award winning kitchen makeovers
After Makeover
Upto 50% cheaper than a new fitted kitchen
My Kitchen was completed last month and I am thrilled with it. Our project was a fairly large one, which involved removing a wall, stripping out the old kitchen, laying a new machined oak floor and then finally installing the new kitchen.
Ben was always on the end of the phone to provide advice and support which was invaluable. We worked together to plan the kitchen but Ben had many useful suggestions, all of which I ran with and I am so happy with the final result.

At Happy Kitchens, we offer a wide range of makeover services ranging from replacement worktops, kitchen doors, splashbacks, hinges and wirework to new appliances and much more. We also offer new kitchen design and installation services too.

WELLBEING abundance, hence why skin appears firm, supple and smooth. However as we age, our collagen production begins to deplete and as a result skin becomes gradually looser, giving way to the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and sagging.”
THE FORUM TALKS TO DORTHE THOMAS, ANDOVER’S ANTI-AGEING SKINCARE SPECIALIST, ABOUT MEDISPA TREATMENTS THAT DELIVER RESULTS Thanks to revolutionary developments over the past decade, we’re living in a golden age for anti-ageing skincare. Today we can dramatically improve our looks without suffering or breaking the bank. But with so many different treatments out there, how do you know which will actually work best for you? Dorthe Thomas, an award winning, Andover based Beauty Therapist is just the person to ask. “It’s all about looking better as you grow older. Today my clients demand more from their treatments; long gone are the days when they were content with receiving a facial that made them feel relaxed and glowing just for that one day. Now, and rightly so, they expect results that last.” Collagen-inducing and skin resurfacing treatments are Dorthe’s tried and tested approach for clients wanting more youthful looking skin. “When we’re young, our bodies naturally produce Collagen in
Our enticing treatment menu includes your everyday beauty and wellbeing essentials such as facials, waxing, threading, massage, reflexology, eyelash extension, Jessica manicures and pedicures, Geleration Gel Nails, and Xen-tan spray tan, as well as a range of specialist Aesthetic treatments such as IPL laser hair reduction, lipo laser, cavitation and radio-frequency slimming treatments, cellulite reduction, Crystal Clear microdermabrasion, Oxygen facials, derma pen and skin peels.
Dorthe offers a variety of skin resurfacing and collagen-inducing treatments to help turn back the clock and restore complexions back to their plump, taut and youthful best. Chemical Skin Peels can help to improve skin texture, scarring, sun damage and hyperpigmentation; or even give you a radiant glow before a big event of occasion. When you undergo a chemical peel, specially selected enzymes and chemical exfoliants breakdown the upper layers of the skin to reveal the fresher, rejuvenated skin beneath. Microneedling, also known as Dermal Rollering involves causing a controlled injury to the skin as a way of effectively tricking the skin into repairing itself. The treatment involves rolling very fine needles over the target area and piercing the skin’s surface. Following this regulated injury, the skin’s healing process kicks into action, thus stimulating the production of collagen and elastin. Love Plasma Pen for skin tightening, face, brow and non-surgical eye lifting is one of the newest and most exciting treatments to hit the beauty world. This innovative technology utilises plasma - formed through ionisation of atmospheric gasses - to stimulate instant contraction and tightening of skin fibres. If you’re looking a little bit tired, becoming conscious of your laughter lines, falling out of love with your sagging eyelids or simply wanting a fresher look, then Fibroblast could be the treatment for you. Dorthe is offering 20% off Skin Peels, 50% off Microneedling and 25% off Plasma Pen treatments this November – quote Forum11 at time of booking. WELLBEING critical self having another go at me, this is confidence saying Go for it!” It is helpful to everyone when you learn to communicate your feelings: not as rights, or excuses, or reproaches, but to clarify where you are coming from; to explain your present point of view, without demanding sympathy or compliance.
HOW ARE YOU FEELING? This country used to be famous for its British reserve and its stiff upper lip. Now we take our cues from television characters who scream and slam doors and hotly accuse each other at the slightest provocation. Public displays of rage or sentiment are reckoned as more honest, authentic or ‘human’ than calm and rational courtesy; and we freely broadcast a spattering of emotional reactions to the world on social media, in the convenient shorthand of emoticons. Emoticons can express what we find difficult or are too inhibited to put into words. In this world of remote communication, where the person you are speaking to is not right there to read your expression, a wink or a smile can convey your meaning more subtly than words.
SOCIAL MEDIA: IT’S A LOVE/HATE KIND OF THING
Recently I came off social media for a 6 week detox, the longest break I’ve ever taken. I have had an app called Moment running in the background monitoring my phone usage, and my screen time literally halved overnight. It’s been a great refresh and reset, and I’ve loved not thinking in captions, posts and comments! But I have missed the connection it brings and in particular keeping up with the rapid advances in the world of health. I think we all have a love/hate thing going on with social media. HATE • You become self obsessed and self absorbed
But do emoticons help us to accept how changeable, irrational and complex our emotional weather really is? Or do they reduce complex shades of feeling to a set of clichés and grimaces, the online equivalent of cartoon expletives like ‘Grrrr’, ‘Arrgh!!!’ and ‘??’ In magical tradition, to name something gives you power over it. When you can appreciate your emotional state of mind lucidly enough to label it – “What I am feeling is angry, or sad, or anxious…” – you take command of the stress or upset that a moment before was controlling you. It is immensely helpful to give a child the words to pin down their confusing emotions: “That looks frustrating”, “Are you very disappointed?”, “That was surprising, wasn’t it?” It is immensely helpful to yourself to name your feeling, or cocktail of feelings: “This is only fear talking, this is my • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
It promotes superficiality and image/body obsession It nurtures self-embellishment - is this not a form of lying? You focus on fantasy instead of embracing your true self You compare yourself with others You become judgemental of yourself and others You turn into a blob in your chair Your posture suffers, and your activity and variety of movement declines Potential for misinformation and misinterpretation It distorts reality It affects sleep It reduces you having real-life, real-time connections with others It increases FOMO (fear of missing out!) It’s a creativity, activity and imagination drain It causes self-doubt, anxiety and depression - ‘everyone else’s life is better than mine’
LOVE • Connections around the world • Keeping up with research, opinion and discussion • Education • Freedom of expression, dump your stress, have a rant
Your kneejerk reactions are never a reliable guide to what matters. Our emotions do not tell us what is true. They can only tell us what we believe, or hope, or fear at this moment in time. But they give us a rich, rapid and intuitive range of responses to the world and to each other, faster than thinking. To be emotionally aware is to become emotionally resilient. If you know what it feels like to be afraid, defensive or hostile, you can also be more freely grateful, affectionate, compassionate. When you pay attention to your feelings, whether your heart is sinking or singing, you will know the direction of your thoughts. Then you can make decisions and move on, wholeheartedly – with heart and mind together – instead of being blown off track by mysterious and unwanted impulses. Relaxation and entertainment Campaigning, awareness and role modelling Accessible support Share a worry or anxiety Share a passion, success or skill Connect with like-minded people or organisations Business promotion and growth Creativity, individuality and innovation
I’m sure we have all experienced these feelings to a greater or lesser extent, but what my extended time away from social media has shown me is the need for more mindful usage. How aware are you? What do you love and hate about social media? Does it affect your mental health or reduce your physical activity? Can you be more mindful about how you use it? I would highly recommend you try the Moment App (Apple) or Your Hour and App Usage (Android) and see what your screen time usage looks like. So, I’m back for the moment, but I’m staying in control! GARDEN topiary shapes arranged in a line across the garden. To me they resembled large ladies in full skirts dancing in the wind. How best to use topiary in the garden? I find it wonderful for defining space, punctuating paths, lurking at the bottom of steps and, of course, as living sculpture. Squat balls used at regular intervals can slow the eye as it travels through the garden and unify a mixed planting scheme. Conical punctuation marks define an entrance. Whatever the shape, topiary always has presence. Its solidity sits firmly amongst more airy and ephemeral plants or stands proud in the smooth sward of a lawn. It can populate an empty space with whimsical characters.
TOPIARY: HOW TO USE IN YOUR GARDEN From the Moguls of Kashmir to the Chelsea Flower Show, and from the gardens of stately homes to tiny cottage gardens, gardeners have trimmed bushes into shapes. This is topiary,
NEW FOREST SURVEY SET TO LAUNCH
A survey to further understand the impact of new housing developments on important protected nature conservation sites in the New Forest is set to launch this month. Residents and visitors will be asked about how they spend their time in the New Forest. This information will help local planning authorities in the surrounding area to identify measures to help understand and address the impact of an increase in population as a result of planned new housing development in and around the New Forest. Dorset-based consultancy, Footprint Ecology, has been commissioned to undertake the
the art of shaping living plants to our will and whim. I like to think that there is room in a garden for jokes. I once visited a private garden which was open to the public for a day in Salisbury Cathedral Close. It was tremendously windy. I stood on the raised terrace and was entranced by the huge yew survey on behalf of New Forest District Council, New Forest National Park Authority, Eastleigh Borough Council, Southampton City Council, Test Valley Borough Council, and Wiltshire Council. In spring 2018, these organisations received £250,000 of government funding to help update evidence and to work together to establish a consistent approach to ensure new development does not have an adverse effect on the unique wildlife and traditional management approach that characterises the New Forest.
The best plants for topiary are those with small leaves. Yew, holly, rosemary, myrtle, and bay have all been used in the past, although bay trees trimmed into lollipops have become a little clichéd. Variegated leaves are not recommended as they confuse the clarity of form. Fast growing plants will achieve quicker results but you will find they need trimming several times a year or you will end up with punk haircuts on your sculptures. Yew, box or holly will need only an annual trim. Keep shapes simple – no need for anatomical perfection as these comical peacocks demonstrate. Written by Catherine Thomas Tel: 01722 339936 www.catherinethomas.co.uk around the New Forest to relieve some of the pressure and impact on the area.” The surveys will complement the wider work to update the New Forest Recreation Management Strategy. A detailed public consultation on the Recreation Management Strategy took place over the summer asking for people’s views on how best to achieve this.
Representatives from Footprint Ecology will be conducting face-to-face surveys in the New Forest over the coming months and in spring and summer next year. They will also undertake telephone surveys later this year to speak with those who live in and around the New Forest. A spokesperson for Footprint Ecology, said: “We are working with various local authorities and organisations to gain a better understanding of what draws people to the protected habitats of the New Forest and how frequently they visit the area. The results of the survey will enable us to establish what further measures can be put in place in and
The Recreation Management Strategy work and the Footprint Ecology research will together provide a sound basis for ensuring future enjoyment of the New Forest without causing damage to sensitive wildlife and habitats. www.testvalley.gov.uk

