brand may have great awareness in London but be considered rare elsewhere; other times, it’s a young, local brand giving you the opportunity to find unique gifts. The Rare Brand Market focuses on emerging brands, likely to have been created in the last 1 to 3 years. Come and meet the founders and hear firsthand the passion for their work!

Marian Parfitt, Breast Cancer Haven Macmillan manager said, “We look forward to working in partnership with The Rare Brand Market to not only raise vital funds but also awareness with their retailers and customers as many may know someone who has been affected by the disease. From its UK centres, this charity offers free emotional support; help with symptom control and practical advice to anyone affected by breast cancer”.

This pop-up Christmas market, now the largest on the South coast, will be open on Wednesday for extended hours. The fun is back in shopping. Come out of the cold and shop comfortably inside the magnificent Guildhall, in the heart of Winchester. Why not fix a date with friends and after shopping at The Rare Brand Market enjoy dining at one of the many restaurants in the beautiful city of Winchester. Refreshments are also available on site at the Guildhall’s Café Eighteen71.

Actors, parents and founders of The Murray Parish Trust, Sarah Parish and James Murray said "Giving back is a really important part of The Rare Brand Market's ethos, and our partnership will bring us closer still to achieving our own goal of funding a state of the art new Children’s Emergency Department at University Hospital Southampton, serving much of the South of England". www.therarebrandmarket.co.uk

Davina Robins, the hot new name in unique gemstone jewellery has brought her signature style to this chic shopping and lifestyle destination and opened a new design boutique in Stockbridge located in the now beautifully redeveloped courtyard of the Old Vine. “I am delighted to open up my own studio to both new and established clients and can not wait to showcase my own collections as well as offer a fully bespoke design service” After spending twenty-five years in the jewellery business, covering all aspects from sales to marketing, buying and designing she has finally struck out on her own with her signature range which she designs and makes

The mother of one, herself juggling work, creativity and motherhood knows only too well how much todays women have to contend with – and celebrates those with a full and active life. She says of her exciting new design brand “I’m in admiration of all those women out there who are running their own business, you have to be bold and courageous – and I just wish I had done it sooner myself as it is so fulfilling.” She is passionate about her sources of inspiration - the quality and originality of her gemstones and calls upon the textures and colours of nature to fuel her work. “I love all kinds of vivacious colour, I follow fashion that inspires my style look-book and stone choices – I scour the catwalks!” “I have had the pleasure of working with amazing designers like Shaun Leane – McQueen’s jewellery designer, Stephen Webster and Sophie Harley – who have all played their part in the evolution of my designs as you see them now.” says Davina Her trade-mark pieces have featured from catwalks to theatre and she hopes that her mix of beautiful elegant pieces mixed with cool and funky wearable necklaces offers something for the discerning ladies of Hampshire

“I think women now want a choice – they want something classic and stylish but they also want something that stands out- looks great and is a talking point” “I have a small edit of other designers that I love myself alongside my own collections – currently the funky Ibiza brand True Rocks and the designer for James Bond, Sophie Harley. Other chic designers will be invite along in the future and my loyal clients will be the first to view these by private invitation over a glass of bubbly when they arrive. It is fab to be able to work with these designers and share inspirations and build looks with them for my customers.” DR designs hopes to be a modern shopping experience, combining unique handmade pieces with a bespoke service and cool events. She is excited about the future and is vocal in her support for other creatives to follow their vocation and dreams “I would tell any other woman thinking of doing the same thing to go for it – don’t wait too long – it takes time and energy over years to build a brand” Watch her Instagram @davina.robins feed for upcoming events, products and announcements.