Plans to commemorate this year’s Remembrance Day and the centenary of World War One in Andover have been boosted with a £650 Councillor Community Grant. Millway Councillors selected the Andover Branch of the Royal British Legion to be awarded the funds. The grant will go towards hiring a
Opening hours 10.00am - 5.00 pm Tuesday to Saturday.
Millway Ward Councillor, Sandra Hawke, said: “Test Valley Borough Council is keen to help commemorate those who lost their lives fighting for our freedom. This year is a particularly poignant Remembrance Day as it marks the centenary of the end of World War One, and I’m delighted to be able to award the Royal British Legion this funding to help with plans for this November.” Test Valley Borough Council’s Councillor Community Grant scheme helps to fund community-led initiatives. Local councillors allocate funds to projects that they identify as meeting a need in the community, based on feedback and ideas from residents.
The beautiful 130 acre grounds have long provided an inspiring environment for children aged 2 – 18 to succeed academically, to develop the confidence to be their own character and to instil in them a compassion for the world. The Friends of Hampshire Collegiate School invite you to enjoy a morning in the school’s wonderful Manor House with an array of unique and diverse shopping experiences. Thirty boutique stalls from both near and far will be selling their delights in which to tempt you to either start or finish your Christmas shopping! Please join us for a fun morning of shopping, delicious refreshments and festive music from our children - we look forward to welcoming you. The school is also holding an open morning on Wednesday 7th November. For further information on both events, please visit: www.hampshirecs.org.uk
The ‘Tommy’ silhouettes are near life-size and can be fixed to a wall or attached to an upright post in public or private spaces. The silhouettes will be displayed across the country by businesses, local authorities and individuals as a reminder of the sacrifices made during the First World War. The silhouettes have at their base the words 'Lest we Forget' but any business or community group can buy and sponsor a silhouette and have its name incorporated in the base wording, as an act of Remembrance and supporting the valuable work of The Royal British Legion. www.testvalley.gov.uk