THE VIRGIN BEATER

© 2018 LUCIA FOSTER-FOUND

I

t’s half past eight on a chilly winter’s morning and, selfconscious in her flowery gardening wellies and borrowed Barbour, she arrives at the pub. Space is at a premium as she shoehorns her mini between a shiny new Range Rover and a filthy ancient Landrover, where they sit together, companionable, eclectic. Shyly poking her head around the door of The Wheatsheaf, she looks for her friend amid the atmosphere within, thick with the sound of hilarity and aromas of coffee and waxed cotton. Wading through a sea of panting spaniels and wagging Labradors to reach the bar, there’s friendly banter and introductions all round for the ‘Virgin Beater’. And a go on the sweepstake. Only two quid and she makes her choice based on insider information from the gamekeeper. The whispered number a mysterious calculation, apparently based on a look around the room and a peek out of the window. Then its into the beaters’ trailer to sit on hay bales, watching the farm go by, but only knowing where she’s been as she looks over the back door. The veterans get comfortable, making a roll-up for the next drive, WAGs gossip and children chatter in their excitement. Even the dogs, terriers mainly and the odd cocker spaniel, have an expectant look about them and, nerves dispelled, she feels a club-like spirit of inclusion into this alien world. Yomping through the fields, ploughed now, but frosty enough that she’s not carting half of Hampshire around on her boots, as bidden, she waves a flag made from a plastic feed bag and hazel stick. Calling “aye aye” like the others, she walks towards the copse, keeping in line with her neighbours as they drive the birds towards the guns waiting unseen behind the trees. The smaller skittish partridge are the first to take flight and head up and over the bare beech and oak, followed by a volley of shots. Exotic looking pheasants seem the last to fly. Reluctant to lift off, some leave it almost until the beaters tread upon them at the edge of the wood. Maybe they’re the smart ones, she thinks. Not gaining height enough to be considered safe or sporting, they’ll fly another day.

26

The pickers-up are doing their thing; working their dogs, retrieving the shot game. The guns too – many have dogs and the hillside is alive with activity as the birds are gathered, tied in braces and hung from the hooks in the game cart. The trailer bounces over the ruts in the tracks and the birds swing in unison as they’re towed away to the next drive. And so the day goes on. Fresh air and exercise deep in hidden Hampshire’s countryside she’d glimpsed mainly from the road. The sun comes out and jackets are shed. A welcome stop for elevenses; tins and Tupperware full of coffee cake, brownies, egg sandwiches and sausage rolls miraculously appear. Hot chocolate for the kids and a ‘sloegasm’ for the grown-ups – pink, fizzy and delicious – whatever it was… The hours evaporate and the day is suddenly over, as a weary but buoyant party reconvene at the pub. In the dusk, the game cart is the focus of attention, as the bag is discussed and a final count made. With a practiced eye and quick feel of the birds, the old timers choose the plumpest braces to take home with their beater’s packet. The remaining game is loaded into the butcher’s van, the temperature’s dropping and the gathering drifts back into the inn, where the log fire beckons. The talk is all about the day now past; a butterfly drawn out by the sunshine, a young Labrador’s first retrieve, the high pigeon. Steaming bowls of slow cooked game stew, and dumplings fragrant with sage are consumed at the tables, whilst the dogs sleep beneath. Pints and shorts are quaffed, volumes increase and the serious consumers settle in for the evening. The newest beater, replete with warm food and no longer a selfconscious stranger, bids farewell with promises to return. Heading for home she contemplates recipes for the brace of partridge that resides on the passenger’s seat, alongside her earnings. Also, minus the cost of a pint for the gamekeeper, are her winnings from the sweepstake - and she wonders “What price a terrier pup..?”

His style is very different and instantly recognisable, working in both Watercolour and Oils. He believes that when he paints he portrays the story rather than the person and explains it in his own words. “To paint movement…. you have to eliminate detail. I have pushed this concept further by also reducing my palette.”

JEREMY HOUGHTON - SOLO EXHIBITION, WYKEHAM GALLERY THURSDAY 11TH OCTOBER - PRIVATE VIEW 6-8PM The Wykeham Gallery is pleased to announce that on the 11th October 2018 we will be holding a Private View between 6-8pm for a solo exhibition by Jeremy Houghton. Jeremy’s resume is hugely impressive in terms of residencies, which have seen him become such a collectible British artist, and have included Highgrove for HRH The Prince of Wales (2013), Windsor Castle for HM The

THIS EVIL THING WRITTEN AND PERFORMED BY MICHAEL MEARS

Queen (2014), Goodwood for Lord March (2015), James Hunt F1 40th Anniversary (2016), Ben Ainslie Racing (2017) and Wimbledon Championships (2018). Jeremy’s extensive sketching and photography which he does before enables him to get the kind of understanding of his subject matter which is then so obvious in his work. Jeremy’s career started off in Law but then giving in to his artistic calling in 1998 he did a Summer Foundation Course at The Slade, followed by a Fine Art Degree at the University of Provence and then accepted a position as Head of Art at the International School of Cape Town.

Another aspect to Jeremy’s work is birds in flight, especially flamingos and the contemplation of light and space between objects which in other works would be the focus. Jeremy is an aspirational artist with an exceptional energy and passion that are reflected in his work and this unbelievable energy and dedication is what sets him apart. We are also delighted to reveal that in 2019 Jeremy will be the Artist in Residence for the Scout Centenary Year, where he will be producing 100 portraits of past members that include such dignitaries as Barack Obama, David Beckham, Sir Richard Attenborough and many more. fought in both world wars. This Evil Thing explores the courage it took to be a pacifist in the First World War, one hundred years ago – following two men in particular: Bert Brocklesby, a young schoolteacher, and preacher at his local Methodist church; and Bertrand Russell - one of the greatest philosophers of his time. With the advent of military conscription in 1916, their worlds are turned upside down.

to army generals, from Prime Ministers to world-famous mathematicians, with breathtaking physical and vocal dexterity, in a highly original piece of storytelling - using verbatim testimonies and interacting with an intricate soundscape.

This Evil Thing is the compelling, inspiring and rarely told story of the men who said no to war; and the men and women who supported them; involving a gripping journey from a chapel in Yorkshire to the House of Commons; from an English country garden to a quarry in Aberdeen; from a cell in Richmond Castle to a firing squad in France.

Michael Mears has been working as an acclaimed professional actor for over three decades. Onstage, he has performed for the Royal Shakespeare Company, the National Theatre and the Peter Hall Company on numerous occasions, as well as in London’s West End, most notably for nine months as Arthur Kipps in The Woman in Black.

With military conscription still in force in many countries today, and prisoners of conscience still languishing in jails, the questions posed by This Evil Thing are as relevant and urgent as they were one hundred years ago. Michael Mears – ‘The Fringe-First Award winning master of the one-man show’ (The List), portrays a gallery of characters from conscientious objectors

This will be held at Upper Clatford Village Hall, SP11 7QL on Sun. November 25th at 2.30pm (to be followed by a Q and A session) No need to book. No entry fee. Retiring collection. Tea.

At its world premiere at the Edinburgh Fringe 2016 it received four-star reviews and acclaim from audiences and press alike.

Merchant shipping - the world’s most vital industry? Sea transport is the backbone of our Global Economy and the size and shape of ships has changed dramatically to achieve an incredible reduction in the cost of shipping. How did merchant shipping transform itself into an industry that became so efficient that the cost of transporting goods by sea became cheap enough to trigger the start of the global economy? We will hear about the

and exhibitions, she can certainly claim to have achieved this.

Featuring over 40 artists from all over the UK and beyond, Nadia’s exhibitions are housed in a large, light-filled barn near Stockbridge which enjoys extensive views across the Hampshire countryside making it a gloriously ambient spot for admiring great art. types of ships, trade routes, cargoes, quantities, seafarers and ships of the future. Our expert and enthusiast, Rory Addison, hopes that, by the end of the presentation, you will consider merchant shipping to be the world’s most vital industry! Rory joined the Royal Navy at 15 and served for 8 years. On leaving he went straight into merchant shipping, sailing in tankers, crude oil and product tankers, bulk carriers, ferries and fishery protection vessels. On coming ashore, Rory studied for a degree in Maritime Studies and a Master’s in Maritime Law at the Institute of Maritime Law, Southampton University. He then went on to teach maritime students at Southampton Institute, and also worked in the NZ Maritime Institutions

CONCERT IN ROMSEY ABBEY - SATURDAY 10 NOVEMBER: REMEMBRANCE DAY CONCERT

in 1865. The texts provide comfort, helping the living to have hope and come to terms with bereavement.

STOCKBRIDGE AMATEUR DRAMATIC SOCIETY

Ralph Vaughan Williams’ setting of Five Mystical Songs by the poet George Herbert starts with the Easter chorus, a season associated with new birth, and the chorus “Love bade me welcome“ reinforcing the theme of hope and reconciliation. The gifted baritone and composer Jamie W Hall is the conductor and Richard McVeigh and Richard Pearce are the exceptionally talented accompanists. Romsey Abbey’s atmospheric building, the focus of worship for many years, offers a wonderful acoustic to allow full expression to the selection of prayers and poems chosen by the composers for their sublime works.