WATERMILL THEATRE PERFORMING 'JANE EYRE'
STOCKBRIDGE BUSINESS ASSOCIATION - SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY Unlike most other high streets in the UK, Stockbridge seems to be bucking the trend. With no empty retail units, Stockbridge High Street is a vibrant, flourishing place to be. No wonder it is known as “the jewel in the crown of Test Valley”! On Saturday 1st December the Stockbridge Business Association is celebrating Small Business Saturday which is an annual nationwide event promoting local small businesses.
With a High Street full of independent retailers Stockbridge offers you the opportunity to find unusual and unique gifts this Christmas while enjoying the ambience this small town offers. Many shops are creating a unique shopping experience for the day offering nibbles, drinks, giveaways and discounts. The newly finished Vine Yard will be hosting Father Christmas and there will be festive music and food. The Local Handbell Ringers will be playing up and down the high street and the main Christmas tree lights will be switched on at the end of the day. Stockbridge really is the place to visit allowing you an enjoyable day out away from chains and charity shops.
The Watermill Theatre will be performing ‘Jane Eyre’ at Goodworth Clatford Village Club on Saturday 24th November. RARE FINDS IN WINCHESTER!
A
fter the success of last year, The Rare Brand Market returns to Winchester’s Guildhall on Wednesday 14th and Thursday 15th November, and for the eighth year to Goodwood Racecourse on Thursday 22nd – Saturday 24th November.
Admission price is £10 or, with a friend, present this advertisement on the door and take advantage of the 2 for 1 offer. The Rare Brand Market likes to give back so is thrilled to announce that it is working with two regional charities which will share a proportion of ticket revenue.
So, what is rare? Wikipedia describes it as “not widely known and valued for their uncommonness”. The Rare Brand Market curates a wide range of rare brands across clothing, food, drink, jewellery, beauty, toys and gadgets, lifestyle and homeware. A brand may have great awareness in London but be considered rare elsewhere; other times, it’s a young, local brand giving you the opportunity to find unique gifts. The Rare Brand Market focuses on emerging brands, likely to have been created in the last 1 to 3 years. Come and meet the founders and hear firsthand the passion for their work!
Marian Parfitt, Breast Cancer Haven Macmillan manager said, “We look forward to working in partnership with The Rare Brand Market to not only raise vital funds but also awareness with their retailers and customers as many may know someone who has been affected by the disease. From its UK centres, this charity offers free emotional support; help with symptom control and practical advice to anyone affected by breast cancer”.
This pop-up Christmas market, now the largest on the South coast, will be open on Wednesday for extended hours. The fun is back in shopping. Come out of the cold and shop comfortably inside the magnificent Guildhall, in the heart of Winchester. Why not fix a date with friends and after shopping at The Rare Brand Market enjoy dining at one of the many restaurants in the beautiful city of Winchester. Refreshments are also available on site at the Guildhall’s Café Eighteen71.
Actors, parents and founders of The Murray Parish Trust, Sarah Parish and James Murray said "Giving back is a really important part of The Rare Brand Market's ethos, and our partnership will bring us closer still to achieving our own goal of funding a state of the art new Children’s Emergency Department at University Hospital Southampton, serving much of the South of England". www.therarebrandmarket.co.uk

BESPOKE JEWELLERY DESIGN AVAILABLE IN THE VINE YARD
If you saw Forum last month you may have caught the article on Davina Robins the jewellery designer who has opened her new atelier in the Vine Yard, Stockbridge. Davina assembles beautiful hand woven structures onsite which she describes as ‘mini-sculptures’ and places stones together in her pieces like an artist selects paint for their palette. “My drive and determination to get to this stage has been full on! I feel very grateful to have found this beautiful space to work from”. She is inspired by the intricacy and perfection of nature. Situated in this beautiful part of
Hampshire feeds her design inspirations. “I often start with mood boards that give a flavour of how my collections will develop. I focus on seasonal colours and textures but that is as much as I follow trends. My collections evolve from what inspires me in the moment – it could be an art or fashion exhibition I have recently visited or a school project with my eight year old son or even just hanging out in London for a day which feeds my imagination.” But it isn’t simply about her own collections, as she also offers a full bespoke making service. “A client can approach me with as much or little of a brief as they feel when thinking about having a bespoke piece made. They can be as involved as much as they wish in designing a piece of jewellery. A commission I have at the moment is to design a pair of Padparadscha sapphire & diamond earrings for a client – Padparadschas are one of the rarest sapphires and one of my favourites too. The clients brief was not too prescriptive, she just said she loved the beach! There is a huge element of trust when it comes to making significant pieces of jewellery that can stay in a family for decades so getting to know my client is vital. Then making a piece for them that has a real connection to them is what I really enjoy
– the personality of the client comes first and then the design will follow. My signature collection is where I indulge my own creative desires and like to take risks that balance beauty with more exciting style ideas. I stay true to myself and only create pieces that I enjoy wearing myself. “
Whether it is to view Davina’s unique and edgy collections or meet her to discuss a bespoke piece of jewellery, a visit to her studio is a must this season. “I am so excited about my first festive season in Stockbridge. I love my warm and inspiring little place and if you are thinking about a bespoke piece, the most important thing is for me to know a bit about you first, so please come in soon and have a chat.” Davina Robins Tel: 07810 008132 Studio 4, The Vine Yard, Stockbridge, SO20 6HF ATELIER JEWELLER BESPOKE COMMISSIONS REDESIGN & RESTRINGING WEDDING & ENGAGEMENT RINGS CONTEMPORARY DESIGNER COLLECTIONS

of England, causing significant damage to buildings in Salisbury and the death of four horses. Fate was kinder to the business which prospered and expanded over the years, taking over the premises next door in 1853 to form the shop as you see it today. Last year the firm celebrated its bi-centenary. W. Carter & Son has always been a family concern; Director Paulette Newman’s great grandfather was the first Holmes family member to join the business in partnership with the Carter family. Her father Brian and Uncle Tad still work part-time and all three hold the coveted Jewellery Diploma. Meanwhile, fellow Director Sebastian Salt has over twenty years’ experience in the trade and is a Fellow of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain, a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. His wife Charlotte also works full time in the business. What makes this historic jeweller different? Sebastian Salt says “Many customers ask us for specific pieces, which we source using our extensive knowledge and contacts in the trade. Our goldsmith has more than 45 years’ experience and can create beautiful bespoke pieces. We put in the same amount of effort, however big or small the request.”
W. Carter & Son enjoys the unique position of being the oldest family business in Wiltshire still trading from its original location.
As a traditional jeweller, W. Carter & Son offers a classic, timeless range that is always in vogue no matter how trends and fashions change, alongside more contemporary pieces. Whatever the requirement, each customer is treated with old-fashioned courtesy and unrivalled service.

MANNERS MAKETH WHITE VAN MAN © 2018 LUCIA FOSTER-FOUND
L
aM (Lord and Master) burst through the front door and slammed his keys down on the table. I’m sat on the kitchen floor de-burring the spaniel. The painstaking process is endured with stoicism by my floppy-eared friend and, as it’s a not-infrequent occurrence, (the bursting, slamming and so forth), the dog and I look up with only a polite interest. “Oh, bad day darling?” I ask. “Thump, thump” enquires the dog’s tail. “Bloody white vans. There ought to be some sort of supremely difficult exam that white van man has to pass. Or better still, an incredibly slow speed restriction. Or both.” The dog’s fur, now rid of all manner of ingenious seed carrying vehicles, had returned to its habitual smoothness. Stroking her was very soothing. I was able to make suitably sympathetic noises, whilst mentally checking the contents of the freezer to locate the peas that were to accompany the fish pie currently in the oven. Encouraged to continue, he ranted “Overtook me on the dual carriageway at god-knows-what-speed, then realised that it needed to take the next turning off, so slammed on the breaks just in front of me and, well, I nearly died!” Love him and his sense of the dramatic. LaM stepped over the dog, poured himself a scotch and sat down at the kitchen table. Dutiful dog went to greet him, presenting her head on his knee to be stroked. The recuperative combination of Famous Grouse and soft silky fur, restored his sense of proportion. “I’m happy that you made it home in one piece, darling.” And I was. He was an irascible old stick, but he was my irascible old stick. Plus, there were a whole stack of manly chores lined up for his weekend’s spare moments, no doubt shoehorned between the round of golf on Saturday morning and the rugby international on Sunday afternoon. “On the whole, though, I’d have to say that I find van and lorry drivers to be some of the most courteous and considerate drivers on the road. They pull over on these narrow country roads and put their hand up in thanks when I do the same.” I commented mildly as I retrieved the peas from the freezer and popped them in the microwave. “That’s because you rarely drive more than a 10 mile radius of the village, my darling, and hardly ever leave Hampshire. Your world is in miniature, sweetings.” A fair point, if a little patronisingly delivered, I had to concede. I’ve got to a certain age and know what I like. And what I like is my home county, Hampshire. With its cities, towns, villages, beautiful countryside, rivers and seaside – it was indeed a wonderful world in miniature – and was all I needed. But I pressed on regardless. “Today, for example, a little old lady cut right across my side of the road and proceeded in a series of lurches, kangaroo-stylie, as she turned up Parson’s Lane. I had to slam on my brakes, and instead of putting her hand up to say ‘sorry’, which would have been nice, she
just glared at me as if I was a dangerous driver and everything wrong in her world was now my fault.” “Isolated incident.” LaM was dismissive. But actually, now that I gave it some thought, that sort of thing happened quite a lot in my world. Perfectly lovely, smiley, sweet natured old dears of the village got behind the wheels of their cars and assumed a scowling, slightly demonic expression, coupled with ‘interesting’ driving techniques. Was it, to cut them some slack, merely a lessening of awareness brought on by their diminishing faculties? Note to self as I opened the oven; keep close eye on LaM, who, let’s face it, wasn’t in the first flush of youth. “No – you cannot speak of the ignorance and recklessness of white van man in the same breath as our friends and neighbours.“ he said with a grandiose finality. The dishing up of the fish pie rather brought the conversation to a natural end. The following afternoon, after he returned from the golfing expedition, LaM offered to drive me into town. His destination, a DIY store (remember the aforementioned manly chores?) was next to the garden centre that I needed to visit. Returning, loaded up with bags of Feed&Weed and quick set cement, we were pootling along the road to our house. Drawing up behind a small cordoned off section of roadworks on our side of the road, due to some much needed superfast broadband for our village, we waited for the flow of traffic to break so that we could move on. We waited. LaM tutted. We waited some more. He tapped his fingers on the steering wheel. A steady stream of cars continued towards us with no sign of letting up. “Oh for goodness’ sake!” LaM had reached the end of his (rather short) tether “Will no one stop and let us through?” he shouted at no one in particular. As if by magic, the next vehicle approaching stopped and flashed his lights. It was a white van. “Look darling, that white van has stopped and the nice man is letting you through. Isn’t that kind and helpful of him?” The irony was apparently not lost on LaM, who harrumphed and mumbled something that sounded like “One swallow doth not a summer make.” As he went to pull away, already raising a hand in thanks to the smiley white van man, LaM was forced to slam on the brakes. Weed & feed and quick set cement slid forward and collided with the backs of our seats, as we were overtaken from behind by an elderly couple in a brand new SUV. From their lofty perch, manufactured somewhere in the Pacific rim, they grimaced at LaM and white van man both, as they cut across our path and roared away. White van man shrugged and raised his hands, palm up as we drove past him with a cheery wave from me and a shake of his head in utter disbelief from LaM. LaM’s absolute certainty in the-way-things-aresupposed-to-be had been somewhat shaken, so I allowed myself the merest of gloats as I patted the dear old stick’s leg. “Welcome to my world, darling.”