If you are a choral music enthusiast, then Saturday November 10th is a date for your diary. The programme for Romsey Choral Society’s Remembrance Day Concert includes Brahms‘ German Requiem and Vaughan Williams’ Five Mystical Songs. 2018 marks the centenary of the end of World War One and many families across several countries will be sharing a feeling of intense loss. Music is the universal healer and the chosen works are full of spiritual intensity, tenderness and sorrow. Brahms set a text from the Lutheran Bible, rather than the more commonly used liturgical Latin. This was his first major success, prompted by the death of his mother

RCS is an aspirational auditioned choir which presents three concerts a year, two of which are given in the historic Romsey Abbey. Further singing opportunities include - carol singing, weddings and other ad-hoc events. Rehearsals take place on Tuesday evenings in term time from 7.30pm – 9.30pm in a central Romsey location. For more details and for tickets go to www.romseychoral.org.uk or call 07780 682316. WATERMILL THEATRE PERFORMING 'JANE EYRE'

The Club is a non-profit organisation which, since inception, has helped to raise in excess of £12,000 for a variety of worthy charities. Furthermore, it was nominated for the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in 2017. Anyone who enjoys melodic, easy listening, live music cannot help but derive considerable pleasure from the sounds of the modern electronic keyboards. The monthly concerts, staged at the Fairground Hall in Weyhill, are performed by visiting professional artistes, all extremely talented, utilising a variety of electronic organs/keyboards – and first class entertainment within a friendly and relaxed environment is always assured. Despite initial doubts regarding the viability of such a venture, the Society has established a fine reputation and on 15 November 2018 reaches a ‘milestone’ by staging its 200th concert! The event will feature international concert and recording artiste, Nicholas Martin, BEM – the very same player who performed for the Club’s inaugural concert in July 2002 and for the 100th concert in August 2010. From a tentative beginning, the Society has made steady progress over the years and,

The styles of music presented by the guest players are wide-ranging and the programmes are always balanced to suit most musical tastes. Furthermore, provision of video projection equipment ensures that the entire audience has an excellent view of the artistes’ keyboard and pedal skills. Anyone interested in obtaining further information about the Society is invited to telephone 01264 323213 or visit the Society's website at www.weyhill-eos.co.uk

The Watermill Theatre will be performing ‘Jane Eyre’ at Goodworth Clatford Village Club on Saturday 24th November. Mrs Reed hates Jane and allows her son John to torment the girl. Start time: 7.30 pm, ticket price: £15. Tickets are available from the Clatfords Village Store or tel: 01264 353055

THE BOOKMARK STOCKBRIDGE Six months ago we opened The Bookmark on Stockbridge High Street, and we’ve been welcoming happy book lovers ever since! Hard to believe, but it’s the first ever bookshop in this lovely old town, and visitors have been very complimentary about our eclectic collection of titles across many genres. Though the shop is quite small, we carry a wide range of fiction, non-fiction and children’s books. And as we get to know our customers and their tastes, we’re able to order specifically for them - - requests usually arrive within a few days. We also aim to be part of the Test Valley cultural hub, and have been joining with the Stockbridge Cinema Club, Books in the Barn, and La Bella Donna on promoting events in areas of joint enthusiasm: fishing, fashion, food, décor and drink! On October 23 we’ll start our first in a series of author appearances. This time we’re delighted to have Tim Dee, acclaimed naturalist, author and broadcaster. He will give a presentation on his new book LANDFILL, and will be signing copies of this new release, along with his other well-known works, FOUR FIELDS and THE RUNNING SKY. FANTASTIC RESULTS FOR GODLPHIN A-LEVEL AND GCSE STUDENTS GODOLPHIN A-LEVEL RESULTS There is much to celebrate at Godolphin as the students achieved the best A-level results for the last five years with over half of grades at A* or A and 83% of grades at A*-B. A quarter of girls obtained three or more A*/A grades at A-level, half of our Sixth Form achieved two or more A*/A grades and nearly three quarters achieved one A or A* grade. This is the first year where the majority of subjects are now examined solely at the end of the Upper Sixth year, and so to achieve such superlative results in the face of some national uncertainty is truly remarkable. This was the first year of results for Godolphin Sixth Form students taking the Pre-U qualification in Art History and the results of five Merits and a Distinction reflect the inspirational teaching and hard work of the Department in responding to the demands of this new qualification. Particularly excellent results were returned in Biology, Business, Greek, Latin, French, Spanish, Maths, Geography and Physics which reflects the breadth of the subjects the girls choose to study here; whilst STEM remains popular, the humanities and creative subjects continue to be strong choices too. This year, 85% of girls who applied gained places at their first choice university. Godolphin’s post A-level applicants are leaving us to study an impressive range of courses including Medicine, History of Art, Zoology, Psychology, History, Computer Science, Journalism, Sociology, English and Illustration. GODOLPHIN GCSE RESULTS It has been another excellent year for exam results at Godolphin with the highest A*-B percentage for eight years of 94% (since 2010) and highest A*-C for six years (since 2012). The percentage of A*-B is up 10% compared to Summer 2017 in the face of much uncertainty with new 9-1 graded GCSE qualifications. Overall a third of grades were at A*, 8 or 9 and two thirds at A/7 or above. This is the first year that Godolphin has reported on the new 9-1 graded GCSE courses and we are thrilled to see that 17% of grades were the highest grade 9, which is set higher than the legacy A* grade. In Art, Geography and RS over a third of grades were at the highest grade 9. Nearly one third of students gained five or more A*/8/9 grades. Particularly excellent results were returned in Art, Geography, Latin (where all students achieved a grade 7 or above), Religious Studies, Biology, Chemistry, History, Maths, Further Maths and Physics. This shows the tremendous strength of both the Sciences and Humanities at Godolphin. After achieving such excellent results, students can now look ahead with confidence as they embark upon their A-level studies. Our stateof-the-art, extensively provisioned Sixth Form study centre provides all the support necessary for girls to achieve their ambitions, from Oxbridge entry through to the world of work and apprenticeships. With 25 subjects to choose from, popular A-level choices look to be Art, Maths, the Sciences and Business. www.godolphin.org