ANDOVER FESTIVAL OF MOTORING A ROARING SUCCESS The sun shone down and thousands of visitors came to Andover High St on Sunday to enjoy the annual Festival of Motoring. This was the fourth Festival of Motoring organised by the Andover Town Centre Partnership (ATCP) and was supported this year by BP Rolls Automotive,Venture Security Management and the St Mary’s Ward Councillors. Over 100 interesting and unusual vehicles were on display from classic Jaguars and Corvettes to Harley Davidsons and Triumph Motorbikes. Organisers report

that record numbers of visitors attended the event this year with around 5,000 taking to the High Street throughout the day. Retailers reported a big increase in trade with Barry Price, Manager of the John Russell Fox commenting “Sunday was an exceptionally busy day for us thanks to the Festival of Motoring which brought loads of visitors into the town. What a great event for Andover!” The Festival was originally due to be held in September but was postponed at the last minute due to terrible weather conditions. Gemma Thompson, from the ATCP who organised the event commented “We couldn’t be happier with how the day went and would like to thank everyone who came along and gave generously to through the 1951 film starring Michael Redgrave. Andrew Crocker-Harris is leaving his post at a public school early, for health reasons. The brilliant academic success of his youth has been followed by a life of professional and personal disappointment. However, a pupil gives him a leaving present of the Browning Version of Aeschylus, with an inscription that touches his heart and leads him to feel that his life has not been in vain. It is a play with an understated, but powerful, emotional punch. We feel devastated for the mild-mannered, much abused Crocker-Harris, and the outcome is redemptive.

The Browning Version is a short play that runs for about an hour and 15 minutes without an interval. Director Sue Jackson said “It is a pleasure to work on one of the
Festival Sponsor Louise Ellison from BP Rolls commented “we were only too happy to sponsor the Festival of Motoring, and what a wonderful day it was for Andover! The turnout was amazing; every time I looked down the high street there was a sea of happy smiling people, enjoying the sunshine and the fantastic variety of vehicles on display. Many people have commented on the increase in footfall it generated for local businesses which is brilliant to hear." Venture Security Management handled all the vehicle movement and placement on the day and Managing Director Paul Howe commented, “We’re really pleased to be involved in this year’s Festival of Motoring. The event was very well planned indeed and the day was a huge success. We’re already looking forward to 2019!”

TEST VALLEY ARTS FOUNDATION CHAIR'S REPORT 2017/18 Following our 25th Anniversary, the Board hoped to have a bit of a rest. But TVAF@25 had unfinished business. The Bus of Many Things was in demand during the summer at a wide range of events including village fetes and regular stops at Hilliers Arboretum and Mottisfont Abbey, as well as the Eastleigh Mela and a much drier Romsey Show. The bus is a very versatile venue and with the mixture of an artist or two organising a variety of participatory activities, makes it a very popular attraction. One of the events started during our 25th year was Make Your Mark organised by the wonderful artist Ruth Facey. She went with the Bus to a variety of venues, encouraging everyone to use a variety of tools for mark making on recycled copper. The end result was the unveiling of a panel now mounted in Andover Museum displaying the originality and talent of the Andover public. Our activity in Romsey has continued to grow – we are still negotiating with Test Valley Borough Council for the use of the top floor of the Botley Road Chapel, by local artists. Councillor Dorothy Baverstock from Romsey joined our Board; she brings energy and experience to the Board including a deep commitment to Romsey. The Live, Laugh, Love Test Valley website continues to grow and attracts many visitors. Be Wiser Insurance, particularly Mark Bower-Dyke the Managing Director and Chairman, continues to support TVAF. They are particularly keen on supporting projects that encourage young people to write creatively and the Talk About Festival, organised by Cat Randle involving a number of local schools, launched at The Lights in June 2018. Aviva Insurance through Be Wiser awarded a grant of £1000 to TVAF for a Digital Technology Schools Arts project to be managed and run by Chapel Arts Studios. The objective is to use IT – software and hardware - in educational creative projects, mixing up art and IT, which is often separated within a school. Chapel Arts Studios (CAS) based in the Chapel in St Mary’s Churchyard, Andover came into being some ten years ago and has been led by artist David Dixon. CAS has established a national reputation for running a number of very successful arts projects rooted in the community, often on a shoe string budget. This, together with
the fact that TVAF has very finite cash reserves, meant that TVAF recognised that CAS needed to find a more secure funding base. During 2017, CAS submitted an application for grant aid support to the Arts Council of England. The application was for a four year period which would involve CAS becoming an independent Arts Organisation with its own programme, governance and artist network. The application succeeded! It would be impossible to list all those who contributed to the effort which went into the application – David was the key co-ordinator with Maija Liepins, TVAF Treasurer Roy Chatfield and Mark Courtice. The investment by the Arts Council of England in CAS is a huge vote of confidence in the Test Valley and the County of Hampshire. CAS now begin an important journey to become an independent Arts Organisation – it will be challenging and invigorating but TVAF can be justifiably proud of CAS and wish it the very best for the future! I have deliberately avoided just drawing up a list – none of this would have been possible without the support of all Members of the TVAF Board who continue to give so generously of their time and energy. Roy Chatfield, retired in March 2018; he has been an outstanding Treasurer and we are all very grateful for his help, guidance and support. Roy is an award winning playwright and he will be busy writing ‘It Happened in Hampshire’, a light hearted history of Hampshire to be performed next year. He has been succeeded by John Dumper from Broughton. Many thanks too to Hampshire County Council and Test Valley Borough Council for their continued support. We are also very grateful to all the artists who have been involved in our efforts during the year and to our excellent volunteers – one in particular, Rodney Allsop-Seward, our Bus Driver, deserves very special thanks. TVAF continues to hold dear its core belief that innovation and creativity continues to bring forward new ideas– the future will be even more innovation, creativity, joy and laughter! AN INVITATION TO A DROWNING: THE PURPOSE AND OPERATION OF WATERMEADOWS Watermeadows are integral to the landscape of ‘Wessex’. There were commonly constructed in the seventeenth century and represent a huge effort of human labour that modified river floodplains in order to bring grass production forward in the spring and increasing the productivity of hay crops. The talk will describe their form, operation, their historic economic importance and outline their value today.
HANDEL MESSIAH, THE PERFECT ACCOMPANIMENT TO CHRISTMAS?
on 13 April 1742 to an audience of 700. Such was the demand for space that women were requested to come without hoops and gentlemen without swords. Something that the ‘Phil’ will also be requesting for this performance!
Southampton Philharmonic Choir return to O2 Guildhall Southampton on 1 December with a Christmas favourite. Messiah may well be the most famous of all choral works but reasons for another performance are numerous and compelling. It is a genuinely virtuoso work; requiring superb vocal technique from the chorus and soloists, a wide range of emotional expression and the ability to convey the most dramatic of narratives as well as moments of intense reflection. The fact that parts of Messiah are well known is a huge advantage to performer and listener alike - providing rallying moments of instant recognition and pure excitement. However, in such a substantial oratorio, there are always new or less familiar moments to surprise and delight the listener.
Messiah is the perfect companion to Christmas and, for many, it is an indispensable part of the festive season. With music of such remarkable quality, something new and fresh is almost inevitable, especially in a performance with the world-class Hanover Band. The use of period instruments creates just the right quality of sound, whilst experienced musicians, immersed in Baroque style and techniques, bring authenticity and authority to this popular work.
Speaker: Dr Hadrian Cook Dr Hadrian Cook is a hydrologist and soil scientist who specialises in river catchment and floodplain management. He has researched the operation and history of watermeadows for over 20 years. He is currently a Trustee and ‘Drowner’ for the Harnham Water Meadows Trust in Salisbury. Hadrian has taught in schools, at Wye and Imperial Colleges in the University of London and more recently at Kingston University. He has published widely in areas of hydrology, sustainable agriculture, environmental science and history and water policy.
The choir is also delighted to welcome back the wonderful soprano, Erica Eloff, with further soloists yet to be announced.
The timing of this talk will prepared those who are interested to visit one of the winter “drownings” in Salisbury.
Tickets are available now from www. ticketmaster.co.uk box office 023 8063 2601 Saturday 1 December 2018 7.30pm at O2Guildhall, Southampton, see www.southamptonphil.org for more details.
No booking is required. Entry is £5, to include a glass of wine or juice. Free to full time students. This is part of the Test Valley Villages Lecture Series and will be held at 8pm on Wednesday November 21st, in St Mary’s Church, Broughton.
Messiah was committed to paper in a mere 24 days between 22 August and 14 September 1741, and was first performed in Dublin