HOME COMMUNITY Caroline’s second book, a children’s first chapter book ‘You can’t be friends with a troll, Dotty!’ is due to be released before the end of the year. As well as supporting the charity, Caroline is also working with Crestwood Community School to encourage young artists. She is running a competition to find an illustrator for the book and the winner will not only be published worldwide, they will also receive the first, signed copy to keep.

LOCAL AUTHOR SHARES COURAGEOUS MESSAGE The Courage Foundation UK is a childbereavement charity based in Chandlers Ford, It raises money to send children bereaved of a sibling or parent on fun days out, to forget their troubles and to understand that they can still enjoy themselves. After meeting its founder, Ruth Palmer, in the school playground, author Caroline Meech, originally from Bishops Waltham, has recently self-published her first novel ‘Sifting Sand’ on Amazon and donates profits to the charity by way of support.

THE TEST VALLEY BUSINESS AWARDS 2018 WINNERS HAVE BEEN ANNOUNCED During the widely anticipated Gala Dinner & Awards Ceremony on 13th September at the Museum of Army Flying, the winners for the 2018 Test Valley Business Awards were announced. Seeing almost 200 local business representative gather together to network, enjoy delicious food prepared by local caterers McCrimmon & Reid, and recognise local business achievements, guests also had the opportunity to hear the evening’s Guest Speaker, Journalist & Broadcaster Dame Jenni Murray DBE, deliver a witty and fascinating speech in keeping with this – the centenary of the women’s vote. The sold out event also raised an incredible £1265 for Andover-based charity James’s Place Community Group; an intiative offering unique daycare to adults aged 16 and over with learning and physical disabilities. Then came the widely anticipated Awards Ceremony where all in attendance learnt which of this year’s 18 finalists were to be crowned the winners for 2018!

Caroline shares the reason why with us. “I met Ruth in 2016 whilst I was still penning my novel, it was a form of therapy for me as I suffered with Post Natal Depression. Meeting Ruth for the first time was like a breath of fresh air. Despite losing her son, Jethro Courage whom The Courage Foundation is named after, Ruth chooses to live life in a positive and uplifting way. She changed my whole outlook on life and my mental health which led to my recovery. Donating the profits from Sifting Sand is my way of paying her back. Ruth’s courage literally gave me the courage to fight for my future.”

Krista Dawkins, Head Teacher at Crestwood is enthusiastic about the prospect of working with a local author, “To have a Caroline involve our students in such a way is wonderful. Not only is she encouraging creative writing, she is also encouraging our young artists. We’re so excited to be involved!” Books are priced at £10 including p&p and £4 from each book purchased directly from the author herself will be donated directly to The Courage Foundation. To order a signed copy you can email carolinemeechauthor@ outlook.com For more information about The Courage Foundation visit them online at www. thecouragefoundation.uk