CULTURE runs, arpeggios, and complex modulations. And then, there’s Chopin. Some of the most complex and challenging piano music ever written played here with apparent cool aplomb by Mr Owens. As he said in the last of his several amusing short introductions during the concert, playing Chopin is no joke! Two Etudes brimming with fiendish contrasts were followed by the last of the evening’s works, the composer’s Scherzo No. 3 in C sharp minor. Only a true virtuoso can play this music to maximum effect. Rapidly descending octaves, delicate falling arpeggios, cascade after cascade of fountain-like shimmering tumbles. Breathtaking.
STOCKBRIDGE MUSIC ROGER OWENS REVIEW Barely has Mr Owens taken his seat at the piano than the most remarkable keyboard playing you could hear anywhere begins. No flamboyance, no histrionics, no swaying around – deceptively he commands the keyboard from top C to bottom A in effortless flow. Critics have described his virtuoso technique variously as ‘music making of overwhelming intensity’, ‘vivid sensitivity’, and ‘possessing a warm tonal palette’. And so it was here in this early Autumn Stockbridge Music concert. The church was packed, and the audience enjoyed works by Scarlatti, Mozart, Debussy, Liszt, Tchaikovsky and Chopin.
CAROL CONCERT IN AID OF HOSPICE
This year’s carol concert from Andover’s chamber choir, The Harmonium Singers, is in support of the Countess of Brecknock Hospice which still needs funds for its new building extension. Once again St Mary’s Church in Andover is the venue and this year the seasonal readings will be given by former BBC journalist and broadcaster Bruce Parker.
Scarlatti was something of an innovator. Writing in the early 1700s, his sonatas showed the way for composers who’d follow, easy to understand here with Sonata in C, K 132. Remote modulations, agitation, gravitas, tension, urgency, calm – they all ignore conventions of the time. Take two works by Liszt inspired by sonnets by the 14th century poet Petrarch, the first about angels with their contrasting sounds of love and sorrow, the second a musical expression of Petrarch’s confused state of love at the time for a lady called Laura de Noves. He feels imprisoned yet free, burning with love, but like ice. The 19th century Liszt reflects these emotions with death defying chromatic Musical director Bruce Randall explains: “This traditional carol concert is a popular mix of old and new, with arrangements by the likes of John Rutter and David Willcocks, together with some recent additions to the Christmas music repertoire, and of course favourite carols for all to sing. So there’s something for everyone and all designed to take full advantage of the wonderful setting and acoustic of St Mary’s. We’re particularly pleased this year to be raising money for the Hopsice which provides such an indispensible service to the local community, and to have the participation of Bruce Parker who is one of the trustees.” The concert, entitled ‘O Holy Night’, begins at 7.30pm in St Mary’s Church, Andover on Saturday 15 December. Tickets are £8 in advance from Newbury Building Society, The Lights and choir members, or £10 at the door. Under 14s are admitted free. Further information: Veronica Bacon - 01264 771285 www.harmoniumsingers.org.uk
Apart from two charming Tchaikovsky works, mention must be made though of a piece by Debussy played earlier in the concert called simply ‘Pour le Piano’. Three short movements in swift succession, the frenetic first and last with much crossing over of hands. But the gentle second, Sarabande, was played so beautifully as if the composer was in touch with the soloist. The audience demanded encores. The last was by special request from an audience member for Chopin’s most famous piano work, the spectacular Fantasie Impromptu. As with all the evening’s works, note perfect, and incidentally with no music on the piano. The whole concert came from the soul. What repertoire. What a concert. Roger Owens performed in St Peter's Church, Stockbridge on Saturday 15th September 2018 Written by James Montgomery

THE 2019 ALL SAINTS WINTER LECTURES UPPER CLATFORD
ANDOVER CHORAL SOCIETY CHRISTMAS CONCERT 2018 Andover Choral Society presents two contemporary masterpieces by living composers in an evening full of light and celebration. The choir returns to St Mary’s Church on Saturday 1 December at 7.30pm, joined by the Westminster Chamber Orchestra, for a concert including works by Morten Lauridsen and John Rutter. Described by The Times as “a classic of new American choral writing”, Morten Lauridsen’s Lux Aeterna weaves together texts on a theme of light, incorporating elements of chant, polyphony, Romantic harmony, and modern dissonance. Composed in 1997, the year of his mother’s death, the work combines text from the Requiem mass with other sacred texts, taking as its centrepiece the beautiful O Nata Lux (O light born [of light]), which speaks of the arrival of Jesus in the world.
MONDAY 21ST JANUARY 2019 - ENIGMA: THE UNBREAKABLE BUT BROKEN Though the Enigma story is well known this talk will cover the aspects less well known; why the machine was developed, how it works, its genius ALAN WATSON - RETIRED MERCHANT and the sheer enormity NAVY OFFICER of breaking the code. The talk will put the Enigma into perspective with developments at the time with some incredible twists in the story of how and why they were developed. Four different Enigma machines will be on display including an original German machine. Alan Watson is a former Merchant Navy Radio officer. His duties included codes and ciphers led him into the Enigma story long before it became public knowledge. In “retirement”, he divides his time between development and testing of radar, teaching, skippering HMS Medusa (a WW2 warship) and Royal Navy training vessels. MONDAY 4TH FEBRUARY 2019 HOW TO SAVE THE WORLD? We are barely out of the last financial crisis and yet ED CONWAY - JOURNALIST we seem to be lurching AND AUTHOR into another. Why? One possibility is the way we run the global economy. Is there a smart fix? Intriguingly there was one occasion in history (Bretton Woods) where politicians met to try and achieve precisely that. This is their story - and some thoughts on whether there are any lessons we could take from them and the process. Ed Conway, Economics Editor of Sky News and a weekly columnist for The Times, is the longest-serving economics editor of any of the major UK broadcasters. He has interviewed finance ministers, central bank governors, prime ministers and heads of state. His book on the Bretton Woods Conference, The Summit: The Biggest Battle of the Second World War – Fought Behind Closed Doors is a fascinating account of this war time endeavor and impact on world stability.
“It was a natural thing for me to blend poetry and the human voice, which is the most wonderful and personal of all musical instruments. I ended up writing a great deal of choral music, and haven’t stopped.” - Morten Lauridsen John Rutter’s exuberant Magnificat is an extended setting of the words ascribed to the Virgin Mary on hearing she was to give birth to Christ. Rutter recalls being inspired by the sunshine and celebration of Mediterranean feast days in honour of the Virgin, resulting in an energetic and colourful work with driving rhythms. Tickets £12, available from the choir on 01264 396511, or from The Lights on 01264 368368 and at thelights.org.uk

EDUCATION in life. During their time at PSC AHED these students have conquered the many challenges of studying as an adult; juggling caring for young families, managing demanding work commitments and gruelling commutes to achieve the college’s most exceptional results to date. For the first time ever 40% of students received first class honours degrees (compared to a nation-wide figure of 26%) with a further 36% receiving a 2.1. Staff and students work in partnership to ensure each individual fulfils their potential, with excellent results.
ARE YOU LOOKING FOR A NEW DIRECTION? Peter Symonds Adult & Higher Education Division offers a wide range of courses varying from language and leisure classes to industry-recognised professional qualifications and university degrees in a variety of subjects. Approximately 250 students choose to attend higher education courses at PSC AHED every year. They are attracted by our pioneering approach to learning, where students study for a degree one day a week
whilst continuing in employment. With fees rising at mainstream universities, this proves both professionally enriching and cost effective. The high quality of teaching offered at AHED consistently exceeds rigorous national quality requirements, and was recognised in 2018 with a Silver TEF Award from the government’s Office for Students. This year, staff and students of Peter Symonds AHED are celebrating the extraordinary degree results achieved by recent graduates. The majority of these graduates returned to education as mature students, opting to upskill, to retrain or to find a new direction
Equally popular is our Access to Higher Education programme, which provides an alternative route to university for adult learners. This is ideal for those wishing to progress to study at university without traditional entry requirements as well as those who want to make a career change. Learners can study full-time or part-time on diplomas including: Allied Health Professionals, Health & Social Care Professional, Humanities, Nursing & Midwifery, Primary Teaching and Sciences. In the past academic year all Access students who decided to progress were offered university places, four of which were accepted directly onto Masters programmes. Come along to one of our Open Events or visit our website www.psc.ac.uk/ahed to discover the right course for you!

WORLD CINEMA IN WINCHESTER
T
wo of Winchester’s popular arts organisations are coming together raise Winchester’s profile as a recognised centre for Film in Southern England. The new partnership comes into being on 6 November when Winchester Film Society and Winchester Film Festival showcase an evening of mind-boggling short films produced by dynamic young filmmakers from across the globe. The event will be hosted at the Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium. Winchester Film Society has a forty year track record in showcasing the best in World Cinema. In the last couple of years the venue for the Society has been the Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium. As a result of improvements to the quality of projection, sound systems and catering provision audience numbers have rocketed. The Society runs a programme of films between October and May that features films from every continent and covers all genres from horror to animation to leading edge social drama. Winchester Film Festival runs between 3 - 10 November. The event offers the best new film making talent an opportunity to screen their creations. The event not only showcases award-winning short films from over 50 countries but also includes feature films premiering in the UK. Alongside the Science Centre event on 6 November films can be viewed during the rest of the week at venues across the City. This is a unique opportunity to view films made by seasoned film professionals and newly emerging directorial talent alike.
If you are tired of the standard Hollywood fare of chickflicks, Marvel heroes and back slapping Hollywood stars this joint event could rekindle your love of film. What’s on show here is a type of film that takes risks but doesn’t necessarily have happy endings or massive CGI effects. The films won’t originate from major US studios and be backed by multibillion pound budgets. Chances are they will have been produced on a shoestring just about anywhere else in the world. What you will get is radical storytellers taking on major social issues that you don’t see often at Chain Cinemas or on mainstream TV. So World Cinema is beating a path to your doorstep in Winchester. It’s an experience of film that is participative. You will be encouraged to give your opinions, talk to and question filmmakers and chat to other film goers about issues raised in the films. Going out to watch film offers something you can’t get at home watching Netflix or Amazon Prime. Check out the links below to discover an amazing programme of World and British Cinema you might not otherwise get a chance to see. BRITISH TRUST FOR ORNITHOLOGY OWL APPEAL W
e’re in the dark and we need your help. Owls play an important role in our environment. We urgently need your help to understand more about the ecology and population status of owls in the UK. As apex predators they sit at the top of the food chain and are therefore excellent indicators of the health of the countryside. We need a much better understanding of their population trends, how they use different habitats and how they interact with other species. Data collected for Bird Atlas 2007-11 has shown a worrying contraction in geographical range and decline in abundance for Short-eared Owl. Although the distribution of Tawny Owl has changed little over the last 40 years, Breeding Bird Survey data suggest that the population is also declining. We now need specially-designed surveys to find out more about their status and how they use different habitats; the last Tawny Owl survey was carried out more than a decade ago. The urgent work you could help to fund A project that tackles our knowledge gaps for all five UK owl species is a very ambitious undertaking. We have designed a staged approach with three elements of work; Securing better information about the habitat requirements of Tawny Owls and their breeding numbers. We’ll combine this with efforts to unite those individuals and groups studying Tawny Owls through local schemes to provide a strong link-up between regional and national patterns. The next stage of the project will focus on the Shorteared Owl, a nomadic species for which information on movements and habitat use is particularly important in the design of sensitive land management approaches. John Calladine at BTO Scotland has just begun work which
helps us to understand more about the home range, habitat use and year-round movements of Short-eared Owls. The third stage is to extend this knowledge through a wider programme of tracking work, so that we can understand how the habitat requirements of Short-eared Owls change through the year. This autumn and winter we want to learn more about Tawny Owl population change and understand more about their calling behaviour. To do this we need your help. Take part in the Tawny Owl Calling Survey You can help us to increase our understanding of their calling behaviour and distribution, particularly focusing on the impact of urbanisation and artificial lighting. It's easy to take part. All you need to do is listen for Tawny Owls for 20 minutes each week, from 30 September to 31 March, from your garden, local park or woodland. You can even listen whilst lying in bed with the window open. The more weeks that you can listen the better - but you can do as many or as few weeks as you are able. We need your help, whether you usually hear Tawny Owls or not. Knowing where owls can't be heard is just as valuable as knowing where they can be heard. Donate to the owl appeal Our owls may be fading into the dark - we must address the gaps in our knowledge now so that we have the best chance of countering the threats they face. Let’s make sure that those magical encounters with owls don’t become even more rare.