COUNCIL CONTINUES CAMPAIGN TO TACKLE HOMELESSNESS Test Valley Borough Council is continuing its campaign to prevent and tackle homelessness in the borough following reports of rough sleepers in Andover town centre. The authority is issuing advice to residents and shoppers in a bid to reduce the number of people giving money directly to those begging as this has the potential to exacerbate the problem. Housing and environmental health portfolio holder, councillor Phil Bundy, said: “We are absolutely committed to tackling homelessness and continue to focus our resources on addressing and preventing the problem. Last year the council’s housing team prevented 427 households from becoming homeless. “Rough sleeping is a complex issue and one that requires a variety of local agencies to work closely together to offer support to those in need. Unfortunately, the generosity and goodwill of members of the public can hamper efforts being made by local agencies to persuade people to move off the streets and come inside. Giving money directly to rough sleepers can sustain and prolong the problem and make them less likely to accept help from the local agencies, which has consequences for both their physical and mental health. “It is important to note that not all forms of street activity, such as

begging and drinking, equate to homelessness and many of these individuals have very complex issues. It is therefore vital that they have access to the right services, which is why people may wish to consider supporting local charities, such as Two Saints, Alabare and Andover Foodbank, that work directly with homeless people and those with substance abuse issues.” The average age of mortality for rough sleepers in England has been estimated at 43 years, almost half the UK life expectancy. Earlier this year, the authority launched a new pilot to coincide with the commencement of the Homelessness Reduction Act 2017. The pilot includes additional investment to support the council and its partners to prevent and relieve homelessness, and a commitment that, wherever possible, no individual who presents themselves as homeless will have to leave the council offices and sleep rough without first being made an offer of accommodation. For those living on the street, support and assistance is available to provide accommodation.” Councillor Bundy, added: “We want to reassure residents that we do all we can to help those who are sleeping rough as well as those at risk of ending up on the street. I would urge anyone who is worried about their housing situation to contact the council’s housing team as soon as possible as there are measures we can put in place to help prevent homelessness. Residents can report rough sleepers via the national StreetLink service at www.streetlink.org.uk

Four things to consider if you’re thinking about downsizing In 2017, leading retirement housebuilder, McCarthy & Stone, reported of a downsizing exodus with 5.7 million UK pensioners looking to move to smaller properties – 300,000 more than the previous year. This growth equated to an expected release of £80,000 of equity on average, equalling £450 billion while it is projected to more than double to £877 billion by 2036.

4. To live a simpler life As well as the many financial perks of downsizing, there is also a range of other benefits to moving to a smaller property. By having fewer rooms to maintain takes the pressure off if you’re struggling with upkeep.

Values high enough to make any homeowner in their later life dizzy, these findings clearly demonstrate the growing attraction of downsizing to a smaller property.

In addition, if you’re adapting to a smaller living space, you are forced to audit your belongings and thoroughly consider what really matters to you and what can be thrown away or donated to charity. There’s nothing quite like a good clear-out to ring in new beginnings.

Nevertheless, the decision to downsize is often not an easy one to make. Emotional attachments, memories and even the sheer amount of stuff which has accumulated over the years are often cited as three major turn-offs.

If you’re thinking about downsizing and would like to talk about mortgage options for you, pop into your local branch or contact us to arrange an appointment with one of our qualified mortgage advisers.

If the answer is yes, keep on reading as below, we have outlined four reasons why downsizing and ditching the family home could be the right decision for you: 1. To help fund retirement Releasing cash is a powerful motivation, but many retired homeowners find that their cash is tied up in a variety of assets which cannot easily be accessed, for example, they own their home but live off a small income such as their pension. Downsizing is an effective way to release funds and supplement a pension during retirement for other expenses such as the opportunity to travel abroad or to purchase the classic car you’ve always wanted. A smaller home doesn’t mean a decrease in lifestyle; in fact it can actually enhance it.

YOUR MORTGAGE IS SECURED ON YOUR HOME. THINK CAREFULLY BEFORE SECURING OTHER DEBTS AGAINST YOUR HOME. YOUR HOME MAY BE REPOSSESSED IF YOU DO NOT KEEP UP REPLAYMENTS ON YOUR MORTGAGE.

2. To gift funds for a loved one’s first house deposit (Bank of Grandma and Grandad) The Bank of Mum and Dad is increasingly relied upon by first-time buyers to boost them up the property ladder. However, grandparents are helping out financial too but find that much of their wealth is tied up in their own property. By downsizing, you can gift a proportion of the sale to a loved one for a house deposit. You may even be able to pay off your own mortgage at the same time. 3. Reduce monthly outgoings A smaller property ultimately means smaller outgoings on things commonly expensive to run. Electric, gas and water in monetary values will be far less in a smaller property then a big family home with plenty of rooms which aren’t being used anymore. Your carbon footprint will be a lot cleaner and the environment will thank you for it too!
